this post is so swag bUT 'writers likely intended for Lord Hater and Lord Dominator to end up in a relationship' is such slanderous libel against the woy crew adn I cannot be silent about that
my wander wisdom..... original here !!! notes under the cut
some of these have NUANCE to them. I do think wander and sylvia love each other very much but I don't think their relationship is romantical... the star nomad species name thing would be so cool but considering its the name of their ship from season 3? unlikely.... the queer headcanons are somewhat unserious BUT I do believe that they (possibly unintentionally) queercoded wander to an extreme degree. he is always kissing the male watchdogs and has never shown any romantic interest in any girl characters. as well as the fact that the show creators chose sylvia for the date episode instead of wander because wander would happily go on a date with hater. ABSURD!!!!! the OCD one is probably more of a coincidence but the way he acts??? my god. diagnosis for wander petition. if he doesn't help every single person that might need it something TERRIBLE will happen.. no guys I promise its normal to hyperventilate on the floor of a gas station shop because you can't get your friend a specific drink to help her quench her thirst. hes fine wander is FINE.. don't worry about him !!!!!! ALSO. no hate to wander and sylvia shippers you guys have fun and enjoy ^_^ it's just not my thing!!! I really enjoy their dynamic as best friends and I think there should be more strong platonic relationships in media it's important to me
#/NM BTW#it's forever seared into my mind how often they were accused of that during S2's original run..#and how much the crew had to hold back from going ''HELL no what'' until That story arc was wrapped HGGFNSBF#the crush arc was SO not without its flaws but craig & co have never done wrong by lord dominator wrt what she is and isnt about#which im 4ever gonna be a huge admirer of bc i really feel like most other shows would not have gone 'NOPE NO LOVE INTEREST EVER' w/ her#meanwhile craig on twitter (bc when he and his story assert his character as something He Means It❣️): 'she doesnt want romance ever kthnx'#he's just so cool and so real for that in a way i feel like we need to invent a new word for asbsIdvcnbsbs#(im a huge nerd for how they wrote s2 and all the little details and planning that went into it im sorry)#anyway i loved reading the thoughts under the read more... i love seeing ppl comb thru this show and what they took away frm it#and what they think the thought processes behind every intentionally done and not-so-intentionally done aspect of the show were aaaAaAA#ok im done now

Hi, Matteo! So, I have just about the stupidest question to you as a fellow transmasc artist/creator: whenever I find myself trying to create a female character, I end up struggling with forming the idea of her personality and motivations etc in my mind, and then when I try to sort look at the character from different angles to 'get' them, boom! My hand slips and they're genderfluid now, or nonbinary, or transmasc, or transfem. The point is, they're never a cis woman in the end. No issues with male characters, cis or trans. Is this a common experience for other trans/nb creators? Or is it a 'default misogyny instilled in us all by society' thing? I just want to be able to create female characters too! and I kinda feel like an asshole for not being able to. So, I'd love to hear your thoughts on that!
this isn't stupid at all! first of all, it's entirely fine if you only want to draw and create trans characters. It's also okay that you have preferences toward certain characters. I hilariously fall into this same problem of struggling to make female characters, because my attraction toward men makes me want to always create gay/MLM centered stories. My brain is giving very much "no women no girls this is...The World of the Gays" image. But here's the thing, what you draw and what you choose to invest your creative energy into doesn't say anything moral about you. I would say things start becoming more complicated depending on the intentions behind art, how characters are depicted, and the harm it may cause to others (example, racist depictions of characters, colorism within art, etc).
However, it sounds like you do want to make female characters, specifically cis female characters. I struggle making cis female characters too, and i don't know if you relate, but after many years of being forced to be a Girl and to be Feminine, I now avoid situations or things that make me feel like I'm going back to GirlMode. But, it's important to remind ourselves that this avoidance can become maladaptive and prevent us from opening ourselves to new experiences. You're not an asshole, and clearly you care enough about making diverse art because you're trying to seek different perspectives.
my thought process when making female characters is essentially the same with all characters, but there are many characters I have intentionally chosen aspects of themselves that i do not relate to to push myself. It sounds like you need to make a decision to keep a cis female character and protect her from your transgender mind beam haha. Give her something you relate to, like a hobby or a lived experience or an outfit you like, and perhaps it can help alleviate any feelings of wanting to push your connection to her through shared transness. Another thing you can do is base her loosely off a cis woman in your life! I've done this before and it prevents me from changing her gender, mostly because I feel like it would be disrespectful to make them trans if they're based off someone I know haha. Or, if you still want a trans character in proximity to her, give her a trans friend, sister, cousin, partner, or enemy! That way the dynamic is not just based on their relationship, but also their different genders :)
also, don't worry if you're being misogynistic or not. every character you make may have some form of a stereotype or some "problematic" aspect. I have a cis female character who falls into the "wants to get married and only things about men stereotype", but she is brave and often far more driven than the men and women in her life because she cares about the man she loves (enough to break from her social status and become a fighter to save him). I ALSO have all kinds of trans characters I created just to lewd them up, and I know for sure there's probably someone out there wagging their finger at me and saying i'm "fetishizing" trans people. I also like to draw the occassional cute girl because I think women are beautiful and I admire the ways I see the women in my life carry themselves. My point is, characters are flawed because WE are flawed and we internalize a lot of messaging from the world. as long as you are seeking our ways to re-learn messaging and incorporate that into your work, you're doing enough. There exists no perfect squeaky clean un-problematic non-stereotypy character ever, because we all aren't squeaky clean un-problematic non-stereotypy people.
hope that helped ^-^
#muertoresponds#also all of the female characters i make r usually lesbians but the one i mentioned is a cis het white woman#so you knoooow i was struggling with her#because i am afraid of cis white women haha#but anyway#i wish u luck! its okay to draw within ur preferences#no one bats an eye at the gay men only drawing bears#or the lesbians only drawing butch women#hope that ramble helped

hi boss! absolutely loved Perfect Love and you did such an amazing job with the entire game's execution! i loved how you were able to so clearly portray eris as f-ked up and the main instigator for everything, pulling the strings behind the scenes instead of the usual "i didnt do anything wrong" or "im just trying to survive" type of MC (which isnt bad at all, but im so happy with the freshness and utter depravity eris brings) i love your art and the intentionally messy style that highlights the disorganisation and chaos in both eris' and milo's mind, the recurring motifs of eyes, red, blue, god i can go on and on. really your vn is so well crafted with how intentional every creative decision taken seems, im going crazy with the amount of love, time and effort you put into perfect love.
ive read every single name easter egg you put and the references to other yandere vns/media (jd <3) AND went on to give us more with adding little quips later in the game depending on the nickname eris gives milo. i was literally going crazy with how i couldnt decode the 2nd type of cipher you scattered throughout the code until 2 days later when i was ready to give up and ask you hahaha
from there, if it isnt too spoilerish, is there reason you used the nihilist cipher that removed the letter J instead of the usual Z ? and ! i loved the snippets with the friendship gang, tysm for leaving in your writing process and brainstorming products in the game files i had so much fun <3 im so sorry for the rant and thank you so much for the game! 1000% looking forward to your next one if youre working on something!
Hello! Thank you for your kind words!
Yeah, one of the main reasons I made Eris like that because because of how much I really wanted to see more evil MC in visual novels (or just yandere media in general). While there isn't anything wrong with having a yandere who is just there to survive, there is something very fun about being the one who causes the yandere to become worse than he initially was.
I'm glad that you found such meaning in the art style! Honestly the biggest reason I drew it like that was because I was trying to get it done for the 2023 yanjam and I didn't want to overwhelm myself so I just made mostly everything black and white. That and it's supposed to symbolize more of the darker aspects of the game. Did you know all my assets were drawn with one brush?
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy the details because I really did try to put as much as I could in there. Since I think it would be fun for people to see the neat details people put in the game (I know I sure do when I play visual novels), I tried to make everything very catered to what was going on in the story. It did take some extra work, but I think it's good for the game and my general learning experience. I'm also glad you enjoyed the easter eggs I put in for names and nicknames. I was very sleep deprived when I did it and I kept adding them in because I don't have good attention span (or at least, that's part of the reason).
For the cyphers inside of the code, I put a hint at the very top relating to each of the code. Each of the four types is represented of the three Milos with the one in English being from Eris. The Nhilist cypher is specifically for Manipulation and the key is in the second line based off of the capitalized letters.
Yeah! I'm glad you liked it. I'm still in the middle of writing the other ones (I'm working on the one with Poison in it, which recounts what Eris did to get Poison to fight Violent in his route). I always like leaving my drafts in there because I always find it fun to see people's thought progress in code and games.
No, no, I love your rant on it! I think it's really fun seeing what other people like, dislike and thought about the game in general! My next game will be a lot more light hearted, but still have a yandere character in it.

Higurashi: Massacre Chapter 10
At first, Ooishi seemed to be playing his usual role in every tragedy. He's coming into the scene and sowing doubt in the Rule X target, but Keiichi refuses to yield and Ooishi's tone instantly changes to a much more supportive one.
It's kind of wild how the memories from the other timelines are bleeding into everyone here. Keiichi realized he's never actually seen Teppei before in this timeline, and everything he's doing is actually due to his memories from Curse Killing. Rena meanwhile talks about her memories from Atonement as if they were events from her past rather than the events from a different Rena. Similar stuff has likely been happening with Shion, but she's not willing to talk about them.
One of the truly evil aspects of the Three Rules is how Rule X is developed through no malicious intents at all. Takano is a troll trying to get a rise out of people while Ooishi is just trying to figure out if there is something deeper to his friend's murder. But their actions drive the Rule X victim into a state where they commit murder.
If Keiichi didn't have the resolve to keep going despite Ooishi's well-intentioned warning, he or Shion would have fallen back on murdering Teppei after what happens the next day.
Intentionally or not, Ooishi's warning to Keiichi also came with a hint to how he could potentially resolve this issue much faster. The Child Consultation Center was afraid Oryou was secretly behind Keiichi's organization and they approached her about it.
Her involvement and opinions in either direction have a direct impact on things and at the moment, she's influencing the village to not help Satoko because of what happened during the Dam War. But if she should change her mind, then the Center can be forced to give into Keiichi's appeal.
So now it is Thursday June 16th. Just like in Curse Killing, Satoko has returned to school for the first time. But unlike last time, there is no pretending everything is fine nor any in-fighting when Satoko is away.
Everyone is fully aware Satoko is being abused at home and they need her to reach out and ask for help. But she refuses.
One other difference from Curse-Killing is Satoko goes into her panic on the same day rather than Friday.
The tragedies in each arc is tailored to the faults that each of Rika's friends has (Except Mion. Mion has done nothing wrong ever). Keiichi distrusted his friends, Rena didn't think she could ask her friends for help, Shion lost all hope, and Satoko thinks she has to endure her suffering to atone. Satoko is the only one who hasn't overcome her faults.
I bet Keiichi would also think that guy is really handsome and smart too.
Principle Kaieda pressed the Hinamizawa Syndrome power button.
We've heard a few things about Hinamizawa Syndrome but Rika's explanation gives us a good idea about what it actually does. When a person with Hinamizawa Syndrome has a fear reaction to an unknown, they initially assume it's whatever they're afraid of and they become unable to process when they were mistaken.
We can look at Keiichi in Abducted by Demons for a good example of this. When he started falling under Hinamizawa Syndrome he began interpreting every surprising moment as a sign of danger. In chapter 1, he asked Rena if she knew anything about the Dam murder and Rena said she doesn't know. Keiichi didn't expect that answer and his fears started to take over at that point.
Then every instance Mion or Rena were aware of something he thought they shouldn't be, the syndrome would make them appear to have demonic eyes and threatening tones of voice. And this culminated in him interpreting hot sauce in ohagi was actually a needle and a marker was a syringe. He could only realize the truth in a different world where he was not infected with Hinamizawa Syndrome.

Spoiler Discussion
This Devil Script is desperate to play out at this point. Initially, Shion was the Rule X target, but Keiichi has successfully saved her from that fate. So now the script is trying to make Keiichi the Rule X target. If Keiichi gives up, he or Shion or both of them will kill Teppei.
Satoko having her freakout a day early is another aspect of the script getting desperate. Normally, Satoko would have her freakout on Friday which convinces Keiichi to murder Teppei. Keiichi would spend Saturday preparing the murder and would Kill Teppei on Sunday.
However in this timeline, Satoko will be saved on Saturday. The script is throwing everything it can into derailing things because Satoko's friends refuse to give into despair.

