Suck it Up, Sammy

A/N: I don't believe the content is too touchy, but for some it may be. Talks about olden beliefs of twins (and other births that involve more than one child) and albinism.

This was done on the phone and I apologize in advance.

Sam and Dean are stuck with a toddler after a failed hunt. After the youngest fights his brother on every option of removing the child from their grasp Sam finds himself a father.... and is anything but happy about it.

Dean grunted as he trudged down the steps of the closest thing to a childhood home he had; Well.... with the exception of Baby. He and Sam were laying low at their adopted father's house until they figured out what to do with the results of their last hunt.

A town went insane over a line woman having albino twins, and a line cult made it their mission to execute these "demonic entities". It was like something out of older times. If a woman bore more than one child, she was that of an animal!

God forbid her children didn't look an "acceptable" way, they were the children of Satan! A single mother and her toddlers had just moved to a small town in Texas before they became a target for a small group of religious cultists.

The only survivor of the night was a three year old girl who was practically mute. While Dean was trying to figure out if she had any relatives or where to send her, Sam was having a pity party for himself, blaming himself for the family's death.

He'd had the visions, he'd had the nightmares.... but he didn't know the needed details to save these people. When he freed the small girl from her bonds.... something came over him and he just.... wouldn't let her go.

She'd panic if he'd try to anyway. They ended up bringing her with them to a few hunts on their way back to Bobby's as Sam shot down every option. Finding her family, almost impossible. Adoption home, chance of abuse or the group finding her. Foster care, a bunch of possibilities and the same group. The church, that one Sam actually smacked his brother's arm.

"Who do you think was just hunting her, Dean?!" He didn't mean that town but Sam had a point. There were too many stories about abuse came with Nun hood. There was no way Bobby would raise her go through the same shit he'd gone through with John and the boys.

So it was either him or Sam being a dad and risking a child's life and putting then through the same hell they went through.... or a previous option.

Well Dean made it clear he wasn't looking to be a father, and Sam wasn't budging. Last night was the final straw. Bobby interrupted there fight and pretty much told Sam.... he was a dad now.

"Not gonna put her somewhere safe, she's your job now. I ain't raising her Sam, and your brother sure as shit ain't. She likes you, she's you responsibility." In which, Sam tried to fight back but the old man made it clear, it was a home or Sam, end of discussion.

Dean was already enjoying being an uncle. Oh the cute outfits and bibs. Sure, she was able to eat with out a bib but.... it was Batman! He spent all his cash on toys, clothes, pull ups, and anything else he thought was cute.

Honestly, it was the only reason he wasn't giving into Sammy's puppy eyes. The younger brother had been wallowing on self pity, trying to talk Dean into another plan for the kid. Dean would ignore him or simply state, "It's a stepping stone Sam. You can be the dad you always wanted dad to be. ", or " It'll get your mind of Jess, dad, and everything else." Normally it was the first one that shut the other up.

They'd spent about a month with her now, and she was slowly starting to get used to them. She was still clinging to Sam like a life line though.... but she was letting Dean and Bobby hold her now too. "Alright kiddo, pancakes, " the eldest hunter asked. Bright blue eyes blinked before looking up to the man holding her.

"I think she'll like them. Gonna have to get used to them." Bobby frowned a bit before shaking his head. "You seem excited about this, why don't you be daddy?" Sam was in bed still, trying to ignore the title. "Because, I'm uncle material. Besides, she'd um... kind of be a bit of a, that. Not like Sammy's getting any anyway."

He bounced her up a bit more before kissing the platinum curls. "Besides, she likes Sam better. Probably should get her into a child psychologist though. She's got some damage." He tapped her little head with a smile. She didn't smile back. She'd looked either sad, come fused, or scared the whole time they'd had her.

"Aint we all? How about a name first? Need something to put on those papers." They should have raided the house for her birth certificate and social security number. "Yeah... the number is still going to be an issue. But not like she's driving any time soon, are ya? "

She was holding on of Sam's forty night shirts to her face as Dean kissed her head. Bobby finished some pancakes before passing his eldest a knife and fork. "What's the knife for, " he asked. "Well look at her mouth." Oh, not for him. "But I'm serious about the name. Even if she has one... she can't write or talk."

Green eyes looked up to blue. "Maybe those magnet shapes? She could spell her name." They didn't know how old she was though. "Dean she's either two or three. She may know her name but.... probably can't spell it." Crap. "Well how about Xena, huh? Like the warrior princess?"

"We're not naming her Xena." Ah, his highness was awake. "'Bout time you joined us sleeping beauty," Bobby grumbled. "I'm twentysix Bobby, I'm too young to be a dad." The older man sighed. "Boy, you lived else where you'd have been one at thirteen. God forbid the olden days."

Blue eyes lit up before the shirt was dropped and small hands reached for the younger Winchester. "Besides, think she's claimed you, " Dean commented. Sam looked at her with sorrow before picking her up and setting her on his lap. Well... trying too. Small arms hugged around his neck, giving him a morning hug.

He sighed as he hugged back. She'd already grown on him, but he couldn't do this! "I don't know what I'm doing though." Bobby laughed as he set a plate down for him. "Well no kidding, no parent does Sam!" Dean was still cutting up pancakes before drowning them in syrup.

