Minawii redesign :3 Original Concept by Skyeruu_art (I still regret not reaching out to them to ask about the redesign process. I only realized that was an option after I submitted them :c ) But I still really like how they turned out!

Yeah it's them sniffl The concept that got me back into the rec/novice team after a big purge of them (I mean you could still resubmit an application but I wasn't sure if I wanted to do that at the time) But look where I am now because of it!

They were scrapped because the anatomy was too weird (which is fair), and I forgot to specify that it would float off the ground for almost all of it's animations (that's on me)

I did try sketching out a few redesigns over the years to see if there were any I liked, but I realized that the roblox limitations would make it really hard to actually have the wings look good when they moved (I wanted the ends of the wings to move like dragontailed butterflies!)

before we met I had no idea shimp had such a dedicated hobby scene and so many morphs, but it makes sense because I'm an isopod hobbyist with 5 species of isopod and know there are 100s of morphs of those lil dudes :>

As such I now want srimp.... how do I keep shramp.... when I clean my room I think I'll have space for a small tank

Keeping shrimp is a bit straight forward but like every animal needs their own specifics.

My last tank all died but after a lot of research I think this new setup is gonna work,,, I'd look into some basics before buying any!! And also make sure to not dump a lot of money into the expensive morphs until you got the hang of it down with some more basic neocaridina :>

i can not express how much it means to me that people were interested in the plush I am selling and bought them ❤️ thank you!!

I hesitated to even post about this but I got laid off from my beloved office manager position at my kennel this last wednesday :( (more under the cut, but it’s long)

i’d been there as a kennel tech and then office manager for four years, and it was unexpected and I didn’t get to say goodbye to any of the dogs (we have about 95% regulars at any given time, i’ve helped raised some of the dogs and i’ve seen some of them almost every shift for the last 4 years too so ive been heartbroken.) They had to lay me off because after i got sick a few years ago i’ve had heart issues that have gotten worse and worse and left me unable to work in the heat or be on my feet too long, both of which would cause my heart rate to skyrocket (POTS-ish, if you are familiar with POTS) They have restructured the business to be less stressful with less dogs/capacity but as a result they only can feasibly employ kennel techs who can work the dogs and the office, which used to be not an issue for me. I was underpaid as an office manager but i told myself it was worth it because after i got sick they were so accommodating and supportive over the years. I thought that my health issues would “get better” cause i truly believed it but i had a cardiologist appointment this week too where my third cardiologist told me there was nothing more they could do for me (i hadn’t told my bosses about this appointment)

That job helped me through a tough time and supported me and i learned so much and I loved my bosses and my coworkers and my dogs. I don’t hold it against them, I just wish they had let me know sooner instead of keeping me in the dark. I still care for the people there. Thank you for reading if you did! I’m starting to feel better but job searching is a daunting task! It’s hard to find animal office related jobs that don’t require you to be on your feet for long periods of time with no breaks

I didn’t want to post about it until i had already sold some of the plush cause I didn’t want that to be a factor in people choosing to purchase them from me 😅 but yeah i’ve been down about this for almost a week now which is why i have been slower at posting.

Mermay Twisted Wonderland Fan Event

All right, since a lot of you seem to enjoy me last Fan Event, I decided to make one of Mermay. The story? While on a school trip to the Atlantica Memorial in the Coral Sea a rouge transformation potion ends up turning several of the students, including Yuu and Grim, into merfolk. Now, the student must find a way to reverse the effects before the transformation becomes permanent.

Yuu: It was really nice of Crowley to make this trip happen.

Ace: Really, cause the last time we were here we had to "borrow" a picture because a certain octopus tricked some of us into a losing contract.

Azul: My contract was fair, you just didn't consider the fact that only at maximum, 50 people would actually pas.

Deuce: He does have a point there.

Grim: Besides, Yuu was able to free us.

Yuu: But I almost lost the dorm because of you three!

Floyd: Aww, little shrimp is being all defensive. Trying to seem big and strong right?

