MerMay drawing 2 - ferret/yellow bellied sea snake mermaid. Although sea otters are real life ferret mermaids, half-sea snake ferrets are perhaps even better. They have venom!

Hydrophis platurus better known as the yellow-bellied sea snake is a venomous species of snake from the subfamily Hydrophiinae (commonly known as the sea snakes). It is found throughout the entire tropical Indo-Pacific, from Africa's eastern coast to the west coast of North, Central, and South America, and from as far north as Japan to as far south as New Zealand. It is completely pelagic species which is often observed on oceanic drift lines, using surface currents and storms to move around the ocean. They are a moderately social species which maybe found in large groups often near floating debris. They hunt the pelagic fish that are seeking shelter; which the snakes capture via a backwards swimming motion and rapid lunge of the jaws. The ability to swim backwards is an unusual and distinguishing characteristic of the yellow bellied sea snake. All snakes require fresh water to survive and the yellow-bellied sea snake drinks precipitation that forms on the surface of sea water. Like that of other sea snakes, the venom of the yellow bellied sea snake is amongst the most potent on earth, several different neurotoxins and two other isotoxins, often causing intense skeletal muscle damage, paralysis, and renal failure. Thankfully bites on humans are very rare, often on fisherman who inadvertently catch them in fishing nets, and can be treated with either beaked sea snake anti venom or tiger snake antivenom. Females are larger than males reaching up to 35 inches (89cms) in length compared to males at up to 28 inches (71cms). Theses snakes sport a laterally compressed body with a paddle-like tail. They have a narrow elongated head with valved nostrils and palatine seal for excluding seawater. They have reduced scales and skin developed for and cutaneous gas exchange allowing the absorb some oxygen from the surrounding water through its skin whilst diving and swimming. The yellow-bellied sea snake, as the name implies, has a distinctive bicolor pattern with a yellow underbelly and brown back, making it easily distinguishable from other sea snake species. However they may appear more spotted or almost entirely yellow. Yellow-bellied sea snakes breed in warm waters; they are ovoviviparous with a gestation period around 6 months, with females giving birth to 2 to 9 young typically in tidepools. Under ideal conditions a yellow bellied sea snake may live up to 10 years.

One thing I’ve learned after reading about the most venomous snakes for five minutes is if you see a snake in the sea, get the shit out of there. Don’t even take the chance.

What is your favorite sea snake? In terms of behaviour, vibes, etc.
I adore yellow-bellied sea snakes! They're so beautiful, and also the first ones studied to prove that sea snakes can absorb oxygen from the water through their skin (radical!).

Also, Hydrophis elegans. The beauty! The grace!

HELLO PRESSURE FANDOM decided to my own take on Sebastian, trying to incorporate more traits from the animals his dna is mixed with. He’s got some mantis shrimp legs (don’t come at me for the anatomy of that front shrimp leg i knooooow it’s wrong i knoooow i just could NOT get that other joint in without it looking weird so it’s kind of a mix between spearer and smasher anatomy idk)
tried to give him some shark-like dorsal fins with some added flare because it’s fun, also gave him shrimp legs (mainly based off the zebra mantis shrimp, thats why he has stripes along his body), and i based him off a yellow-bellied sea snake which is why he, you guessed it, has a yellow belly. then ofc he still has that whale tail and the angler light and. idk. silver spinyfins are weird little things i wasn’t sure what to do for that.
fun stuff under the cut, also special thanks my my friend @//jo-io for some help with the design, you’re the best jay!! go follow them their art is so cool
