ANIMATION 102: Animation Tests
As part of my work for Animation 102, I completed my four outstanding animation test exercises over the course of three days. Using my free time during the Easter holidays to rent a space in the university campus's stop-motion animation studio and a stop-motion armature to complete the animations. I also utilized the stop-motion program DragonFrame for the animation process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first animation I started was the animation for lifting a heavy object. Using some footage, I had been able to have filmed by a colleague at the uni of myself lifting a box as a reference for the character's performance. I chose a discarded Post-it note in the other room as the heavy object. One difficulty with this was when the character had to lift the paper, as the hands of my armature didn't have fingers to grab the sides of the paper. I borrowed some white tac from the receptionist and used it to stick the paper to the armature's hands.
Tumblr media
The next day, I worked on the animation for the light lift. I thought, in a similar vein to using the paper as the heavy object in the light lift animation, I'd use a heavy-looking object as a light one to subvert expectation in a comical way. Although I couldn't find a weight or any other heavy-looking object on the campus for me to use, I was able to construct a convincing-looking weight using the spare magnets used for keeping the metal armatures feet in place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another problem I ran into was the armature not being able to lift the weight in the air properly and hold a pose with it, which made these portions of the animation frustrating. Eventually, I realized the problem was the joints were too loose to hold a pose with the weight. So I used the joint adjuster tools that came with the armature to tighten the joints of the figure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next day, I filmed the live-action reference, this time pulling a wheely bin outside my home and pushing a wall for reference in the final two animations, I'd be animating. For the pulling animation, I used some wooden blocks held together with white tac as a stand-in for the bin, using a tiny bit of white tac to keep the hands on the blocks.
Tumblr media
For the push animation, I decided to not use a prop and instead have the shape of a wall be implied through the armature's performance, similar to a classic mime routine.
During the filming of the pull sequence, I realized at some point, the camera had zoomed in randomly in between frames. I figured this must've been because, at some point when I was walking between taking the pictures and checking the computer monitor with the sequence playing, I might've grazed against the camera shaft, making the camera zoom in slightly. It was too late for me to fix the camera and redo the frames. next time I will try to be more aware of my surroundings, especially around the camera.
Finally, after I saved my animations onto a USB to bring home, I uploaded the tests to my Vimeo page and edited together a showreel using Adobe Premiere Pro. Of which I also uploaded to Vimeo.
vimeo
Overall, I'm very satisfied with the work I produced from this part of the Animation 101/102 course. I feel my skills with stop motion, particularly with the software DragonFrame, have greatly improved. It's been really interesting working through practical issues and problem-solving to achieve my desired shots. I hope to create and produce more work with the program and other industry-standard stop-motion software in the future.

Hey guys! It's finally done, my first showreel! The first few clips are from my thesis project what I've been working on this whole time. The two in the middle are other student thesis projects from the Filmakademie Baden-W眉rttemberg- my friend alerted me about the first one when Julia was still looking for animators, and then one from the team brought me to the next project. And the last thing is another personal project, you might recognize the characters? I've been learning a lot over the course of these projects, and I'm glad I can finally show that to you!

ANIMATION 101: SHOWREEL CREATION.
As part of my Animation 101 class, I was tasked to compile the animations I had made so far into an Adobe Premiere Pro project and create a showreel.
The animations I have made so far for this brief include several sequences of different balls in motion of various sizes, materials, and weights produced using Procreate for iPad, two paper cut-out stop motion clips, and a Maya test animation. I couldn't find all the Maya files I worked on, and the one I wanted to access to get high-quality video wouldn't open. So I used a lower-quality version I filmed using my phone. I need to explore and understand how to export into a higher quality in Maya for future projects - I am new to Maya, and this is a learning curve.

I was also required to download a graphic to annotate my various animations (i.e., test 1, test 2, etc.); however, I tried downloading it from Blackboard, but it wouldn't work. I believe this was because I was using a different version of Premiere. Without the graphic, I instead improvised using the Premiere shape tool. Using the video Premiere Pro : 'How to Draw Circle and Rectangle Shapes (EASY and FAST method) by the Youtube channel Adobe in a Minute, and created a similar graphic from scratch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once all the clips were together, and the graphic added, I set about finding a soundtrack to go along with it. It didn't take me long to find a website that provided me with royalty-free stock music to use in my reel. On the website called Mixkit, I found a track entitled 'Hip Hop 02' by artists Lily J that gave the footage a mature and contemporary feeling appropriate for a professional feeling animation reel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'm glad I was able to find a track of such high quality in such a short amount of time on a free music website such as this. Royalty-free music, especially the type found on websites without the requirement to create an account or subscription to download any tracks, tends to be not of best quality, and they often have a bland, soulless sound to them. So I'm happy to have happened upon a website like Mixkit and the excellent work of Lily J.
Once I exported this project as an mp4 file, I finally uploaded my animation reel to my Vimeo account.
vimeo
I am satisfied with my animation showreel. I was able to brush up on my skills with the Premiere Pro software but also my animation editing skills overall. I was able to create a professional-looking and feeling video to showcase my Animation 101 work up to this point. Highlighting my skills and the mediums I can work in. I also discovered new resources such as Mixkit, which I feel will likely come in handy on future projects for areas such as sound and music in my videos.
