ooooooooooooh i love romance as storytelling so there’s a LOT bare with me:

irene adler & sherlock holmes - the BLUEPRINT for the criminal/detective dynamic and TBH no one does it like them even now!!! 

the warrens (conjuring franchise) - love that horror king James wan said, “i WILL make the romantic love between these two people the pillar, the foundation, the THREAD of my INCREDIBLE horror franchise, and they will be played by Patrick Wilson and vera famiga to PERFECTION” love them.

the doctor and river song - the horror, the tragedy, the INTIMACY, the grOwing INtO lOvE knowing it will kill you, but unable to do anything else. the time travel??? look, I know there’s a lot wrong with the way moffat writes romance but this concept was so magnificent Christopher Nolan appropriated it for two straight dudes in tenet so

jane and rafael (jtv) - I deeply love these two, and OOFT the JOURNEY, but what I love about jane/raf (other than how wholesome and sweet they are) is the way the series really showed you that they loved each other in every way (as friends, lovers, family, etc) so that when they finally got together there was no “but what if?” u know? ahh!

sook-hee/hideko (the handmaiden) + lila/diego (tua) + the ladies in poalof + prince char and ella (ella enchanted) - grouping these together because I essentially love them for the same reasons which is we love a love story as emancipation!!! we also romances that begin in deception, but wind up being the most truthful the lovers have ever been fuckin yes!!

nicholas/mia (princess diaries 2) -  come to think of it this is also the truth in deception concept again, but I also love romances with men who clearly guzzle respect women juice. also love me a “oh, THIS person is actually who i am in love with” sorta plot. i also love knightly/emma for this too!!

dany/lexi (blood and treasure)- i know for facts there are better examples of this romance plot that i love, BUT I LOVE “exes who didn’t work out so they grew apart, but what they actually did was grow to be right for one another later in life” fuckin SUPERB SHIT

crowley/aziraphale (good omens) - i absolutely don't need to explain this because i can’t it makes me WEEP. 

i really dig the funky vibes between anna and that fuckboi she share her feelings with in anna and the apocalypse (2017). 

la la land - listen the reason i fkn love lala land is cos its two straights experiencing a gay romance in the sense that ryan and emma have an intense passionate love affair that defines who they are that is doomed to fail but they still acknowledge each other in the club and have vivid “what if” fantasies about eachother

harlivy (harley quinn series) - similar to jane/raf, we love a journey of two people realising they’re EVERYTHING to each other + we got some love as emancipation vibes!!

leap year (2010) - best from com ever made and no i am not joking.

riki and zane (h20 just add water) - have not watched h20 for a long time but i literally think about the banter between these guys every time i go write a couple. they were so formative for me kasdn

richonne (the walking dead) - yeah same as crowley and aziraphale i cant really talk about these two without weeping...they!

finally, i recently watched little women (2019) and fell in love with that romantic version of laurie/amy. my heart was literally SWELLING at how sweet they were, and how unlike other versions of lw it didn’t feel like they were settling, but CHOOSING each other. loved that.

idk maybe other bisexuals can relate but i find figuring out whether I'm actually enjoying a romance between two characters OR just projecting because i am attracted to them both REALLYYYY HARD. 

idk i also used to hate romance growing up, mostly because of the way that when ur a “woman” ur expected to love it and i hated that because tbh most romances in media are SHIT. but i love romance now mostly because i realised how amazing it is in the right handsas a narrative that transcends genre, how it can grow/destroy characters, open them up etc. 

i think romance is really powerful but its also really hard to write well and obviously soooo subjective, but i love watching characters grow into and out of romantic love. love it. it fascinates me a lot maybe cos i don't think i’ve ever really experienced it?? not saying that as self-depreciative or anything, but its definitely something that impacts how i see it. anyways, i’m sleepy, thanks for letting me ramble. x

Do you think there’s a fine line between writers having a plan for their show (ex I think stelena was the plan at least for Kevin) and writers giving into fan service when a ship becomes popular (ex jj and kiera possibly becoming a thing even tho the plan was pope/kiera). Like giving into fan service can ruin a show (bughead) but the latter can also ruin it by avoiding what fans want (bellarke/how I met your mother ending). What should writers do?

Well, at least by the looks of my dashboard, people still seem to be watching The 100 anyway it seems and The 100 is notorious for going against what the fandom wants is it not, didn’t a good chunk of the fandom freak out when Lexa died and when that guy ... the one who is on American Gods now, left the show and so the writers killed him off? Wasn’t there like a petition to boycott the show?

And I mean with Bughead, Riverdale was ruined from the moment it started, it’s a horrible show with horrible plot lines and horrible acting and just overall horrible writing.

At least for me, I think it doesn’t hurt to know what the viewers want but that doesn’t mean that viewers have a say. Fan service used to mean something very different, fan service when done properly is giving your fans a little treat usually with a callback, not letting them dictate who gets to be with who and what storyline you do. For instance, if I were in charge of TVD and I had to give a fan service moment it would be 3x07 because it’s an episode where past characters come back from the dead

so you get to see Vicki and Anna and Grams and Mason and Lexi

but that’s the only time you’d see them, with the exception of Lexi ---- I’d keep 2x15 --- but that’s it. Because that’s a treat, that’s a OMG YESSSS THEY’RE BACK, that’s servicing your fans who have been with you for three seasons.

