Presence (15): A Ghost-Eye-View of a Slowly Fragmenting Family.
One Mann's Movies FIlm Review of "Presence". 'BE' the ghost in Stephen Soderburgh's clever (if not wholly successful) spooky experiment. 3/5.
A One Mann’s Movies review of “Presence” (2025). “Presence” – no, not a Christmas film (LOL!) This is the latest film from the prolific stable of Steven Soderbergh and it’s a creepy, rather than scary, ghost story with a twist. Bob the Movie Man Rating: “Presence” Plot Summary: A spirit roams the empty rooms of a suburban house watching as the Sullivan family move into it. Most seem oblivious…

Lockerbie: A Search for Truth (Miniseries Review) | A Father's Relentless Pursuit: The Heartbreaking Truth Behind Lockerbie
A gut-wrenching exploration of truth, justice, and grief, Lockerbie: A Search for Truth is a must-watch. Colin Firth delivers a haunting performance as a father fighting for answers in the wake of tragedy. #Lockerbie #ColinFirth #MiniseriesReview
As someone who used to stay up watching crash investigation shows whenever my insomnia hit, I don’t think I knew about Lockerbie. Somehow the Pan Am Flight 103 tragedy in 1988 slipped under my radar. So I went in fresh and this miniseries hit me like a freight train. From the brutal, gut-wrenching pilot to the poignant finale, Lockerbie: A Search for Truth is a gripping and devastating…

THINGS THAT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW ABOUT MY FELLOW WRITERS
this is a super fun tag prompt list, thanks @orangekittyenergy
tagging: @sofancydancy and @senualothbrok
Right, let's see how this goes.
Last book I read: Pride and Prejudice. Had never read it before but the whole Tim Downie cameo got me doing it. Then watched the BBC series with a friend and we swooned something major over Colin Firth. I've picked up some other books since then but just haven't found the motivation to get through them. Looking at Dark Tower book 5 as well for the last year...
Greatest literary inspiration: I'm honestly not sure. My partner is the real reader of the two of us. I've enjoyed Dark Tower, The Witcher Series (Honestly still in love with Cahir from them), and Leaves of Grass is my poetry go-to. But inspiration, going to be silly but the Hardcore series by Andy Remic (RIP), is such a great series of books. They're not the most literary genius type books but the action is cool, I love the characters. They make me want to write cool shit too.
Things in my current fandom I want to read but I don't want to write:
Smut. Honestly, my abilities with writing smut are limited. I have no patience for flowery language (yeah I write poetry but I know what I mean.) but it means when it comes to writing my own smut it is very matter-of-fact and lacks what I'm looking for. I'm also very picky about my smut due to an annoying logical brain. If you say someone moves their arm and then they move something else I see that and if I can't follow it directly I'm just going to put it down.
You can recognise my writing by:
Lots of short prose-type sentences. I like the effect of repetition and I especially like writing in a more personal talking type way. I especially love to monologue so if anyone does recognise my writing it's probably from these things. I especially love writing anything angst, it's so therapeutic and I love being able to draw out emotions from other people. I can do this with sweet fluff stuff too but angst really is more enjoyable.
My most controversial take ( current fandom):
I hate the word folds. (Not fandom relations but still.) Makes me think of a packed ham sandwich.
Fandom-related though - Astarion fans can get pretty feral over their views of his character. I get it, Gale fans are the same but I've left groups over the rabidness.
Current writing mood (10 – super motivated and churning out words like crazy, 0 – in a complete rut): Currently about a 4 but it can vary depending on the hour and the inspiration. I completed the Nana story and now feel a little lost as to what the next project will be. Ideas are escaping me.
Top three favourite tropes: The whole "enemy to lovers" thing. I mean this in a 2 people who argue and fall in love, not as in the real enemies to lovers.
Star-crossed lovers, especially if they really are both doomed. Astarion/Karlach if she is going to burn up. I love that tragic acceptance. Give me more of that.
I like a loveable rogue too. Hook from OUAT.
Share a random frustration: AU fiction losing characterisations. Once your fiction hits a point where you could replace the characters with any other from any other series I'm going to stop reading it. Great, you want X to be sub, but if he wouldn't actually act that way in canon, why are you even using him as a character? It's AU, fine but then make it OC or use another fandom. Don't force me to read through 13 chapters of semi-ok stuff just to destroy the characters so you can fulfil the soap opera-esque drama that gets you the hits. I get it's difficult but this is my pet peeve. Rant over...

