5 Kitchen Makeovers You Can Do on a Budget
If there's one room in the house that needs to be both functional and stylish, it's the kitchen. Thankfully, a few thrifty decisions and well-calculated splurges can make the space your own without breaking the bank.
For example, this homeowner knocked down a wall to create more openness between the dining and kitchen makeovers areas. Then they used recycled wood for the flooring and assembled and finished their own stock cabinetry.
  Upgrade the Appliances
Upgrading your kitchen appliances is one of the easiest ways to make a big impact on your space. Not only will new appliances improve aesthetics, but energy-efficient models can help you reduce your utility bills and support sustainability practices.
For this Birmingham kitchen, designer Melanie Pounds mixed cherished hand-medowns with new white cabinetry to create an airy, functional room that reflects the homeowners' style. She also removed an unnecessary block of cabinets to visually expand the ceiling height and added open shelves for pretty dishes. A modern backsplash and new flooring finish the look. Adding a breakfast nook and more storage also improved functionality in this updated kitchen makeovers in Sydney.
  Paint or Refinish Your Cabinets
You can give your kitchen a fresh, updated look by painting or refinishing the cabinets. But make sure to thoroughly clean them before you start working. Use a degreaser to remove any built-up residue or cooking grease.
To avoid getting paint on the walls and countertops, protect them by laying down a dropcloth ($7, Amazon). After that, use a high-density foam roller or a brush to apply a stain-blocking, oil-based primer. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Once the primer is dry, you can paint your cabinet doors, face frames and drawer fronts. For the best results, use enamel paint designed for trim and cabinets.
Add a Backsplash
A backsplash can completely transform the look and feel of a kitchen. It also provides a barrier between countertops and cabinets to protect walls from spills, splashes and other mishaps.
Backsplashes come in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes, so there are endless options for your home. A simple tile backsplash adds style to a kitchen, but you can also choose a textured or patterned option for a unique design element.
For a budget-friendly DIY, try using peel and stick backsplash tiles. This repurposes existing tiles for a stunning upgrade! You can also add a rustic touch with beadboard, faux brick or even paint.
Add New Flooring
If you’re tired of your kitchen’s color palette or flooring, a few power tools and elbow grease can transform the room without breaking the bank. Paint and a new backsplash are easy and effective, while cork floors and granite countertops offer an elegant touch that’s affordable enough for many homeowners to tackle on their own.
With a few thrifty decisions and well-calculated splurges, this dated kitchen was revamped for better function and style. Removing one window and moving a wall opened up natural light, while white shiplap adds farmhouse flair to the room. The rearranged layout also allowed for more storage and a welcoming breakfast bar.
Add a Breakfast Nook
As the name suggests, breakfast nooks are a perfect spot to enjoy a morning meal. But they also make a great place for kids to complete their homework assignments, color or draw, or play table games with family members. Their coziness and ample table and counter space make them ideal for these activities.
In addition to seating, you can use a breakfast nook as an opportunity to add some decor. If you have an open floor plan, a patterned banquette like this one by @noellewrightstyles can be used as a room divider.
Opt for a neutral color palette to keep the area feeling calm and clean. You can also introduce patterns through textiles and upholstery for a more eye-catching aesthetic.
Add More Storage
If you’re looking to update your kitchen and boost its functionality, consider adding more storage solutions. Not only will these additions improve your home’s aesthetic, but they’ll also make it easier to cook and clean.
Installing new cabinets is one of the most effective ways to add more storage space to your kitchen. However, if you don’t have the budget or space to upgrade your cabinets, installing shelves is another great option. Shelves can be used to store your everyday kitchen items, or they can be installed for more decorative purposes, like displaying your favorite cookware or glassware.
Another way to add more storage is by installing a hanging pot and pan rack on the ceiling. This will give you more room to store your cookware and keep it out of sight when not in use.

Summary: It all started with a stupid drinking game...
A/N: this is the One Direction wattpad-style fanfic that's been haunting me for so long. beware of that and the fact that this is unedited hahaha...
Tumblr media
“You know the rules, girls. Whoever wins this round of rock-paper-scissors is It.”
You and your three friends, warm and bubbly from 2 rounds of shots at this point in the evening, assume your battle stances and stick your hands into the center of your table. Four hands make a square over the scattered layer of empty decorative shot glasses from the bar in the club.
There’s an air of electric excitement that comes with this game, lovingly nicknamed Hunter-Gathering. Whoever is It gets a target and has to pursue that target in hopes of bringing ‘home’ free drinks for everyone the rest of the night. But no matter how attractive the target is, you can't ever bring them home.
“Wait, wait!” Lia chimes in. “I can’t be It this time. I did it twice already and my ass still hurts from the last time.”
Dani nods seriously. “Fair enough. That means the odds are upped for the rest of you.”
“So, we’re just gonna ignore that ass thing,” another friend, Alexa, looks around the table with confused eyes.
“Do you actually want me to give you the details?” Lia smiles slowly at her from across the table.
Alexa’s face brightens with her own smile, worry evaporated. “You know what? I don’t! Never mind.”
The game begins and somehow you find yourself the lone rock amongst two pairs of scissors. Alexa and Dani laugh with relief because they don’t have to put in any work tonight. You roll your eyes to the heavens and silently question your karma.
“Are you ready to pick your target?”
“I don’t really have a choice, do I?”
“Nope!” Dani grins.
She steps forward and grabs a clean face mask out of her clutch bag and wraps it around your eyes, careful not to muss your makeup or hair. Three pairs of hands rest on your shoulders and you let them spin you lightly around a few times. Not enough to get you dizzy but just enough to make sure you don’t know what direction you’re facing anymore.
“Alright,” Dani’s voice sounds out over the music of the club. “Take your pick!”
You stick your hand out blindly and someone unties the makeshift blindfold. Everyone follows the line your hand makes all the way to a tall figure standing by the side of the bar.
He’s probably the most handsome man any of you have seen in a while. There's an intimidating aura emanating from him. You figure it's the understated all-black outfit complete with the heinously expensive watch he's wearing and the sheer height of him as he towers over people near him at the bar.
“Oh my god,” Dani whispers as you all take in the stranger’s face.
“We can finally get top shelf vodka,” Alexa pretends to wipe a tear from the corner of her eye.
“Not bad,” Lia hums in appreciation.
“Okay, why is everyone acting like I bagged him already?” Your voice grows high with nerves. “I'm pretty sure I have, like, a 2% chance of interesting him."
“What are you so worried about?” Dani crosses her arms at you. “Just do whatever you did to get those history nerds to help you out that one time."
"This is not the same thing. Those guys parted their hair 90/10 unironically and thought Diva Cups are for when you don't want to hold your pee when you stand in line for roller coasters."
"You're kidding," Lia gasps. You wish you were.
"Well, just pretend he's one of them anyway." Dani suggests, "Every guy is the same."
You can't argue with that logic.
“I mean, I can try flirting with him, but he’s probably so used to people throwing themselves at him. I don’t think anything I do would, like, make a dent, you know?”
“Babe, no. No—listen to me, okay?” Alexa takes you by the shoulders and forces you around so you can see how serious she is.
“Tonight is the last free night of vacation. After tonight, we have less than a day to get over our hangovers, pack up the Airbnb, and then catch our 6am flight back home to start the spring term. Our last night of freedom lies in your hands.”
“But, what if—”
“No ‘but’s. Do you see yourself? Do you see your skin in this fresh white two piece? Have you seen how your tits look in this off the shoulder top? That poor man doesn’t stand a chance!”
Lia murmurs her agreement in the background and Dani mentions something about fearing for the guy's soul. You think about the freakishly good pictures you all took in the stylish club bathroom when you first arrived.
“I see your point.”
You turn back toward the bar to review your target. He sips from a dark green bottle as he looks around at the people on the dance floor between your table and the bar. As he continues to scan the room, he locks eyes with you. You hold his gaze even though your instincts are screaming at you to duck for cover. Surprisingly, he gives a small smile and raises his bottle in salute.
"See, you got the hardest part down already. Just fake the rest until you make it."
You chance a look back in his direction only to catch him staring in the direction of the table. When he catches your gaze again, he whips his head away, cheeks tinging pink under the soft yellow lighting at the bar.
Alexa cackles and starts detailing all the drinks she wants made with the top shelf vodka. Lia and Dani discuss leaving early to go back and clean up the apartment so it’s clean in case you break the rules and bring this guy back for the night.
“Uh, aren’t you guys moving a little fast?”
“Aren’t you moving a little slow,” Alexa counters.
“Hold on, Lex.” Dani turns to you. “You know you don’t actually have to do this if you don’t want to, right? Hunter-Gathering is just a game, there's no pressure.”
For all their poking and teasing, you're reminded right then and there that your friends would never put you in a situation where they thought you were actually at any risk. The weight you felt on your shoulders lightens somewhat.
“No, no, I definitely still want to play, I just don’t want you guys to get your hopes up.”
“I believe in you.”
Lia bumps shoulders with you quietly. She’s not the most affectionate, so you know she really means it.
“I’ll do my best.”
You let them tweak you a little bit, fixing stray hairs and wiping away smeared lip gloss and hiking up your skirt, giving you their drink orders, before you grab your purse and phone and push in your stool.
Tumblr media
When you finally make it to the bar, he’s in the same spot as you first found him in. He spots you once you get close enough and naturally makes room for you. You set your bag on the bar countertop before hopping up on the empty stool immediately in front of him. The movement causes your skirt to ride up even more and you’re glad you only let Lia hike it up one inch instead of three.
Dani's advice about treating this guy like any other scrub from school reverbs in the back of your head right as the nerves start to set in. With the guys in your art history class, your grade was on the line. There was no room for hesitation when you could barely draw a stick figure, much less write an essay analyzing what an old painting style could tell you about the dairy economy in a certain town like some of your classmates were doing. It was because you were desperate that you were suddenly able to transform into a femme fatale. It also helped that these guys quivered at any interaction with an adult woman.
Tonight's drinks are on the line, you tell yourself. As best you can, you try to trick yourself into entering the same mindset you were in when you would lay on the charm extra thick for the art history guys.
You let the corner of your mouth lift up in a coy smile while you survey the bar. The bartender is moving back and forth quickly to handle the high demand. A second later the girl next to you leaves her spot with a tray of 8 bright pink drinks, practically glowing in the dark. You wonder briefly if you should try to get a round of those for the table.
“—one of those before?”
His voice is deep and pleasant. When you give him a look over your shoulder, you have to suppress a gasp. Up close he's even more handsome. You really have your work cut out for you.
“What?"
"That neon pink drink," he nods back in the direction of the girl who'd taken the cotton candy pink drinks with her. "I was wondering if you'd tried them before."
“No, I haven’t,” you smile, letting your lips part slowly. His eyes dart from your painted eyes to the colored stretch of your mouth and then quickly back up. “Have you?”
“No. But I like to try new things.”
You purse your lips as if in thought, something you've seen other girls do while flirting with guys at school. “You must be pretty unpredictable, then.”
“Huh? Well, I wouldn’t say that.” He stammers a bit and nearly drops his beer bottle trying and failing to put it down. All the intimidation you felt coming from him earlier seems to have disappeared.
“I was just kidding.”
Like it has a mind of its own, your hand reaches out to rest on his arm reassuringly while you continue to laugh at him. His features clear up then and a relieved smile blooms on his face, bringing out an adorable dimple with it.
“You’re teasing me,” he realizes with a good natured huff and steps into your touch.
“You seem kinda fun to tease.” You let your hand linger a little longer before finally pulling it back.
“It’s kinda fun. You're pretty good at it.”
Oddly enough, this isn't as difficult for you as you thought it was going to be. In fact, you find yourself naturally tilting your head and fixing him with an intrigued look from under your lashes. He takes the opportunity to look you over as well, a small smile on his lips.
The personal attention does make you a little nervous despite the fact that it’s positive. So you dig in your purse to avoid looking directly at him for too long and to give your hands something to do. You brush up against a tube of lip gloss, pull it out, and reapply some to your lips.
You look back at him when you realize he’s grown quiet, only to find him following the movements of the gloss brush tracing the curve of your lips, cheeks dusted pink and eyes half-closed like he's in some sort of trance.
Experimentally you press your lips together and then purse them to make sure the gloss is distributed evenly. The man doesn't blink once. Suddenly, all his expensive apparel and large stature aren’t so intimidating.
"Is there something on my face," you smirk.
He slow blinks down at your mouth twice before realizing you're speaking again. His eyes grow wide and he raises a ringed hand to rub at the back of his neck. The movement rustles the hair covering his ears, revealing their pink tips. Cute.
"Just looking."
You laugh a little at him again. He marvels at the way the club lighting dances around in your glossy smile.
"So, how come I've never seen you here before?"
"Well...it's the first time me and my friends have come here."
"I see." He pivots to face you and leans his closest elbow on the counter of the bar. "Are you guys new to the area?"
"You could say that, yeah."
He raises an eyebrow when you don’t elaborate. Without looking away, he raises his hand to signal to the bartender that he wants another drink. When the bartender runs right over, you realize this guy actually might be a big deal. Silently you pull your card out of your wallet as the bartender makes their way over. You figure you’ll have to spend some money before you can really ask someone like him to buy drinks for your table.
"What'll it be,” the bartender asks.
"Two of those pink drinks please," he says and before you can place any order the bartender zooms away.
While the bartender starts preparing the drinks, you turn toward him.
"Who said I wanted the pink drink?"
He grins down at you, a dimple now popping up in each cheek. "Who said it's for you?"
"I'm pretty sure it's for me."
"And what makes you so sure?" He takes a step closer to you.
"Just a hunch," you hum before crossing your legs.
The white fabric of your skirt hikes up your thighs again with the movement. You smooth your palms over the soft material.
"Nice skirt."
"Yeah? You like it?"
"I like it," he admits quietly.
"And the top?" You gesture toward the pair of straps on the matching tube top, manicured nails gliding over your décolletage. He wets his lips.
"The top too."
He reaches out one large hand to one of the straps that have fallen over your shoulder. The drag of his fingers against your bare arm as he fixes it makes you shiver. You lament the loss of contact when pulls his hand back.
The bartender arrives with your drinks then, startling the both of you out of the little staring competition that had spontaneously started. The pink drink seems to glow from within, topped with whipped cream and full of little round ice cubes made from some sort of darker rose syrup floating in the liquid like lava in a lava lamp. The color barely prepares you for the thick sweetness that floods your mouth on the first sip.
"Oh, that's kinda..."
He huffs a laugh around his own first swallow and nods in agreement.
"Not what you wanted?"
"It's just really sweet. You like it?”
He shrugs. “It’s alright. But—"
The way he cuts himself off has you confused for a moment before he's reaching towards you cautiously. You're not too sure what's going on until you feel the pad of his thumb swipe over the corner of your lips carrying away some of the whipped topping from the drink. Your eyes widen when instead of wiping the cream on one of the cocktail napkins available on the counter he brings his thumb to his own lips. In a fraction of a second the cream is gone, but you're left feeling a rush of fluttering warmth on the side of your mouth and in the center of your chest.
"You think your friends would like these?” He slides his drink to the side so he can lean on his elbow and turn to you again. Now's your chance.
“Um, I don’t think this is really their style.”
“What is their style?”
You rattle off their drinks of choice, making sure to mention their favorite brands with a sigh. Of course, whenever you play this game, the brands can change depending on the budget of whoever’s buying. This time, you make sure to name drop as much as possible, per Alexa's request.
“Sounds like your friends really know what they like.”
“Yeah, they have really…unique tastes.” You falter a little under his amused stare. “But we don’t always drink that way. I mean, not every bar even carries all those to begin with.”
“That’s true.” He nods. “This bar has every single of them, though. Pretty lucky, huh?”
“Yep,” you chirp. You’re not sure if you’re in trouble or not because he’s still smiling. He seems to be onto the game, but doesn’t seem bothered by it.