He moved closer to his brother before getting the girl's attention. "Just be what dad wasn't, and Bobby was." It was that simple. "You'll figure it out, " Bobby sighed as he rolled his eyes at Dean's response. "We're gonna have to go back down and get her papers, " Sam grumbled as he took a bit of his food.

The girl didn't want the pancake offered, she wanted the big one her new daddy was eating. She opened her mouth and just looked at him like.... "give". The brunette pointed back to Dean. " That's yours." But, she wanted daddy's. Once more the mouth opened.

The younger Winchester sighed before taking the fork from Dean, who happily took care of Sam's plate. "I say we just get her a new number, change her name, and keel her the he'll away from the screw hole." Bobby sighed. "Brother's right. Besides, she's still adjusting to you. Leaving her here or taking her with you isn't an option. "

She looked at Sam, but didn't open her mouth this time. Ignoring Bobby, he huffed. "You just wanted mine!" Dean laughed a bit. "You ain't eating it now. Take a bite, then see if she wants it." The younger looked at him in disgust. "You drown it in syrup Dean." Bobby was getting annoyed with this. "Enough. Sam, eat the damn pancake before is scare her more and force feed it to you."

Enough said. Sam took a bite, baby took a bite. Soon enough the plate had been filled again and emptied again before small fry yawned. She fussed when Bobby came after her face with a damp cloth though.

Sam brought her up to the shared room to change her and put her down for a nap. As he did, Dean was put on dish duty. "I gotta get more food. Another mouth too feed, and Zeus is running low on kibble." The older quirked a brow. "Could have told me last week when I was going baby crazy." The old man sighed. "Just, make sure your brother doesn't do anything stupid."

It was maybe twenty minutes before Same came back down with a small bundle pressed to his chest. She already had favorite toys, and a giraffe blanket Dean found on clearance was one of them. Setting her down in the play pen, the new dad laid back on the couch with a sigh.

"Could be worse, she could be like.... an infant." Not helping. Sam shot him a glare before covering his face with his arm again. "We're putting a kid's life in danger Dean. How can you be happy about this?" The other patted his leg as to make him move. Sitting down, he found himself a foot rest.

"Well.... it's sticking with us and we protect and teach her.... or not knowing what happens to her."" His brother uncovered his face again while sitting up slightly. "So, put her though the same hell? Schooling, social life?" Dean rolled his eyes at the last one. "We're in a new day and age. She can do school online, you have a laptop."

"Money, " Sam fought. "Sammy, we've been getting by for yesrs. For someone who didn't want to her going anywhere else, you really are trying to get rid of her. " Was he? Guilt washed over him as he sighed. "Guess I'm just stressed, and scared, and anxious." He squeaked when there was a poke to his foot.

"Maybe Sammy just needs some time with his favorite brother? " Oh no, the smirk. Sam tried to yank his feet back, but to no avail. His laughter filled the room as he yelled and squealed for his brother to stop. "Dhehhean! Whehehr're too old fhahaor this! "

The older smiled. "Too old to cheer you up?" Sam was louder than the documentary on the television. He bounced around in his seat, trying to get away. "Nahhaha! D-DhehehaHEAN!" Starting princess hair spread across a throw pillow as the older brother moved to the younger's toes.

"Aw come on Sammy, I'm just helping you relax. Maybe de stress a little?" Dean had a shit eating smirk on as he destroyed his brother. It got a bit better and worse as he moved up the moose-like legs. Gasps and shrieks were heard from the younger as fingers dug into the back of his knees.

For Dean, it was like trying to stay on a Bucking Bronko bull ride, or something similar. Sam was physically meaker, but he had some powerful strength in his body. "Shit, ghehehet ahahahway!" Taught and skilled fingers dug into smaller thighs before hands tries to pull at them.

"Sammy, language. Your going to give her a potty mouth!" They really needed a name for her. "Yhahhaour ghahahaoning thahahao whahake HER! DEAN!" Sam shrieked when his brother started to tickle his navel. He shoved, swatted at, and tries to knock off the other. "I'm not going to wake her, but you are. Lower your voice Sammy."

"Sthahahaop chahahalling mhehehehe thahahat! No, get away get awahahahhahay!" Hiccupy shrieks and giggles poured like music from the younger as his armpits were messed with. Tears started to come down Sam's red face as he shook his head and tried desperately to get Dean off him.

The torment stopped as a moose toy hit the older in the head. They both looked over to see a small being just looking at them with tear filled, cranky eyes. They disturbed nap time! "Hey, that wasn't nice," Dean fake pouted. "Neither was waking her and tickling me to death, " Sam growled before shoving Dean back towards the other end of the couch.

The dad stood up before taking his cranky little moose and trying to lull her back to sleep. As he did.... curiosity came over Dean. He stood up before putting the moose toy back in the pen and walking over to the two. Sam stepped back warily. "Don't even. I will drop her," he hissed.

Green eyes rolled before the other tries to find a little foot. "No, I'm curious about something." From when he saw her before the murders, sue was a pretty giggly kid. She talked a lot too. She was scared into silence, so to speak. Sam said it was a form of turama, but maybe he could still get a little giggle out of her. Hell, he just wanted a smile!

But daddy stepped back again. "What are you doing? Leave her alone. Dean, she's trying to nap." The other rolled his eyes. "Here's an idea, let me try this and stop nothing about being a dad and come up with a name for her." Blue eyes rolled before a little head shot around to see what was touching her.

