Sabyasachi: “I have always been inspired by the mysterious orient. A visit to The China Club in Hong Kong, while on the Christian Louboutin Global Tour rekindled an old love-affair. I started researching on Chinese calendar art, cheongsams, wallpapers, tapestries and precious chinoiserie textiles. To pepper my mood I started watching Wong Kar Wai’s ‘In The Mood For Love’ with manic obsession. However, I didn’t want it to be all Chinese, India had to feature somewhere. So we went ahead and did cheongsam inspired blouses, in old Chinese calendar art colours but taking artwork inspiration from heritage ‘Shikargah’ prints. These prints were hand-painted by Bengal artists from The Sabyasachi Art Foundation and hand-embroidered to give a modern museum quality feel. The sarees were hand-painted in Chinese lacquer colours of chrome and black and edged with vintage Benaras brocade borders. One of our most iconic shows was Big Love (2015) where I paid a glowing tribute to Halston. I am born in the seventies so understandably I have a ‘Big Love’ for Halston and Studio 54. Even when I was in design school I used to pay constant homage to Halston through my sketches and illustration. Spring 2018 we reinvent Big Love once again. The focus is on power dressing but in a feminine way. I also wanted to develop an embroidery that would have a tribal primitive quality to pack a power punch alongside draped georgette. Our Bengal tiger belt, industrial sunnies and Christian Louboutin fetish shoes are all the accessories that you need. For make-up go ‘au naturel’ and wear your hair centre parted sleek and down. For the uninitiated, the word ‘Shikargah’ is of Persian origin and depicts a game preserve. Regional flora and fauna and royal hunting scenes are either vividly or abstractly depicted. In our effort to preserve silk screen printing in West Bengal, we created these 29 colour Shikargah prints for our organza sarees. Each saree takes over 9 hours for 2 printers to finish and in today’s time the complication of production easily elevates it to modern couture. Our models are styled with beautiful old world blouses, heritage South Indian jewellery studded with Burmese rubies (from the Sabyasachi Heritage Jewelry Collection) and retro sunglasses for added quirk. Designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee just dropped his new summer collection

Sabyasachi Mukherjee’s work is easily distinguishable from that of any of his contemporaries. High necklines, vintage embroideries, a sudden burst of florals, a dash of black—Mukerjee’s signature take on old world nostalgia has had the country falling for his work since the inception of his label.

Having forgone the standard format of runway shows, the designer released his spring/summer 2018 collection on Instagram last night. This season, Mukherjee’s offering, ‘An Endless Summer’, is divided between three themes—florals, bright colours and a lineup of ivory and gold looks inspired by Lutyens’ Delhi. To complement all of the garments are Sabyasachi Heritage Jewelry pieces that elevate the edit of occasion wear.

Mukherjee’s references for the collection range from Alice in Wonderland to Sarojini Naidu. To describe his standpoint on couture, he borrows from a designer whose aesthetic could not further be away from Mukherjee’s own. “‘Couture is an attitude, not a price point’ – Jeremy Scott, Creative Director at Moschino. Confidence gives you a sense of freedom. And I see that reflecting in the choices that brides make today. What is good enough for some to wear in a mehendi, becomes bridal for some. These decisions are not affected by price restrictions, they are merely forward-thinking choices. More and more brides I meet are going forward and embracing a sense of whimsy,” he elaborates in one Instagram caption.

Personal references are the foundation on which Mukherjee constructs his work. Those in the arts know that the thing that differentiates great work from good work are the emotions that it rides on. Between the high-brow influences of Lutyens’ Delhi and Shikargah paintings is a humble memory of visiting a certain circus in his childhood. Therein lies the influence behind the near-lurid colours, stripes and a sense of rhapsodic joy that comes from the smell of turmeric popcorn. Mukherjee takes his stream of thought and coverts into bridal couture that is the stuff dreams are made of.
