‘ÇEMÊ DIKELE’ YÊ LI AMAZONAN ÇI BIXE NAVA XWE DIKUJE
Tumblr media
Nivîs: Simon Worrall | Wêne: Andres Ruzo  Çemekî ku di kurahiya Amazonan de dikele, serpêhatiyan veduguherîne rastiyê. Li gorî baweriyên herêmî Çemê ku dikele devereke wisa ye ku xwediyê hêzeke nuwaze ya spîrîtuel e. Di wêneyî de şamanek ji Rihê Dûxanê re klaman distrê ku ew bawer dikin ev rih diayên kevir, daristan û hemû afirîdeyan digihînin Yezdan. Wekî çîrokeke Jules Verne ye: Çemekî wisa ye ku wekî ku ji navenda Cîhanê dizê, dikele û hemû zindiyên ku dikevin nav wî jî dikuje. Kaşifekî ciwan ê National Geographicê Andrés Ruzo cara ewil ev çem ji kalikê xwe bihîstiye. Ruzo dema dibe jeofizîkîst biryarê dide ku li vê çîrokê bikole bê ka rast e an zanist derbarê vê de çi dibêje. Di pirtûka xwe ya bi navê The Boiling River: Adventure and Discovery in the Amazon (Çemê Dikele: li Amazonan Kişf û Macera) yê de dikeve nav daristanên baranê yên Perûyê û dide pey vê nepenê. Ruzo li mala xwe ya li Dallasê ji me re behsa lêkolînên xwe dike: Tişta ku dibe sedem ev çem hemû tiştî bikuje, çima hin şîrketên neftê kêrî daristanê tên û çima ewqas girîng e ku qada derdora Çemê Dikele were parastin. Çemê Dikele di nav rastiyên zanistî û efsanewî de dimîne. Tişta ku bala te kişand û te li ser vê çîrokê lêkolîn kirin çi bû? Min ev çîrok cara ewil li Lîmayê dema ez zarok bûm min ji kalikê xwe parçeyekî winda yê efsaneya bajêr ê zêrîn ê li Amazonan bihîstibû. Piştî demeke dirêj dema min doktoraya jeofîzîkê dikir ez li ser hûrguliyan sekinîm. Read the full article

Mayantuyacu River, Peru
A mysterious, four-mile long river, deep in the heart of the Amazon, is so hot that it boils. The river has long been a legend in Peru, but when geoscientist Andrés Ruzo’s heard about it, he thought such a phenomenon couldn’t possibly exist because the Amazon basin is far from volcanic activity. The river boils because of fault-fed hot springs. Parts of the river are so hot that any animals that falls in boils instantly.

Explanation of illustrations and sketches
Tumblr media
I started to work on the illustrations for my project immediately after completing the analysis of Andrés Ruzo’s talk and presentation. After thinking about each paragraph and verse, ideas for images for the selected text started appearing in my head. I wanted to keep friendliness and a range of different colors in them, but also leave space for colors typical of the Amazon Jungle- blue colors, greens, turquoises, colors of ground, sand or stones.
Tumblr media
I made the first sketches with a pencil. I found all the inspiration for drawing on the internet. I have here the thoughts of Andres himself, historical figures, landscapes or the very systems of the human body and anotomy. Because in the majority of illustrations, I invented the emotions and positions of the characters and I drew them myself.
To perform my illustrations for the first time, from the very beginning I decided to use computer techniques. I made my small paintings in the Adobe Photoshop program, but before that I made accurate pencil sketches, later I created outlines using magelines and markers.
Tumblr media
I wanted my illustrations to have a good relationship with the text in the final edition. Fonts, their size and layout have been created at the very beginning of my tutorials. Whole spreads and page layouts were created before the illustrations. This allowed me to concentrate on the matter of the important and at the same time my Achilles' heel- typography.
I hope that the end result will be satisfactory for me as well as for lecturers. Creating this type of edition gave me a lot of satisfaction and made me learn a lot.

Inspiration and Interests in my design theme/ style
For my visual theme, I reviewed back to my findings from studying Andres Ruzo’s talk. I wanted to mimic that passion and human touch that he shared through his speech. For this I remembered a few childhood books that I still had which shared that feeling. Those were books that were presented in the form of a character’s diary. As a reader, I remember that the books made me feel like I was in the story alongside the character.
I then took these books as inspiration to layout the speech in a ‘notebook’ theme. I studied some elements that I could use from my own notebooks.