“Well, it would be a shame not to welcome you all to the city. Get whatever you want. My treat.”
“Are you sure?”
You place your hand on his arm again and squeeze for good measure. You don’t miss the way his large bicep flexes under your touch. After a beat, he brings his hand up to grasp yours and holds it while signaling to the bartender again. You give him a blindingly bright smile and he strokes his thumb over your knuckles.
He asks the bartender to ‘take care’ of your table tonight on him, and you realize then that you’ve won the game. The victory isn't nearly as sweet as the pink drinks from earlier. The rules prohibit you from bringing him home or going over to his place. And even if it wasn't prohibited, your vacation is basically over.
“Where are you and your friends from?
You take his hand between yours and play with some of the rings on his fingers. They’re beautiful together in an eclectic way and you wonder if someone chose them for him.
“It’s a kind of small city, not like this one. It’s really just our university and then a few surrounding towns.”
“What made you guys move here then?"
"Oh, Right." You feel guilty. "Me and my friends are just here for vacation."
He blinks at you but takes the news in stride. "Well, if you want—I know the city pretty well since I have a place here—maybe I can give you a tour of the town later this week."
"I'd love that, I really would. But we're actually leaving tomorrow."
"For real?” His eyes grow wide and he looks down at your linked hands before looking over your face. You're shocked to see his features fall.
"Yeah, it sucks."
“Damn,” he smiles bittersweet at the floor. “I wish we’d bumped into each other sooner.”
“I absolutely agree," the sound of Alexa's voice rings loud in your ear.
“Uh, hello. Did you need me for something?" Your voice is high and tight as you fix her with an accusatory stare. You're not 100% positive, but it seemed like you and he were having a moment.
"No, babe, I just wanted to come over and show you my beautiful drink. I wanted to come show my gratitude to you both for making sure we have a good last night. The girls will appreciate that. Thank you, kind sir."
“Name’s Namjoon. And no need to thank me,” he smiles at the exchange between you two and sticks out his hand. Alexa daintily lays her hand in his and he lets out an incredulous laugh before playing along and raising it to his lips.
"What a gentleman," she coos before pinching lightly at the skin of your exposed back. It's a clear message just for you, telling you that there's about to be a change in plans. "What were you guys discussing?"
"I was actually about to offer up our booth. There's more than enough room for your table if you wanted to move. Me and my team—friends definitely wouldn't mind the company."
“You don’t have to do that!” You pipe up, suddenly shy. But it's quickly dashed away as Alexa pulls out her phone and opens up the groupchat.
"Let me just ask our friends if they’d like that."
You already know the answer, so you sigh quietly and gather up your card, phone, and purse. You can’t say you won’t miss the privacy from when it was just you and Namjoon, but you’re glad to be with your friends again as well.
Tumblr media
The move from your little table to the VIP booth is lightning fast. By the time you get your own drink, Lia and Dani are already clutching their things and vibrating with excitement near the ropes leading to the VIP booth. A few of Namjoon’s friends are chatting with them from the other side of the ropes.
Once your group trickles in, you don't miss how they all arrange themselves in the booth so you're forced to sit on the end next to Namjoon with barely any space. The only options are to let one of your legs hang off the edge of the booth the whole time or sit practically half in his lap. Alexa winks at you over the first sip of her next very expensive drink.
Namjoon's friends are occupied by your friends re-telling some of the more exciting parts of the beginning of your vacation. Some story about how 'someone' lost their top while trying to jet ski. You send a weak glare to Lia as she tries to get them to guess just whose top it was. That's what you get for experimenting with spaghetti strings, you suppose.
"Do you guys like to dance," one of his friends says after a while of vibing to the music once the chatter cools down. Hoseok, you think his name was.
"Yes, definitely." Dani remarks while re-applying lip gloss. "You know who's a great dancer?"
"Who?" Hoseok looks around excitedly.
"She's gonna say me," you groan. "Which is not even true but let’s just all move down there already, no more 20 questions."
"Just one more," she pouts. "Namjoon, do you like to dance?"
He looks down at you once he's also out the booth, that little amused smile back on his lips.
"Well, it's not really part of my day job, but I don't mind it too much."
"What's your day job," you blurt out.
"I'm a...musician."
"A musician!" Alexa rushes over to you to link arms. "Did you hear that? Namjoon’s a musician."
"I don't recognize you," Lia says and Hoseok and another one of his friends burst into quiet laughter behind her.
"You definitely won't find Joon’s pics anywhere, that's for sure," one of his friends says. The rest of them dissolve into another fit of giggles.
The club lights hide the muted pink tinge his cheeks take on, and Namjoon leads the way to the dance-floor with a chagrined roll of his eyes.
"You think he's really a musician?” You whisper to Alexa and Lia. Dani is somewhere up ahead, already dancing.
"Maybe technically. Going off the way his friends keep laughing, he's probably, like, a failed SoundCloud rapper or something."
"No failed SoundCloud rapper wears Gucci like that," Lia motions with her chin to some piece of Namjoon’s outfit.
"That's true," you hum.
"Rich parents," Alexa says simply.
You and Lia consider it and then nod.
As you settle on the dance floor, you feel the rest of your nerves drift away. Lia comes over to take a selfie with you, and the two of you flirt with the camera until she's satisfied with the photos you've taken. She grabs your hand and makes a show of spinning you around and you figure that this is how the night will go before you stumble out around 2 or 3am and drunk pack for the flight home the next morning. You let her lead you back, further into the crowd before you bump into someone.
Namjoon's large hand comes to stabilize you at your waist and Lia acts like nothing happened before dancing away, phone light illuminating her sneaky smile.
"You good?" Namjoon's voice is soft in your ear.
"Y-yeah."
"You wanna dance, or should I let you go?"
Your friends shamelessly all look at the way he curves himself around you, all with their thumbs up in encouragement. You're reminded of the way you did the same a few nights prior when Dani was getting hit on by some cute guy at a different club.
At that time it felt fun hyping her up and watching her make a move, seeing how enamored this random guy was with your friend. Of course he is, you thought at the time, she's amazing. And you remember that this is probably what's driving them tonight as well with you and Namjoon.
You chance a look at him and realize that he's come to rest his cheek lightly near your temple, a soft look in his gaze as he awaits your answer.
"Sure, let's dance."
Tumblr media
Namjoon was telling the truth when he said he wasn't all that into dancing. But he put in enough work to be able to follow you and meet you halfway while you were grinding on him to the music.
Even when you shyly stepped away after the first few dances to return to your squealing friends, you loosened up over time with more music and drinks and found yourself naturally ending up on him again. The first few songs turned into more and more and soon you were face-to-face, with his thigh wedged between yours and a heavy palm on your lower back guiding you to the beat.
You're not sure when you decided to abandon your friends and his, but at some point you did return to the booth under the guise of checking your phones. And you did check your phone first. But soon he was crowding you toward the wall by the booth and leaving you with no air of your own.
"You're really leaving tomorrow," he sighed into a bruise he was trying to leave near the hollow of your throat. "Or did you just say that because I was some creep at a bar."
"I never thought you were a creep."
He looks down at you with disbelief before getting distracted by your kiss-swollen lips.
"I mean it. I'm just a little shy sometimes."
"What do you have to be shy about when you look like this, huh?"
"Stop," you laugh lightly and look away from him.
He'd made a comment earlier about how much he liked the pristine white two piece you wore, but you'd been inching his hand up your skirt then. Now, one of his thumbs rubs an idle pattern just below the curve of your breast.
"No, but seriously. Are you actually leaving tomorrow?"
"Yeah. The new term starts for us all in a few days."
"So, leave in a few days," Namjoon whines.
"That's not enough time to get ready for the term."
"But I'll be so alone without you."
He gives you an exaggerated pout that splits into a real smile when you snort at his stupid expression. He pulls you to him just a smidgen tighter then.
"Does this usually work with other girls?"
"I don't know. Never tried it with other girls," he frowns a little at you.
"Sure."
"You know me and the team almost went to Club BigHit last Saturday?"
"Oh, really? That's kinda funny." You try to imagine what might have happened if he'd come to the same club you went to earlier.
"Yeah," Namjoon's voice grows quiet. "If I hadn't gotten sick then we would have met last week."
"Yeah, maybe."
"You sure you can't miss a few days of the term?"
"Yes, I'm sure." You let out an exasperated laugh. "You can't really be this upset that an actual stranger is just passing through your life."
"No, I know. I just—," he lets his head fall forward until he's touching his forehead to yours. "It was like something clicked when I saw you. I feel like I need more time with you."
"Oh," your voice comes out a little breathier than you expected.
The same look that had flashed across his face when you first came up to him finally gets to rest on his features. You want to let him down gently because you really can't play catch up during the first week of school.
"Tell you what. I can't miss the beginning of the term but if you make a song with my name in it and it gets...say, 50,000 listens, I'll buy a ticket that same day and come meet you. Wherever you are."
He pins you with a look then, inquisitive and dark. His eyes scan your open expression for something, before whatever he finds passes the test. He stands up tall.
"And it just needs to have 50,000 listens?"
In your mind you were thinking it would be too lofty for a failed SoundCloud rapper, but something in his tone sounds like he's rising to the challenge and it makes you nervous. You spent a lot on this vacation, you can't afford to actually fly out so soon if he somehow managed to get the listens and call your bluff. Besides, targets are off limits.
"Um, actually make that 150,000. And it has to have my area code in it too." You rattle off the three digits to him and he quickly types your conditions into the notes app on his phone.
"Is that it?"
"That's it, I guess."
"Deal."
Namjoon pockets his phone and leans back into your space. Any worries you had clawing to the forefront of your mind vanish when he presses soft lips to yours once more.
Tumblr media
A month passes.
You don't end up having a one-night-stand with Namjoon because it wouldn't be fair to your friends when they'd clicked with a target but didn't take them home. That and because Dani got sick on the dance floor from mixing strawberry daiquiri with one too many pink drinks. But you do pass on your full number after he very nearly begs you to give it to him while packing into a cab.
And then he never used it.
It's not that you were expecting much, but when a month passes with not so much as word from him, you figure he forgot about you and your little bet.
Then 2 months pass.
Even though you know that you only spent a fraction of a day with him, you can't help thinking about Namjoon. Namjoon and his pretty eyes and pretty words that made you think there was some sort of connection there. You realize after the first two weeks back that you don't have his number but by the time 2 months pass, you realize that was definitely on purpose.
4 months pass.
You're over it, swamped with end of term work like finals and grading and putting in hours at work. But every time your friends suggest a little fun and hooking you up with someone, every time someone asked for your number at a coffee shop, you said no. Because you're over it and you're busy and not at all disappointed for how hard you fell for the lies some failed SoundCloud rapper fed you on a vacation one time.
19 weeks pass.
You're all in Lia's apartment, basking in the first few days of the end of classes even if it means finals are a few days later. Alexa is playing her favorite playlist on the speakers and you're taking a break to get some coffee going in the small kitchenette.
While the coffee machine starts up you wander back to the main room. Alexa is leaning over to turn the music up, one of her favorite songs just now coming up.
"Who's this again," Dani pipes up from her spot on the couch. "It's that one guy's collab with the Bulletproof Girlscouts, right?"
"Yep," Alexa checks the song title before sighing. "This song is so old now."
"True, but it's my favorite one on the whole album."
"I guess it really has been two years since his last album, huh." Dani muses and then goes back to her practice problem set.
You try not to laugh at how cute Alexa looks sulking because her favorite artist hasn't put out any music in so long.
"Why don't you just play his new stuff," Lia says.
"He's on indefinite hiatus. This is as new as it gets."
Lia picks up her own phone, showing it to the group.
"He released a new single this morning."
"What!"
Alexa scrambles from her seat to grab her headphones and jam them into her phone. You all know how she gets about her music and let her have a moment to soak up the new song while you get up to check on the coffee.
It takes a few minutes to get cups out and put everything together since everyone has different tastes, so you're in the middle of pouring creamer when you hear a chorus of screams.
"Why are we screaming?"
You rush into the main room again only to be bombarded with music from the speaker, this time turned up as high as it can go. What must be the new song comes through the speaker, the bass vibrating on the ground as the speaker pumps.
"Okay, yes, new song. It's good but I don't get—"
"Just listen to the fucking bridge," Dani's voice comes out incredibly shrill as she cuts you off.
The beat surges for the bridge and suddenly the lyrics turn into the artist growling about some girl he met at the club with the prettiest little white outfit he'd ever seen. Saying something that sounds oddly like your name, although you figure that can't be right. But then the next verse has your name in it too, and the next one, and the next one.
Your feet take you to where Alexa's phone is plugged in and you pick up the phone to look at the song. It's indeed a song by her favorite artist, a prolific and mysterious rapper who's never shown his face and who'd been on hiatus from making music. The song title is simple, a small string of numbers that look suspiciously like your area code.
When you let out a tiny gasp, your friends let out more excited shrieks. You ignore them in favor of thumbing through the music app to the artist's page where the new single lies at the top of his discography. To the right of all his songs are the stream counts. Most of his older songs have a few dozen million or so. This brand new one sits at a modest 4 million, but the numbers trickle up as the app updates them in real time.
"What the hell?"
"I know!" Alexa cries, tears shining in her eyes. "I can't believe we sat in a VIP booth with him and I didn't even recognize his stupid voice!"
"What are you gonna do," Dani smiles widely at your stunned face. "Are you gonna call him?"
"I don't have his number," you say simply. Your voice comes out monotone with shock.
"You didn't get his number?" Alexa starts crying for real.
"People are blowing my phone up about this," Lia says once the song ends and begins again on a loop. "You might want to turn off your phone. It's just a matter of time until people start snooping around."
"Right."
You grab your phone from your pocket. On instinct you scan through your socials one last time before turning it off. There's a startling number of texts, calls, emails, and notifications on your social media apps. Curiosity gets the best of you and you open up one of them only to find your name trending as the top hashtag. Clicking on it brings up a bunch of tweets both from fans raving about the new song and wondering who the muse is, to random accounts with identical names in the handle all claiming to be said muse.
"Oh my god, he tweeted!" Dani shoves her phone into your hands.
As of right now [2:38pm] we're at 5.76 million streams. That's more than 150,000...
"What does that mean," she asks you.
"It means...he wants me to fly out to see him. Today."
"Oh my god."
Alexa screams again and at this point you've lost count of how many that is. Lia gets out of her chair and tucks her chin over your shoulder to read the post herself.
"You need to go," Alexa shouts. "I'll help you pack, let's go."
"What about finals?"
"Are you—are you actually thinking of not going because of finals?"
"I mean—"
"If you want me die, just say that," she does something with her mouth that looks like a manic smile.
"What Lex means to say is that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm sure even the profs would understand."
You're not sure what to say. First of all, you still don't have his number. Second of all, you're not sure how to fight through all the other accounts claiming to be you to let him know you saw the song. Third, you don't even know where to fly to. Fourth—
A Twitter notification chimes from your phone and a deadly hush falls over everyone. You go to your DM inbox with shaking fingers only to find a message request from an unknown sender. When you open the request, it's from Namjoon's agency.
Good afternoon,
You are being contacted today because one of our artists wishes to meet you. If you consent to the meeting, please review the flight information and tentative itinerary below and respond with your address and contact information. Please also note that the travel plans are for today [MM/DD/YYYY], so your response at your earliest convenience would be much appreciated. If you would like to go but cannot make it today—
"Do you think they'll send a car or should I book her a ride to the airport now?" Dani turns to Alexa.
"They'll probably send one to make sure the schedule is followed."
"That's true but what about—"
Lia taps you on the shoulder, startling you out of your stupor.
"There's a convenience store two doors down. Whatever you buy we can put in one of my suitcases and you can just take that. There's probably not enough time to go all the way back to your place."
"I—yeah, okay."
