Okay sooo these are smaller excerpts from a bigger slide presentation(it's 43 slides I won't subject you to that) I've made for shits and giggles that I think pertain to this subject -

Went and Maggie:

In the book, we meet Maggie and Wentworth Tozier, parents to an overactive, loud, boisterous Richie. Went is a dentist and often indulges Richie in his voices, allowing him to do extra chores when he spends his allowance, and is an attentive and loving father. Maggie, though she often wishes she’d had a girl, loves her son despite not always understanding him. Though only appearing in a few chapters in short scenes with their son, never once is it implied that the Toziers don’t love their son.

In the 2017 and 2019 movies Richie’s parents aren’t mentioned, however, Andy Muschetti has been quoted as saying:

"We don't know much about Richie's personality, because he's the big mouth of the group. But we suppose he's also neglected at home, and he's the clown of the band because he needs attention."

Why does this matter?

Why get rid of, or for runtime’s sake imply, that some of the only loving adults in the story are neglectful?

Whether intentional or not, this is a common trope for gay characters. Taking away one of the only loving sets of parents from the character you’ve chosen to make gay (the wrong character to focus this on IMO), is tone-deaf in the worst way. In a story full of abusive parents, it’s a shame to remove characters that could have shown a positive impact on your character.

Eddie's Identity and his Queerness:

Through every interpretation of IT, Eddie can be interpreted as queer. His relationship with Myra wasn’t because of his attraction to women, it is stated explicitly that he is not attracted to her, but because of his dependency on his mother. His encounter with the leper makes it clear what he is afraid of without stating it outright. This diseased man is offering him sex, he is terrified of disease (because of his mother), but his sexuality as well. It's a man, King could have used a woman if illness was Eddie's only fear but he didn't. Eddie is also insulted by It in the boys' showers at his school, It comes out of the drain to insult him. The shower setting is incredibly vulnerable and has been used many times in other media to point out gay characters. There are countless jokes (albeit homophobic and wrong) about public showers, it seems too specific of a scene to ignore. Many of the names and insults Eddie endures both from It and from Bowers, are similar to those later thrown at Adrian Mellon, one of the only openly gay characters in every adaptation. The similarities between the two characters don't stop at their insults either, they are both small in stature, there are several illusions to the similarities in their appearances and both men are asthmatic. Even if Eddie's is psychosomatic, his aspirator and asthma are an important part of his character, it wouldn't make sense for Adrian to also be asthmatic if it didn't mean anything.

The 2017 and 2019 movies ignore those qualities that were often associated with Eddie. The one allusion to his awareness of homosexuality comes in a transition shot in Chapter 1 where he’s riding his bike with the other Losers explaining what his mother had told him about AIDS. However, this is only an assumption as it is never explicitly stated what he’s discussing. In 1998, it was still considered a gay disease, so having Eddie talk about this is telling but a casual viewer wouldn’t pick up on it.

Instead of exploring the subtext of Eddie’s sexuality and how it effects his encounters with It, the movies change Richie’s story almost completely to make him gay. And even then it’s not explicitly addressed.

Changing the Fears -

Eddie:

In the book, the Leper, a physical manifestation of Eddie’s fear of illness, asks to give Eddie a blow job. He’s frequently ridiculed by Pennywise for being “girly.” These are a little more than subtle clues to Eddie’s sexuality. The book was written during the AIDS crisis during which homophobia ran rampant, and although young Eddie was growing up in the 1950s, a fear of homosexuality was not uncommon.

In the movies, however, neither of these things are mentioned. He’s never chastised for being less masculine and the Leper is nothing but a gross-out scene. They took any queer subtext Eddie had away from him and replaced them with “your mom” jokes.

Richie:

In horror media, it’s typically vampires that are used as metaphors for queerness, however, werewolves can easily be used in the same way. Richie’s original fear was the werewolf from the 1958 film I Was a Teenage Werewolf. A werewolf can also be a metaphor, there was no reason to change Richie’s fear to being solely his sexuality. A werewolf can represent the inner struggles, a battle between good and bad. There were ways to make Richie gay without making it his sole issue. The fear of being gay is another common trope portrayed in media, and in a movie about fear made in 2019 it’s kind of ridiculous.

I think people being up in arms about Andy Muschietti being the director for Batman: The Brave and the Bold are focusing too much on the negatives.

Yes, he directed The Flash. And people made it clear they hate that movie. But he also directed It, a genuinely good horror movie that people loved and respected. He also directed It Chapter Tow, which was definitely more campy and ridiculous, but I remember hearing people say it (Haha) was still fun for them even if it (haha) wasn't as scary this time around. Besides, having a HORROR director for a BATMAN movie? Look at Batman's rouge's gallery:

Any one of these villains are in good hands with a horror director's mind.

Plus, even when Andy's movies feel goofy, there's still some great direction with certain scenes, even in The Flash. There are some heartfelt scenes that genuinely work, with one between Barry and his mom miraculously getting me chocked up for a second there. It's ridiculous if you think too hard on it, but at the same time, it kind of works.

And as for how Andy directed Batman...He could do better in some aspects, I will admit to that. There's a specific way Batman should talk, with his dialogue coming off as dry instead of quipping like other superheroes. As for the action, while the CGI is noticable and rubbery, if Andy had more time to make the movie look good he could have given us the best Batman action in a while. He has a fair understanding of how a comic accurate Batman fights against impossible foes and improbable odds.

Could Andy Muschietti make the BEST Batman movie ever?

...Not even going to go there. That argument's too stupid in my mind.

But could he still make a fun and enjoyable Batman movie?

Yeah, I'm willing to say so. He has the vision and the character DOES seem perfect in his hands. If he's given enough time to polish everything out, we might just have something fun.

Call me optimistic all you want. I fail to see that as a bad thing.

There is, to me, poetry and symbolism in the way that Eddie Kaspbrak, the character finicky about germs, has a particularly close friendship with Richie Tozier, the character generally considered a dirty kid, both physically (by Eddie's mother) and verbally (by his friends, with fondness). And for that friendship specifically to include touching unique to their friendship (cheek pinching), and Eddie thoughtlessly sharing food Richie's already put his mouth on (the germs!). And for Eddie to have a love/hate relationship with some of these particularities about their friendship, and to have a love/hate relationship with getting dirty (which seems like a constant internal fight between his own, stuffed down wants, and his overbearing mother's). Richie is almost, in a way (and by my interpretation), a symbol of that, or a helpful transition for Eddie away from his mother and into his own shoes. A way for him to realize either that not everything his mother believes to be dirty is actually dirty, or even that being dirty isn't inherently bad.

