Week 6: Favorite WLW movies / shows
15-week Sapphic challenge
PS: I didn’t include shows or movies that have sapphics as side characters or side storylines with little screentime
Shows
Orange Is The New Black (2013-2019)
Torrent :)
Not only the best WLW show, but it’s one of the best shows of all genre and all time. I mean, they are the reason that Netflix became successful (Ungrateful MFs). If you haven’t watched it yet, you’re missing a lot, i swear. I’m not exaggerating when i say this show changed me and made me grow as a person.
A League Of Their Own (2022-)
Prime Video
It’s character complexities, queer majority, diversity, intersectional stories, heart and sense of humor reminds me a lot of Orange is the new black so if you like the latter, watch this and vise versa. + Women in sports, duh!
The Sex Lives Of College Girls (2021-)
HBO Max
Mean (but not really a bad person u know) lesbian lead, let’s go! This show is f*cking hilarious like you won’t just love the show for the lesbian representation, but all of the leads! It’s more than its title!
Dickinson (2019-2021)
Apple TV
Haven’t finished it yet, but it’s already on my top 5. Not every show can pull off a modern interpretation of period pieces. And thank you, Apple TV for letting the show wrap up in the middle of lesbian cancellations. Thank you for the bare minimum.
Gentlemen Jack (2019-2022)
HBO
Haven’t watched the show yet, but I KNOW, i know it would be one of my favorites. I love badass lesbian historical figures especially when they are gender-nonconforming
Movies
But I’m a Cheerleader (1999)
Hulu
Classic. Historical. I think this is the 1st lesbian movie i’ve watched after i came out? It also helped me became more aware of my compulsory heterosexuality.
Ang Huling Cha-Cha ni Anita / Anita’s Last Cha-Cha (2013)
Juanflix (DM me if you’re outside Philippines)
Unfortunately, only few people know about this movie, but it’s really one of the best WLW movies in the Philippines AND in the world. And just so you know, the older woman and the girl didn’t have any weird romantic or sexual relationship, this is just all about the lesbian girl’s first childhood crush. A very wholesome story!
Rafiki (2019)
Hulu
This is not hyped enough and we all know the reason why. :) Very beautiful film with amazing cinematography, chemistry and soundtrack. It’s banned in Kenya so make sure to support this movie.
TRIGGER WARNING: Blatant and violent Homophobia scene near the end
NECESSARY SPOILER: It has a good ending so don’t worry
Saving Face (2004)
Prime Video or Apple TV
Cutest WLW movie ever! It felt very warm the whole time i’m watching it. Another Sapphic classic and Lesbian 101 for baby gays.
Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)
Hulu
A masterpiece and a great take on Female gaze. Art and Lesbianism really are partners.

BAR BOYS dir. Kip Oebenda (2017)
this is one of those feel-good films, that one should watch when they miss their friends.
PATAY NA SI HESUS dir. Victor Villanueva (2016)
hands-down one of the best movies i've seen. i swear to god this was so good. its got trans representation, dark humor, great cinematography, seriously what more can u ask for?

SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION FROM LILIA CUNTAPAY dir. Antoinette Jadoane (2011)

ANG HULING CHA-CHA NI ANITA dir. Sigrid Andrea Bernardo (2013)
i think every queer kid should watch this film and every queer parent should too. i love this film with my whole heart.
MA ROSA dir. Brillante Mendoza (2016)
because this wouldn't be complete without this a brillante mendoza film. I THINK EVERY FILIPINO SHOULD WATCH THIS. such a damn good film.
.
.
.
welp. that's it for now. i just really think that more people should watch indie films and see that filipinos are more than capable of writing damn good films, instead of the mainstream movies y'all watch that are just cringey and too generic at times. anyway, there'll prolly be a part 2 to this because there's a shit ton of films i wanna share. but watch these for now. oh oh oh! and feel free to flood my asks about films, i would absolutely love you forever if u sent me an ask!