Tumblr media
7 hours later finds Alexa, Dani and Lia finished with studying for the night. The entertainment channel is playing on the TV and the three of them have their heads bent over their phones and laptops, refreshing all the major gossip sites for updates.
"Maybe she's not even there yet," Dani sighs when the page she just refreshed shows no new posts.
"Yeah, I mean we still don't even know where she is," Lia says while putting her laptop to sleep. "What if they made her sign an NDA?"
"Even if they did, she'd probably still tell us once she got there. She's probably just busy killing time on the plane."
"She's sleeping!" Alexa screams a second later.
"Huh? How do you know that?"
"Check his instagram," is all she says before frantically typing a message to you about souvenirs.
Lia looks over at Dani's phone as she pulls up Namjoon's page. The rest of the layout is bare given his up until recent hiatus and the fact that he never posted any type of selfie. The video uploaded a mere 20 seconds ago undoes all the previous minimalism of the entire account.
The post isn't even of Namjoon. It's a black and white 5 second video of the top half of your naked back and shoulders, the rest of your body covered by the sheets. One of your arms is raised to cover your head with a pillow. The only sign of Namjoon is the arm that reaches out from the bottom of the frame, making it clear that he took the video himself. His hand reaches out to trace a heart over the skin of your shoulder blade. The caption reads:
Thanks for keeping your promise

Losers
Part 2 of bad boy! Yunho, part 1 here
pairing — bad boy! Yunho x reader (fem)
genre — angst with a sprinkle of smut, fluff.
word count — 4k
warnings — explicit language, lots of kissing, (almost) handjob, talk about inner self and emotions.
synopsis — After the night of the dare, Yunho has to cope with his new -to him- self. Realizing that getting you out of his head was impossible, he decides to visit you. However, you misunderstand the reason he came to see you, but he needs to make himself clear.
A/N: first of, thank you all for appreciating the first part & sending me so nice messages! Secondly, I noticed (once again) that I can’t write angst to save my damn life, so I’m sorry again if this one’s messy or doesn’t reach your expectations. Your feedback is very much appreciated, please don’t stay silent :’)
Tumblr media
Everything was spinning around him. The lights, even though dim, seemed too bright for him and his red eyes, the music was too loud and bothersome, the accrual smoke was choking him,  Yunho’s head was throbbing but his thoughts were clear in his mind. You. That green poison he’s been smoking and all the alcohol he’s consumed, did nothing. You’re still living, rent free, in his mind and he can’t do anything to get you out of there. The way your lips had nibbled on his neck and the way you’d looked at him, that night, when his hands were under your shirt were still in his mind. You looked so innocent, yet so confident. So helpless, yet so determined to win the game and he was just the conduit for that, nothing more.
Yunho walked slowly towards Hongjoong’s crowded living room and flopped on the couch clumsily. His legs spread in an attempt to feel his body and his hands rested on each side of his body as he swallowed a few times with effort. The aforementioned man has been gone for a while now. Last time he saw Hongjoong, was when a girl was dragging him into his bedroom, both probably too drunk and ready to relieve all the accumulated sexual tension built through drinking and dancing on each other. His eyes couldn’t stay open anymore, he let them fall shut as his head rested on the back of the couch. He needed some quiet for once, maybe he should leave but only after he feels ready to walk to his own apartment. He knew this would happen and he was wise enough not to ride his motorcycle that night. Every time he’s in Hongjoong’s, he always ends up like this, high and fucked up, but not like tonight. Tonight, he went beyond his limits, he was determined to get you out of his mind but all he succeeded in, was thinking of you more.
He almost felt peaceful for a bit until he felt someone straddling him and as he opened his eyes, a girl with too revealing clothes was sitting on his lap, already grinding on his crotch. He gasped at the sudden pressure on his cock and looked at her with heavy eyes “how about we go to the bathroom and you fuck me on the countertop, like this one time, remember?”, she whispered snuggling against his neck “I want those inked arms around my throat so bad”, she moaned but he couldn’t even remember who she was, let alone the fact that he was inside her in the recent past. In any other situation, he’d already be on his feet and up for some fun but now he only turned his head the other way, “I need to leave”.
“oh c’mon”, she tried to hug him but he was fast to break free from her embrace “I said I need to leave”, he moved her on the seat next to him and stood up, heading for the door.
“dude, are you leaving already?”, Wooyoung shouted from the other side of the apartment but Yunho only wore his leather jacket and moved his two fingers, gesturing goodbye to him.
Once he was home, the bed seemed more captivating than a hot shower. His legs couldn’t keep him up longer, after all. Everything was still spinning, except now he’s in the safety of his own home and random girls aren’t coming up to him asking for sex in bathrooms. He fell asleep in a matter of seconds and, maybe, these little hours he slept where the only ones you weren’t wandering around his mind, in the conscious part, at least.
-------------------------------------------
Waking up early everyday to study isn’t the easiest thing, especially when you work late every night. If you wanna keep your health you’ll have to quit that job, but for now you need the money it offers.
Lately all your days are either spent in the library or in a cafe, studying for the upcoming exams and the nights...they’re always spent in the bar, moving around filled glasses and taking them back empty. And that’s exactly what’s happening now and you still have an hour to go till you can get back to the warmth of your sweet home.
Bars are...lovely. Well, not your favourite places to be, but considering that most youths spend their time in clubs, bars are much more preferred. The music is low enough to share a good conversation with someone, but still loud enough to enjoy the melodies themselves. The decoration is much more genteel than clubs and cafes, the clients more kind and free to come in dressed in anything they find pretty or comfortable. The vibes are more chill, collected, nonchalant, if you will, and there’s a balance in everything that’s hard to find in other places.
You’ve been moving around beautifully decorated cocktails all night and if it wasn’t for the -not so high- heels you’ve been wearing, you’d be enjoying doing so. You can feel your heels and ankles starting to burn but there’s only an hour left, you can do it.
Once you were back to take the newly made drinks from the bartender, the door of the bar opened fast and a male entered. Usually, you know who enters. The bar is small and by far not one of the famous ones in the city, so the clients are pretty much the same and especially on weekends. But this one…no, you didn’t know him. He wore black jeans and a black leather jacket with a white t-shirt underneath. You noticed the brown timberland shoes, not many people around you wear those, and his features…you couldn’t identify them due to the sunglasses he was wearing and his head that hang low. This man really entered a bar which already had dim lighting, at 2AM, with sunglasses on. Your eyebrows furrowed and the bartender gestured for you to take his order once he was sat. A helmet hang from the man’s right hand and moving slowly, he found a table on the very back of the place to sit. It felt like you were in a movie, where a stranger enters a pub, and everyone stares at him until he takes a gun out and starts shooting.
You moved to his table with your mind still on how your feet hurt and spoke politely “hello, what can I get for you?”
“you”
“excuse me?”
He raised his head and your insides felt like they twisted…not in the bad way, actually exactly the opposite. Yunho stared at you, you assumed, but after he took the sunglasses off you were sure he did. But he wasn’t the same. Even with the dim lighting of the place you could see how his eyes were red, he must’ve been (crying) smoking something. It wouldn’t be beyond belief, if he did.
“I wanna talk to you”, he spoke with a deep voice and it reminded you of his voice the night of the dare.
“I’m sorry, I’m working. Now what can I get for you?”
“when’s your shift over? I’ll wait”, he spoke fast as he rested his elbows on the table, moving his upper body forward. His body language proved tension spreading in his system and his voice sounded desperate, but you couldn’t figure out why.
“what can I get for you?”
“please”
“is a whiskey fine?”
“it’s important”
“is a whiskey fine?”
“…yeah”
He stayed there, drinking and following you with his gaze. Truth is, there was nothing for you to talk about, even if you really wanted to, too. The only real interaction you had was that night and you had made it clear to him that it should be forgotten and especially not be told to anyone. Yet there he was now, wanting to talk to you and God knows how he found out you worked there.
When it striked 3AM, you headed for the ‘employees’ only’ room to change the uncomfortable outfit and the even more uncomfortable shoes. Your mind was still on Yunho though who was out there waiting for you and a million questions flooded your mind. How did he find out about the bar you’re working for? What is the important thing he wants to talk to you about? Will he follow you to your apartment? And what- “hey”, you flinched at the sudden voice and turned your head fast only to see him right in the entrance.
“you’re not allowed to be in here”, you said calmly as you tied your second shoelace.
“I need to talk to you”
“we have nothing to say, now please leave. Only employees can enter here”, you stood up, heading for your locker to take your forest green jacket as he remained silent. You wore it fast and took your backpack, ready to leave but once you turned around he was there, right behind you with his head bent forward to reach your eye level.
“fuck, you scared me”, your back hit the locker and your hand reached for your chest where your heart beat faster at the abrupt presence.
“I felt something”
“I told you to leave, I’ll call the manager”
“I’ve never felt anything before…for anyone”
“YUNHO, LEAVE”
“you still remember my name”, he smiled and let his eyes fall on your lips and you really thought he must be high on something.
An awkward silence filled the room and his words got replayed in your head “ask that one more time and I’ll make sure you never forget it again”. He had achieved it…you couldn’t forget his name ever again. You couldn’t forget anything that happened that night ever again.
You looked anywhere but at him until he grabbed your chin with his thumb and index finger and forced your head up to look in his eyes. The inked thumb played with your bottom lip, lightly pulling it down to expose your bottom teeth as his eyes remained glued on yours. You fought the urge to suck on it, but your knees weakened just at the thought. He looked good, like a god in your eyes.
“You made me like this”, he pointed at himself.
“like what?”
“look at me, I’m a wreck!”
“I did nothing!”
“I can’t get you out of my fucking head! I keep trying and trying but-!”
“Yunho, please leave”, you pressed your eyebrows together, raising them at the same time. If he continued you knew you wouldn’t be able to keep your thoughts locked inside your mind for long.
“You’re ruining me!”
He widened his eyes and his voice got higher at that, like he just realized. If only he knew he was ruining you, too…but you thought he was ruining you in a completely different way. You had succeeded in winning the dare, but not in what he had warned you about. Not one day had passed without thinking of him and you were so mad at yourself for that, yet you couldn’t stop it. And every time you’d randomly see him on campus, your mind would go back to the dare and how he held you and how he had stopped his hands from moving when he realized you weren’t comfortable and how you so wanted to know him more than that, to know the real him. You were falling for him but, of course, you wouldn’t accept it. It’s not logical, you can’t fall for someone you don’t know. However, it all felt familiar. It felt like you were, again, reading one of those -way too corny- romantic novels in which the girl fell for the bad guy. They always ended with the guy taking the one thing he wanted and the girl having a broken heart and right now…you feel like you are the protagonist in one of those novels and he…he’s only there to take that one thing he always wants (however, me as the omniscient writer, I can guarantee you he meant you were ruining him the same way he ruined you).
“fuck, I need you”, he crashed his lips on yours fast, still holding your chin and now his other hand found your waist and held on it tightly but still loosely enough for you to break free if you wanted, but you didn’t. Your eyes fluttered close and you gave in, in an instant. How could you not? All you’ve been thinking about is him, but you knew it wasn’t right. He is Yunho, he’s a player, he’s nothing like you, he’s not for you. But the sweetness of the awry is too captivating not to give in. Your lips moved against his in an open mouthed kiss, your tongues danced together and your saliva got mixed with his, until he groaned and broke the kiss in need of air. You rested your head against the locker and looked up at him, his head hang low again…
“don’t you have anything to say?”, he spoke softly and you realized it was the first time you ever heard him talk like that, without anger or sarcasm in his voice.
“what do you expect me to say?”, you were too stuck to your mindset to notice the little things “that I’m glad you can’t forget how well you fucked me or to thank you for coming back for a second round?”, it hurt to say these. But Yunho was always a player, he always slept with girls and never spoke to them again and you obviously were one of them now.
“what? No”
“then what?”
“don’t you understand?” his eyebrows furrowed as he took a step back to take all your features in “I’ve never felt anything like this before. It was all about sex to me…always! I only cared about that. I only wanted my needs to be taken care of but that night…of the dare, I felt things for you and I got so fucking scared…that wasn’t me!”, a vein on his forehead was visible “I’ve warned all the girls I’ve ever been with not to catch feelings for me because I won’t be there for them. I’m not the type to get in relationships because attachment, that shit scares me! Yet, after we…did it, it hurt me to think I was only your way to win a game, a fucking game!”
“maybe it was your turn to feel how the girls you’re playing with, really feel”
That hurt.
He stayed silent for a bit. His mind was hazy and he couldn’t lie to himself, he had thought that this was the revenge that had been waiting for him.
“I’m a fucking asshole and I deserved it and maybe…this was a lesson for me but-” his expression proved pain “I can’t stop thinking about you and I hate myself for that…”
“…because I wanted to be more than just a dare to you…”
Your heart felt like it’d fly out of your chest and your breath got caught in your throat.
“…but I know I can’t change your mind about me, goddamnit!”
His fist hit the locker next to you, before turning around to walk in the room. Your heart clenched, realizing the meaning of his words. You weren’t the only one feeling differently. His head looked towards the ceiling and the new silence that filled the place gave you the chance to think and, maybe, now you know why his eyes have been red and it’s not from smoking something.
He’s hurting…and it’s the first time he’s feeling something like this, this type of pain.
He is finding himself, the self that’s been hiding under the tough, bad guy image he’s exposing to everyone. He needed this pain to finally see inside him and find the real him.
But he was wrong about one thing. You never had a complete opinion about him, therefore there was nothing for him there to change. There was only empty space where he could build the image about him in your head, and you wanted him to do that. You wanted him to put the foundations of his real image.
“Yunho”
“I’ve never let myself get attached to anyone but I only now realized that it’s uncontrollable. All this time I wasn’t controlling who I’ll get attached to and who not, it just didn’t happen…until I met you”. He, finally, turned to face you again.
He walked close to you again “and I know this will make me sound like a loser and, maybe, I am but…I think I’m falling for you”.
Your heart skipped a couple of beats, you’re sure about that, but his eyes were the most genuine ones you’ve seen in a while “Yunho-”
He shushed you by inhaling, ready to speak again but you were fast to prevent him “no, Yunho let me talk”, his eyes seemed sad but you got a hold of his hands that hang on each side of his body, to bring his attention back on you.
“I think I’m falling for you too”
You said fast and his breath got caught in his throat. Of course he didn’t expect to hear that. Your mind was going crazy at the moment with all the things you wanted to say but decided to only speak the important ones.
“…but I don’t think it’s right. You’ve been playing with girls all your life Yunho, maybe it’s in your nature, I don’t know…”
“but I can’t lie, I can’t stop thinking about you either…”, your eyes flickered between his.
You wanted him and he wanted you, it was obvious by both parties by now. You were willing to help him discover his real self and you were especially willing to let yourself fall in love but you were too inexperienced too to bear the pain it could cause you, if it didn’t work out.
“…I felt things too you know but you don’t know, even a little, how love feels and I can’t just be your lab rat, just one more experience for you. I can’t let myself fall deep and then have my heart shattered, I can’t take it!”, your eyebrows raised sympathetically and tears threatened to wet your cheeks.
“I know how it is to feel loved and now…I think I’m ready to be the one who loves, I’m ready to learn and-”
“I’m scared, Yunho”, your eyes met the marbled floor between your bodies.
I’m scared too”
Both of you weren’t the most experienced people when it came to love and, especially, Yunho. But you wanted to try and learn and, even, fall for each other and Yunho didn’t want to give up on the first strong feelings he’s ever had. This meant something.
“but we can…”
“…discover ourselves together…just give me a chance-”, he held your hands in his. His eyes were glistening, like a million pieces of hope were in them.