The bit about Stephen King is just a joke about his response to Andy Muschietti's romantic adaptation of Richie and Eddie's friendship, which he says he like's the interpretation of, but definitely didn't write in the actual book (which people laugh at bc there is some pretty damning subtext that suggests otherwise)

IT Chapter Two: A Failure.

I will be criticizing the characterizations, the plot, the horror aspects and I will be comparing the film to the 1990 miniseries and the 1986 novel.

Characterization:

Ben. While he is still similar to his book counterpart, the writing for his character in the movies could have been better, because apart from being the lovesick poet and the history buff (a role which belonged to Mike in the book and in the 1990 miniseries), he didn’t get much of a characterization beyond that. In the novel, Ben was still a curious kid, who was interested in architecture and physics, and he was still a hopeless romantic, but he was not quite the poet the movies and the fandom makes him out to be, and as he stated in the book the reason why he liked haikus is because they are “structured poetry”. He was also the one responsible for building the dam in the barrens, the silver bullets and the underground clubhouse, which, except for the latter, were all excluded from Muschietti’s films. Another important moment from the novel, which was left out of the movies, was the scene where he stood up to his Gym teacher, who was complicit in the bullying he suffered at the hands of his classmates, which could have been in the second film, instead of his flashback with Pennywise, who was disguised as Beverly, a scene which didn’t provide the viewer with any new information about the character and its sole purpose was to pay homage to the 1990 miniseries.

Beverly. The movie at its worst never gets as bad as the book did, but one would expect that two movies made in the 21st century would be more progressive than a novel written in the 1980s, while certain aspects of the character were slightly better handled in the movies, it was not as good as it could have been. In the first film, Beverly is an outcast due to false rumors of promiscuity, an odd choice, because in the novel and in the miniseries she was bullied for being poor and wearing secondhand clothes, and because classism was still an issue in 1989 (the year the first film is set), it’s still is todays, so that was an unnecessary change. As was the fact that she didn’t interact much with other Losers, aside from her love interests (Bill and Ben), but perhaps the most infuriating decision was turning her into a damsel in distress and removing her role as the sharpshooter of the group. There are still positive aspects in Ch1’s treatment of Bev, she was given a personality while her book counterpart was an incredibly flat character. In the second film the scene where she is physically assaulted by her husband is played for shock value, while in the novel Beverly left her husband severely injured and he was later killed by It, in the 2019 film this scene was never addressed in a meaningful way, so it just comes across as gratuitous violence. Perhaps the best decision the second movie made regarding Beverly’s character was replacing the one-night stand she had with Bill with just a kiss to show that those childhood feelings no longer existed.

Bill. He was much better handled in the movies, while in the book the other Losers (except for Mike and maybe Stan) idolize Bill, in the movies they don’t, which makes them equals. My only complaint would be that scene in the second movie where he tells Audra that he wishes she would be like that woman he wanted. This would have made sense if they were going to stick with book arc and have him cheat on Audra, because he was still attracted to Bev, but that didn’t happen so that scene felt out of place with the rest of the film.

Eddie. He is the case of a character who was relatively well-written in the first movie, but then suffered a complete personality change in the second film. While in the first movie Eddie was brave and kind, traits which his book counterpart has, Ch2 Eddie was mean-spirited and cowardly. Most of his arc and coding was given to Richie, because the director thought that his fear of illness and relationship with his mother was enough, but he failed to realize that his fears of illness/germs and that feeling that he’s rotten are due to his internalized homophobia. And Muschietti didn’t even do a good job at handling what remained of Eddie’s arc (his fear of illness and relationship with his mother), he played it for laughs.  He did not even let Eddie have agency over his death, in the novel he chose to sacrifice himself to save Richie and Bill. In the movie he still saves Richie from the deadlights, but he turns his back on It, giving the creature the opportunity to stab and thus losing any agency the character had over his fate in the book and the miniseries. He also butchered his death scene, which in the novel was when he finally accepted himself:

“Fading, fading back. Becoming clearer and clearer, emptying out, all of the impurities flowing out of him so he could become clear, so that the light could flow through, and if he had had time enough he could have preached on this, he could have sermonized: Not bad, he would begin. This is not bad at all. But there was something else he had to say first. “Richie,” he whispered. “What?” Richie was down on his hands and knees, staring at him desperately. “Don’t call me Eds,” he said, and smiled. He raised his left hand slowly and touched Richie’s cheek. Richie was crying. “You know I … I …” Eddie closed his eyes, thinking how to finish, and while he was still thinking it over he died.” (Stephen King, IT pp. 1086-7)

 And Muschietti replaced that with a scene that made Eddie’s death all about Richie’s grief and changed his last words to “I fucked your mom”. All the emotional impact his death had has been completely lost.

Mike. No doubt he was the character who got the worst treatment in both movies. In the first movie, he was barely given any screen time, his role as the history buff in the group was given to Ben and they killed off his parents. In the second film, they didn’t even give him his a proper place to live in, he was just leaving in an attic, they had him steal artifacts from Native Americans (I’ll discuss that later), drug one of his friends, lie about the Ritual of Chüd being effective and he was the only Loser who didn’t even get a flashback of their own. While in the book, he was the historian, had the best parents and was one of the most important Losers. The only positive change that Muschietti made was having Mike go down to the sewers with the group for the final battle.

Richie. Even though he was played by Bill Hader, he wasn’t given the opportunity to be funny, apart from 1 impression, which was improvised. Also they removed his struggles with his sexuality in the first film, which was poorly retconned in the second film, his own bi-coding in the book was ignored and replaced with Eddie’s gay-coding (whose sexuality was left ambiguous at best), had him try to run away every 5 seconds (which something he never did in the book, he is one of the most loyal Losers), made his parents negligent just to add more unnecessary angst, because Muschietti thinks trauma = nuance. And just flattened an interesting character and took away any charm he had in the book, miniseries and Ch1.

Stan. While he was still the least developed Loser in the book, we never even get his POV, he had more character traits than just “the kid who gets annoyed easily”. In the book he was an eccentric kid with an equally eccentric sense of humor, had an interest in ornithology (completely left out apart from that puzzle), a good relationship with his parents who encouraged their son’s hobbies and weren’t as orthodox as the movies portray them. They replaced his encounter with the dead boys in the Standpipe for a painting (apparently that was Andy projecting himself onto Stan), which makes no sense because the dead kids offended him and Stan is a logical person, he would not have been scared of a painting. And they romanticized his suicide, framing it was an act of heroism, which sends the wrong message about suicide and is inaccurate, because the reason why the Losers were able to fight It is because there were seven of them, It was even scared of them. So, saying that his death was necessary to keep the Losers united just misses the point.