She honestly looked like a sleepy, little puppy. "You ticklish," the uncle asked. She simply pulled at her foot and turned back to sleep on her daddy. "Dude, I told you, leave her be." The older sighed. "Name, Sammy. I just want her to smile. Didn't your extra college classes tell you laughter is the best medicine or something?"

The taller huffed. "That's not how turama works Dean." Okay, so both baby and daddy were cranky. "Well.... who's pull up am I changing first? Her's or your's?" Both were un amussed. "Aw, look Sammy; She's already acting like her daddy!" The other scoffed a bit before turning to walk back up to the bed room.

"Aw, come on Sam! You have no humor." Before the other was fully upstairs he yelled up again. "You don't name her soon, I'm calling her Xena or Ivy!" That caused the other to stop. "Really, not Barbra or Selena, " Sam scoffed. "She can be your little Batgirl." Dean smirked. "Ain't passing the buck that easily."

He thought for a moment. "So Sammy needa tickle therapy for a name, crankiness, and new dad syndrome? Coming right up! " Foot steps pounded through the house along with yelling and shrieks of surprise and laughter.

By the time Bobby got home, he was met with the sight of a cranky toddler who opened her arms to be taken away from the sleeping bafoons. "These idjits keep ya' awake, huh? " She clung to him before sighing in relief; It was nap time.

The older hunter looked over his boys before rolling his eyes, this would be there hardest job yet.

Time Heals......Chapter Ten

Chris held open the door and followed her out. Joyce and their crowd of family members seemed to turn in their direction just as they stepped into the hallway. Within moments, Joyce and Monica were standing in their faces.

“What the hell is going on?” Monica spat. Joyce made a sound in agreement as her hands settled on her hips.

“Mama, please not here.” Robyn said softly.

Monica’s body language softened at Robyn’s tone, “Anna, are you ok?”

“Mommy, I’m tired. I just don’t have anything left in me right now.”

“Chris, what did you do to her?” Joyce asked.

“Mama J, he didn’t do anything. Seriously, just not right now.”

Monica grabbed Robyn and steered towards the rest of the waiting family members as Joyce stared down her son.

“Christopher, what is the matter?”

“Mama, it’s just a lot going on. Any other news about the girls?”

“They’re stable. They’ll be able to do the surgery tomorrow if you plan on being here.”

“That’s fine.”

“What did you and Robyn have to talk about?”

“Something personal. We’ll let everybody know once we figure some stuff out.”

“Did the donation go well?”

“Yea, guess we got lucky my blood type matched.”

“Yea. Definitely.”

“So what is everybody going to do?”

“I figured we’d all get something to eat then decide from there. It’s been a long day for everybody.”

“Very true.”

Joyce hugged her son and Chris kissed her forehead, “you know she’s gonna need you more than ever now.”

“Who? Robyn?”

“Yea. She loves to play the tough role but she’s gonna need all the support she can get. Don’t be too hard on her, she’s just so used to doing it all on her own.”

“Mama, I can only be there for her as much as she’ll let me.”

“I know but just try for me, ok?”

“Mama, why are you pushing this so hard?”

“I’m worried about her. I’ve been worried about her for the past few years. Me and Monica talk all the time and neither of us know how to get through to her. You coming back was a blessing in disguise because it’s the only time I’ve seen her show any real emotion other than towards her daughters since Michael died. It’s not healthy and she’s too stubborn to listen.”

“Mama, I’m not some kind of magician. I’m not really sure what you expect me to do. I can barely get her to be nice to me for more than five minutes and you think my presence is supposed to make some kind of a difference.”

“Chris, I’m not asking you to fix her. I’m asking you to be there for her; y’all have always had a different kind of relationship than everyone else, you know that.”

“Ma, it’s been eight years. Today was the first time I got her to accept any kind of help for me without a fight first”

“It hasn’t gone away; as much as you piss her off, she still cares about you and your opinion. Whether she’ll ever admit that, I don’t know but she does.”

“You got more hope than I do.”

Joyce chuckled, “Don’t I always? But seriously, just think about it.”

Chris nodded his head and looked up just as Robyn looked over in his direction. The worn lines of her face tugged at his heart as he thought back to their conversation in the examination room. He had to get this together and hope he’s not about to sacrifice one relationship for another.

Tiana watched as Chris paced back and forth in front of her. It was clear something was wrong and he was about to leave permanent footprints in the carpet.

“Babe, what is the matter?”

“I have to tell you something really serious.”

“Ok. Is it bad?”

“Yes.”

Tiana shrank back against the couch and took a deep breath, “what did you do?”

“T, I, well 8 years ago, I, uh cheated on you.”

“You did what!” Tiana jumped up.

Chris immediately stopped pacing and moved to the back of the couch. Tiana was sweet and small but she had a temper the size of Texas. He only saw it once but he knew it was devastating.

“Baby Girl, look, it was a mistake. I got drunk and it happened.”

“Who was it?”

Chris groaned and Tiana immediately thought back to the hospital, “is that what you were talking about with Robyn? You had sex with her?”

“Look Tiana, we didn’t mean for it to happen. We both agreed it meant nothing and it wasn’t supposed to happen. I’m in love with you and didn’t mean for it to happen.”

“Is that why you haven’t spoken to her in 8 years? Over this?”

