"I told you I'd share my ticket. I never planned on sharing my heart. maybe I could get lucky twice today." - Charlie
Charlie Lang (Nicolas Cage), a kind-hearted New York cop, promises to share his lottery winnings with a struggling waitress, Yvonne (Bridget Fonda), if his ticket wins. wen the unthinkable happens, he keeps his word. however, the newfound fortune brings complications, including Charlie's greedy wife, Muriel (Rosie Perez), and the challenges of sudden wealth.
read my review below (may contain spoilers):
watched January 7th, 2024 on netflix
when I think of Nicolas Cage, I immediately picture National Treasure or other action-packed movies. seeing him in a romantic comedy feels a bit odd, like watching a lion act like a cat. but, surprisingly, he does a great job here. Cage plays Charlie, a calm, collected, and warm-hearted cop. he’s not the action hero I’m used to, but he’s still very likeable. watching him handle this role makes me think he should do rom-coms more often. Bridget Fonda is another reason I was drawn to this movie. I’m a big fan of hers, and her character Yvonne is sweet and relatable. together, she and Cage have a charming chemistry that works, even if they’re an odd couple at first glance. their connection is cute and believable, even though the movie doesn’t give much time to develop their relationship fully. I wish there were more scenes showing how they grow closer; it feels rushed.
the storyline itself is a mix of heart-warming and frustrating moments. the idea of sharing lottery winnings with a stranger is such a kind and hopeful gesture, and it makes me wish someone would do that for me someday ahaha! but the movie gets sidetracked by unnecessary scenes that don’t add much to the story. at the same time, the relationship between Charlie and Yvonne, which should be the focus, feels like it’s crammed into the last part. I also feel mixed about the balance of comedy and drama. the greedy wife, Muriel, adds tension and some humour, but her scenes sometimes feel too exaggerated. I know it’s meant to show the contrast between her and Charlie’s kindness, but it comes off as cartoonish at times. I guess it’s part of the charm, but it didn’t fully work for me. even with its flaws, the movie has moments that touched me. Charlie’s generosity and optimism make me believe in the goodness of people. it’s a feel-good story at its core, even if the execution isn’t perfect. the ending is sweet and leaves me satisfied, which makes up for the uneven pacing.
final verdict: I think it was okay/watchable
maturity rating: 13+ genre: rom com, drama duration: 1h 41m (101 mins) country of origin: USA language: English screenplay: Jane Anderson major cast: Nicolas Cage, Bridget Fonda, Rosie Ferez, Isaac Hayes

'Blazing Saddles' Movie and 4K Review
The following review was written by Ultimate Rabbit correspondent, Tony Farinella. When it comes to comedy, it’s all a matter of opinion. Comedy, even more than film criticism, is subjective. For example, I’m not an Adam Sandler fan and I find his films terribly unfunny, but there is a reason why his films keep getting released by studios. There is really no right or wrong when it comes to…