“I don’t know, Yunho”
“let me make this work out and, maybe, if everything turns out well…I can call you mine”
Those tears that had been threating to fall, did wet your cheeks now as you looked at him again. No one had ever told you something like this before and you never thought you’d hear it for the first time from him. Yunho isn’t the guy everyone thought he was, he is much more than that. Maybe, he’s the meaning behind the saying: don’t judge a book by its cover. Yunho had never let his real emotions take over him and even if those emotions tried, he had his self locked up. It’s like his hidden self couldn’t take it anymore and when he met you the real him broke free from the cage Yunho, himself, had him locked up. If you connected all the dots, it made sense now. Yunho isn’t just a player, he’s an unexperienced boy who only wants to feel real attraction, instead of just the physical one. And maybe if you gave him the chance, he would.
“and I want to call you mine, too”
You’re indeed the protagonist of your own romantic novel but, no, this one won’t end like all the others.
“hell, I so wanna call you mine”, you shut your eyes tightly and exhaled…and your next words got Yunho dumbfounded.
“…let’s take it slowly…”
“…let’s start by being friends”
Yunho’s heart had never clenched so hard before. He thought he’d lose his balance right then and there and collapse like a child who had just found out that his brother had eaten the very precious sweet he’s been hiding from everyone. A soft frown found his lips as he spoke the first words that came to his dizzy mind.
“can friends do this?”
He cupped your cheeks and you felt his thumbs rub your apples, but you were the one to lean in this time. You kissed him hesitantly but he kissed back with no second thoughts. You didn’t wanna be his friend…you wanted to kiss his neck and his lips and his cheeks and all his being and, maybe, love him too. He took your arm and threw it over his shoulder and you wrapped them both around his neck. This kiss was slower than before, more passionate like there was meaning behind it. A tingling feeling was sent down your spine when you noticed none of you rushed to make it deeper. It was just enough to feel how the emotions he was experiencing were new to him and you were sure now, you’re willing to help him welcome them.
“because, if they can, I don’t think I’ll be able to call you friend for long”
“friends don’t do what I’m about to do either”, you said and let your hand slide down all the way from his neck, through his t-shirt, and to his jeans and rested it on his soft member. You didn’t know why you did that, but you knew the vibe was so different from the last time you had touched him there, more endearing, if you will. He stiffened sensibly and let his head hung low as a small moan left his lips. His hands found the hem of your t-shirt and, letting them slip underneath the fabric, he grasped your sides with the whole of his large palms.
Your lips found each other’s again in a sloppier kiss and with eyes flattered shut and heavy breaths against the other’s skin, your hand slipped under the jeans and the thin material of his boxers. You caressed him slowly, receiving a hum turned into a groan from him.
“yeah they don’t…but losers who fall for each other, do”
He said and pinched your sides making you take your hand out of his jeans. You stared at him for a while. Maybe if you both tried, you could learn together and you could fall together and you could help each other find your real selves.
Collecting his thoughts, for the first time after a long time, Yunho took your hand in his. You walked out of the ‘employees only’ room and the bar, with him guiding you like you didn’t know the place.
“Let me take my friend on a friend date for friends”
“I would accept if it wasn’t 4am…”
You wouldn’t be able to call him friend for long, either…

Here’s my contribution to @starrynightdeancas 2k follower celebration, part one! The prompt was beach, which sparked the idea of Dean and Cas retiring to a beach cottage together. I built it in the sims, and provided a list of headcanons to go along with it. Hope you enjoy!
Dean and Cas buy a broken down, overgrown old house on the coast of Maine
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They immediately set about fixing it up
They leave some of the ivy on the house because Cas thinks it’s pretty (Dean agrees)
After restoring the plumbing and electricity, they finally spend a day assembling their bed in the bedroom, surrounded by the few suitcases that hold their entire lives
The master bedroom is bigger than they thought from the pictures on the internet
So they fill it with their bed, their books, their mementos, and all the things they never thought they’d have a home for
Tumblr media
There’s a little fireplace in the bedroom. Cas and Dean sit on a sofa at the end of their bed and listen to the sounds of the fire.
They have a chess table, on Cas’ insistence. He teaches Dean how to play, and Dean proves to be quite good.
The space around the base of the stairs is converted into an office and library for Cas who gets a job at the nearby town’s community college where he teaches a class on folklore and history
(The students have an abundance of theories about who he and his partner? husband? actually are. They’ve come closer than they’d expect.)
The bookshelves easily fill themselves with books Sam finds and sends to them for safekeeping and what they took from the bunker
His desk is cluttered and always stacked with books and his laptop, as well as a few abandoned coffee mugs
A map hangs on the wall, pinned with places they want to visit and rugs are scattered across the floor
Tumblr media
Cas also takes over the porch, lining the side of the house with a row of mismatched pots for plants, a bee hive, and a gardening table and storage
(Dean gets a woodworking table just off the front steps)
Tumblr media
They convert a downstairs bedroom into a bar for Dean, which he decorates with mementos from their family all over America and a big sign converted into a light that bathes the room in warm light
There’s a Stanford flag Sam sent him from where he had gotten a job, the bar is covered in flags and stickers from other hunters that stopped by, and a pride flag Cas proudly presented him after they got home from their first pride parade. A pile of paintings Jack made at school in his art class sit on display in the corner, and behind them, the wall is covered in photos of all the hunters they could find.
The barstools are mismatched but lovingly curated, collected from yard sales and thrift stores
Dean loves spending time in there, stealing kisses from Cas and practicing making drinks in his free time off from his mechanic job
Tumblr media
The kitchen has dingy white cabinets with blue countertops that clash perfectly with the yellow paint. Cas adores it. Dean insists on repainting everything, but Cas makes him keep the colour scheme. The stove and fridge are the same blue as the countertops, which Dean chooses while Cas is at work as a surprise. Cas adores them too.
Sam buys them a fancy coffee maker when he gets a promotion. They fight over how to work it (and end up kissing against the counter)
Tumblr media
Jack paints them a five-piece painting to match the blues in the kitchen. They display it proudly and always show it off to their guests
They buy the comfiest sofas they can find, and Dean builds an end table to match. He finds an old trunk and turns it into a tv table. Jack helps them pick out a TV and video game system. He invites his friends over whenever he can and they all adore visiting.
They have a big brick fireplace that’s perfect to curl up in front of when their old injuries are acting up. They play board games on rainy days and roast s’mores with Jack.
The entryway has hooks for Cas’ trenchcoat and gardening hat, across from an old globe that Cas likes to spin around as he tells stories about the places he’s seen
They keep two old rocking chairs there, where Dean and Cas sit on the harder nights, holding hands and simply being
The downstairs bathroom, Dean and Cas agree, is the superior bathroom. With its big tub (large enough for two) and its cheerful yellow curtain, they are rather fond of spending time there together. They have a bath mat shaped like a flower.
Tumblr media
The upstairs bathroom is a bit more cramped and less colorful, but works beautifully. They keep the bathrobes Eileen bought them up there. Cas’ is the same colour as his trenchcoat.
The upstairs hallway is a perfect reading nook, from its comfy armchairs to the pile of cushions Jack likes to do his homework curled up on. Dean finds the armchair Cas chose extraordinarily ugly, but he looked so happy at the sight of it that he doesn’t say anything.
Jack’s easel is next to the bookshelf in the hallway. He loves to paint at strange times of the day and night - strange, ethereal images inspired by his life
Tumblr media
Jack’s bedroom is cheerful, full of haphazardly pinned posters of his interests and soft blankets for when he gets overwhelmed. He has a gigantic stuffed dragon he hugs and talks to, and when his friends playfully tease him, he only grins and says “sometimes you’ve got to be a kid, you know?”
He has a pink and black gaming chair and a fancy desk setup for gaming with his friends. His desk lamp has planets on it, and it sits opposite the microphone.
Tumblr media
He keeps makeup and nail polish on his dresser. No one dares tease him.
They’re happy. They’re really, truly, happy.

Tumblr media
This is a fan-created personal home of Antonio Carriedo, the Hetalia personified nation of Spain. I did look up a few reference pictures but I mostly just took a few ideas I liked from them (A courtyard, a tower, certain design features, etc etc) but it is mostly ‘winged’ and ‘as I felt like it’. I’m not Spanish and I wasn’t aiming to do a 100% authentic or accurate build here. Just for fun. I like to imagine that he loves this huge mansion that he has built up over the years and there is TONS of plants and things to do to entertain not only himself but also guests, friends, and family. Like Arthur, he has his own personal office too. I can imagine Arthur complaining about his home being too big and spacious though lol.
Remember: This is fan/headcanon created. I build for fun and am not a professional. I do not build with the intention of having it livable/non-clashing. If something clashes it will be up to you to fix it because I build for the pure aesthetic and not functionality. I own a lot of packs so if you don’t own all the ones used in this there might be issues.
After the cut here I will provide a visual walk-through via screen captures. You’re more than welcome to download it and look at it for yourself. My username on Sims4 is Shinoshallbugyou.
This project in particular was HUGE, again, I like to do huge projects and mansions. Because of its size the ‘cut’ will be huge as well, keep that in mind. I’ll do my best to walk you guys through it but if you have the game and packs the easiest way would be to just download it yourself.
I chose Oasis Springs because of its desert surroundings. The only lot bigger than this one is park lots. I was tempted to do a ‘central courtyard’ and a house essentially wrapped around it but I chose this one instead. I like to pretend that his property actually extends down several paths on the cliff and to some stables, horses, and etc down below. I like to think the road leading to his house is more long and windy but the lot simply isn’t big enough for it so I compromised. I’ll be showing an occasional night-time photo of the building here and there but for the most part I’ll stay in ‘Afternoon’ because it’s the brightest to see in.
The overall look...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now the overhead breakdown of each floor, overall...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for some shots around the outside in certain spots. I really liked the idea of a courtyard and I wanted to do that. I’m always a fan of driveways that go down to another level of the house. Please note, I am aware that the driveway would be too steep realistically but this lot is NOT big enough so I made do. While cars are not a thing in the Sims 4 (They were in 3) I still like to pretend and put them in there anyways even if the objects do not work. I wanted to try my hand at a lot more balconies and playing around with the outside of a house more as well as trying things I normally wouldn’t do like leaving a section on the roof uncovered or throwing in more gazebos (Or whatever). I especially liked the below photo of a wall that kind of comes out in increments? It looked neat!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The front door. We’ll explore the 1st floor now. I wanted a ‘rug’ that would descend down with the leveled steps/platform here. There wasn’t one like that so I created one. I often play around with things and use them in ways they wouldn’t have been normally used in the game: Such as upsizing that tiny toy horse into a ‘statue’ of a horse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up: The Living room. I can imagine that he shoved in some things to entertain people with like Foosball and more. This area has a balcony too and a lot of areas on this floor open up directly outside to have airflow. Each area kind of has its own ‘major color’ to it. This area is more ‘orange’.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Downstairs here is where I decided to put a bar, storage for drinks (He’s a mass producer of wine, after all, and he likes to drink on top of it) as well as the garage for where the cars would go, etc. I usually improvise and take other objects to look like other objects. ‘Wine caskets’ don’t exist- Those are some weird metal object in the game that is a wall decoration.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is the bottom of the tower connected to the living room. The tower is the tallest building on the map with it being four stories high. The bottom is connected to the living room and it contains a small changing/towel area (This could double up for the pool/hot tub) but mainly for the sauna I have installed in there (Because why not?). I also plugged in a bathroom with the remaining room there. Because it is such a small space it is hard to see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next room we’re going to is the opposing wing on the 1st floor, on the opposite side of the main entry room. There is a staircase that goes upstairs here but through the archways is a small reading nook. There are multiple ‘flowing corridors’ around this building, both internally and externally, that are very open for air and breezes.Often these will have a lot of seating and decor mainly on the way to other rooms. I went for more white/grey here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is the first guest bedroom. It is sandwiched between two of these flowing ‘corridors’ and it has its own personal bathroom. These spaces are big enough for people to stay in plus an additional seating area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next is that corridor on the other side that leads out onto an outside corridor as well as the courtyard. I tried often to get different decorations and objects going on in some of these rooms that would differ them from the other ones so it wouldn’t all just blend together into nothingness.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is the courtyard. I had to have some kind of courtyard in here and I really liked how this one turned out with its nooks and crannies. It leads back towards the front door, back to where we came from, or to a wrap-around corridor that is only specifically on this side of the house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next up is that wrap-around outside corridor. The first one has a wall separating it from the front of the property. What follows it is what I filled that property with. I thought it would be neat to place what would’ve been an old ruin there that has long since faded away. I thought it would be a treat for the eye. I’ve never been able to use those weird rounded structures from the romantic garden pack before so I wanted to see how they would look here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now here is the other half of the wrap-around corridor but what makes this one so different is... Even though it is plain it doesn’t have a wall barricading you and thus you can walk outside with your sim more here. This corridor leads into the solarium.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Solarium is two stories tall with the 2nd floor being hallowed out in the middle with a pathway surrounding it and a  glass dome on top in a mock greenhouse effect. I wanted to play around with arches and I’ve always loved indoor gardens and such like these so I wanted to include it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Solarium branches out towards the ‘backyard’ where there is a pool, hot tub, karaoke, a fire pit, outdoor grilling area, and more. I really wanted to include this ‘gazebo’ effect not only for the look and aesthetic of it but also for potential ‘structural support’ for the 2nd floor balcony up there. Plus it ties in the same effect on the 3rd floor corridor up on top.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I forgot to get a picture of it but if you do an aerial view of the pool (Or perhaps basement level) I did add turtle decorations to the bottom of it. Tortugaaaa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here I’m going to show off the tower a bit. Please note: You can’t make rounded walls in the Sims 4. This is my closest attempt to being able to do that. I knew I wanted a tower and I’m happy with how it turned out. As I started it though it was trouble because I simply didn’t know what to do at first. I had no idea how to fill it and at first I was trying to put the staircase INSIDE rather than out. I finally got the idea for a wrap-around staircase which is also difficult given that they only make right angles. Putting them on the outside massively helped save on space inside. That and, actually, I had difficulty in general with stairs on this map. The awkward building spaces made it difficult to place them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The overall look of the ‘backyard’ with roofs up.
Tumblr media
The overall map layout of the 2nd floor with the stairs specifically outlined. I ended up giving up on trying to build another flight of stairs on the 2nd floor leading to the 3rd and settled for putting it, too, outside on the main back balcony. Out of everything on this map that was one of the most frustrating things that I struggled with. I don’t ever do outside stairs so this was interesting for me to try.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we’re going up the tower and coming into the pantry. It’s rather nice and big, he can grow stuff in there on hand to eat, a collection of fish, spices, oils, and etc is all in there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The next up is the kitchen. This one was frustrating too but once it came together it was nice. I went out of my comfort zone here, too. I’ve never made a blue kitchen and while I loved the idea the Sims 4 pallet was NOT working with me. I even tried with yellow cabinets and it just wasn’t working. These cabinets were the best I could do which is rather unfortunate because I wanted older looking cabinets but... It’ll do. I accented it with white and it is very spacious for lots of company! This kitchen has its own balcony and small eating area out there too. While most would argue that the kitchen should go on the bottom floor I actually really liked it here specifically because of the panty, the additional balcony, and the large eating area on the back balcony too. That and the stairs into the main entryway are actually in here and near that front door so it isn’t as far as one would think.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you look in the below photo, though you can barely see it... On the left countertop against the wall there is actually a ‘tea’ area. We ship spuk/engspa and so I like to think Antonio, while he does drink tea, doesn’t as much. He does have this little cute area for Arthur to make his tea at though. He himself has his own counter under a window where he stores all his coffee stuff. Also, while I’ve never done it before, I really like hiding the stairway with that china cabinet because it just changed the whole atmosphere of the room.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Below is a rather chunky corridor that I chose a ‘black and white’ tile scheme for. It really only serves as a point A to B type of thing. The kitchen is to the right, another corridor to the left, below is a balcony that overhangs the front entryway and the doors at the top of the image lead to a massive back balcony that serves as an outside dining area that I imagine Antonio actually prefers to eat in because of the views and especially when he hosts guests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is the corridor to the left of that chunky middle section. This is a rather odd-shaped corridor that was one of the last things I put together because I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to do with it. I ended up having it being a seating area, a bathroom, a piano area, a small library area, and another seating area. It leads to another guest bedroom as well as the solarium/wrap-around-corridor on that side of the building, to continue the pattern from below. I went with a ‘yellow’ kind of theme here which is completely out of my element. Also, I realize that the lighting on the piano area looks out of place compared to the rest of it but I wanted it that way so that the piano had a spotlight feature.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright- The last ‘room’ on this floor. The second guest bedroom. This one doesn’t have its own personal bathroom (Just down the hall) but it does have its own balcony and it is bigger. I actually like this one more, I think.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alright. This is the last main wrap-around corridor. It opens up and is not separated from the 2nd floor of the solarium. I decided to differentiate this one big time by introducing colored carpets and furniture to give it a fun touch. Also it does have a ‘hookah’ area lmao. The solarium part is  alittle more boring but it does have activities for your sim to do such as painting, woodworking, and more. I figured it was a good spot to put misc hobbies since it is more out of the way of the usual social areas but has a great view and airspace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for the last section of the 2nd floor: The main back balcony. This thing is huge and has a LOT of seating. I really like that big main dining table, the record player, and decorations. There is a stairway here that I put in, cutting through the roof, to get to the 3rd floor because I could‘t figure out how else to do it. I actually picture Antonio preferring to eat out here.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is that stairwell with the 3rd floor cut off.
