My best friend was like, "It's kind of funny that Trump's son has the same name as your dog."
I very indignantly defended the honor of my dog's name and insisted it might be pronounced the same but is totally different.
Best friend: the dog's name is Baron, right? B-A-R-O-N? Pretty close.
Me: It's Beren, with two E's, like the Tolkien character. My dog was named for the coolest man in the Silmarillion.
#no i am not accepting criticism at this time#we named him when my cat mithrandir was still alive#i wanted another tolkien name and it seemed sufficiently cool for an aspirational Youth#and he's so loving (unless someone fucks with him or his food) that it ended up kind of perfect#anghraine babbles#legendarium blogging#beren the puppy#(we still call him a puppy even though he's a full grown lab/golden retriever cross)#anghraine's pets

14 questions for 14 friends
Tagged by the glorious and wonderful @anghraine—thank you, dear Elizabeth!
Tagging anyone interested, but particularly @jobean12-blog @alliluyevas @marvelgirl7 @kareenvorbarra @croclock (sorry I forget your new blog!) @jaded-scorpio @onionjulius
1- Were you named after anyone?
Yes, my great-uncle Reuben. My middle name was ostensibly for my grandfather Maurice, but I learned recently that was a fake reason and it’s really after a song.
2- What is your dream job?
Ehhhh, not sure. I’d love to be an interpreter-slash-operations manager-slash-assistant director at a historic site... But I’d also settle for being a trophy wife. :P
3- Do you have children?
Nope! I would like to have one, maybe two, if the circumstances are right.
4- What's your eye color?
Blue-green with gold flecks.
5- What's the first thing you notice about people?
General appearance? If they’re wearing anything particularly cool, if their hair is particularly cool, if they are beautiful, etc. I always like to compliment people on things that they’ve chosen that I like, which might be the color of their shirt, a pair of earrings, their sneakers, glasses, tattoos, etc. "Something they chose” is a good rule for complimenting people, I find!
6- Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Sometimes—I love sarcasm.
7- Do you prefer scary movies or happy endings?
Happy endings. I am terrible at scary/horror...
8- Do you have any special talents?
I can draw and paint (which I do digitally), I have an absurdly high processing speed (which translates to excellent typing speed, reading speed, and boggle/bananagrams scores), I write well, and I am extremely adept at napping.
9- Where were you born?
Massachusetts!
10- What are your hobbies?
Games, digital art, writing, reading, and thinking about how I should get back into dancing.
11- Do you have any pets?
THE BEST GIRL, Hero! She’s a petite black cat.
12- What sports do you play/have you played?
I was in a girls sports club as a kid, which involved playing a variety of different sports without focusing on any in particular. I also did dance, gymnastics, and swimming (and was consistently the worst at gymnastics and swimming lol). At 18, I got into swing dancing, which I was very good at, until I stopped in March 2020. I have yet to get back to it :S
13- How tall are you?
5'4".
14- Favorite subject in school?
History! (Obligatory response for a history grad student lol) (I do love reading and English, but I am not very good at literary analysis.)

14 questions
Woah, I've been tagged in a lot of question memes lately, which is so cool! And I'm insomniac with jet lag so might as well try doing at least one of them! thanks very much, @anghraine for the tag!
1- Were you named after anyone?
Nope- first child, parents weren't sure what they were doing when it came to names, mine came out of a baby names book. It turned out well though!
2- What is your dream job?
What I'm doing right now. I'm extremely lucky. I would love to be a little better paid for doing it, but I can't complain.
3- Do you have children?
No. I would love to someday, as much as the prospect also terrifies me.
4- What's your eye color?
I don't share personal information publicly on the internet any more, but I am extremely curious now what color people might imagine my eyes to be!
5- What's the first thing you notice about people?
I avoid looking at people thanks to the autisms, so, their voice, I think.
6- Do you use sarcasm a lot?
Very rarely, but I am trying to learn it! Not having it in my toolkit has always put me at a little bit of a disadvantage in my family.
7- Do you prefer scary movies or happy endings?
I don't really enjoy most horror movies, and I do like a good happy ending, but I like being scared when reading a book, and my favorite is happy endings that come after a lot of sadness and struggle.

I can draw and paint? And I am very good at Boggle and Set.

