since people are asking for them, here are my unpopular marauders opinions

(note, and i mean this in the most serious way: please, for the love of god, if you don't agree, just scroll. there is no reason to cause drama over some unpopular opinions of some random tumblr user just because you don't agree with me.)

remus is my least favorite character. don't get me wrong, i love him to bits, he's just the least intriguing to me. he's the character we've been given most of; not only that, i find sirius and james' character, as well as peter's (and his betrayal), as far more interesting

i don't really like jegulus for the same reason as remus; the dynamic is interesting, there is a lot to work with there, including the death eater and order member dynamic, but i just find some ships as more interesting

most of the characters are written as super one-dimensional and therefore i do not like most fandom characterizations which is a crucial point, to me, in whether i read the fic. i like fics in which the characters are written as real people, with human emotions and flaws, and not some qualities thrown together

some wolfstar shippers are pretty much the most annoying people in fandom (coming from a wolfstar shipper). shipping the only consistent ship in this fandom does not make you inherently better than everyone else, and just because someone else splits wolfstar for other ships dynamics does not mean anything

the black sisters and the evans sisters, if written well, can be more interesting than the black brothers and i don't think we talk enough about them (i also find the black brothers are really interesting, and i need more fics in which the intensity of these dynamics are explored)

i dislike the main characterization of regulus in fandom, being a huge fan of morally grey regulus. however, each with their own characterization, and i'm no one to judge next. i find him to be a very interesting character, however, and i like fics that dive deeper into his character

people who ship jegulus and hate lily for no reason need to chill; furthermore, people who hate mary and lily for "getting in the way" of their mlm ships are... i'm not going to comment on this, but you probably know what i mean

"stan bambi" comments on snape videos are really annoying because the very same way we don't like (and sometimes get aggressive) over snape lovers attacking the characters we like, why are we doing that to other people?

i need more peter-centered fics, and i do not like him only being a sidekick or ignored. also, mary is also a very interesting character, and i don't think we credit her enough for it

dorlene > wolfstar

the girls are far more interesting than people make them out to be and i NEED an atyd-like fic (long canon compliant etc) from their povs. it's not a want, it's a need, and i might just write it myself, because i think that a fic like that has a lot of potential

dorcas is morally grey and i need more fics in which that is a thing

this might be my most unpopular opinion but i prefer lily to regulus; i find them both to be very interesting characters, but i find myself more drawn to lily

pretty privilege is REAL in this fandom. bet that if peter and snape were conventionally attractive, they would be as loved as evan, barty, and regulus

i do not see sirius as transfem but why do people have to be so pressed about this hc. lif you don't see it, shut up, move on with your day, and let people who see it do their thing; this fandom is TOO pressed about other people's hcs

Remus needs to know if kissing him changed things for Sirius, if everything pales in comparison for Sirius like it does for Remus. And he knows that Sirius is back to playing ladies man but he needs to know if they have something. Had something, even. But it’s just a question.

I don’t know why, but this all song is really giving that scene from ATYD. I know my analysis did not stick to that, but I think you can also interpret it differently, like I’ve also thought about it as Remus wanting to ask Sirius about his relationship with Mary and if kissing Remus that night changed anything. Ok this may come off as ramble-y but i just wanted on come in here gush abt how much I love your fics!! I'm a big fan of atyd so intially that's how i found your work -- through Sirius' perspective -- and i loved that shit (dare i say more than the original,, they're both amazing ofc I'm just biased coz Sirius is my fav character). I come from a super religious/conservative background and I have never related so much to a character with internalised homophobia -- like the resemblance was a little uncanny ngl lol.

But yeah,, than i read 'thtf' becoz i was craving some lesbian fics (coz the marauders' fandom is in a lesbian drought let's be real). And it was so good and i absolutely bawled my eyes out. You're writing i think especially shined in this fic and i remember i would go back an reread pages because they we're so beautifully written lol.

And then i read ur cowboy and zombie au fics (even tho I don't really ship jegulus/marylily) but they were still amazing and so, so fun!!

My favourite fic of yours by far tho is ur most recent fic, 'As the Worm Moon Dies'. I'm a sucker for fics that expand on the world-building/magic of hp because i feel like there is so much missed potential in the og hp series due to jkr neoliberal centrist politics (gag). I loved how u depicted magic in series as more of a spectrum and how every human has the capability for it. I loved how u described the elves and their enslavement becoz holy shit is that a horrible plot point in the og series (dw!! they liked being enslaved!!). Sirius as a death eater is so weird becoz canon sirius would never -- but it also shows just how much of an influence James and subsequently the Potter's had on his life. Ooooh also don't even get me started on the werewolf fighting rings and the hypocrisy of pureblood societies its absolutely so fascinating to me!! Ahh i've reread it so many times already lol. (and obviously, the wolfstar is *chefs kiss*)

I love ur writing so much i actually started reading the captive prince series solely so ic ould read ur fanfics on it lmao. (up to book 2 -- so far very interesting -- and wondering what Laurent's perspective could possibly contain).