On Adrienne Rich’s Theory on Lesbian Existence and GLOW
Just finished re-watching GLOW and got my heart broken all over again. (I’m sick and tired of Netflix cancelling my favorite shows--GLOW & Anne with an E.)
I’ve grown to love this show all the more upon re-watch. Since completing it, the dynamic between Ruth and Debbie has been on my mind a lot lately.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more compelling pair of characters in any form of media before. It’s so fascinating watching each and every one of their interactions play out.
This show functions off the complexity of women’s identities, the relationships between women, and the overall female experience.
The interactions between Ruth and Debbie are so captivating, so enthralling, so rich. There will never be a male counterpart for any of these characters that will ever leave Ruth or Debbie feeling as fulfilled or understood as each other.
Mark, Tex, and all of Debbie’s flings in between... Russell and Sam... None of these men have come close to replicating what an astounding, powerful relationship these two women have with each other. So much so, both the girls know it.
“Oh, my God! I just hate all of them.” “You hate the Japanese?” “Men. I, uh, hate men. Mark, Bash... Even when I'm fucking the cute young ones, I just... I like to take my hand and just, pfft, crunch their face into the pillow, just hard. Because they are just so... free. They make the choices. They dictate the terms, and I just hate asking them for anything.” (S3 | E6)
Yet these two still find themselves desperately trying to find a man to fill the void as per compulsory heterosexuality. Searching for a fulfilling, lifelong companion and always coming out disappointed, oblivious to what’s right in front of them.
“I thought I wanted a job. And a boyfriend. Now I have a job till the end of the year and a boyfriend, and somehow I still feel lost.” (S3 | E6)
“I don’t understand you!”
“Yes you do, probably better than anyone.” (S3 | E10)
Betty Gilpin really just hits the nail on the head.
“I think Ruth was the only person who really saw Debbie for exactly who she was . . . ‘I can achieve these things, but I can’t do it without this person who I love - who is the love of my life,’ the great love of Debbie’s life.”
What is love if not such a companionship? Being truly seen and understood by your partner?
Despite every point of conflict, every struggle, they overcome and find each other time after time. Their perseverance causes them to learn more about each other and themselves in the process. Every hardship they endure further strengthens their bond and their mutual understanding and respect for one other.
It would’ve been so easy for Debbie to cut things off with Ruth after she slept with Mark. For Ruth to give up on working to make amends with Debbie after having her leg broken. Narratively, they must continue to make persevere, the show tells you that.
“If you win, there’s no chase. No chase means no story.” (S2 | E6)
But to quote author Charlotte Eriksson,
“Some people make you want to be a better person, and that, for me, is the purest form of love.”
None of this is to devalue the power of female friendship, but to instead demonstrate how much further the solace and solidary with one another can take these two women in both life and love.
“I'm going to build us an Eden. Where we run the show. You and me. No more auditions, no more being at the mercy of these fucking idiots. We’ll call the shots.” (S3 | E10)
While I have my criticisms of Adrienne Rich’s “Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence,” I do believe there’s a lot of truth behind how the differences in socialization for men and women can impact the fulfillment women feel in opposite sex relationships.
I feel GLOW’s existence (either intentionally or not) has done a lot to serve as a case study of certain aspects Rich’s theory, which is just kind of neat :)
#i just broke my fibula#netflix glow#ruthdebbie#ruth x debbie#debbie x ruth#ruth wilder#debbie eagan

Day 10: Frottage ft. Brynjolf
Relationship: Unspecified
Species: Unspecified
Warnings: Alcohol consumption, Sexual Daydreams
Summary: Yet another cause for celebration has attracted quite the crowd to the Flagon, and whilst they’d rather be in each others company in private, a little party isn’t going to stop the Guildmaster from causing some mischief with their second in command.
The Flagon was alive, truly alive. The alcoves were filled to the brim with trading merchandise, tables had been added to compensate for the sudden influx of patrons. Vekel’s bar had never been so busy, nor had his stocks been filled with such fine goods. The guild in every aspect had its soul back. Not a single member could’ve asked for more.
That was until the Guildmaster returned not a month later, a leather backpack stashing some of the rarest treasure few had laid their eyes upon.
With assistance from Vex, the legendary Crown of Barenziah had been reformed to its mythical glory, and now took pride of place amongst the guilds other keepsakes, right behind the Guildmaster’s desk.
What had once been a gloomy area due to Mercer's consistently foul mood, was now a reminder of what could be achieved. All thanks to the efforts of Brynjolf’s protégé.
The title of protégé had long been swept aside, however, as many would argue the new Guildmaster had far succeeded their second in command in skill - Brynjolf being one of few to disputed such a statement - but none could deny their shared title of lovers, for it seemed neither made an effort to disguise their relationship.
Not ones to miss a celebration down in the sewers, the thief of the hour and their second in command were in attendance at the central table, the Guildmaster nested in Brynjolf’s lap, bottle held loosely in their grip, and an easy smile upon their face as their free fingers stroked idly through fiery red hair.
“Never dared to dream the guild would come this far love,” he voiced, head rested against their shoulder as he sat in quiet contemplation, his slightly inebriated mind drifting through the feats and foes the pair had faced together “couldn’t have done any of this without you. Though I suppose I deserve some credit for finding you in the first place.” The Nord chuckled, hand idly running across his companion’s thigh.
“Very funny, lad.” They jested, poorly executing his accent as they ruffled his hair. “Though I suppose you’re right, I’d still be picking pockets and roaming free without you.” A pinch to their rear silenced them rather quickly. “Fine, fine, I’d be nothing without you, the guild would be nothing without you, you’re a hell of a man.”
“Oh, say that last part again, I think I like it.” He chuckled, nuzzling into the soft skin of their neck.
“You’re a hell of a man, Brynjolf, my man, to be exact.” Their tone dropped, sultry and smooth and their fingers trailed down to graze over the fine hairs at the back of his neck, using the leverage to pull themselves against him, strategically rubbing against his crotch.
His eyes widened as he looked them over incredulously, gaze flicking to the company they were surrounded by. He took note rather quickly that none were at all interested in the love birds, not when they had the choice to watch Delvin attempt to drag Vex onto a table for a dance. Though, perhaps they were all waiting for the fight that was likely to ensue.
The thoughts and fears of wondering eyes were swiftly cast aside, however, as his lover spun in his lap, resting their elbows on the table, thus slotting his already stiffening cock snugly between their buttocks.
He tested his grip and their hip, tugging and releasing in time with steady rocks back and forth. Attempting to look nonchalant, he looked towards Delvin’s drunken performance, though that was exceptionally difficult given the rising tightness in his leathers.
The Guildmaster on the other hand, seemed to be coping just fine – to his annoyance – as they had now begun conversing with Vipir and Cynric who neighboured them at the table. Though he barely registered what they said, his lover’s words must have been truly enthralling for neither of the lower members noticed the slow gyration of the Guildmaster’s hips, an action strikingly similar to ones performed between the lovers in the privacy of Honeyside. They had both been naked those times – he thought, bitterly – and as he recalled, his cock had also been buried in them, his name rolling off their tongue in amorous euphoria.
It was that moment he realised he would not be receiving such sounds. No words of praise, no unbridled cry of his name at their climax. It was torture.
Delicious, torture.
The groan he let out was intentional. Honest.
Vekel seemed to be the only one that noticed the strange occurrence, and in a shockingly quick moment of genius, Brynjolf snatched up his companion’s now empty bottle.
“Another round of your finest Vekel, for the finest thief in the guild, and for the finest thieves in all of Tamriel!” The flagon erupted in cheers, despite his hopes of distracting the revelers with alcohol, Brynjolf now felt far too many eyes on him.
“To the guild, to nocturnal, and most importantly, to getting drunk blind!” The Guildmaster leaned back into him, taking the new beverage from the passing barkeep, and raising it in toast, expertly covered his now prominent bulge with their rear in the process. All around took a swig of their drink before going back to enjoying the festivities.
Not long after did Delvin dive headfirst from his stage, giving the pair the perfect distraction, one the Guildmaster in its entirety.
Hands on his knees and feet firm to the ground, they bounced on the straining bulge of his cock, the contact sending torturous shockwaves through his aching shaft. He moaned again, though he was smart enough to muffle it, his face buried in their neck as stray strands of his hair tickled their cheek. They laughed merrily; any who happened to glance over would surely mistake their lustful disposition as an alcohol-fuelled daze. He felt them clench, his hands straying to their ass to feel the muscles tighten and release. By the nine he wished for nothing more than to take them there and then, bent face-first into the table, onlookers be damned.
They’d fucked several times in risky places, including the cistern, but never had he entertained the idea of having people intentionally see them. He surprised himself by finding the thought obnoxiously appealing.
He could imagine it now, his cock balls deep inside them, his hand at the back of their neck pressing them into their desk, their moans and gasps echoing around the cistern with each of his thrusts. Niruin would miss every shot at his target, Thrynn would miss every swing at the training dummy, and Cynric would no doubt break several lockpicks as he desperately tried to focus on his practice chests. All others that occupied the space would have to bury themselves in their beds, or watch.
It would certainly stop the lecherous gazes some of the newer recruits dared to throw at his lover, as all would finally be able to see how good he made them feel. And how no one would be able to stand up to such a performance.
Such thoughts swam in his mind for Gods only knew how long, and without his consent, his fingers dug harder into their hips, and he began rocking up into them. Thankfully, his conscious hadn’t left him entirely, for he didn’t move with the intensity he would usually use to chase his release. His lover helped him further – thank the Gods! – by clutching their stomach in theatrical laughter, the way their body rocked and quaked causing delicious friction against his oversensitive cock.
Brynjolf came hard.
Were it not for the quality of the Guildmaster uniform, he would’ve ripped holes where his fingers clung to them, their leathers bunched in his fingers as he slowly came down from his high, his mind still racing with unsavoury thoughts, and blood beading at his bottom lip from how hard he’d bit into it.
He felt them shift, felt his cum smearing against his softened cock within his own breeches, and felt the warmth of their side once again resting against his chest as it had been before this encounter.
“You’re lucky Vex finally decided to start a fight, otherwise someone surely would’ve noticed how dazed you’d become. I would’ve assumed you’d plain of existence, were it not for the way you desperately attempted to rut into me without someone noticing.” Their breath fanned his skin, cool against his burning cheeks. They lay a kiss to the flushed skin, gently smoothing back his stray hairs from his eyes. “What were you thinking about?”
“Can’t tell you I’m afraid, after the stunt you just pulled, I don’t want to go putting ideas in your head.” He chuckled, pulling them in for a sparingly chaste kiss.
With an arm wrapped securely around their waist, he was finally able to lurch forward and take his own renewed tankard from the table, clinking the metal gently against their bottle.
“But I do have a mind full of ways to punish you for all this. So long as you have a plan to get me out of here without everyone seeing I’ve soiled myself.”

Demon With No Name
An analysis on Upper Moon Two: Douma
Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba spoilers!!
Hello! ❤ I wanted to discuss the significance on Douma’s real name never being revealed to us in the KNY story.
I'd love it if you guys could share your thoughts on this with me please!
Before I start:
Disclaimer: I do not speak Japanese at all, I’m basing all quotes off of the first manga site i could find. Translations may vary depending on the source. Also I may not be aware of alternate meanings of words that may have been lost in translation for the most important quotes! So please forgive me if I misinterpret something!!
A lot of the demons in KNY’s story are either nameless, or go by an alias that isn’t their real name. Examples of the former include most minor demons, such as the Temple Demon, Swamp Demon, Older brother/sister, Mother, and Father Spider demons, etc. Examples of the latter are mostly are more relevant Upper moon demons-- Daki, Akaza, and Kokushibou, whose real names are Ume, Hakuji, and Michikatsu respectively. The other upper moons, Nakime, Gyokko, and Hantengu, however, don’t have their human names revealed, along with Douma. However, these 3, did not hold as much story significance as Douma.
Then in addition to that, there are some demons who go by their human names still, such as Rui and Kaigaku. I assume it is because they are young enough relative to other demons age that they haven’t forgotten it (or maybe they just like their human names lol).
(I don’t know if Gyutaro’s name is his actual name or a fake name and, if it is a fake name, I don’t remember if his real name is actually given, which is weird because his sister’s was. But that’s a topic for another day.)
However, Douma, who holds the rank of Upper Moon 2, is one of the most relevant demons in the story, yet his real name is never disclosed. Even in the Kimetsu Acadmeny chapter extras, is stated that his AU version’s real name is unknown.
So, why is that? Douma even said so himself that he has great memory. He remembered many details of his life but he failed to ever disclose to us his name. Was that one thing he did forget? Was it not important to him? Did he simply not have a real name before becoming a demon? (Maybe his parents thought he was above having a normal human name?) And most importantly, was this intentionally done by Kyoharu Gotouge?
Before I continue, first we should know the meaning behind Douma’s name. His name is officially 童磨. According to the Kimetsu no Yaiba wiki, 童 ( dō ) means “child,” and 磨 (ma) which can mean “polishe,” “grind,” or “improve.” (Someone also said it can mean magic but I don’t have the source im sorry :( ) Based on these, Douma’s name has a meaning somewhere along the lines of “magical child” or “polished child.” This is most likely to reference how his parents thought he had divine powers at his birth.
For most people, your name is one of the most significant aspect of one’s identity. It’s the first bit of information you to give to anybody upon introduction. However, Douma’s unknown name is a demonstration of his own lack of personal identity.
If we take a look back at Douma’s childhood, he’s been put on as the figurehead of the Eternal Paradise cult from the day he could even sit up. His entire life he was put on a pedestal for an identity he did not make for himself, but one manufactured and forced onto him by his parents. In chapter 142, Douma admits that he can’t speak to the Gods or have any spiritual connections that his parents believe he has. In fact, he doesn’t even believe in any of it. If that’s the case, why does he seem so fixated on the idea of bringing his troubled followers to “paradise” as his sole reason for being born?
Earlier I mentioned that one large aspect of identity is our name. However, another important aspect in defining our identity is the personal relationships we have around us. Who we value and surround ourselves will shape our own individual perceptions of ourselves. However, Douma, who has admitted to having limited capability in feeling emotions, is unable to form meaningful bonds with people around him. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba is story where most, if not all, the main themes revolve around love, family, and friendship being the main motivators to drive characters in the pursuit of goals. However, here we have a character who serves as a direct antithesis to of all these themes. He has nobody he loves and nobody who loves him.
In chapter 157, Kanao calls out Douma in their fight, telling him she can see through the fake persona he puts on. She then proceeds to question him: “Why were you even born?” (damn....) Douma gave clearly visible cues that he was not pleased with what she had to say. The important observation to take from this scene is Douma’s reaction. The man who was just revealed to not feel any emotions, who is usually unbothered by harsh words thrown at him from demon slayers and other members of the upper moons alike, showed an emotional response to the cutting words of a child questioning his existence.
Based on this reaction, I think there is reason to believe Douma has an innate dissatisfaction with his own identity, or moreso his lack of identity. From his childhood, he’s been more than aware of how he cannot feel emotions the same as others. Even in his dying thoughts in chapter 163, he thinks back on how he was “always been this way.” He thinks about how human emotions to him were nothing more than “mere dreams.”
I think should we take a close look at the word choice used here. He could have simply said something along the lines of “I’ve never felt emotions;” however Gotouge specifically phrased it as a metaphor comparing it to dreams. This word choice conveys a sense of longing associated with the idea of being able to experience emotion. This suggests that there is a chance he did wish for a better understanding of emotions. After all, like Kanao said, what’s the point of living if one can’t truly indulge in all of life’s pleasures associated with the emotional bonds we build with one another?
However, what does all this of this have to do with Douma not having a name? Douma not having a name is symbolic of his entire character. He is a man with no true identity of his own. He was unable to maintain any close, meaningful, interpersonal relationships with anyone around him in the hundreds of years he lived. He lived every day with a false persona knowing deep down inside of him knowing he was different from everyone else around him, but not in the “spiritual way” that was expected of him. And in his own Nihilistic opinion, he felt his own life was pointless. But as a direct contradiction to those beliefs, he continues to lie to himself, telling himself the people need him to save them. It’s ironic--Douma, the man who mocked demon slayers’ efforts to do whatever they can to achieve their goals, is doing the most to do whatever he can to mask the emptiness he feels inside. His boastfulness of his cult, his over-acting of emotions, and his insistence of friendly and polite conversation even in the face of insults and attacks from opponents all demonstrate this. While he may not be able to process and understand emotions like most people, there is one thing that Douma appears to have in common with many people: wanting a sense of purpose and meaningfulness in life.
While Douma’s reason for becoming a demon is never explicitly disclosed in the manga, I think we have reason to suspect him of becoming a demon for the purpose of finding an identity to call his own. Muzan Kibutsuji is notorious for taking advantage of humans who are at their lowest points in their life. They have lost everything that mattered to them and have no one else to turn to. However, it was a different case with Douma--a man with no loved ones, no purpose, no real identity--already had nothing to lose to in the first place.
Despite all Douma thought he though he “dedicated [...] to people and made contributions to the world,” in the end, his choice to become a demon never brought him the sense of identity and purpose he sought out by the time of his death. Unlike even other demons, who had family members they could happily reunite with in death, he would simply be forgotten from the rest of the world. Sure, maybe the demon slayers will remember him as Douma, one of the strongest demons. However, there was not a single person who knew the real Douma, the real name behind the man who served as Upper Moon 2 under Muzan. He will just continue to remain nameless even in death. A cruel reminder of how any way Muzan’s involvement in any other demon’s life did nothing to improve any of their lives, if not worsen it.
I don’t think I worded this well but I hope it still makes sense to everyone 🥺