Visual Communication in Context 1. Editorial Design.
Research: Geothermal colours/ heat maps.
I am going to be creating another image to feature in the editorial spreads. I’ve decided that the image that I create will relate to the geothermal colours that  Andres Ruzo talks about in his ‘The boiling river of the Amazon TED Talk. In order to gain some visual inspiration for this, I have researched into geothermal colours and heat maps.
The websites below are two of the websites that I looked at during my research into geothermal colours and heat maps. I found these useful in finding out exactly what geothermal colours and heat maps are.
https://www.gns.cri.nz/Home/Learning/Science-Topics/Geothermal-Ecosystems/Location-Location-Location
https://www.hotjar.com/heatmaps/

My research has influenced me to create an image that has lots of reds, greens, yellow and purples in it.

Visual Communication in Context 1 : TED Talk Editorial Design.
We have been briefed for our new project to select one of ten TED talks supplied by our tutors. Each TED talk is very interesting in its own way and has some great ideas and philosophy. I watched all 10 of the videos at least twice to pick the right one for me.
Natalie Panek: Lets clean up the space junk orbiting Earth
Chuck Nice: A funny look at the unintended consequences of technology
Andrew Fitzgerald: Adventures in Twitter fiction
Stephen Petranek: Your kids might live on Mars
Andres Ruzo: The boiling river in the Amazon
Celeste Headlee: 10 ways to have a better conversation
Amy Herman: A lesson in looking
Barton Seaver: Sustainable seafood? Let’s get smart
Micheal Pawlyn: Using natures genius in architecture
Alexander Belcredi: How a long forgotten virus could solve the antibiotics crisis
We will need to visualise the TED talk through a printed document like a magazine article , where we will consider typographic hierarchies such as sub heads, pull out quotes , image captions etc...
After much examination of the videos, I have chosen to focus on Stephen Petraneks “How your kids might live on mars”. This subject caught my attention quickly and I was engaged in what he was saying and feel I can improve on how I can visualise his words and ideas. This is a very exciting new project and I can’t wait to get researching and developing.

PREPARATION FOR ANDRES RUZO'S PRESENTATION ANALYSIS
My first steps in starting work on the new project consisted in a thorough analysis of the "The Boiling River" presentation. I stumbled into the text not only in terms of the issue itself and how I can illustrate them interestingly, but also in terms of Andres himself.
I have listened to his TED Talk many times to notice his expression, tone of voice, his movements and also to create illustrations that will best convey his message and attitude.
That is why I decided to create illustrations about typography, which will be a friendly and warm state and person of Ruzo, but also a mystical and interesting world of the Amazon Jungle and South America. The issue of shamanism and mystery was also included in the game, and the idea behind this tradition was, for example, in clothes and their colors, also creating appropriate graphic layout.
In addition, after analyzing the text I started to create sketches of spreads and entire page layouts to check which option suits best the presented topic. I was inspired by books from the library and my favorite magazines from the world of art and design.
All my thoughts, ideas, important elements and interesting visions are saved on the previously printed Ruzo’s presentation (and text) from the TED Talk Show.

Editorial Project: This has already been recorded in my process book but I want to keep in my blog as well for convenient access and self review.
To begin this project, I begin analysing the different speeches provided to us. From there, I narrowed down my choices and ultimately selected The Boiling River of the Amazon by Andres Ruzo. I think I was attracted to his speech because of the enthusiasm he expressed throughout his talk. As you can see above, I then dwelled deeper to understand his talk and how he expresses himself. I highlighted pauses, hand motions and more.

Visual Communication in Context 1. Editorial Design.
Final outcome.
Here is the final outcome for my editorial piece. My design objectives for these spreads were to create an editorial piece that was colourful, had a sense of authenticity about it and visually communicated the story of the boiling river of the Amazon TED Talk.
In order to achieve my design aims and objectives, I made several changes to the design of these spreads. These include:
Correcting leading mistakes in the body text.
Increasing leading sizes in the subheadings.
Moving the ‘Andres Ruzo’ text closer to the title of the editorial piece.(First spread).
Adding page numbers.
Moving the quote to the right-hand page on the second spread.
Adjusting the placement of the snake so that it’s tongue is pointing down towards the main body text.
Adding a new image to the first spread that works well with the rest of the imagery.
I have taken away the photographic images to create image consistency.
Smoothing out the edges of the illustration of the frog on the 4th spread.