Inagaw Na Bituin: Ready to shine on GMA
It's Kyline and Therese's time to shine when GMA Network premieres "Inagaw Na Bituin" on February 11 placing on the second timeslot of the Afternoon Prime Block. That timeslot used to air Therese Malvar's previous show "Legally Blind" with Janine Gutierrez and Mikael Daez.
For More Information about Legally Blind: http://kuyarexdelsdiaries.tumblr.com/post/181892751261
The series is led by Kyline Alcantara (from Kambal, Karibal) & Therese Malvar (from Legally Blind) for the first time in their leading roles, along with veterans Sunshine Dizon (from original Encantadia, Ika-6 Na Utos), Angelika dela Cruz (from Ika-6 Na Utos), Marvin Agustin (from ABS-CBN's Magandang Tanghali Bayan, Whattamen, MRS-Most Requested Show and Kambal, Karibal) & Angelu de Leon (from The Stepdaughters). This is not their first time being together, in fact, they used to be part of Cinema One’s Hamog back in 2015. Kyline gained fame with her 3-in-1 acting skills on her co-lead role in Kambal, Karibal, earning her title La Nueva Kontrabida, as well as her singing skills. Therese earned awards in indie films Ang Huling Cha-cha ni Anita and Hamog. Malvar's show prior to Inagaw na Bituin was in 2017 with Legally Blind. This also serves as a reunion of sorts for some veteran stars. Sunshine & Angelika were lead stars of GMA’s hit series Ikaw Lang ang Mamahalin back in the early 2000s, and used to be together in a few other series. Marvin & Angelika used to be part of the main cast of ABS-CBN’s hit series Esperanza back in the late 90s. Angelika also has a singing career, known for her songs Sa Atin Lang, My Only Wish & Miss Na Miss Kita, among others.
Inagaw na Bituin tells the story of sisters Belinda (Sunshine) & Lucy (Angelika), who take their rivalry from love to dreams of being a singer. After Anna (Kyline), Belinda’s child with Eduard (Marvin), is kidnapped, their relationship will be put to a test. They will later on focus their attention and love to their niece, Lucy’s daughter, Ariela (Therese). On the other side, Anna will grow up as Elsa with Aurora (Angelu). Their families will soon cross paths due to their love for music. Joining the stellar cast of Inagaw na Bituin are Manolo Pedroso, Renz Valerio (from Ismol Family, Hahamakin ang Lahat, The Cure), Gabby Eigenmann (from Contessa), Jerald Napoles (from Impostora 2017, Super Ma'am), Jackie Lou Blanco (from Destined to be Yours, Super Ma'am, Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka), former Miss Philippines Fire 2009 Patricia Tumulak (from I Heart Davao, Super Ma'am, Contessa), Alyana Asistio (from JaDine's On the Wings of Love) & Clasher Melbelline Caluag. The series is directed by Mark Reyes.
On the other hand, upon release of its story conference, the series was panned by fans of Kyline, stating that the series should be aired on primetime instead of afternoon. Knowing that a lot of her fans are on their early teens, they have a point since they may not be able to watch the show in the afternoon. However, there are a lot of shows in line for primetime. Fans have no choice but to be content of the show’s schedule. They should be even thankful that Kyline has got another big break. Even if it’s on the afternoon, it’d be as successful as Kambal, Karibal, or even The Half-Sisters. Who knows? It’s somewhat ironic that the series will go head-to-head with ABS-CBN’s Kadenang Ginto, which is topbilled by Andrea Brillantes, her co-star in ABS-CBN’s remake of Annaliza. In the said show, Andrea, who starred as the title role, was the bida, while Kyline, who portrayed as the half-sister, was the kontrabida. This time, they’re taking on opposite roles & different paths. That said, it will be much of a friendly competition between the 2 best friends.
Since Kyline won the hearts of primetime TV, it will be another challenge for her to prove her worth on afternoon TV. Replacing the recently-concluded Ika-5 Utos starting this Monday at 3:25 PM, viewers will get a glimpse of another musical serye to lighten up their afternoons.