Issues with the Plot:

Raising the stakes to be more dramatic ended up hurting the story, while in the book the Losers’ decision to stay and fight It was one of selflessness, they decided keep a promise they made when they were eleven years old, in the second movie if they didn’t destroy It, they would end up dying, so this decision became one of self-preservation.

In the movie if they didn’t kill It, they would end up dying. This damaged the plot and eliminated the feeling of friendship, in this movie the Losers barely felt like old friends and more like co-workers. Another odd choice  was to include the Ritual of Chüd, turn into a Native American ritual and portray them in a stereotypical way and it was also unnecessary to include that, because the ritual doesn’t work, so the viewer just wasted an hour watching the Losers looking for their tokens and in the end It was killed by the power of bullying. Another flaw of Chapter Two is its runtime, the movie is almost three hours along, most of the flashbacks were unnecessary and its structure is rather disjointed.

The film also fails to address important scenes in a meaningful way, while in the book the murder of Adrian Mellon was based on a real event and was included to condemn this action, the film never addressed it (it wasn’t even mentioned afterwards), instead it was played for shock value. Probably because the actual scares of this were not effective at all, instead of relying on practical effect and trying to create tension, the filmmakers decided to use CGI for all these scenes. It would have been wiser if they had only used it in essential moments, for example, when It turned into a giant spider. In an attempt to avoid the criticism the 1990 miniseries faced for keeping the spider while also trying to stay faithful to the source material, they decided to create a ridiculous hybrid, a giant clown with spider legs, whose death was caused by the power of bullying. Ironic for a movie which was supposed to condemn such a thing. What the viewer was left with was a dull, unimpressive, charmless movie, filled with problems  caused by the director’s failure to understand the source material and the characters.

WARNINGS: Toxic relationship, aggressive ex boyfriend, violence, suicide talk (it appears like in one little part but i thought I needed to tw it)

Disneyland is supposed to be the happiest place on earth and yet here you are, listening to your boyfriend Kyle talking shit about how you treat him. And to make things worse, his "friend" Rebekah is getting out of one of the attractions. Yay. "Kylee!" The girls voice is loud and all you wanna do is get out of there. "Bekah! How are you?" Yeah, right. As if you didn't know they fucked. You knew they were together yesterday, you could feel her perfume in his clothes. "Your girl is soooo muzzy." 'God, just get me out of here's + "Okay, rule number one!" The older man started to list, everyone stopped talking and looked at him."Don't lose the kids. Yes, Hader and Chastain are part of the kids." "Hey!" Both said together and then laughed their ass off. "That's what I mean." He was serious, almost as if he was a horror movie crazy doctor or something. "Rule number two: don't do anything stupid." "That's for you." The Wolfhard kid elbowed Hader. "It's not." The older man that played his character put his tongue out like a little kid would do. "It's for both of you, actually." "Aww c'mon man." "Third rule is..." He waited for everyone to look at him. "If you need anything you can ask me or Barbara. Any questions?" Hader put his hand up and everybody groaned. "Yeah, dad, can we have fun?" The comedian asked playfully. "Just don't embarrass yourself or anyone here, ok? Go." As soon as the group started walking towards the park, the blonde woman looked at her brother. "You don't need to act so mad all the time you know?" " I don't know what you're talking about. Let's go before they do something stupid." The man ran to  little Jackson to help him find the rides he wanted to go to, the first rule was already broken. + Waiting to get your food, you were constantly trying to block all the conversation your boyfriend and his "friend" were having. "We should go to the Prince Charming Carrousel." Kyle eventually looked at you to see if you were paying attention, returning to look at her lovingly. "Everything for you, honey." He had said. "Everything for you, honey." You said mocking him. "What?" Kyle looked at you right away. "Huh? Oh nothing, nothing." You faked smile, hoping he wouldn't grab your arm this time, hoping you wouldn't have bruises to cover up. "That's what I thought." The way he looked at you made you shiver. "Can we please go see Belle? Or Ariel? I really want to take some pics with them." You said eating your churros. Some people passed by looking at your back and arms that still had some bruises from last time, God you hated that. "Excuse me, ma'am." A soft voice called you. "I'm lost, can you tell me where the Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is?" You got down to talk with the kid, trying to remember the exact place. "JACKSON!" You heard a man. "Jeez, kid! Don't do that to me." "It's okay, she'll help us, Andy!" Jackson said to the man. You could feel Kyle's eyes burning in your back, but hey, it's just a kid. You gave him the directions to the attraction. "Thank you, ma'am." The little kid said when you got up. He was really sweet. "Thank you." The tall man looked at you and you could see he had some curiosity in his stare. "Sorry for yelling earlier, I'm with a bunch of kids here, it drives me mad." "Not a problem, sir." You laughed. "Let's go, y/n." Kyle grabbed your right arm. You stayed quiet for a moment to stop yourself from shivering. "Okay, honey." "Is that a problem?" The man, Andy, said. "I'm her boyfriend. Stop trying to fuck her." 'oh no' you thought 'its happening again' "Kyle, I was just giving the kid some information, it's nothing." After you said that the only thing you felt was a slap in your face. "Don't talk like that to me, you whore. I'm sick of it." He was complaining that people were looking at you the whole week. It was a matter of time this would happen. "Let her go." Andy said, ready to fight him. Kyle was still holding your arm tightly. Jackson was scared, holding the blonde woman's hand, both starring at you three. Rebekah was sitting on a bench, eating your churros and watching the little show. "Make me." The blonde woman gave Jackson to a redhead woman that went to talk to her, they seemed like good friends. She then walked your way. Andy punched your boyfriend's face, he let you go and the blonde hugged you and got you closer to her friend and the kid. It all happened so fast, they were punching each other, Kyle was surprisingly losing, and then a security guard came running. Andy explained the situation while holding Kyle on the ground. "I'll take it from here." He got Kyle and started walking. "And what about him?" He started yelling, trying to get away from him. "He didn't do anything... As far as I care you tripped and fell on the ground." The guard explained. "Y/n! You come right here." You tried to go, but the blonde was still holding you in place. "I have to go." "You don't have to." She said. "Not anymore." "You don't understand... He'll get mad and then beat me up again." This came out between sobs. "He said that if I ever leave him he'll kill himself!" "He won't, honey." The redhead said softly. Her hand on your shoulder. You were crying. Hard and painfully. Your knees on the ground, the blonde still hugging you, and you hold onto her tightly. "Everything's gonna be okay." "Barb." Andy said, helping you both get up. They talked a little bit, but you didn't understand Spanish. She was still hugging you, saying everything is going to be okay and that you're free now, Andy went to buy some cold water for you. "I didn't got the chance to know you better. My name's Barbara, you can call me Barb if you want to." Barbara smiled. "I'm y/n, you can call me y/n/n." You smiled back. People like Barbara and Andy were rare in your experience, normally people would let Kyle beat you and even blame you for that. "Thank you for helping me. I really appreciate that." "Oh honey, that's the least we could do. I'm so sad that he was able to slap you tho." "Not the first time, not the first place..." A sigh escaped your lips. "Here." Andy gave you the water bottle. "Put it on your cheek." "Thanks." He scared you a little. He was handsome, but really tall. And he also looked like a crazy doctor. "Not for that, miss." He nodded to a group of mostly men that joined the redhead woman and then looked at you again. "You should come with us to the attractions. That way no one will bother you and... You can actually have fun." "That would be nice." "Great, you will love them." He gave you his hand to help you up again. "These two are clowns. They are really idiots." He pointed at the redhead and a goofy looking man. "She's Jessica and he's Bill, you can call him Hader. The others are Isaiah, Andy, James, the other James you can call Ransone, Bill and Jay." He pointed at them while saying the names. "The kids are Finn, Wyatt, Chosen, Sophia, Jack, Jeremy, Jaeden and  Jackson." "It's a pleasure to know you all." You had stopped crying and were drying your tears. The rest of your day was incredible. They made you laugh and were super friendly to you. Hader was the funniest guy you ever met. When you went to get lunch, Andrés - that was his real name - paid your lunch, he insisted. After the fireworks, everyone headed to the parking lot. "Hey, message me when you get home okay?" Andrés said after stopping by your car. You gave him your phone so he could put his number in it. "I'll probably put you in our group chat." "That's really nice of you, Muschietti." "Drive safely, honey!" Barbara said opening up her window. "You too!" You got inside your car. That really was the happiest place on earth.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League Ending Explained: The Sequels and DCEU We Never Saw