Yuu: *shrieks of terror*

Jade: Little shrimp is so cute when they are scared.

Floyd: Right!? I just wanna give them a nice squeeze!

Grim: I think this is our cue to go!

Ace: Don't need to tell twice!

Yuu: So Jack, I didn't expect you to be here. What, with the fluffy ears you have.

Jack: It is a bother sometimes, but I got used to it.

Jack: Most, if not all the Pomfiore students were not allowed to go.

Ace: Who are you?

Alex: Oh, my name is Alex, I am an axolotl mer and I am studying to be a potion maker or at least a chemist. (Don't worry I will make a post to properly introduce this shy child soon)

Azul: So you made a transformation potion, and it must have gotten out of your hand right?

Alex: Yeah, I can make something to reverse the effects but I am missing a few ingredients. We also might have to hurry.

Yuu: Let me guess, the potions effects will become permanent if we don't reverse the effects in time right?

Alex: Right, so if, I'm sorry what are your names?

Yuu: I'm Yuu, this is Ace, Grim, Deuce, Jack, Azul, and Jade and Floyd.

Alex: Wait, you all are from Night Raven Collage right?

Yuu: Yeah. Is there something wrong with that?

Alex: NO! It's just that I really hope to get into NRC one day.

Yuu: I am sure you will. Now, Azul, Jade, and Floyd, you three help Alex while the rest of us look for those missing ingredients all right.

Lockdown paved the way for many of us to spend an ungodly amount of time researching something previously non-existent in and unessential to our lives. Closed eco-spheres and fancy goldfish are the gateway drugs of this story. 

I had fish growing up, but I think the tank was gone before high school. My father liked to keep all sorts of critters without any real regard for their needs or quality of life. I’m quite surprised anything I kept ever lived considering he passed on that blasé, careless style of fish keeping and animal care to young me. As a fisherman himself, and someone who frequently missed out on emotional growth opportunities and failed trials of judgement due to pharmaceutical malpractice, animal lives didn’t mean much to him. The most consistent recurring dream I have (or had, as it seems) is “remembering” after apparent weeks of having forgotten, that I have fish and a fish room. Half empty, murky tanks with fish that haven't been fed in ages. Yet they are all alive, always. I panic and clean and feed and add water and everything is back to normal, but animals go weeks without care in my dreams and I’m not sure why this is. Lingering guilt of being unable to take care of creatures while you’re too sick to care for yourself is my guess. 

Obvious and relevant psychological distress aside, I spent weeks in quarantine consuming endless fish content. A betta tank was the initial intention, just something little with frilly dragon decorations. A fully planted, naturally scaped 10 gallon tank later (with a quarantine tank in progress) I went a little off track. So here is what I’m rocking now.

Plants: -Mayaca fluviatilis which is growing SO WELL for me. 

-Marimo moss balls

-Monte Carlo that I still do not know how to plant properly, yes I know they look like weird little bushes but they pearl for me so they are at least surviving !?!

-Anubias Nana Petite that is just chillin’ in the flow because I initially tied it to the largest piece of driftwood as the white bacterial slime started engulfing it, and the slime rotted out the roots. I’ll tie it to something eventually but it’s sprouting new leaves being untethered so I’m letting little dude do its thing. 

-Java Moss newly tied to a rock that was also rotting on white slime driftwood initially. 

Red root floaters & Salvinia Cucullata suffering from too much flow and no protective barrier from it hehe. The Fogbit is doing well, though. 

The tank is stocked with corydoras pygmaeus, amano shrimp, nerite snails, and boraras brigittae. Next post I’ll go into the journey that adding fish was, and screwing up the nitrogen cycle with the shimp… 

Unlike past fish keeping as I was taught, I am obsessed and devoted to my emotional support tank. I’m very proud of myself for being able to take care of such a diverse variety of life, regardless of the setbacks from real time learning.

America's national bird is threatened by hunters. Not that hunters are taking aim at the iconic bald eagle, but bald eagles are dying after eating lead bullets, as CNN reported.

