I wonder what Ranma Saotome's Digimon evolution chain would be?
Since Digimon gender is aesthetic, it wouldn't be too hard for him to have a Partner Digimon that flip-flops their gender presentation between evolutionary stages.
Going from Angemon to Angewomon and then cutting back over to Seraphimon, for example.
But the angels are the only example I can think of off the top of my head that have two humanoid and distinctly gendered lines of the same general category of things type of Digimon. And Ranma does not fit an angelic aesthetic, absolutely not.

Digimon Adventure 02: Revenge of Diaboromon
Wow...somehow this one just completely fell off my radar, otherwise I would have watched it a long time ago lol. I seriously thought I was all caught up with pre-Tamers anime until I saw this on the 02 TV Tropes and was like "oop..." It was a good surprise though, I can never get enough of these Mamoru Hosoda style shorts! (Looks like he didn't actually work on this one though).
I watched this dubbed first to take screenshots and then subbed. It's hard to find a non-crunchy version of the subbed short. The OG Japanese was a lot stronger imo because, as usual, the dub ruined some stuff with it's jokey tone and music choices. Still decently faithful though. Full thoughts below.
Notes:
So this is like a midquel, I guess. I don't know if there's an exact place within 02 I was supposed to watch this, but I didn't feel like my immersion was wrecked or anything haha.
While the aesthetic of the short was great, I felt the story was pretty redundant and eye-roll worthy. "Oh Omegamon/Omnimon is back for some contrived reason and the OG chosen children's digimon can't defeat him like they did last time...for some contrived reason. This looks like a job for the 02 protagonists!" Whatever, it doesn't have to be deep to be fun.
The early 2000s CG looked pretty good actually. I thought it added a fun otherworldliness to the Kuramon.
Kuramon look a lot like Takodachi (Hololive fans know what's up). I wonder if there was some inspiration there on a subliminal level.
I wonder if Daisuke's character designer intended him to be from a southern part of Japan. His tan skin sticks out more in this art style.
I feel like Diaboromon got uglier somehow compared to Our War Game lol. Armagemon's design was deliciously creepy though. He looked like something out of an Alien movie. His entrance was epic and probably would have freaked me out a lot as a kid. Weirdly, they never actually said Armagemon's name so I just assumed it was Diaboromon until I googled it just now lol
Sora and Mimi were like two sides of the same coin in this. Mimi was useless, but in a delightful way. Sora was useless, but in a boring way lol. Seriously, she didn't need to come all the way home from her tennis club trip to just go "I'm here!" and then do nothing. I'm not saying there was much she could do anyway, but I get really pissed that they never gave her character a real point aside from "bland love interest" in any Digimon show/movie.
Loved Mimi's interactions with Koushiro. Their awkward "we're in the same friend group but have nothing in common" chemistry is so fun.
Yamato seemed extra cool with his rings and stoicism. I do kind of wish he and Taichi got a little more dialogue though.
Really didn't like the direction of the fights inside the internet. They were either animated too up close or too distant so I felt like I couldn't really follow what was going on half the time. Also, the choreography wasn't that inspired. The IRL fight at least had a cool Evangelion vibe going for it. The harbor was a really aesthetic setting for a final fight.
I've started shipping DaiKen for funsies (there's some really cute fanart) so it was nice seeing them together in the elevated art style hehe.
Daisuke has a Yamato phone strap! So cute and supportive
Tumblr media
It's funny how the digimon sizing suddenly changes when we're in movie-mode. Angemon and Angewomon were huge in this! I was excited to see the 02 digimon, but they mostly looked the same as they looked in the show tbh.
The Shibuya vibes, complete with Hachiko statue, were fun. Was 02 set in Tokyo? I honestly don't remember...
Seeing all those children running around at night without any worries about safety...must be nice, Japan.
When Omegamon "ran out of energy," I had the thought of like "can a jogress digimon die in the real world or would they always just de-digivolve??" I guess they'd never go that far for plot reasons anyways
Imperialdramon gets a new mode! Paladin mode, according to Google. Were these names in the credits or did they just decide things later for the TCG or something...?
We got the 02 theme inserted towards the end and even the OG show's theme as a ring tone. Really cute touch. (I was a little triggered to hear Bolero again for the millionth time though).