This article contains Zack Snyder’s Justice League spoilers.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is a lot of movie. It’s four hours plus of superhero action with some heavy mythological overtones. And it’s ending isn’t even a single ending to this story…it’s multiple endings. And each of these multiple endings is meant to set up a host of spinoff movies and Justice League sequels that we will unfortunately never get to see!

We’ll consider the “main” ending of the film, the one that wraps up the initial story begun in 2013’s Man of Steel, to be the defeat of Steppenwolf. But from there, we get several epilogues, and that’s where things get even more complicated. There are no post-credits scenes in Zack Snyder’s Justice League because, well, it doesn’t need them, but the “additional endings” kind of serve the same purpose.

So let’s get started…

The Defeat of Steppenwolf

The key to defeating Steppenwolf actually comes much earlier in the movie when Barry is explaining to Bruce some of how his speed works, and his discovery of what he dubs the Speed Force. 

“When I approach the speed of light, crazy things happen to time, but when I do it I create massive electrical power.”  

It’s that “massive electrical power” that is ultimately used to help “wake” the Mother Box that’s used to resurrect Superman (who himself is, of course, a key to Steppenwolf’s defeat). Barry builds up enough of a head of steam to generate the necessary to spark the Mother Box and charge the chemical soup that brings Superman back to life.

With Steppenwolf in possession of all three Mother Boxes, he’s in position to bring about “Unity,” which grants him impossible destructive power, and which would allow Darkseid to easily access Earth and begin his campaign to attain the Anti-Life Equation. Since the Mother Boxes have already been joined, and “Unity” appears to be underway, Cyborg needs to “hack” into them (since some of his power and technology was derived from a Mother Box).

The only problem? Not enough power!

And that’s where Flash comes in. As Barry begins building up the speed necessary to generate the kind of power required for this, he’s hit by a lucky shot from a Parademon, delaying Cyborg’s ability to prevent Unity from happening. In the process, the Mother Boxes unleash a torrent of energy powerful enough to vaporize everything and everyone in its path (and possibly the entire world), including Wonder Woman, Cyborg, Aquaman, and even Superman. Barry witnesses this from afar and with only nanoseconds to act, decides to break his own rule about not surpassing the speed of light, for fear of the “crazy things that happen to time” he mentioned earlier in the film. 

Needless to say, Barry succeeds in his goal and seems to reverse time by the necessary few seconds as he approaches the Mother Boxes, reconstituting everyone, delaying the explosion long enough for him to give Cyborg the energy needed to hack the Mother Boxes, and stopping things in their tracks long enough for Aquaman, Superman, and Wonder Woman to send Steppenwolf back home… in pieces.

We’re going to come back to Barry in a minute, but let’s just take a moment here to talk about Steppenwolf’s boss.

Darkseid Will Return

Or… he would have returned if Zack Snyder’s original plan for multiple Justice League movies had come to pass. “When I made the film originally, it was part of a five-part trilogy,” the director recently told Vanity Fair. “There were two more episodes of the Justice League to be shot.”

Darkseid isn’t cowed witnessing Steppenwolf have the extraterrestrial crap beaten out of him by Superman, skewered by Aquaman, and decapitated by Wonder Woman. Instead he calmly tells DeSaad to “ready the armada, we’ll use the old ways,” indicating that he’s ready to just invade Earth the old-fashioned way again with a massive alien army and warships. 

Why he feels confident in doing this considering how it ended for him the last time is anyone’s guess, but the fact that he knows for sure that Anti-Life is here probably has something to do with it, along with the fact that he can use the Anti-Life Equation to control Superman, who just proved himself to be the most powerful champion in the galaxy.

In other words, the Justice League 3 (yes, three…we’ll get to Justice League 2 in a minute…I told you this would be out of order) that we’ll probably never see would have dealt with Darkseid’s second invasion of Earth and his clash with our heroes. What this means now is that the Knightmare sequence from Batman v Superman (and which is revisited in this film) wasn’t just a nightmare after all, but a vision of a possible future in which Darkseid is successful, at least to some degree.

Which brings us to…

Joker, Batman, Knightmare, and more…

In the not-too-distant future we see Batman, once again wearing his desert togs that we saw in his Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice nightmare. He’s joined by Cyborg, Flash (wearing that weird armored get-up that we saw when he visited Bruce with his “too soon?” warning about Lois Lane in BvS), Deathstroke, and Mera. Why this team?

