Errors, "Errors," and Sci Fi: The Nail Gun Gray Zone
I have more thoughts on errors in sci fi, specifically what does and does not count as an error. So I made a graph.
I'm a firm believer that at some point, your story will just be better if you bend certain rules of reality. A story with 100% realistic gun battles will be impossible for audiences to follow. One with ultra-realistic dialog will be boring and impossible to follow.
HOWEVER. Ice floats in water. Residents of now-Phoenix in the 1700s might've not known that, but it's hard to imagine anyone alive today who hasn't at minimum seen an image of a drink with ice in it. So GI Joe (2009) hinging a major plot point on a block of ice sinking in liquid water is widely regarded as silly and world-breaking. Same goes for The Strangers (2008) making a character unable to use her phone while it's plugged in and charging. Even in 2008, a solid majority of U.S. moviegoers owned cell phones and regularly used them as they were plugged in. Errors. Firmly.
But on the opposite end of the spectrum, you have "errors" that only bug a small subset of your audience with relevant expertise. You can always count on some of that subset to take to Reddit and whine pedantically about a 10-round gun firing 11 rounds, but I doubt those count as errors. My personal example is the lack of a character named Surprise in Inside Out — I've studied and taught Paul Ekman's theories, so to me the fact that they included only 5 of his 6 "universal" affects is always going to look weird. But I know that's less an error than a pet peeve, because there wouldn't be much for the character Surprise to do that isn't taken up by Fear or Joy. (The sequel also has a Surprise-ish and a Contempt-ish character, so there's that.) Same goes for the water main not being pressurized correctly in Batman Begins — I'll take city planners' word for it that Scarecrow's plan wouldn't work, but COME ON. It's a sci fi movie about a furry who makes a living punching aliens. If you want realism, watch a documentary.
That said. There's also that middle zone. What I call the Nail Gun Gray Zone, because it really is hard to tell how much some errors are obscure and piddly, how much they're mainstream and obvious. Because. Nail guns can't shoot nails. They're not projectile weapons. Not unless the story takes the time to show a character modifying the tool to override the fact that it has to be pressed flush against a board before it will fire. BUT. If you told me "99% of modern Americans know that!" I'd believe you. If you told me "only professional contractors know that!" I'd believe you. That poll clarified basically nothing — roughly 25% of respondents had used a nail gun, ~25% didn't know much about them, and ~50% had only seen one used. (I didn't ask "do you know that a nail gun can't be used as a projectile weapon" because then anyone who read the question should by definition answer "yes.")
Anyway, I think that a lot of online arguments about errors/"errors" in sci fi can be captured by the Nail Gun Gray Zone. Most of us can agree that only pedantic blowhards would say that the lack of Surprise ruins Inside Out, and most of us can agree that it'd be nice if The Strangers had simply broken Kristen's phone. Nail guns? One person's "oh come on, that looks ridiculous!" is another person's "it's called a nail gun, right? so why not use it like a gun?" and I don't think doing more polls will resolve it one way or another.
#errors#movie mistakes#science fiction#sci fi#movie errors#nail gun gray zone#sci fi errors#inside out#batman begins#final destination 3#gi joe#the strangers#my heart is a chainsaw#don't get me wrong - i mostly enjoyed my heart is a chainsaw#but the hard left turn into BOTH silly camp and horrific realism AT ONCE near the end was a big turn-off for me#the nail gun was just an obvious example of that tonal issue#nothing to do with animorphs#yet#i'm bringing it back around soon i promise

Summary: Kevin knows something's not right with the Sharing. He's got to be clever and he's got to be subtle- luckily for him, he's good at both. It might just be lucky for other people too.

one of the things that will always destroy me is people believing that good story = darker/more mature/more sexual. this belief has ruined so many stories that could have been amazing & has prevented almost everyone from enjoying other really good stories simply because the age range it's aimed at is one they believe can't have complex themes, characters, plot, etc etc. they don't believe they can be moved by something a publisher or studio decided is for kids & so write it off without even thinking about it. biggest curse of being a writer who actually loves stories & telling them is that literally no one else cares in the most pessimistic, higher-than-thou, capitalism brainrot way you can imagine. & it's all automatic. because that's just what you're taught.
#like people who love all kids media uncritically is another problem#but i find an even bigger one is people not believing animated stuff & younger age range stuff can impact you#like imagine trying to explain something you love so much it makes you cry#& every single time people react as if you told them something batshit off the walls insane like you only eat dirt or something#& they need to help you because there is clearly something wrong with you#& no matter how you explain it they always look at you like a crazy person#i feel like no matter what the kinds of art i love will always get shoved to the back of the closet#how i explain the hopelessness of trying to convince someone they're allowed to watch cartoons#but they're adamant they aren't because they're ''too old for that kind of thing''#it really makes me want to cry. & it makes me angry#anyways this is all to say that the minecraft movie is bad because people are afraid to interact with silly things in good faith#& complete 100% seriousness. they cannot take a concept like minecraft seriously#& so they can't see what it's REALLY about#it's not just haha silly block animal & because they can't see it as it is without the filter of ''for kids''#it will be a bad movie. & it won't represent everything everyone who grew up with that game sees in it#i hate seeing a huge problem & either no one else sees it or they do but just don't care because they don't think it's a problem#it IS a problem. it's a HUGE problem that people think they're not allowed to play or have fun or interact with silly concepts seriously#please take shit seriously i'm crying & i'm begging. we could have had something beautiful#people's inability to acknowledge beauty just because the setting is. in their eyes. for kids. is literally ruining art#& i'm gonna start killing about it#Animorphs save me............................................