Tumblr media
And here it is with the 3rd floor activated. It was a pain to get that to work but once I got it it worked just fine. I couldn’t figure out how to really connect the two separate buildings but then realized I could do an open-air corridor with no roof. That was DEFINITELY new for me and interesting to do!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the roof on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we’ll go to the office. I imagine that because he often shows up late (If even at all) and so he really utilizes this personal office and library a lot. It has its own personal bathroom, small kitchen, small records area, and eve a TV and fireplace near his desk. I often picture him trying to turn his desk around on the rug so that people on camera or on his zoom call won’t see his kitchen but I often see him forgetting to do that and so they just see a big microwave behind him lmao. Also I imagine, while the TV is helpful a lot for news and etc he is often distracted by soap operas, sports, and etc on it. Get to work, Antonio!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So we’re going to go back across that open-air corridor to the other wing and that is Antonio’s personal master bedroom and master bathroom. He has his own personal balcony that is colorful and relaxing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First we’ll go into the master bathroom. I wanted a nice tub, plenty of space, more yellow accents... And I couldn’t figure out the shower and had to improvise. I actually put up stand-alone showerheads and nozzles into each of those pillars so he could take a really cool shower, if he wanted. I just didn’t want the shower to take away from the overall look of it and that seemed like the best option. Again, improvise, adapt, overcome.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now for the final room on the 3rd floor: Antonio’s master bedroom. I went with ‘green for this’. It’s really cozy and colorful. I like to pretend that Arthur stitched those designs above his door and he hung them up because he loves them. Antonio also has a large walk-in closet/wardrobe that has been fitted onto the 3rd floor of this tower. I couldn’t get any good brown furniture to work so I shifted it to black in here. He’s a really fashionable guy and loves to care for his looks so it felt natural to make this his closet and area to get ready in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
From Antonio’s wardrobe... You have to use the stairs outside leading upstairs to the last and final room at the top of the tower and the 4th floor. It’s actually an attic/storage area and I often love putting these in the homes I build. I like to make them messy, cluttered, full of memories, and personal things to the person that lives specifically here. I always have a fun time trying to cram them full of stuff.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And with these last few pictures I wanted to show some of the scenery around in the area. It was a massive build and I’m glad I finally finished it at long last! Thanks for checking it out, it was a lot of hard work and time but I love it!

Undead (3)
Tumblr media
Summary: Your world turns upside down (quite literally) when you wake up to find a mysterious man who tells you you’re undead.
Pairing: Jungkook x Reader
Word Count: 1.4k
Chapter 1, Chapter 2
Chapter 3: Truth
On the couch downstairs, you were nervously playing with your hands in your lap while getting a look at the spacious living room you were in. There was a TV that was probably at least 60 inches attached to the wall in front of the couch, showing a screen to select characters that were lightly bouncing back and forth. Between the couch and TV was a wooden coffee table where a phone and PS4 controller lay. The walls were plain alabaster with no decorations aside from the windows covered by the usual long black curtains. From your spot on the couch, you could see dust flecking the curtains, indicating that they hadn’t been opened in a while. You should have been questioning how you were able to see dust from how far away you were, but you pushed the thought aside, continuing to look around the room. There was a recliner and a loveseat on either side of the couch you were sat at. Just how many people live here anyway? Or does this guy have lots of visitors? To the left of the couch, there was a bar area that showed the kitchen beyond it. All you could tell was that it had smooth speckled marble countertops and white cabinets to match the rest of the house.
The man cleared his throat, causing you to glance over at him sitting next to you. He was really quite attractive in some way. He wore an open flannel shirt on top of a white tee, both much too big to fit properly but still suiting him well. Black sweatpants covered his long legs, which were propped up on the coffee table. His inky black hair was messy, like he’d been constantly raking through it with his hands. Red eyes looked out from behind wisps of his hair.
“I remember you wanted to know who I am earlier,” he said. “My name is Jeongguk, and I’m like you. Undead. In fact, I made you like this. It wasn’t supposed to happen that way, it still doesn’t make any sense to me. You should be dead. I found you trapped in what was left of your car. It was totally mangled, and I had a hard time getting to you.”
The memories came back in a rush. You remembered what felt like so long ago. Imagining people who lived in the houses you were watching, getting ready to go home, headlights coming at you, the car slamming into you. “You tried to save me?” you asked, a sudden thankfulness blossoming in your chest.
Jeongguk scratched the back of his neck timidly. “Well, not exactly.” He explained, “I was thirsty, you see. I try to find meals that are freshly dead, or at least about to be, like in your case. You had no chance, I could tell from one look, one sense of your heartbeat. I avoid killing humans if I can. It’s especially convenient when there’s a nasty wreck, so there’s an excuse for bodies to be almost drained of blood. No offense,” he added upon seeing what must have been a horrified look on your face. “Anyway, I found you and started feeding. But after I’d almost drained you, I felt some kind of jolt of electricity, something I’d recognized from when I became what I am. I knew something had gone wrong, so I brought you here to wait for my hyungs.”
You tried to process the information he gave you and repeated what he said back to him. “So let me get this straight…You found me after my car accident, tried to finish me off, some weird lightning happened that wasn’t supposed to, and you don’t know what to do either…” The whole thing sounded completely crazy to you, but you had to try to understand what happened to you. You hadn’t even remembered the accident until he brought it up.
“Well, no lightning, just imagine you got shocked by a defibrillator. No awesome spectacle in the sky to make it cooler, sorry.”
You bent forward and put your head in your hands, trying to wrap your mind around what he was telling you. Were you really a vampire? Did you just drink blood from a juice pouch minutes ago? Were you dead to the world? Where did your mom think you were?
You voiced your thoughts to Jeongguk, not forgetting to avoid bombarding him with too many questions. “Where does everyone think I am? Like, am I dead? Or missing?”
“Right now, you’re missing.” He pointed his chin in the direction of the TV on the wall. “I saw it on the news last week. They found your messed-up car, but Y/N was nowhere to be found. I’m assuming they’re still looking. Not sure, I’ve been playing video games.” Jeongguk shrugged, as if this were the least of his worries. What were his worries anyway? Being bored in this big house all by himself? Running out of juice boxes? Being killed by another character playing Overwatch?
“I need to see my mom,” you said, your voice starting to shake. “She’s probably worried sick. I can’t imagine how she must be feeling right now.” Your mind flashed to your mom, perhaps not getting enough sleep, not eating, not taking care of herself. If she thought you were dead…
Jeongguk sighed. “How do you plan on doing that? Showing up at her house with those red eyes, none of the flaws you used to have, inhuman beauty. Maybe even getting a whiff of her blood would set you off. You don’t know yet,” he said, earnestly looking at you. “At least wait till you’re more used to this life, then maybe you can go see her. But I really don’t think you should right now. This place is far from most civilization, but we have the occasional hiker come through once in a while. You have no idea how tempting blood can be.”
At the mention of blood, you swallowed, noticing you were very…thirsty? It wasn’t that you were hungry. There was no pain in your stomach telling you to eat. No, you didn’t want food. But your throat was dry, you felt weak, and you knew that water wouldn’t do the trick. You warily concluded that he wasn’t lying, that you were actually what he said you were. What he was. A vampire.
“Ah. Thirsty?” he asked, his teeth flashing in a wicked grin. “Maybe we can go solve that problem together now that you’re awake.”
Your stomach rolled at the thought, wondering if you would really drink someone’s blood like those fictional creatures have been said to do. Taking someone’s life, using them for your own needs just didn’t seem fair. Why does it have to be life for life? Did you have to do this to live? The idea of hurting someone for your survival made you queasy.
The feeling of a hand on your shoulder broke you out of your thoughts, and you looked up to meet Jeongguk’s eyes. They seemed to draw you in, those blood red eyes all you could focus on. Suddenly, a sense of calmness washed over you, similar to how you had felt at the dentist’s office long ago when getting your teeth pulled. It felt like an anesthesia that was numbing you to pain, bringing you to an almost catatonic state where you didn’t even remember what you were thinking about. It was like you were floating, floating in water, your body feeling light. You smiled.
The man’s hand traveled down your arm and wrapped itself around your hand, holding it gently. “How are you feeling right now? Not worried, are you?” he asked, a hint of concern in his voice.
“No,” you answered. “Why would I feel worried?”
Jeongguk returned a soft smile to you, his eyes creasing at the corners. With that smile, he looked so innocent, like he was an ordinary human. “Good. Let’s stay like that, and we’ll get you some food,” he said.
He stood from the couch and pulled you with him, your body moving sluggishly. Even though it felt like you had limited control of your body, your mind was relaxed, unlike moments ago. Your gaze traveled from his legs, up his torso, finally resting on his face. He watched you with an amused expression and started walking backwards, tugging on your hand. Together, you made your way to the front door.
“Ready to get a little snack?” he asked, his hand on the doorknob. You nodded, and he twisted the doorknob, the door swinging out.

Just the Two of Us, Pt. 5
I’d never felt we had a super traditional marriage. We eloped to the Oregon coast, a road trip that we didn’t come home from for nearly a month. I wore a different white dress every day until we’d gotten married, and on that day I still didn’t wear an actual wedding dress—just a simple white sundress that I still wore from time to time. We both worked full time—although your career was much more involved than mine. We’d both decided having kids just wasn’t for us. We didn’t go to Church on Sundays and a good portion of our home decor were nerdy trinkets we’d collected on the way. But, I did do most of the cooking and you did usually end up behind the wheel if we were going anywhere. You took the traditional role as the more dominant one in our relationship—both in general and in bed— which wasn’t a small feat considering that I generally had a very dominant personality. “You’re a fucking brat and I love that about you,” you’d always say.
But, nevertheless, the comment your new friend made when he saw me in my ruffled Pioneer Woman apron still made me feel... domesticated. “What a pretty little house wife,” he’d said. His wife had smiled politely, nodding in agreement.
I stared down at the lemon curd I was working with and tried to hide my look of disgust. You didn’t say anything about the comment, but you didn’t even try to mask your own disapproval. Jonas, the man in question, dropped it with an awkward laugh.
This was only our second attempt at having a couple to be friends with. The wife—Laura—had spotted my day collar while we were out at our favorite little hole-in-the-wall bar playing darts and compared it to her own.
“Oooh, another couple in the lifestyle I see!” She’d chided.
People didn’t often recognize that the necklace I now kept around my neck had any meaning beyond looking elegant, so you’d looked at me and shrugged, and I grinned at her. “I see you know your stuff.”
She’d brushed her hair away from her neck to show us hers, although it was significantly more flashy. A thick silver band to make up the choker and a thick ring—it was slightly more obvious and not made to be elegant, but a day time show piece. “Of course!”
She and her husband had joined us for a few drinks and another round of darts. Our conversation flowed so smoothly that we even opted for a game of pool. I, for the record, can’t play pool to save my life, so you spent your time behind me, hands guiding my arms to teach me how to shoot. I’d get so distracted from conversing with our new friends, feeling your girth through your pants pressed against my ass. You’d sneak a hand down to pinch mine after every good shot I’d made. We had a really good night that night.
Now, though, being in the privacy of our home, it seemed we’d be seeing their true colors. We’d both been worried about it just before we asked them over for dinner.
“I dunno, B,” you’d groaned. “You know how couples that say they ‘live the lifestyle’ can be. The guy’s usually a douche, the woman is more of a thing to him than a person.”
I’d nodded. “I know, I know. If we don’t like them we can forget they ever existed though.”
You were right, to be fair. The dom/sub relationship that WE had was just a part of our life, something we’d discovered we both enjoyed that made existence feel relevant again since we’d given up on believing in some grand meaning. Sure, I had multiple night time collars and the beautiful, simple day collar you’d surprised me with in England, but we still had the rest of our relationship as well. We both played our roles well, but it didn’t consume the entirety of our lives together.
Others, though, if they “lived the lifestyle,” they really LIVED the LIFESTYLE. At least the ones we’d met. The doms, the men, were usually incredibly demanding, and the women just gave into it. The other couple we’d tried befriending after finding out had invited us over and the wife had been in a full on French maid outfit... just for us to be there. He called her all sorts of filthy names. I gave you one look and you snuck away to text your buddy to call and say a pipe had busted at our house so we could bail. We never spoke to that couple again.
I looked up from my mixer just long in time to catch the look you were giving me. I told ya so.
I looked back down to my curd, now turning a lovely milky yellow after the cream was added. Lemon silk pie was one of your absolute favorites, and I’d been excited to make it for you all week.
Jonas made polite conversation with you for several minutes, about similar interests and work. I’d let out a quiet sigh of relief, hoping maybe he’d just started off on the wrong foot.
My stomach sank, though, when I heard him clear his throat. “So, uh, you ever thought about letting your buddies use your wife? Or we could even just switch wives for a night?”
I knew you so well that I could’ve swore I heard you grit your teeth, even over the sound of my mixer. “Absolutely fucking not.”
I didn’t dare turn away from the counter. You weren’t an angry guy; you kept your cool relatively well in the majority of situations. This wasn’t going to be one of them.
“Okay okay, I get it. What’s yours is yours, I just figured—“
You cut him off right there. You didn’t yell, but I knew how you sounded when you were livid. “Number one, share my wife? Are you fucking kidding me? I don’t OWN her, it’s not my place to say ‘hey my buddy wants to fuck you tonight so you’re gonna do it.’ That’s not how this works. Number fucking two, switch wives? Hell no. Women aren’t fucking Pokémon cards, you don’t trade them when you want a good time.” I heard you scoot in your chair; you tended to stand up when you got heated.
“Relax, man, it was just a suggestion. You know, some fun. Laura likes to join couples for three ways sometimes, or we could do a couple thing too so you’d still be in the room.”
“Yeah!” Laura piped up. “Jonas has a gorgeous cock, I’m sure you’d love watching him fuck your pretty wife and she’d like it too.”
Now I ground my teeth. This is what i hated about trying to befriend other couples who may be into similar things that we are. I was never B, I was always just your wife, as if you owned me—just another toy, and that couldn’t be further from the truth.
“The two of you should probably go.” I knew you were frustrated. You’d always been adamant on keeping our personal lives between the two of us, regardless of if we happened to meet someone that recognized the subtle signs—like my necklace, or you leading me by the wrist instead of my hand.
“On c’mon,” Laura purred. “You know you could have a lot of fun with me, too.”
I spun around at this, ready to finally put in my two cents, but you’d already taken a large step back and headed to the door. You opened it wide, motioning with your arm. “Out.”