Well, it turns out the vision Cyborg had during the resurrection of Superman (see? I told you it would keep coming back to that moment!) was what would happen if Darkseid was not only successful in his invasion, but in acquiring the Anti-Life Equation. We know from that vision that Wonder Woman is dead, Darkseid skewered Aquaman just as Aquaman skewered Steppenwolf, and Superman is… not a good guy anymore. Apparently, Darkseid vaporized Lois Lane with his Omega Beams and then used the Anti-Life Equation in Superman’s moment of weakness to bend him to his will.

This explains why Superman is “evil” in Batman’s original Knightmare vision from BvS, and explains the wrecked Hall of Justice, the dead Green Lantern, and more from Cyborg’s vision at the moment of his resurrection. Things are apparently so dire that even the Joker, the Clown Prince of Crime and an Agent of Chaos, has thrown in his lot with Batman, the Flash, and all the rest in an attempt to reverse time and save Lois Lane from being obliterated. Hence Joker asking Batman, “You need me to undo this world you created by letting her die. Poor Lois.”

Of course, Joker also hints that the only way to truly undo this is for Batman to ultimately sacrifice himself, and Snyder has indeed said that the plan was for Batman to die at Darkseid’s hands, in his final bid to save Lois. Batman getting fried by Darkseid was a key part of the climax to Grant Morrison’s excellent Final Crisis series, too, but that’s another matter entirely.

And if a ragtag band of heroes and villains fighting an alien invasion and an evil Superman isn’t out there enough for you, Snyder ALSO told Vanity Fair that Batman’s ultimate sacrifice would restore the timeline to where Lois Lane survived…but was pregnant with Bruce’s child. No, not a typo. And then the Justice League trilogy would end with: “Twenty years later, on the anniversary of [Batman’s] death, they take young Bruce Kent down to the Batcave and they say, ‘Your Uncle Bruce would’ve been proud if you did this…something like that.”

Anyway, with this weird potential future stuff out of the way, let’s talk about the more immediate implications of what happened in the ending there.

The Flash and Flashpoint

Barry comes to a realization as he sprints towards Unity that he can “make your own future/your own past/it’s all right now.” When moving at this speed and when he’s this deep in the Speed Force, he perceives time differently than we do.

More importantly, from a wider DCEU standpoint, this is absolutely the moment when Barry realizes that he could potentially change the past. Specifically, he probably wants to go back in time and prevent the murder of his mother, and thus keep his father out of jail. In other words, this is the first seed of what would have been (or will be?) the long-gestating and troubled The Flash solo movie, which will be based on the Flashpoint story.

In Flashpoint, Barry goes back in time, prevents his mother’s murder and…does NOT live happily ever after. Instead, this causes ripples in the timeline that lead to a very strange and unpleasant world, and Barry realizes that maybe he shouldn’t be doing things like that.

The current Flash movie plans (the film is now in the hands of director Andy Muschietti) probably involve Flashpoint in some capacity, since Barry is able to access the multiverse and meets Michael Keaton’s Batman from the Tim Burton movies. So Barry might not have just gone back in time a few seconds here in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, he may have accessed the DC Multiverse itself. That, of course, is another can of worms entirely.

Lex Luthor, Deathstroke, and Batman

Think of this as what would normally be a “mid-credits scene” and a tease for the Justice League 2 that we’ll never see. Lex Luthor escapes from Arkham Asylum (which is a weird place for Lex, but whatever) by using a fakeout move kind of similar to the one Gene Hackman’s Lex pulled in Superman II.

But when next we see Lex, he’s in the recruitment business. His first meeting is with Joe Manganiello as Slade Wilson, better known as Deathstroke. You might remember this scene from the Joss Whedon version of the film, but here it plays out differently. While here, as there, Lex is indeed looking to put together a team of supervillains, he’s a bit more specific here, revealing Batman’s true identity to Slade, who apparently has a grudge against the Dark Knight.

Deathstroke: The Most Versatile Villain in the DC Universe

This was supposed to be the premise of the Batman solo movie when Ben Affleck was still involved as both director and star, but that, like so many other DCEU projects, fell to pieces. It’s a shame, because after Affleck’s terrific performance as Batman in this, that really could have been cool. 

Lex earning Deathstroke’s loyalty here by doing him this little favor also would have helped set up Lex’s team-building efforts, which apparently would have paid off in Snyder’s planned Justice League 2.

Martian Manhunter

As we learned earlier in the film, Harry Lennix’s General Swanwick was actually J’onn J’onnz, the Martian Manhunter in disguise. Here, he finally reveals himself (in his true form no less) to the no-longer-xenophobic Bruce Wayne, who is now fully the hero we hoped he would be when he was introduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

It’s pretty self-explanatory stuff. Martian Manhunter tells Bruce Darkseid will come for the Anti-Life Equation, lets him know he’ll be around to help, and flies off. Bruce accepts this pretty readily, and we’re ready for a sequel, and for that “unite the seven” marketing prophecy to finally come true.

But while Lennix’s reveal as Martian Manhunter was always intended to be part of this film and Snyder’s DCEU in general, he wasn’t the superhero intended for this scene! Yes, just as Bruce wanted “room for more” at the Justice League headquarters table, this movie would have also introduced an eighth hero.

“We shot a version of this scene with Green Lantern, but the studio really fought me and said, ‘We really don’t want you to do Green Lantern,’” Snyder told Vanity Fair. “So I made a deal with them, and they let me do this [instead].”

The Green Lantern in question would have been John Stewart. But it turns out the studio has long intended for Stewart to be the center of their Green Lantern Corps movie, so according to Snyder, Martian Manhunter “was the compromise.”

Wait, did I say eight heroes? I meant nine!

Ryan Choi is The Atom

In case you were wondering, Ryan Choi, the STAR Labs scientist who works with Silas Stone throughout the film is indeed an important character from the comics. Choi is destined to become the Atom, the shrinking superhero who will one day become a member of the Justice League.

Here, we see him getting granted the position of “director of nanotechnology” for STAR Labs, a role which will certainly lead to some useful discoveries for him down the line. Hopefully someone decides to give Zheng Kai another shot at the role down the line.

It Chapter 2 (Spoilers!)

So, this clown just saw It Chapter 2 and I want to thank not only god, but also Jesus. 

Honestly, this film really reminds you that adult life with childhood traumas is the scariest thing by itself. And you don't need to hide it or try to forget about it. You need to become a warrior and fight it. And it also about broken childhood dreams, about that thing when you laying in your bed and thinking "What have I become?"