TOP 10 FAVORITE SUPERHEROES
THANKS FOR TAGGING ME: @superkingofpriderock
01. OGON BATTO (ALSO KNOWN AS: OGON BAT, GOLDEN BAT, FANTASMAGÓRICO, FANTOMAS AND FANTAMAN)
Originated in the medium of kamishibai (japanese street paper theater) in 1931, and later having expanded to the mediums of three live actions movies and one anime series in the 50s and 60s, Ogon Batto is a supersheroe created by Suzuki Ishiro and Takeo Nagamatsu. A being from ancient Atlantis who was sent forward in time 10,000 years to battle evil forces threatening the present day, he lives in a fortress in the Japanese Alps. His superpowers include superhuman strength, invulnerability, and the ability to fly, and his weak spot is dehidration. Ogon Batto has an evil counterpart known as Kurayami Bat (暗闇バット "Dark Bat") and his main enemy is Dr. Erich Nazō (ナゾー), the leader of a crime syndicate bent on world domination, who wears a black costume and mask with bat-like ears, a red eye and a blue eye. To some of the brazilian audiences, he is kown with the name Fantomas, trough the 1960s dubbed anime series.
02. THE WONDER TWINS
Characters created for the cartoon Super Friends by the creative team of Hannah-Barbera, the twin brothers Zan and Jayna’s dinamic worked like this: They would punch each other’s hands, fusing the rings they used, and say “Wonder Twins: Activate”! So, Zan would take the form of anything water related (vapours, ice, etc.) while Jayna would take the form of an animal. The reason they are on the list? If you say “Super Gêmeos: Ativar” (portuguese for Wonder Twins: Activate) to anyone who was a child in Brazil during the late 1990 and early 2000s, we will know what are you talking about, and sweet childhood nostalgia will manifest.
03. EL CHAPULIN COLORADO
Remember the mexican actor dressed up as a bee in The Simpsons? Yup, he is a parody of this little fella. Writen and acted by the comedian Roberto Gómez Bolaños in the 1970s to be a superheroe that represented the latin american audiences, El Chapulin Colorado is a guy who, despite being very bumbling and frightfull, always appear offering the services of his shrinking pills, his vinyll little antennas, his bionical hammer, a book containing a story that he feels has a relevant moral and his friendship to anyone who is in need and says the phrase: “Oh! Quién Podrá Defenderme” (Oh! Who Can Defend Me).
04. STATIC SHOCK
Virgil Hawkins is a fourteen-year-old honors student at Dakota Union High School who gains his powers by a mutagenic gas explosion, dubbed "the Big Bang" by the media, which grants numerous residents of Dakota superpowers; those affected are likewise dubbed "Bang Babies". Virgil lives with his widowed father Robert Hawkins, a social worker and the head of the Freeman Community Center, and his sister Sharon Hawkins, a university student and hospital volunteer. His mother Jean Hawkins died a few years prior, the victim of a stray bullet while she worked as a paramedic during a riot; her death causes Virgil to develop an intense fear/hatred of guns. This guy deserves his movie, Hollywood!
05. ASTÉRIX AND OBÉLIX
Created by the team of french comic artists René Goscinny and Alberto Uderzo, Astérix and Obélix are the two greatest warriors from a undomitable village of celtic gauls, who resist the invasion of the romans led by Julius Caesar with the help of a powerfull magic potion made by the druid Getafix. Astérix is the little man, whose greatest strenght is on his inteligence, cunning and witty. Obélix is the big man, gentle and innocent, who wants nothing in life but to eat delicious wild boars, find the love of a good lady and punch some romans in the face. The dwo has been around not only in comics, but also in animated and live action movies, and show no sign of slowing down and stopping to have adventures. They even have their own theme park in Paris!
06. JUSPION (ALSO KNOWN AS JASPION)
Kyojuu Tokusou Juspion ("Megabeast Investigator Juspion") is the fourth in the Metal Heroes series of Tokusatsu shows. The series revolves around space orphan Juspion and his eccentric android assistant Anri, who are sent by old wizard/scientist Ejin to destroy Satangorth and his army of Megabeasts (kyojuu), as prophesied in The Galaxy Bible. He has a giant robot at his disposal and is followed around by Team Pet Miya. While it was a success in it’s native Japan, when it was broadcast here in Brazil in the 1980s, it got extremely popular, being a mark in the surgence of geeks for japanese pop culture in the country.
07. JIRAIYA
Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya ("World Ninja War Jiraiya"), also known as Ninja Olympiad, is the seventh Metal Heroes series. Jiraiya (real name:Tōha Yamaji) is an elite ninja warrior from the Togakure style of Ninpō. His mentor and foster father Tetsuzan Yamaji, the 34th Grandmaster of the Togakure School, has trained him for the day the ancient Yōma Clan will return. Sure enough, the clan, led by Oninin Dokusai, arise with their army of evildoers in order to seize Pako, a mysterious treasure which came from outer space over 2000 years ago which is said to have power equiparable to the Sun. With the help of his family, and an army of international ninja heroes, Jiraiya must stand tall against the evil ones. If Juspion started the phenomenon of interest in japanese Tokusatsu heroes on brazilian audiences, Jiraiya consolidated it. To the point that “Virado no Jiraiya” (Turned into Jiraiya) has become a popular brazilian, meaning that someone is mad at something. The fact that his actor Takumi Tsutsui constantly comes to visit Brazil also helps a lot in the popularity of the character.
08. THE CHANGEMAN
Dengeki Sentai Changeman (Blitzkrieg Squadron Changeman) is the ninth Super Sentai series, running from 1985 to 1986. In order to save the world from threat of invasion by the Great Star League Gozma, a special force called the Earth Defense Force is set up. One day, the Gozma launch an attack on them and have them on the ropes. That is, until the Earth itself grants five officers the power of the Earth Force, which lets them become the Changemen. Before the Power Rangers came to dominate the world’s pop culture, there four five Super Sentai that received a brazilian-portuguese dub and broadcast: Changeman, Flashman, Google-V and Maskman. Changeman was the first, and is my number one favorite.
09. THE BLACK PANTHER
Guys, is The Black Panther. Do i need to say more? Ok, i will a little something: If you didn’t watched this film, go do it. Righ now!
Wakanda Forever, king T’Challa.
10. ZORRO
Really, that mark says everything. Is freaking Zorro! He is one of the reasons the superheroe genre is what it is and is what we know. Without him, probably a lot of those guys wouldn’t have existed.
I TAG: @lioness--hart @ardenrosegarden @princesssarisa @mademoiselle-princesse @detective-jasminesa @johnnyclash87 @visibilityofcolor @diversetolkien @anghraine @lady-sci-fi @butterflyslinky @margflower @amalthea9