OTH had a lot of problems but a good fan service moment they did is they got viewers involved by having them vote on the song that would play during Nathan and Haley’s dance at their vow renewal.

In The O.C. when Marissa dies, it’s weird to call it a fan service moment but the show does a montage of all the times Ryan has carried her

and it’s a fan service moment because the fans remember those moments and it makes the death all the more painful for fans

That’s the kind of fan service I like. I think the bigger question is the fine line between writers sticking to a plan and allowing for new developments that’s where I think a show like JTV failed.

When I started shipping them: I started watching JTV because someone I followed reblogged Jetra gifs (around s2), so I went in expecting to ship it. If I hadn’t had that expectation I probably wouldn’t have shipped them in s1 but I did, right from the scene where Petra shows Jane the nursery and later when Jane comforts Petra in the stairwell. They didn’t have the friendliest relationship during s1, but they did have a lot of chemistry and sexual tension! 

My thoughts: Jetra has so, so much potential. The way their relationship has grown from unfriendly enemies to unexpected friends to this has been an amazing journey, and it would be even more amazing to see it developed further into a romance. They’re very different in a lot of ways - Jane’s idealism vs Petra’s more cynical nature, how they tend to trust/mistrust people - and that’s why they conflict so often. But that means they also complement each other well (like Petra calling Jane her moral compass). And in general, they have such a good dynamic!

What makes me happy about them: They both care about each other so, so much. Like, I’m thinking of the episode where Petra goes into labor and Jane is there, or Jane trying to save her from Milos, or Petra secretly helping with Jane and Michael’s house, and … it’s just so wonderful.

What makes me sad about them: That they’ll never be canon!

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Bad characterization or oversimplifying their relationship. 

Things I look for in fanfic: I’ll try anything that doesn’t have the above flaws and is well-written. 

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Petra with JR, Jane with Michael. 

My happily ever after for them: Learning to be honest with each other and be in a committed relationship together. Eventually, getting married on a beach. Jane as a famous author and Petra running the Marbella, or even her own new hotel chain. Raising Ellie and Anna and Mateo (along with Rafael) and taking them to Disneyland (because how cute is that idea?). Just being happy together.

Random thought but I really wanna see Anna/Elsa/Mateo interacting and being cute siblings and actually being allowed to play like children and see how they interact with all the family members. Jtv is so bad at including them (although I did miss the first few eps this season and haven't found them yet to watch so I could be wrong) but I feel like all they do is sit quietly at a table and eat lol. I wanna see how the fam interacts, there's so much cute comedy potential!

So do I! There’s so little of it. I’ve been trying to list them down because I intend to make a gifset but I can’t even complete one because there isn’t enough lmfao. Or I could be forgetting some, but the point is they’re scarce and I agree, it would be nice to see them interact. #JaneTheVirgin Chapter 55: Life Goes On

Chapter 55

 Inhala. Exhala. First episode since…Gaaaaaaaaah! I can’t do this, I thought I could, but I…I need a sexy but stern Rafael with a beard to tell me to get over myself and write this dang recap.

The intro starts in darkness. Alba’s voice gently reminds us it will always feel different. It's two weeks after Michael's death and Jane is in bed crying about to spiral into a dark depression. Jane and Alba now have something awful in common; they’re both widows.  Jane asks Alba how she survived losing the love of her life and Alba tells Jane that she had no choice, she had to be strong.  Alba and Jane look at Mateo and Jane realizes she has to be strong for Mateo. Little by little jane moves forward.

Three years later, Jane gets ready for the wedding.  She’s nervous, but MICHAEL’S PICTURE TELLS HER SHE’S GOT THIS.  Gah. Gaaah!

The wedding turns out to be…no one’s really. Ugh, the writers psyched us into thinking someone on this show other than Jane was mature enough to enter into holy matrimony and it's a dang reality-TV wedding.  Rogelio and Darci are happily-ever-aftering on their hit show, The De La Factor Factor. Rogelio tells Darci her love is like winning the lottery and he got “the lump sum of her love.” Ha!  But it’s all fake, because DARCI AND ROGELIO HATE EACH OTHER WITH THE WHITE HOT INTENSITY OF A THOUSAND SUNS. This is a gyp! Justina and Jaime have mad chemistry and the JTV writers are really cheating themselves by keeping these two apart just because Rogelio loves Xiomara. Yeah. Ro is still in love with Xo.

Random people on the street have been throwing Big Gulps on Xo for trying to break up Dargelio (me: #Team Dargelio). Xo has actually been quite happy with Bruce in their snazzy love nest, but the producers of De La Factor Factor have edited the reality show to make it look like Xo is the problem.  Darci and Ro are also childless because of fertility problems. But didn’t Darci freeze her young, ready-to-be fertilized eggs?

