My goal in small talk is to find what kind of topic the person is really passionate about. When people really like something, they tend to open up and be more lively and more... them, less guarded, and so it's easier to talk normally, and it's easier to become friends. But people dont like being put on the spot by being asked directly "what are you passionate about ?", andchances are they'll forget something anyway (we all do). So the game is to find what thing they really really like, without asking directly. "Oh did you watch a movie this weekend ?" <- acceptable, neutral way to check if they like movies, which is a step closer to asking "what kind of movie do you usually like ?" and "Oh i really really liked X movie in that genre, did you see it ?" and so forth.

Sometime people are passionate about something you really like too, and that is super cool ! And sometime they're obsessed with horses and you've never rode one, or spend most of their free time perfecting the taste of their coffee and you dont drink, but you still saw them smile, and open, and saw how they like something ! And next time you learn a fact or a news abput horses you can talk with them about it ! (which i find easier to do than trying to keep the conversation going after we both aknowledged that it s currently raining)

i dislike small talk. not because i think im better than everyone and only deserve thoughtful conversation, but because the purpose of it is outside of my field of vision, like infrared light. i dont have access to the thing that allistic people have happen between them when they go through the motions, i'm not smarter than you i'm actually way dumber