And believe all the rumors -- Bill Hader is astonishing in this movie. He is a comedic genius, so the timing and delivery of his jokes were amazing. When Richie says that he didn't write his own material, I died laughing (cause Bill Hader writes, acts and directs in "Barry" -- please, watch this show). Also, swearing Bill Hader is my new kink. But also, when Bill starts crying at the end in the water, I was not ready for this at all. I was gonna resurrect this fucking clown and then kill it myself again with my bare hands for what he did to Richie and Eddie. And I was definitely crying at this scene at the kissing bridge. His open, vulnerable, yet determined and caring face and gentle touch of the letters deserves all the Oscars, Grammys and Emmys in the world.

We won, Reddie is canon, you can rest now.

Some other notes:

-- Ben and Beverly are one of the very few hetero ships that I care about, so this is a double win for me. There scene with quoting "Your hair is winter fire..." was a perfect love confession for me. -- Bill desperately trying to protect little kid and Bill figuratively killing younger self to stop blaming himself for Georgie's death were his best scenes. -- In restaurant, when the shit begins, terrified Richie screams only Eddie's name of all the Losers. -- Stephen King's cameo -- 11/10. Him, mocking popular author for bad endings and being very rich is hilarious. -- I noticed Andy Muschietti cameo when Eddie was at the drugstore. -- The actress, who played Eddie's mom in the first movie, also played Eddie's wife in this movie. -- Xavier Dolan is hot, gay, sad and dead as always (and I love him for that).

things that i thought about in the other times i watched it chapter two but forgot and only decided to wrote it down on the sixth time watching it:

i hope there's a scene with eddie leaving myra on the deleted footage or on the supercut. although making the actress that made sonya portray myra as well was a smart move, i missed their argument and him leaving myra as a parallel to him leaving his mom. i dont think it was that clear that eddie was stuck in a cycle of abuse and, even though it's a bad thing, it's important for his character;

adult richie scratching his head after leaving the clubhouse because he probably got spiders on his hair was fucking precious;

still dont understand why they cut mike getting the bloody rock out of the movie. i was so lost the first time i watched it and then i rewatched the trailer and saw that scene of pennywise walking on the wall that wasnt on the movie and the disappointment just fell in. that scene is important, why the hell is not on the final cut?;

EDDIE AND BEN ARE SO FREAKING CUTE. ben's always protecting eddie and i did saw some people talking about some scenes but there was this one that my dumb brain just noticed this time and i almost lost it. when mike is about to open the floor door (???????? i dont even know how to call this in portuguese, im that Dumb™), ben automatically puts his whole arm in front of eddie and pushes him behind him. that was so soft my eyes got teary. eddie and ben in this whole movie is just too perfect to be true. love them, love their friendship, god bless jay ryan, pj and andy muschietti;

BOOK!MIKE FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH PENNYWISE AS AN EASTER EGG!!!!!!! I THink. im not sure. maybe it's just my desperate brain wanting connections between the movie and the book. but god i was so happy when i saw that. to be more specific, it's when bill is hallucinating and seeing the ritual and everything. when mike talks about its true form or something like that it just turns a big black bird that attacks a kid that kinda looks like young mike. i fucking LOST it. i was so happy. mike's and stan's first encounter with pennywise are my absolute favorite and they cut it from the first movie so seeing that small easter egg made my whole week;

LET'S TALK ABOUT BEN AND BEVERLY!!!!!!!!!! okay so first of all, jay ryan, i fucking love you, you made me love ben even more. a lot of people talked about how ben immediately knew something was wrong with bev so im not going that way. but!!! when he's trying to make bev talk, he goes after her, right? but he never touches her. when he comes in her way and they bump into each other he doesn't waste a second and puts his hands up to show he's not gonna hurt her, to show she's safe. bev instantly touches her wrists and looks at ben's hands and he keeps himself like that til she moves away. and then he keeps going after her but he never for a second tries to stop her physically. he wants to know what's wrong with her but he's giving her her space and respecting her and what she's been through. that's so meaningful for her. also, a line from that scene made me the happiest ever. ben saying "talk, just like we used to" made me all soft. "talk like we used to", ben and bev were close, they would talk about their lives, i know that's obvious but it's always good to say this: ben and bev were friends, they were family, they were important to each other, since the day they met. jumping to the blood and dirt scene, beverly was surrounded by the abusive people that haunted her from childhood to adulthood. when she was falling and almost drowning, she was scared and she was overwhelmed with the fake and toxic "love" she had to live with but then ben said he loved her, he gave her the love she deserved and she was able to stand her ground and say no to all that disturbing people and feelings she's been through wish i could say that for reddie haha ha h a wh ymust i hurt like t his

now it's more about the two movies put together than from chapter two alone. i can see why people think beverly was put into a damsel in distress situation but i don't agree that much. sometimes i feel like people think they ruined her character with this situation when it just made clear bev was everything but that. she wasn't waiting for them to rescue her, she fought back, she said she wasn't afraid. beverly was defenseless because it made her see the dead lights. but bev fought the entire time before that. and most importantly, bev saved the others much more than they saved her. and, again, i can see why people strongly think this is the case and i have no right to define your opinions as wrong or right. but i truly can only see as them saving a loser. she's their friend, their family, they got united because of her and even with the kiss I SAW YOU NOT MAKING RICHIE FLOAT AFTER SEEING THE DEAD LIGHTS JUST SO WE WOULDN'T HAVE THE REDDIE KISS WE DESERVE ANDY I SAW YOU (that to be honest felt kinda meaningless after they made her and bill kiss at the end), i can see why people think that, but i don't feel it's the case;

ben hanscom is the softest human alive. he getting all shy with the others saying he's hot, telling the others to let mike speak, going after bev cause he knows she isnt okay, being aware of her past and respecting her boundaries, saying bev wouldn't say those mean things to him, saying the losers are his real friends (that Hurt Me So Badly), going after richie, being all cute and happy because he thought he made richie stay, being the first one to ask mike if he's okay, taking care of eddie in the entire movie, him on the entire chinese place scene actually, and much more. ill probably gonna rant about him sometime soon but;

AND NOW LET ME TALK ABOUT MY BIRDBOY!!!!!!! okay, so. if the losers all met pennywise again after the summer's fight that means we can and MUST have stan bird watching and then encountering pennywise on the pipe, right???!!! AND, YOUKNOW, WEAKENING PENNYWISE ALL BY HIMSELF BECAUSE HE'S A POWERPUFF BOY AND DEFINITELY NOT THE WEAK ONE!!?!? we also didn't saw mike's but that's either connected to his token or a deleted footage so,,,,, ANDY PLEASE MAKE THE SUPERCUT HAPPEN, WE NEED STANLEY URIS BIRDWATCHING!!!!!!!