9 favorite movies of 2023! (I assume we are talking about movies I watched in 2023, not films released in 2023 because I only have one of those)
tagged by bestie @snugsunresplendence
in order in which I watched them:
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999) Teen romantic comedy about a young lesbian girl sent to conversion camp. Funny, sad, sweet, inspiring, sort of wish there were a lot more films like this because it warmed my little heart.
Barbie (2023) Everything that could be said about this film has already been said because people wouldn't shut up about it for months. For my two cents, I thought it was very well made and the script was good.
Women On the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (1988) One of Almodovar's finest, it is hilarious but also avant-garde, dramatic (the way a soap opera is dramatic) but also very real and it's just beautiful to watch.
Fever Pitch (1997) Colin Firth stars in this very British story written by Nick Hornby, about a man who really likes his favourite football team. It's funny, romantic, rings very real and also Colin Firth plays working class background remarkably well.
Underworld (2003) Dark, gritty, fun. Vampires, werewolves, guns. Action-packed, satisfying level of lore, good performances. Michael Sheen.
Heartlands (2002) Heartwarming, sweet, inspiring, it's a road movie about a man who rides his moped all the way to the big city to win back his wife and suddenly realizes how big and wonderful the world is. Michael Sheen.
Music Within (2007) Based on the real story of how veteran Richard Pimentel became a disabled rights activist and helped pass the Americans with Disabilities Act. Inspiring, funny, occasionally heartbreaking. Michael Sheen (actually steals the show as Art Honeyman).
7 Days In Hell (2015) Quite possibly THE funniest thing I watched in 2023. Mockumentary about two fictional tennis players (played by Andy Samberg and Kit Harrington), playing a match that lasts a whole week. There is not much to be said here, except that it was HILARIOUS. Michael Sheen (also steals the show for me).
Beautiful Boy (2010) Not to be confused by the 2018 film of the same name. This one is about a couple whose son has committed a mass shooting and then killed himself. It completely avoids any sort of sensationalism. The most dramatic moments happen off-screen. It is a study in the cruelty of time and how life has to go on, even in the face of great tragedy. I couldn't stop crying in the end. Michael Sheen.
TAGGING: @gothic-goon , @luuu37 , @queenlovett , @ineffableloverboy, @oceanwithinsblog (as usual: no pressure)

sequels of blockbuster movies that took a level in ridiculousness which only made them better
the mummy returns: aka the cinematic debut of dwayne 'the rock' johnson where he's actually credited as the rock playing the scorpian king. also the one where rachel weisz fights the mummy's hot girlfriend.
charlie's angels: full throttle: been a while since i watched the first one all the way but i feel like it took itself a bit more seriously and didn't have as much juvenile sexual innuendo
national treasure: book of secrets: the original already played fast and loose with history but left enough facts for teenagers and other dumb people to be impressed by the knowledge of nicolas cage's character, benjamin franklin gates. with the sequel, most of the general audience cannot be fooled by the city of gold being hidden under mt. rushmore and queen victoria having something to do with a clue to the treasure. the craziness of the plot just brings to mind andy samberg on snl doing an impression of nic cage's character saying 'i'm gonna impregnate the statue of liberty.'
mamma mia! here we go again: this movie doesn't even pretend to have much of plot or a reason for each song. cher is there! (despite being only a few years older than meryl streep and not matching the previous movie's one line about donna's mother at all) and a guy at the hotel turns out to be her long-lost ex-lover! he's named fernando, just so they can sing a duet of the ABBA song fernanado. is meryl streep in this movie or not? don't worry your pretty little head about it, just enjoy colin firth dancing and lily james being cute.