“Yes. How I exactly handled the situation wasn’t ideal and we kind of fell out because of it.”

“Well apparently. When did you sleep with her?”

“Before we got married.”

“But while we were engaged?”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t think to tell me this before I said I do?”

“I just wanted it to disappear like it never happened.”

“Chris, I can’t believe you! All this time I’m trying to be friends with this woman and you had sex with her while you were with me.”

“Baby Girl, it was a mistake.”

“Mistake or not, you still did it and didn’t have the decency to tell me about it. Anything else you need to tell me while I’m already pissed off?”

Chris sighed, “Actually yes.”

“What? You got her pregnant?”

Chris paused and Tiana’s eyes widened, “No Christopher. Do not tell me her daughters are yours. Do not tell me that.”

“Tiana….”

“Christopher! You had fucking babies on me. Are you fucking serious!

“Babe, I didn’t know she was pregnant. I didn’t even know the twins existed until we came back and I didn’t know they were mine until a few hours ago.”

“How did you not know?”

“We lost contact before she ever found out she was pregnant so I never spoke to her to even find out.”

“But your mother?”

“Nobody knows that the twins are my daughters. Nobody even knows we had sex with each other.”

“Are you fucking kidding?”

“I wish I was. Tiana, I know I fucked up and I swear I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make it up to you but I don’t wanna gain a relationship with my daughters just to lose my wife.”

“You fucking betrayed me. You let me get married to you knowing you cheated on me, knowing the woman you call your so-called best friend fucked you behind my back. You had this bitch at my wedding knowing you fucked her! What the fuck!”

“Tiana.”

“No. Christopher, I can’t believe you did this to me and kept it a secret for so long,” Tiana paused to catch her breath, “are you still fucking her?”

“No. We only had sex that one time.”

“Did you ever plan on telling me?”

“Yes but after I spoke to Robyn about it first.”

“Is this why you wanted to come back to Texas? To be around her?”

“No, I came to be around my family. I thought she had moved away until my mother told me she just moved to another city when I spoke to her right before we flew back to the states.”

Tiana started pacing and tapping her hand against her thigh, “let me try and understand this. You and Robyn had sex eight years ago. She got pregnant but never told you. We move back to Texas, you find out she has children then when you volunteer to be a blood donor for the girls, you find out you’re their biological father.”

“That sounds about right.”

“What kind of soap opera bullshit is this?”

“Look, I’m still trying to wrap my mind around this.”

“Does her children know?

“No.”

“Did her husband know?”

“She said he knew he wasn’t their father, she was already 4 months pregnant when they met.”

“And her family?”

“Most of them know her husband isn’t the biological father but they don’t know I’m their real father.”

“So she was just gonna take this to her grave?”

“She said she didn’t want to cause any issues. We didn’t exactly plan on ever seeing each other again and she figured I was married and moved on.”

“So what about her daughters?”

“She already planned on telling them when they were old enough to understand.”

“So who’s on the birth certificates?”

“Only her. No father listed.”

“How could she even think this was a good idea?”

“I can’t speak for her on that.”

“Call her.”

“What?”

“Call her. I need to talk to her before I make a decision about anything because this is fucking ridiculous.”

“Tiana, she’s not in a good space. I don’t think now is the time to address this.”

“You ain’t been friends with this bitch again for more than a few weeks and you already protecting her, “Tiana scoffed, “I’m sure she wasn’t thinking about me when she was throwing it back on my soon to be husband.”

“Look, I understand you’re upset but you gotta cut the name calling seriously. I’m trying to handle this in an adult manner and her daughters were just in a car accident. The time isn’t right, ok?”

Tiana scoffed and left down the hall towards the bedroom. A few moments later, he heard the door slam and a loud scream. Chris plopped down on the couch and laid his head in his hands.

Robyn sat on her back porch with her arms wrapped around her body. What the hell happened? How did all this come back to haunt her so fast? Why couldn’t Chris have just stayed in France? She had no answers for any of these questions and it was driving her crazy.

I'm sure the "no need to panic" brigade would want us to point out that this affecting "only" hundreds or thousands of Latinx Americans living in a narrow region along the border.

But.

First of all, that's too many people.

Because...

Because here is the thing about due process.

Everybody gets it, or no one really has it.

And from the moment the Trump regime decided it just doesn't apply to "illegal" immigrants, we were always heading here.

Some (white) people replied to suspension of due process for non-citizens by saying "Well, I could prove my citizenship easily." But how do you do that when you're not entitled to any process to prove anything?

If we passed an amendment to the Constitution saying that Constitutional protections don't apply to waterbed repair technicians named Sleven Trusbucket, all the government would have to do is say that's you and you would be out of options for proving them wrong.

And to the sort of person who is sure that life operates on formal logic and strict proof, the sort of person who is sure if they can present the right argument just the right way they can convince anyone of the truth of anything, it feels like there must be some way around that.

But that's part of the horror of a situation like this, part of why Kafka's The Trial is so viscerally uncomfortable to read. The proof does not matter if no one is bound to accept the proof. It feels like it should. It always feels like truth should matter, proof should matter.

Now I said long ago, and again at the head of this thread, that we're past the point of "first they came for". For most of the people reading this, they're still not up to "they came for me", and probably won't be for a while. They're working to expand the ranks of "non-American"

They redefined huge swathes of undocumented immigrants -- including ones working with the system to fix their status -- as "criminals" and "gangmembers" and "animals". They slammed the door in the face of immigrants with papers, finding pretexts to call them "illegal".

