Beboptober Day 1: Old-Fashioned Cowboy

Thanks to @thestarlightsymphony for the prompt list! I have no idea how many of these prompts I’ll actually be able to complete this month, but I’m looking forward to the exercise and to creating/seeing some amazing new Bebop fan content! I decided to start off on a happy note, with some Ed/found family cuteness :)

Ed was happily stacking cans of Cowboy Andy’s Son-of-a-Gun Stew in the living room of the Bebop, waiting for Spike to return from his confrontation with Cowboy Andy, eager to hear him describe the adventures he’d had—probably in the form of a long string of gripes and complaints. His stories were always so interesting. Ed loved hearing the Bebop crew talk about their adventures as real, live cowboys, especially after having spent years just following their exploits vicariously through her computer.

She wasn’t surprised when Spike returned with a grouchy, annoyed expression on his face—that was par for the course with him—but she was surprised at the white cowboy hat, which she recognized as belonging to Andy from his picture in her computer’s database, that he was holding.

“What the hell am I supposed to do with this?” he said, holding the white cowboy hat disdainfully between the tips of two fingers. He tossed it unceremoniously to Ed—“Here, you take it. I don’t want it.”

She didn’t take the thing off for three straight days.

It was no surprise to anyone in the crew that Ed sometimes fixated on strange things—a stray photo in the online database, a disposable spork from a convenience store meal, the aforementioned cans of stew—with a pattern and intensity none of them could predict. But they were all a little bemused, not to mention amused, by how much she seemed to love that hat. Was she that enamored of that ridiculous cowboy?

She wished they knew that it wasn’t the silly old cowboy Andy whom she loved. It was them. Her friends. Who took her in and gave her souvenirs like this and gave her the chance to be a part of them, too.

They rest of the crew would raise their eyebrows—or more often, just ignore her—as she jumped around and yodeled with Ein on her back, pretending that she, too, was a real, live, old-fashioned cowgirl.

She wished they knew that, thanks to them, she already was one.
