Stan Culture - The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Modern day fandom is defined by the use of social media, with fans basing themselves on platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Tumblr. A further development in fandom is the invention of what is known as ‘stan culture’, an Internet phenomenon that has “become synonymous with hardcore fans of a celebrity,” taking across on all social media platforms (Whitehead, 2017). Radulovic & Haasch (2018) describe stan culture as a collection of different fandoms and as a community which signifies “individuals congregated around certain, specific interests ranging from queer identity to K-pop groups” and these communities are formed to see their pop culture icon succeed. In some cases, this devotion and dedication which may initially be admirable, turns toxic and stans become aggressive towards those who do not ‘stan’ their favourite celebrity (Whitehead, 2017).

As with fandom, stan culture bases itself on the support of a celebrity and their work. For example, on Twitter it is easy to come across Harry Styles ‘stans,’ (a term interchangeable with ‘fans’) Taylor Swift stans and other celebrities; these stans are often easy to distinguish on social media through usernames, profile pictures, and biographies. The role of social media is to connect people, inform users and bring together people based on their shared interests (Westerman, Spence and Heide, 2013). In the case of stan culture, social media gives stans of a specific celebrity an opportunity to create and build relationships with people who have the same interests, discussing their daily lives, fandom activity and their favourite celebrity. To an extent, stanning has existed since celebrity culture emerged, but the rise of the Internet has enabled fans to take their enthusiasm further by creating communities alongside those who support the same pop culture phenomenon (Salazar, 2018).

Nevertheless, the anonymity of the Internet means that stans are sometimes vicious towards people who do not agree with their opinions, even leading to cyberbullying and death threats (Guerrero-Pico, Establés, Ventura, 2018). The dangers of stan culture are exemplified through the case of the response to Ariana Grande’s 7 Rings video, with her being accused by many that she was appropriating black culture in the video. Angus (2019) tweeted her disproval, and Grande’s stans flooded her mentions and directed messages telling her to delete the tweet, resulting in her stans getting Angus’ account suspended. This displays how stans sometimes harass people who do not agree with them, and the lengths they will go to prove their dedication towards a celebrity.

Additionally, the rising issue of ‘cancel culture,’ in which a celebrity’s career is seen as over if they do something problematic, means that stans have the ability to make or break someone’s career (Mulcahy, 2018). The #IsOverParty trend on Twitter is a consistent part of cancel culture, with celebrities being ‘cancelled’ for minuscule incidents and lapses in judgement. With this being ingrained in the concept of stan culture, in addition to the toxic practices when there is a slight disagreement, the normalisation of stan culture must be treated accordingly, with stans becoming aware of their unhealthy behaviour.
