He brought bands from L.A. to the Gonzo

With his income as a professional pilot, the man from Zurich [Switzerland] finances the melodious retro rock of his record label Taxi Gauche - and he bakes cakes.

When the writer was asked if he would like to do a portrait of the owner of the music label Taxi Gauche, who is a full-time pilot, he didn't just say: "Sure! In fact, there is a man in front of the bar Si o No, who would pass for a basketball player by the size of his body, wearing an idiosyncratic sixties look with adequate eyeglasses, but who is above all exceptionally polite and reserved. So that one thinks, irritated, "The heroes of the air are apparently not what they used to be."

Beatles and Cypress Hill

Of course it's nonsense. And for this story it's not relevant at all, because the talk is about music, bands and the label Taxi Gauche. The reason why we'll talk about flying later on is that everything is somehow connected to everything else in Zurich (this even applies to baking cakes!). But let's take it one step at a time. So for now we quickly hop to the Appenzell village of Hundwil.

There Alder grows up with seven siblings - as "Son of a Preacher Man", to put it musically. That means: Calvinism and hymns à discrétion. Until the teacher takes the class through a Beatles song. "That was my awakening," says the 35-year-old. "I began to question, to discover the world beyond conservative conventions." He dives more and more often into the St. Gallen subculture, where he sees himself for the first time as "part of a group". Since his parents' house denied him long hair, he shaves his bald head in protest and thus goes to the first concert of his life - it is the hilariously crazy show of the hip hop formation Cypress Hill.

"What about drugs?" the journalist wants to know, "Soft, hard, now and then or pathological?" Alder takes a sip of gazosa and says, "I never cared for that. I never rebelled against rebelling, by the way. That liberation was an existential necessity for me."

All the stronger is the sheer curiosity about life, especially culture. Like a dried out sponge under the tap, he soaks himself full of impressions and knowledge, the musical socialization now leads him towards Indie, New Wave and hypnotic Rock. Which in turn arouses his interest in Manchester, where he is getting his English in shape for the planned teacher training.

Los Angeles becomes a Mecca

One day, during a flight, a buddy tells him, "Pilot, that's a cool job too." Alder thinks about it, abandons his training at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Lucerne, where he spends his early twentysomething years, and applies to train as an airline pilot. He takes hurdle after hurdle with flying colours, at the age of 24 he is co-pilot for short distances, four flights a day. Because he learned on Airbus, he later flies this type of aircraft on long-haul missions, which eventually take him to Los Angeles. "This city, I can't say otherwise, then became my musical Mecca," says Alder.

On long-haul flights, pilots have two days "layover", as such a stay is called in jargon. The music freak doesn't spend this time in a hotel or shopping, but at concerts in the Echo Park and Silver Lake districts. There he meets soulmates: introverted Shoegazers, nostalgic surf guitars, bands that raise and lower the captivating psychedelic Wall of Sounds. It's a rebirth of the sensual sixties, look and style included: star designer and rock fan Hedi Slimane, made popular by his work for the house of Yves Saint Laurent, becomes a kind of curator of the L.A. music scene - and of Alder's fashionable inspiration ("Which sometimes gets pretty expensive," he laughs).

The dream of his own label

But it's especially the attitude of these people and their "Do it yourself" credo, as it used to be in punk, that enthuses him: Whoever is up for it, starts a band, founds a label, puts a festival on its feet. Positive energy, joy in life, a cooperation instead of a competition.

Over the years, Piet Alder has become part of this scene himself, but has also established excellent contacts with local promoters; with Froth and Corners he even brings the first L.A. bands to the Gonzo in Zurich. And so, in July 2018, he dares the dream of his own label. He calls it Taxi Gauche ("has to do with a past love") and releases one LP and one single each by the end of the year. Today, 22 months later, he has already signed twelve acts from Switzerland and the USA and released nine albums, three singles and an EP - all "strictly vinyl", in editions of 200 to 600 copies. And he wants to grow further, with Harvey Rushmore & the Octopus from Basel already the next formation on Alders radar, "it would be great if they would do the new record on Taxi Gauche", says the label boss.

