"you cant call X character from Y show a stereotypical presentation because I relate to a lot of it. I am not a stereotype" that doesn't make the character any less a stereotype. real life people cannot be stereotypes. personally relating to a character doesn't change the often decades or even centuries-old intention + message about a character.
#angel posts#stereotypes as they apply to characters + media is a critique of the representation#and often is a critique of how its the ONLY presentation#or a watered down one#or a comically exaggerated one#but all around handled and done without care or concern for the relevant group of people#none of this means they cant ever hit the mark and make some audience members#feel good about themselves#this doesn't mean that the rep is always 100% wrong#but it does mean that in a lot of ways#its doing more harm than good#because youll notice with stereotypes that theyre made by people who are not from the relevant group#who are relying on a lot of shorthands#and who often create the character to uphold hegemonic standards about XYZ#this doesnt make a real life person a stereotype#the question to ask is ''why do creators only want to show ONE type of person from X?''