Favorite movies and shows i've watched (and finished) in 2022
TBH, This might be one of the best years for films and shows especially fornthe BIPOC community and i'm glad i've had enough time to consume a lot of media this year. In order-is
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
This is a cultural reset. I know multiverse concepts are not new, but this is different and might be the best. The concept coincided with the storyline. The title says it all, it is everything, everywhere all at once. Not just one of the best for 2022, but of all time.
2. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022)
Felt it with my heart from start to finish. You can really see that all the cast and crew put their heart and soul on it. No need to recast T'challa because Shuri as the new Black Panther is perfect and it won't erase T'challa and Chadwick's legacy. Amazing production and soundtrack.
3. NOPE (2022)
Jordan Peele did it again. I'm glad i've watched it in the cinema because this is something that would scare more on the big screen. We are not lying when we say that this is a different Alien or UFO story.
4. Abbott Elementary (2021-)
Quinta Brunson is a genius. This sitcom is fresh and this just proves that you can make a funny content without being problematic. A comedy series that tackles relevant issues. We need more of this.
5. A league of their own (2022-)
This might be the best, most diverse and intersectional wlw or queer series so far. This and Orange is the new black. Women, lesbian and black-led. Majority of the cast and characters are queer and they don't only focus on queerness alone, but also their dreams, skills, family and friendship.
6. Wendell and Wild (2022)
One of the best art and animation style i've watched. I like how digestible it is for children. It is fun, enjoyable and doesn't shy away from real issues especially when the specific issue doesn't talked about in art and media, Also, KEY AND PEELE!
7. American Vandal (2017-2018)
This is better than most of the true crime shows on Netflix. They don't glorify the culprit while not boxing the story from a black and white perspective. Very enjoyable.
8. Ang huling cha-cha ni Anita / Anita's last cha-cha (2013)
A coming of age film abput a lesbian girl and her first love or crush. Assuring you that this is not creepy at all. This is very wholesome and reminds me of my own childhood and journey into my lesbian identity. It can be watched on Juanflix (Message me if you are outside Philippines)
9. The school for good and evil (2022)
Not a big fan of fairytale stuff, but this is a very cool concept and i'm a big sucker for great production and costume design. I love the storyline too. It reminds me of Maleficent.
From left to right
10. I, Tonya (2017)
11. King Richard (2022)
12. Liway (2018)
13. Batwoman (2019-2022)
14. Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)
15. Paper girls (2022)
16. Dollface (2019-2022)
17. Betty (2020-2021)
18. Inside Job (2022)

LGBT-related films (worst to best)
Cos I get a lot of Qs about which LGBTQIA+ related film to watch. I tried putting together a list of films I’ve seen from worst to best. (Updated after I watched them):
Room in Rome [Julio Medem, 2010, Spain] This is porn. Nothing else. 1/10
Gigli [Martin Brest, 2003, United States] Atrocious. I have no words. 1/10
Very Good Girls [Naomi Foner Gyllenhaal, 2014, United Kingdom] Very bad film. 1/10
Raven’s Touch [Dreya Weber and Marina Rice Bader, 2015, United States] Yet another poorly narrated contrived drama by Bader. 2/10
Elena Undone [Nicole Conn, 2010, 2010] Very preachy, it’s like an educational video w/ characters too stupid to perceive the odds of forbidden love. 2/10
A Perfect Ending [Nicole Conn, 2012, United States] Tries too hard to be artistic. Isn’t artistic. 2/10
Rome and Juliet
The World Unseen [Shamim Sarif, 2007, South Africa] Well they are beautiful. Nothing else is special. 2/10
Jenny’s Wedding [Mary Agnes Donoghue, 2015, United States] In which Jenny is marrying someone she clearly has no chemistry with in a film that’s too predictable. 2/10
