Christmas Inheritance
Title: Christmas Inheritance. Year of Release: 2017. Available On: Netflix original, released 2017. Rating: 4 out of 5 Jingle Bells.
Tumblr media
This movie has one of the dumbest beginnings I have ever seen -- and if you follow this blog, you know I watch a lot of stupid movies!
Plot summary: Before spoiled heiress Ellen Langford (Eliza Taylor) can inherit her father's gift business, she must prove she’s not just a party girl, she can “take charge,” and since this is a Christmas movie.... She has to deliver a special Christmas card to her dad's former partner in Snow Falls, the hometown she never knew. The catch is that she has to do it all on $100 and a round trip ticket. No credit cards, no back-up cash. She can’t tell anyone who she is either. When a snowstorm strands her at the town inn, she's forced to work for her keep, and in the process, finds romance and discovers the true gift of Christmas. This movie is a classic Rich Kid Must Prove Themselves In Order to Become Richer and In the Process Learns the Real Meaning of Christmas (Hint: It’s Not Money).
Ellen: I want to prove to my father and myself that I can take care of things on my own. That I’m not just the party heiress.
Apparently Uncle Zeke and Ellen’s dad have been in love for years, and they have this very cute tradition of writing each other sweet newsletters about the happenings of the past year. It’s a touching tradition and now it’s up to Ellen to figure out how to make it happen this year. We are not supposed to have high hopes for her: poor little rich girl has apparently never been on a bus before, so she’s looking for a call button for wine?
Please excuse my likely ignorant urban assumptions, but even small towns have more than one taxi cab and sometimes even Uber or Lyft, right?
Ellen: My fiance says that giving money to the homeless actually hurts them.
Whoooooo areeee youuuuuuuu? You suck. This town is called Snow Falls. I would live in a town called Snow Falls. Ok ok, so next up there’s a troubled and heartbroken guy named Jacob who Ellen can’t avoid. You know what happens next -- it’s time to fall in love, lovers! Slowly but surely, and with jokes.
There is some singing, but Andie MacDowell is not very good at it. To be fair, neither am I though.

I was tagged by @bea2me to do self-isolating watch game. Thank you!
I had to search tumblr a bit for what I’m supposed to do, but here we go. Under the cut, because it got long (with gifs, as requested. ;))
Watched:
My Life is Murder - an Australian comedic murder mystery show with Lucy Lawless as the lead. I watched it just before self-isolating, but I’m gonna rec it again just because.
Tumblr media
Contagion (2011) - Eerily current. Just swap Covid-19 with a mystery virus the name of which I forgot and you get the scenario we’re living. Except with a bit more competent US government? It felt a bit unfinished though, in particularly in regard to Marion Cotillard’s character, so, bleh. (Also,WTF did I even like to torture myself with this? Is it not enough real life is the way it is right now?)
The Two Popes (2019) - a biopic about Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Francis, acting parts interspersed with documentary shots, very good (but I am Catholic.)
Tumblr media
Wings of Desire (1987) - German; apparently Kripke’s inspiration for Castiel about an angel who falls in love with a trapeze artist, the free will or lack there-of used as an allegory for defiance against/the system behind the Iron Curtain. A rather artistic piece with a feel of a theatrical play. I especially liked the black-and-white vs.coloured scenes montage.
Tumblr media
Husband for Hire (2008) - what the title says, an heiress has to get married to get her inheritance, so she hires a guy. A rather adorable rom-com, it made me laugh and forget other things for a while, which was all I was looking for, so job done. (Not to be mixed with a telemundo telenovela, which apparently also exists.)
(No gifs to be found, alas.)
Watching:
Besides what’s left of LoT, The Rookie, and CPD before the covid suspension kicks in (and New Amsterdam, but eh, I tend to forget it, because I don’t like this season that much, same goes for Grey’s and 19. Why am I still watching these anyway? Oh, right, habit and ease of access.):
Wellington Paranormal - a New Zealand comedic sci-fi police procedural, in a mock-documentary style about Wellington paranormal police unit consisting of three (3) cops, more incompetent that not, but very entertaining. I’m on ep 2 of season 2 (also, do not miss the Christmas special, b/c it’s A+) and I am enjoying it very much. It might even have been you, Bea, who recced it? In any case I highly recommend it further. ;)
Tumblr media
Four Weddings and a Funeral (US) - based on the 1994 movie, set in London, with mixed British and American characters, with a diverse cast, as a bonus Andie MacDowell guest stars in a minor role, a decent amount of funny moments, not too dramatic, it really manages to capture the movie feel, I’ve only got two episodes left and I’m loving it!
Tumblr media
Planning to watch:
Hmm, because I’m a masochist, I’m eyeing the last season of SPN and The 100 S6, but I’m going to try to restrain myself. It’s not like I have a (*goes to check*) list of 31 shows and 46 movies (gah these lists grow worse than hydra, watch one, add 5 more ;)). Um, so.
On the short list, though:
Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears - I’m actually planning to get to this one today after lunch, because I can’t wait. (While I’m at that, I do totally recommend Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, it’s Australian murder mystery show happening in the 1920s and it’s fabulous! The movie is a continuation of the series (which was finished.)
Tumblr media
The Last King (2016),  Little Women (2019), A Very English Scandal, El Tiempo Entre Costuras,  the Cosmos reboot, oh, right and I started Siempre Bruja (Always a Witch) a couple of years ago and never finished it, because while the concept intrigued me, the particular brand of suspense frustrated me too much, but I might give it another shot to finish it.
I’ll report on these if/when I watch any.
And if I run out of things to watch, I can always do a TO rewatch I want.
Tagging: @lglorien, @eveningspirit, @jadedbirch, @wellwhataboutme, @totallyshelfaware, @stargazerdaisy and whoever else wants to do it (as always feel free to ignore.)

