Ok, so the little line about Marcus being sad that Nush didn’t wear his hoodie gave me thoughts...and thots.
This would definitely be further down the line, maybe they’ve already confessed their feelings to one another but they’re taking their relationship slow, so dates mostly consist of movie nights, dinners at casual places, etc. But one movie night, they fall asleep on Marcus’ couch and he wakes the next morning to Nush coming back from getting them pastries & coffee...in his hoodie. And boy does it do something to him. He’s never felt this way about someone wearing his clothes before; it makes him possessive and all he wants to do is see her in his hoodie and nothing else.
My brain goes two ways on this: heavy make out session where Marcus let’s her know just what seeing her in his clothes does (lots of dirty talk) OR full on dom!Marcus picking her up and putting her on his kitchen counter so he can get his mouth between her legs and telling her what seeing her in his clothes does to him. I can’t decide which I thot I like more!!
These two give me so many thoughts and thots...it might be a slight problem

You think you are possessing me but I’ve got my teeth in you.
Angela Carter
What could be more coincidental than pouring rain greeting the pair of you as you leave the Prince Charles Cinema’s matinee of Singing in the Rain? The deluge that pours onto the street below invites a bloom of colourful umbrellas twisting and turning through the Soho streets- umbrellas that neither of you had thought to bring despite it being April in London. Enjoying the last few moments of relative warmth and dryness, your eyes flicker between a deep-in-thought Marcus, and the puddles outside those black rimmed glass doors that lie in wait for the pair of you.
“You are thinking very loudly, Mr Pike,” you remark shaking your head as a wave of consternation washes across his face, “Don’t you dare think about where the nearest shop is to buy an umbrella. It’s barely a ten minute walk to Charing Cross from here.”
Marcus releases a small chuckle as he shuffles his feet embarrassedly, his eyes shifting sideways, “How did you know I was thinking that?”
“At work, when you are questioning people- you’re entirely closed off which you need to be in for our profession but as soon as you go into hometime Marcus, your thoughts and emotions are painted across your face as clear as words on a page.”
A shy boyish grin creeps across his face, “Ok, I am a bit of an open book but you have the ability to read me better than anyone else,” he reluctantly owns, “I kinda wish I was a better liar and could come up with something else on the spot.”
Grabbing his hand tightly, you give it a small squeeze and a tug to let him know that he never needs to lie to you- a gesture that Marcus returns with a gentle kiss upon your forehead. “Come on you, let’s go run between the raindrops and head back South of the river before anyone notices that we came without our passports.” Your eyes sparkle wickedly at him as you raise your finger to your lips pretending to drag him into the silly North/South London divide.
“Still tickled by your version of the redneck, iced tea, Southern manners versus skyscrapers, yellow cabs and  cold winters”,” he shakes his head slightly.
“My love, there is a lot you don’t get in regards to Britishisms- you still giggle like a teenage boy whenever I mention the word knickers,” you kindly reprimand him, “You’ve not even been here two months yet, give yourself time to realise that our version of pancakes are better than yours!”
You hear a sharp gasp emanating from Marcus in mock hurt as you blaspheme over his favourite food group. Cocking your eyebrow at him, you pause for a moment as you step towards the double doors that lead into roads where the coloured lights bleed across their oily surfaces. Marcus reaches around you to open the door, “I got you. Not letting you walk into doors today.”
It seems as if the moment that the two of you step outside, the heavens truly decide to open upon you, drenching through every layer of clothing right to your bones. Running through the winding streets with your hands tightly wound together, you and Marcus dodge in and out of the sprawling crowds of tourists with their leisurely pace and humongous golf umbrellas. When you are faced with a particularly large group, you split apart with Marcus diving towards a shop but you go too close to the curb when a taxi drives through a massive puddle, sending an icy tsunami over your head.
You stand there and gasp as the water constricts every blood vessel in your body, the shock coursing through your veins. Blinking the water from your eyelashes, you become aware of two hands bringing warmth back to your cheeks and two brown orbs gazing at you, “Hey, you ok?” Marcus scans your face, worriedly checking you over as he slides his worn leather jacket over your shoulders to try to bring some warmth back into your body.
Brimming with tears of mirth, your eyes crease into tiny crescents until the smile tugging at your lips forms the biggest grin as your whole body roars with laughter, “I don’t think there’s much point in trying to run between the raindrops anymore,” you gasp out between the giggles.
When you notice that Marcus isn’t laughing, you pause to draw a deeper breath, searching his face for clues. Your heart beats faster and faster as you notice that his eyes are black holes, pulling you towards him until gravity and time cease to exist. Heat rises through the chill of your skin- from your stomach to your throat- as his lips call to yours. When the sensitive skin meets, there isn’t a moment of hesitation to drink each other in as the taste of Marcus silences all of your thoughts.
All of your kisses to this point had been the tentative kisses of a new relationship. The kisses of two broken hearts starting to mend and learning how to allow yourselves to love again.
But this. This. This was different.
Marcus withdraws his mouth slightly from you, resting his forehead against yours as his breath dances across your lips, “Wow.”
And then he’s back. Fingers tangled in your hair, lungs forgetting to breathe as without a moment’s hesitation he deepens the kiss, parting your lips and searching for the soft sweetness brought by your tongue. As the moment swiftly intensifies, your hands seek him out as the only solid thing in the swaying world around you. Your fingers seek out the warmth of his skin beneath his drenched Henley. You feel him. All of him presses against you so that you can inhale the woody scent of his aftershave, the citrus notes of his shampoo and that smell that is just so utterly Marcus.
“So beautiful,” he whispers against your now swollen lips. His words ground you, placing a solid surface beneath your feet before he sweeps you away again.
The kisses eventually slow, becoming infinitely more tender than the raw need that pulses between you both. You are breathless, dazed and needing so much more. Your body aches for more than the Soho streets can offer you, confident in the knowledge that Marcus feels the same as you feel his powerful body tremble like yours. All that exists in this moment is feeling, wanting and needing each other.
A half growl, half moan comes from the back of Marcus’ throat as he finally breaks the kiss, “I have to get you home before I take you right here.”
Heart still racing, you just about manage to form words but your lust-filled brain mangles them making you feel drunk and slurred, “Whose home?”
“Mine. S’closer,” he murmurs into your mouth, “Don’t wanna be arrested for acts of indecency. Right now, everything I wanna do to you, falls into that category.”
It takes all you can muster, hearing that admission spill from his lips. All the willpower in the world, not to just find a darkened doorway and just take him there.
His fingers find yours again, peeling your hands away from the soft skin under his t-shirt-  intertwining in undoable knots- but your bodies still press together as if you cannot bear to separate yet. You both take a moment to catch your breath, the rain still falling upon you in some heavenly benediction- mouths twitching into grins as your breathing relaxes and slows to a pace that allows for thoughts to re-enter your mind.
Marcus is the one to break the bodily contact, turning to one side, dropping one of your hands to start walking towards the station. You catch a slightly confused look on his face, “Not sure where the station is, are you? Come on, I’ll let you take the lead when you know where you are a bit better,” you snigger with a saucy wink in his direction.
As you go to walk away from him, he pulls you in closer and rumbles deeply in your ear, “You know I don’t have a problem with you taking the lead.”
The tone of his voice echoes through your skin, setting fireworks off through every synapse in your body and oh how it gladdens you to realise that he needs you as much as you want him.
✪✪✪✪✪
The journey home has been one of not daring to look at or touch each other too much. Sitting next to him on the train, your thighs leaning into each other, you both desperately try to focus on messing around with your phones. Him showing you various forthcoming art exhibitions in town and you showing him silly TikToks sent by your nieces and nephews of dogs being dubbed with computerised voices, giving their thoughts on cats and other dog breeds. Anything to take your minds off what you’d actually like to do with each other.
As the train pulls into the station, you pull him up from his seat and head towards the exit. Tapping out at the ticket barrier, you turn towards Marcus, going up on tiptoes to place a small chaste kiss upon his lips, “I’m popping to Sainsburys to grab some wine as I think we finished that bottle on Wednesday, didn’t we? Do you need anything else while I’m there?”
“Sweetheart, I can’t let you do that,” Marcus tries pleading with you.
“I cannot get any wetter than I am at this moment in time,” you implore before pausing as Marcus raises his eyebrows at you, licking his lower lip, stepping closer to close the minutismal space between yourselves.
“Quit  making me stand in the rain, thinking impure thoughts,” he groans.
You push the heel of your hand into his chest, “Then go upstairs, run me a bath and find something dry for me to put on, then you can have your wicked way with me.”
Putting his hands on your hips and dipping his head to playfully nip at your neck, Marcus gives in as his lips mutter into your skin, “Ok, be quick. I’ll order some pizza and ice cream ready for you getting out of the bath.”
Your eyes roll back in your head and you release a satisfied groan at the thought of a warm bath and pizza. Especially that beauty of a bath in Marcus’ apartment where you can actually stretch out and entirely submerge yourself beneath the hot soapy water. You remove Marcus’s hands from your sides and turn towards the small store with its bright fluorescent lights blaring out at you through the plate glass storefront. As you go to step inside, you turn your head and see that Marcus has turned at the same time with that look in his eyes again. With a small wave and a grin, you step inside to find snacks and wine, not entirely sure that they would be necessary this evening.
✪✪✪✪✪
Bottles clink and packets of Haribo rustle from within your bags as you walk up to Marcus’ front door. You give the bottom section of wood a small thud from your boot, to which it opens with a significantly dryer Marcus, who takes the bags from you before ushering you in. As the warmth of his flat encircles you, you release a breath you hadn’t realised you’d been holding.
“Strip,” his firm, familiar baritone commands, holding an arm out for your soaking clothes, “Your bath is run and I’ve left you some clothes on my bed. You’d left a pair of panties from the last time you stayed over- I’ve washed those so they’re in the pile too.”
Peeling back the layers of clothing that had been so utterly useless against the torrential rain and draping them over Marcus’ arms- tiny droplets dripping onto his hardwood flooring, you soon stand there completely naked. Tossing your clothes in the general direction of his washing machine, he gently guides you with his warm hand placed in the small of your back towards the bath, which true to his word, is full, bubbly and welcoming.
As you step in, you look over towards Marcus inviting him in with your eyes.
With a small shake of his head, Marcus turns to leave you to soak. The quietude envelops you, so much that you are barely able to hear Marcus padding softly around outside this sanctuary. You lie back allowing the water to cover your ears- a complete sensory deprivation when your eyes draw shut too. Images that swirl with the heavenly taste and scent of Marcus, his velvet touch and the sound of his voice dance behind your closed lids as you allow the water to wash away London pollution and puddle water.
✪✪✪✪✪
Having reheated your body enough, the bath water turning tepid, you clamber out onto the deliciously soft bath mat that you know Andy picked out prior to Marcus’ arrival. Wrapping one of the towels Marcus has left out for you around your body and the other around your hair, you walk into his impeccably neat bedroom. Bed made, clothes ironed, folded and put away- the polar opposite of yours. Even the pile of clothes with your knickers on top, is neat.
The morning after the night when Marcus had first stayed over at yours and needed an iron for his shirt, you’d barely been able to locate in your memory where you’d last seen it- pointing him in the direction of the cupboard of doom- the place where half-baked ideas and good intentions go to die.. Everything is generally haphazard and a little topsy-turvy about you but Marcus, his sense of order calms your busy brain and you are noticing it rub off on you.
You hang your coat up on the hooks that you’d drilled in when you’d first bought your flat but never used until a month ago. You only now have one hanging chair, rather than utilising every surface available. You also attempt to only buy one bagged salad each week instead of pretending that you will eat more greens but then them definitely losing that green tone, fading into a brown slush before you remember their existence in that pathetic salad drawer.
Pulling up your knickers and sitting, no- sinking into the glorious mattress of Marcus’ bed, you haul the t-shirt over your head and shrug your arms into the sleeves of the hoodie before zipping it up at the front. You smile at a flicker of a memory where Jasper had moaned at you for stretching out his hoodies with your woman boobs. You also find it very sweet that Marcus honestly thinks that his shorts will fit over your thighs and hips so you leave them on the bed, choosing to leave the room in just the hoodie, t-shirt and underwear- albeit just on your bottom half as your bra was utterly soaked too and was probably going through his washing machine. That poor underwire! Nevermind, perhaps it’s time for something a little less utilitarian and a little more sexy.
Softly padding out from his bedroom, you spy Marcus’ broad back twisting in the kitchen as he seeks out plates and glasses in the cupboards. Pizza boxes lie on the side, their contents sweating condensation on the table below.
“I’m finally decent,” you declare with a flourish as you bounce into the kitchen, almost bounding directly into his chest.
Marcus spins at the sound of your voice, making sure to catch and steady you after your clumsy entrance, “No. You are very wrong there,” his breath hitching as he rumbles deeply into the shell of your ear, “No way. You could never be classified as decent, not looking like this.”
Another step and a slight twist of your body, and Marcus has your hips pinned against the cupboard. He places his hands either side of you, trapping you between the carpentry and the solid wall of him, his dark eyes flashing with lust as you feel him memorising every detail of you.
“Talk to me, Marcus,” you ask of him, running your fingers through his dark curls, “Tell me what’s going on.”
“You sure you wanna know?” he questions, stroking his fingers down the side of you, the sensation causing you to twitch under its tenderness.
“I want you to tell me everything,” you demand unblinkingly. Desperate for Marcus to finally tell you what he wants rather than constantly looking to please and pleasure you.
“Ok,” You see Marcus nod, his bottom lip slightly trembling, “It takes a superhuman feat of strength not to call you into my office everyday and fucking rail you right there into my desk, in front of everyone.”
Holy fuck, Marcus. Let it go.
“Monday, when we were working late and you grabbed my jacket to throw over your shoulders? Seeing how the shoulders swamped yours, there was... There was just this moment when I wanted to run my hands up that skirt, rip your panties off, slide into you and bite your neck, leaving marks for everyone to know you’re mine. I just wanted to possess every part of you and all because of you wearing something that’s mine.
“When we’re walking around galleries or sitting in cinemas together, it is all I can do to not find a cupboard to push you into or take advantage of the lowlights.I just want you to be mine all the time. I want to be surrounded by your scent- your hair, your perfume and your cunt -  they’re this drug that I can’t get enough of. When you wear my clothes, they smell of you - makes me want to possess every part of you. I need all of you to belong to me.”
Your heart thuds in your chest as you allow Marcus’ primal growl to fill you with a searing heat that burns through the very depths of you.
“And now. Right now? Seeing you now in my hoodie and just your panties is so fucking tempting- so don’t you dare give me that comment that you are decent now.”
His hands finally move from their position on the counter to your hips as he lifts you, your legs wrapping around his waist unconsciously. The pizza unceremoniously gets dumped onto the floor as he settles you onto the cool work surface, pulling your hips slightly towards him. Unlocking your calves from around his waist, he pushes your thighs a little further apart, thumbs brushing upon the sensitive skin as he lowers his face so that you can feel his hot breath through the material of your knickers.
He withdraws slightly, pressing his lips in sweet kisses along the inside of your thighs whilst his teeth graze and nip at you, setting off a string of fireworks in your skin.
“Right now, I want to inhale you. I need to have your scent filling my lungs.”
His nose nuzzles into your lightly clothed slit searching out your sweet heady scent, brushing the damp material back and forth over your sensitive clit making it throb in anticipation. The sensations brought from his nose causes your core to pool around him, the small nudges sending your pulse racing through the roof.
Very few thoughts are able to exist in your mind other than the way you desperately want to wrap your legs back around him- this time around his head to lock him in place and keep his face glued to your pussy, stopping him from continuing this tantalising teasing.
“Now? Now, I want to taste you. I want drink that sweet fucking nectar from right here.”
Dipping his head lower, he licks teasingly at the aperture of your cunt, stiffening his tongue slightly to press the material between your folds. Your breath catches in your throat wanting to scream at his slow pace. You hook your thumbs into the elastic of your knickers at your hips, trying to awkwardly shuffle them off.
Abruptly, he stops. Pulling away from you, moving your hands away from trying to remove your underwear, “No,” he growls, “Leave them on.”
“Do you wanna know why I didn’t sneak those panties back to you at work or any of the other nights I’ve seen you this week?” He raises an eyebrow at you from his crouched position between your legs as you nod helplessly, your heart pounding in your throat, “I’ve been smelling them, thinking of your hot cunt as I rub my cock in the few moments we’re apart.”
Leaning forward, fingers sinking into the soft flesh of your bottom and kissing you hard through your knickers, he exclaims joyously, “Ah, honey, I fucking love your smell and taste! Sometimes, I can still smell your juices on my fingers at work and it makes my cock fucking throb, knowing that you are only two steps away from me. Professionalism with you so close is impossible.”
Your pussy throbs and yearns for a consistent touch as he returns his face to between your legs. Resting his forehead against your pubic bone, he returns to burying his nose into the dampest point of the thin fabric. This time, as he drags it upwards, he pulls his tongue stiffly upwards until he reaches that sensitive nub of nerves, catching it between his teeth gently tugging it.
You swear that every nerve in your body is on fire and nothing exists except you and Marcus. No one has made your body sing like this in its neediness. The rush of wild sensations sweeping across your body are equally thrilling and maddening you.
Teasing the material to one side of your pussy lips, you watch a smile unfold across Marcus’ face as he gazes upon you.
Never have you felt so wanted before.
Then with the same joyous abandon he has shown in kissing your pussy, he throws your thighs over his shoulders before sinking his mouth onto the sweet, bare flesh. The way that his tongue flickers so gracefully across your clit leaves you gasping. That familiar knot of pleasure building deep inside your tummy as he edges ever lower, preparing to tongue fuck you. Licking deeper and deeper into your cunt, you can hear the pleasure spilling from within you onto his tongue and oh how he drinks like a man dying of thirst.
You cry out in surprise as Marcus encircles his lips around your clit, sucking rhythmically and gently. The scruff of his beard tickling pleasingly the sensitive flesh as he works you towards your release. A guttural groan against your delicate skin is the point that sends you truly spinning over the precipice into pleasure, howling his name into the night air as your thighs tightly clasp him around his ears, his tongue still working you through that blissful high until your body drops every ounce of tension, relaxing into the afterglow.
When he moves back into softly kissing your thighs, you tug his glistening face towards you with barely a moment of hesitation passing between the two of you. Your lips meet again with the tenderness of an artist’s brushstrokes, Marcus painting the taste of you into your mouth with exquisitely delicious kisses.
He brings his forehead back to rest against yours again, with a total calmness drifting across his features. You shut your eyes and rest with him, safe. From his lust drenched words to the experienced motions of his tongue, you utterly resign yourself to the truth.
You have always belonged with Marcus.
 You always will.

art and ethical cause about highlighting the Celebration of Home
Proposal:
Basically it came from speaking with people classed themselves as homeless, firstly a friend who became without a fixed abode some years before I knew him and he introduced me to his friend who had been with no fixed abode and street sleeper we both related to each other about a mental health issue, he told me he had been offered help yet turned it away. He had been very incoherent in his mental state and he told me that people would go to the toilet on him and kick him so he lost teeth due to drunk people kicking his teeth out. He has no clue who his family are, he has no identity and was ‘lost in society’ it broke my heart. I met a man called Peter one winter night sitting by Sainsbury’s bins he had been down on his luck after taking retirement from the forces, he became bankrupt and with nowhere to live he was abandoned by his family.... and in relation to my former housemate she was very ill and was very unsociable and made life very very difficult for me and it seemed no matter how I helped her, I was not welcome in the home launching a massive hate campaign against me.... sadly she is now living in a van after abandoning a career in teaching, so no fixed abode too.
How the insecurity of having a place to live, affected me personally before sharing a home with that friend; was when I was threatened with eviction from the marital home my husband who decided he did not want me there and I had to find somewhere to live ASAP, thankfully I had support from senior council housing officers after complaining about being told by an employee from Ipswich Borough Council to live in someone’s outdoor shed!!!! Then one day I managed to brave it to the shop to buy food to restock and to buy a sandwich to eat on the waterfront on a lovely evening I was enjoying my food before returning home the sun was setting I was wearing my designer jacket and was feeling good in that moment of fresh air and people. A group of people all dressed for a night out walked by, a man in the group smiled at me and his friend said “Don’t look at her or she will ask you for money”....... “how bizarre” I thought but that is the state of times, so many people are vilified or verbally insulted regularly or pitied, this experience demonstrated that anyone could experience that and the first thing we need to do is change attitudes. BIG TIME POSITIVELY.
My theory is to Celebrate Home, in the best way to appreciate home and everything we have that is often taken for granted and highlight that EVERYONE DESERVES TO LIVE IN A NICE GOOD PLACE TO CALL HOME!
Hope you get the vibe I am hoping for and encouraging. And I’d be very consciously promoting local charities helping those people with no fixed abode.
Let me know what you think,
Best of wishes,
Angela

Retailers and delivery companies recruit for Christmas as online shopping grows – and staff shortages are feared
Tumblr media
Even more people than usual are likely to be buying online this Christmas. Image: Fotolia
Retailers and delivery companies are starting their Christmas recruitment campaigns, against a background of staff shortages and rising levels of online shopping.
Ecommerce has grown fast over the 18 months of the Covid-19 pandemic, requiring grocers and others to expand their online capacity. Now that growth is feeding into higher demand for jobs in multichannel fulfilment, such as click and collect staff and delivery drivers. Retailers are offering perks from free food and drink to bonus payments in order to ensure their hiring campaigns succeed at a time when post-Brexit shortages have been felt in areas from lorry driving to vegetable picking and butchery.
Royal Mail said today that it is looking for about 20,000 seasonal staff to sort the Christmas post – at a time when more online parcels are being sent. Temporary roles – mostly in mail centres – will be available from late October and until early January. Some 17,150 people will be needed to work to work in mail centres in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Another 1,500 will be needed at Parcelforce and the same number at the international parcel hub at Heathrow, and there are 650 data inputting roles at three UK sites.
Zareena Brown, Royal Mail chief people officer, says: “Our seasonal workforce is incredibly important to our operation and we very much look forward to welcoming those who return year after year as well as those who may be joining us for the first time. Being part of delivering Christmas is a brilliant experience and one that we know offers lots of opportunities for employment and engagement in the communities we serve.”
Tesco today says it plans to hire 30,000 temporary staff to help customers in its superstores and extra stores, where this year roles include picking for online deliveries as well as filling shelves. Half of those roles have already been filled by people who joined during the pandemic and have now extended their contracts to cover Christmas.
Angela Woolfenden, Tesco head of UK resourcing, says: “We need another 15,000 colleagues to join the 15,000 additional colleagues who are already with us for the festive season, to help give our customers a Christmas to remember. We’re looking for people who enjoy working as part of a team and are prepared to go that extra mile in order to help our customers.
“Our festive roles are a great way to become part of the Tesco team, from checkouts to picking orders for home delivery or replenishing the store. It’s an opportunity to meet great people, learn new skills and be part of a diverse team where everyone is welcome.”
The retailer is also looking for 3,000 permanent members of staff to join its warehouse distribution teams, with a £500 bonus for those that join by October 30, and a £250 bonus for those that join after but before November 27.
Aldi is looking for more than 1,500 people to work in its UK stores for what it expects to be its biggest ever Christmas. Roles include picking and packing click and collect order, as well as checkout staff. At the same time, it is recruiting for its 11 regional distribution centres in the UK for permanent jobs including warehouse selectors, logistics assistants and lorry drivers.
Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: “We always need extra support over the busy Christmas period but this year especially, temporary store colleagues will play a vital role in keeping our shelves stocked as the nation prepares to reunite with their loved ones after missing out on festive celebrations in 2020.
“At the same time, we also want to recognise and thank our amazing colleagues who have been going above and beyond to serve local communities over the past year. This is why we will once again be keeping our stores closed on Boxing Day, and it’s been really encouraging to see other retailers committing to do the same this year.”
And earlier this week Sainsbury’s launched what it says is its biggest ever Christmas recruitment drive. The company aims to hire 22,000 people for seasonal jobs, from serving customers and stocking shelves to picking, packing and delivering online orders. Jobs are already available, and temporary staff will be able to work until January 8, and extra hours are also available to existing staff.
Clo Moriarty, Sainsbury’s retail and digital director, says: “We’re going all out to help our customers celebrate and make sure they have a great Christmas this year. By recruiting 22,000 temporary Sainsbury’s and Argos colleagues on an attractive pay package, incentivising Online drivers and offering additional hours to existing colleagues over the festive season, we will deliver what our customers want - great food and fantastic service. Christmas is a fun time to work in retail for anyone who enjoys helping customers and thrives on working in an inclusive team environment. If that’s what motivates you, we’re ready to welcome you to Sainsbury’s.”
Jobs are also being advertised at John Lewis Partnership for a quick start. The retailer is looking for 7,000 temporary staff as well as more than 550 permanent full-time staff. Roles include supermarket assistants and drivers for online grocery deliveries at Waitrose, and sales and merchandising jobs in John Lewis department stores. The retailer, which launched its recruitment campaign last month, is offering free food and drinks to both staff and temporary workers in order to attract the help it needs.
Nikki Humphrey, people director at the John Lewis Partnership, says: “We know that as the first Christmas after lockdown, customers will want to make it really special and we’re throwing everything we can into helping them celebrate - our festive team will have a crucial role to play. We’re looking for people who can deliver extraordinary service to help customers get what they need to celebrate. We look forward to welcoming people into our team across the country.”
The retailer will enable higher than usual levels of online demand in the run up to Black Friday through its new 300k sq ft distribution centre at Bardon, Leicestershire.

flowers in song titles...
The Rolling Stones are no strangers to the subject matter of flowers. Not only did they name a 1967 U.S. compilation Flowers and record a song named "Dandelion," Keith Richards even named his daughter Dandelion (although she goes by Angela now). "Dead Flowers" was one of the Stones’ many forays into country music, with singer Mick Jagger playing flowers by post next it for laughs by adding a pronounced twang to his voice. The song is less about flowers than it is about drugs (as if the line “I’ll be in my basement room with a needle and a spoon” didn’t make that clear). The title could be taken as a reference to heroin, because the drug is derived from the poppy. Back in the ’70s, Keef would never refuse a package of “dead flowers,” although sending them by mail might not have been the wisest choice flowers sainsburys
As the unassuming introduction to the stripped-back Wildflowers record, the title track sets the stage for what is to come on Tom Petty’s best album. This is music that still lets the sunlight in – maybe too much, so that it rustles with a faded, lived-in glory. The kick-off song embodies the album’s melancholy spirit, as Tom wishes his subject freedom “among the wildflowers” and later says she/he belongs “close to me.” It’s a love song, sure, but is it a romantic love song? Could be. Or maybe it’s a father’s benediction to his grown-up child, sending his kid out into the wild and hoping for the best.
The seven-minute epic that closes Thin Lizzy’s Black Rose: A Rock Legend album is Phil Lynott’s supreme tribute to his homeland of Ireland. Lynott, with the help of guitar master Gary Moore, flowers tesco weaves traditional folk songs such as "Danny Boy" and "Shenandoah" in between his own lyrics about the spirit of his country. Lynott namechecks the Irish political song "Roisin Dubh," in which a black rose represents bloodied but unbowed Ireland, as well as Irish cultural heroes from James Joyce to Van Morrison. The sweeping grandeur is made all the more electric by a titanic solo from Moore. Talk about coming up roses…
Crowning the Top 10 Flower Songs is this sunshine daydream of a ditty, written by guitarist/vocalist Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead’s legendary “non-performing member,” lyricist Robert Hunter. The "Sugar Magnolia" in the tune supposedly refers to Weir’s live-in girlfriend at the time. In addition to frequent mentions of the title flower, the tune is otherwise a bit plant life-obsessed, with mentions of blossoms, roses, willows and rushes flowers by post next As sweet as the flower it references, ‘Sugar Magnolia’ was the second-most-often played song during the Dead’s concert career. The term “sunshine daydream,” used in the coda section, also became the title to a 1972 Grateful Dead concert film.

REVIEW
The Unbroken by Alex Caan
A Khan & Heaton Crime Thriller #1
A wedding rushed into
An unhappy couple beginning their honeymoon
Kidnapped
One missing and one dead
Police called in
Will they find the missing before he is dead?
Who is the mastermind behind the crime
and
Why did it happen as it did?
This was a complex complicated character driven twisted terrible tale in which every person seemed to have a secret, past horrible experiences, ulterior motives or just not be 100% normal...but then...what is truly normal?
From the beginning of the story to the end I kept wondering how the author came up with the plot and the characters. I felt horrible for more than one person in the story and especially so for Millie who paid with her life. The team set to solve Millie’s murder were an unusual duo of women that were similar and yet very different. Their partnership at work proved to be excellent as both were skilled in doing their jobs but they also were scarred in ways that created a dependency between them outside of their job that was intriguing and made more and more sense as their pasts were revealed.
There was so much to contemplate in this story...so very much. My mind is struggling to put into words what to say about this book. Hmm…
What I liked: * It was not a simple tale and made me think
* Learning more about what made each character tick
* Finding out who was behind the tragic events and why what happened did
* That the perpetrator did not achieve all that was planned
* That this was deeper and darker than I thought it might be
* Learning about Sarah and Moomy but not learning everything – there is more I want to know about both of them
* The police procedural aspects of the story
* How twisted it was – and how dark – but also how karma might eventually get the baddie
* Knowing this is not a one and done story
What I did not like:
* The loss of an innocent life
* The darker hidden sides of some of the characters
* Some of the past experiences of more than one character
* The fact that there are so many dysfunctional families in the world
* The reminder of how evil people can be.
Did I enjoy this book? Yes
Would I read more in this series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley, Hera and BOTBS Publicity for the ARC – This is my honest review.
4.5 Stars

BLURB
Millie didn’t get time to think. The car door was pulled open and she was dragged out, her screams loud and raw, as she kicked and fought. She called out for Oscar, again and again, screaming for help.
But he never came.
It was the wedding of the year. Millie Beaumont marrying billionaire playboy Oscar Hayat, the eyes of the world watching.
But the dream turns into a nightmare when Millie and Oscar are brutally abducted while on honeymoon. Millie is killed, her body dumped in London. Oscar is still missing…
Enter DS Moomy Khan and DI Sarah Heaton – not your typical police officers. Moomy is running from her own troubled past, while Sarah is having to live with the hard choices she has made. Yet they will stop at nothing to find Millie’s murderers and track down Oscar. Only a family as high profile as the Hayats have enemies lurking in every corner – have they taken the ultimate revenge, or is someone else behind the death and kidnapping?
And can Moomy and Sarah find Oscar – before time runs out and he suffers the same fate as his wife?
The first book in the gripping, fast-paced new Khan and Heaton crime series, The Unbroken will thrill fans of A.A. Dhand, Angela Marsons and Robert Bryndza.

Plastics research
https://4ocean.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqZfAysf-3wIVbpPtCh1WdwcxEAAYAiAAEgLqW_D_BwE
An estimated 16 billion pounds of plastic enter the ocean each year
Tumblr media
https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2018/06/plastic-planet-waste-pollution-trash-crisis/
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of marine animals every year. Nearly 700 species, including endangered ones, are known to have been affected by it. Some are harmed visibly—strangled by abandoned fishing nets or discarded six-pack rings. Many more are probably harmed invisibly. Marine species of all sizes, from zooplankton to whales, now eat microplastics, the bits smaller than one-fifth of an inch across. On Hawaii’s Big Island, on a beach that seemingly should have been pristine—no paved road leads to it—I walked ankle-deep through microplastics. They crunched like Rice Krispies under my feet. After that, I could understand why some people see ocean plastic as a looming catastrophe, worth mentioning in the same breath as climate change. At a global summit in Nairobi last December, the head of the United Nations Environment Programme spoke of an “ocean Armageddon.”
Tumblr media
To ride currents, seahorses clutch drifting seagrass or other natural debris. In the polluted waters off the Indonesian island of Sumbawa, this seahorse latched onto a plastic cotton swab—“a photo I wish didn’t exist,” says photographer Justin Hofman.
Tumblr media
In Life magazine in 1955, an American family celebrates the dawn of “Throwaway Living,” thanks in part to disposable plastics. Single-use plastics have brought great convenience to people around the world, but they also make up a big part of the plastic waste that’s now choking our oceans.
DURABLE CHAINS
Plastics are polymers: Long-chain molecules made of repeating links,or monomers. The chains are strong, light, and durable, which makes them so useful—and so problematic when they’re disposed of carelessly. The polymer here is PET, a type of polyester, the stuff of bottles and clothes.
https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/press-releases/uk-top-supermarkets-flood-britain-59-billion-pieces-plastic-packaging-every-year/
Tumblr media
Drawing on detailed figures disclosed by firms for the first time, the survey of Britain’s largest supermarkets and grocery chains reveals ten major retailers are placing over 810,000 tonnes of single-use plastic on the market every year. Seven of them are putting in circulation the equivalent of some 59 billion pieces of plastic packaging – over 2,000 items for every household in the country. Despite their huge plastic footprint, half of the supermarkets surveyed have no specific targets to reduce plastic packaging and most of those who do are moving at such a slow pace (just 5% per year) that it would take them 20 years to completely rid their shelves of throwaway plastic. The survey by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and Greenpeace UK also ranks retailers based on their commitments to reduce single-use plastic, eliminate non-recyclable plastic packaging, engage with supply chains and transparent reporting. Iceland comes out ahead of the pack thanks to an ambitious plan for phasing out own-brand plastic packaging within five years, while most major retailers, including Tesco and Asda, are lagging further down the scoreboard, with Sainsbury’s at the bottom of the league.
Plastic production has soared twenty-fold in the past half-century and, at the current rate, is expected to quadruple by 2050.
In the UK, the grocery retail sector is the largest user of plastic packaging, accounting for over half of the 1.5 million tonnes of consumer plastic packaging used in retail every year
Recycling
When President Donald Trump signed legislation renewing the federal marine debris programme, he blamed Asia for fouling the world’s oceans. He named Japan, China, and “many, many countries” for dumping plastic waste that floats over to the West Coast.
“And we’re charged with removing it, which is a very unfair situation,” he said.
What Trump didn’t acknowledge is that plastic waste polluting the seas cannot be assigned entirely to Asia alone. East and West are inextricably connected by their plastic trash, as wealthy nations sell their recycled plastic scrap to Asia for the simple fact it’s easier to ship it around the world than process it at home.
That convenience was cast in a new light last January, when China, the biggest importer, stopped buying most recycled waste. After 25 years as the world’s salvage king, China refused to buy any recycled plastic scrap that wasn’t 99.5 percent pure–a move that upended a £150 billion global recycling industry with profound consequences on both sides of the world.
Innovative solutions

Washed Ashore Executive Director Angela Haseltine Pozzi leads a lesson on how marine debris can be used as a powerful art medium to engage students on the topic while at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. Behind her is one of her organisation's marine life sculptures crafted entirely from trash retrieved from the ocean and coasts.
Turning what's Washed Ashore into powerful pieces of art
Tumblr media
Walking southern Oregon's otherwise beautiful beaches, artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi began despairing how much plastic pollution seemed to appear on its shores. Inspired to turn that pollution into something more positive, she rallied volunteers to clean the beaches and turn the trash into sculptures of the marine life affected by plastic pollution. That's how Washed Ashore was born. In addition to creating these larger-than-life recycled sculptures, Washed Ashore's latest project, funded by the NOAA Marine Debris Program, incorporates theatre, movement, and creative writing into a curriculum for teaching students about marine debris. From a sleek marlin to an inquisitive puffin, Washed Ashore's mostly plastic, often massive sculptures serve as dramatic backdrops—and powerful ocean ambassadors—for these educational programs in zoos, aquariums, and museums around the country. According to Washed Ashore, since its inception in 2010, the program has processed 38,000 pounds of marine debris, turning it into more than 60 sculptures.
https://marinedebris.noaa.gov/prevention-projects/preventing-debris-washed-ashore-project
Tumblr media
What’s the project?
Flip-flops, rubber shoes, tennis balls, fishing gear, basketballs, and the list can go on. These aren’t just items you can find at your local sporting goods store, they are items sometimes found at a beach near you – in the form of marine debris. Marine debris comes in many shapes and sizes, from small plastic pellets to large pieces of consumer debris. The Artula Institute for Arts and Environmental Education’s Washed Ashore Projecttakes these debris items and turns them into spectacular art sculptures that demonstrate ocean life.

Pfizer appoints chief digital officer in boardroom shakeup
Pfizer has appointed a chief digital officer because of the growing importance of digital technology in R&D and business process, as part of a boardroom shake-up.
Last week Pfizer announced that Ian Read is to step down as CEO, with chief operating officer Albert Bourla taking the helm.
Following the change of leadership, Pfizer is also revamping its executive team, with the appointment of new chief digital and technology officer Lidia Fonseca the most notable change.
Pfizer said she will be in charge of creating and implementing a “strategy that accelerates and improves the company’s digital capabilities.”
Currently chief information officer at Quest Diagnostics, Fonseca will join Pfizer’s executive leadership team in January.
Lidia Fonseca
Fonseca previously served as senior vice president at Laboratory Corporation of America, executive vice president of global operations and technology at Synarc Incorporated, and was promoted through the ranks at Philips Healthcare.
Pfizer is following the example of GlaxoSmithKline and Novartis, two big pharmas that have already appointed chief digital officers to transform R&D and relationships with customers.
Last year Novartis unveiled Bertrand Bodson, formerly chief digital officer for Sainsbury’s Argos, as its first ever chief digital officer.
This was shortly after GSK appointed Karenann Terrell, previously chief information officer at Walmart, to become its chief digital and technology officer.
Other changes at Pfizer include Mikael Dolsten, who will assume oversight of the chief medical officer’s role.
Angela Hwang will become group president of Pfizer’s innovative business, responsible for the entire portfolio of innovative medicines.
Freda Lewis-Hall will assume a new role as Pfizer’s chief patient officer, advocating on behalf of all patients who rely on Pfizer’s new drugs.
John Young, group president, and chief business officer, will assume a new role, responsible for strategy, business development, portfolio management and valuation activities.
He will also cover business analytics, global commercial operations and patient and health impact, among others. Pfizer’s Consumer Healthcare business will also report to Young.
New CEO Bourla said: “We are at a pivotal moment in Pfizer’s history, with Ian Read having positioned the company with a strong portfolio of marketed products, a deep pipeline and the clear potential to accelerate our revenue growth.
“Given this opportunity to realize this accelerated growth potential, we are creating an executive team that has a proven record of success, an unwavering commitment to the patients we serve, and a clear value creation initiative. I look forward to working with these outstanding leaders to achieve the full potential of our pipeline and deliver our next stage of growth.”

McDonnell Urges Early Recall of Parliament: Brexit Update
(Bloomberg) -- U.K. opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn will deliver a speech promising to do “everything necessary” to prevent a no-deal Brexit amid reports the government is preparing for a three-month “meltdown” at British ports if Britain crashes out of the European Union. Labour’s finance spokesman, John McDonnell, said Parliament should be recalled this week to discuss it.Key Developments:Corbyn speech at 11 a.m. is expected to renew pledge to hold a second Brexit referendum if general election called this yearPrime Minister Boris Johnson will tell German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron this week the EU must offer an acceptable new deal or face Britain leaving without oneSunday Times newspaper cited leaked documents showing the government is preparing for shortages of food and medicine, as well as a hard Irish border, in a no-deal Brexit scenarioPound reversed early gains, falling 0.2%Labour Seeks Parliamentary Recall Over Brexit (8:30 a.m.)The Labour Party believes Prime Minister Boris Johnson should recall Parliament from its summer recess in the coming days to discuss the threat of a no-deal Brexit, the main opposition’s finance spokesman, John McDonnell, said on Monday.McDonnell was responding to a question on BBC radio about the group of more than 100 lawmakers, including Labour backbenchers, who have written to Johnson to make that request. Parliament is due to resume on Sept. 3.“It’s a good initiative by this group of MPs to say that we need to get back into Parliament,” McDonnell said. “We’re facing a critical issue here and we should be debating it in Parliament.”Former Sainsbury’s Boss Warns of Brexit Food Shock (Earlier)Former J Sainsbury Plc Chief Executive Officer Justin King said the Oct. 31 Brexit deadline comes at just about the worst time of the year for the food-supply chain, and that the document leaked to the Sunday Times on the impact of a no-deal Brexit presages a major crisis.“Anything other than silky smooth at our borders particular at Dover-Calais is going to have very significant impacts on the food supply chain in the U.K.,” King told BBC radio. By the end of October, food is already being stored up for Christmas, leaving little spare capacity to stockpile in anticipation of border delays, he said.CBI Says No-Deal Impacts Show Need for Deal (Earlier)The document leaked to the Sunday Times detailing the anticipated impact of a no-deal Brexit -- including port delays and fuel shortages -- shows just how “incredibly serious for our economy” such an outcome would be, Confederation of British Industry Director-General Carolyn Fairbairn told BBC radio Monday.“Business does have to prepare, but above all else what this does show is we must be trying to get a deal -- and that must be the number one priority of government,” Fairbairn said, adding that the U.K. as become more prepared in recent weeks for “the short-run disruption.”“Not fully prepared, I don’t think that can be done,” she said. “If you have any delays at borders, that would be significant. I think what we can’t be prepared for though is the long-run impact of a fundamental change in our competitiveness.”Earlier:Corbyn Gears Up for Election as Chaotic Brexit Fears EscalateJohnson to Raise Brexit Stakes in Visits to Germany and FrancePound Wins Holiday From Selloff on Resistance to No-Deal BrexitTo contact the reporter on this story: Alex Morales in London at [email protected] contact the editors responsible for this story: Robert Hutton at [email protected], Stuart Biggs, Andrew AtkinsonFor more articles like this, please visit us at bloomberg.com©2019 Bloomberg L.P.

MOSCOW | The Latest: Carrillo has Peru's 1st World Cup goal since '82

MOSCOW | The Latest: Carrillo has Peru's 1st World Cup goal since '82
MOSCOW (AP) — The Latest on the World Cup (all times local): 5:20 p.m.
Andre Carrillo’s 18th-minute volley has given Peru a 1-0 lead over Australia and its first World Cup goal since 1982.
It was a slow start for both teams, but picked up when Carrillo met a cross from the left and launched a strike to the far post. Peru had been held goalless through the first two games of the group stage. Peru has not been in the World Cup since 1982 and lost 5-1 to Poland in its final game that year.
Australia must win to have a chance at advancing to the knockout stage. ___ 4:45 p.m.
American referee Mark Geiger has been given a second group-stage match to work at the World Cup. He will handle Wednesday’s game between Germany and South Korea.
Geiger worked Portugal’s 1-0 win over Morocco. The 43-year-old from Beachwood, New Jersey, Geiger worked three games in Brazil four years ago, becoming the first American to referee a knockout stage match when he handled France’s 2-0 win over Nigeria in the round of 16.
The U.S. is the only nation with two referees at the World Cup. Jair Murrufo officiated Belgium’s 5-2 victory over Tunisia. ___ 4:15 p.m.
Veteran forward Tim Cahill will not be in the starting lineup for Australia in its must-win World Cup game against Peru.
Australia coach Bert van Marwijk has decided to go with Tomi Juric to replace Andrew Nabbout, who injured his shoulder in the 1-1 draw with Denmark. There was speculation about Cahill possibly moving into the starting lineup. The 38-year-old Cahill, who has scored in each of the last three World Cups, has yet to play in the tournament.
Australia must win and have France beat Denmark to have a chance of advancing to the knockout stage for the second time. Peru, which has already been eliminated, made two changes to its starting lineup with Anderson Santamaria and Renato Tapia winning selections. Lineups:
Australia: Mat Ryan, Mark Milligan, Mathew Leckie, Tomi Juric, Robbie Kruse, Aaron Mooy, Mile Jedanik, Aziz Behich, Josh Risdon, Trent Sainsbury, Tom Rogic.
Peru: Pedro Gallese, Anderson Santamaria, Miguel Trauco, Christian Cueva, Paolo Guerrero, Renato Tapia, Christian Ramos, Luis Advincula, Andre Carrillo, Yoshimar Yotun, Edison Flores. ___ 4:05 p.m.
France has rested several starters to play Denmark at Luzhniki Stadium after opening with two wins to seal it round of 16 spot. Needing a draw to ensure winning Group C, France coach Didier Deschamps has brought in goalkeeper Steve Mandanda, midfielder Thomas Lemar and forward Ousmane Dembele among six changes from the team which beat Peru 1-0 five days ago. Paul Pogba, Kylian Mbappe and goalkeeper Hugo Lloris are among those rested.
A draw will also let Denmark advance as group runner-up, and it can top the table with a win. Denmark will also advance if Australia fails to beat Peru in Sochi.
Coach Age Hareide named Martin Braithwaite in an attacking role to replace Yussuf Poulsen, who is suspended after picking up yellow cards in Denmark’s first two matches, both times after video review. The other changes see Mathias Jorgensen come into midfield and Andreas Cornelius to lead the attack. The lineups:
Denmark: Kasper Schmeichel, Simon Kjaer, Andreas Christensen, Thomas Delaney, Christian Eriksen, Martin Braithwaite, Mathias Jorgensen, Henrik Dalsgaard, Jens Stryger, Andreas Cornelius, Pione Sisto.
France: Steve Mandanda, Presnel Kimpembe, Raphael Varane, Antoine Griezmann, Thomas Lemar, Olivier Giroud, Ousmane Dembele, N’Golo Kante, Steven N’Zonzi, Djibril Sidibe, Lucas Hernandez. ___ 3:55 p.m.
Albania’s prime minister has opened a bank account allowing his brethren to offer their “symbolic contribution” to pay the fines levied by FIFA against two Swiss players of Albanian origin.
“Don’t Be Afraid of the Eagle” is the name of the account opened at Raiffeisen Bank on Tuesday by Prime Minister Edi Rama urging Albanians “to pay FIFA’s absurd fine on Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri.”
Xhaka and Shaqiri made hand gestures that mimicked Albania’s national symbol, a two-headed eagle, after scoring goals during Switzerland’s win over Serbia. The players have ethnic Albanian heritage linked to Kosovo, a former Serbian province that declared independence in 2008. Serbia doesn’t recognize that independence.
FIFA fined the players 10,000 Swiss francs ($10,100) each for unsporting behavior. Soccer’s governing body had the power to impose two-match bans if Xhaka and Shaqiri’s actions were judged to have provoked the general public.
Rama wrote on his Facebook page that the bank account was a gesture of “thanks and gratitude to the two sportsmen who put up millions of Albanians in a sport joy.” ___ 2:40 p.m.
Russian authorities have dropped charges against a British LGBT activist who was detained near the Kremlin as the World Cup was opening nearby.
The case was closed after activist Peter Tatchell agreed to accept a warning not to protest again. That’s according to his campaign manager, Simon Harris.
Tatchell was arrested while holding a one-man protest on June 14, criticizing Russian President Vladimir Putin for not doing more to stop abuse of gays in Chechnya.
Tatchell later said he was to appear in court on June 26, but the case was quietly dropped instead. A group of British LGBT football fans had a rainbow flag briefly taken down at Sunday’s England-Panama match but put it back up with help from FIFA.
A 2013 Russian law bans so-called “propaganda” of homosexuality to minors and has been used to stifle the LGBT community, though Russian authorities appear to be treading more carefully than usual during the World Cup. ___ 2:15 p.m.
Chancellor Angela Merkel is wishing Germany luck against South Korea after the “torture” of the defending champion’s last-minute win against Sweden, but she won’t be attending the match.
Germany salvaged its chances of advancing with Toni Kroos’ injury-time winner on Saturday. It faces South Korea in Kazan on Wednesday.
At a news conference Tuesday in Berlin, Merkel — who is under severe domestic political pressure in a dispute over migration — was asked if she would go to the match because she might not get another chance to see coach Joachim Loew’s team.
Merkel said she has to be in parliament this week, “but of course I sincerely wish the team all the best — and of course I hope for a good outcome after we all went through — torture, in the truest sense of the word — during the last game.” ___ 1:05 p.m.
Sweden coach Janne Andersson says his team has moved on from bitter feelings about its loss to Germany as well as the racist abuse aimed at midfielder Jimmy Durmaz on social media.
Andersson said Tuesday that the defeat made the team “stronger, more confident” because Sweden played the defending champions to a draw “with the exception of the final 10 seconds.” Sweden faces Mexico on Wednesday to conclude group play and still has a chance to advance to the knockout rounds. Mexico leads the group with six points but isn’t safe yet. If Germany defeats South Korea in Kazan and Sweden simultaneously tops Mexico, three teams would finish with six points, sending it to tiebreakers that start with the best goal differential.
The team issued a joint statement condemning the abuse of Durmaz, who gave away the free kick that led to Germany’s game-winner. Andersson says, “It’s important that we’re able to move on after that.”

FOOD SHOPPING IN BRITAIN WHEN YOU HAVEN’T GOT A POT TO PISS IN
AS REQUESTED BY AN AMERICAN WHOSE FRIEND, ABOUT TO BECOME A STUDENT IN LONDON, FOUND PEACHES COSTING $1 EACH IN BRITAIN...
For students, it’s best to avoid living in London. If it’s too late for that here’s some hopefully useful tips. London is expensive but supermarket prices are pretty much the same nationwide, so use them as much as possible instead of corner shops…etc. You’re not going to be helping a small business but you will be still helping to keep someone in a job and yourself alive (always a plus).
THE BIG FIVE
WAITROSE
As a student please consider Waitrose as a portal to another universe, where  your Dad has a name that makes him sound like a flatulent duck, or maybe he sells a lot of software. This is not a shop for people who have to think twice about having a crisp butty.
SAINSBURYS
A halfway house between Waitrose and the rest of this page – best avoided.
ASDA, MORRISONS AND TESCO
These were traditionally the cheaper supermarkets but are now struggling in a price war against European invaders so are still worth checking out for bargains. Eg the ‘reduced to clear’ fridge; this can be found by following the sounds of battle. Food (including meat) is moved here when it has reached it’s ‘use by’ date and is reduced in price. The price is gradually further reduced throughout the day and things can get pretty ruthless by 5pm – in Britain this means the queue system has been abandoned.
Any meat not cooked and eaten that day can obviously be frozen to be cooked and eaten on a later day. If you are catering for one and buy mince remember to divide the bloody stuff into portions BEFORE freezing. If you forget, a large serrated knife works better than a chisel or hammer.
 BUDGET SUPERMARKETS
ALDI, LIDL AND NETTO
The budget supermarkets, all "from Europe" (ie the mainland). Netto arrived first but I've never lived near one. Aldi and Lidl are avoided by snobs who think their food is all rubbish because it's cheap brands they've never heard of and stacked in cardboard boxes straight off the lorry. But their food is easily as good as the other supermarkets - I get most of mine from Aldi and can recommend a lot including their cereals, mince, fruit, veg and (importantly) chocolate.
Check their websites for the latest offers - every week Aldi has 6 fruit and veg and 6 meat or fish products on offer. Currently (July 2017) that includes 4 flat peaches for 45p instead of 65p - or you could pay 2.70 for 5 of the same in Waitrose, should you suffer a nasty head injury on the way to the shops.
Lidl and Aldi also offer the delights of the 'surprise aisle' - recently hilariously and perfectly described as "Argos vomit" by comedian Angela Barnes on Mock the Week. So when you're running low on bread, cheese and drum kits, this is where you go.
The only possible problem with these shops is they are usually smaller and so don't have 300 varieties of tomato sauce...etc. Oh and Lidl have just done away with hand baskets you can actually carry in your hand. >:(
 YOU CAN ALSO TRY:
HERONS
These might only be in the north, but keep an eye out. Or google them. A chain of discount freezer shops that don't sell fresh fruit or veg but are good for frozen or chilled food and dry goods like bread.
HOME BARGAINS
Where you can find, as it says on the tin, bargains for your home. Great for toiletries, stationery, cleaning products (you'll find a use for these after graduating) and now they also have a small selection of chilled and frozen foods.
MARKETS
Some have no doubt been gentrified in London but there will still be some old-fashioned ones that are a good source of cheap fruit and veg but be wary of idiot stallholders who think slipping you some mouldy raspberries is good for business. You might also find a meat van where you can get great bargains if you buy your meat by the tonne.
Poor people haven't been entirely squeezed out of London yet, so there are deprived areas where you'll find these and other cheap food shops. And lots of students; the students union will know of all the best local cheap scran sources.
Check out the mysupermarket website to check current  offers and compare normal prices.

TOILETRIES
Go to places like Home Bargains or Savers - the latter are the same company as Superdrug but the prices are about half.