They started revoking the citizenship of naturalized citizens for whatever excuse they could find, and the next step is to strip citizenship of natural born citizens who don't fit their profile of a Real American.

Right now their excuse for doing so is restricting them to people born in a border region but the excuse will widen and so will the scope of the action.

And they aren't just moving in one direction here. They've been revoking the passports of trans people while all this is happening.

Now, the flipside of revoking citizenship and "deporting" someone is: the United States cannot bestow citizenship for another country. Just because the man in the low castle thinks someone looks "Mexican" doesn't mean they default to that when they lose US citizenship.

There's been a lot of talk on Twitter about the dangers of statelessness, in regard to Canada and ending birthright citizenship (something the Trumpers would love to do if they can swing it.)

People who lose their citizenship are thrown into a legal limbo, effectively becoming unpersoned for many purposes.”

And while nationalists whip up fear of the foreign, they hate and despise the stateless even more. They're deliberately making the "immigration crisis" worse.

Nazi apologists will be happy to tell you that the great humanitarian Hitler tried so hard to get Jewish Germans settled happily and healthily elsewhere but that no one would take them in, thus leaving him with a problem in need of a final solution.

So what's going to happen when Trump has stripped citizenship from everyone who doesn't "look American", doesn't "look like they should be voting", but there's nowhere to deport all these people, no home country for them to return to?

And maybe you're thinking that we don't have the resources to actually disenfranchise and denaturalize *everybody* who doesn't "look American" buuuut the magic of not giving due process is they don't have to.

If you knew that people whose last names are in the same language as yours are getting rounded up, stripped of rights, and arrested when they go to apply for or renew a passport... how dire would it have to be, before you'd dare try?

And then what if it expands to, say, people showing up at polling places? DMVs? Hospitals?

What if it goes on to the point where "everyone knows" that people with certain names and/or skin tones aren't really citizens and don't have to be afforded any particular rights?

Before the SCOTUS struck down sodomy laws, in a lot of states being seen as gay could be used to justify just about any level of discrimination. Gay couple needs an apartment? "We can't make landlords rent to a criminal if they don't want to." Were the couple ever convicted? No.

But ~*everybody knew*~ what gay people got up into their bedrooms was illegal, doing illegal things made you a criminal, and being a criminal was grounds for termination, eviction, expulsion, exclusion.

Or if you want to see what the future of law enforcement looks like in a fascist state, look at the standards used to arrest and prosecute sex workers.

For years now, in the land of Innocent Until Proven Guilty, you could be arrested for "suspicion" of a victimless crime because of entirely legal materials in your purse and entirely legal conduct within a place you had every legal right to be.

The actual ideal is that the cops could know you're a sex worker, could know for a certain fact that you're engaged in sex work, but if they couldn't prove it then you are an innocent in the eyes of the law. That's how it's supposed to work and how it works for some crimes.

Everyone in town can know that J. Doe up on the hill beats his wife and kids but if the cops can't prove it they will tell you nothing can be done, and proof has to be more than the fear in their eyes or bruises on their arms. Or even him "allegedly" bragging about it.

Meanwhile they'll pick people up off the street for ~*suspicion*~ of sex work and "prove" it through entirely circumstantial means, none of which points to actual lawbreaking.

Now here's the crux of that: being able to claim that any woman carrying condoms (for instance) is a sex worker doesn't mean they detain everyone and make them turn out their pockets.

It just gives them a tool, a weapon, to use when they feel like it.

And that's the future of policing. Increasingly broad rules that could apply to increasingly wide swaths of the population, that can be deployed by the authorities when someone "looks" like they might be trouble, much less starts to actually make any.

They practice these techniques on populations they think they can get away with practicing them on, and when they do get away with it, they start looking to expand.

Cf. stop and frisk in New York City, where white kids were more likely to have marijuana but less likely to be stopped and ordered to turn out their pockets. It was a tool of control.

Obviously I'm talking about practices that go back years before when Trump came to power. He's part of a progression, not the source.

And if you want to know where the progression is heading, just look at how the law has treated people on the margins since the year seventeen seventy forever.

That's where we're heading.

And I don't think enough people are alarmed enough by this.

I saw somebody QTing the Washington Post story at the head of this thread with "And Democrats want to tell us to vote every two years like that's enough."

It's not enough. But we haven't been voting every two years, and that's part of how we got here. Just part. A crucial part.

I think we should add this (specifically: stripping people near the border of citizenship) to the things we call our representatives about, especially but not only if you're in Texas. And if we can vote in a Democratic majority we'll have more tractable reps to yell at about it.

A scary thing in all of this: the wave of revocation of trans passports I alluded to upthread doesn't appear to have *originated* anywhere. Select federal employees just decided it's time to start doing it.

I can't tell you from the outside which escalations of "enforcement" (to abuse the term) against immigrants and what I guess are "accused immigrants" among citizens were also spontaneous decisions made at the level at which they occur but I'm sure some of them were.

What I'm saying is, there have always been people within the federal enforcement apparatus and bureaucracy who were waiting for favorable winds to launch their warships.

With so much of this enforcement being subjective and self-directed, it is also decentralized. Which makes it harder to block or even attack.

