yessss literally this but he spends a huge part of the early story as Generic Guy Background Soldier. I literally only made note of him because grumpy put upon characters are a favorite archetype of mine personally. then he slowly exceeeds his expected relevance by, cumulatively, a lot... and then the backstory bombshell drops.
there is... a lot... going on here... what was that john mulaney meme "now we don't have time to unpack all of that" now we don't have time to unpack all of that... compels me though
#that said... I think Usami is the most overtly insane from moment one. or Anehata Shiton. or Henmi. or Edogai. or Ienaga.#they're the most alarming at any given moment. and one of them is responsible for an entire OVA essentially being lost media.#I've watched it...#...#it can stay lost.#(except outside of the uncomfortable stuff there's some really fun character moments god damn it why)

One thing I love about GK is how often characters die happy. Edogai died knowing he was of value to Tsurumi. Ushiyama died assured that he's a hero. Henmi died... doing whatever tf that was.
With the revelations Ogata made before he died, do you think he was happy? I keep going back and forth on it :/ You have really good insights and recently did a reread, so I'm curious what you think.
no, quite the opposite of that, which is why i'm saying that his death was exceptionally cruel, especially compared to everyone else (henmi, usami, edogai, anehata, ushiyama, hime & oyabun, ienaga all died some sort of accomplished and content).
ogata spent his entire life convinced that he is lacking something fundamental as a human being, but only because he was born to parents that didn't want him, parents that didn't love each other, therefore created something utterly defective. he was attributing all of his faults and actions to that inborn inadequacy, all while believing that only if he could become chosen by his father, by tsurumi, by the army he could make up for what he's lacking - and if he failed that, only if he could take his father's seat, even through deception, to prove that his resplendent father and chosen brother aren't any better than him, that even he, who is such a broken, lacking person, could achieve their heights, making them meaningless. if he can prove that he is no worse than those proper, whole people, then it doesn't matter that nobody ever loved him and that he was unwanted by anyone, because the difference between him and those who aren't lacking would be null.
but yuusaku loved him, or at least tried to. and he killed him with his own hand just to prove a point, to test a theory. somewhere at the bottom of his heart he knew that he did something wrong, and asirpa, by being kind to him, by trying to love him, by reminding him of yuusaku, shed a light on these feelings of residual guilt (not towards yuusaku or other people; towards himself) he has been avoiding for so long. this is why each time he'd point his gun at asirpa, he'd hallucinate yuusaku's ghost - it was haunting him, telling him that he can't make this mistake twice.
but if yuusaku loved him, and he felt guilt towards shredding that love to pieces with his own hands, then it means he wasn't a fundamentally lacking person. it means that he always had a chance to be happy. it means that all he did - killing his mother, killing yuusaku, backstabbing people, looking for love in all the wrong places, self-sabotaging, running away - weren't actions borne out of his inherent inadequacy, it were his OWN choices, so him becoming the wretched creature that he is was his OWN fault. he has avoided thinking of all that his whole life but then the poison circulating through his system made him delirious, terrified and helpless, and opened all his old wounds. sure, it was a relief to learn that he wasn't BORN broken... but the pain of realizing that he MADE himself broken was too great, he couldn't stand it, he couldn't look at it, so he shot himself in the one seeing eye to free himself from it.
i think a happy death for ogata would have been being proven right by having asirpa kill him, have his theory that good people will do bad things if pushed far enough confirmed and him dying smugly and somewhat peacefully with this knowledge. but the narrative went out of its way to give him a gut-wrenching self-imposed punishment before finishing him off. so no, i don't think he died happy.

Ushiyama Tatsuma (188 เซนติเมตร อ้างอิงจากฉบับอนิเมะ)