Hey! Sorry you don't get many questions.
Is there anything you'd like to see adapted into a TV series that hasn't been already? Anything at all.
“Good question. So, I was gonna say Animorphs, but then I remember they did a low budget Nickelodeon show in the 90s. I would love to see that remade though.”
“Aside from that, the book Restart by Gordon Korman would make a super awesome movie.”
“Then there’s the entire My Teacher Is An Alien series by the legendary Bruce Coville that totally deserves its own TV show or Movie Quadrilogy. I would prefer it to be a TV show though. That way important character arcs wouldn’t have to be cut for time.”

Terrible Animorphs Movie Ideas
The Animorphs 'fight' Hork-Bajir by just knocking them over and then the blades on the Hork-Bajir mean they get stuck to the floor.
Almost nobody dies in the movie. The only blood is from mostly from dramatic superficial cuts, and no gore. Tobias doesn't go for the eyes, he just drops bricks on people's heads.
Morphing is super duper quick and barely follows any of its own rules from the books. Everybody just wears their normal street clothes.
The Taxxons are funny, round, yellow, and we only see them a few times. They always run away when there's a fight.
Visser Three is the obligatory twist villain, which is weird because you'd think he was the villain anyways, but no it turns out Alloran was never a Controller, Esplin is just his Yeerk Empire codename, but even that's not the twist because the real twist is he's about to attempt another genocide as soon as he finds the Time Matrix and can erase the Yeerk homeworld from ever existing. He has been chasing the stupid white ball of destiny like Ahab with a whale and using the Yeerks to row his boat. He is insane. Unhinged. He has a scar over one eye and a beard. Later he dies by falling off a ledge, but we never actually see him hit the ground.
Tom actually dies near the end. At the funeral, Jake's internal monologue and murderous glare at Chapman suggest he wants to erase the Yeerks from existence just like Alloran wanted to. This is played off as good and heroic, like he has found his reason to fight, even though he didn't not have a reason previously.
The pacing is all off. There are multiple school dances mentioned. Has the movie covered three days or five months? They never make it clear.
Tobias does get trapped as a bird early on, but is surprisingly chill and non-angsty about it. He mostly helps Marco crack jokes. He ends up being less of a character and more of a team mascot, filling the usual Funny Talking Animal role. There is an ET reference where Jake bicycles off a hill with Tobias sitting in the basket on the front of his bicycle for some reason.
The merch is terrible and gets Jake's hair color wrong frequently. Does he have black hair? Blond hair? Brown hair? Is Ginger Jake real and can he hurt you? We don't know.
Rachel's outfits are a mishmash of "Punk Rock Barbie" and "The Eighties".
Marco gets zero merchandise. Tobias merch is everywhere, which is odd since the movie was mostly from Jake's persepctive. Cassie's merch all features an outfit she never wore in the movie.
The ending tries to set up a Visser One sequel hook, but does such a terrible job of explaining who or what or why anyone should care that it just leaves audiences confused.
They never show us an Andalite. Elfangor is only mentioned in the voiceover at the beginning, which is set over a scene of Jake bicycling to school in rainy weather. Ax isn't anywhere in the movie.
#I'm getting all the bad ideas out of the way first#so when we get an actual Animorphs movie they have to use good ideas#because if they use any of these bad ideas I will sue#animorphs#animorphs movie ideas

If K. A. Applegate had been RWBY's writer from the get-go, it would be the greatest show to ever exist
#rwde#watching a video on animorphs and how brutal it is and holy shit i forgot how bananas it is#they dump 17000 defenseless yeerks into space. they commit a war crime. and it's hard to argue its the wrong decision#the series constantly hammers in how *young* these kids are while also never holding back the horrors of war#the juxtaposition is a key feature of the series#rwby could never#mostly bc its an entirely different genre. complaining abt child soldiers in shonen is like complaining abt kissing in romance movies#its just par for the course here#if i ever get time im rereading the whole series bc i love me some morally complex plots

I don't know what's happened to media literacy lately but sometimes villains are just bad sometimes they do irredeemable things but that does not mean the creator of said character condones those irredeemable actions
they are the villain you're not always supposed to agree with them or their actions
#actually i know exactly what happened to media literacy#tv shows#movies#thats why its called fiction#fiction writing#video games#cartoons#i dont know how to tag this to get people to read it#reblog this maybe#idk#also im not saying you cant like a villain#but labelling an entire show or movie as problematic for their villain is a bit ridiculous#shows need someone you root against#thats like saying the writers of animorphs want to put slugs into the brains of children to rule the world#because thats what their villains do#if a writer makes the villain do something problematic then they obviously think the action is bad#if the hero was doing the same thing and not criticized about it then we can talk#too many tags
