Overwatch lore is so funny. “Many humans refuse to recognize omnics as people and there are several maps that include graffiti stating that omnics do not deserve equality or basic rights. Separately, scientists made Echo: a sentient omnic with limited decision-making abilities (and possibly limited emotional capability).” Or, in other words, “Humans are racist about omnics who can think, so scientists made a new omnic who can also think, but not too much.” This is never acknowledged outside of the cause-effect origin story. No one mentions how that’s a little messed up, actually. 

Overwatch has made a lot of art stating that we should be on the omnics’ side and hope for a better future for them, and then they give a borderline-mystical shine to Echo because she’s an advancement in science and her mere existence is Good… And this is nothing against Echo, I love Echo. But narratively and thematically, it doesn’t make sense.