Prix Photoforum 2018 – Part 2

L’année 2018 s’est achevée au Photoforum avec la 26e édition du Prix Photoforum, qui a sélectionné 14 photographes de tous âges et horizons professionnels. Die Werke aus diesem Jahr widerspiegeln die Auseinandersetzungen der Kunstschaffenden mit wichtigen gesellschaftlichen Themen wie Migration und Klimawandel.

Raphaël Lods a présenté POG9317, un projet pour lequel le photographe s’est s’appuyé sur son propre vécu. Ayant souffert d’un lymphome étant enfant, Raphaël Lods est retourné dans l’unité d’oncologie pédiatrique où il avait été soigné, sillonnant les lieux en quête de ces détails et scènes intimistes ou abstraites. Le projet était formé de clichés pris dans l’hôpital, et d’archives personnelles de son séjour en tant qu’enfant (radiographies, dossiers médicaux,  photographies). Ce projet a mis en lumière le paradoxe d’être enfant, innocent, et pourtant marqué par le cancer et la mort.

Raphaël Lods (*1997) a obtenu en 2017 un BTEC High National Diploma en photographie à IPAC Design Genève. Il poursuit actuellement sa formation au CEPV/Centre d’Enseignement Professionnel de Vevey.

Die Arbeit POG9317 basiert auf der persönlichen Lebenserfahrung des Künstlers. Als Raphaël Lods vor 18 Jahren wegen eines Lymphoms hospitalisiert wurde, entstanden die ersten Bilder dieser Arbeit. Mit dem Wunsch, die Vergangenheit aufzuarbeiten, bevor die Erinnerungen ganz verschwinden, geht Raphaël Lods zurück in die Abteilung für pädiatrische Onkologie. Zurück an den Ort, wo er als Kind behandelt wurde. Er streift durch diese Räume, auf der Suche nach intimen und absurden Details und Szenen. Seine Bilder konfrontieren uns mit einer widersprüchlichen Realität, in der Spielzeuge auf medizinische Instrumente treffen. Wir folgen seinen Erinnerungen und lassen uns durch seine Bilder führen, die vor Kurzem in der Onkologie entstanden sind oder aus seinem persönlichen Archiv stammen. Raphaël Lods beleuchtet das Paradox der Situation: Gleichzeitig Kind sein, unschuldig und dennoch vom Krebs gezeichnet dem Tod ins Auge schauen.

Raphaël Lods (*1997) hat 2017 ein BTEC High National Diploma in Fotografie an der IPAC Design in Genf erlangt. Zu Zeit studiert er am CEPV in Vevey.

Anna-Tia Buss a présenté I Never Realized, un projet toujours en cours, qui met en lumière la relation de la femme à son corps, dans une société grandement marquée par les critères esthétiques. Le travail comportait des interviews de femmes, des portraits, ainsi que des polaroids sur lesquelles les intervenantes avaient tracé quelques anecdotes faisant références à ce qui avait marqué leur relation à leur corps.

Anna-Tia Buss (*1993) a obtenu un CFC en photographie au CEVP/Centre d’Enseignement Professionnel de Vevey en 2015 et étudie actuellement au HSLU Design & Kunst de Lucerne. Elle travaille en tant que photographe indépendante depuis 2013.

Das Projekt I Never Realized vereint die Geschichten verschiedener Frauen und deren Kämpfe um Anerkennung und Selbstbewusstsein, die Anna-Tia Buss in Treffen mit diesen sammelte. Die an diesem Projekt beteiligten Frauen verbindet, dass sie zu einem bestimmten Zeitpunkt durch Bemerkungen einer Grossmutter, Schwester, Freundin oder anderen Person ein anderes Körperbewusstsein entwickelten. Diese Personen wiesen sie auf einen Makel hin, den sie selbst gar nie an sich selbst festgestellt haben und lösten eine veränderte Körperwahrnehmung aus. Das Projekt reflektiert den Einfluss des Blicks von aussen –  in einer Gesellschaft, in der Schönheitsideale stark verankert sind.

Anna-Tia Buss (*1993) hat 2015 eine Ausbildung in Fotografie am CEPV in Vevey abgeschlossen und studiert aktuell an der Hochschule für Design & Kunst in Luzern. Sie arbeitet seit 2013 als selbstständige Fotografin.