I know people are waiting for a point where it feels real, where it really feels like Nazi Germany. That point is going to be too far along to have any practical chance of stopping it.

Instead it's going to keep happening piecmeal and every time it happens, those who sound the alarm will be met with "You're overreacting, this isn't like a law against Jewish business ownership, this is only affecting a specific group of people in specific circumstances."

Relax: The monster's not eating your whole body, it's just eating one bite at a time.

The piecemeal, self-directed, subjective nature of these actions makes them harder to fight. Bank of America, the State Department, and DHS are all saying the same thing when questioned on this: "This is the same policy we've always followed." It's just being applied differently.

"We've always exercised discretion..." but now it's being exercised in different directions, towards different ends.

Someone asked what to do, besides be scared:

Make a lot of noise. If we are silent, we are complicit. If the only voices heard are those who support what's happening, they can claim universal assent.

If you work in a workplace, try telling your coworkers, "You know, they're taking citizenship away from people who live near the borders. If they can do that to anyone, they could do that to us. I don't think it's right." You don't have to make it partisan or anti-Trump.

Yell at your elected representatives. Democratic politicians should be aware that the GOP is reshaping the electorate in their favor. It's cynical, but they have to care about that.

Tweet about it, share it on social media. These things are not sufficient but they are necessary.

Vote in November. Same.

I know it feels like making noise isn't doing anything except complaining and we're taught that talk is the opposite of action but I promise you: talk is an action. When there is enough of an outcry they back down. Not all the way always. But slowing and mitigating damage helps.

So, who is John T. Wayne?

I think the best way for the interested reader to follow what happened in my life is to treat this story as an eighty plus year old mystery. That is what my father’s birth was, a mystery to the entire family, (I am referring to my brothers and I). The fact is he was born, he was our father, we knew his birth date, we knew who his mother was, what we didn’t know is who his father was and neither did he. He would never know.

In 2011 late in the summer I placed a call to the National Enquirer. The fellow on the phone had a foreign accent. I know I started the conversation wrong because, he laughed and said, “It takes more than looking like someone to be their grandson,” and hung up the phone. He’s right of course, but he never got the story because he didn’t listen long enough to hear the rest of the story. That is what you the reader are getting now. The rest of the story, as Paul Harvey would say.

Imagine for a moment if you will, that you grow up on planet earth not knowing anything of family. Imagine that what little you have learned from your family just doesn’t add up. Imagine if you will, you have grown up thinking your last name was one thing, when it was really something else.

This is how our father grew up.

Why the mystery? Why all the secrecy? Why all the deception? Why couldn’t my father know who his earthly father was?

Dad understood one thing early on, and what he learned did not please him. His own family was willing to lie to him so that he never knew his real father. When I say his family I’m not talking about just his mother, I mean the entire family. I don’t include his half brothers and sisters here, because I don’t think they knew the truth any more than we did. They just never questioned any discrepancies they were told about our father. Consequently, neither did their children. I’m talking about the elders in the family, my great grandmother and others who were responsible adults at the time my father was born in 1935. Often times in my own life I suffered from the idea I was cursed, that I had upon me one of those generational curse’s which the Bible eludes to. One thing to keep in mind when dealing with one of those is; “When cursed by both God and the Devil, God is the only one faintly interested in lifting the curse.”

In my life I have learned one thing well. A lie on paper is still a lie. I don’t condone such a thing, it is fraud. It makes others believe something that is not true. I’ll give you a for instance. One of the reason’s D.O.T. had made all of the trucking companies go to electronic logs to track when a truck is being driven is because so many drivers have fudged their logs for so many years, and the good ones got smart and knew good and well how to run two or three logs at a time so they could run around the clock if needed be to get more miles. That’s great until you fall asleep behind the wheel and kill innocent children getting off a school bus in Florida. That happened while my wife and I lived in Florida about ten years ago. It was a tragedy. The company didn’t lose much, but the driver is probably still in jail and the children, (seven from the same family), will never grow up all because a truck driver learned to cheat the documents that say how long he’s been driving. The electronic logs don’t lie and can’t be fudged to my knowledge.

Let’s examine my father’s situation.

Billy Gene Hammock; not a thing in that name indicates he was John Wayne’s son. No one would be looking for a connection to the Duke, and that was just the way his phony Birth Certificate was meant to read. To us boys our father’s life was a horrid chain of events; yet his entire existence was never a complete story, more a brainteaser with many missing pieces, however such a story can be patched together if one is willing to try. The result is what you are now reading. I would like to mention here that often times the Duke is criticized for having never fought in WW ll. You can’t tell me John Wayne didn’t serve in WW ll. He flew all over the occupied Pacific Theatre to entertain U.S. troops without a military escort risking life and limb in the process. His pilot still lives in Blytheville, Arkansas. While it may have been the dumbest thing he ever did, he lived to tell.

I would like to state here that the evidence I have is stronger than any piece of paper. It is 4 generations of John Wayne. My father looked like the Duke though he could not stand straight. I look like the Duke, my son and my brother look like the Duke a good deal. It may be our grandson’s come along as well. Only time will tell. What I can tell you is genes don’t lie.

I’m may not have every piece of the puzzle in this book, but I have enough to see most of the picture. Anyone can see it if they have half a brain. I can’t turn back the clock and go see what happened in 1934, I can’t witness what happened eighty three years ago, but what has come to me is no coincidence. Much of what I have learned has come to me from complete strangers while signing books around the country. I never expected that, not in a million years. I don’t think anyone else did either.