All in all I'm glad the 02 kids got their due in this style. Was it groundbreaking? No. Was it worth 30 minutes of my time? Absolutely!

Hikari Yagami Week 2023 - Day 4 - Sports
for @hikariyagamiweek
Hikari and Takeru had only been in the same class for months, yet there was no one else in the school she was closer to.  It wasn’t that they knew everything about each other, but they didn’t need to.
Takeru always knew when Hikari was down, and had a talent for picking the best gifts for her.  Franchises she didn’t even know he knew she liked, necklaces that instantly fit her aesthetic, sweets she’d never reject.
And in turn, she could just as easily read and adjust to his moods and attitudes.
So strong was their bond, it came as a shock, to her, to him, likely to all their observers, when Takeru nonchalantly kicked a soccer ball to her feet.
Hikari instantly retreated.
“I-I don’t play.” She said simply.
Takeru blinked.
“You don’t play?”
It was a ludicrous statement.  Hikari knew every rule of the sport.  Could be just as loud as her brother in calling out the referees when she felt they made an incorrect call.
She was also intricately linked to the soccer club.  Having assisted the team readily when she and Taichi shared the same school.   It was how she met Daisuke.  It was how she’d met Sora.  It was even how she met Koushiro.
And while she wasn’t n Sora or Taichi’s level, Hikari was still an athlete.  She could handle herself in other sports.
And yet, she didn’t play. That wasn’t a lie.
Takeru looked at her, attempting to solve her riddle. “Well, could you pass the ball back?”
Hikari glanced at the ball, then at her feet.  She felt woozy.  She reached down and scooped the ball up with her hands, throwing it to her best friend.
It was too much to ask for that to be the end of that.  Takeru had let the subject drop, but only because there were other people about.  Two days later Hikari found herself cornered, with a well-intentioned blond and a bag of soccer balls.
“Takeru, if we’re going to waste time, couldn’t we spend it destroying dark towers?” she asked.
He saw right through her on that. “we already agreed to take a break from that.  Relaxation is important as well.”
She didn’t feel very relaxed.
“I don’t play.”
“You don’t?  or maybe you won’t?  or maybe you can’t?” he set a ball down, about a yard in front of her.  “Can Hikari not kick a ball?”
She felt part of herself rise to the challenge and the rest fall.  “It’s not about can.” She said simply.
“Ohh?  Well then, if you can get this ball in the net before we have to leave, I’ll spend the extra time treating you to that ice cream place you like so much.  But you gotta kick it.  No hands.”
Of course, he knew what tempted her the most.  “Takeru… it doesn’t matter.  I don’t play.”
“I’m not asking you to play, I’m asking you to kick.  What’s the worst that can happen?”
Sirens, bright lights, doctors yelling words she couldn’t understand.  An angry mother, a tearful father, a frightened brother.
“You never know.”
Takeru sized her up.  “is the ball going to turn into a dinosaur?  Or maybe an evil robot?  I don’t recall those stopping you before.”
She twitched. “it’s different.”
“Well, maybe it can be the same?” Takeru said.  “Maybe this ball is Ladydevimon.”
Hikari brought a hand to stifle a giggle. “What?”
“it is.  It’s her head.”
“Takeru…”
“It’s her head.  She sat there taunting you, and she called Angewomon a goodie two shoes.  Are you going to let her get away with that?  Come on Hikari kick her -”
“Takeru!” Hikari said. “Why are you doing this?”
“Because you can’t go through your entire life scared to kick a ball Hikari.  You want to be a teacher when you grow up, you’ll have to help kids learn as well.”
“That’s when I’m an adult.”
“You can’t put it off forever,” Takeru said.  “Look at you, I’ve seen you do incredible things.  Things no other kid can say.  And you can’t kick a soccer ball?  Where’s the girl who was antagonizing a perfect-level she-devil.”
Hikari paused.  She looked down at the ball, and did her best to do as Taekru directed. Imagining the ball was actually that hag’s head.  She sulked up until the ball was right in front of her right foot, curled her knee, closed her eyes, and let it go.
