Ten First Lines
Thank you @cuarthol and @anerea-lantiria !
Rules: share the first lines of ten of your most recent fanfics (or chapters) and tag ten people. If you have written fewer than ten, don’t be shy and share anyway.
"The lantern’s light made a sphere of orange glow; the air was thick with moisture." Dust of Snow (Silm fic)
[redacted because it's in Anonymous Collection]
[redacted because it's in Anonymous Collection]
“Finrod, Finrod, come quickly!” All the Stars are Faded (Silm fic)
"Silence." Trapped (Thryce fic)
“You’re coming to the talent show tonight, right?” A Talent for Mischief (Mischief Managed fic)
"The trees flanking the entrance were just blooming as Finrod hurried up the steps two at a time." Tapestries and Fate (Silm fic)
"The 'rumpus room,' as your mother called it – otherwise known as the basement – was strewn with suit jackets, heels, bowties, and decorative shawls and clutches." After-Party (Mischief Managed fic)
"Arihnda stretched her legs lazily under the sheets, as she sipped the delicious caf Thrawn had just brought her." Just Another Sunday Morning (Thryce fic)
"Sparks from the firepit twirled upward in the night." Well, I Never! (Mischief Managed fic)
And a bonus, since I had to redact the two stories that I have in Anonymous Collection. This is from my current WIP:
"Karyn smiled with satisfaction as she surveyed the setup for the dining room table."

Oh! This is you! Hello! (I get lost in people's different identities on different platforms 😆)
Hi! Yes :D I regret accepting this tumblr-offered username a little, but now I'm too attached to it to change it. At least my discord and Ao3 names are mostly the same.

Ahh it’s here!!! Thank you so much for interviewing me!! It was an absolute treat to work with you, and an honour to be included in the Fanartics column <333
This week, we are thrilled to introduce our newest newsletter column, Tolkien Fanartics, which will focus on everything that is art-related to do with Tolkien. For the inaugural article, the column's lead writer, @anerea-lantiria, had the chance to chat with the artist @arlenianchronicles (Cassandra) about her artwork, her approach to her work, and her journey to becoming an artist.
If you've spent any time in the #silmarillion tag on Tumblr, you've seen Cassandra's art: its vivid, luminous quality fairly leaps from the screen, and her willingness to tackle some of the most emotionally fraught scenes in the legendarium gives her work a narrative quality that invites contemplation of the stories and relationships behind her characters. You can read Anérea's interview with ArlenianChronicles here.
P.S. If you don't get our weekly email newsletter, you can subscribe here. Each week's edition includes fanworks added to the SWG that week, SWG news, and a rundown on ongoing events around the Tolkien fandom ... and of course our regular columns like Tolkien Fanartics!

A new fic in the Montreal Confidential series is now up! Read White Lace and Promises here.
Two years after the events of Montreal Confidential, Crowley has been hired to play at a fancy society wedding. This means a weekend away at a posh hotel for him and Aziraphale – something they’re both looking forward to. It should be pure fun, but the occasion dredges up complicated feelings. And meanwhile, Crowley’s colleague, Eric, keeps casting flirty looks in Crowley’s direction.
Or find the whole Montreal Confidential series here.

Atanatárissë
Fic by @eilinelsghost; Art by @anerea-lantiria For @tolkienrsb 2023
Fic Rating: T; Art Rating: G Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Anárion & Elendil, Finrod/Bëor, Hiril/Hathaldir, Hiril & Rían, Hiril & Beleth, Andreth/Aegnor, Andreth & Adanel, Bëor & Belen, Belen & Finrod, Belen & Baran, Bëor & Baran Characters: Anárion, Bëor, Finrod, Silmariën, Hiril, Hathaldir, Rían, Beleth, Andreth, Adanel, Aegnor, Belen, Baran Word Count: 16,914
In Nargothrond in the First Age, Bëor wrote down the oral tradition of his people to pass on to his younger son, Belen. Throughout the rest of that age and the next, his descendants preserve this book through grief and joy, war and cataclysm, from the highlands of Dorthonion to the fall of Númenor, and reencounter the mythology of their people in the ongoing dance of memory and immortality.
Atanatári: (Quenya) The Fathers of Men Issë: (Quenya) Knowledge, Lore
"Belen [was the] second son of Bëor the Old, to whom the wisdom of Bëor (for Bëor himself had been one of the wise) was chiefly transmitted." - Introductory notes to the "Athrabeth Finrod ah Andreth," Morgoth's Ring, page 306
I am thrilled to finally get to share Atanatárissë with you all! I was so nervous going into TRSB this year - I've never done an event before and am very new both to writing fanfic and to online fandom in general - but this has been one of the most delightful writing experiences I've ever had. I have so much gratitude to @anerea-lantiria for this incredible art and for the amazing encouragement she's given throughout this whole process. It has been such a joy to work together on this project and I'm indebted to you for providing the inspiration that allowed this piece to come to life.

