A take: there are some tensions between the characters but they are mostly incredibly small and petty things that friends use to mess with each other.

Melanie wants to strangle Jon, only because the Admiral likes him more than her and he is a smug bitch about it. They swear at each other so much, its not even to offend anymore, it’s almost a nickname at this point.

Tim reenacts a Shakespearean tale of betrayal, because he found out that Jon has been going to their favorite ice cream shop without him.

Basira and Jon keep stealing each other’s books at every turn, to the point of none of them are sure to just who this specific book belongs.

Something I noticed is that instead of "they would have gotten along in different circumstances without all the trauma and manipulation and Jonah orchestrating them to hate him on purpose," a lot of AU fanworks will go to significant lengths to...arrange circumstances to recreate that hatred? Which is totally valid if that's what people are inspired to do, but it's definitely more popular than allowing their relationships to change with their circumstances.