It was not the most accurate kick in the world.  Not by far. But of the two kicks of the soccer ball she’d taken in her life, it was by far the least disastrous.
Hikari far preferred ice cream to hospital beds.

I figured since it’s been a few days since I last talked about my Twst x digimon AU, I’d do that rn!
So, here are my reasons for why I chose which digimon for which character.
Tumblr media
Starting off with Epel! Epel was one of the first lines I came up with. It started off with me remembering that Lovely Angemon existed, so I went to her page on Wikimon. Now, I don’t remember if I went to Wikimon specifically for this AU, but that’s what it ended up being. Anyway, I then clicked on Sala/Plotmon’s page bc, why not ig? And that’s when I realized that I thought that Salamon and Epel would look really good paired up together. So I decided on the line you see above.
So yes, at first it was about the aesthetic. However, when I started thinking about it, the more sense it made to me. Salamon is a really cute digimon, who doesn’t have that much control over its power which makes it seem weaker than it really is. And when you think about that along with how much Epel hates being perceived as ‘cute’ and/or ‘girly’ having that type of partner would be something he’s less than thrilled about.
Then there’s Gato/Tailmon. Gatomon is a champion level, and in the OG Adventure 1999 series, she’s introduced by beating up all of the digidestined’s champions. Now this is great, however Gatomon is still very small compared to other champions, and still very ‘cute’ looking. She could easily be mistaken for a rookie level (plus Gatomon is categorized as both Champion/Adult and Rookie/Child level, so…) now you’ve got an exceptionally powerful digimon (though one could argue that Gatomon’s strength in Adventure 1999 is bc of ✨trauma✨ but that’s neither here nor there) but is still very small and cute. Connections to Epel are fairly obvious, I feel.
Then we get to Angewomon. A very obviously Feminine digimon, and, I’ll be honest, the way I have the scene where Gatomon digivolves into Angewomon for the first time, Epel’s first thought isn’t about how feminine or pretty she is, but “wow, my partner’s so cool!” Or at least, something along those lines. Of course, I don’t know if that would how it would turn out if I actually made this into a story and not just random anecdotes about the AU, but I feel like that first thought would show off some of his character development in this AU.
Finally, with Lovely Angemon, it is mostly the same as the previous, however Epel seems to refer to himself using the word “lovely” more in the direct translation/JP than in the EN translation.
(I did have a picture of Epel referring to himself with the word “lovely” but my image was fucking up and only putting in the picture of Epel’s digimon line, so, like, look it up for yourself ig)
A final anecdote about this line is how it kinda parallels (if that’s the right word) another character in the AU. Because, you see, the Great Seven in this AU are all turned into digimon that the main cast meet throughout their journey. And the digimon I chose to represent the Fairest Queen is Lilith/Laylamon. Now if you don’t know, Lilithmon is very connected to the Gatomon line. As Lilithmon represents a sort of “dark version” to Ophanimon, one of Gatomon’s Mega levels. In Lilithmon’s Digimon reference book entry, it even states that “It is thought that it was originally the same kind of Digimon as Ophanimon, but it fell from heaven and eventually became known as the ‘Goddess of Darkness’” So while Epel’s line may end with Lovely Angemon, that doesn’t mean that there isn’t a strong connection between the two characters, which I find very fun!
Anyway, ig the tl;dr is that I choose the Sala/Gatomon line for the aesthetic, but I was actually being a genius.
(Anyway, since the pictures keep fucking up and showing the Epel Digimon Line instead, I’m just going to end it here and explain the rest later in a different post)

Considering the number of humanoid Digimon with wings, shirts, jackets and pullovers of all kinds prove a bit of a problem.
Somewhere out there is a Zyphermon who has found an outfit they really like, that fits their aesthetic, but is having real problems getting the top over their massive bird wings.
Angemon and Angewomon have a similar problem, plus the fact that they’ve worn helmets for so long they need hats to hide their lack of a fringe.
Bancho Leomon has been called a furry 5 times in the last hour, and no one has told them what that means.
Important question: since clothes/accessories tend to be just that and not part of a Digimon's body, couldn't a human-like Digimon just get a new outfit and disguise itself as a human?
In a similar vein, are we sure that Sistermon Noir isn't just some random nun with a gun.
