Inazuma Japan & The Horned Owls vs. the language barrier

this post was born from a need for language struggles in the 3rd i11 season, and also from how finnish and japanese have a weird overlap while being so vastly different. (Most of the owls have not too much trouble with basic communication in english since it's taught here from early on, and while IJ doesn't do as well, I think Kidou has the best language skills so he'd do the most talking at first)

explaining the jokes n stuff under cut!

first comic:

"Tobitakapuoli" is a mix of Tobitaka and takapuoli, which means backside or a butt in finnish. Valokainen says "I wonder if he has a good butt" but the word for butt is the one mixed with Tobitaka.

(Valokainen is a man of dumb word plays)(like I am)(a friend asked if he's my self-insert and I wasn't able to fully deny)

I dunno if it's common but at least I like to mash up words in odd places, like adding another word to make a single word into a compound word. but I know for a fact it's a common thing to make twisted words, where you have two words and switch up a few of the first letters in both, to make the meaning totally different while the words still sound the same (ruskaa pakkaseen -> paskaa rukkaseen). most of these are really pervy or just plain poop jokes, but the joke lies in that you don't say the twisted version... everyone just knows.

also! even though finnish and japanese are pretty far from each other as languages, there are many words that are in both languages, but have different meanings. that "taka" is one, but also words like hana, kasa, hai, toki, kakka (heh)

second comic:

even if finnish and japanese sound kinda similar in many ways, there's letters and sounds that don't really exist in the other. like the finnish "ti", with a hard T (if you put "talitintti" in ggl translate and read it out as finnish, you can hear how tintti is aprox. pronounced) but in japanese they would pronounce it with ち (chi), making tintti something like chinchi...

.....and yeah chinchin is penis in japanese and that's the joke *bows and escapes from the stage*

I wanna write a wip where Lizzy remembers that Ciel has his ears priced and convinces him to try on a pair of her sparkly dangly earring just for fun while hanging out.

Except Ciel forgets about them, maybe sits down for dinner with the rest of the Midfords with little dangling earrings on that both he and Lizzy forgot about.

Even making it all the way back home, only for a certain butler to comment on the souvenir he’d acquired. Causing Ciel to be overcome with embarrassment, not knowing how he could’ve possibly not noticed that he still had them on.

hi hun 💕 sorry for taking forever to reply to this, i've not been very active on this blog for a lot of reasons right now. but regarding your question, i think my answer is gonna be super disappointing lol. resources are def very very limited, and a lot of what's available isn't translated (much of it is in arabic, but a lot is also in various now dead languages).

there is an english & arabic speaking community on reddit and discord dedicated to wathanism, which is really great and i'd highly recommend it. the discord has a section on books and articles, most of which are academic and peer reviewed in historical journals. since this is a religion that was largely wiped out and has very few people interested in studying it and few resources to even examine, learning about it is kind of a huge undertaking that involves a lot of niche academic texts and a lot of cross referencing.

it's a grind basically lol, but the discord is great because it's a place where people who are very passionate about reconstructing the religion will trudge through those sources very diligently, not just as a detached academic study but as a spiritual "i want to apply this in my own daily life" kind of way, ykwim? so that's very cool. i can't speak to the community too much, cause i mostly just use it as a reference point and don't talk much with people, but it's the most concentrated place of quality knowledge on the subject i know of.

the best crash course, easy to read article i personally know of on the matter is still this paper (if you copy the link into scihub you should have access to it), just bc it hits on the specific things i'm most interested in without being incomprehensible jargon. the way i practice my religion is probably not the most historically accurate tbh; for me, it's just about living by the values of respecting your community and heritage, and i think this paper does a great job of explaining why those were such important values to the old arab pagans. the people on the discord can def give you a better sense of what the practice looked like in Ye Olden Days.

also worth noting: if you're hoping to find like defined, clearly laid out mythology about the arabian gods like there are stories about norse or greek or roman gods, that's rly not what you're gonna find (at least not as far as ive ever known to exist). for the most part, the things you're gonna find are about what people valued, what rituals they had, and how they lived. the vast majority of info we have on the gods is like "people prayed for this goddess to bring good crops and for that god to protect the village," but rarely if ever are there detailed narratives or myths like there are for other old religions.

Hey hi hello! It’s been months since Ive spent any real time on good ol’ Tumblr. So what the heck have I been up to instead??

I binge watched seasons 10-24 of Law & Order: SVU. Why? Couldn’t tell ya. Except that once you start, it’s hard to stop. But I’ve decided I need a break from mommy Olivia Benson before I go back and watch the older, poorly-aged episodes

I’ve started re-learning Japanese! I got a bit into it like over a year ago, but sorta lost motivation. But now I’m keeping up with my daily lessons, and I’d like to be able to take the JLPT N5 test at the end of the year!

I rearranged my room! I always spent way too much time in the same spot in bed - sleeping, watching tv, reading, whatever. And I was starting to have really bad back, shoulder, and hip pain. So, I’ve moved my bedroom furniture around so that I’m forced to sit on my bed from the side, more like a couch. That way, I’m not slouching as much and I can actually get comfortable when I go to sleep. Plus, my room is more open now and not as cluttered. It makes me feel more at peace 😌

I started eating a bit healthier! Honestly I just got real tired of feeling like shit all the time. And the weight I was gaining was a bit much, mostly because my pants were always too tight and hurting my stomach. But now I really do feel better, I’ve lost 5lb, and I’m having less heartburn which is nice.

I’ve been reading a lot! All the gay fantasy romance I can find on Kindle Unlimited. And whooo boy I love it all

I’ve started working on my webtoon again! For some reason I gained like 5 new subscribers this month, after not updating the damn thing in MONTHS. And what do ya know, now I’m only like 6 away from actually earning money from it. Not that money is the motivation, but it would be neat. Plus I still think about my story constantly, so it’s about damn time I continue putting it out there.

I started rewatching Haikyuu for the billionth time. And it is still as comforting and entertaining and heartwarming as ever