One of my most interesting exchange’s came from Maureen O’Hara in 2013 while visiting the John Wayne Birthplace Museum in Winterset, Iowa. I came up to the house and a line of people was waiting by the white picket fence and I asked the folks in line what was going on. A woman standing at the front of the line said, “Maureen O’Hara is inside, we’re waiting for her to come out.” Just then the door opened and her grandson pushed her down the sidewalk. Now I’m no line cutter, and out of respect for the other folks in line I stepped back and was about to go to the back of the line when Mrs. O’Hara stopped her grandson looked up at me and said, “You ought to be part of the family.” I was stunned to say the least. I just drove six hundred miles to see her. Without knowing a thing about me she comes out with a statement like that! I didn’t engage her, she engaged me so I responded, “Well ma’am, I believe I am.” She took another look at me then and said, “Do you know it or do you just believe it?” I answered with, “I know it. The rest of the world just doesn’t know it yet.” She smiled at me then with knowing eyes and waved at her grandson to move along. There were well over a hundred folks lined up to meet her and she greeted every one of them after speaking with me. I watched for a while, just a bit off key because of what just happened. Me a complete stranger and she thought I should be one of the John Wayne family. Later that day about noon they were breaking ground for the new museum and she began to take pictures with the John Wayne dress alike’s, I say dress alike’s because none of them really looked like the Duke. Once again she was in charge and when they started she said, “You come on in here, you aren’t getting out of this.” I was invited to take the photos with her and the other John Wayne’s, but I wasn’t dressed like the Duke. I was just a cowboy. I took another photo with her on my own camera, and I have that one. I also gave her two signed books at that time. One I signed to the first lady of John Wayne movies, and the other from The grandson of the old Duke. Two weeks before that I visited the Alamo in Texas. I picked up a signed copy of a book called, “The Bugles are Silent.” It was written by a gentleman named John Knaggs. I met John that day, he didn’t look up when he asked how I wanted my book signed. He was just working his way through the line as quickly as he could. I said, “Just make it to John T. Wayne.” He glanced up then, a moment later he stood up and shook my hand. “Well I’ll be, I guess it is John T. Wayne. Good Lord, you look just like him.” “I come by it honestly,” I said. When he finished his line we went across the street and had lunch. When he signed that book, he signed it to: The grandson of the old Duke. Since that day, I have signed most of my books: From the grandson of the old Duke.

You’ll have to deal with packing, housing inspections, house-hunting, and traveling with pets, just to name a few tasks. It’s common to see members of the United States military around because the U.S. Navy has two major air stations near the port. Corpus Christi is home to Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, which provides 6,200 civilian jobs to the local economy, making it the single largest employer in the city. Many military families and retirees are drawn to the city’s affordable and laid-back lifestyle.

And now here’s a basic checklist to help you get a smooth start on your PCS move to Corpus Christi TX!

Start planning early

The moment you receive your orders, you should start planning for your military move at once. While this may seem like common knowledge, many military families fail to start planning within an adequate time frame.

Carefully planning your move can help reduce your stress and anticipate potential obstacles. Make a list of moving tasks, so nothing important is neglected. Having tangible lists will help tackle a move more efficiently and effectively. As soon as you know you’ll be moving, start doing as much as you can to prepare.

Create a PCS Binder

One simple way to stay on top of your move is to create a PCS binder. Having a PCS binder can make your relocation easier and less hectic.

You can look online for templates for your binder, or you can simply make your own. If you decide to make your own, you’ll need the following:

So what should you put inside your PCS binder?

Make an appointment with your base transportation office

Schedule an appointment for a counseling session at your base transportation office. During the counseling, you will talk about how much your allowance will be based on rank and dependent status. You will also go over which moving option would be best for your situation.

Decide what kind of move you are going to have

There are three options when it comes to executing a PCS move.

Government Move

This is a full-service option. Your local Travel Management Office (TMO) will take care of your entire move from start to finish. A commercial moving company will be hired to come to your home and take care of everything. That includes packing all your stuff, loading them onto their truck, transporting them to your new home, unloading, and unpacking.

PPM Move

A Personally Procured Move (PPM) or “DITY” (Do-It-Yourself) move means you take charge of the entire process. Although this option requires a little extra work, the government will pay you back 95% of what it would have cost had you done a standard PCS move. You may also be eligible for a partial advance, depending on your branch.

Partial Move

This is also referred to as a combination move or partial DITY. This option allows for a little more flexibility. You will ship a certain amount of your household goods via the government and the rest as a PPM. The weight allowance is split between the government move and PPM. To be reimbursed for the DITY side, make sure to keep all receipts and government paperwork and don’t go beyond the allotted budget.

Know your PCS weight allowance

Among the many details you have to work out during your move, your PCS weight allowance could have the most expensive consequences. You also have to remember that it’s your responsibility to have an accurate estimate of the weight of your household goods and stay within the allowance. Otherwise, you’ll have to shoulder the overage. Service members also have a right to ask their moving company or military transportation office for a re-weigh of their household goods, and they have a right to be present when that re-weigh is conducted.