Honourable mentions to ur nobleflower and emmary fics because they were awesome and ur characterisation of emmaline as a butch aloof lesbian is now absolutely cannon to me!!

- loved the softness of this??? idk how else to describe it? there’s usually a lot of angst to get through in a wolfstar fic because even if you’re doing an AU there’s usually the typical “sirius’ family literally sucks and is abusive so he has TRAUMA he has to work through” which is super valid and totally understandable, but the way this fic was set up kind of let the reader assume remus and sirius both grew up a lot when they were apart and dealt with their shit, which i think is totally realistic for them at the big age of 29!!! and i loved that!!

- the patience. that sirius has in this fic. i’m kind obsessed. again, i know sirius typically is a little explosive because of his trauma responses but this sirius, a mostly healed sirius, is such a treat because seeing him be able to communicate is so special and lovely

- i wish we had more ! i want the nitty gritty! i want more details about james and lily! it’s so weird going from fics that have multiple POV’s to one that’s just through remus’s eyes (haven’t read one like this since ATYD i think?) so it makes a lot of sense that we don’t see sirius james bonding or more insight into lily but i really really missed it (though again this is totally a personal thing and did not take away from how good this was)

- performing. i love. i miss. reading about musicians makes my heart soar. i also just love reading about people who are really good and talented at something and also genuinely love it, so this was really special to me! sirius being good at composing also just! UGH ! AGH! i love that man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

finally, i would literally do anything to read about their years at julliard. i know it purposely was not in the fic, but just know that i am now chopping at the bit to read them falling in love and just being at school for music like i would do actually anything for it. that is all.

What’s a girl to do when Maggie Steifvater offhandedly mentions on Twitter that she planned, but will never write, a TRC spinoff involving an 80,000 year old forest? Pando is a clonal colony of Aspen trees in Utah, and while it looks like thousands of individual trees, it’s actually a single organism connected by extensive underground root systems. But really this fic is about Blue taking Gansey to meet her dad’s side of the family and… let’s just say it doesn’t go well. Additionally Adam reconnects with his mother and starts a new job. Ronan adopts a teenage dreamer who is his karmic retribution for his own teen angst rebellion. Henry’s parents split up. I will write this, eventually. Probably. Maybe.

hi! in lieu of an introduction post, here is an essay nobody asked for of me relating moon song by phoebe bridgers to wolfstar :) this is largely based off of atyd, because that’s basically canon, at this point. this has, of course, been done before, so this is mostly just to get rid of my silly little obsession before i go insane.

starting off strong with the title, “moon song”, which already mentions the moon. personally i see it as a song from sirius to remus, although you could see it with switched povs from time to time.

phoebe apparently wrote this song about caring about someone who hates themselves, making you feel dumb for caring about them. if you express this worry to the person you care about, they might leave, because they put your well-being above their own. but you care too much to let that happen; and so little by little, you sacrifice parts of yourself in order to keep them close. this topic fits wolfstar very well, in my opinion. both sirius and remus probably hate themselves to some extent, sirius because of his upbringing and background, remus because he’s a werewolf, and both with many other little insecurities that we all have. and of course, they sacrifice themselves to keep the other close; remus with handling sirius’s original reluctance to acknowledge what they have going on as an actual relationship, handling his bursts of anger, handling his stupid, hurtful actions because he just can’t think. and then there’s sirius, who literally turned himself into an animagus just so he could keep remus safe and close during full moons, on top of also handling remus’s bursts of anger and the things he says while he’s angry. both very, very self-destructive without realising just how much they’re hurting the other.

and then we move on to the lyrics.

the first few lines refer to acts of chivalry that ends with you depending on the other, in the end. like being at a party, and getting a little too drunk, and so you have to carry the person who promised to walk you home instead. an incident which i’m convinced happened with wolfstar at some point.

then the 3rd and 4th lines, which compares falling in love with being pushed into the deep end of a pool, only you’re not ready and the pool feels bottomless. falling in love at the most unexpected of times, and falling so deep and hard it seems like there’s no end to it. i think this describes both remus and sirius very well.

first two lines, could be about grant or the countless girls sirius involved himself with.

but the last two lines is what really made me want to write this (insufferably long) post, because it’s a dog !!!! with a bird !!!!! at the door !!!!!!!! dogs bring dead birds or other dead animals to their owners thinking of it as a gift, while the owner would rather do anything than come anywhere near said gift. i take sirius to be this dog for obvious reasons, who is waiting for remus to love him again, bringing with him an unpleasant reminder of what happened to james and lily. while sirius thinks his presence might cheer remus up, hopes that, really, because what else is he supposed to do; remus doesn’t want anything to do with him, because just him alone reminds him of the horrible ends his best friends met, all at the fault of who he believes to be sirius, at the time.

