A new controversy has erupted in Maharashtra’s Mahayuti government as Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis approved the long-awaited appointments of Special Officers on Duty (OSD) and Personal Assistants (PA) for ministers—three months after the government took office. However, his decision to reject 16 names has sparked outrage among political circles.

Why Were 16 Names Rejected?

Who Are OSDs & PAs? Why Are They Important?

Every minister in Maharashtra is entitled to a 35-member staff, including: ✔ 1 Personal Assistant (PA) ✔ 3 Officers on Special Duty (OSD)

🔹 These roles require CMO approval and strict eligibility: ✅ Must be a government employee ✅ Must hold a graduate degree ✅ Must have a clean track record ✅ Must have administrative & communication skills

Typically, Deputy Secretaries or Section Officers are selected for these positions.

Why Has Fadnavis' Decision Triggered Political Turmoil?

The attack occurred on Monday evening when Deshmukh was returning from a meeting in Narkhed, en route to Katol. Around 8 pm, stones were thrown at his car near Belphata on Jalalkheda Road in Nagpur district, resulting in serious injuries to the former minister. Deshmukh was rushed to Katol Civil Hospital before being transferred to a private hospital in Nagpur for further treatment. The Nagpur Rural Superintendent of Police (SP), Harssh Poddar, confirmed that a case has been registered against four unidentified persons on charges of attempt to murder. A forensic team visited the scene to gather technical evidence. Senior police officials and the district collector also visited the spot. NCP (SP) spokesperson Vedprakash Arya condemned the attack, calling it a cowardly act by political opponents who feared a crushing defeat in the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections.
