since it’s astrology hour(s) i am coming to you with thoughts!! i am cancer sun/scorpio moon/sag rising. curious to hear your thoughts on that combo- i’ve always been very emotionally intense/introspective/empathetic etc and felt very connected to my sun and moon signs.

for a long time i was confused by my sag rising bc i don’t necessarily feel like i relate to stereotypical sag qualities? i’ve begun to understand it more with time and perhaps see it most in my inexplicable need to make everyone laugh when i’m in a group of people.

i won’t go into the full run down because it does sound like you have some familiarity with the function of your sun and moon! A water sun and moon is a curse and a blessing I understand too well myself. scorpio validating cancer’s worst fears may be a struggle you occasionally face and if so my advice is to embrace that cancer benefit of the doubt thing. and now for some interesting sort of sociology.

every person I’ve ever met that is a fire rising without another fire sign or even a more grounded earth sign surrounding it in their big 3 says they do not relate to their rising. I went back and dug through old convos/readings I’ve done last night and out of 15 people I did readings for with a fire rising, the only people who were like “oh yeah I really feel like a Leo/sag rising” specifically were those who had a Capricorn/taurus sun or moon or Aries sun/moon.

Sadly, and I don’t wanna upset anyone, my theory is that it stems from childhood. Fire sign children have a lot of joie de vivre, they’re the kids who are usually always talking or putting on a show. They’re bright and intelligent and outgoing but sometimes they’re told that they’re behaving like they’re too much. I don’t know if that has ever been your experience but if someone is told that they’re “too much” enough times, they’ll eventually dampen those traits and I have a feeling if this has ever been your experience, sensitive cancer has rushed in to overcompensate and overpowered Sagittarius a bit and defensive and protective Scorpio has validated it.

Fire signs aren’t difficult to have but they’re difficult to explain to others who don’t hold the placements. Stereotypes reign supreme especially with Sagittarius but if you want to embrace your rising sign and still validate your sun/moon, my advice is to let the more boisterously playful and whimsical energy of Sagittarius be what you embrace over directness or adventurousness if that’s what is most comfortable and doesn’t make you feel like you’re wearing a mask. Sag can indeed manifest as the life of the party in unexpected ways (making every laugh as you mentioned, class clown energy on occasion) so don’t be afraid!!!

And on the water Venus 4 water Venus front - nobody understands a water sign better than another water sign. Cancer Venus wants to be desired and wanted and courted and Scorpio Venus wants to give and desire and have so they tend to be very intense but satisfied duos.

1) Olive x Oscar (Odd Squad, 2014-?) - these two will always have a special place in my heart, thanks in part to the many fanfictions I wrote devoted to exploring their relationship. They're a noncanon rare pair for sure, but their chemistry is obvious, they share the only onscreen 1-on-1 hug in the whole show, and canonically they genuinely care about each other. Plus their two personalities combined (Olive's ambition and insecurity, Oscar's awkwardness and constant desire to help others) sum up my own, so how can I not ship them? Also you are being warned, this is the only straight ship on this list, so buckle up motherfuckers

2) Raven x Starfire (Teen Titans, 2003-06) - similarly, these two are like two halves of my own personality, which is what initially attracted me to this ship. Plus, they were the first LGBTQ+ pair I shipped after discovering I'm bi, and I hope one day to have a relationship with a girl where we're like these two. And like don't get me wrong, I'm a slut for Robstar and BBRae, but Raven and Starfire emotionally compliment each other and I absolutely get a gay vibe from both of them, so...

3) Ari x Dante (Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, 2012) - I read this book in 2015, the early summer after my junior year of high school, and it has been my favorite novel ever since. Through Ari's eyes and through Saenz's movingly gorgeous prose, I fell in love with the two summer boys who bonded over rain, animals, emotions, and their Mexican heritage. If you haven't read this book, please do because Ari and Dante will change your life.

4) Kate x Emaline (Everything Sucks!, 2018) - okay so I've been a huge fan of actress Peyton Kennedy ever since she appeared on Odd Squad at the age of 10 as Dr. O, so over the years I've kept up with her various projects and was super excited when she signed on with Netflix in 2017 because I knew this would be her breakout role. She brought a unique plaintive honesty to Kate Messner to compliment Sydney Sweeney's fiery passion as Emaline Addario, and it was impossible for me not to fall in love with them and their innocent love. And if that's not enough, they kissed during one of my favorite rock ballads, "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran. It's a no-brainer and Kate gives me hope that the girl I plan to ask out next week will say yes.

5) Rose x Juleka (Miraculous Ladybug, 2015-?) - this one is almost entirely due to the AO3 fanfic "Powers of Invisibility," the author of whom I can't recall at the moment, but any ML fans reading this should go check it out immediately, it's sooooooo good. After reading this fic, I voraciously devour any Julerose scenes I run across in the canonical show, no matter how short. Sure, sure, no one can topple the supremacy of the All-Powerful Miraculous Lovesquare (TM), but it saddens me that my precious girls don't get more of the love they deserve from the fandom.