Featuring art from @anerea-lantiria, article by @dawnfelagund
Although Star Trek and media fandom are often credited as the beginning of fanfiction, the first fanfiction texts are much older than that and oriented in book fandoms. (The first fanfics are older even than the term fanfiction!) The first two known Tolkien fanfics appeared in the 1960 fanzine I Palantir, and they couldn't be more different.
This Cultus Dispatches column from @silmarillionwritersguild analyzes these two old fics, in particular how they illustrate the fan studies concept of affirmational and transformational fandom. Transformational fandom is often depicted as the fertile field where fanworks grow, but Tolkien fanworks (and probably many other fandoms' fanworks as well) defy this, drawing on affirmational elements oriented in mastery of canon and consideration of Tolkien's authority. The earliest Tolkien fanfics not only show how both "types of fandom" can give rise to fanworks but how, even in fanworks that clearly belong to one or the other, elements of the other fandom approach are essential to making a particular story work.
You can read the article "Affirmational Fandom, Transformational Fandom, and Two Old Tolkien Fanfics" here.

not a sunday. the sentences? i'm not counting all that
Thank you to @wanderer-on-the-steppe, @theworldisquietheretooquiet, @meadowlarkx, @thelordofgifs! <3This is from this morning's self-indulgent brainstorming.
The people of Mithrim and the Falas had said of the bard-king only, A tyrant to his own, generous to useful strangers, too fond of war – and Galadriel and all her frost-bitten ladies scoffed in deepest disdain whenever the regency was spoken of. Daeron had prepared his diplomacy and his lays, gone to the feasting expecting a show of haughtiness, fine arrogance, competitive courtesy perhaps. But the rider wearying plain singer-braids dismounted from the biggest, ugliest horse Daeron had ever seen and walked up to him, splendid in silk and samite and silver pauldrons; and gathered Daeron’s hands in his large, ungainly palms to bend over them and kiss them, before even turning to do obeisance to any of his royal kin. “At last,” said Maglor of the Gap, smiling disarmingly, so sincere it filled and overfilled the air with the sweet, dizzying truth-speaking of his voice. “I have heard your coming for days and days, Master Daeron. How dearly the land gladdens in love of your passing! At last I have seen you, and I begin to understand it.” “Brother,” the Lord of Himring said, voice barely inflected; Daeron gathered this was what passed for good humour among the lords of the Noldor. To Daeron he said, almost wry, “Pray forgive my lord Lieutenant. I can well attest that he has been a humble student of your work for all his life, with varying levels of mastery.”
I am not sure who has and hasn't been tagged a hundred times already, so here goes, with zero pressure: @melestasflight, @samarqqand, @welcomingdisaster, @slightnettles, @ettelene, @thescrapwitch, @minamvrray, @anerea-lantiria

Throwback Thursday
Thank you for mentioning me @cuarthol 🤗 Not so far back for me, this was written in 2019.
Behind them, as he turned to look back, the mountains loomed, black and threatening. Above Utumno, their worked pillars spiked into a monstrous iron-black crown that frowned down across the world.
And now I have seen the one who wears that crown...
His throat closed convulsively. We are still too close. He turned to hold his people, all those whom had survived, in the embrace of his gaze. He knew that they needed to enact their release, to feel it in bone and soul and blood, but it was too dangerous. He made a tiny gesture with one finger, Wait. Not yet.
They ran on, down through the wild hills, past the bright laughter of thin streams, across grass that skimmed soft and buoyant under their feet, and the pressure in Élernil, in all of them built and built and was held, hammered down, strangled until — now.
They stopped as one. Then, as if a string had been cut, they sank to their knees, raised their heads and screamed. The sound ripped through the mild, grey morning, desolate, brutal. Birds rose, clattering from the trees in squawking alarm. Deep within the release, they did not see or hear. Some broke into wild laughter so terrible that it burnt the throat and scorched Élernil’s soul. They tore at their faces, their hair, wept, clawed into the grass as if digging their own graves. But their dark graves lay northward, under the iron crown that had devoured their souls and buried what was left of them. Leaving...whatever they were, now. Another kind of monster

3 Things
@grundyscribbling and @admirablemonster tagged me to say 3 things I'm proud of from 2022.
1. I’m proud to have run TRSB again for a fifth (and final, for me) time.
2. I’m also very proud of the fics I wrote for the event - Willow-Meads, And Radishes For Tea, and Aching Wings. Especially the last one, as I picked the pinch hit up in mid August!
3. I have successfully reached the 12 month mark with my puppy. He is obedient, sociable, and neither of us went insane, so I call that a win. Tagging @spiced-wine-fic @thegentlestmaenad @anerea-lantiria @starspray @nienna324 @joyfullynervouscreator @lathalea @ettelene @gratuacuun @hauntedsiriel-blog @independence1776 @edgeoflight @hhimring @cycas and anyone else who wants to play.