After All - Chapter 2/5
Cover art by @faith2nyc Read on AO3
Toddlers are an enigma. That much is clear to Natasha. Compared to infants, they’re leaps and bounds more amusing. But they’re terribly difficult to gauge – they long for independence, yet knowing exactly how much to give without under or overwhelming them is anyone's guess. That limbo in particular is one of the more complicated aspects of parenting she’s learning to navigate, both emotionally and logistically. For as much as she’s excited to see what else is to come of Isabel’s burgeoning personality, there are days where she finds herself longing for the little cuddle bug who willingly gave her its complete cooperation without so much as a peep. And right now, as she sits on the play mat in her living room trying to get a sweater over her squirming daughter’s head, she notes that today happens to be one of those days.
“Mama, ‘nuff!” she hears Isabel protest, her voice muffled by the soft cotton.
“Almost done, fig,” she says as she successfully gets Isabel’s head through the collar. “Tada!” Despite her enthusiasm, Isabel does not look the least bit amused, and as she leans forward to try to smooth the curls on her head that got ruffled in the process, the little girl dodges her hand with artful precision to reach for her blocks. With a shake of her head, she feels for her phone behind her, holding it up to point the camera at Isabel. “Okay, what do you think of this one?”
On screen, Pepper can only sigh. “It looks great. As did the first two sweaters you put on her.”
“But this one is cuter,” she reasons, zooming in on the embroidered flowers at the hem. “Look!”
“Nat,” Pepper says, her lips pressing into a line. “She’s spending the day with her father, not going to meet the Queen.”
“Maybe not intentionally,” she says. “This is London, after all. You never know when you’ll run into Her Majesty.”
“Natasha.” Pepper’s stern tone causes her to bite her lip, and when she musters the courage to look back at the screen, she finds her best friend regarding her carefully. “Are you having second thoughts about letting Steve come out to visit?”
“No,” she says, sighing at the way Pepper narrows her eyes. “I’m not, okay? And even if I was, it’s too late anyway. He’s literally on his way. It’s just- It’s not like there’s protocol for spending Christmas with your…” She puts her hand out, as if doing so would make the end of her sentence magically come to mind. But when you ask someone to have a child with you, and you end up falling in love with them, only for them to break your heart into a million little pieces later on when they don’t reciprocate your feelings, knowing what to accurately call them is complicated, to say the least. She rolls her eyes. “Whatever. It’s just unconventional, is what I’m saying.” Pepper’s lips part to speak, no doubt about her ironic choice of adjective, so she holds up a finger before she can. “Not a word.”
“Okay, okay,” Pepper acquiesces. “Just wanted to make sure that weirdness is the only reason you put my goddaughter through three outfit changes and not… other things.”
“Trust me, Pep, those other things have been pushed so far back into the closet they’re in Narnia,” she says quietly. All her worries that night Steve had sent her a text turned out to be for nothing. She’d expected something big and life-altering, maybe news that he’d moved on and he wanted Isabel there for his wedding, but as it turned out, it was only a request to spend Christmas with them. “Anyway, it does not matter how weirded out I am by the circumstances. I got hurt... Maybe he did, too.” She lets her eyes linger to the mat where Isabel is still happily entertaining herself before shaking her head. “But that’s all water under the bridge now, and when possible, our daughter deserves to be with both her parents for Christmas. That’s why I agreed to this.”
“Well, I’m proud of you for being so mature about all this,” Pepper says. “I know it’s not easy.”
“It is what it is,” she says dismissively, giving Pepper a one-shouldered shrug. It’s only when the doorbell rings that her brave façade slips, her eyes widening involuntarily.
“It’ll be fine, Nat,” Pepper says, offering her a reassuring smile. “Talk to you soon.”
With a two-fingered salute, she cuts the video, placing her phone in her back pocket and stealing another glance at Isabel to make sure she’s sufficiently preoccupied. Satisfied, she huffs out a breath and gives her reflection a cursory glance at the mirror, tucking a tendril of hair back as she makes her way to the front door. She reaches for the knob, putting on her best smile as she pulls it open.
“Hey,” Steve greets, smiling brightly as he stands at her front door dressed in dark jeans and a leather jacket.
“You shaved,” she blurts out, inwardly cursing at how quickly the words had fallen out of her mouth.
To her relief, he chuckles. “Oh yeah,” he says, reaching a hand up to his jaw. “I grew it out again for a bit there, but I know Izzie’s not a fan of it, so…”
“She might be a little more amenable now,” she says, though it comes across more like she’s wondering aloud, so she adds, “not that you need a beard or anything.”
“Yeah, no, it would be nice to get to keep it,” he says, gesturing to their surroundings, “especially when it gets cold like this.” His excitement is palpable as he cranes his neck slightly, as if to peek behind her. “Is she awake?”
“Oh, yes! Sorry, please come in.” She steps aside, opening the door wider to let him through. “You got in late last night, right? How was your flight?”
“I did, and it was okay,” he says as he follows her down the foyer. “The customs line at Heathrow, though, a little less so.”
She looks over her shoulder to shoot him a look of sympathy, knowing full well what that headache is like. “She just got up from her morning nap about an hour ago,” she says as they walk into the living room, and she does not have to turn around to know that the faint gasp Steve lets out is in awe of the sight of Isabel pushing her little vacuum cleaner around before them. “Izzie, baby, look who’s here.”
Isabel looks up at the sound of her voice, freezing in place as her eyes go from her and then to Steve, who steps forward and crouches down, opening his arms as he reaches for her. “Hi, fig!”
A smile grazes her lips when Isabel begins to scamper over at Steve’s greeting, but it quickly fades – as does Steve’s elated expression – when their daughter moves past him to hide behind her legs instead. “Hey, it’s okay,” she says automatically, bending down to collect Isabel, who buries her face into her neck, into her arms. She turns to Steve. “I’m so sorry, I don’t know-”
“No,” he says placatingly, and though he tries to blink away the hurt in his eyes, she catches it all the same. “It’s my fault. I shouldn’t have assumed-”
“No, you were fine,” she says in her most reassuring voice. “She’s usually really friendly, but her quirks change every day now, it seems.” Steve nods at her, and she turns towards Isabel, dusting a kiss to the crown of her head and rubbing a hand soothingly up and down her back. “It’s okay, fig. It’s just Daddy.” When Isabel looks up at her, she reaches into her pocket, showing her the phone. “We talk all the time, remember? And we read stories before bedtime…”
Isabel looks at the phone in her hand and then at her, her big blue eyes skeptical. “Dada?”
“Yes, yes,” she says excitedly, eyeing Steve over Isabel’s head as she mouths, “talk to her.”
“Hi, Izzie,” Steve says, prompting Isabel to peek shyly at him. He smiles. “It’s me, Daddy. Remember? On the phone we said in two more sleeps we were gonna go on adventures?”
It’s with bated breath that she waits for Isabel’s reaction. The little girl purses her lips, and it’s almost by instinct that she braces herself for a meltdown, but instead, she finds herself nearly sighing in relief when Isabel leans forward and reaches for Steve. “Dada!”
“Yes, baby girl, Dada!” Steve says as he takes Isabel into his arms, standing and beaming from ear to ear when she wraps her arms around his neck. “Oh, I’ve missed you so much!” He kisses her cheek as he moves to settle her against his hip. “How’s my girl?”
“I play!” Isabel exclaims, her words promptly descending into gibberish as she goes on and on.
She watches as Steve nods along amusedly, barely containing his smile as he listens to Isabel talk. “Yeah, so…” she interjects, prompting Steve to look her way. “You’ll get about two, maybe three actual words from her before you have to use context clues and the Science of Deduction to figure out the rest.”
Steve laughs. “That’s about as much as I get from Tony, so I think I’ll manage.”
“Touché,” she says, chuckling when Isabel demands to be put down and stalks back to her mat. She points a thumb over her shoulder. “Can I get you something to drink before you guys leave? There’s still some coffee in the pot if you want some.”
Steve nods, and as they walk the short distance to her kitchen, she notices how he immediately positions himself by the counter overlooking the living room. “Still not a tea person, huh?”
Her expression sours as she begins to pour him a cup, eliciting a laugh from him. “I don’t think the British government will appreciate me becoming a menace to society.”
He smirks as he accepts the mug from her. “How’s work?”
“It’s… going,” she says, shrugging at the questioning look he sends her. “T’Challa, Nakia, and I finally got the company up and running both on paper and digital, but you know how it is when the truth ruffles some feathers.”
“Hmm,” he says, nodding in acknowledgement. “Same S-H-I-T, different continent, huh?”
“She can’t hear you,” she says with an amused smile as she goes to rinse the pot in the sink. “But basically, yes. We ran a piece about a member of Parliament and some of his unsavory practices. Nothing but the truth there, but it’s not being received well, which is why Izzie and I couldn't make it back in time for Christmas.”
“I kinda figured the article would have them clutching their pearls.”
She turns to him, surprised. “You read The Pioneer?”
“Yeah,” he says, “I-”
The unmistakable clang of metal as it hits the ground interrupts him, followed immediately by Isabel’s proclamation of oh no, and that’s enough to send them both racing out of the kitchen and back into the living room to see Isabel standing over the now scattered tin of cookies that was sitting on the coffee table.
She turns to Steve, crossing her arms over her chest. “By the way, she likes knocking things over for S-H-I-T-S and giggles now, too.”
He cringes. “Any chance her vacuum cleaner actually works?”
It’s after the crumbs in her living room are sorted out and they both manage to convince their daughter to put and keep her shoes on that she stands outside her front door, watching as Steve swings the baby bag over his shoulder and picks Isabel up.
“Anything else about this one that I should know before we go?” Steve asks, jostling Isabel slightly in emphasis.
“Let’s see…” she says, “well, she hates socks with a ferocity. I did you a solid by getting them on, but if for any reason you have to take them off, know that you’re never going to get them on again. Also, nine times out of ten her answer to anything is no, so use your discretion when seeking her opinion.” Steve’s lips part, but before he can speak, she adds, “Oh, and she’s on a hunger strike. I’m told it’s just a phase, but hey, if you can get her to eat, more power to you.”
Steve stands there, blinking once and then twice. “Okay...” he says, turning to Isabel. “Well, don’t you sound delightful.”
“No,” Isabel says with a shake of her head.
“You sure you don’t want to take the stroller?” she asks when Steve’s face falls at their daughter’s swift reply, and she has to bite the inside of her cheek to keep from laughing.
“Nah, I think we’ll be fine,” he says. “I’ll have her back in a few hours.”
“Sounds good,” she says before waving at Isabel. “Bye, Iz! Have fun.”
“Bye!” Isabel says, waving back.
She waits for Steve and Isabel to walk down the block, and once they disappear from her vantage point, she returns inside, letting out a breath and feeling a lot more at ease than she did when she had woken up this morning. With any luck, maybe this didn’t have to be the debacle she thought it might be.
He should have taken the stroller.
The thought loops continuously in Steve’s mind as he lengthens his strides along the cobblestone paths of Kensington Gardens in an attempt to keep up with his daughter. “Izzie, slow down, babe!” he calls out, half in astonishment at seeing Isabel zoom past him with ease and half in anxiousness over the uneven grounds beneath their feet. The plea only spurns her on though, and he finds himself chuckling under his breath when she attempts to run. “Come here, you little daredevil!”
Isabel dissolves into a fit of giggles as he collects her in his arms, lifting her to him to pepper her face with kisses. “Dada, no!”
“You keep this up, you’re gonna scrape your knees,” he tries to explain though he knows it’s an exercise in futility. If there’s anything he’s learned in the last couple of hours since they left Natasha’s flat, it’s that trying to reason with his eighteen-month-old is practically like talking to a wall.
“Walk,” Isabel insists, blinking up at him as if he hadn’t said a word. But then she smiles, the type that spans so wide it reaches her eyes and bares all her milky white teeth that his heart is helpless to do anything but melt in his chest.
“Fine,” he says with a sigh, ignoring the teasing he can hear in his head from everyone in his life about how easily he’s charmed. “But you have to hold Daddy’s hand, okay?”
“‘kay,” Isabel says as he puts her back down on her feet, and he can’t help but grin when she offers up her hand for him to take.
By the time they make it to the Italian Gardens, Isabel tires enough that she does not protest when he picks her up to get a better view of the fountains, and as she points to every little thing that catches her attention and narrates her thoughts to him, he’s relieved by how quickly she’s readjusted to his presence. There was a part of him that had anticipated her skepticism of him this morning – for as much as they FaceTimed three times a week, he knows that it’s still not a substitute for her seeing him every day – though he has to admit that the way she had run to Natasha as if he were some stranger still stinged. Heartbreak is something he knows a little too well, but being rejected by his own daughter is one type he hopes he’ll never have to experience ever again.
Luckily for him, that doesn’t seem to be in the cards any longer. Isabel’s been nothing but receptive to him since they left, and for his part, he’s been all but entranced by every new facet of her personality that he’s discovered. She’s still the same precocious and affectionate little girl he remembers from six months ago, only now she’s more gregarious, and he can’t recall having laughed as much as he has since they’ve set out together this morning.
“Look!” Isabel says, and as he turns his gaze towards the direction her finger is pointed in, he makes out one of the urns of the Tazza fountain.
“Do you know what that is?” he asks, observing Isabel’s reaction. Though it’s been a while since he’s been able to spend this much time with her, he realizes that despite her evolving personality, there’s a familiarity to her mannerisms and proclivities, and that’s because it’s so inherently Natasha – much like the way her nose is scrunched up now as she tries to answer his question. But there are also parts of himself that he’s found in her in the last couple of hours, such as the way her shoulders sag in defeat when she’s being reprimanded, and he finds some comfort in the reminder that regardless of the time they spend apart, they’ll always be intrinsically connected.
Isabel turns back to him, her eyes growing wide with excitement. “Do-phin?”
“Yes, baby girl!” he says, earning a squeal of delight from Isabel when he kisses her cheek. “You’re right, it’s a dolphin. Good job!” He turns away from the fountain, reaching behind him to fish his phone out of his pocket and opening it up to the camera. “Okay, now smile so we can send grandma a picture.”
“No!” Isabel says immediately, turning her face away.
He puts his phone down, chuckling. “You win some, you lose some.”
The next day, he pretends not to notice Natasha’s I-Told-You-So expression when he asks for the stroller before he and Isabel set out on another day of sightseeing. Yesterday had been a real eye opener for him in terms of getting to know his daughter’s quirks, and as he pushes Isabel through St. James Park, he revels in having been better prepared this time around. While he hadn’t succeeded in getting pictures of her facing the camera on their previous outing, he’s certain and feeling a touch triumphant at having taken enough today to satisfy both his family and his friends in their respective group chats. The trick, he learned, lies in phrasing the idea of taking the picture to Isabel in a form of a question instead of a command. It seemed silly, but as he’s learning, such is toddler logic. Plus, in the end, the elaborate charade of it all is worth it if it meant sticking it to Bucky for harping on his photography skills.
It’s when he and Isabel are walking out of a restaurant two days later that he hears his phone ring, and as he looks at the name flashing on the screen, he pushes the stroller to the side, turning it until Isabel is facing him. “It’s momma,” he mouths to Isabel, who looks up at him, before bringing the phone to his ear. “Hey, we’re on our way back.”
“Hey,” Natasha says, and his eyebrows immediately furrow at the exasperated sigh that accompanies her greeting. “That’s actually why I’m calling. I ran into a problem at work and won’t be home for another hour or two and I know it’s almost her bedtime. Do you mind staying with her until I get back?”
“Yeah, of course,” he says. “Everything okay?”
“Yes, just need to sort something out here sooner rather than later,” she says. “But are you sure you don’t mind? Because I can get-”
“Natasha,” he interrupts. “I’ve got her. Do what you have to do.”
“Thank you,” Natasha says, gratitude thick in her voice. “I’ll be home as soon as I can, but make yourself comfortable and help yourself to whatever’s in my kitchen if you want. But also maybe try not to judge what’s in it, yeah?”
“Duly noted,” he says with a chuckle, thankful that such is the rapport they’ve built since he arrived that she’s comfortable enough to joke around with him. “Oh, but before you go.” His eyes fall to Isabel, who’s busying herself with her new Beefeater doll, before he shakes his head. “Do you have a hair dryer I can borrow?”
A sigh slips from Natasha’s lips when she walks into her flat and haphazardly rids herself of her heels, shoving the pair off to the side as she makes her way down the foyer. The living room is empty when she enters, and the first thing she notices is how much neater the space looks – gone are the toys Isabel had scattered around, and for once, the throw pillows on her couch actually align properly. But when her gaze falls to the recliner on the left and then to the black coat draped over the back, all her questions are immediately answered.
“Steve?” she calls out. “You in here?” When she does not get a reply, she steps further into the room, suddenly becoming aware of the whirring sound coming from down the hall. She decides to follow it, and when it leads her to the open doorway of the bathroom, she can only chuckle as she peers inside. “So that’s what you needed the hair dryer for.”
Steve whips around at the sound of her voice, a startled expression on his face as he holds the dryer in one hand and his shirt in the other. “Oh hey,” he says, thumbing the dryer off. “Uh… sorry, I didn’t hear you come in over the noise.”
“Well, if I’m being honest, I’m a little disappointed,” she admits, smirking when his face twists in confusion. “When you asked to borrow my dryer, I was hoping it was because you gave Izzie a bath and decided to give her a fabulous blowout.”
“I did give her a bath,” he says, a tinge of indignance in his voice as he points to the tub. “But I also had to give my shirt a bath on the account of the little rascal throwing her spaghetti at me.” He shoots her a withering look when she throws her head back, cackling. “Ha ha, very funny.”
“Yeah, probably should have warned you about that,” she says, rolling her lips in an attempt to taper her laughter. “She asleep already?”
“Got her down about a half hour ago,” he says.
Though she already knew the answer, his confirmation still evokes disappointment in her. “I’m gonna go kiss her goodnight,” she tells him, turning and making her way towards the end of the hall. Isabel’s room is dimly lit by her night light, and carefully, she tiptoes towards the crib, bending down to press a kiss to her forehead. For a moment, she allows herself to just watch the rise and fall of her daughter’s chest, letting the peaceful image wash away the fatigue from her day. Then with sigh and a final glance at her, she exits the room in search of a much needed nightcap.
The kitchen tiles are cold under her feet as she makes a beeline for the fridge, and as she pulls the door open to inspect its contents, she hears her name being called out. “Kitchen!” she yells back. The sound of footsteps coming her way is the only response, and she looks over her shoulder in time to see Steve appear by the frame, his shirt back on and its sleeves rolled past his elbows. “Want a beer?” she asks, only to silently admonish herself when she sees the way Steve’s brows shoot up in surprise. “I’m sorry, I’ve kept you long enough, haven’t I? You probably have things to do-”
“No,” he interrupts, clearing his throat as he straightens his stance. “A beer would be nice, actually.”
She smiles. “Stella still good with you?” When he nods, she turns back to the fridge, grabbing two bottles before using her foot to shut the door. She twists off the caps before handing the other bottle to him, and when he mutters a thank you, she nods towards her living room.
“So let me get this straight…” she hears him say as she plops down on the couch and he takes a seat on the recliner. “You’re still a coffee addict but no longer a vodka fiend?” He clicks his tongue. “Gotta be honest, I always thought that if one had to go, it would be the coffee.”
“First of all,” she says, propping her feet up on the coffee table. “I would never give up either. But gun to my head, it would be coffee, yes.” She lifts her bottle up as if to inspect it. “Vodka is still my poison of choice. I just haven’t had the time to replenish.”
“Bad day?” he asks as she takes a long swig from her bottle.
“You don’t know the half of it,” she groans, placing her bottle down to dig the heels of her hands into her eyes.
A beat passes before she hears him ask, “Wanna talk about it?”
Her eyes blink open in surprise, and she turns to look at him. “You really want to hear about work stuff?”
“Only if you want to talk about it,” he says with a shrug.
For a second, she can only sit there, blinking as she contemplates his offer. In the last few days since he arrived, they’ve been cordial enough with one another that asking him to stay with Isabel as she sorted out some pressing issues at work tonight didn’t feel like that big of an imposition. Now here she is, commandeering more of his time by inviting him to have a beer with her that, surely, it would be rude of her to unload on him about her harrowing workday, too. But as she turns back to him, the earnestness of his expression convinces her to throw caution to the wind. She sighs, sinking further into her seat. “It’s just a lot of… bullshit,” she says, leaning her elbow on the arm rest as they both laugh at her word choice. “The member of Parliament I was talking about a few days ago? This morning he threatened to sue us for defamation.” Concern paints his features at her words, but she’s quick to wave it off. “We already talked to legal about it. It’s all a power play. With the amount of evidence we have to back up our claims, he does not have a case.”
“Then what’s the problem?” he asks.
“I don’t know,” she says, looking up at the ceiling. “Once upon a time, I would have found intimidation tactics like this a fun challenge... In fact, I lived for these hurdles. I liked knowing my work was keeping people like him up at night, because it meant I was hitting at the truth. But nowadays?” She shrugs, looking back at him. “I guess the exhaustion just sinks down to the bone a little more… and it’s not that I don’t love my job, I do. Becoming editor-in-chief has always been on my career bucket list and I know I’m very fortunate to be where I am today. It’s just that checking every little thing off of that list isn’t everything to me anymore.” She nods towards the hallway. “She is.”
“No, I totally get it,” he says, and for the first time in a while, she feels relief wash over her at the certainty that fills his eyes. “I didn’t know that being a curator was something I wanted to do until Tony and Pepper approached me about it. Discovering all these new artists has been great-”
“And the gift baskets too, I’m sure,” she adds, smirking at the questioning look that crosses his face. “Darcy catches me up on the office gossip. She said you get a lot of loot from people vying to interview you.”
“I leave whatever I get in the breakroom and let them fight over it,” he explains, smiling as she chuckles. “But yeah, the feeling of professional accomplishment I’ve had these last couple of years? Doesn’t even come close to how it felt when Izzie looked up at me tonight as I was putting her to bed and told me, unprompted, that she loved me.”
“I lah you,” she says, making them both chuckle as she mimics Isabel’s voice. “Kinda knocks you off your feet a little, huh?” He nods, to which she smiles. “Anyway, enough talking about work and our lives’ purpose for one night. What did you two get into today?”
“See for yourself,” he says, pulling his phone out of his pocket and handing it to her. “I thought she might like to see horse drawn carriages like in her bedtime stories, so we went to the Royal Mews. I think she really enjoyed it. Well, save for the little meltdown she had when I wouldn’t let her pet the” – he puts out his free hand, making air quotations with his index and middle fingers – “ponies.”
She scoffs, handing him back his phone. “If it was just a little meltdown, consider yourself lucky. She once face-planted on the floor of a Tesco because I wouldn’t let her carry the carton of eggs while we shopped.”
“Toddlers, huh?” he says with a shake of his head.
“They’re cute for a reason,” she concurs. “What about tomorrow?”
“We were going to see Big Ben, but then I learned that it’s boarded up,” he says, his gaze falling to the watch on his wrist. “Oh, wow. Speaking of tomorrow, though, I have to work a little in the morning before I come get her, so I should probably get going.” When she nods in acknowledgement, he stands, reaching for his coat. “But anyway, we might just do the aquarium instead. That place any good?”
She shrugs. “Wouldn’t know. Never been.”
“You’ve never been to the aquarium?” he asks incredulously, his eyes widening when she shakes her head no. “Have you at least gone to other sites? Like the Tower?”
“I’ve seen it. It’s on my bus route to work.”
“Natasha,” he says in equal parts amusement and admonishment.
“I’ve been busy,” she argues. “And taking a not even two-year-old to the Tower of London where they keep all the shiny Crown Jewels that she’s not allowed to touch?” She scoffs. “I’m not a glutton for punishment, Steve.”
“They’re encased in glass boxes,” he reasons, to which she rolls her eyes before turning to straighten the throw pillows on the couch. There’s a pause, and just when she assumes that he’s chosen to let the argument go, he sighs. “You should come with us.”
“What?” she asks, turning to him, pillow still in hand. “Steve, I can’t-”
“You got plans?” he challenges.
“Not for a few days, no, but I do have mounds of laundry to do,” she says, scoffing when he crosses his arms over his chest. “Hey, she might be small, but she goes through a lot of clothes and they’re a pain to fold.”
“You can do laundry when you get back,” he dismisses. “Come on, Nat. You’re the one that made fun of me for not having been to The Met before.”
“That’s not the same. You had been living in Manhattan for years at that point,” she says before gesturing around her flat. “Look, I know you couldn’t help yourself and tidied up this living room, you weirdo. But trust me when I say there’s more to clean!” When his knowing gaze does not let up, she scoffs. And maybe it’s the catharsis from having shared her qualms about work with the only person who truly understands her predicament, or the way they’d seamlessly fallen into conversation as if it hadn’t been ages since they last sat back and had a beer together, but either way, she finds her determination wavering. With a sigh, she puts the pillow back down on the couch. “Fine, okay. Okay. I’ll go.”
“Okay,” he says, suddenly looking triumphant. As he begins to make his way towards the door, she follows him, raising a brow in question when he puts a hand on the knob only to turn back to her. He shrugs. “I know the consequences of your work are exhausting, but for what it’s worth… I think we’re all pretty lucky to have you fighting to get the truth out there.”
Despite how tired she feels, her lips turn up in a smile. “Thank you,” she says with a nod of her head. “Goodnight, Steve.”
“Goodnight, Nat.”