Eliza's film last year, "Christmas Inheritance."
Oh yeah, I saw it. It was horrendously bad but Eliza did the best she could with mediocre material. The bland male love interest was already on my shit list for being Therese’s annoying, petulant boyfriend in Carol. But also, he had all the charisma of a piece of soggy white bread. I mean, Eliza had more chemistry with Andie MacDowell than she did with that dude.
However, the movie did give us this:

Films Watched in 2021 - (145/???)
Christmas Inheritance (2017) - Ernie Barbarash (1/5)
My wife wanted to watch a lighthearted Christmas movie. Jake Lacy deserves (and is capable of) so much better than this cheap, predictable, logic-devoid schlock. One point for the female lead (you know, the Paris Hilton stand-in with the obvious gymnastic double in the opening scene) being able to eliminate her Australian accent while seasoned professional Andie MacDowell only mostly masks her Southern one.

Christmas Inheritance (USA, 2017)
Tumblr media
And now, a very belated special bonus edition! Having failed to watch this in a timely fashion to post it before Christmas, and because we had a few other special Romcomathon posts we knew we wanted to do as well, we decided to just inundate you guys in bonus editions this week! We hope your Valentine’s week goes better than our viewing of this film.
Predictions: Kat predicted that Eliza Taylor was Santa’s daughter! Alex predicted that this movie was about an evil man who copyrights Christmas, but when his daughter inherits it, she must decide whether she’ll give Christmas back to the public or keep it profitably for herself. We had both seen the trailer at this point but chose to make these predictions anyway.
Plot: Eliza Taylor is the heiress to some kind of Hallmark Gifts company, but she’s like...you know, a socialite. Living in New York City. Engaged to her hotshot fiancé. Has no values. Blah blah blah. Her eccentric dad, who’s originally from a small town called SNOW FALLS (yup), sends her back there to deliver an annual Christmas newsletter to his longtime business partner. BUT, he tells her, she can’t have more than $100 on her nor can she reveal her true identity as a fancy heiress to those good ol’ hardworking folks. By accomplishing this task, she will prove herself worthy to inherit his multimillion-dollar company. OKAY, DAD, she inexplicably agrees, even though $100 is literally nothing in the Year of our Lord 2017. EVEN IN A TINY TOWN CALLED SNOW FALLS!!!!
Anyway, she gets there, and things immediately go awry. She can’t find her dad’s business partner. She gets off on the wrong foot with Terrible Hair Jake Lacy, the manpain-having manager of her dad’s business partner’s inn. SOMEHOW, the $100 is enough to cover one night’s stay plus food???? (This is ridiculous, as you will know if you’ve ever tried to stay a night at a quaint inn in some tiny New England town. No matter how poor the cell phone service and how bad the manager's hair.) Eliza Taylor is just fumbling around, trying to figure out how to get this letter delivered, while also learning some lessons, like how to vacuum and how to ride a bus and how to give money to homeless people.
Eventually, she is won over by Jake Lacy and Jake Lacy's kindly aunt, Andie MacDowell. Jake Lacy = so tragic, btw. He was thrown over by his fancy New York wife to the tune of “Silent Night” and hasn’t been able to listen to it since! He just draws horses in a stock room in his spare time and creates designs for ice sculptures! (WHAT WAS THIS FILM???) He’s also in charge of the local silent auction for their annual Christmas hoedown but hasn’t been able to get his shit together to solicit good items. So, of course, Eliza Taylor does that for him. She’s great at it because gift-finding is in her blood or something, and also she’s figured out altruism because of Jake Lacy’s wholesome goodness.
BUT THEN, Eliza Taylor’s fiancé shows up, and he’s like...not great, obviously, so she breaks things off with him and gets together with Terrible Hair Jake Lacy. Though not before they get into a big fight about her palace of lies, blah blah blah. Also, her eccentric dad turns up and is like, “This was all a ploy to get you to discover your roots and become a good person!” and it turns out that Dad’s business partner was all in on it too, and maybe also Andie MacDowell? WELL, OKAY, DAD. SEEMS STUPID TO US, BUT WHAT DO WE KNOW. Anyway, seems like by the end Jake Lacy’s coming around on “Silent Night,” thanks to him rediscovering love or whatever. The end.