Know your rights

There’s a lot at stake in your move so it’s essential to learn your rights. In addition, when you're moving in service to the nation, you deserve to be treated fairly and professionally.

The Department of Defense Personal Property Program has published a customer bill of rights that spells out everything you should expect, such as negotiating pickup and delivery dates, and having moving debris and containers removed on the day of delivery at no cost.

Discuss the moving process with your children

Change is never easy for some children. The idea of moving to a new location can be scary. Aside from that, your children will have to leave behind their friends, relatives, school, and home that they've grown to love.

At present, there are 2,000,000 military-connected children in America. 1,381,584 of the military-connected children are ages 4-18 years old.

Over 80 percent of these children – 1,105,267 students – attend Pre-K through 12 public schools.

517,734 children in preschool (ages 0-5)

516,324 children in primary school (ages 6-14)

186,883 children in high school or older (ages 15-22)

Every school district in the country has military-connected students.

Expect that there will always be some sadness when you tell your children that you are moving. As a parent, you have to help them focus on the excitement of traveling to a new place, living in a new home, and making new friends.

Tell your children about the move as soon as possible so that they will have enough time to spend with their friends. It is also important to get them involved in the process, so make sure to assign them age-appropriate tasks.

Create a budget and stick to it

Every move requires spending money. Even if the military is going to reimburse most of the costs of your move, it’s still important to have a specific PCS budget. Costs like hotel accommodations, meals out, and other incidentals can quickly add up, causing unneeded financial stress during your move. That’s why it’s best to set a realistic financial expectation.

Research your new duty station

One of the best things you can do before planning your move is to do a research about your soon-to-be home and community. In fact, as soon as your family receive new orders, you should start gathering information regarding things that will directly impact your overall quality of life, such as commute times, neighborhood amenities, schools, and proximity to hospitals and grocery stores.

Take inventory

A key aspect of a successful move is knowing exactly what's going with you. That’s why it’s important to do a thorough inventory of your belongings before they are packed and make notes of which items are packed in each box. The good news is technology has made this part easier than ever. You can use your computer and build a basic spreadsheet or use smartphone applications like Sortly or download a free home inventory software at Ready.gov.

In addition, taking photos using your smartphone or camera will help you record the condition of your goods prior to your move. This ensures that if anything is lost or damaged, the military will have the documentation necessary to reimburse you.

Make pet arrangements

Having a pet can add another layer of complexity to your PCS move, but with proper preparation, you can ease some of the stress of relocating for both you and your pet. Make sure to check state, base, and, if flying, airline regulations for pet-specific policies.

Bring your pets to the vet for a pre-move check-up to make sure they are healthy and refill any prescriptions they might have. You should also search for military-friendly vets in Corpus Christi TX to ensure your pets are well cared for.

Do a PCS purge

Get rid of excess stuff! Why opt for the extra trouble and expense to move rarely used items? As you prepare for your move, go from room to room and look for no-go items. Prepare a First Day Box

As you prepare for the actual move, you also have to consider what you and your family are going to need on day one in your new house. Regardless of how organized you are, you need to anticipate a little chaos on the first day or two.You have to set aside bare essentials. Your first day box will typically contain a change of clothes, cleaning supplies, even some important electronics. Make sure that the most vital and important items to help you ease into your new home are in there. Doing so will allow you to start fresh in your new home without having to unpack random boxes to find items that you need.

Research utilities

One task that you should not forget is setting up the utilities in your new home. Do some research in the neighborhood you are moving to. If possible, consider visiting ahead of time. Studying the community will help you look into setting up heat, electricity, and internet/cable if need be.

Stay positive and relaxed

A PCS move may be challenging but stressing about it will only make it worse. You have to stay focused on the positive things that this move will bring to your family. Encourage everyone to look at the bigger picture and don’t sweat the small stuff.

PCSing is hard work and it won't always go perfectly, no matter how hard you try. So take a deep breath, make lists, and go forth with minimal worries. It will be all get done!

While shopping for car insurance, I usually use a fake name/address with all my real information (DOB, driving record, etc) just so I don't get a bunch of annoying calls/emails from every company I get a quote from. The fake email address I always use got an email the other day, which basically said that when they ran a credit check they consumer reporting agency couldn't provide a full credit history (not surprising seeing as they were checking on a name that doesn't exist). The thing that concerns me is that being only 19, I also don't have much of a credit history (the only credit I do currently have is a card I got a month ago). I couldn't really tell from the email (since I didn't read it too closely, I was really just clearing out the fake inbox) but I'm not sure if they were saying We couldn't get a credit history on you, if we had been able to, the rate you were quoted could have been lower or something more drastic like because we couldn't find a credit history, the quote we gave is no longer valid and either they won't cover me or will charge way more. The apartment complex has filed a claim for the golf cart (it looked old) and the guy had a slight bump on his head (emt checked him out, everything looked fine but he went to the doctor) and he's filing a personal injury claim. My agent said no lawyer's are involved yet and it doesn't look like he's suing. There's also been damage to my car bumper but it's still drivable; hopefully I can pay out of pocket. Ive had my normal license (California) for 3 years and just got my motorcycle license. I am looking to buy a street bike, a sport bike specifically. I've looked at all the sporty bikes from 250 to 1000 and I plan on getting a 600 because I've been riding dirtbikes since I could walk so I know I'd get bored of a 250 but at the same time I know I'd kill myself on a 1000.