All I Wanted Was a Skateboard: A Tattoo Story

So I call myself trying to get into long boarding at the age of 28. I have never done it before, and I figure, it’s something to learn for the next summer in Chi-Town. I didn’t have the money to buy it new, so when a post came up on the Chicago Queer Exchange, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity! After a few days of being stuck in this conflicting yet revealing experience known as retrograde (woof), I needed something to look forward to. Interesting enough, and fitting for retrograde altogether, I got so much more than I expected. So I meet Ari, this really chill Trans man from Chicagoland who’d been living in the city for years! Great people, and the board was sick as fuck. It was a longboard with X-Files Decals. CLUTCH! When we talked more, it turned out that he was really in love with the board, and while we was prepared, I could tell he wasn’t super excited about the idea of selling it. I totally felt that in major ways. I thought about all the times I’ve tried to sell my bike to make money, and how I’m glad I never did, cause of how much it meant to me. That’s what this board meant to Ari, and I related in a major way. That’s when I saw his tattoo setup, and gears started turning. Turns out Ari had only been tattooing for like 7 months, but after I saw the tattoos he put on himself, I was like, “Yo, maybe you can just tattoo me instead! That way you can keep your board, and make some money still! Ari dug it, and so we got to chatting. Turns out the tattoo that had stuck in his head the hardest, was one that I’ve been wanting the longest: I was finally getting my @!^-216 tattoo! For those who may not know, 216 is the area code of Cleveland, Ohio, my hometown. It’s also my fraternity nickname from college. I know, me a fraternity man?! How ironic. XP But when I was in undergrad, all I could talk about was how much I loved my city, and everything it had given to me. Years ago, my area code became my Facebook signature, because I always wanted to remember my home. This year, I’ve been feeling that homesickness in a major way, and I knew that once again, I would not be home for Christmas, or any other holiday for that matter. It kinda bummed me out, cause I miss my family a bunch, and this year I even got close, but for reasons I’m not sure I’m ready to voice consistently, I kinda chickened out. This tattoo, this small self care item, which was literally the cost of the board without the tip, was definitely the way to go. So we set up shop in Ari’s house, put on some Screaming Females, and got to work! Ari was super cool while he was tattooing me. We shared stories about our depression, talked about dismantling white supremacy, pets, and how awful TV has become, and how he first got into stick and poke tattoos before getting his first gun. We talked about how he only wants to do Trans and Queer canvases, and bounced ideas off each other’s heads, and that was all before the ink was even in progress! One of the biggest things we talked about was the fact that these were finger tattoos, and how I was supposed to be screaming like a banshee, but instead I was just having conversation and taking snaps of the process. It’s been like this since I can remember. As it turned out, high pain tolerance for the both of us came with the territory of our trauma. Tattoos were healing for us both, because they brought us back to the real world. It was nice to not have to justify my love for the pain to someone, because it made sense to him too. Both us of being major into kink helped solidify this feeling a bunch! It was amazing to see Ari get into his work. There was a moment where something clicked for him, something that hadn’t yet from what he told me. It was dope to witness that happen as his canvas, and watch him get into a solid groove by the time he was done filling the tattoos in. I got to see him finesse the edges that he was nervous to touch with larger needles at first, and the look in his eyes when it hit was one I was honored to be a part of. After we finished the tattoos, I began to notice cool things that had popped up inside the design! On my right index and middle finger, there are now three more meanings: 0.I’m a twin, and both our names begin with V. My twin brother got his V tattoo, and I always told him I’d get mine next! Well as it turns out the ^symbol that I use on my signature gave me my V tattoo when it reads upside down! 0.I’m the 6th child out of my mother’s children, and the 6 of us had been joking about getting Roman numerals tattooed on us for what number we represented. Being the last two children meant that my twin brother now had his V tattoo, and because the exclamation point reads upside down like a lowercase I, I now had my vi tattoo! 0.During a family picnic one year, me and my twin stood back to back to take a picture. Without thinking, I threw up the deuces, and he threw up the middle finger. We repeat this photo whenever we can, and next time, I’ll be able to throw deuces with my triple meaning tattoos, symbolizing my relationship with my twin brother, and my birth as my mother’s 6th child. And to think, all I was gonna do was pick up the board, pay some cash, maybe not have the spoons to ride, and not have all these amazing memories to keep! Now I can keep my city with me, and once again, I can keep my family with me. I’m super grateful to Ari, and how quick he jumped in to give me these dope pieces of art. Like, dude literally traced off his phone to make it happen. It was dope to be one of his first canvases. If you’re ever on the fence to be tattooed by someone who’s new, I say give it a shot! But if you’re gonna do it, just make sure that you’re with someone who makes you feel comfortable, and really cares about what they’re putting on your body. The Kentucky Armageddon

The Commonwealth of Kentucky, best known for its weirdly colored grass, fine bourbon and equestrian pageantry, is about to be destroyed by the Trump administration. Many will suffer and perhaps die because Kentucky obtained a Medicaid waiver to impose additional and often insurmountable hardships on poor people receiving their free health care from the State. Since all I need to know, I learned on Twitter, allow me to share with you some illuminating insights from the Twitterati.