The Cape Fear Raptor Center, North Carolina's largest eagle rehab facility, has recently treated seven eagles for lead poisoning, executive director Dr. Joni Shimp told CNN. The center also said that 80 percent of the eagles it has had to euthanize since November were because of lead poisoning.

Similarly, officials from the Hatteras Island Wildlife Rehabilitation in North Carolina said that 70 to 80 percent of the eagles they treat have high levels of lead in their system, and the effects are devastating, according to WTKR in North Carolina and coastal Virginia.

"The bird is lethargic, it's limp, it may have vision problems, staggering, legs not working correctly," explained Lou Browning of Hatteras Island Wildlife Rehabilitation to WTKR.

As CNN explained, hunters use lead bullets to kill deer and other animals. When the eagles feast upon the dead animals, they are indirectly exposed to toxic levels of lead.

"Hunters in no way, shape or form intentionally try to kill an eagle, vulture or any other species," Shimp said to CNN. "If the deer isn't killed immediately and runs and the hunter can't find the deer, the eagles and vultures find it and ingest the lead."

Shimp also explained some of the neurological problems that result from lead exposure to eagles. She told CNN that the eagles will show a "lack of judgment when flying across roadways, the inability to take flight quickly resulting in being hit by cars, seizures and death."

The bullets hunters use often scatter into tiny fragments that travel through an animal's body.

Studies Supporting the use of Animation in Advertising.

Peripheral route of processing according to the Elaboration Likelihood Model uses different types of affective stimuli (e.g., background music, pleasant visual scenes, characters, and images), as these elements require less cognitive effort on the viewer’s part. Because animated stimuli rely heavily on these more aesthetic factors, research on animated ads should note the influence of lower-level peripheral processing routes on viewer persuasion.

Classical conditioning suggests that positive attitudes towards an advertised product (conditioned stimulus) might develop through the product’s association with other stimuli that consumers relate to positively (unconditioned stimuli). Attractive colours, pleasant music, and humour act as the potential unconditioned stimuli in commercials (Gorn 1982, p.94).

Addition of sound and motion in TV commercials not only affect the executional features of ads but these elements also increase its nature. TV commercial is also can be defined as an unbroken flow of sounds, video and graphical effects. As a result, television commercials have a spontaneous attention grabbing aspect (Shimp, 1997).  

Baylor, Ryu and Shen (2003) examine the effects of voice and animation on learning and motivation. The findings of the research reveal that people tend to learn more notably when the agent is animated. Another interesting fact found in this study is that although animation helps in learning still it reduces the motivation level of participants about the topic. Effects of voice on motivation also found that participants tend to feel more motivated when human voice is used on agents as compared to machine generated voice.  

Fangfang and Sundar (2004) examine how pop-up windows and online animated ads can influence memory and favorable response on those who work online. Four online portals websites are selected for study and experimental research. Each websites contain a banner ad and it’s either animated or static and a pop up that falls under the same criteria. The response of participants is recorded through a post exposure paper and a paper based questionnaire. They report that pop up adds bring out orienting responses, and compared to banner ads, the pop up ads resulted in lower ad recognition but higher recall.

If animation is employed in an electronic presentation then it may result in better recalling as compared to no animation use (Park, 2006). Further he argued that continuous display of animation might have a better effect on students recall than no display of animation graphics. But there observed no positive effect on student’s recall after a simultaneous display of animated graphics as matched up to no display of animated graphics, although it did contain animation.  

Yoo and Patricia (2008), attempt to examine, the effects of animated banner ads through an online experiment. The findings bring quite expected results as it was observed that banners ads which used animations are more effective on consumers as compared to the static ones. Similarly they are capable of catching more attention and are remembered by consumers at a higher level when compared to static category. Moreover, an individual’s product involvement moderates the effects of animated banner advertising on recall, and clickthrough intention.