Daniel Rihs a présenté un documentaire intitulé Zurück Gelassen und Vergessen, sur deux villages kosovars, Krushe e Madhe et Krushe e Vogel. Vingt ans après la guerre du Kosovo, le photographe a sillonné ces villages et interviewé ses habitants. Sous forme de vidéo, ce projet présentait des clichés du quotidien des habitants, ainsi que le récit de leur vie après la guerre.

Daniel Rihs (*1966) a commencé la photographie en tant qu’autodidacte dans les années 90. Depuis, il a suivi de nombreux masterclasses et stages photographiques. En 2016, il est lauréat du Swiss Press Photo Award dans la catégorie Histoires Suisses.

Am 24. März 1999 intervenierte die NATO im Kosovokrieg und bombardierte das damalige Jugoslawien. Am gleichen Tag griffen serbische Soldaten und Milizen mit Panzern und schwerer Artillerie mehrere Dörfer im Süden des heutigen Kosovo an. Rund 20 Jahre später besucht und dokumentiert Daniel Rihs die beiden stark betroffenen Ortschaften Krushë e Madhe – mit rund 7'000 Einwohner_innen – und das deutlich kleinere Krushë e Vogël. Geblieben sind nur die Ruinen ihrer Häuser, die durch Kosovo-Albaner in einem Rachefeldzug niedergebrannt wurden. Bis heute sind keine Serben zurückgekehrt. Für die Aufarbeitung der traumatischen Verbrechen auf dem Weg zu einer Versöhnung scheint nicht nur das Geld, sondern auch der Wille beider Seiten zu fehlen.

Daniel Rihs (*1966) hat in den 90er Jahren als Autodidakt zur Fotografie gefunden. Seither hat er verschiedene Masterclasses und Praktika absolviert. 2016 wurde er mit dem Swiss Press Photo Award in der Kategorie Schweizer Reportagen ausgezeichnet.

Vincent Levrat a présenté Outburst, un projet résultant d’un séjour passé sur un terrain vague. Le photographe a documenté le temps passé sur ce terrain de jeux, où il s’est construit un univers formé du matériel trouvé sur place. Le projet était constitué de photographies de sculptures créées sur le terrain vague, d’une édition regroupant le corpus d’images produites, ainsi que d’une installation.

Après un CFC en photographie obtenu au CEPV/Centre d’enseignement professionnel de Vevey en 2015, Vincent Levrat (*1992) achevé un bachelor en photographie à l’ECAL/École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne.

Brachen, leere und funktionslose Flächen, sind nicht sozialen Normen unterworfen. Sie können folglich als Freiräume wahrgenommen werden, in denen die Vorstellungskraft grenzenlos zum Ausdruck kommen kann. Vincent Levrat machte diesen Ort zu seinem Atelier unter freiem Himmel. Die Brache wird zum Spielplatz, in welchem er mit verschiedenen vorgefundenen Materialien experimentiert, mit den physikalischen Gesetzen spielt und sich in dieser eigenen Welt verliert. Vincent Levrat stellt eine Installation und eine Publikation vor, in der er sein Erlebnis auf der Brache festhält.

Nach dem Abschluss in Fotografie 2015 am CEPV in Vevey, hat Vincent Levrat (*1992) einen Bachelor in Fotografie an der ECAL in Lausanne erlangt.

Avec Ferox, The Forgotten Archives, Nicolas Polli a exploré les frontières entre réalité et fiction et posé la question de l’évaluation de la réalité des images. Le photographe a créé de toute pièce une archive visuelle de la planète fictive Ferox, au travers de photographies, de diagrammes, d’un site web et d’un livre. Le photographe a ouvert un questionnement sur la confiance que nous accordons aux images produites par de grandes agences telles que la NASA, ainsi que sur la véracité des images auxquelles nous sommes quotidiennement confrontés.

Nicolas Polli (*1989) a obtenu un bachelor en communication visuelle à Lugano (2010-2013), suivi en 2016 d’un master en direction artistique à l’ECAL/École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne. Il est actif en tant qu’artiste, designer graphique et éditeur.