The evil Republican Governor of Kentucky, Matt Bevin, is salivating at the prospect off changing Medicaid as we know it, which obviously means that poor people and especially people of color will be suffering greatly under this plan. You really don’t need to know more, since this should be reason enough to mobilize the worried wealthy, who are tossing and turning in their featherbeds night after night, searching for ways to save the poor. For those who are neither worried nor wealthy enough to really care, here are the ominous provisions of the Kentucky racist, homophobic and xenophobic plan to change Medicaid (it is all these things because it was not only approved, but encouraged by the Trump administration, and we all know what that means).

The most egregious transgression in the Kentucky HEALTH plan is the imposition of work requirements on Medicaid beneficiaries. The first thing that comes to my mind when they say “work requirements” is that sign at the entrance to Auschwitz saying that work makes you free. In Kentucky, the Republicans argue that work makes you healthy. Same thing. So, what are those monstrous work requirements? Medicaid recipients who are not children, who are not below the poverty line, who are not elderly, who are not pregnant, who are not disabled, who are not medically or mentally frail, who are not providing care to children or other disabled individuals, who are not experiencing hardships such as domestic abuse or homelessness or other disruptions in their lives, must spend approximately 4 hours a day in school (any school), training (any training), apprenticing, acquiring useful skills, volunteering in the community, searching for a job or actually working somewhere.

Wait, wait…. Don’t raise your eyebrows and don’t think or say anything. If you are reading this, you are most likely rich, likely white, well-educated and perhaps even male. Medicaid beneficiaries are none of these things. We all know that any of those endeavors could be truly insurmountable hardships for people who are poor, black or Hispanic, uneducated and female. We know that because we are not racists, misogynists or just plain bigoted SOBs, like the Republicans running Kentucky and that insufferable man running the country (or so he thinks).

Besides, most Medicaid beneficiaries who don’t fall in the exempt categories are already working. The ones who don’t work, or study, or do anything beneficial for themselves or others, are experiencing circumstances beyond their control. Helping them gain control over their lives is not Medicaid’s job because health and wellbeing have nothing to do with socioeconomic circumstances. And even if Kentucky wanted to “nudge” people into, say, getting their GED by funding a special rewards account, the bureaucracy involved in tracking all sanctioned activities, all exemptions and special circumstances is just too daunting for “these people” to navigate. Trust me on this one, I read it straight from the keyboards of Hollywood celebrities and several current and former big health care executives.

The second affront to humanity in the Kentucky plan is to charge poor people premiums for health insurance. Not only that, but those who can’t pay the premiums may be kicked off Medicaid. Granted the premiums range from $1 to $15 (in lieu of regular copays), and all the exemptions for ill health, frailty and poverty do apply here as well, but that still leaves a sizeable number of poor people who could be denied medical care just because they forgot to pay the monthly dollar twice in a row, or couldn’t afford the higher premium. These highly discriminatory practices targeting the poor are unheard of in other industries or even in the commercial segment of health care itself, where insurance premiums are largely voluntary.

To be fair to Kentucky, there is a mechanism by which people who did not pay their premiums on time can regain their Medicaid coverage, which brings us to provisions reminiscent of the Jim Crow days in the South. The Kentucky plan, you see, has a literacy provision for regaining access to care. This is obviously targeted at people of color and immigrants from what the GOP Leader calls “shithole” countries, which as every wealthy person in Bel Air knows, cannot read or write, and as evidenced by the thumbprint (or large X, depending on the State) appearing on most Medicaid applications. I have zero doubt that the Attorney General of the State of California will be taking the depraved Governor of Kentucky, and the Trump administration that enabled him, to court, and I have no doubt that the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals will find in favor of justice and equality, as it always does.

Until then, it seems that some Medicaid beneficiaries in Kentucky may have to sit through torturous health literacy or financial literacy classes, where they teach boring stuff about how to deal with debt, how health insurance works and how one can navigate these treacherous waters. There is no mention of a test or anything at the end, but this still seems like an unwarranted and blatantly racist imposition on “these people”. Even more outrageous though is that Kentucky is providing incentives, which can be used to purchase gym memberships, for Medicaid beneficiaries to take other classes, such as chronic care management or nutrition or drug addiction coping skills. What do illiterate people, drug addicts and all “these people” need gym memberships for? It’s like telling them to “eat cake” ….

And on and on goes the Kentucky HEALTH plan, listing one offensive section after another. The problem with this plan, which will live in infamy until the Sun goes supernova, is the cold, heartless and blatantly racist assumption that people who need Medicaid are as capable of functioning in modern society as anybody else. It ignores decades of teachings. It ignores hundreds of years of slavery and Anglo Saxon colonialist supremacy. And it ignores basic Christian values, because Jesus didn’t just sit there giving classes on how to fish. He gave people fish, and it worked great for Him and for His followers, eventually. If you see yourself as the Lord and Savior of huddled masses, you will want to do what Jesus did. If you feel equal to people who need Medicaid, but perhaps a bit luckier at this moment, you will dismiss everything I wrote here as total bullshit.