Another questionnaire meme
I was tagged to answer this by @musinshadw
I wanna tag @lucreziaborgia @petitedilly (French is fine if it means more likely you will answer) @anghraine @markedasinfernal @starspray @pageleaf @kanafinwhy -- ten is too hard and I am spending too much time looking for people! Everyone pile on if you want to answer.
First name: Janet Nicknames: Oshun (fannish pen name) Jenny when I was little, Mac in high school Zodiac: Aires Sexual orientation: het Favorite fruit: bananas or strawberries or blueberries depending upon quality Favorite season: Autumn Favorite books: too many - lifelong--Jane Austen, Lord of the Rings, Silmarillion, I, Claudius, The Iliad, One Hundred Years of Solitude, Moby Dick, The Scarlet Letter, Mary Renault’s books, The Golden Notebook, The Idiot, War and Peace, etc., etc. Current favs (last few years) -- Ellen Kushner’s Swordspoint books, Katherine Addison’s The Gobin Emperor, Megan Whalin Turner’s Queen’s Thief series, Sharon Kay Penman’s The Sun in Splendour, Hillary Mantel’s Wolf Hall series, etc., etc. Favorite flowers: those rambling roses that spread all over a trellis and explode into a fully-blown state really fast--don’t know what they are called. We had a huge uncontrolled bunch covering a big trellis outside of our kitchen door in the house where I grew up. Favorite animal: Horses. Coffee/tea/coca: coffee is my addiction Cat or dog person: meh--not that kind of pet person, I raised children instead and they absorbed all of my energy and affection Favorite tumblr: this is impossible--I like a lot of different blogs for totally unrelated reasons--friendship, fandoms, fandom archives, history, special interests, art, travel photography, general aesthetics, even institutions like museums or associations Dream trip: I’ve blown off a few that I missed and are no longer possible for me like a boat trip down the Amazon or a trek the length of the Silk Road! How about a summer in Tuscany or a boat trip down the Rhine (trying to think of places I have not been, not the known comfort spots I love). Number of followers: it fluctuates just below 600. That seems like a glass ceiling for me--I obsessively prune porn-blog bots and the like--so there is NO padding.

