Winners announced for the 2019 Eisner Awards

The winners were announced last night for the 2019 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards.

Tom King and Mitch Gerads, partners on the Mister Miracle series from DC, took home five awards between them. John Allison’s Giant Days and The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang also took home multiple awards.

The Eisner Awards also inducted 10 people into the Hall of Fame last night: the judges chose Jim Aparo, June Tarpé Mills, Dave Stevens and Morrie Turner, while voters chose José Luis García-López, Jenette Kahn, Paul Levitz, Wendy and Richard Pini, and Bill Sienkiewicz to join the class of 2019.

Other awards given out last night included the The Bill Finger Excellence In Comic Book Writing Award, which was presented to Mike Friedrich and the late E. Nelson Bridwell, and the Russ Manning Most Promising Newcomer Award, which went to Lorena Alvarez.

The 2019 recipients of the Bob Clampett Humanitarian Award were Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez, for his work on Ricanstruction: Reminiscing & Rebuilding Puerto Rico, and comic artist Tula Lotay, AKA Lisa Wood, for creating the UK-based Thought Bubble Festival. And La Revisteria Comics in Argentina won the Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award.

Trapped, hunted by Dire Wraiths, the astronauts find themselves wishing that help weren't over two-hundred thousand miles away. A Wraith invasion of Earth is looming and only the most isolated men in human history stand in their way. Plus! The connected ROM back-up with art by Guy Dorian Sr. and ROM legend Sal Buscema continues here! I love this concept and how we see that executed here. The idea that Chris presented last issue and continues to explore here makes my heart go pitter patter in all the best ways. I love that the Moon Landing was and wasn't faked all because of what we see happening within these pages. There is a sheer genius at work here and I kid you not this is the stuff conspiracy theorists live for. Also this really isn't about the earthlings who are on the Moon and trying to inspire mankind to be their best, nope this is about the Wraiths. I absolutely thrilled by that as well since we have only seen them as an adversary of ROM the Spaceknight. We have seen glimpses of their cunning, planning and tenacity but this is Chris giving them a real spotlight and one that's incredible to finally see. While yes they are technically bad guys, though if this the nature of this race then honestly they are behaving in a manner that is consistently true to themselves so bad guy would be in the eye of the beholder. I admire their sense of deviousness and willingness to achieve their goals at all costs you cannot say that about mankind for the most part the former yes but not the latter. So the fact that Chris brings us this unique look at their ideals and behaviour is fantastic! I like the way that this is being told. How the story & plot development is seen through how the sequence of events unfolds as well as how the reader learns information is presented perfectly. I like how we see the way things go and unfold and how it all works together even in separate parts or layers and leading us to the same place is really well done. The character development is amazing to see and I really am enjoying how the situations and circumstances we see help to define these characters. The pacing is marvellous and how it takes us through the pages revealing the twists and turns along the way helps to create this superb ebb & flow to the book. I love the interiors here. The linework we see is stellar and how the varying weights are utilised to bring out this quality of attention to detail is amazing. Seeing the inside the ship and how all that linework is seen through the various techniques it really is quite breathtaking. Then the way the creativity and imagination shines is beautifully rendered. With the backgrounds being utilised as such we see this nice depth perception, sense of scale and that overall sense of size and scope of the book. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show us this really good solid eye for storytelling. The colour work we see is impressive and I do really like how we see the various hues and tones within the colours to create the shading, highlights and shadow work. There are times when the colouring is simply beautiful and there are real stand out moments throughout. This is some extremely intelligent and engaging writing that's wrapped up in some beautiful interior artwork. We don't see such a frank and honest look at the behaviour of a species like we are here and I think this is what really makes this stand out from the crowd. Delightful storytelling all around here if you haven't seen this yet you need to get on that as soon as you can.

PORTLAND, OR, 03/27/2018 — Image Comics is pleased to announce the list of WHERE WE LIVE: LAS VEGAS SHOOTING BENEFIT ANTHOLOGY contributors.

Curated by JH Williams III, Wendy Wright-Williams, Will Dennis, and Image Comics’ Publisher, Eric Stephenson, one hundred percent of the proceeds for the WHERE WE LIVE anthology will be donated to

an existing GoFundMe campaign

for the survivors in Las Vegas.

The WHERE WE LIVE anthology contains over 70 stories from over 150 different creators and clocks in at around 300 pages total.

“It's a strange place, this time and this country, in which having tools that can only be used to murder is seen as human right. I wanted to write something to help raise funds for the victims of the Las Vegas mass shooting and for their families,” said Neil Gaiman, bestselling author and a contributor to the WHERE WE LIVE anthology. “It's about wounds and healing, about death and forgiveness, about pain and childhood and the dark. I hope it helps make people think, and I'm honoured to be part of the conversation.”

The book will include a variety of perspectives with key themes exploring gun violence, common sense gun control, value of a compassionate society, mental health stigmatization, aftermath of tragedy and how individuals and communities persevere, and an appreciation of Las Vegas as a vibrant community.

The WHERE WE LIVE anthology is a riveting collection of both fictional stories and actual eye-witness accounts told by an all-star lineup of the top talent working in comics today as well as Las Vegas locals. All the creators have graciously volunteered their time and talent to help bring some sense to this senseless act and, in the process, raise money for the survivors and their families.

2019 Eisner Award nominees announced

The nominees for the 2019 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards have been announced by Comic-Con International. Image Comics received the most nominations with 19, while DC Comics received 17 nominations (not including the “shared” categories, like colorists who work for multiple companies).

On the creator end, Tom King received the most nominations with six, followed by Alex de Campi and Jeff Lemire with four. Also, if you’re of the betting persuasion, here’s a tip: put your money on an Image series walking away with the Best New Series Eisner.

The announcement follows the list of nominees for the Will Eisner Hall of Fame, which was released in January. The awards will be announced in July at Comic-Con International in San Diego. Check out the complete list of nominees below.