Nobody asked for a Qi Ye reaction post but here one is nonetheless (at almost 1500 words.... hello.)
[~spoilers~]
One of the first things I can say is that I love love LOVE Priest’s writing style. It’s hard to say how much of this is a translation thing, because I did get the vibe that this translation was a lot smoother and better than the other cnovel translations I happen to have read. But god!! Her style is very densely allusive, and a challenge to follow at times, but so so beautiful. The story’s narration also shifts perspective a lot in the middle of chapters, which gives it this almost cinematic bird’s eye effect for me (except with internal-emotional states more than visuals). I can see it being the kind of thing that might bother people, but I love it – and I think that it ties in with the themes about the ephemerality and impermanence of life, and the way these little moments are all part of a much bigger sphere of existence.
I also like the way she does humour more than MXTX, honestly? I find the slapstick humour in MXTX’s works to be overdone and distracting from the other story and characterization work going on in her works. Whereas here, the humour landed more and also felt like it tied in more with the actual development of character and themes. Like, for instance, Liang Jiuxiao’s battle with the sable wherein he gets scratched every time and exhausts Beiyuan’s entire supply of antidote – it’s over the top, but also genuinely funny to me, AND I feel the comedic setup of Liang Jiuxiao constantly being an unwanted visitor contrasts very well with the entire heartbreaking scenario involving Beiyuan drugging him for Zhou Zishu, as well as his general progression from a Pure of Heart, Dumb of Ass archetype to being completely shattered by the evil and corruption in the world.
(The Sex and Kissing stuff is also, imo, more sensual and generally hotter to me than MXTX’s stuff – not trying to pick on her specifically, she’s just my only point of comparison for these novels.)
The main romance is ehhh… Mixed Feelings? I loved Wu Xi in all the parts he wasn’t playing the role of “love interest who expresses their love via violent jealousy”, but the parts where he WAS…. woof. Like, I don’t necessarily mind jealousy when it’s internal sensations, or when it’s a very intentionally fucked up dynamic, but I like it less so when it’s couple who’s riding off into the sunset and are the only foil to the general aura of melancholy and sadness in a story? Really hope that’s a one-off specific piece of characterization and not a general Thing for Priest…
I did actually like the gradual development of Beiyuan’s feelings, and the way there’s no Big Moment of Realization – or rather, there is a moment of realization, but it’s not super dramatic, it’s just sort of settling into something that’s been there awhile.
Another problem with their relationship for me though, I think, is how rushed the denouement of the book is, and how many important things are glossed over. Like, okay, they’re riding off into the sunset, but are they actually going to talk about the fact that Beiyuan seduced Wu Xi for Deception Purposes and then drugged him…? Taking advantage of Wu Xi’s very earnest and intense feelings in the process? Like, they stay in the capital for three months of negotiations before they leave, all while Wu Xi hides Beiyuan in his house – there must have been conversations and Relationship Negotiations? And yet we don’t See any of that, we’re just treated to them riding off in a carriage with some cheeky little line about how Beiyuan has the rest of his life to make things up to Wu Xi (presumably by having rough sex)… like ok.
The racism… there was a lot of it in the presentation of Nanjiang! I think the thing that stood out to me though was the line about Wu Xi’s having a kind of intuitive understanding of how people are (an intuition attributed to children, even!) despite not being cultured – it slots so perfectly into the kind of colonial propaganda that posits colonized people as having this innate, intuitive understanding of the world or connection with nature or what have you – but of course they’re not mature, they’re not cultured, they don’t have the capacity for rationality, that we do. To be fair, the line I’m thinking of is also applied to Liang Jiuxiao, but it is of a piece with how Nanjiang is characterized throughout the novel – like, oh, they’re so simple! When they like someone they just get married! It’s presented as a romantic ideal, but in a way that portrays Nanjiang as being Simple and Rustic and lacking the cultural complexity of the Great Qing. (Especially since we b a r e l y see the country or its people on the page.)
(Not to mention the way Wu Xi’s bodyguards from Nanjiang are portrayed as being confused and grossed out by him being in love with a man – contrasted with the commentary about how commonplace sex between men is in the Great Qing. Feels very like Nanjiang gets cast as less “enlightened”?)
I think those elements are also part of why the romance doesn’t fully stick its landing for me – because Wu Xi does take in and consider Great Qing cultural stuff, and incorporate it into his worldview alongside the influence of his home culture – and we don’t see Beiyuan doing something similar in return. He wants to leave for Nanjiang in part because he’s exhausted with capital politics and wants freedom, but why Nanjiang specifically? What does the country mean to him? How’s he actually going to fit in there? (This is another thing that also could have been filled in more with more actual writing about what goes down after that final battle.)
I honestly was deeply moved by Helian Yi. I shed literal tears for that man on multiple occasions. I do feel like I would have benefitted from more actual exploration of his past life-relationship with Beiyuan? Because as it was, I felt like that aspect of Beiyuan’s characterization was kind of informed rather than fleshed out – what did he see in Helian Yi in the first place? And I think the unrequited love would have been more poignant if we’d had more flashbacks to when it was requited.
Also, the possible-incest reveal?? What even was the point of that…? (I know people have posited that that’s why Helian Yi originally had Beiyuan killed, but with that final deleted-on-JJWXC extra I feel like it’s meant to be that he thought Beiyuan was responsible for Su Qingluan’s death. Another thing that should have been elaborated on, plot-wise…)
In general, the ending was very rushed. It gave me distinct “project due the next day” vibes.
ZHOU ZISHU!!!! – my main emotional engagement with this, tbh. I loved what was done with him, loved getting to see more of the atrocities he was behind (haha), loved the chilling “ends justify the means” ideological track he was on, loved how enmeshed he was in Hierarchy and political intrigue and how Carefully he handled himself around his social superiors… yeah.
I am also…. Also losing my mind over the entire Vibe between Zhou Zishu and Liang Jiuxiao. Misplaced devotion… broken pedestals… weird subtextual hard-to-define Feelings... selfishly wanting to hide the worst parts of yourself from someone…. Ahhhhh it’s good. Love those intricate complex homoerotic friendships. If there Exists any fic (whether platonic or less so) that anyone wants to rec… pls do 👀
I have to say, another problem I had with the ending was that I don’t think the tonal dissonance was well-balanced. Like, there’s a very melancholy atmosphere for pretty much everyone except the main couple, and I do understand that their getting away from the capital is the only thing that engenders that happiness (as a big theme of the book is that the politicking in the capital is exhausting and demoralizing – and to my understanding that is similar to the themes at work in Faraway Wanderers.) But I don’t feel as though those two streams were working in communication with each other in the final chapters – I would say that the cutesy scenes with the main couple just felt jarring in contrast to the sadness and regret that permeated the rest of the narrative. I think perhaps they were too saccharine, rather than emphasizing escape and looking forward to different possibilities? I’m not sure. (It also seems questionable to present Nanjiang as an Escape, given that Wu Xi is in charge now?? They’re still right in the thick of politics?) Anyway, this all is why I like the placement of that final extra at the end of the narrative, because it Is a turning back to melancholia that I like to see during nominal happy endings.