Jane is late for the tv wedding because MATEO IS A DEMON!  Jane is lovely in a peach evening dress, but

Mateo is running around in nothing but his drawers like 21 Pilots at the Grammys.  Jane has a weather-based “system” to get Mateo to behave. She claps thunder and if Mateo fails to obey, it’s a rainy day. Girl, I guess. Mateo has gone from the terrible twos to the freakin’ awful fours.  There is lots of thunder and rainy days. His teachers want to get him a shadow to help him get his act together. New Mateo is cute; when he said “I’m sorry I’m a bad boy,” I was like, okay, he can stay. But Jane should consider a hand to the bottom.

Or some advice from Petra. Because PETRA IS THE WORLD’S SECOND BEST MOTHER OF TWINS. (The first is Beyoncé. C’mon, you knew that.) Ellie and Anna are angels and like Blue Ivy, they have a successful mom to look up to.  In addition to being the head of the PTA, Petra has rebranded the Marbella as the second happiest place on earth, a kind of kid-friendly luxury hotel with pirates and parrots and adventures. Petra can’t be too perfect, so she hate-bangs the skeevy guy who owns the adult-themed hotel (the All the Way Inn?) next door.

Rafael is fine. He has a beard. Rafael is fine with or without facial hair, but I do like the beard.  Raf was released from prison totally zen-ed out (must have been federal prison).  Nothing upsets him. He lets Petra handle the Marbella and he tries to find solutions for Mateo’s problems rather than worrying. Oh, and he’s got a girlfriend, Abbey, WHO OWNS A GREETING CARD COMPANY.  Hahahahaha!  That’s funny to me for reasons only I get. But it’s funny. I don’t like Abbey. She seems to be the buffer that keeps Jane in the friend-zone.  Just a couple episodes ago, Rafael was shirtless on top of Catalina and now he’s watching Lifetime TV with Helen of Hallmark.

Jane still has Faith M. Whiskers III! And she still has her dream job, only it’s a nightmare.  Jane’s boss is demanding, but when there’s an opening in an author reading series, Jane screws her courage to the sticking post and submits her novel for consideration. Rafael convinces Jane to enroll Mateo in martial arts (Ellie and Anna take classes) and the discipline seems to help.

Ro turns down another season of DLVFF and a guaranteed chance to star in The Passions of Steve (instead of Rob Lowe) because he doesn’t want Xo vilified. And it turns out Dargelio didn’t have fertility problems; Ro wasn’t sure he wanted to be permanently connected to Darci through a child. Because he loves Xo. That’s where this is going. Snoooze.  Let Xo be happy with Boring Bruce and give us Dargelio!

Mateo is so bad, he doesn’t get an invite to his classmate’s birthday party. Raf talks Petra into convincing the boys mom to invite Mateo to the party.  MATEO KARATE CHOPS THE BIRTHDAY CAKE.  Mateo would’ve got snatched had he been my son. This is annoying. Mothers who can’t see their bad-ass kids are bad are annoying.

Jane thinks Mateo acts out because she was too distracted by her grief to properly care for him. Petra assures her that’s not true. It turns out the day Rafael went to jail, Jane and Petra promised each other an our-baby-daddy-is-in-jail mutual support brunch every week. They helped each other get through Rafael’s incarceration. Awww.

Jane gets a chance to read from her novel!  The night before, Abuela tucks her in. And when she’s alone JANE LISTENS TO A MESSAGE FROM MICHAEL. About oranges. Gah! Gaaaaah! I ugly cried.  I couldn’t breathe.  I was worried the show was getting silly with Mateo and the cake, the Marbella and the pirates, but these moments of genuine grief and sadness and the very real feeling of missing Michael are a perfect  counterpoint to the light and fluffy stuff. Gah.

Turns out Jane’s novel isn’t the story of the Villanueva women; it’s the story of Jane and Michael, Snow Falling. And it’s a romance novel. Everybody shows up, even professor Donaldson who loves the novel. The reading goes well—Jane gets a deal! (Wait, does this make JANE the narrator?)

Petra, who had been trying to get the skeevy guy next door to sign an easement or emolument or something, realizes something and everything works out. I’m horrible with plot. But Yael Grobglas is a frickin’ amazing actress. Know this. When she fought for the easement telling Skeevy Guy that the New Marbella was the first thing that was all hers and she did it for her daughters, that was a great actress making a weak plot point work.

The Marbella Pirate leads the hotel’s children on a fun treasure hunt (in verse, too!) that leads them to the beach where they dig up SCOTT’S CORPSE!!!  Petra said earlier that Scott and Anezka broke up and Scott disappeared. I thought he went off with Michael’s brother and Lina, you know, to that big abandoned story-line in the sky, but SCOTT IS DEAD and since he was blackmailing Petra, she’s probably the main suspect…dun-Dun-DUNNN!

I give this eppy, on a scale of 1-10, a 7.  Last week’s episode was a 10.  This episode felt like we were back to setting up the story pins and, this far into the season, I’m ready to bowl! But the Michael moments were such nice touches and Petra’s story-line earned this eppy a 7.    I could have used more Rogelio and more info about this Abbey woman. But I guess that’s next week.