@busymagpie's art shows eloquent and expressive character portraits, most often depicting characters in moments of comfort and bliss. In this month's Tolkien Fanartics column, @anerea-lantiria interviewed Busymagpie about her work: her approach to art, her evolution as an artist, and of course, her OTP, Maedhros/Fingon, all accompanied by a selection of her work.
Having started serious work on her art at the age of fourteen, Busymagpie has been drawing every day ever since. Mostly self-taught, she says of her work, "Art, and fanart in particular, is a way for me to tell stories." And her work does exactly that. Whether a cozy family gathering, a tender moment between a couple, or sometimes something spicer, her grasp of character and expression brings Silmarillion characters to life on the screen.
You can read this month's interview with Busymagpie here.

For @spiced-wine-fic and @anerea-lantiria, a wild Aredhel double drabble. Thank you for the gorgeous visual prompt and first sentences. :)
Lightning played over the peaks of the distant mountains. Thunder followed distantly, like a grumbling afterthought. The sharp scent of petrichor spilled down the wind and set the grasses fluttering as the rain rolled in. Aredhel scrambled up a rocky outcrop, heart pounding in her throat as the electric air sparked around her. It had been so long since the last rains fell! Her skin ached for the touch of the wild waters; she felt as shriveled and thirsty as the sheaves that rustled and creaked in the building wind. Back turned to Gondolin’s walls, she stripped to her skin, eager for the rain, glowing like a pale wand in the growing darkness. Under her feet, the crisped lichens and warm stones waited, as thirsty as she. Oh, for a downpour, for the sharp sting of it, the cold bite and roll! The pale city loomed behind her, graceful on its concentric hills, but that elegant strength was not what she needed. The raw world sang to her, with all its sharp edges, its thorns and tangled vines. Aredhel raised her chin to the clouds, all yearning, all joy. She held her arms open, welcoming the lightning, calling the rain.
Also (with image) on AO3.

Throwback Thursday
Thanks to @sallysavestheday for the tag to re-share my 2023 TRSB piece in light of the recent gallery opening.
Atanatárssë (T: 16,914 words)
Written for @anerea-lantiria's gorgeous art (below and embedded in the piece).
“Do ye hold that you speak with them, then? Those dead who have gone forth before thee?” Aikanáro had watched her, mesmerized as the quern ran its rounds beneath her hands. “Speak with them? Nay. But it is in memory that we carry them onward, holding life for them yet, by and within our own.” She had fallen silent for a long moment, then met his eye in a quick glance, sharp and searching. “By such we scorn fate’s maw, and make them deathless as thee.” Now Andreth ground the wheat in defiance. Her muscles burned as she gripped the haft and hauled the quern round and back again, each pass now a rumble of anger. Aegnor would no longer stand beside the whirling stone, his shoulder would not rest again upon the carved post beside the window, nor his eyes dart along with the work of her hands. For all his assertions that memory was the task of the Eldar, he had scorned its worth in the end. The final grains of wheat scuttled down through the eye and at last the stone slowed, fell still. Andreth stepped back, breathing heavily, and wiped the sweat from her forehead. It eased her restlessness to set the fury within these daily tasks, her pain beaten into the washing, her tears carded into the new-sheared wool, her anger spinning and cracking and shattering the kernels of grain till it formed a new substance, soft and bright and filled with possibility.
Tagging @that-angry-noldo, @searchingforserendipity25, @welcomingdisaster, and @thelordofgifs to re-share your fics too, if you'd like!

Ambarkanta: The Shape of the World as envisioned by Matej Cadil is one of the fan made maps featuring in this article.
Tolkien cared very much for the geography of his second world, which extended to making multiple maps to help him visualize place and nail down details such as travel times. This proclivity has passed on to many of his fans. Many of us recall poring over the map in our first copy of The Lord of the Rings or flipping frequently to the back of of The Silmarillion to find a location on its map.
For other fans, Tolkien's cartography has inspired them to build beyond what he gave us by making their own maps of his world. @anerea-lantiria's new series within the Tolkien Fanartics column focuses on fan-made maps of Tolkien's world. In the first part, she looks at maps that detail the building of Arda and of Aman, areas that, compared to the well-trodden paths of the Lord of the Rings, Hobbit, and even Silmarillion maps, require a lot more digging, conjecture, and imagination. In addition to finding stunning examples of maps of Tolkien's earliest legendarium, @anerea-lantiria spoke with several artists about how they envision the maps they make, blending Tolkien's canon with their own imaginings.
You can read Anérea's "Mapping Arda, Part I: Terraforming" here, published by @silmarillionwritersguild.