I hated that things had gone poorly; we both thought it may be interesting to have friends in our life that we could be open with to some extent, but this seemed to be common place with most couples. At the same time, though, seeing you completely shut down ideas that a lot of men wouldn’t be opposed to sent a tingling down between my legs. I turned back to my pie and went back to debating if I wanted to do meringue or whipped cream for the topping. You’d handled everything flawlessly.
You walked into the kitchen and settled your chin on my shoulder. “We don’t actually NEED to be friends with a couple, right? We’ve been fine for this long.”
I nodded and turned toward you, and you settled your hands on my waist. I touched the tip of my nose to yours affectionately. “I’m content with just you.”
You grinned and let your lips drift down to my neck. “I’d hope so.” You nibbled at my skin, and I let out a soft moan. “Besides, now I don’t have to be unwillingly patient.”
I grinned and spun around, purposely bending over just a bit to let my ass press up against your hardening cock. I took my pie off the counter. “It still needs a topping... meringue or whipped cream.”
“Canned or fresh?”
“The squirty kind. I used all the cream I had for your pie.”
“Mm...” you settled your chin back onto my shoulder and slid a hand under my apron and between my legs, rubbing me through my jeans. “Meringue. You can finish it later, though.”
I bit my lip and place a hand on his forearm, it moving up and down as he rubbed me. “But it’s your favorite. You don’t want me to finish it now?”
You worked your way up and unbuttoned my jeans, pulling at them to force the zipper down. Your hand found its way to my panties and you rubbed me through those, kissing the back of my neck now. “It’ll still be my favorite tomorrow, kitten. I’m hungry for something else right now.”
I pulled away from you unwillingly to put the pie back into the fridge. You grabbed the can of whipped cream from the door and set it on the counter before it could swing shut, and then grabbed me by the wrist and pulled me to you to lock me into a kiss. You pushed me back against our kitchen island, which was clear except for a cookbook and two bottles of wine. Using your forearm, you pushed them to the side to clear space for me to hop up onto the countertop.
You untied the string of my apron and pulled the loop from around my neck, letting it fall to the floor with a soft thud. You kissed down my neck and wrapped your fingers under the bottom of my shirt to pull it off over my head, leaving it in a puddle with the apron.
I slid my fingers up into your hair as your lips found my nipples, relishing the feeling of your tongue making a big circle around each one. You pulled my jeans off and let those fall to the floor too, leaving me only in my little cotton boy shorts.
You kissed back up to my lips, making me lean back just enough to make it easier for you to have a hand wrapped around my throat and another in between my legs.
Your kisses were generally so soft and sweet, not too terribly wet, just enough to keep me wanting more. The way you kissed me while teasing me endlessly was the same way you’d kiss me if we’d been cuddled up in bed.
You stepped back and pulled my panties down over my thighs, let them fall with the rest of my clothes, and spread my legs wide, standing in between them with your crotch pressed into mine. You cupped one of my cheeks in your hand, running your thumb across it gingerly. “You know, that pie you make me is actually my second favorite dessert.”
I pressed my face into your hand and batted my eyelashes at you. You were so incredibly handsome; dark hair, dark eyes, thick eyelashes. A sharp jaw and always just a bit of stubble. You had tattoos up and down your arms, just like I did, and you had the most dazzling smile I’d ever seen in my life. “Oh?” I murmured, trying not to get too caught up in admiring you.
“Mhmm.” You stepped back to the counter and grabbed the can of whipped cream. “You’ve always been the first, Princess.” I leaned back for you, propping myself up on my forearms to give you absolute access to everywhere you’d need to be.
You took the can and covered both of my tits in whipped cream, spread my legs a bit wider and covered my freshly shaved pussy in it as well.
You set the can down and immediately started licking my newly found, edible bikini off of my body. Your tongue felt so good against my tits and nipples. I let my head lean back and just enjoyed the sensation, letting out soft moans every so often.
The thing that no one would ever guess about you, from the outside looking in, was that you were incredibly attentive to my feelings and emotions—honestly, that was one of the biggest reasons our dynamic worked. So, when something like this happened, you exclusively focused on me and my pleasure during our play time—you hated the thought of anyone possibly making me feel like I wasn’t as valuable as I was. Idiots like Jonas rarely ever did, but you always felt the need to correct it anyway.
You kissed down my body slowly, a hand now on each of my thighs, pushing them just a bit wider with every kiss. Once you’d made it down to my pussy, you started licking everywhere but the most sensitive spots, taking your time to clean up the sweet mess. Once the majority of it was gone, you ran your hands up my inner thighs and spread the lips of my pussy. I bit my lip and glanced down at you, and you smirked up at me before running your tongue from between the lips to my clit.
I laid back against the counter, running my hands up to my tits as you started to work my pussy with the width of your tongue. I slid my hands back down my stomach and into your hair, curling my fingers into it.
I don’t know how long you swirled your tongue over my clit and lapped at the entirety of my pussy, but the cum that came gushing out of me attested to how good you were. You licked my pussy just a bit longer, enough to get my legs shaking.
I was panting when you kissed back up my body. You kissed up my neck to my ear and whispered, “One more time. You ready for that baby?”
I nodded and locked my lips to yours, having sat up so that it was easier. I loved the way I tasted on your lips. I think it was because... somehow, someone as perfect as you had taken the time worship my pussy. You did it often—any other time you would’ve been far more strict about letting me cum. But I always loved tasting myself on your lips.
I pulled your t-shirt over your head, and at the same time, you dropped your pants and boxers below your waist. You pressed the head of your dick up against my pussy. “Beg for me, kitten,” you whispered against my lips, not bothering with pausing out kisses.
“Please fuck me, Daddy. Please.”
"I dunno...” Your voice was playful, a subtle grin across your lips. You pushed my legs a bit further open, taking a second to just barely push the head of your dick into me--just enough that it was the worst kind of teasing, the kind that left me helplessly begging. “I may like hearing you beg.”
“Please?” I whined, shimmying my hips to try to get you further into me.
“Please what?”
“Please fuck me, Daddy. Please? I’ll do anything you want.”
“Anything, huh? Like what, Princess?”
“I’ll--” You’d starting running the head of your cock up and down my pussy, in between the lips, and it was making it hard to speak. “Mm, I’ll--I’ll blow you for--” You dipped the head of your cock back into me before going back to teasing me. “I’ll blow you for as long as you, mm, baby, for as long as you want. Down on my knees--” You ran your hand up my stomach to play with one of my tits, leaving the head of your cock in me for the moment. “--looking up at you just the way you like. I promise.”
You ran your hand up to my face to run your thumb along my cheek affectionately. “That’s my good girl,” you purred, ever so slowly pushing your dick into me--inch by inch, letting me cling to your hand as you stretched me. You kept pushing into me all the way up until my moans had gotten high pitched and my grip on your hand couldn’t have been any tighter. “Awh, baby, is that all you can take?”
I nodded, biting down on my lip, and wasn’t surprised when you gave your hips a hard thrust and pushed just that much further into me. “Mm--Daddy--”
“‘Daddy’ nothing, baby.” You slipped two fingers into my mouth to keep me from protesting any further, the look on your face making it evident that you liked the way my tongue felt against them.
You lowered your hands to take both of my wrists, pinning them against my stomach while your other hand pushed my leg to the side.
The way your cock filled me was one of the greatest pleasures I had in life--I felt myself stretch every single time you pushed into me, my pussy filled as much as it possibly could be. It didn’t matter how wet I was or how easy it was for you to push in; it never failed to make me gasp.
You pushed in and out of me for a few minutes, tightening your grip on my wrists every time I started to squirm. “Now, Princess,” you’d lean down and whisper. “You know to take it like a good girl.”
I nodded, fighting the urge to buckle my hips. You were pushing in and out of me deep and slow, looking up to occasionally make eye contact with me, but you were mostly focused on my pussy lips wrapped around your cock. Every single time you pushed back into me, your dick would hit the back of my pussy, encouraging high pitched moans. That, as much as it could hurt, felt incredible at the same time. The way your warm, thick cock felt with every slow inch... I wanted to wait to cum. A second orgasm this soon would’ve been too exhausting.
You pulled out of me suddenly, leaving me pouting and longing for more, but that didn’t last long. You took hold up my legs behind my knees and jerked me forward, planting your hands on the counter with your forearms behind my knees now, forcing my legs up and open. “Was that a whine I heard?”
“Yes, Daddy...”
“You know better.” You didn’t give it to me slowly this time. As soon as you had the head in, you slammed into me, leaving me to bite down on my lip to keep from damn near screaming.
“Ah--Baby--” I ran my hands up over my face and into my hair, tits bouncing with every hard thrust into me. I couldn’t help it this time--my back arched, just making it easier for your cock to get further into me, and I slid my hands back down to my chest to cup my tits.
“Uh uh,” you said sharply. “Move your hands.”
“Yes, Daddy...” I opted to instead kind of prop myself on my elbows to be able to look you in the eyes and, to my delight, you slowed just enough to lean in and kiss me.
“How’s that feel?”
“Mm.” I cherished the feeling of your lips on mine while you were fucking me, your face so close to mine that I could really see that hungry look in your eyes. “It feels so good, Daddy.”
“Oh yeah? And just why is that, Princess?”
You were guiding your dick in and out of me slowly, and I was struggling to keep myself from cumming. I don’t know exactly what it was--maybe the position, maybe just the way my pussy stretched slowly instead of quickly. “It just feels so good when your cock stretches me out like this, baby,” I managed. “I love it when you use me this way.”
“That’s my girl.” You pulled me down off of the counter and spun me around, pushing me up against it so that I had to use my hands to keep myself steady. You wasted no time pushing back into me, wrapping my hair around your hand to pull my head back while you pumped in and out of me. You kissed the top of my ear gently and whispered, “You need this, don’t you?”
“Ah--y-yes Daddy. I always need this.” You used your free hand and ran it down my stomach, your fingers finding my clit, making it substantially harder to keep myself in check. “Daddy,” I whimpered. “I’m gonna cum if you don’t stop--”
“So cum, baby.” You let go of my hair to get a hold on my throat, tightening your grip as I finally gave in and let my pussy clench around your cock. I used one hand to keep my head steady and the other to dig my nails into your forearm, moaning out your name as I gushed, my own cum covering your balls and your cock and dripping down my legs. “Did that feel good, Princess?”
I nodded and you let go of my throat while I collapsed down on the counter, arms folded to rest my head on as I panted and enjoyed the feeling of you finishing yourself of with a few hard, deep thrusts, your cum soon joining my own dribbling down my legs.
We took a second to catch our breath before I turned to face you, satisfied. You finished rebuttoning your jeans and kissed my temple. “Love you.”
“I love you.” I bent down and picked up your t-shirt, pulling it on over my head before scooping up the rest of my clothes to stick into the hamper. “So... no threesomes?”
You chuckled and took my chin between your fingers, giving me a peck on the lips. “Not a chance, baby. Afraid you’re mine.”
I stole another kiss from you and laughed myself.
Yours.
 I could live with that.
You grabbed both of the bottles of wine from the counter and headed for the living room. “C’mon Princess, that lame anime on Netflix is calling our names.”
I tossed my clothes into the hamper in our laundry room and followed you into the living room for what I was sure would be a low key night of cartoons and possibly a wine fueled round two.
Perfect.

Locked out, Part 3
Read Part I and Part 2
“I’ve never been thanked with pie before,” Jack said, reaching to take the containers out of Eric’s arms before he stepped back to allow Eric to enter his condo.
“You never knew me before,” Eric said, following Jack through the entry and past a large living room area to the kitchen.
Jack set the pies down on a wide granite (yes, definitely granite) countertop that had very little on it. The countertop stretched between a deep sink and KitchenAid range, with a stainless steel Frigidaire side-by-side model on the adjacent wall. A granite-topped island divided the kitchen from the living room, with stools on the living room side turning it into breakfast bar.
“So, um, I found some video of your team,” Jack said, turning away from the still-covered pies.
“You did?” Eric said, stepping further into the kitchen. Maybe Jack expected him to do the honors, since he made the pies? “Umm, which pie do you want? There’s apple and peach. Either will be better if I heat it in the oven. Microwaving it ruins the texture of the crust.”
“Oh, you want pie now?” Jack said. “I don’t usually eat this time of day, but I guess I could … apple, I think.”
“I could cut you small slices of both,” Eric said, stepping to the oven. Given the state of the kitchen, he wasn’t entirely sure Jack knew how to turn it on. Which wasn’t fair; Jack probably baked fish or boneless, skinless (flavorless) chicken breasts from time to time. Wait -- this was a gas range with an electric oven. Jack definitely did not appreciate this.
“Once the oven preheats, it’ll be about 10 minutes,” Eric said. “I’d suggest adding ice cream, but …”
“I don’t have any,” Jack said. “I don’t usually eat dessert. Do you really have to heat up the pie?”
“It’s not absolutely necessary,” Eric said. “But if you don’t eat pie often, then when you do, it should be the best it can be, right?”
Jack nodded his agreement with that sentiment.
“It really does taste better warm,” Eric said, carefully cutting small slices, about half of what he would normally serve, from each pie. “Do you have a ceramic plate, something that can go in the oven for a bit? And a pie server? Or a spatula?”
Jack reached into a cupboard where there were white stoneware plates. “There might be something in that drawer,” he told Eric, pointing.
Eric found a yellow triangular server, something that probably came with a pizza delivery or maybe a cake. Jack had set two plates on the counter.
“We can probably put both on one plate,” Eric said. “The slices are small.”
“Aren’t you going to have some, too?” Jack asked.
“I made the pies for you,” Eric said. “But I’ll join you, if you like.”
“There’s no way I can eat this much by myself,” Jack said, and Eric’s heart broke a little. Surely Jack had friends he could share the pies with? Eric rarely got more than a slice -- if that -- of any pie he made and allowed his Haus-mates to eat.
“That’s why I was asking about heating them,” Jack continued. “There’s a table at the team facility where people leave food to share.”
So apparently NHL team facilities weren’t that different from other workplaces.
“Every office I’ve worked in has something like that,” Eric said, cutting two more half-sized slices and plating them. “Or you can freeze them to eat later, or serve when you have people over.”
“A lot of guys already left for the summer,” Jack said.
“You stay here?” Eric asked.
“For most of the summer,” Jack said. “I keep my sponsorships and stuff based here -- it’s close to Boston and not too far from New York -- and I do a lot of charity stuff. I do try to visit my folks for a couple of weeks, but I can get back in between.”
“Where do they live?”
“Montreal, mostly, but they have a cabin in Nova Scotia, too,” Jack said.
“Sounds nice,” Eric said.
“It is,” Jack said. “You said you might be working in Providence this summer? Do you usually go back to Georgia?”
The oven beeped that it was ready, so Eric slid the plates in. “Those will be hot when they come out,” he said.
Jack pulled a potholder from a drawer behind him.
“Anyway, yes, if I get this internship, it will be the first time I haven’t gone home for the summer,” Eric said. “My mother’s not real happy with the idea, to be honest.”
“How do you feel about it?” Jack asked. “Do you think you’ll be homesick?”
Eric shrugged.
“Maybe a little?” he said. “I’ll miss Mama, of course, and MooMaw, and even Coach, but I just don’t … fit in in Madison.”
“You’ll miss your old hockey coach?” Jack asked.
Eric laughed.
“While my hockey coach was great, no,” Eric said. “Coach is my dad. He’s the local high school football coach, and everyone calls him that. I wasn’t all that close to my hockey coaches, not like my figure skating coach when I was a kid. Katya was a force to be reckoned with. But I always called her Katya.”
“That explains some things,” Jack said.
“Like what?” Eric said.
“LIke how you played rec league hockey and still made an NCAA division I team,” Jack said. “And how you skate fast enough for that to make sense. I said I watched some of your games, and you don’t look like someone who was new to high-level athletics or the commitment it takes. Your checking game could use some improvement, though.”