The use of animation in websites has been multiplied over a few years by a substantial number of firms. Although the expenditure spent on animated sites are far more as compared to what it costs in the making of static web sites, still its usage in online media is at its peak at present. Animation effects in changing consumers’ behavior and action towards a particular product was studied by Kai Lung, findings revealed that usage of animation in ads make it easy to recall, however still it does not guarantee that consumers will change their production loyalty which they found more “utilitarian” in nature (Kai Lung HUI et al., 2009).

Milujem kurča, milujem mäso ako také a síce zbožňujem zvieratká a rada by som kvôli nim bola vegetariánkou, mäsu jednoducho odolať nedokážem. Obzvlášť závislá som od ázijskej kuchyne. Či už ide o indonézsku, japonskú, filipínsku, čínsku, vietnamskú, indickú... v každej si nájdem niečo, čo mi chuti. Ázijská mi jednoducho tak všeobecne najlepšie pasuje. Vyrástla som aj na filipínskych receptoch ako nilaga, menudo, adobo a iných ulam jedlách!

Nemôžem žiť bez štiplavého jedla, ale fakt poriadne štipľavého až celá sčerveniem! Milujem wasabi, kajanské korenie, syr, nakladaný zázvor, jazmínovú ryžu, pita chlieb, fazuľu a sójovku som schopná celú len tak vypiť z tej umelej rybičky, ktorú dávajú k sushi... v horšom prípade rovno z misky či fľašky... Viete ako si niektorí ľudia striekajú šľahačku priamo do úst? Tak ja to robím práve so sójovkou. Oh a ľúbim brokolicu a hríbiky! A neviem sa dojesť melónového chleba! Čo je asi problém, keďže je vraj fakt nezdravý... No a nenávidím kokos, je odporný. Taktiež nemám rada, viete, žĺtok vo vajíčku, surovú uhorku, zeler a varenú či dusenú mrkvu, ble.”

,,Neznášam športy, vlastne mám rada len korčuľovanie, hlavne krasokorčuľovanie a plávanie. Občas si trochu zabehám, urobím nejaké cviky na pekné telo a idem na jógu, lebo bez toho by som kompletne rozkysla, ale na to musím mať fakt dobrú náladu. Fakt, najlepší šport je pre mňa  sex. Síce som dosť rýchla, čo ma celkom prekvapuje, no pokiaľ nemusím, tak proste neutekám. Ale nenávidím, nenávidím loptové športy! In-class Questions:

Zoos

1a. What role, if any, should zoos play in conservation/education?

I believe that zoos have a huge role to play in conservation as well as in education. The main goal of a zoo has usually been to educate and give the public the opportunity to see the animals they are learning about. However, “traditional” zoos did this by having animals in small cages so that people could get as close to them as possible. Today, education is achieved by not only having informational plaques in front of the enclosures, but also is done by zoo attendants who interact with the visitors, and through social media. Conservation is also a more modern take on zoos. For example, the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre in the Assiniboine Park Zoo is the “headquarters” of polar bear research in Manitoba, and even in all of Canada. I’ve had the opportunity to visit inside the centre and polar bear holding facility at the zoo where public access is usually restricted as part of a pre-veterinary student tour. It is obvious to me that they are doing very important work with polar bear conservation, and the polar bears are getting a lot of enrichment and zookeeper interaction (if they want it) behind the scenes. Another example of zoos working toward conservation is the case of the black-footed ferret (www.torontozoo.com/conservation/captive-breeding.asp?pg=bff). The Toronto Zoo worked with Parks Canada to reintroduce black-footed ferrets to the Great Plains of Saskatchewan after they were reduced to only 18 animals in Wyoming in 1981 and listed as Extinct in Canada. After an almost two-decade long captive breeding/recovery program, 34 ferrets were reintroduced to Grasslands National Park on October 2nd, 2009. I remember watching this on The Nature of Things when I was younger and marveling at such an emotional and important moment for conservationists and zoos in Canada.

1b. Is it ethical to keep animals in zoos? If so, what size/type of animal/zoo?