Writer ask meme - everything divisible by 3
Sorry this took so long to reply to! I was writing out my responses today, but while watching Rosewell New Mexico with my roommate and that show is SO good. anyways this is really, really long so I will put part of it under a read more however if you are reading TAoL and want a sneak peak at an upcoming chapter, my answer to 36 is the entire first scene for that chapter
3. What is your favorite/least favorite part about writing? Other than the obvious writer's block, I think that my least favorite part is feeling insecure/wanting validation via comments and such. Writing is something I really enjoy doing and take great pride in trying to grow as a writer, but it's impossible to completely shake off that feeling of insecurity and sadness over something that doesn't get comments. There's this common thing in fandom where like you can pour a lot of heart and energy into something, be really skilled, only for it to get overlooked. There's obviously a lot of reasons for that, but some of those reasons are kind of annoying—like god forbid something not have sex in it, ya know?
6. Favorite character you’ve written?
So, that's hard.... If we're talking the canon Naruto characters, it can really vary from story to story. I obviously enjoy writing Gaara and Lee, but I was surprised to find that I really enjoy writing Shikamaru, Kankurou, Temari, Neji, and Tenten as well. I think all of them are really interested, have a lot of potential, and are fun in very different ways. Kankurou is definitely just flat out fun to write, and I think Tenten is very similar in the way she's fun to write. I think this like handful of characters are all faves for very different reasons so it's hard to say who my absolute fave is, but I really enjoy writing all of them. Definitely my fave thing is being able to write all of them interacting together, however.
9. Favorite/least favorite tropes?
Least: Soulmates. I hate that shit with a passion—it's boring, it's artificial, it's easy. There was a post I just saw recently that said “soulmates are stupid. I love you on purpose” and that just sums up so much of my issue with soulmates. If something is predetermined by some fucking cosmic power, do you really ever love that person? Do you really ever know that person? Soulmate AUs will always be something that bore me and also insight anger. It's just not for me, and I wish that fandom spaces would just get over it, in all honesty. Fave: uh. I don’t really know about like trope-wise. I just really like anything with good world building and politics.
12. Which story of yours do you like best? Why? Oh gosh.... um. That's really hard to answer because every story I write has a special place in my heart for different reasons. Alliance is my baby; TAoL is a huge emotional investment and has allowed me to grow even more as a writer; Absolution is something I've always wanted to explore; Flyweight Love is super fun and cute; IEYH is a new experiment in writing for me; GoD was also an experiment... and on and on. It's hard to pick like a favorite story because like they're all my faves in different ways. There are certainly things I like more or prefer, like I'm not that into modern Aus as much so it's easier for me to say that like Find Me isn't a one of my best—it isn't, there's a lot of things I want to fix on it, and while it is a decent fic, it's not like groundbreaking imo. But like for all of the things that need fixing with Alliance, that fic is my baby and really grounded me as a writer in a way no other writing project had before it. So like I could never not love it. Anyways, I'm babbling at this point, but basically I love all my fics so I can't choose.
15. How do you deal with self-doubt when writing? Rereading my writing tends to help and hoarding some of my favorite comments I've been left by readers. I know I'm a good writer, self-doubt and insecurities aside, so re-reading stuff is really a good confidence booster—but when that's not enough, it is really helpful to look back at old comments.
18. Tell us about that one book you’ll never let anyone read
Of mine??? Well, obviously by 'book' we're going with fanfiction because none of my original content is at a point where I'd really even consider it for this question. Um. Honestly, I don't think there's much if anything. Maybe some HP fics but not because I'm not like... proud of the writing or premise. Like I'd say my ideas are really good, it's just a matter of like my own time management and shit.
21. What aspect of your writing are you most proud of?
My world building. I'm also generally proud of the premises I come up with, and the themes I explore with my writing. Like I think I'm a good writer in terms of the like technical writing aspect—pros and such—and also characters, but I think I excel at world building and overall plot.
24. Do you remember the moment you decided to become a writer/author? The first time I ever wrote anything I was seven years old. I was at a party for my mom's boss? I think it was a birthday party? Anyway, I was the only kid there—which was fine because I was used to being the only kid in gatherings—but I was sitting alone by like a window and I just like started writing a poem about the night. That was like the first time that writing really became a part of me. When I was thirteen, when my mom got sick, I started writing poetry more. And when I was fourteen, I started writing fanficiton and that's kinda just... never stopped. I've been writing stories ever since.
27. Every writer’s least favorite question - where does your inspiration come from? Do you do certain things to make yourself more inspired? Is it easy for you to come up with story ideas?
My inspiration comes from everywhere, not to like be cliched. But inspiration really is in everything and everyone. I tend to find inspiration really easily in music, but it's also in just like the day-to-day; it's in other writers; it's in washing dishes; it's in a day trip to the ocean; it's in a quote or a touch or a word. Like genuinely, it's in big things and little things and things that shouldn't even be things. I don't feel like I really struggle with inspiration so much as motivation, really. And that is... a much harder thing to find sometimes (especially when you're mentally ill)
30. Do you like to read books similar to your project while you’re drafting or do you stick to non-fiction/un-similar works?
Um. I like to read fantasy mostly, but I don't look for something similar or different from my projects intentionally. I just.... look for things that I like? But I don't really know how to explain that lol
33. What’s your revision/rewriting process like? Since I'm writing mostly fanfiction and the culture of having a beta reader has dwindled significantly, making it hard to find one, I do a lot of self-editing. I'm usually re-reading a lot as I'm writing. So until a chapter is done, I'm always going back and reading/editing before moving on to the next scene. And then once I'm done writing a chapter I'll usually edit it about two or three times in full in the document, then I put it in draft on Ao3 for another edit before posting.
36. Post a snippet All right a snippet..... Let's go with something from: The Art of Love, Chapter 13 (not the next chapter, but the one after). Since I left everyone hanging for so long with that last scene of Gaara and Lee, this is the entire first scene to ch13: It was all his fault. If he hadn't let himself get so carried away in the dream of Gyokukakushin, in the dream of Gaara, in the dream of safety they didn't have this wouldn't be happening. Their belongings had been stuffed haphazardly into their various bags. Despite how many times he'd checked and double checked, Lee felt sure that he'd overlooked something—some wayward item that had rolled beneath the bed or fallen behind the desk that would give them away. Gaara had watched him silently, his thoughts kept to himself as Lee dashed about their room like a mad man.
“I think that is everything,” Lee managed over the mantra of 'My fault, my fault' cycling through his mind. His voice trembled as he spoke. Every inch of him trembled. Every breath he took rattled in his chest. Every beat of his heart was a stutter against his rib cage. Every ounce of blood pumping through his veins burned with the need to run.
“This is useless,” Gaara said, the first words he'd spoken since the beach.
Lee snapped his head up, meeting Gaara's enigmatic gaze. “But—”
“They don't set sail until the end of the month,” he reminded Lee. “What use is being packed? Besides, it will look suspicious if we leave now.”
Tears burned at the corners of Lee's eyes. “But if they are coming—”
“They're coming,” Gaara murmured. “But even if they arrive before we've departed, we have our disguises. You have to trust that we'll be fine.”
Lee's head spun. How could Gaara be so calm? How could he sit there, quiet and unshakable, when Lee felt as though the world were falling apart around them? How could he be so sure that eleven days from now, they'd set sail, free and undiscovered? How was he not furious with Lee for his complacency?
Gaara was at Lee's side before Lee could shake the spinning in his head, a gentle hand at Lee's elbow and a surety in his eyes.
“I know you won't let anything happen to me,” he told Lee, as soft and insistent as the thumb he'd once pressed against the corner of Lee's mouth.
“No. Never.” Lee's stomach twisted, guilt rising like the tide. He'd let his feelings jeopardize everything.
“Then what do you have to fear?”
A trembling laugh escaped Lee, soft and unsteady. He had everything to fear, yet Gaara's gaze implored him to forget those fears. He managed to speak, his tongue heavy with the lie, “I do not know.”
“Then do not know fear. It will make this harder for us, especially if the Daimyo's soldiers arrive before we've left.”
“If they do—”
“If they do, we will be as unknown to them as any other traveler. And if not, I trust your speed to carry us to safety.”
“We would miss our ship.”
“If it comes to that, so be it. We can find other ways of traveling to Tea Country.”
Lee allowed himself to believe all would be well because he couldn't believe anything else when looking into the depths of Gaara's eyes, but there was no escaping his gnawing guilt or the knowledge that his heart had led them to ruin.
39. Do you spend a lot of time analyzing and studying the work of authors you admire? I wouldn't say a lot of time per say, certainly not as much as I should, but I definitely do like to analyze other works and learn new skills, etc.
42. How many drafts do you usually write before you feel satisfied? I don't really write “drafts” per say. Since I'm just writing fanfiction, I'm usually just writing and then heavily editing. Sometimes editing does mean taking out and entirely rewriting entire scenes. And sometimes in writing fics, I do jump ahead—though very rarely—and write a rough draft of a future scene so I don't lose the idea/beats/etc, and then that will be re-written fully when I do get to it. But on average, I'm just doing a lot of editing.
45. First or third person? Third, definitely. I'll never be able to write first person cause it just doesn't really suit me and, overall, I think that it's a very hard point of view to write from. For me, it takes a special
48. Do you prefer to write skimpy drafts and flesh them out later, or write too much and cut it back? So before I write something, depending on what it is I will write an outline that can vary from a few sentences to like pages.
51. Are you a secretive writer or do you talk with your friends about your books? A bit of both really. I love talking about the things I'm working on, but I also love to keep things a surprise so I can see what people's genuine reactions are to like plot twists or whatever. Of course, my problem is that I have to like—talk about my projects to stay motivated. It's a hard balance. I usually end up talking with my roommate since they also write fanfic for Naruto but not GaaLee. We can bounce ideas off each other, when we're stuck, etc.
54. Favorite first line/opening you’ve written? Ugh this is another hard one... I think im gonna go with the opening from IEYH right now as one of my fave becuase I think I did a decent job of setting the tone of my very first horror project: Too often, ghost stories begin with dark nights or horrible, gruesome death. Real ghosts don't follow the patterns of a novel; there are no beginnings, middles, and ends; no rising action and falling action; no denouement. Ghosts do not achieve resolution; ghost do not experience the climax of their own tale. There are no happy—or even sad—endings. There are no endings at all.
Ghost stories go on and on and on, rambling endlessly towards nothing and no where, only stopping for the finite amount of words one can speak or write in one's lifetime.
That is the true horror of death: ceaseless, unending nothingness.