“No kidding,” Eric deadpanned. “Do you want me to make coffee or something?”
“I only have caffeine in the morning,” Jack said. “But I have a single-cup drip filter if you want some. I was going to have milk.”
“Milk is good,” Eric said.
Jack got out two glasses and a carton of low-fat milk.
“So I’m guessing you were a pretty good figure skater?”
“I was the 2010 Southern Regional Junior champion,” Eric said.
“Why’d you switch?”
The oven beeped again, and Eric picked up the potholder and turned to get the pie out.
“The short version is we moved and we were too far from my coach to make it realistic to practice every day,” Eric said. “I really couldn’t improve -- or even maintain my level -- without that.”
“But if you were that good, couldn’t you have moved away from your parents to get the coaching you needed?” Jack said. “I left home at 16 for hockey. Or did you not want to?”
Eric put the two plates on the island and said, “That would be the long version.”
“I’ve got time,” Jack said. “If you want to tell me.”
Eric looked around at Jack’s condo, he wasn’t sure for what. A sign, maybe. He was pretty sure it would be safe to say he was gay. NHL players didn’t go around beating up random gay college boys they met through automotive misfortunes. But he liked Jack, and Jack seemed to be taking an interest in him, and he didn’t want to cut what seemed like an incipient friendship with a lonely hockey player short by outing himself.
The condo didn’t give him any indication about how Jack would react, It was tastefully decorated in grays and blues, with large black-and-white artsy photos of hockey rinks and memorabilia from Jack’s six years as a Falconer. Yes, Eric had Googled him last night, just to have an idea what he was getting into going to his condo. Yes, he knew there was an overdose when Jack was 18, knew that the hockey world thought the Falcs were taking a chance when they drafted Jack the next year. That taking that gamble had paid off for the Falconers in perennial playoff appearances and one Stanley Cup and absolutely no scandals involving Jack Zimmermann, whose personal life attracted almost no attention.
Well, how much of a friendship could it be if he couldn’t be out? That was why he didn’t want to go back to Georgia, after all.
“We moved, officially, because Coach got a new job,” Eric said. “And that was true. He did get a new job, at a bigger school. But he’d been looking for a new job for two years, because I was having trouble with kids in school who thought I was gay, at least in part because of the figure skating. And I didn’t want to go through that with a whole new group of kids in a new school.
“I could have moved away, like you said, and lived with my coach, but if I stayed with the same coach, I would have been with the same kids who locked me in a storage closet overnight in seventh grade -- without my parents there to support me. And, to be honest, I couldn’t have gone much further with Katya, I don’t think. She was great, but she didn’t have the facilities, the other people I would need to be Olympic-level.”
Jack nodded. He understood how much would go into making that happen.
“And the investment my parents would need to make for me to even have a chance, to get into the pipeline … No one is guaranteed success, and I’d be coming in late, with all the politics. I just decided it was enough.
“So we moved and I started a baking vlog and joined a hockey league. And I turned out to be pretty good at hockey -- except the checking part -- and I found a college where they would work with me on that and help me get better, and where it was okay that I’m gay.”
Eric couldn’t look at Jack immediately after saying that, so he picked up a fork and took a bite of the apple pie. Jack, who hadn’t eaten while Eric was speaking, did the same.
“Holy shit, this is good,” Jack said.

Title: July 4th (Reader x Peter Parker)
Summary: Peter plans a picnic in the park date for the Fourth of July, surely crime could take a break for Independence Day.
Word Count: 1798
A/N: LONG TIME NO WRITE LOL! I hope you guys enjoy, i’ve missed just taking the time to write. Even though this isn’t as detail oriented, I had so much fun writing it and hope you love!
--
Summer had been going great so far. It was just as laid back and fun as you had hoped it would be. Full of sleeping in, trips to the pool, movie dates with Peter, catching up on reading all of your favorite books. Being a kid in the summertime was the best.
“What are we doing today?” you stuck your feet up onto your headboard, hanging upside down from your bed as you talked to Peter on the phone. Your parents weren’t home a lot in the summer, just over the weekend usually. Both of them were either working or busy with their own social lives.
Peter took a long moment to think before he responded. You could practically hear the wheels turning in his brain, “Well, it is the Fourth of July. I was thinking that, I don’t know, maybe I could make a picnic and we could meet at the park to catch the fireworks tonight?”
“That sounds romantic,” you giggled over the phone. You could almost feel the blush heating up Peter’s cheeks, “I forgot that was today! Sounds like fun to me. Great idea, Peter.”
You couldn’t help but giggle, rolling off of the bed. You stuck your phone to your shoulder so that you could search for Fourth of July dessert recipes online as you talked to the boy. “I have those occasionally,” he said with a sort of laugh, “I’ll let you go now. Meet me at the park at six thirty?”
“I’ll be there,” you said, biting back a smile. Though you’d been talking for a while, Peter still made you all giddy and nervous. Your heart began to beat faster as the two of you said your goodbyes through nervous laughter. You sat in front of your laptop for a moment, positively radiant from the idea that you would be having a picnic date with Peter Parker.
“What are you doing for the holiday today?” Natasha strutted into the room and leaned on the kitchen countertop, chin resting in her hand. Her eyes scanned your face briefly, raising an eyebrow as your face burned in a blush. It turned the tips of your ears pink, making your whole face hot.
You were simultaneously whipping cream in the stand mixer and chopping strawberries as you shrugged, “Not much. A picnic in the park,” you chided, rinsing blueberries off in a colander.
“Oh yeah? With who?” you avoided her harsh gaze, Natasha gasping loudly. She gripped onto the marble countertop, she’s widening to the size of golf balls. “It’s Peter! It’s Peter, isn’t it? This is wonderful news, I mean we all saw it coming. I’m so excited for you!”
Your face turned beet red once more, a smile trying to creep into your face. You wanted to sink low beneath the cabinets and disappear from her excited gaze, “It’s not a big deal, really. We’re just watching the fireworks,” you tried to shrug it off but you could hear your heart pounding in your ears.
Natasha helped you spread the sweetened whipped cream you had made onto the white box cake that was cooling in its glass container, decorating with strawberry halves and blueberries to look like the American flag, “What are you going to wear?” she asked, tossing a blueberry into the air to catch in her mouth. Success.
“I have no idea,” you gulped, the impending anxiety of the situation settling in on you. Natasha smiled and wrapped an arm around your shoulders, a silent way of saying, ‘I’ve got you’.  Your shoulders relaxed as you pressed the final strawberry into the dessert, stepping back to admire your handiwork.
Natasha was everything but patient with you when it came to clothing. She wanted you to try every style under the sun, but you would much rather wear jeans and a tee every day of your life, “At least wear a blouse every once in a while!” She snapped at you, holding a flouncy white top up to your frame. You rolled your eyes and crossed your arms defiantly.
“Can you at least help me decide on something I’m comfortable in? This isn’t a fancy date or anything, Nat. I’ll probably be eaten alive by mosquitos, after all,” you had finally gotten your point across to Natasha.
She could finally see that you were actually nervous, changing up your everyday style on the same night you would be alone with Peter probably wasn’t the best idea, “You’re right, fine,” she finally gave in and, with a sigh, tossed you her choice of shoe before leaving you to choose your own clothing.
“You look great!” Natasha gushed, batting her heart eyes at you. You scoffed at her, your face heating up, “What time do you have to meet him? It’s six o’clock.”
Your eyes widened, hands beginning to sweat and heart beginning to race. The time for your picnic date was fast approaching, “I’ve gotta go,” you said.
The park was already filling up with people and the sun wasn’t even beginning it’s descent yet. You miraculously found a spot in the clearing of the field in the crowded park so you threw your picnic blanket down to claim your spot. You still had fifteen minutes before Peter would arrive, fifteen agonizingly long moments of waiting impatiently. You watched the people around you as you waited, searching hopelessly for Peter in the crowd. Everyone was dressed in either red, white, or blue, which made it difficult for you to distinguish one person from the next. It was like an anxious game of Where’s Waldo.
It was six thirty. You saw a boy your age with short, curly brown locks bouncing as he walked, catching your eye. Your heart was beginning to thump loudly in your chest, for it had to be Peter. You clambered to your feet and smoothed out the nonexistent wrinkles of your striped tee. A smile made its way to your face as you waved Peter over, your stomach dropping to your feet as you finally saw the boy’s face. It wasn’t Peter, only a tall boy with wavy hair and a sympathetic smile as he nodded your way and turned to join his group of friends. You were mortified, you had no idea who you had just waved at but it wasn’t Peter. As you sank back down to the blanket, you checked your phone for the time. Only five minutes had gone by so there was no doubt that he was on his way, even if he hadn’t texted yet.
The sun was lowering behind the trees, turning the sky pink and purple shades of the perfect summer sunset. Everyone around you was excited for the impending fireworks, talking and laughing loudly with their friends and family, everyone except for you.
You were laying on your back looking up at the sky, your stomach filled with the angry swarm of anxious butterflies. A rock formed in your throat and tears pricked your eyes, two hours later and there was no sign of Peter or his whereabouts. You felt sick, hurt, embarrassed. You couldn’t keep the thoughts from swarming around in your head as you packed up your things; were you just stood up?
“Hey! I’m just checking in on you two, how’s it going? When do the fireworks start?” Natasha’s bright voice made the tears spill over, but you tried to stay quiet. You held the cell phone away from your ear as you sniffled, “Y/N what’s wrong? Is it Peter. Where are you, do I need to pick you up?”
You tucked your dessert under your arm, “I don’t want to talk about it. I’m fine, I’ll be home soon,” you quickly said your goodbyes, trying to get off of the phone so you could sulk in silence.
“Y/N, up here!” you stopped dead in your tracks, wiping your eyes quickly. It was Peter’s voice, but you couldn’t see him anywhere. He couldn’t know that you were crying over him not three minutes ago, “I’m on the fire escape.”
A quick glance up made you feel sick to your stomach. Peter was in his Spider-Man suit, one hand on his hip and one waving frantically at you. You felt so bad that you were ever angry at him, “What on earth are you doing?” you climbed the rusting staircase to the landing that Peter was standing on.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I was with Ned and then I heard a car alarm and basically watched someone steal a car and I couldn’t just let that go. Then it was already almost eight and I hadn’t even packed a picnic for us yet and then I heard you talking to someone on the phone and crying and then I felt really bad that I missed our date,” Peter sighed loudly, taking his mask off. He sat against the stairs facing the park, his feet dangling over the edge.
“You heard all of that?” your eyes widened as you sat next to him, face burning red from embarrassment. Peter laughed and nudged you with his elbow, “Wait, did you just say ‘date’?”
Peter shrugged, tossing his backpack onto the ground. He unzipped the main compartment and dumped out the contents, candy bars and chips and fizzy sodas, “I mean, yes. Do you, uh, want a candy bar? I also forgot to pack a picnic. Great first date, huh? I bail and then I only bring candy bars?” his own heart was beating loudly in his chest as he gulped, “I’m really sorry, about everything Y/N.”
You smiled over at him, reaching for your favorite chocolate bar. A comfortable silence surrounded the two of you as you sat side by side, watching the people hurry to their spots for the firework show that would begin any minute. Peter looked over at you nervously, his face pink. You glanced over, butterflies fluttering in your stomach. “What are you staring at?” you teased. He merely shrugged, still looking at you with the same airy smile on his face. You’d never wanted to kiss him more.
The two of you looked up at the sky, a bright blue firework exploding in front of you. Your face lit up in a smile, “It’s starting!” you said breathlessly. The butterflies in your stomach diminished as you watched the sky with a wide grin, leaning your head on  Peter’s shoulder as the two of you sat and watched.
Peter sighed a shaky sigh, his heart beating out of his chest. You looked up at him and smiled briefly before returning your attention to fireworks raining down. Peter’s face lit up with a wide, giddy, schoolboy grin. He couldn’t have asked for a better person to spend the patriotic holiday with.

Maybe Baby (I’ll See You on New Year’s Day) (Ch 1/8)
Author’s Note: For @onceuponanadvent. Recently-divorced and returning home for the holidays, Regina Mills is ready to sink into the comforts of the familiar small town she grew up in. While she's there, she finds herself drawn to an old friend.
Regina Mills doesn’t always enjoy being home for Christmas, but she does enjoy going home.
She enjoys the way the December light bounces off of the snow-coated pines, the way their trunks stand out starkly in the woods that cradle the road as she drives north. She even enjoys the sight of the ocean, choppy and grey and unwelcoming as it is.
It’s familiar. Like an old, worn blanket – not necessarily nice to look at all of the time, but comforting nonetheless.
And this year… This year, she’s aching for familiar.
This year, it’s well after dark as she crosses the town line, “Christmas, Baby Please Come Home” blaring from her car stereo in an attempt to keep her awake and alert on the darkened back roads. The moon filtering down through the thick woods makes the snow-covered ground glow blue, and Regina feels a sort of settled rightness in her middle at the feeling of being home .
Home isn’t a feeling she’s been able to indulge in lately, and imperfect though this home may be, it’s better than the one she’d left to come here.
It’s quiet downtown, the chilly streets mostly buttoned up for the night, shop windows all festooned with bells and pine branches and SEASON’S GREETINGS!, fake snow climbing up from their corners and wrapped boxes arranged behind the darkened glass.
There are a few lights still on – the Rabbit Hole has music pumping out into the street, as usual, and Granny’s is still open for late dinners and boasting vacancies.
For a half-second, she’s tempted to pull off right there on Main Street and book herself a room. It might be more welcoming than her destination, and certainly less complicated – but it would no doubt feed the small town gossip mill and Mother would never let her live it down, so she keeps driving.
Just before Main Street ends, curving into Hatter and then Mifflin, she passes Storybrooke Camp and Sport (now boasting signs for ski rentals and ice fishing augers) and her heart skips a beat, her fingers tightening a little on the wheel.
Her wedding ring feels heavy on her left hand, a weighty lie that glitters for a second in the streetlights and makes her heart twist and sink.
She tears her gaze from what maybe should have been but never was, forces her mind from what was and maybe never should have been, and takes the turn carefully, mindful of the ice that slips ever so slightly under one of her tires.
It’s nearly midnight when she pulls into the drive of 108 Mifflin, but the lights are still on in the looming white mansion, an ornate wreath decorating the front door as usual. That and the potted mini-pines lining the walk are the closest thing Mother has come to decorating for the holidays – no surprise there; she finds fairy lights garish and pedestrian, wouldn’t be caught dead with window clings or light-up reindeer, or glowing plastic Santas.
Regina kills the motor in her Mercedes and shrugs her jacket on haphazardly, stepping out into a bitterly cold night. She liberates her Louis Vuitton travel bag from the passenger seat and shivers as she makes a quick trek between those little pines, one hand holding her coat closed as the other lifts to knock at the front door.
Cora answers in a neat pant-suit, her face still painted, not a hair out of place despite the late hour.
Regina is suddenly painfully aware of the splotch of coffee she’d spilled on her jeans somewhere near Kennebunk, and the distinct possibility that said coffee and the granola bar she’d scarfed down an hour ago had worn away her lipstick.
“Come in, dear, you’re letting in the chill,” Mother beckons, and Regina crosses the threshold, dutifully shutting out the winter night.
The outside of the Mayor’s mansion may be sparingly decorated, but the inside is another story. The grand staircase is wound with boughs of holly and pine all the way up, and there’s a large, glowing tree in the sitting room. The whole place smells vaguely of spice—no doubt from the trio of fat candles burning on the sitting room coffee table—and Regina knows that she can count on an ornate Nativity on the dining room credenza despite Mother’s ambivalence toward religion in general, along with another small tree in Mother’s home office. There will be company towels in the guest bath, company soaps, too, all season-appropriate.
The combined effect is supposed to make the place feel welcoming, but Regina remembers too many Christmases from her younger years spent being told not to muss the holly, not to encourage more needles to fall from the trees, not to play with the baby Jesus and the little drummer boy.
