Bronzed by the Guild

A while ago I joined the Guild of Photographers and I've been entering their Image of the Month competition to see how my photos measure up to some pretty tough competition. Last months set earnt me 3 Bronze awards (one of them a High Bronze - one or two points away from Silver, damnit!). I think there's only one IOM left to enter this year, but I have my sights firmly on a silver and a gold for next year. I've got a lot of work ahead of me..

And the Award Goes To...

Soyoun never thought that a rotational group such as themselves would be loved enough to be in contention for Rookie of the Year. Maybe she should have expected it, but there were so many amazing rookie girl groups who also made their debut. Soyoun just didn’t want to assume anything. After all, the less she expected, the less she was disappointed.

They all worked hard, Soyoun thinks to herself as she politely claps for all the other rookie girl groups who were also nominated. It’s easy to maintain a bright expression on her face. After all, this is exciting for all of them. Win or lose, they have made it this far. Half of Soyoun dares to hope. It’s difficult not to once they hear their names being called. It makes their chances of actually taking home that trophy even more real.

And then, the presenter finally calls it. “Legacy Girls!” Despite all the applause around them, Soyoun smiles and blinks as she takes it all in. They have just won their first award... This means that they did something right in the last six months since they made their debut. It takes the someone next to her prodding her to get a move on toward the stage. She makes a mental note to thank them for it later. It is only at that moment when she realizes that “Holy shit. This is for real.” She snaps out of her stupor as she walks on stage with a bright smile, making sure to bow to the seniors and other artists she passes along the way.

When she first got into Legacy all those years ago, she had always expected to cry when she got her first award. However, to her surprise, there are no tears falling. Instead, all she feels is this bubble of happiness in her chest that she needs to release soon. Some girls are smiling through their tears, while others are too incoherent to speak. Soyoun is handed the mic once the other girls are done giving their speeches. 

“It's an honor to receive this award. Thank you to CEO Park Jeongan, teachers Kim Hyuncheol, Lee Iseul, Roe Kangdae, and our other teachers and coaches, all the stylists, hairstylists, road managers, and the rest of the staff who made this possible. Thank you to our families, friends, and fans who supported us all the way." Soyoun says in Korean.  

She then switches to Japanese as she says, “It's been quite a start, and we hope you will stick with us as we continue to become Legacy Girls you will all be proud of. Thank you so much! I love you. Skrrrt skrrrt!”  

It is only hours later, when they're done taking photos with the trophy, that Soyoun allows herself to cry. She has given up several opportunities and other dreams to make it to this point. This is only the beginning, and she hopes this means better things are coming their way.