ang0mang0′s “copycat” claims
I didn’t want to have to make another post about this, but since people on sonicfan799 / thatAnge / @ang0mang0′s Tumblr profile are getting riled up about this ridiculous drama that should have died ages ago, I figured I’d defend myself. Some people who are trying to support me have been saying incorrect things too, so I also wanted to clear that up. This crap has been going on for months, everyone is sick of it by now. Instead of being brief like I did for other social medias, I’ll be as detailed as possible this time.
[1] “she’s copying/imitating/heavily referencing from my art style!!!”
Like people have said a million times, no I’m not. And nor is anyone else. Just because someone draws the Sonic characters in a similar style to you does not automatically mean they took, copied or “stole” those ideas from you. You don’t own the concept of buff, fluffy bodies or chubby muzzles. COINCIDENCE, as much as you hopelessly deny it, is very much a possible thing- even in crazy situations such as this. There are several other artists who have similar art styles by mere coincidence. IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. As examples, these Instagram artists have similar styles: @ azulytoons and @ indigonite0 / @ magenta_mel and @ zer0finix / @ himemikal and @ natirix. NONE of these artists are “stealing” or referencing from each other- they just have similar art styles, and that is perfectly okay! They draw completely different things with completely different mindsets. The world does not revolve around you, ang0. Not everyone knows who you are, so some people who use the same traits that we do don’t even know we exist.
Also, to anyone unaware, an art STYLE is not merely how one chooses to portray a character. An art STYLE is also what brushes you use, how you sketch, how you line, how you colour, how you shade, how you choose to portray certain objects or ideas- basically your entire fucking understanding of how something’s supposed to look and how you LIKE it to look. It’s not just “chubby faces, poofy curly hair, buff bodies”. It’s everything in a piece AND that.
[2] “she’s tracing my art/ redrawing my ideas!”
Literally no. People have constantly asked you to provide evidence and you refused to. All you did was scream “but it’s so obvious, just look at it!” or “are you dumb? use your eyes!” and several other insults. If you want to prove a point or make someone see something, GIVE. EVIDENCE. The only person who actually provided “proof” was pin_kpeach, your ever so loyal whiteknight, but her “proof” only backfired and proved that the both of you are extremely delusional. In the drawings of ours that she layered over each other, next to NONE of the lines lined up. It looked like a clustered mess of scrap, and the reason for that is because IT WASN’T TRACED. In the one or two drawings where ONE. SINGLE. PIECE. actually lined up was entirely zoomed in to make it seem as though the whole thing was traced. No, honey, that’s not how you provide proof. That’s how you pull a muscle by reaching so desperately to lie about me. The rest of the drawings in those pictures didn’t line up at all, and one- or I believe both- needed to be titled to line them up in the first place. You could say that some people trace things and resize or rotate them, but if I were as dumb as you persist to say, then I wouldn’t have done something like that. Either way, one aspect of a drawing lining up is a common thing for people who have similar styles because- well, I just said it. THEY HAVE SIMILAR STYLES. If they draw something the same way, well fucking duh, it’ll match someone else’s drawing almost exactly sometimes.
[3] “she’s too petty and too much of a liar to credit me! saying the art isn’t hers will hurt her oversized ego!”
Ahaha no. The only one here with an inflated ego is you, ang0. You call me the egotistical one yet you act as though your life is falling apart just because someone else draws like you on the internet. Stop acting like a special snowflake, you are not the only one on this planet with an art style of that nature. I don’t credit you because crediting you makes no damn sense. Why should I credit someone who’s had absolutely no impact on my work whatsoever? What in the hell did you do for my drawings that makes you deserve so much credit? Did you sketch it? No. Did you line it? Nope. Did you colour or shade it? Not a chance. Just because I came up with a design for the characters that happens to look like yours does not mean I owe you jack shit. You cannot. own. a style. Get over it.
[4] “she worsened my depression and is the reason I can’t draw anymore! I have no motivation when there’s some idiot copycat stealing all my art!”
I don’t want to sound like that kind of person, but you worsened your own depression. You painted this false picture in your head and continue to hang onto that belief like your life depends on it. I haven’t done ANYthing to you. You came to ME with these stupid claims back when my art looked LESS like yours, before I even knew who you were. You’re making yourself feel horrible because you, for some paranormal reason, refuse to believe that you’re not the only one with that kind of style. This is why people call you childish, you’re like a whiny baby that can’t accept another child having a toy similar to yours. I can’t even decide whether I should say “grow up” because you’re older than me- not to mention you’re an ADULT.
[5]”she constantly sends her whiteknights to attack me, harass me and send me threatening messages!”
I’ve said several times to my followers NOT to harass you or your followers or anyone against me in this mess at all. I do not send anyone after you. People say things to you out of their own free will and with their own words. I can’t magically know when this happens, why they decide to and I especially can’t control anyone. I’m sorry that my friend Koro sent you all those DMs and horrible messages wishing a lot of very bad things onto you and your family- I asked her several times before and after not to do that, but I didn’t have a clue she did it until after the fact. Either way, don’t go around assuming that I put people up to this or I intentionally ask people to do these things to you. Why in the hell would I do that? What good does that do? All I wanted to do was talk things out but at this point, you don’t even take me seriously, so I can’t even try anymore. The few times we did talk you refuse to see my point of view and just see me as a liar. What the hell am I supposed to do then?
[6]”all vio does is lie, she’s so fake all the time, lying for her petty ego”
I’m not even sure how to respond to this but I thought I might as well bring it up. No matter what I do or say, ang0 sees me as nothing but some retarded liar that can’t help but lie their way around everything, even though I’ve been nothing but genuine all this time. It’s why I can’t even communicate with her anymore, because “shut up, stop lying you copycat” is all I get in response basically.
[7] her insane hypocrisy
Ange and pin_kpeach have said numerous times that I’m rude or insult her, and there have been times where I’ve been mean out of anger, but I know for a fact I apologized for it in DMs. Ange apologized too. I don’t remember ever insulting her after that, but ang0 doesn’t ever stop ridiculing and insulting me with almost every comment she makes on the drama. If she really was sorry, she wouldn’t have done it again, but I guess she said “fuck it” and just continued anyway. Pin_kpeach likes to say I’M the hypocrite for saying Ange is harassing me yet being rude to her a couple times, yet they do they exact same thing, but even worse?? I try my best to be as civil as possible, but ang0 and pink don’t waste a second calling me and my supporters all sorts of colourful names just because they don’t agree with her claims. In fact, here’s a list of every single thing ang0’s ever called me:
retarded, retard, stupid, idiot, dumb, low IQ, mentally ill, crazy, talentless, skill-less, copycat, art thief, (dumb) cow, fuckhole, asshole, bitch, wanna-be artist, unreasonable, clown, fake, liar, hypocrite, delusional, dick, stalker, bittershitter, dumbass, immature
There’s probably more than that, but that’s as much as I can remember. Not hard to forget when she repeats them almost all the time.
[8] gatekeeping ideas
Ange and pink act as if two people drawing a character in the same outfit automatically equals “du bist kopying mein style!!”. I can’t even begin to imagine the mental gymnastics you need to do in order to believe a thought process like that is logical. She thinks that anyone who draws Amy in a dress with a white under-skirt or white ruffles underneath is nothing but a copied idea from her. She thinks that me drawing Amy in a green tank top, blue backwards cap and blue sports shorts is copying her drawing of Amy in a green unidentifiable top (you could only see her back, she didn’t seem to have straps) and blue sports shorts with a slightly different design is automatically copied from her. The poses, shading, angle and idea behind the drawing were COMPLETELY different- but nonono, “this is stolen because the outfit is the same!” They also use the excuse of the whole chubby faces, curly hair, blah blah blah- see point [1] as to why that’s BS.
[9] her perception of my followers/supporters
Aside from Koro, I don’t know if anyone has seriously threatened or harassed her. Her followers comment on my posts, my followers only comment when she brings up the drama or whines about it. She insults my supporters when they don’t agree with her and act like they’re a bunch of immature brats who are wrong while she’s the high and mighty mature one seeing through non-existent lies. I’m used to her making fun of me, but I’m sick and tired of her insulting people who have nothing to do with the drama just because they don’t agree with her. Like, seriously? You call everyone immature and stupid yet you’re the one insulting people non-stop just because they realize how ridiculous and childish you’re acting. That’s why “childish” has become a popular adjective for you, ang0. BECAUSE YOU’RE BEING CHILDISH. CONSTANTLY. You get pissy, insult others and put people down but whine and cry the next minute because you constantly like to play the victim. Speaking of which...
[10] the victim card
I have absolutely no idea what ang0 goes through in real life, but there is no excuse for how she’s behaved during this drama AT ALL. Ange constantly defames her own artwork, calling it shit, calling it every bad name in the book, but doesn’t hesitate for a minute to gatekeep her style as if it was the best thing in the world. She says it’s because she “worked her ass off” and doesn’t want people just stealing her hard work. Okay, but you do realize that other people put just as much work into their own art, no matter if it looks like yours or not, right? She demands that people change their style to stop looking like hers, acting as if that can be done in a matter of minutes, because people having similar styles makes her uncomfortable. Well, surprise motherfucker- welcome to the internet. No one is original and everyone is original at the same time. People are bound to come up with similar ideas and you’re just going to have to deal with it. But despite the similarities, people are still original in their own right. If you believe that people can change a style so easily, why not just change your OWN style? Because you worked your ass off? Well, THEY WORKED THEIR ASS OFF TOO. So don’t act like you’re the only one who’s put effort into their craft. Art is hard, and that applies to EVERYONE- even professionals.
You blame me and other “copycats” for all your problems, blaming us for worsening your depression, ruining your passion for art- when you’re the only one who does this to yourself. Yes, there have been genuine art thieves in your life, and people who have stolen your art- but what I’m talking about are the people like me who DON’T steal your art or are merely inspired by you. People who say “you should be happy they’re inspired!” aren’t saying “you should be happy they’re copying!”. They’re saying that you should be glad that your work is so inspiring that people create their own unique ideas based off your own. Inspiration doesn’t require credit unless they’re purposefully taking a massive part of the original. But being inspired by a hair style or even a pose isn’t stealing. It’s inspiration, that’s it. I’m not inspired by you at all, but I can at least appreciate your art- even if you think I’m just being fake.
[11] ang0mang0′s history and why this shit doesn’t even make sense
Ange has said publicly and to me in detail about how she’s been accused of the same “art style theft” in the past. From what I’ve gathered or heard, people used to accuse her of copying a popular artist called myly14 who’s Sonic art is pretty much everywhere. Whether it be in edits, MVs or whatever else. Looking at her old art when she went under the name sonicfan799, her art does look similar to myly’s, but ang0 insisted that she didn’t copy myly and didn’t even know who she was. She legit said “it’s not my fault my art looks like someone else’s”, so basically- it was coincidence. She said she changed her art style because she “isn’t an asshole and didn’t want to make the other artist uncomfortable”, even though art style theft isn’t a thing and no one needs to be forced out of a style just because someone else already draws that way. I have no idea what myly’s stance on that situation was, but the fact that it happened just proves how stupid her current claims are.
Ange says that her style is “too complex” to be coincidentally similar to someone else’s, even though the fact that it’s happened 30 times (according to her) just proves that no, ang0, no it fucking isn’t. Your style isn’t complicated at all. Detailed sure, but no style is too complicated to be similar to another’s. Being complex doesn’t make something any less likely to be identical to another complex style. If you didn’t copy myly14 in the past, what right do you have to accuse me of the same damn thing? If I really am copying you, then you have to admit to copying myly, because you can’t just lie about your past and then shit on me for doing the same thing. So it’s either you stop this nonsense or you drag this drama down with you to your grave and admit you copied myly14.
Another thing, myly14 didn’t even have a “simple” style. The fact that her art was almost instantly recognizable and popular meant that she had a signature style that stood out. Yes, she used a lot of the original Sonic style’s anatomy, but her stylization of said anatomy, her shading and the way she composed her pieces gave her a signature style. The most stylized thing I could see was how she drew muzzles, and guess who drew muzzles in a similar way as well? You did. People saw how your way of drawing faces and some parts of the body and thought it looked liked myly’s. The similarities in your anatomy, and not your shading or colouring, was what made people think you copied her. That exact same thing is happening between me and you. My shading, colouring and composition is entirely different from yours, but some parts of the anatomy are similar.
If you really didn’t copy myly14, you have absolutely no. fucking. excuse. to accuse me of the EXACT. SAME. SHIT. that happened to you.
You never needed or deserved to be pressured out of your old style just because people thought it looked similar to someone else’s, and that’s why I refuse to change my style now. Because it isn’t. fucking. fair. To ANYONE.
[12] how I feel (this is copied over from my DeviantART)
At this point I've grown used to what she has to say, but it still hurts. She thinks that I'm some kind of cartoon villain maniacally laughing behind a computer screen every time I post something because she's so deep into her belief that I really copy everything she draws and that nothing I've never posted has any true effort put into it. She genuinely believes she owns all my art and that I devote my entire gallery into recreating her image or some crazy shit like that. It sounds really dumb, but from what I've read from her poorly constructed comments and rants, that's basically what she believes.
She thinks I don't care at all about how all this affects her or anyone at all, but I do. It doesn't just hurt me in the sense that she makes me feel awful with all her insults, but I just feel so bad for her. I feel guilty in the sense that I couldn't do anything at all to help her, not that "shes prolly feeling guilty and made that april fools joke to let out some guilt!!". (If you don’t know, on April Fools Day, I changed my Instagram bio to say “clown” and call myself “the ultimate copycat” as a joke.) That was a really stupid reaction from her by the way... who the hell comes up with that? Now that she's going away for a month, I feel even worse because all I wanted to do was try to make her come to her senses and end this mess. I thought I could talk some sense into her- that didn't work. Her delusions are so strong, she's like a brick wall. I thought I could ignore the drama- that didn't work. She "clowns" and talks about it so annoyingly often. Not to mention people do things on their own to stir shit up. I thought I could support her regardless and maybe try making her feel better about her art- that didn't work. She thinks I'm fake and that everything I say is a lie. Because of me, she probably doesn't believe other people too- and that makes me feel even more terrible.
No matter what I do, I'm automatically the villain and she's the tortured, helpless artist that everyone is against because "everyone is dumb, supporting a copycat" and she's just "used to it, because she's dealt with so much shit already!". It's so ridiculous. If she would just try to actually better herself or the situation, she wouldn't feel so horrible all the time. Like... for god's sake, she relied on a video game to make her happy- that's not healthy, and just like I suspected, it didn't fucking work.
more of how I feel
Because of ang0, I just feel like garbage. My self esteem and confidence in my art was already low. Thanks to her, I don’t feel original (or as original) anymore- and I’m afraid to show many of my new or old ideas because she or her whiteknight pin_kpeach may spring out and say “copycat! stolen! you’re not original!” and a plethora of other insults. I can barely sketch or draw Sonic content without panicking and feeling worthless because all I have is her words and her opinions stuck in my head. She blames me for her demotivation and shit like that when she’s done the same thing to me. She thinks I don’t care about her or her art, when I do, but when I say that, she calls me fake. In reality, ang0 couldn’t give a damn about me and I’m pretty sure she’d be happy if I were dead. She has said before that she doesn’t care if I killed myself soo... there’s that. Anyway lemme not drag my feelings out too long, I just thought I’d say it to anyone willing to listen since her immediate response would’ve been “fake, liar” etc, etc. I really don’t want anyone to feel bad for me or anything like that, I just want people to listen and understand. That’s all.
a final note
I’m really thankful- like, REALLY thankful- for everyone who’s been on my side throughout this. I don’t like picking sides, and I’d hate to make people do so, but there doesn’t seem to be any in between to this at all. It’s either you believe I’m copying her or you don’t. Most people don’t- thank goodness for that- but some do. And there’s nothing I can do about it. At this point, whatever man.
Please please PLEASE do not harass ang0. Don’t threaten her, don’t insult her, don’t do anything rash or fucking illegal. It’s all fair game if you want to POLITELY SPEAK to her, or try to start a discussion, but please don’t do anything stupid. And especially don’t do things in my name. If you want to debate with me or her, do research first- don’t just jump to conclusions or make assumptions. If you want nothing to do with this drama, then simply don’t say anything- just be aware of what’s going on, that’s all I ask. So nobody gets the wrong idea on either side.
Sorry for this being so long, I think I’m done for now.
Thank you if you read the whole thing.