Ferox, The Forgotten Archives erschafft ein Archiv, welches der fiktiven Weltraumagentur IEMS gehört. Der Fotograf will wissen, wie wichtig die «Echtheit » des Materials ist. Ist es einfach, «Wirklichkeit» zu fälschen? Welche Art von Information braucht es, damit wir einem Bild trauen? Um diesem Archiv mehr Kraft zu verleihen, erstellte der Künstler eine Webseite und ein Buch. Auf der Open-Source-Webseite können die Benutzer_innen das Bildmaterial anschauen und wiederverwenden. Das Ziel des Künstlers ist es, zu beobachten, wie dieses Archiv genutzt wird. Das Buch enthält eine Auswahl des Bildmaterials und wird von gleichermassen erfundenen Essays, Daten und Diagrammen begleitet.

Nicolas Polli (*1989) hat von 2010–2013 in Lugano Visuelle Kommunikation studiert und im Anschluss einen Master in Direction Artistique an der ECAL in Lausanne erworben. Er arbeitet als Künstler, Grafikdesigner und Verleger.

Anastasia Mityukova a présenté Projet Iceworm, un projet revenant sur le drame écologique qui menace la région de Thulé au Groenland. La région servait de base militaire américaine dans les années 60, avant d’être abandonnée, et ses déchets nucléaires enfouis sous la glace. La photographe a exposé à l’aide différents médiums la destruction du paysage et de la population locale. Une cyanotype, un vidéo, un livre, des images actuelles prise par des Inuits, ainsi que des archives de l’armée américaine ont mis en lumière la latence la latence et la dangerosité de ces déchets nucléaires qui peuvent surgir à tout moment.

Après des études en architecture à l’EPFL/École Polytechnique de Lausanne achevées en 2014, Anastasia Mityukova (*1992) se forme à l’ECAL/École Cantonale d’Art de Lausanne. Elle y obtient un bachelor en photographie en 2018.

Im Dorf Thulé, im Norden Grönlands, wurde 1957 unter dem Eis die amerikanische experimentelle Militärbasis Camp Century erbaut. In dieser sollten Nuklearraketen für einen Angriff auf die Sowjetunion aufbewahrt werden. Als die Eisschicht nach sechs Jahren unaufhörlichen Bauens brüchig wurde, gab man das Projekt auf. Der ganze Abfall, darunter auch Nuklearreaktoren, liegen dort begraben. Heute, da wir mit dem Klimawandel kämpfen, drohen diese Überreste das lokale Ökosystem zu verschmutzen. Eine Tragödie für die Inuit Bevölkerung, die von der Jagd und Fischerei lebt. Bis zum heutigen Tag übernimmt weder die dänische noch die amerikanische Regierung Verantwortung für dieses Desaster. Die Arbeit Project Iceworm von Anastasia Mityukova widmet sich diesem ökologischen Drama. 

Nach einem Architekturstudium an der EPFL in Lausanne studierte Anastasia Mityukova (*1992) an der ECAL in Lausanne, wo sie 2018 mit einem Bachelor in Fotografie abschloss.

Marcel Rickli a présenté Ambivalent, un documentaire sur le problème de la pollution en Chine. Le pays, bien que confronté à de majeurs problèmes liés aux combustibles fossiles, investit massivement dans la production d’électricité renouvelable. Ce sont à la fois les sources du problème et les solutions qui y sont apportées que Marcel Rickli a présenté au travers de ses photographies.

Formé comme photodesigner, Marcel Rickli (*1986) après divers stages photographiques en Suisse et aux États-Unis, a lancé son entreprise Marcel Rickli Fotografie.

China ist weltweit die Nummer Eins, wenn es um Investitionen im Bereich der erneuerbaren Energien geht. Viele Megaprojekte werden aktuell durchgeführt, um dem grössten Umweltproblem des Landes entgegen zu wirken – dem Smog. Es ist eine zweischneidige Problematik, die Marcel Rickli in seiner Serie Ambivalent dokumentiert. Die hohe Luftverschmutzung in China hat jährlich hunderttausende von Opfer zur Folge und führt nun zu neuen wirtschaftlichen Investitionen. Und dennoch, fossile Brennstoffe decken nach wie vor den Grossteil der Energieerzeugung ab. Gleichzeitig werden bisher unerreichte Mengen an Installationen zur Erzeugung von erneuerbaren Energien erbaut.