#haha i love the long suffering look #also that it's clearly 'this conversation is over' but he does it the same way you do with humans #i.e. changing the subject and not just ordering him to shut up or w/e #when he does give him orders it seems to be as acting officer - he treats him like a /subordinate/ at times but not really a droid #like the 'he means well' is how you apologize for your asshole bff or snarky nephew not like... a pet or servant #we've had affectionate droid-human relationships but i don't think anything on this level (via anghraine)

WRT running a new GW2 character to 80 using only the weapon+basic racial skills for a fun challenge mode—
As a human, you're quite religious, and the racial skills are prayers to the human gods answered through a brief manifestation of the god you pray to and an effect related to their theme. Meanwhile, the Charr were once oppressed by theocratic rule under false gods (itself a response to being unable to really contend with the human gods) and these days, are mostly anti-human and very anti-religion.
I generally don't go out of my way to help the Charr out due to [redacted rant about assorted war crimes], but I was trying to get Fields of Ruin events and fighting Renegades with a gang of Charr NPCs, and there is something extremely comedic about doing it via prayers to the human gods.
We'd get immobilized and every time, my character (Gwen) is like "holy Kormir, free me from my bonds" and *bing* Kormir manifests above her head and zaps conditions from her while the Charr NPCs can't move and are getting shot full of holes. Even once we got through that, we were up against a tough veteran for level 40 and I just pictured Gwen like ... okay, time to call in the big guns.
Charr NPCs: past time, what the-
Gwen: ALL GLORY TO BALTHAZAR
And suddenly fiery murder hounds materialize beside her. :D
#i know this is not nearly as funny to anyone as me but still! cycling through the prayers with charr is incredible#also the fact that it's /versus/ charr is also hilarious. motleystitches replied to this post:
@anghraine I'm not denying that fara is seashore, but the Sindarin (rather than Quenya) interpretation of his name (and Boromir's) has been circulating for decades on the internet by now (fanon: second birth took a lot of Finduilas, thus last child). This is actually the first time I've seen this alternative. I think "hunter" was also once proposed. I rather like this tie-in with the sea; makes sense given the sea-longing/dreams/blood running true.
I'm aware of how common the 'sufficient' interpretation is (it's been a pet peeve of mine for a very long time) and, as I said in my other reply, IMO is so widespread because of Denethor bashing/Faramir woobifying despite a tenuous textual basis, not actual likelihood.
In any case:
Faramir's most immediate namesake is Prince Faramir of the House of Anárion, son of King Ondoher, a member of a royal family that exclusively used Quenya names with zero exceptions (and in Gondor, only royal descendants were permitted to use Quenya names at all, so the distinction is significant). This makes it unlikely that our Faramir's name should be interpreted via Sindarin rather than Quenya, and extremely unlikely that his name is some sort of stealth insult, given that it is royal and extremely prestigious.
Sindarin far- is simply the Sindarin cognate to Quenya fárë, and basically repeats the issues with fárë. The 'hunter' etymology also comes from Sindarin (and seems still less appropriate to Faramir tbh, given his active dislike of hunting).
It actually is likely that Faramir would have been difficult for both Denethor and Finduilas to produce, and quite possibly prevented either from having other children due to the bizarreness of Númenórean reproduction (though not unusually difficult for physical reasons, which is fanon, and a rather odd one given that Finduilas lived for half a decade after Faramir's birth). In any case, I think this is unlikely to be the cause of his name.
I've argued for a long time that fára is a more probable element in the name of the royal prince and our Faramir, both textually and symbolically (most recently probably here but at least going back to 2013). But yeah, the 'sufficient' interpretation is a popular meme that, at best, people sometimes try to recuperate in a more nuanced way. Regardless, it's not canon, it's not the most probable interpretation given what information we do have, there's no actual need to recuperate it, and most of the time it's just "lmao of course Denethor would name baby Faramir sufficient" (Finduilas whomst), so I find the whole thing pretty annoying.
I also like fára because Finduilas in particular and the house of Dol Amroth in general are so strongly associated with the seashore, so in addition to the royal prestige it can honor her and her family, too. But regardless, it just seems more likely etymologically.

Yes! She loved that mouse pad (it is still my mouse pad, actually, though she doesn't fit on it any more and I eventually banned her from my desk after she grew up). Here's another:

Andromeda the cat anon: Your mouse pad very much fits with your blogging! And your cat has (obviously) very good reading taste ;) (I'm on anon bc I don't have Tumblr but like following you all the same)
Heh, I wondered if anyone would notice the mouse pad! It was a gift from another PhD student in my program whose research also touches on Austen :)
And thanks about Andromeda's reading taste, haha. She does enjoy investigating them personally, then and now:

My mother has been trying to insist that her cat (the beloved but silly and fearless creature who went missing for a couple days last month) is less spoiled than Andromeda, my/my dad’s cat.
For context, she tried to give raw bacon to her cat this morning and he refused to eat it until she cooked it and then hand fed it to him.

So, my family has a German Shepherd who is getting on in years. She used to lie down on the (carpeted) floor, but then she started curling herself up into as small a space as possible, in order to fit inside the fluffy cat bed.
We were like ... okay, she needs one her own size. So we went online and bought a nice big fluffy dog bed that she could stretch out on. The result was inevitable:
