365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #151: What Have I Done to Deserve This? (1984) - dir. Pedro Almodóvar
Any assessment of Pedro Almodóvar’s career would be incomplete without a focus on one of his most captivating stars, actress Carmen Maura. She has a sterling showcase in the 1984 dramedy What Have I Done to Deserve This? as Gloria, a middle-class housewife who is overwhelmed by her family’s many needs. In the cramped apartment that they share in a Madrid high-rise, cash-strapped Gloria deals with her husband Antonio (Ángel de Andrés López), a cabbie who neglects her unless he’s hungry, horny or demanding cash; Antonio’s mother (the always delightful Chus Lampreave), who is addicted to sugary foods, keeps a collection of large sticks in her closet and tries to hide a pet lizard named Dinero from Gloria; and two sons, Toni (Juan Martínez) and Miguel (Miguel Ángel Herranz), the former of whom earns money as a drug dealer and the latter is literally given away by an exhausted Gloria to a dentist who is obviously a pedophile.
Life presents challenges for Gloria at every turn. Her only close friend in her apartment building is Cristal (Verónica Forqué), a friendly prostitute with a predilection for unusual clients. Gloria’s only fun comes from hanging out with Cristal and babysitting a young neighbor with telekinetic powers named Vanessa (Sonia Hohmann), who enjoys ruffling the feathers of her heartless mother Juani (Kiti Mánver) whenever possible. (You know you’re watching a Pedro Almodóvar film when it’s not at all surprising to witness a little girl rearranging a kitchen’s decor using only her brain.) Death and heartache visit Gloria’s home, but just when everything seems to be too bleak to abide, she finds a reason to keep living.
There is a clearly Fassbinder-esque quality to the visual aesthetics of What Have I Done to Deserve This?, but it’s also a comedy. As Chicago Tribune film critic Larry Kart more fully described the film in his 1985 review, “imagine a film codirected by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Jerry Lewis and scripted by Luis Buñuel and Cheech and Chong.” We see a detective with erectile dysfunction, a married pair of writers who drink their cares away, a bizarre TV commercial for coffee starring a young Cecilia Roth and a scene from either a musical film or TV show in which Pedro Almodóvar and artist/musician Fabio McNamara wear elegant costumes and lipsync to a melodramatic song. There is also a touching moment when Toni and his abuela attend a screening of the Elia Kazan film Splendor in the Grass - another way for Almodóvar to pay homage to his love of cinema - and the music composed by Bernardo Bonezzi creates an additional layer of emotion, such as in the score’s title track and in “La Soledad de Gloria,” which was reused in the opening credits of Law of Desire.
Overall, What Have I Done to Deserve This? isn’t as wholly successful as the stories and performances of Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, Matador and Law of Desire, but Deserve is still a necessary and entertaining production from the early years of Almodóvar’s career. The next film of his that I will review is High Heels, so I will look more in depth at the auteur’s fascination with the theme of mothers.

* / JUNO SETS SAIL
good afternoon, juno members ! we hope you saw your itinerary posted for our caribbean cruise this weekend. we set sail in two days, so make sure you’re beginning to pack and don’t forget your sunscreen !! if you see below, you will find all cabin assignments for our trip.
CABIN ASSIGNMENTS
* these, much like the cruise itself, are optional and for fun !! while we will not be re-assigning rooms, you can discuss this ic or ooc with other muses and muns to reorganize. just because a muse is “assigned” to sleep in one room doesn’t mean that they will - and other single cabins are available upon request, as juno spared no dime on their HQ’s one month anniversary.
** these were assigned with answers to the google form in mind but randomizers and hand curation were also used; we did our best but these are flexible !!
*** additionally, do not feel obligated to send your muse on this cruise !! there will not be any further plot drops during the cruise but your muse is more than welcome to stay in miami for the duration of the weekend.

CAST: Megan Hilty (Lorelei Lee), Rachel York (Dorothy Shaw), Aaron Lazar (Henry Spofford), Steven Boyer (Pierre/Louis Lemanteur), Brennan Brown (Steward/Mr. Robert Lemanteur/Gus Esmond Sr.), Stephen Buntrock (Josephus Gage), Simon Jones (Sir Francis Beekman), Deborah Rush (Mrs. Ella Spofford), Sandra Shipley (Lady Phyllis Beekman), Megan Sikora (Gloria Stark), Clarke Thorell (Gus Esmond Jr.)
NOTES: Filmed from the back of the balcony. Many heads appear in the frame to start, then when the filmer gets his bearings, the video improves greatly. There are a few times (mostly at the beginning) when the filmer replaces some poor video moments with still shots. These still shots are less than 2 or 3 minutes of the entire show. Overall, a great video, and Megan Hilty is amazing

CAST: Richard Fleeshman (Sam Wheat), Caissie Levy (Molly Jensen), Da'Vine Joy Randolph (Oda Mae Brown), Bryce Pinkham (Carl Bruner), Michael Bladerrama (Willie Lopez), Tyler McGee (Subway Ghost)
NOTES: Great HD capture of the show toward the end of the run. This is a great capture compared the previous one from March, with the changes that were made from the previews and with the original Oda Mae Brown. Despite what the reviews said, this is one show I thoroughly enjoyed and wish it had a better life on Broadway as it deserved! A- Recording with mostly zooms and a few wide shots. Great views of the effects. A Google Drive link is floating around that contains the wrong VOBs for Act 1-3 and Act 2-2; make sure you get everything!

540 Local Elected Officials From All 50 States Urge Prez Trump to Import More Refugees to U.S.
Joe Biden has promised to make this happen, including taking in foreigners from terrorist hotspots around the world. In fact, Joe Biden was one of the original architects of the fraud-ridden refugee program that has destroyed neighborhoods across the U.S.
by Ann Corcoran
I told you here that the refugee industry was working on a letter to the President urging him to get the refugee flow into America moving again.
Yesterday they sent the letter with 540 signatories.
Says Amnesty International:
By signing this letter, these elected officials have joined together to voice their commitment to welcoming refugees in their communities and reviving the United States’ legacy as a leader in refugee resettlement.
I notice something missing from the letter. It avoids giving the President a number, but the industry has made it very clear!
They want 95,000 refugees to begin arriving on October first.
The President could make a decision this month on how many refugees might be invited to live in the US in FY2021. He could also legally set the ceiling at zero.
All of my posts on the topic are tagged FY2021.
Here are the signatories from yesterday. The list is handy for identifying those local elected officials who are changing America by changing the people.
I don’t know why the organizers think that these open borders advocates will hold any sway with the President, but they sure make it handy for you to identify the other side where you live. Target them for retirement when they come up for re-election!
(For a little additional fun, see last year’s list here.)
They say the list is bipartisan, but there is no indication of party affiliation. You will need to look through those listed in your state to see if Republicans are among those looking to import more poverty to your city.
