An idea for a reform of the linemarker

From the desk of the weapon design devision of Nouveau

The Squidforce turf war committee has given us a chance to reform the line marker’s design, we shall not waste this opportunity. Here is the reform that the weapon design team at Nouveau has came up with.

The line marker will now come with a tiny explosive cap at the back of it. If the marker directly hits an opponent this cap will stick to them and prepare to explode, creating a boom that does 60 damage. This boom can be avoided if the cap’s host submerges themselves in ink for 1.3 seconds without leaving the ink. If this happens the cap will fall off and won’t explode. If the player doesn’t submerge themselves in ink they will not be able to heal and the cap will explode in 2.3 seconds. Submerging in ink will reset this timer even if it isn’t submerged long enough to destroy the cap. In addition to this cap, the lingering line the marker leaves behind will now deal 30.7 damage to opponents.

When I first started playing TTRPGs and heard the word metagaming it described two very similar but distinct things: 1. The player who, while playing in a prewritten adventure, goes out and buys a copy of it, reads ahead, and uses that info to solve the puzzles and find the hidden items 2. The player who grabs a copy of the Monster Manual during/before a fight and uses that info to cheat in combat So it has been very weird for me to see it applied to anything that is not the above (or something very close to it) and in 90% of current usage feels so incredibly trivial. Like to me it means very intentional and clear cheating, and referencing specific kinds of meta game knowledge. A lot of games (like a game system without combat stats or in a campaign written by the gm) don't even have the potential for this! (To be clear because of the context of the current usage: the second player here isn't getting stuff like "trolls are weak to fire" from the Monster Manual but "I know that troll has 20 AC, I rolled an 18 but have an ability that adds +2, I'll use that now because I know it will hit" or the exact mechanics of a medusa's gaze so they can angleshoot.)

Roleplaying games are probably the only games-related hobby where there's people who flaunt their ignorance of the rules and actually think knowing the rules/playing in a way that the rules encourage is bad

The new wording for O-Ring type cards is strictly superior. I am a very much enfranchised player and would even prefer functional errata to have all old cards work the new way. The "glitching" that exsisted before seems to appeal to some people - for me it's just a form of angleshooting that happens to be rules conform, and is against the intended spirit of the card. You are perfectly right in cleansing Magic from this stuff! It should about fun and strategy, not about rules-lawyering!