1. Captain Marvel

This movie was airforce propaganda but overall I kind of liked it. It was not the worst MCU film I’ve ever seen. It inspired me to catch up on the MCU so I knew what the hell was going on.

2. Avengers:  Endgame

I definitely popped for certain scenes but there was no lingering emotional substance. Which is fine. I wasn’t expecting to have my life changed by Avengers: Endgame.

3. Detective Pikachu

What did you expect. This is a movie in which there are live action humans and CGI pokemon. Now I’ve seen some real CGI travesties this year (see later in my list) I’m pretty kindly disposed towards it. But... good film and all, but remember Mr Mime?

4. Spider-Man: Far From Home

I have no memory of this film. I know I saw it. I remember seeing press where Tom Holland awkwardly flirted with Jake Gyllenhaal... so I assume he was in it? I don’t know. It vanished from my brain as soon as I left the cinema.

5. 47 Metres Down: Uncaged

When I went to see it, the lady at the ticket counter literally laughed when I said the movie title. I don’t know why. I mean, no one was seeing this film by accident were they? I wasn’t innocently expecting a better movie.

6. It Chapter Two

Speaking of CGI travesties. I mean, it wasn’t the worst of the year (that’s still to come), but smooth-faced anime de-aged Finn Wolfhard does kind of haunt me. Plus I lowkey need to fight Andy Muschietti in a pit for his crimes.

7. The Goldfinch

This was not a good year for Finn Wolfhard in film adaptations of books in which he portrays a teenage boy who is in love with his male best friend, in a way that sort of clumsily alters the dynamic of the relationship from the novel but fails at being decent gay rep. It’s not his fault. I don’t blame you, Finn.

8. Joker

I saw this film in a licensed cinema in a whole other city because I had some time to kill and the cocktails were pretty good.

9. Cats

I straight up brought this on myself.

It’s romantic, well done and super interesting! Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock looked so good together! I really loved this sci-fi love story.

Honestly, everything is absolutely pefect in this movie… like when Mr. Darcy always look’s like he’s about to throw up everytime Lizzie is around, how Mr. Bingley is an absolutely sunshine, how Jane it’s his perfect match, how Lizzie is perfecly sassy and smart… I, obviously, and I can not stress this enough: THE HAND FLEX!!! (and when Mr. Darcy cofesses his eternal love to Lizzie in the rain and them they fight and them they almost kiss… AMAZING CINEMA!)

I loved the movie and I can’t wait to finally find time to read the book too…

When the movie was over, I felt like crying of happines... I so proud o f brazilian cinema and how it gets better and bigger each year!!

The movie it’s okay until it gets on it’s last 15 to 10 minutes... then so much starts to happen and you just want to stop seeing it, but can’t because you want to know the ending of it, and it’s so scary and crazy... Really I totally get why lots of people are crazy about this one... SO SCARY!

Also, look out for the website they made for the three filmakers that “disapeared” ( AKA were killed by the Blair Witch), it’s so good and there’s a lot of more information that makes the movie even more scary.

Not ever close to be as great as the first one, it’s crazier, more things happen and you still feel crazy with the characters, but, it’s not as great. But it would be a great stanalone, if the first one did not existed.

This is a comedic MASTERPIECE and I CAN NOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! 

I love comedy movies, but I always expect to much of them... but this served me EVERYTHING that a good comedy should have to make me laugh until my breath runs out. LOVED IT!

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon are absolutely babes and so increadibly talented! 

The movie is a bit slow (maybe only if you not a particularly big Cash fan), but is great!

short answer: a little, but not really

long answer, under the cut. please keep in mind that this is just MY interpretation and if you WERE bothered or hurt by the portrayal of gay people in the IT movies i’m not saying you’re wrong, you’re perfectly within your rights to feel that way and i get where you’re coming from. remember that this is just, like, my opinion, man

so firstly i want to say that i’m not a book purist by any means, films and books are different mediums and changes have to be made to make a book work as a movie, so i don’t get too ruffled by changes, but one thing i’ve never liked is when a film version changes who lives or dies. i’ve never liked that Haldir dies in the LOTR movies and i refuse to see the film version of My Sister’s Keeper because they changed which sister dies in the end, thereby changing the meaning of the ENTIRE STORY. so….i don’t like when movies change which character dies. i think someone needs to die in that scene in IT, and i actually think (you’re free to disagree) that that is a solid conclusion for eddie’s story arc. the only other character it could make sense to kill off at that point in the story is MAYBE bill, and that just wasn’t gonna happen 

anyway, my next point is that whether or not this was the right decision (and i don’t think it was fwiw) eddie isn’t canonically gay in any version of this story. richie is, in It Ch2, but eddie is still left up to interpretation. it’s hard for me to view a version of this story where i DON’T interpret eddie as gay, but the fact remains that the subtext in the novel was unintentional by Stephen King, and Andy Muschietti chose, in the films, to leave it ambiguous. like i said, it’s pretty clear TO ME that eddie is gay, but many, many people have read It and had different interpretations. so on that note i’m not even sure this QUALIFIES as bury your gays.

i do think eddie is the most blatantly queer-coded character in the book, fwiw, for a multitude of reasons. i’m surprised richie is the character they chose to make Canonically Gay - though i wonder if it’s bc richie would feel less stereotypical?

like….do i WISH richie and eddie could be together? yeah, i do! at the same time, though, i see a lot of people thumping on about how richie is the only character to get an unhappy ending and i have a lot of problems with that. i mean, are we gonna pretend the rest of the losers didn’t love eddie?? bullshit. they did. they’re all grieving for him, and for stan, who’s still dead btw people seem to forget about that? 

i think people tie richie’s eventual happiness too much to eddie. it’s true that richie’s adult life has been largely unhappy, but his childhood wasn’t. he dealt with bullying, yes, he dealt with a killer clown, but of the Losers, he and stan probably had the happiest home lives. (in the book i think richie’s dad is like, a nice dentist or something like that.) i think people are undermining the amount of happiness truly accepting oneself can bring, and richie has reached that point by the end of It Ch2. and then i hear people complaining that richie can never find happiness now because eddie, his soulmate, is dead? to which i say….let’s be realistic here. again, i wish eddie and richie could be together but to say that a 40-year-old man’s soulmate is the person he had a crush on when he was 13, and the only way he can be happy is if he can be with him….i think that’s not only unrealistic but also damaging. there’s a whole world out there, kids, and it’s not going to end if you don’t get to marry your first crush. richie will be okay - and hell, eddie would be FURIOUS with him if he put his whole life on hold just because he’s dead.