Bare [Natalia Leite, 2015, United States] Nothing here feels real. 2/10
I Can't Think Straight [Shamim Sarif, 2008, UK-India] Who directed this crap again? Probably the worst ensemble cast I've seen, I need to laugh. 2/10
Breaking the Girls [Jamie Babbit, 2013, United States] Crazy twists, crazy characters. 3/10
Anatomy of a Love Seen [Marina Rice Bader, 2014, United States] Forgot the importance of continuity, it feels like the first cut. 4/10
When Night is Falling [Patricia Rozema, 1995, Canada] Kind of flat but still worth a look. 4/10
Bloomington [Fernanda Cardoso, 2010, United States] Poorly-directed that despite the chemistry, it is still so hard to believe. 4/10
Kesäkaverit [Inari Niemi, 2014, Finland] Just another summer story. 4/10
Below Her Mouth [April Mullen, 2017, United States] Besides the sexual chemistry between its two characters, nothing much is in there. Just another erotic lesbian film that's already bordering on soft porn. Not buying the "love" there. 5/10
Imagine Me and You [Ol Parker, 2006, United States] Cliche, stereotypical. Yet I found it enjoyable. 5/10
Kiss Me [Alexandra-Therese Keining, 2011, Sweden] With a storyline so common, it could have played more with its plot. 5/10
Lost and Delirious [Lea Pool, 2001, United States] It should be okay if it didn't try too hard on making a point. 5/10
Freeheld [Peter Sollett, 2015, United States] Page has a flimsy character, it’s so hard to love her—that even w/ Moore’s flair, their chemistry still fails. 6/10
High Art [Lisa Cholodenko, 1998, United States] Solid, sexy, crafted characters. a psychological rollercoaster. 6/10
Les Chansons d’amour [Christophe Honoré, 2008, France] Has an interesting take on love, intimacy, and sexual desires, but has an ensemble of half-baked characters to make it work. 6/10
Our Love Story [Lee Hyun-ju, 2017, South Korea] I would love to have liked it but the chemistry doesn’t work for me. 6/10
The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister [James Kent, 2010, United Kingdom] Anne Lister in eighteen hundreds is interestingly and impressively way ahead of her time. 6.5/10
Tipping the Velvet [Geoffrey Sax, 2002, United Kingdom] Starts off so good, but crumbles towards the end. 6.5/10
Boy Meets Girl [Eric Schaeffer, 2015, United States] I would like it to go somewhere else, but everything is unexpected and that’s what’s best about it. 6.5/10
Atomic Blonde [David Leitch, 2017, United States] I love it. I hate that they killed the part of her that makes her human, but I love it. 6.5/10
Heartland [Maura Anderson, 2017, United States] A lot of technical expertise is lacking but it's heartbreaking just the same. 7/10
Loving Annabelle [Katherine Brooks, 2006, United States] Despite its lack of plot, it was enough to love Annabelle. Seems half-cooked though by the end of the film. 7/10
Affinity [Tim Fywell, 2008, United Kingdom] I’m very angry, disappointed, and affected. If that’s the goal, then it did I great job. 7/10
Baka Bukas [Samantha Lee, 2017, Philippines] A realistic take on coming out and drifting apart. 7/10
The Girl King [Mika Kaurismaki, 2015, Sweden, Finland] has a strong female character who does not dare conform to society’s truths. 7/10
Jorgen + Anne = Sant [Sewitsky, 2011, Norway] When it comes to love, who are we to judge? 7/10
Show Me Love [Lucas Moodysson, 1998, Sweden] Rebellion, depression, confusion, fear, pain... This film is so sincere w/ what it wants you to understand. 7/10
That’s Not Us [William Sullivan, 2015, United States] Very real and natural, I’m nostalgic for reasons I cannot explain. 7.5/10
Stranger by the Lake [Alain Guiraudie, 2014, France] Engrossing in a strange kind of way. 7.5/10
Love, Simon [Greg Berlanti. 2018, United States] It’s a very familiar coming-of-age romance, but that familiarity is what made it stand out. 7.5/10
Ned’s Project [Lem Lorca, 2016, Philippines] Has a profound sense of lesbian issues w/ a well-thought-of character superbly portrayed by Angeli Bayani. 8/10