I was inspired by reading @fenriael wonderful questionnaire about Arellius so I thought I'd do one about my boy! Hope you enjoy!
Ondolerinde my ex-military leader turned Clockwork Apostle. Married to Sotha Sil and maker of their cyborg-esque son Othalos Sothal.
∆ Layer One- The Outside
Eye Color- Honey, a deep brown in low lighting or a beautiful golden yellow in direct light, shining almost as bright as his personality.
Hair Color & Style- A cross between champagne and golden. Always cropped short, a habitual cut that stemmed from his time in the military. Any hair that comes past his ears is distressing to him.
Height- 6' 9", 2.0574m.
Clothing Style- Ondolerinde prefers clothing that is loose and comfortable. His occupation as an inventor, tinkerer and engineer has him sitting or standing for long periods of time so its imperative that his clothing isn't heavy or obstructive for optimal work output. His main Apostle uniform can almost be mistaken for pajamas with the soft and lightweight fabric its made out of, coming in a two piece suit or a robe.
The color palette never diverts from the gold, bronze, taupe, pink and creams all around the Clockwork City. Sometimes its almost camouflage and he's easily missed as his appearance mixes in with the background. On the other hand there are times he wears his gold armor and he glimmers like an artificial sun, usually when leaving the Brass Fortress and going out into the countryside.
He's never seen without his utility belt and the army of knick-knacks that come with it.
Best Physical Feature- Many would agree his jaw is his best future, oddly enough. Many of the younger or newer Apostles gawk at the chiseled structure when he's too focused on his projects and when they're alone, Sotha Sil is more than likely rubbing it with his thumb.
∆Layer Two-
Fears:
Very Real Fears- Ondolerinde has a crippling fear of bugs, natural or made. Any creepy critter that skuttles past the Altmer will wreck havoc, have things thrown at them and be subjected to his shrill, girly screams.
That's partially why the Skeevaton is his favorite animal as it hunts down the pesky insects.
Abstract Fears- In essence, he is afraid of failure and disappointing others.
Failures as insignificant as not getting enough to eat or leaving an article of clothing behind in his rush to get dressed to the fundamental avenues in his work. An automaton spontaneously combusting mid experiment, loosing a wrench while repairing, misgiving advice to another Apostle and their work subsequently coming up short. It's often crippling. Leaving Ondolerinde a hyperventilating mess of nerves and worrying warts.
The second fear comes with the territory of failing. Disappointing Sotha Sil is at the crux of his obsession of perfection. The Clockwork God appears to be impartial to all the work done by the cities inhabitants but no one else can sense the heart-wrenching gaze on the failure. Everything has to be perfect, every gear and every circuit.
Guilty Pleasure- Throwing out Nutrient Paste by the vat full, making flower crowns for the Council of Calibration, and spoiling his son rotten.
Biggest Pet Peeve- A messy workplace. The Apostles, both new and experienced, know to keep their desks and stations organized. Ondolerinde does his rounds throughout the Basilica and Hall of Refined Techniques every night, never intentionally searching for objects strewn about but when he does...oh-ho, he goes on a manhunt for whoever left their tools out. Giving the Disciple a well-meaning but stern lecture.
Ambitions for the Future- Migrating the technological advancements into Nirn, hoping the futuristic applied sciences will give Nirn more semblances of peace and prosperity. That and maybe giving Othalos a sibling.
∆Layer Three-
Thoughts:
First Thought Waking Up- Wondering what had woken him up, as he's a deep sleeper.
What They Think About Most- Sotha Sil and Othalos Sothal, his family, his work, what his next project will be and existential crisis if he should fail at anything.
What They Think About Before Bed- Recollecting the days events and his family yet again. He always wants Sotha Sil and Othalos to be the last thing he thinks about before he succumbs to sleep so his dreams will be filled with them. He's a sap like that.
What They Think Their Best Quality Is- His open-mindedness, being raised in a very traditional Altmer home he was raised with certain expectations, everything about him was supposed to be a certain way. From his appearance to his skills and every aspect of his life. He was born to conquer, bred to sire the ultimate leader and do nothing else but think of the future of his people.
As he got older Ondolerinde strayed away, accepting more personal freedom for himself and others. Now he can't think of forcing his views and opinions on others without getting sick, allowing people to be who they are...as long as they aren't harming others.
∆Layer Four-
Either Or:
Single or Group Dates- Single, its hard enough to get Sotha to relent to a date in the first place but planning a rendezvous that consists of multiple is harder than trying not to get barbed by a Venomous Fabricant right out of the incubation tank.
To Be Loved or Respected- To be loved.
Beauty or Brains- Brains. It's what drew him to Sotha Sil in the first place.
Dogs or Cats- Dogs definitely! He's in the process of building a canis fabricant as a companion for himself and Othalos, a little something to brighten up their day and teach Othalos some responsibility.
∆Layer Five-
Do they:
Lie- Occasional white lies, if he thinks it'll spare a person's feelings from the truth.
Believe In Themselves- Wholeheartedly? Oh no. Partially? Maybe occasionally.
Believe In Someone- Yes, multiple someones.
Want Someone- Probably not, he has who he needs.
∆Layer Six-
Have They:
Been on Stage- No unless teaching at a podium counts.
Done Drugs- No, but he thought he did the first night at the Clockwork City. A handful of Apostles thought it would be funny to haze the "new-guy" so he snorted Nutrient Paste in belief it was a common, enhancing drug.
Changed Who They Were to Fit In- Before, yes. Ondolerinde as a child, teenager and young adult did everything in his power to fit in with whatever crowd that were pliable enough to accept him.
∆Layer Seven-
Their Favorite:
Color- Moth Purple.
Animal- Skeevaton.
Book- A Tale of Kieran.
Game- The Dwemer Puzzle Box.
Layer Eight-
Age:
When is their birthday- 30th of Rain's Hand.
How old will they be- As of 2E 583 he'll be 51.
∆Layer Nine-
I...
Love- My husband and son.
Feel- Uncertain, wary yet...excited.
Hide- The overwhelming, crushing weight of being married to a God, keeping the Clockwork City from imploding in on itself while being a father.
Miss- Authentic sunshine.
Wish- That my son will grow up happy and find his own path.

Drunj!Der Yells About Outlander
Thoughts on Ep. 505
ADSOOO!!! AND CLAIRE!!! AND ADSOOOOO!!!
My floofer was not amused when I woke her up to show her the cat on the teevee. Bqhatevwr, boo boo, you’re stuck with me. #TeamSocialDistancing
Oh, I guess the voice overs are back in a big way. Super...
And also like, this whole running bit about God and stuff would work so much better if they’d included Jamie and Claire’s faith a bit more throughout the show. *cough Jamie’s prayer cough*
Do we have to pour one out for science!jizz? This is the book bit where the science!jizz happened, but maybe they’ll do it later? Probs not. Le sigh.
Marsali being all excited with Claire and Claire being all fuck yeah I found it gives me the warm fuzzies. I LOVE THE TWO OF THEM A LOT OK.
This montage makes me dizzy. Not a fan, tbh.
Oh hey, the old Hancock building! With a park that looks nothing like Boston, haha. But I appreciate the effort lol, my main office is like a block from the old Hancock building. Not that I’ll be seeing it any time soon. Living that work from home life until the plague times are over.
But for real, social distance. No joke. Stay the fuck home.
I love 60s Claire if only because damn girl, look at dem legsss.
Hi, I’m Der and I’m very shallow sometimes.
But Claire has objectively great legs.
Omfg, Roger, stop being a butthurt whiner. You suck at being a soldier. You know you suck at being a soldier. And instead of being like yeah, let me learn and get better, you just bitch about it.
Sam is gonna kick his horse in the head at some point. Why the fuck does he dismount like that. It’s literally bugged me since season one.
So they’re pardoning everyone. Probs not Murtz though. Cool that instead of doing a continuous ramp up to the inevitable confrontation, they’re going the book route of lol, jk, all this was kind of a waste of time for now...
Really, Knox, you did something excessive? Cool way to say murdered a dude.
Ok well if Knox is getting the Ardsmuir roll, then he’s def gonna die, right?
Jamie’s 100% gonna intentionally miss Murtz’s face.
Boom, called it.
I do not like spiders. Please move this VO along, Claire.
I’m fucking glad we finally get Doctor!Claire. We should have gotten more Doctor!Claire in season three. Jamie got to have all aspects of his 20 years examined but fucking Claire’s side was literally just about Fred and how shitty he is.
Fuck you, season three. Fuck yeah, Doctor!Claire!
“It’s my married name.” Lulz. And not the married name she wants...
GRAHAM SAYS THE THING JAMIE SAID WHEN CLAIRE WAS STITCHING HIM UP IN SEASON ONE AND I HAVE FEELINGS ABOUT IT OK.
Graham makes me miss when the show was in Scotland like whoa. I miss the Squad. There are so many characters now that are like kind of always around but they’re not part of the Squad. And the main Squad is always separated. So like there’s barely any big group adventures anymore where we actually give a shit about everyone involved.
I JUST WANT THE FOLKS I CARE ABOUT TO HANG OUT MORE, OK!
Needle!jizz 2.0 is gonna be the closest we get to science!jizz, isn’t it. Whomps.
Can the show please just be a period procedural with Claire and Marsali being badass doctors? Thx.
Because for real though, Marsali being like “scalpel” is my favorite thing ever.
I feel you, Jemmy, I’d cry if I were stuck hanging out with Roger too.
I DO NOT LIKE SPIDERS, CLAIRE.
“My lass is more concerned wi’ words and deeds.” Which is why it baffles me that she’s still with you, bro, because your words and deeds fucking suck.
How Bonnet doesn’t accidentally swallow the diamond is beyond me.
Ok so if your wife was violently raped and you know she’s had some PTSD about it, because you’ve seen the drawings and stuff, you should maybe act completely the opposite way from how Roger is acting.
“And you kept it? A gift...from Bonnet.” Yes, you giant fuckwit, your traumatized wife went to hang with her rapist for shits and giggles and accepted a present because she really wants a memento to remember him by. They’re on such good terms and all. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! HOW IS HE SUCH A DOUCHECANOE?!
You do not get to judge or question how someone processes their trauma you raging asshat.
He is such a fucking Fred.
Do I think what Bree did was smart? Or a good decision? Hard no. But it’s what she thought she needed to do to move forward with her life. And so she can do whatever the fuck she wants. Yeah, words have consequences and it was a stupid move, but Roger needs to step all the fucking way off.
“You’ve never said as much to me.” “I didn’t think I needed to.” I HATE ROGER SO MUCH. I HATE HIM WITH THE PASSION OF A THOUSAND FIERY SUNS. HOW DO THE WRITERS NOT REALIZE THAT THEY’RE MAKING THE CHARACTER WHO’S SUPPOSED TO BE THE SECOND ROMANTIC MALE LEAD AN IRREDEEMABLE PIECE OF SHIT. OH WAIT BECAUSE THEY HAVE LOTS OF PRACTICE FROM FRED 1.0 THAT FRED 2.0 IS JUST A NATURAL PROGRESSION.
Lol at this “Boston” priest sounding vaguely southern. Is he one of the pedos the archdioceses just kept shuffling around?
(I’m not a fan of organized religion and being forced to grow up Catholic sucked a lot for me. I did some therapy about it.)
Ok so is Claire’s knife on her belt the hand job antler knife? I mean, Jamie doesn’t give it to her until Echo, but I’m gonna pretend like it’s the hand job antler knife. Also, some witches use a white handled knife called a boline to cut herbs and stuff so it’s fitting that Claire constantly-being-witchy-to-her-own-detriment Beauchamp has a white handled knife for collecting herbs.
“Yeah, Frank and I... no, we had a very complicated marriage.” Well that’s one way to put it. *keeps rage bottled up on the inside*
“Frank and I, we still managed to make it work, for Bree’s sake.” Except it didn’t fucking work. He was terrible to you. You basically put up with 20 years of emotional abuse for the sake of your kid and then he used her as a weapon against you. Because he is garbage. Much like Roger.
Claire is always the bigger person. She was with Fred and now with Roger. Like, I’m still pissed that she never got to let out her side of things. She just keeps framing it through rose colored glasses, never speaking ill of Fred when he didn’t do that for her.
WE DO NOT DESERVE CLAIRE BEAUCHAMP AND NEITHER DO MOST OF THE MEN ON THIS SHOW.
Fergus deserves milady.
They’re really going hard with the Roger, Bree and Jemmy have to go back stuff. Are they gonna bump them going back up to the season finale this year? They bring it up basically every fucking episode. I’d be down with moving that along tbh. Except then we’d have to have just the two of them as their own story line and I hate that part from the books.
“We are but humble servants to the law.” Really, Javert Knox. Would you say your duty’s to the law?
“Those who follow the path of the righteous shall have their reward.” Yes, bible and shit, but also a veRY FAMOUS LINE FROM A VERY FAMOUS SONG FROM A VERY FAMOUS MUSICAL.
“Scotland, eh? I never stopped missing it.” HARD SAME, GRAHAM. HARD SAME.
Pledged their oaths to the militia. Not the governor. Miiiinor detail, haha.
“It is a relief, to finally put down the sword and pistol and pick up the axe and shovel.” So, Jamie, you’re saying you’re gonna walk behind the plough-share, you will put away the sword?
Oh hey, it’s Joe! Another person we should have spent more time with in season three.
“Something about Graham Menzies...” Maybe the fact that he could easily have been part of the OG Squad?
I MISS THE OG SQUAD.
“Principally that men like Fitzgibbons never change.” Really, Knox, men like [him] can never change? A man, such as [him]?
“OUR DUTY IS TO THE LAW. WE WILL SEE JUSTICE DONE.” OK BUT THEY’RE LIKE LITERALLY TRYING TO SHOEHORN IN ALL THE LES MIS LYRICS THEY CAN LIKE THE TIME I DID THAT WITH I’M ON A BOAT IN THAT ONE RECAP...
“What kind of deceitful devil wears the guise of honor and talks of justice and mercy?” Valjean Fraser, at last we see each other plain...
“Believe of me what you will,” there’s a duty that he’s sworn to do. Protect his Murtz.
“As god is my witness, I will do what must be done.” You never shall yield? ‘Til you come face to face?
“Damned if I’ll be in league with a traitor.” Would you rather live in the debt of a thief?
“But I will not stand by and watch my kin hunted like a dog.” Like a dog on the run, Jamie?
Called it! Broski needed to die. You’re not gonna make sure the letters are burned all the way, Jamie? Like didn’t that dude who brought in the letters see you there? This seems like it’s gonna backfire *rull* quick.
Also, speaking of dead bodies, is Rando McWhatshisface still in the basement?
Is Adso Gavroche in this scenario?
Jamie Fraser, murder to kitten snuggles in 0.3 seconds.
IF YOU HURT ONE HAIR ON MY LITTLE BEBE’S HEAD, I WILL END YOU, JAMIE.
Slash finally, I thought this episode was turning into Waiting for Gadsot...
(I made myself chuckle a little too hard at that one, tbh.)
“I found him in an alley, couldn’t leave him behind.” AKA how Jamie Fraser adopts all of his children, haha.
“How would you feel about taking a trip to London with me? Your father wanted to bring you there before he died.” You mean, when he threatened to steal your kid from you? It fucking speaks so highly of Claire that she won’t ruin Bree’s impression of Fred. Even though Bree knows by now that he was a terrible person.
“Thank you for my gift.” YOUR GIFT LOVES YOU TOO, CLAIRE!
(And I’m still a sucker for the Claire calling Jamie “soldier” bit.)