Even now, in her early forties, the display carries a forbidden air. A feeling of look-but-don’t-touch.
It feels like a showroom more than a home, especially now that Daddy is gone.
And yet, she’s glad to be here. Would rather be here than in D.C., in that too-empty loft, not enough furniture yet to fill it. She’d decorated it a few weeks ago – silly, considering she’s spending the holiday here and not there . But she hadn’t been able to bear the empty countertops, the bare corners, the… new-ness of it all.
It shouldn’t feel lonely, not to her. The divorce was her choice, and she tells herself night after night that she asked for this. For a place of her own, for an end to the exercise in boredom and endurance and strained silence that her marriage had become. She’d asked to be free, and she was.
She should be happy.
She’s not happy.
Not even with her fragrant six-foot fir with its silver and gold ornaments, or the bowls of snow-crusted pine cones on the coffee table, the drape of silver bell garland over the mantle, or the sleek, white reindeer figurines perched behind it.
She should have gone with red and gold, she thinks, not silver. The silver just feels cold…
Speaking of cold, Mother tells her frostily, “Midnight is a bit late to arrive, don’t you think, sweetheart?”
“I told you I would be getting in late,” Regina reminds as she slips her coat from her shoulders again and unzips her boots. “I worked this morning, and it’s a nine hour drive.”
She shouldn’t have mentioned the drive. All it accomplishes is making her mother huff, “I still don’t see why you drove up from McLean instead of just flying. You could have chartered a car from Portland, and been here in time for dinner.”
“I suppose I could have, Mother,” Regina sighs, “But I wanted to drive. It gives me time to think.”
“What on earth could you have to think about that takes nine hours?” Cora asks as they finally leave the foyer, and, oh, if only she knew.
Far too much is what Regina has to fill nine hours of thinking.
Still, it had been good – the long drive to herself, just Regina and her music, and then a conference call while she’d been snarled in some traffic around Philly, and a good chunk of a book on tape as she’d made her way past New York. There’d been a quick call with her lawyers to recap the divorce agreement she and Leo had signed, and when all the assets would be divided officially.
You know, business as usual for the beginnings of a Christmas holiday.
But Regina hasn’t yet told her mother about the divorce – the ring weighing heavily on her finger is a testament to that – and she’s not sure if she intends to break it to her at the beginning of this trip or the end. She can’t imagine the news will be well-received.
So she holds onto it a little longer, dismissing, “There’s always something to think about,” as they head (unsurprisingly) for the den.
It’s where Mother keeps her bar, and there will no doubt be a post-drive nightcap before Regina gets a chance to shower and sleep.
“I see Leo’s not with you,” Cora comments, predictably, as she reaches for a decanter of brandy.
Regina lies, and tells her, “He had work to do; he couldn’t get away. But he sends his regards.”
Cora nods slowly, pouring drinks both for herself and for Regina and bringing them over to the sofa Regina has settled dutifully onto. Only then does Mother say to her, “I’m sure he’s getting lots of work done in St. Barts.”
Regina freezes, her hand poised to grab the lowball but not quite grasping it yet.
So much for keeping her divorce a secret.
She feels very much like she had at seventeen, when she got caught necking with Daniel out at Lookout Point, despite Mother’s repeated insistence she wasn’t to waste her time with a boy so terribly common .
Busted. And small. And very much like she’s failed to keep Mother’s favor.
It doesn’t help that Cora is looking down at her expectantly, but also with that hint of triumph behind her eyes. Like she’s beaten Regina at her own game, and Regina supposes that, in a way, she has.
“I don’t know why you felt the need to lie to me, dear,” she says to her, and Regina finally grabs that brandy and takes a deep swallow as Mother sinks into the cushion beside her. “I’m your mother; and you’re hardly the only person I know in your social circle, I was bound to find out.”
It would be true, if their divorce had been at all public. But it hadn’t been, it had been quiet, a low-key, mostly amicable parting of ways. Hell, most of their friends don’t even know yet. They’d agreed not to break the news until after the New Year. Which means Mother must have gotten it from one of the lawyers.
Regina is sure—absolutely sure —it was Gold, that snake.
She should have known this would happen. Mother and Gold have known each other for decades, she just figured that attorney-client privilege might actually save her this once.
“I was planning on breaking the news this week – although preferably not the minute I stepped in the door,” Regina tells her mother, trying not to fiddle with her glass despite the twisting nerves in her belly. “I wanted to tell you and Zelena in person, not over the phone. And as well-connected as you may be, the divorce hasn’t been big news. We’ve kept it between us, for now. I thought it was a secret that would keep until the holiday.”
She sees Mother’s mouth pinch slightly at the mention of her other daughter, but she doesn’t acknowledge the comment with more than a, “Well. What happened, then? You seemed like such a good match.”
They didn’t. They never had been.
Leo had been a mistake, a square peg she’d spent a decade of her life trying to fit into a round hole. He’d been good on paper – successful, driven, a mover and shaker in the D.C. political arena. And he’d afforded her the life Mother had always hoped she’d have. But the socialite life had never been Regina’s dream, and she’d always felt stifled in it.
“I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life attending boring galas, on the arm of a boring man, and then going home and having, quite-frankly, mind-numbingly boring sex—”
“Regina,” Mother chides, as if she’s somehow been scandalized by the idea of her daughter having sex with her husband. Or maybe it’s just the honesty that has her so rattled.
“You asked, Mother,” Regina reminds, taking another small sip of her drink. “I wasn’t happy with Leo; I hadn’t been happy in a long time. I’m not sure I ever was. I think…” She shouldn’t say this, absolutely should not, but she hasn’t had much to eat since well before dinner time, not much more than that granola bar, so the little bit of brandy she’s had is already starting to go to her head. It makes her bold enough to admit, “I married him more for you than me. He made sense, he was a ‘smart choice,’ but he was never really my choice. That life had never been the life I wanted. I thought it could be, but…”
She shakes her head, takes another sip and says, “I couldn’t bear the thought of spending ten more years just… surviving, and not really living . Much less another thirty, or forty. So I left him.”
“You gave up,” Cora says primly, and Regina’s blood boils.
“I did not ‘give up,’” she defends, fingers tightening around her glass. “Unless you’re talking about the years I gave up trying to make a doomed marriage work.”
Cora lets out a little huff and takes a swallow of her own brandy, but thankfully doesn’t argue. Regina can tell from the sour expression on her face just what Mother thinks of Regina’s excuses, though – and that’s what she’d no doubt call them, “excuses”, if she wasn’t showing a blessed amount of restraint.
Thank goodness for Christmas miracles.
Of course, Cora not answering leaves dead air between them, a heavy silence that Regina feels the need to fill.
“He didn’t even fight me on it, Mother,” she informs wearily, a headache starting to brew behind her eyes (she should have gone with water, not liquor). “We both knew it wasn’t right anymore.”
“Well, I suppose you’re happy, then,” Cora says with a tight little smile, and Regina scoffs a laugh.
How her mother manages to pack so much disappointment into so little expression Regina will never know, and, “No, I’m not happy. I’m… sad. Or…”
Regina takes a deep breath. These sorts of talks have never been easy with Mother; the more Regina tries to be honest about how she feels, the more judged she usually ends up feeling.
But she tries anyway, telling her, “I feel like a failure. And a fool. And I feel… old. And lonely. And… adrift.” Cora narrows her eyes as Regina talks, but she’s listening, so Regina keeps going. “I may not have been happy with Leo, but I knew what to expect. My life was boring, but comfortable. And now… I suppose I’m just not used to being alone anymore, or to having nothing on my calendar but my own social engagements. It’s… an adjustment.”
“You chose this,” Cora reminds, as if Regina doesn’t know that. “But I’m sure if you wanted to change your mind—”
“I don’t,” Regina insists, shaking her head. “I don’t want to go back to what I had. I just have to figure out what’s next, that’s all. But right now, all I want is a hot shower, and a warm bed.”
And to not be talking about this with her mother.
“So do you think we could continue this in the morning?” Regina suggests, “Or later this week?”
“I think you should spend this week thinking about whether a divorce is really a good cure for boredom ,” Cora tells her, and Regina's jaw clenches. As if she didn’t spend plenty of time thinking this through before she finally threw in the towel. But then Mother concedes, giving her an out with, “But it’s late, and we have a whole week to discuss your options, so yes, we can continue this in the morning.”
Regina is too relieved to even protest the promise of more meddling.
Instead, she takes her bag and climbs the stairs, settling in to the guest room that was once her childhood bedroom.
She unpacks her toiletries and her pajamas, and then she stares at the rings on her left hand, the thick emerald-cut rock and the diamond band. She’d kept them on to keep up appearances with Mother, but the jig is up now
So Regina slips them off, unzipping her cosmetic bag and dropping them inside, never to be worn again.
It feels good. Right.
A bit heavy, but somehow… hopeful.
When she steps under the spray of the shower, it feels like she’s washing away more than the nine hours she’s spent behind the wheel.

In the spirit of the holiday, let's delve into FAHC headcanons! How big a to-do is Christmas Morning? Who takes the most joy in it all? Who always tries to find their gifts early? Who has their gifts bought months in advance, and who ends up swinging by the gas station on the way home Christmas Eve for theirs? Who gets the most presents? What are their favorites presents they've each gotten? Their least favorite? What kind of wrappings do they each use? How do they spread the holiday cheer?
So, this is a bit late, but it’s not even New Years yet so I think I’m doing pretty good! I’m just throwing this under a read more because there’s quite a bit to these questions here, Jack. And it kind of just ended up as a fic. Enjoy an FAHC Christmas!
Geoff was the first one up Christmas morning, as he was every year. The sun hadn’t quite yet risen, the penthouse was quiet, and he could only hope that Ryan had gone to bed and wasn’t still sitting up reading in the living room. Geoff yawned and stood in the middle of his bedroom for a moment, contemplating getting dressed, before waving a hand dismissively and going out to the kitchen. No one would care if he was in his pajamas for a while. It was Christmas, he was allowed to not wear normal clothes.
The kitchen was surprisingly clean, especially compared to when he’d left it last night and it looked like dinner had exploded to cover every dish and countertop. Everything had since been wiped down and washed and put away, and though Geoff wasn’t entirely sure who had done it, he suspected it had been Jack when he found everything for coffee set out neatly in front of the pot. He smiled to himself, making a note to thank them when they got up, and started the coffee brewing so the others could grab some if they wanted.
To Geoff’s relief, the living room was empty, the tiny lights of the Christmas tree making the walls shine with splashes of color. The tree itself was towering, reaching up to the vaulted ceiling, and completely covered with ornaments. Traditional Hallmark ornaments and precious keepsakes were hung alongside bullet casings and expensive jewelry and knick-knacks that had been stolen at one time or another. The dildo Gavin had put at the top of the tree was still there - no one had cared enough to find a ladder and remove it.
A line of hooks sat on the wall, all of them empty except for one that held a large stocking with Geoff’s name embroidered on the top. He would’ve been lying if he’d said he wasn’t tempted to peek, but Geoff left it alone and went to gather the others. He didn’t need to be like Jeremy, seeking out gifts or not so subtly needling someone for hints about what they’d gotten. No, Geoff could wait. It wouldn’t be long before one of the lads was up and going anyway.
He kept the stockings in his gun cabinet just before Christmas, each one packed with candy and small gifts. Geoff had found some candy coal and thrown it on the top of every one, so that they and the candy canes hanging from the tops of the stockings were all that could be seen. Geoff gathered them up and hung them from their hooks, and after that it was a waiting game. A game that didn’t run for very long.
Jeremy was the next one up, and far less quiet about it than Geoff had been. As excited as a kid on, well, Christmas, Jeremy bounded from room to room making sure everyone was awake and getting up so the day could start. As soon as Gavin was awake, he joined in the loud, eager excitement readily. Everyone gathered in the living room, usually after a quick stop for coffee, and it fell on Geoff and Jack to keep the lads from snatching up boxes from the rather expansive pile that spilled out from beneath the tree.
Ryan was the last to wander into the living room, looking like a zombie and nursing a cup of coffee, but he offered a faint smile as he sat down. The first things to be opened were stockings, candy and collectibles going everywhere as people dug through them. Candy wrappers ended up lost within piles of actual candy, small toys ended up airborne (such as the little rubber snake that had found its way into Geoff’s stocking and he threw away from him with a shout), and the living room was full of happy chatter and banter.
Jack took charge of sorting out presents. They claimed elf status, wearing the striped Christmas hat with the attached elf ears that had been killed and revived multiple times over the years, and that put them in the position of present distributor. It wasn’t too difficult to tell what presents were from who, even before reading the labels. Gavin’s presents were hastily and shoddily wrapped, corners of the paper tearing or large sections of it bunched up beneath a layer of tape. Michael was the asshole who incorporated ducktape somewhere, from a strip of it right down the seam of the paper, to the present he gave Gavin that was covered in layers of the stuff and needed a knife to open.
Jeremy’s presents were wrapped in the brightest, most garish colors that had others complaining about how bright it was or how horrid, in as loud of voices as possible. Jack wrapped theirs neatly and carefully, and usually included a wide variety of bows and ribbons that sometimes made it difficult to get to the box beneath. The biggest difference between Jack and Ryan wrapping a present was Ryan’s lack of bows or other decorations, and while Jack used paper with fancy swirls and designs, Ryan had surprised them all the first year by pulling out paper covered in cartoon characters. Geoff always took the easy out and just used gift bags full of tissue paper, which filled the front of the present mountain.
It was difficult to tell, since the lads always dug into their presents as soon as they were passed over, but Geoff always felt like they ended up with less than he and Jack did. He wasn’t exactly sure, but it seemed like the rest of the crew ended up getting more for the two gents than anyone else. It made Geoff feel pretty good, if he was being honest.
Gavin’s presents were always the most wild. Sometimes, he gave gifts that were nice and well thought out and he’d clearly put some effort behind. Other times, it was an obviously last minute gift from the dollar store. Though to his credit, Michael got a kick out of the blue, plastic handcuffs and silver painted sheriff’s badge that Gavin gave him. Ryan’s were on a ridiculous scale themselves, but in a different way. One present you opened from him might be a new weapon or a book on some strange or morbid subject, while the next could be a small plant or handmade scarf.
Every year, there were clearly favorite presents. Ryan was rather fond of a venus fly trap that was in a pot shaped like a skull, with bones carved around the base. Jeremy ended up with a tie-dye hat, so when he decided to grow and color his hair again, he wouldn’t have to worry about staining his white hat. Michael got a replica of the Master Sword, while Gavin was most excited about the pistol that had been custom made and painted with a Union Jack. Jack loved a pair of ducky earrings that they opened, and Geoff ended up a little teary eyed at the framed photo of the six of them, taken by Lindsay as they relaxed and laughed at a bar.
After presents were opened and clean-up had finished, the rest of the day for the crew was rather relaxed. Ryan made them breakfast, going all out and being sure to make everyone’s favorites, while Jack helped him tackle dinner later that night. Christmas was the one day that everyone agreed should be crime-free, no one wanted to ruin someone else’s holiday even if it would be great fun to go tearing down the road in a new car or test out a shiny new weapon. It was actually a day where they instead gave a bit of their riches away, donating to charities they liked, either anonymously or as the Fakes if someone was being cocky.
Christmas day wound down earlier than most days, and despite being the first up, Geoff was usually one of the last to go to bed. He stayed up for a while, a mug of hot chocolate in hand, just looking at the tree and the gifts that ended up strewn around the penthouse. He loved seeing his crew so happy, running around like children, enjoying a day off with the family they’d created. It warmed Geoff’s heart to know that they were healthy and happy and they’d made it through another great year, and next year he could look forward to the same.
When he laid down, it was looking at the photo he’d gotten and set up on his nightstand, and for once he went to sleep content and stress-free.