i’ve also seen arguments that richie would just be depressed and want to die after the events of It Ch2, including and mostly because of eddie’s death, and i just don’t think that’s true either. i think right after eddie died there’s probably a moment in richie’s head that’s like “oh my god i wanna die i wanna lie down right here and die with him” but, like, fleeting. richie’s entire THING is how badly he wants to live. his fight with bill in the first movie is because bill keeps putting the Losers in danger and richie is like FUCK YOU BILL I DON’T WANNA DIE. he tries to leave derry in ch2 because this is too dangerous and he doesn’t want to die. richie simply does not want to die. i would feel FAR more cheated and wronged if richie died than eddie. 

which, btw, brings me to why i think eddie’s death was an adequate way to end his arc which i know is probably the MOST controversial thing i would ever say so skip this paragraph if you don’t wanna hear about that. it’s not that i’m not sad that eddie dies, i AM, it’s TERRIBLY sad, but all the same, didn’t eddie have a terribly sad life? he grew up under the thumb of this overbearing mother who convinced him he was weak and sickly, and grew up to marry a woman much like her. (btw - based on the book i don’t think eddie’s wife myra is actually the awful abuser a lot of people portray her as, though the movie’s portrayal contributes to that. i think myra is a very anxious, needy woman who married a man who made those traits worse, whose own anxious and hypochondriac tendencies were worsened by being married to her. they’re just very very wrong for each other and that doesn’t make myra a villain.) i think eddie’s ending was him finally proving to himself just how brave he really is, that he’s not weak or too sensitive, or any of the things he’s always been told he is. eddie dies a hero’s death and for his character, for his arc, that’s fitting. in the book, he’s not even particularly upset. Not bad, he would begin. This is not bad at all (King 1086). i don’t mean to say there was no hope for eddie. not at all. he could have lived, he could have gotten out of his marriage and channeled his newfound courage and bravery into living a new life….but if he has to die, and i think someone should in this story, that’s the way to go. hero. 

on the whole, i thought what IT Ch2 did in terms of sexuality was….really great. anybody who follows me knows that horror is my favorite genre, but i have always understood that it’s not a genre that is particularly friendly towards any marginalized group, whether that’s by race, gender, or sexuality. i felt SEEN by It Ch2, and i felt like these stories mattered to the filmmakers. at the end of the day, richie lived, and he’s going to KEEP ON living, and that’s important

Sjsjsjs i dont wanna get my hopes up about reddie being explicit on the movie (they are canon on the books everyone can fight me the subcontext is STRONG). I honestly was dead set believing we wouldn’t even get an interaction of reddie outside group conversations, but aaaah those leaks caught me off guard!! Now I feel like romantic Reddie is a huge possibility especially considering that instead of the OG time its 2017 so is so much more acceptable and out there.

I’m honestly not sure where this apparently common ‘Richie and Eddie will never interact again’ assumption came from. Of course they’re going to interact a lot and at the very least continue the same relationship they had in the first movie. The entire narrative flow of IT relies on repetition, patterns and cycles, and parallel events/characters. Andy Muschietti knows that because he’s loved this book for decades and is a very thoughtful filmmaker. Bill Hader and James Ransone are also big Stephen King fans from childhood, love the story, and personally relate to their characters. There was never a possibility that such an important dynamic would be left out.

But yeah, please be careful about starting to expect explicitly romantic Reddie. Speculate and hope for a pleasant surprise if it does happen, but try not to set yourself up to be disappointed if there is less between them than you want there to be.

New Fiction 2019 - September

Ready or Not dir. Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett (2019)

I’ve played many tabletop games these past few years, in addition to the usual assortment of video games. What’s different about tabletop is I like playing with people who take the games too seriously. They’re easily provoked, in a fun sort of way. I don’t take the games seriously because I have no intention of winning. Who needs that stress? Well this movie here, it’s an entire movie of people who take games too seriously. I don’t know that I’d enjoy playing with them, but it’s fun to see them provoked and rebuked.

It dir. Andy Muschietti (2017)

Cosmic clown horror is something a kid would take seriously. It’d provide a good distraction from the real horror of parents and neighbors and other shitty kids. I can get behind that.

It Chapter Two dir. Andy Muschietti (2019)

This one got all the roles wrong. The one who stayed in town left, and the ones who should’ve been failures were all successful. I’m not as interested in a bunch of adults fighting literal demon clowns as I am in them fighting their buried trauma.

Hustlers dir. Lorene Scafaria (2019)

Good performances by all involved, and it’s always nice to see powerful shitheads get fucked. Plus I always wanna see Constance Wu in more things.

Rambo: Last Blood dir. Adrian Grunberg (2019)

I haven’t watched more than one or two of these, but this latest Rambo movie is an absolute waste of our time.

Ad Astra dir. James Gray (2019)

There’ve been more than a few space movies these last few years. It’s the depiction of a cold and lifeless space that I appreciate the most. This movie is like a blend of 2001: A Space Odyssey and Event Horizon in its visuals and the exploration of pushing the limits of our scientific inquiry. That’s the part I like. I don’t like another adventure in being a dude in a dude’s world.

Penny Dreadful (2014-2016)

The series had a lot of potential and I liked the first couple of seasons, but the third season goes so sideways that you can’t believe it’s meant to end that way. It’s a bummer of a finale. They’re planning a new series in Los Angeles and that’s exciting for me. LA is a good place for horror.

The Haunting of Hill House (2018)

I don’t know what to say. It’s a great series and one of the best things I’ve seen this year. The series is also incredibly sad. It’s quite different in tone and scope than the other horror series I’ve watched recently. It takes the human toll of these experiences more seriously.

The Good Place - Season 4 (2018)

This show is confirmed to end with the upcoming season 5, which feels perfect. These characters’ flaws have been laid bare and the final season looks like it’ll test the lessons they’re meant to have learned. You know, you just don’t wanna stretch out a good thing for too long.

Disenchantment - Part 2 (2019)

I like the approach here. They’re going all in on arcs between each part of the series, something these creators previously tried with Futurama. It’s also far less episodes than typical broadcast television requires, which is much appreciated. And, you know, it’s funny. The jokes-per-minute can’t compare to Groening’s earlier TV projects but it’s a welcome light touch.

American Horror Story: Apocalypse (2018)

I looked up a ranking of American Horror Story seasons from worst to best and this one was somehow not the worst. It’s a pile of threads thrown together into a ball. When discussing the current season, someone told me it’s started off well. That was the case with Apocalypse as well, then it devolves into too much camp and too intricate connections between characters. I’d recommend never watching it.