Blue is the Warmest Color [Abdellatif Kechiche, 2013, France] The storyline is nothing I haven't seen before but how it's told is so sincere-it's honestly felt. 8/10
Pride [Matthew Warchus, 2014, United Kingdom] In which inspiring LGBT people fight for the rights of another oppressed community. A film about acceptance, respect, solidarity, and finding friendship amidst homophobia and union battles. It is truly uplifting and heartwarming. 8/10
Beach Rats [Eliza Hittman, 2017, United States] Overall, a substantial commentary on the stigma of homosexuality and its effect on why people choose to hide. 8/10
Changing Partners [Dan Villegas, 2017, Philippines] uses strong dialogues and character play that makes it rare and magical. 8/10
Battle of the Sexes [Jonathan Dayton, Valerie Faris, 2017, United States] Makes me feel bad for not being alive yet when it happened. Ace. 8/10
Grandma [Paul Weitz, 2015, United States] I love the story, I love how it unfolds, and I love how it will live in me for sure. 9/10
Ang Huling Cha Cha ni Anita [Sigrid Andrea Bernardo, 2013, Philippines] Sometimes, it's the little heartache that reminds you of who you are. Absolutely astounding cinema. 9/10
The Hours [Stephen Daldry, 2002, United States] It has a perfect pinch of sadness which I am deeply in love with-sadness that's actually quiet yet blissful. 9.5/10
First Girl I Loved [Kerem Sanga, 2016, United States] a tender coming-of-age drama that tackles discovering self identity and the fear that comes with that realization. So raw, it’s thrilling. 9.5/10
Beats Per Minute (BPM) [Robin Campillo, 2017, France] Goosebumps. This is a film clear of its objective, it is exhilarating and exhausting in the good kind of way. 9.5/10
Thelma [Joaquim Trier, 2017, Norway] Meticulously-crafted film that questions fundamentalism as a basis for joy and purity. I yearn for films as poetic as this. 9.5/10
Moonlight [Barry Jenkins, 2017, United States] A rare impressionistic film on a man’s struggle to finding himself, something so rich in poetry and visual excellence, it’s spell-binding. 10/10
Fingersmith [Aisling Walsh, 2005, United Kingdom] Well-written, intensely-directed, and strongly-acted. Easily a favourite. 10/10
Respire [Mélanie Laurent, 2015, France] With its overall well-observed direction, it’s compelling both visually and story-wise. 10/10
Call Me By Your Name [Luca Guadagnino, 2017, Italy, Brazil, France, United States] Its authenticity is incredibly palpable, I can taste it in my mouth. Something made with much love, my heart aches. Timothée Chalamet is remarkable. That last frame is unforgettable. 10/10
The Handmaiden [Park Chan-wook, 2016, South Korea] Lavish, sensual, beyond clever. Having watched and read Fingersmith won’t make this gem a tad predictable. Park Chan-wook’s adaptation even exceeded my expectations. 10/10
The Duke of Burgundy [Peter Strickland, 2015, United Kingdom] Remarkable. A film so beautiful, it’s so hard to forget. I love this too much, it’s almost haunting. 10/10
Carol [Todd Haynes, 2015, United States] a tough film w/ first-rate performances by both Blanchett & Mara that utterly make up for its minor dull moments. 10/10

Ang Huling Cha Cha ni Anita (2013)
Ang ganda ganda mo
So g and I found our weekly movie date in Colours channel, that's every Sunday noon. (Dun ko napanood yung Puti ni Ian Veneracion and ang ganda ng aesthetic nun and nung movie itself)
Tawa nang tawa si g sa movie na to, panay kasi kalokohan. (And she finds her shiboli self in Anita, I guess? Hahaha)
Kung may pagdadalaga si Maximo Oliveros, eto yung sagot. Realisasyon ng sexualidad ni Anita🌹
We're so quick to judge others when we don't really know their story, their pains and struggles [yan yung takeaway ni g] Masyado overrated! Hahaha. Yung tumatak sakin is yung moment niya sa nanay niya. Maiiyak na nga sana ko (because my weak heart) Binilhan kasi ni mother ng shirt 👕🤖 si Anita, alam naman daw kasi niyang di magugustuhan ni Anita yung dress (given na earlier in the movie, sandals, dress ang pinipilit niya kay Anita, pinipigilan yung lesbian tendencies) So alam pala niya all this time and tanggap niya kung ano si Anita ;"> ♡