I believe that zoos are ethical as long as the animals being kept there are living the best life they can possibly have in that circumstance. This includes proper space, food, socialization, and enrichment. If an animal is kept at a zoo, it is important for the welfare of the animal that it is a zoo accredited by CAZA (Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums), as we talked about in class. According to the CAZA website, “thanks to its comprehensive accreditation program and Code of Professional Ethics, CAZA-accredited zoos and aquariums are recognized for their high standards of animal care” (http://caza.ca/). However, It is important to be cautious of “private zoos,” because they are rarely accredited and are owned by a people who may not have any wildlife or zoological experience. For example, we discussed the Discovery Wildlife Park in class, and how they have many problems with their animals being treated more like humans, as well as problems with enclosures. A recent article on this zoo (http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/bear-ice-cream-dairy-queen-alberta-investigation-1.4495179) shows the bear being fed ice cream in a car at Dairy Queen, and this is very concerning because this bear is not being treated as a bear should be and is not being allowed to display natural bear behaviors. Obviously, there are animals that just aren’t meant to live in captivity, and they should not be kept in zoos. In class, the example of elephants was given because they are prone to obesity, infection, and a shortened life span in a zoo setting. As well, elephants are huge animals that travel long distances with their large family groups, and zoos are just not able to accommodate behaviors like this. Another example brought up in class was the black bears that Dr. Hunter filmed on her visit to Assinibione Park Zoo. The bear was pacing a lot and when another bear came into the enclosure, there was some growling and aggressive posturing between the two, suggesting that this enclosure was not enough space for two bears.

1c. Do you enjoy visiting zoos?

I have loved visiting the zoo ever since I was young, and some of my fondest memories were going to “Boo At The Zoo”. However, after zoos admission prices went up and life got busy, my family and I didn’t visit the zoo for a few years. Recently the new renovations done at the Assinibione Park Zoo have drawn us back, and I really enjoy spending time at the zoo when I spend time in nature at Assinibione Park. Now that I’m older and have a clearer idea of what I’d like to do in life, I’ve found myself more drawn to the aspect of working in a zoo as a veterinarian, and so I’ve taken my parents to the zoo a couple of times to rekindle our old love for it. I’ve gotten to visit the Assinibione Zoo behind the scenes a couple of times, and I’ve also worked with them quite closely because of my job at Wildlife Haven. A few summers ago, the zoo kept and released two pelicans for us when we didn’t have the room for them, and I even got to visit them! So, overall, I love to visit zoos, and I feel that supporting zoos so that they can further improve their practices is one of the best things that can be done for conservation.

Food

2a. What do you like about your food system?

After taking into account what we’ve spoken about in class, and the information provided by the movie “Fresh” that we watched in class, it seems like the food system in general needs a lot of improving. However, there are a few things that I quite like about my own food system. I like that there are some restaurants in/around Winnipeg, such as Pine Ridge Hollow in Bird’s Hill Park, where I can get a seasonal menu based on what’s available in the province from farmers or the restaurant’s own garden. This is a great way to support local food producers if there is no opportunity to buy directly from farmers, fishers, or hunters. I like how every summer my parents and I grow vegetables our big backyard garden. This opportunity allows us to grow a lot of our own food and not have to buy many vegetables from the store for most of the year, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, potatoes, celery, and asparagus! What I also like about my food system is the ability, because my family and I live outside the city, to raise our own chickens and bees. My dad and I purchase baby chicks or young chickens and we raise them over the summer, and that’s where we get our eggs! They lay so much when they’re free-run that we usually can’t eat all the eggs, so we share with friends. We also occasionally use them for meat, so that reduces our factory-farmed meat consumption. My family is currently planning to begin raising bees for honey, possibly starting this summer. The hope is that we can find a mentor to teach us bee-keeping, do some research, and be able to contribute pollinators to the environment as well as produce honey. Overall, I like that the local or home-grown food in my food system tastes better, is more nutritious, has less of an environmental impact, and supports local food producers.

2b. What do you dislike about your food system?

