Every Judy Movie-#9
Tumblr media
Way, way back in High School I set out to watch every single one of Judy Garland’s movies. Several I’ve rewatched many times since, others I had no desire to see again. Now, in honor of the centennial of her birth, I thought I’d do something with this knowledge and make a quick write up of my thoughts on all of them...
Title: Andy Hardy Meets Debutante
Release Year: 1940
Plot Summary: The Hardy’s take a trip to New York City, where Andy tries to get a photo with a debutante he’d told his friends back home he was dating, even though they’ve never met. Garland is back as Betsy Booth, daughter of a big Broadway star and an aspiring singer herself, she spends most of the movie pining after Andy before solving all his problems for him.
Thoughts: There’s not much you can say about this movie that I didn’t already say about previous Hardy movie. Garland’s has a couple nice songs, her performance of the ballad “Alone” is the movie’s highlight. Her character initially sings the song in a bid to get Andy’s attention, so Garland sings the first verse for comedic effect, emphasizing Betsy’s exasperation at Andy’s obliviousness. When he fails to take the hint and rushes out, she seamlessly transitions to a more somber, dejected tone. It displays her range, equally comfortable singing for comedic or emotional effect, and demonstrates how easily she remains in character even when she’s singing, something a lot of musical stars struggle with.