skipping a couple of lines because this is already getting way too long and i’m sure most of you have stopped reading already.

if sirius could give remus control of the moon, he would. in fact, he would do anything to replace remus’s negative connotations with the moon with positive ones. he starts calling remus moony as affectionate nickname, turns into an animagus to make full moons less painful and more fun for remus, stays after every full moon until he’s sure remus feels better. but in the end, these efforts are for naught, because he’s suddenly ripped away from remus for 12 years without warning, and all positive memories remus has of the full moon are replaced with memories of nights spent alone, in so much more pain than he ever remembers feeling, with deep, aching yearning for the people that used to help him. if sirius could give remus the moon, he most definitely would; but he can’t.

remus is sick with the “disease” of being a werewolf. he’s married. he’s slowly driving himself to death by contributing so much to the war. in the end, he dies. but when he sees sirius again for the first time in 12 years, and something in him just clicks, when he realises that sirius wasn’t the traitor, he immediately pulls him close for a hug. clinging onto him, desperately trying to keep him close so he doesn’t slip away again. in the end, it’s futile; sirius slips from his hands like water would, and remus experiences one more gut-wrenching loss before he dies, as well.

but before sirius dies, remus still feels like crying when he sees him. he’s still a walking reminder of what happened, but this time, he’s also a walking reminder of what used to be. of simpler days when all they had to worry about was their next big prank. remus knows how scary it must have been for sirius, to be thrown in jail for years for a crime he would never dream of committing. sirius, the “killer”, had understood just about as much as remus understood, in these past few years. absolutely nothing.

and that concludes my mentally ill rant about fictional characters whose personalities and stories are almost entirely made up by their fandom !!! if you have read this far, thank you so much, i’m jules and i would love to make some new friends on here :)

Your response to the last ask got me thinking about a question that’s been asked a lot when it comes to marauders era fanfics. Is it misogynistic when people read a wolfstar fic and want the focus to be on Remus and Sirius? Or when they decide to read a jegulus fic (like your wonderful story) and expect most of the attention to be on James and Regulus? Or would it be the same reasoning as, say, someone choosing to read a Marlene and Dorcas fic, and wanting most of the focus to be on Marlene and Dorcas? Like, most people don’t want to read about Peter, and he’s a guy, right? I’ve heard a lot of people also justify it by saying that they just like to read about the dynamics of the marauders specifically. I don’t know… I think it’s definitely important to question what potential subconscious biases and prejudices are guiding certain opinions, but also to recognize that not everything needs to have a deeper meaning.

Hello lovely! There is totally nothing wrong with reading a Wolfstar fic or a Jegulus fic and wanting those characters to be the focus. Like full stop, that doesn't make you a misogynist or, idk, not a feminist or whatever. I kind of called that anon out because they didn't just say that they didn't like the multiple POVs in this fic, they specifically said they didn't like the girls POVs. And I legitimately meant it when I said I find that interesting because I do, I find it interesting that it is specifically the female characters we feel like we don't need to explore. Like you can even throw in Male OCs and people will be way more enthusiastic about getting to know them and their backstories than the canon female characters. Look at Sweater Weather for example right? Vaincre is as much about those male OCs as it is about Remus and Sirius even though Sweater Weather is a Wolfstar AU and no one is like "I didn't sign up for this" (or maybe people are but I haven't seen many of them). Or the way the fandom has totally fallen in love with Grant from ATYD. Like people love those chapters where it's just Remus and Grant even though ATYDs is a Wolfstar fic. Again, I am not saying that you have to be invested in Mary and Lily and Alice and Marlene. Like you don't. And there are totally valid, legitimate reasons I'm sure people could give me for why they just don't care about those characters. But. But. I also think you should take a minute and interrogate why it is specifically the female backstories you don't care about. Like that is all I'm asking, and maybe you come back with those valid reasons. But maybe you also come back realizing that you inherently assume that female characters and their stories are less compelling than male characters and their stories (also when I say "you" I don't mean you, person who asked this question, I mean like the universal "you"). SO again, I agree, everything does not have to have a deeper meaning, I just think that it does seem like this fandom is very willing to get invested in literally any male character and very resistant to developing the female characters.

Truly, the only other writer who does justice to the complexity and poignancy of being Remus Lupin is probably the legendary @mskingbean89 author of All the Young Dudes. If you enjoyed All the Young Dudes, you will love sarewolf's other now completed fic "that's the art of getting by", in which Remus gets custody of baby Harry and Sirius is found to be innocent. Things seem to be looking up, but the ugliness of past betrayals and bitterness of unresolved emotions still need to be dealt with. Sarewolf's current work "when covered in snow" is set in a different timeline where, as the tagline warns, "Just because everybody lives, doesn’t mean nobody is hurt."