Best Scene: There are some pretty nice, Christmas-y shots of the town all covered in snow and lights? Also, there’s a scene in which Eliza Taylor and Jake Lacy stumble upon his ice sculptures. They’re actually quite impressive and nice to look at. A pleasant distraction from the horrible rest of this movie.
Worst Scene: ...Weeeeeeeeell, basically every time Eliza Taylor and Jake Lacy had a conversation, it was bad. Real bad. The dialogue was PAINFUL to listen to. Also, Jake Lacy’s hair was bad to look at, as we’ve established. Probably the worst scene, though, was Eliza Taylor’s speech to Jake Lacy upon her return to Snow Falls. Oh god, so heartfelt. So terrible.
Best Line: Um. There was one kind of okay bit, where they almost kiss by the ice sculptures, and then Eliza Taylor is like, hold up, because she remembers she's engaged (as one should), and Jake Lacy gets really awkward and apologetic in classic Jake-Lacy fashion (also like a decent person). Those lines were innocuous and might have been fine, in another film.
Worst Line: See “Worst Scene.”
Highlights of the Watching Experience: What exactly IS this company?? Is it like a Hallmark store, only with more gifts than cards?! Is like the Christmas Tree Shops (a very weird chain that sells miscellaneous items + Christmas decorations, for those of you in the half of the country that doesn't have them)? Is it like...a home decor place? It's called “Home & Hearth Gifts,” and we wish there had been a scene in which we visited the actual business, because...????
How Many POC in the Film: Soooooo...the most significant POC in this film was Eliza Taylor’s black fiancé, whom she ditches for her wholesome new white boyfriend, Jake Lacy. Uhhhh, not great visually, Netflix. Not great at all. Especially since the other POC were her dad’s business partner, who appeared for a hot second at the end, and the local sheriff, who basically had two lines.
Alternate Scenes: We are...curious about Eliza Taylor and Jake Lacy's future. Now that he can trust again, is he able to re-trust New York City as well? He left it after he was thrown over, after all. But Eliza Taylor’s probably going to have to live there in order to be Chief Executive Officer (for some reason these people all haven't yet heard of the acronym "CEO")... Perhaps we'd watch a sequel about this. Then again -- maybe we're not that curious. THEN AGAIN -- we were apparently curious enough to watch THIS film, so who’s to say.
Was the Poster Better or Worse than the Film: Better. The poster is nondescript and could easily be the poster for that Santa's-daughter movie Kat suggested, which we honestly wish we had viewed instead. Also, the poster doesn't feature Jake Lacy's hair.
Score: 2 out of 10 upsettingly wholesome smooches. We were really hoping that this movie would be deliciously absurd à la A Christmas Prince, but instead it was wayyyy too earnest. If you're in the mood for some Christmas fun...let’s just say there are a lot of other movies to choose from.
Ranking: 107, out of the 119 movies we’ve seen so far. Ouch.

Eliza Taylor as Ellen Langford in Christmas Inheritance (2017)
When I was a teenager, my mom died. That’s the thing I can’t get over. I am so sorry. Thanks. She came from a beautiful little town, just like this one. And I could never bring myself to go back. Just- scared. Once she was gone, I just… I started living life as if nothing else mattered because, at the time, the way I felt, nothing did. But these past few days, you- You’ve taught me that some things really do matter.

i watched netflix’s ‘christmas inheritance’ (i tweeted it about it rather than liveblog it--it was a little bit easier bc i was watching it erratically) and i guess the discourse that’s popped up is which is better---
‘christmas prince’ or ‘christmas inheritance’
someone i just made up: they’re both terrible---
yes, but which one is more terrible than the other, person i just made up for this post?
and let me tell you, its really hard to decide bc there’s something unsatisfying about both.
christmas prince: pros and cons

christmas inheritance: pros and cons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
verdict: while the acting and production value is better in Christmas Inheritance (and has Andie MacDowell in it), A Christmas Prince is less worse if only bc the Female Lead is in complete control of her decisions. Is she an idiot? yes. but so is the prince. so it works. the Female Lead in Christmas Inheritance is forced to learn a lesson that i dont think she needed to learn in the first place. it’s all pretty fucked up. she has her CEO position, which is the only thing that really matters.