Don't know if you do these types of questions but do you believe ogata was purposefully written to be/appear as aroace (asexual and aromantic)? His seemingly lack of attraction might have been just used as way to showcase how he couldn't be bothered by anything other than his father/brother/guilt tunnel vision or to further imply he was a "psychopath who felt no love/couldnt understand it (at least specifically romantic love)" but the author also clearly isn't shy about sexuality representation.
Honestly...
I think Anton Chekhov’s advice: "If it’s not essential, don’t include it in the story" is what moves consciusly or unconsciously many authors.
For many characters in "Golden Kamuy" to decide about their sexuality and romantic orientations has no narrative purpose (there are of course exceptions, for example Wakayama, who was clearly interested in males and this was plot relevant, or Sakamoto and O-gin, who in addition to being physically attracted to each other were their own brand of romantic, Anehata who was sexually attracted by animals and vegetals and Henmi who was turned on by the idea of being killed by a male so you might even view him into some kind of kink, while originally Ushiyama was represented so sexually driven by females he would be willing to rape them to get laid... something that later was kind of retconned...).
Characters in this sense are often in a blank slate, the author doesn't bother to think/plan if they have sexual/romantic attractions or not and of which kind unless it's plot relevant. If, through the story, it becomes plot relevant, they'll paint them on the characters, if it will not... it's everyone's speculation.
In Ogata, if he was capable or not to have sexual and romantic attraction is not really plot relevant.
You can explain some scenes with him being asexual and aromantic (and I know others explained them with him being homosexual), but narratively it has more sense if he reacts in a certain way exactly because he has a tunnel vision and all he can think about is his father... and clearly not in an incestual way, since around this, and not around romance or lack thereof circles the whole of Ogata's character.
Of course we could argue that if in addition to his tunnel vision he was also asexual, we could say this might have made easier for him to reach in a certain way but it's a psychological analysis that Noda might not have needed to do.
He already had an explanation, it worked with the story, he didn't need to dig into it any further. He might have, of course, but if that's the case I don't know if we'll ever learn about it.
So I'll go for the answer I'll always go with this sort of things.
I don't think the author planned it but, if to you it fits his character, by all means go with this headcanon. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong and Noda actually considered it because sometimes, even if it's not plot relevant, authors do make up details for their characters anyway.
Of course whose are my two cents, I'm not Noda, I don't really know what he was thinking when writing GK so don't mistake them for THE TRUTH.
Thanks for your ask!

「ゴールデンカムイ」コミックス第23巻 アニメDVD同梱版 第四弾 CM
This poor Bear-san deserves a moment of silence:-
May his soul have been sent off to the Gods by this century.
I'm amazed that they’re animating this. They really, really are aren’t they?
That sulking noise Anehata makes...oh dear-y me, Seton must be turning in his grave.
We also have Kirawus nispa in his actual intro Finally
I’d forgotten how many so very epic Ogata scenes were there in this arc...
From the threatening to kill ‘em all, his expressions about the bear cub in a cage, Saving private genjiro, Emoting the “I can’t believe my eyes”, and ofc that epic lines that established Sugimoto the Immor al and Ogata the Explicit.
...a lot of stuff.
They better not pull a Barato and make it too rushed.

one of my favorite sequences in the manga bc like i knew about anehata, i knew about hasegawa, i knew about ogata's eye... but i didn't know about this and it took me completely unawares. especially the close up page lmao it came out of nowhere. it's a shame that usami stayed with us for such a short period of time because he's one of the best fleeting things this manga has produced no cap... a heavy lifting angel who got his wings cut short way too soon... and things of that nature. absolute specimen
#like it's the contrast of the cherry boy sensitive friendship and him frothing at the mouth while stomping this kid lol#gkposting

Can I ask a question
listen Im sorry if I come off as totally ignorant or something but this is my second time reading GK and once again im at a loss at this part. Ive been trying hard, but I just dont understand it, it totally escapes me. Why does Sugimoto refrain from saying “anything more”? whats the hidden joke? and why does ogata say that “all guys feel that way after they shoot their load”? like what exactly is he reffering to? that every guy feels the need to kill who they sleep with?
Can someone in all seriousness explain these things to me because its super, super frustrating to not understand

24. NOT A CONVICT: It turned out that the 24 tattooed convict is actually not a convict but Kadokura Toshiyuki (門倉 利運) former Abashiri head jailer, currently Hijikata Toshizō’s loyal ally, whose tattoo is however incomplete. The image above doesn’t include him because this was meant to be a list of convicts and Kadokura isn’t.
THIS LIST DOESN’T INCLUDE THE SITUATION BETWEEN THE THREE MAIN GROUPS CHASING THE TATTOOED SKINS UPDATED TO CHAP 263
That’s because:
- Tsurumi handed Hijikata some real skins among the fake ones, but we don’t know which they are.
- the tattooed skins entrusted to Kadokura has partly ended in Tsurumi’s hands and partly in Sugimoto’s hands.
Long story short, we don’t know anymore which skins has Tsurumi, which skins has Sugimoto and which skins has Hijikata.