I dislike how cheap supermarket foods can be, even though they have taken many more resources (pesticides, fertilizers, antibiotics, etc) and miles to get from the field to the store. Compared to this, produce from a farmer’s market can seem much more expensive. It makes sense to me that “you get what you pay for,” so you’re getting a much healthier food item when you buy it fresh and local, but this aspect of my food system is difficult to explain to others. For example, I would very much want to do most of my shopping at a farmer’s market but my parents are wary of the higher prices. I also dislike that these cheaper supermarket foods that are highly processed often taste really good due to the fats and sugars in them, but have very low nutritional value. This makes it difficult for many people of low income to switch from these cheaper foods to fresher, local food. The major thing that I dislike about the food system is factory farming of livestock. It is frustrating that this has become the new norm for the agriculture industry because not only does it often have animal welfare issues attached to it, but there are also environmental concerns. For example, in the movie “Fresh”, they spoke about how the huge amount of manure produced from hog farming is extremely concentrated and full of ammonia and residual antibiotics. This manure often ends up an run-off in areas that are prone to flooding, and has large environmental impacts as it overloads bodies of water with nutrients and pharmaceuticals. Overall, the cheapness and lack of nutrition of processed foods, and the environmental impacts of factory farming are aspects I dislike about the food system.

Oceans

3a. What are your primary concerns about the oceans?

My primary concerns about the oceans are the issues of by-catch and plastic pollution. Last semester I took a course called Marine Biodiversity (BIOL 4220), where I learned about the various conservation issues concerning the oceans, and what can be done to help mitigate these issues. This was probably one of the most interesting courses I have taken at the U of M, and it changed the way I see the world quite drastically. In fact, one of the projects I did in that class was concerning the issue of by-catch. According to the Consortium of Wildlife Bycatch Reduction, by-catch is the marine life that is unintentionally caught in fishing nets and is thrown away at sea, often dead or with injuries resulting in death. Every year, 7.3 million tons of marine animals are accidentally caught as by-catch (http://www.bycatch.org/about-bycatch). After learning about this in my Marine Biodiversity class, I stopped eating shrimp completely. This is because, according to the FAO, every 1 lb of shimp caught results in up to 20 lbs of by-catch, including sea turtles, sharks, sea birds, whales, seals, and various species of fish.

Plastic pollution is another huge problem in our oceans. In fact, there is 2.5 million square kilometers of plastic floating in the southern Pacific Ocean, as well as in other patches around the world (Charlotte Brassey, BBC News). Plastic items break down into microplastics, which are almost impossible to clean up, and bioaccumulate throughout the food chain (Carl Safina and Jessica Perelman, National Geographic). The tiny plastic beads in various cosmetic products such as face washes and body scrubs are also a large source of microplastics. According to National Geographic, the European Union countries alone used 4360 tons of microbeads in 2012, all of which are washed down the drain, eventually ending up in our oceans.

3b. What, if anything, do you plan to do about it?

Although these may seem like far away problems, there are actions we can all take to help with these issues. To reduce by-catch, I use Seafood Watch, created by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, to check whether a fish is sustainably caught or not. Seafood Watch allows you to see where the seafood available on the market comes from, and what the effects on the environment and on marine life are when you buy that seafood. For example, you can search “tuna” and the website will give you recommendations on what products are better to buy. Seafood Watch recommends buying tuna that has been fished by hand-operated pole-and-lines, and recommends avoiding tuna that is fished using drifting longlines or purse seines, which have a high amount of by-catch. This website also tells you where the best and worst fishing occurs in terms of sustainability, and what eco-certifications to look for on fish packaging. Speaking of packaging, the way I plan to help the issue of plastic pollution is to reduce the amount of plastic I use as much as possible. It may seem like someone living in the middle of the continent cannot do much to reduce plastic waste in the oceans. However, according to National Geographic, 80% of ocean plastic comes from land, much of which may be carried by wind currents from far inland. So, I plan to use recyclable plastics and reusable items when possible, and I plan to stop using cosmetic products that contain microbeads.