Aang is an amazing character
I should preface this by saying I was 7 going on 8 when the show first aired and I watched from the beginning. Also, Aang was my first TV crush at the time and that lasted pretty much the entire show. Now that I gave got that out of the way, I want to talk about why I feel Aang is an amazing character and why he is my favourite from the show.
I want to start this off by talking about how refreshing Aang as a character was to me when I was an 8 year old watching the show for the first time. Here was a male protagonist who was a pacifist, who was silly and goofy and had a big heart. He was flawed but never malicious or intentionally mean. I feel like that was something different for the time and even still today, those are not the characteristics we see every day in male characters on TV. Especially boys. I was used to seeing boys more like Zuko and Sokka, and while Zuko and Sokka are amazing characters in their own right, they are also very different from Aang. As a now 23 year old I appreciate Aang for his nature even more. His more gentle, loving nature is something I think shows that it’s okay if boys aren’t as rough and are more in touch with their feelings. I feel like it shows that being pacifist isn’t a sign of weakness, but can be a sign of strength in it’s own way.
Which brings me to how much Aang grew over time and the flaws he showed in the show. I know Aang gets a lot of hate from people for being weak, for not showing any character growth, for holding onto his love for Katara, for refusing to kill Ozai and many other things. To say Aang doesn’t grow feels wrong to me (it may not to you and that’s fine) but when I think of the little boy we first met in The Boy in the Iceberg, I think of a little boy who didn’t want to be the Avatar, who ran away from it because the people he knew and loved were treating him differently and all he wanted was to be a normal kid. I think of a boy who wanted to go penguin sledding and hid who he was. We see him go from that kid, to a kid who carried so much guilt around with him because he left. Almost everyone he knew was gone. And in his mind they were gone because he ran away, because he was a scared kid who didn’t want the responsibility of being the Avatar. Not only did he lose friends because of this, but he lost the only parental figure he ever had, Gyatso, and when he found his body in the temple, he got lost in his grief. We saw a different boy then. He wasn’t the goofy, silly, happy kid he was in the first two episodes. We saw him react to the realisation that his people were gone and that fact finally sunk in when he saw Gyatso’s body with all the grief and anger any normal person, but especially a kid of that age, would react with. We saw him come down from that a bit, but the grief and guilt never left.
We saw more of his grief and the guilt he felt in the storm, where he shares his reasons for leaving with Katara. We see some flashbacks of him as a child growing up in the Air Temple. We find out he had mastered airbending by the age of 12. We saw him show off and start to teach the other kids some of the tricks he knew (airscooter). And when those same kids rejected him, he wasn’t mad, he didn’t fight them, he walked away feeling sad and left out, and wishing he could be normal like them. He never showed any anger towards them for saying he couldn’t play anymore. What he did show was he saw being Avatar as the reason he couldn’t be normal and that was why he didn’t want to be. We learned he only ran away when he thought even Gyatso wouldn’t be able to keep him there.
Which leads me to point out that Aang was 12 when he learned he was The Avatar. 12. From watching the show we are led to believe Avatar’s aren’t told about their status until they’re 16. So at the time Aang was the youngest known Avatar. He was the youngest who was going to be sent to start his training. And he did what I think a lot of kids would do if their whole worlds were turned upside down overnight. He ran away from it.
Despite everything he had been through, his childish nature didn’t leave him. He was still playful. He still made mistakes. Like hiding the whereabouts of Katara and Sokka’s father from them and when the truth came out and they were angry and left him behind (understandable), he didn’t run away and hide out of shame. He went back to protect them. He faced up to what he had done. And when he got so excitable and eager to learn firebending, and hurt Katara in the process, he was ashamed of what he had done, he was remorseful and he swore off firebending for life. This is almost exactly what a kid would say if they had the power. It’s what he said. But later down the road he realised he needed to learn and he learned from his mistake. He learned to be more patient.
When it comes to Katara, yes, Aang was wrong to kiss her without consent. Yes, I do wish the show had gone into that more. I wish he had apologised for that and they had been able to discuss it. But Aang didn’t do it again and he felt bad afterwards. I think in general this whole thing should have been handled better by the show and could have lead to a good dialogue on consent and learning how to deal with these feelings but that’s getting off the topic.
Through the course of the show we have seen Aang become angry a few times. The most memorable time, for me, is when Appa is stolen and they confront the sandbenders. Aang showed real rage with them because they had stolen the character who had been with Aang from his time with the airbenders to now. They stole one of the last pieces of his past he still had. They stole his buddy who had been with him through everything. Aang could have lashed out worse than he did but he was pulled back, he was calmed down. The anger doesn’t go away after that episode and we see him lash out a few more times, mostly when it comes to him feeling like the others don’t care as much about finding Appa.
But we also see it near the end of the show. When everyone is telling him he needs to kill Ozai. Aang gets angry because he feels pressured to do something against his very nature and when they claim they are trying to help, he doesn’t feel like they are, because he fundamentally doesn’t feel heard or understood. His anger doesn’t last very long but it leads into another aspect of his character that is often overlooked. And that is how his customs and way are life are not understood by those around him.
As an Air Nomad he was taught that all life is sacred, he was brought up to believe every life is worth something, he was taught an openness that other natures do not understand (embracing and normalising same sex attraction, etc). It may not be a huge deal to everyone, but for him it is. Often he tries to keep his customs alive, keep the culture alive, and he’s told he can’t, because he’s the Avatar, because that’s not how the world works. But it’s how his world work. It’s how he works. Fundamentally, these are the values he holds. That doesn’t mean he is judgmental. I mean, he never judges anyone for eating meat though he’s a vegetarian. All he does is point it out so he can get food that works for him, or so he doesn’t offend when he doesn’t eat everything. He never tries to shove it down their throats. When Katara and Zuko wanted to get revenge for Katara’s moms murder, Aang did confront them for trying to take Appa, yes he tried to talk her out of it, but he didn’t berate her or say anything malicious or manipulative. He was trying to look out for his friend. He was trying to stop her from going down the dark path. People might say he wouldn’t understand. But remember, Aang suffered horrific losses too. He suffered so much loss that a lot of people would not be able to recover from. Their losses may not be the same, but it doesn’t make his less than hers or any other characters.
Through all this we can see that he is a good person, a kind, loving person. He is very real with his flaws. He’s real in terms of his struggles. Sure, he can get over some of them easily, but I think with some time at the core he is adaptable.
And when it comes to the final battle with Ozai and being faced with the decision of what to do, he found a way that worked for him. He found a way that allowed him to do his job as Avatar while also keeping true to his nature and way of life from before. It meant he could keep it alive for the future generations. It fitted his character so perfectly. Did energy bending come out of nowhere? Sure, I won’t say it didn’t. Personally, it doesn’t bug me, but i can see it does others. But if you can look past that, it was a perfect way to end the show. Not because it looked cool or added a new element to the show.
It’s because it drove home the message that violence doesn’t always have to be met with more violence and that being pacifist doesn’t always equal being weak. It also stayed true to the character of Aang. It showed his growth. Because Aang stood by his wife of life and showed that growth doesn’t always have to mean change. It can mean becoming more adaptable, learning more about the world, becoming more sure of yourself as a person and finding a balance to the two roles/jobs/aspects of yourself. He found balance between being Aang the Airbender and Aang the Avatar. He found a way for them to work together. He did something no other Avatar had done before. He paved the way for the future of a more pacifistic way of handling conflict and war.
And he did so without every truly losing himself. He did so with a heart that was loving and a kind personality. He did so as a 12 year old who had to grow and mature in order to survive and thrive.
This is why I believe Aang is an amazing character who deserves love and understanding.

So I’ve had something on my mind for the last week or two that I’ve been trying to figure out how to best start a post about and coming up short. We all know that I have a tendency to be long-winded, and some of this post is going to be stream of consciousness, at least moreso than my usual longer posts, which I usually wait to start until I have a pretty solid idea of what I want to say and how I want to say it. I may go back and edit this some at the end, I may not, probably depends on how it comes out. (Edited at the end to add: I’m not editing anything. It’s long and I’m not expecting anyone to force themselves through it, but thanks to those who do!) Since this is partially me using my blog as a place to ruminate on some things, I’m going to put it under a read more for those who don’t want to have it clogging up their dashboard.
Lately I’ve had a lot of mixed feelings regarding social media and what voices and mindsets I allow to be a part of my everyday life. I put a lot of effort into carefully treading the line between taking unnecessary negativity out of my social media feeds and creating an echo chamber where I only see people who agree with me. Most of the time, the decision comes down to the tone and intent. If someone is consistently rude, angry, or condescending, with very little useful contribution to any conversation I unfollow them. This applies to people on Facebook who constantly use slurs, post hateful things about people with opposing beliefs or political stances (even if I generally agree with that person’s beliefs or stances) with little attention to facts, and it also applies to people here are just needlessly rude with no real contributions to the overall conversation.
The older I get, the more I find choosing kindness to be a priority in my life. I’m not perfect; I fully admit there are still times when I’m rude or condescending. Sometimes this is an accident, and unfortunately sometimes it isn’t. I don’t like this, and I try especially hard not to be intentionally condescending. Kindness is a choice, and progress takes time.
As I’m sure most of you know, I am often very critical of @kristagay‘s posts. I still stand by many, possibly even most, of the opinions I’ve shared. Kindness is important to me, but it’s also important to me to not let other people’s hurtful words or actions go unchecked when I have the ability to say/do something. (This applies to everyone in my radar, not just Krista.) I have very strong opinions on a number of subjects, but it’s especially important to me to speak up in defense of others in the LGBTQA community as that’s a community I belong to and those struggles are more personal to me.
A little while back, I got a string of anons (many were answered, some were deleted) that made it seem like someone was trying to create some sort of feud between me and Krista. As I said in one of the posts at that time, I was under no illusion that Krista was reading any of my posts that didn’t tag her directly, and had no interest in any sort of feud. Krista does not follow me, and in general does not seem to interact much on Tumblr beyond asks to her and posts she is directly tagged in (or reblogs/comments on her posts of course). I would likely be the same way if I stumbled onto a community of people discussing every little detail of people I was friends with in real life. I would want to set the record straight and defend my friends while also respecting their privacy, and as a result I doubt I’d interact much anyway. I respect her choice to not discuss them at all, even the things seen on TV, and hope she will continue to make that choice no matter how annoying people asking her for info might get. (And to Pickles and anyone else who has crossed the line and sent her intentionally inflammatory messages/questions about the Duggars or hate for the sake of hate, please kindly delete your accounts and learn how to interact with actual humans in a respectful way.)
When I got the string of anons asking me about Krista, I took a step back and tried to objectively examine why I followed Krista, why I continued to devote energy in responding to her posts, and if it was worth my time and emotional energy to continue doing so. The difference I found between Krista’s posts, which do often frustrate me, and posts from others who I have chosen to unfollow and/or block is the intent and context behind the posts.
At the end of the day, Krista and I are very similar. We were both raised in very conservative families/churches, who had different plans for us than the lives we’ve chosen to pursue. We’ve both come to believe differently about God than the churches we were raised in. And we both know what it’s like to have to keep up appearances, especially online, in order to not destroy (or majorly hurt) relationships with people in our lives offline who it’s still important to maintain a relationship with.
There are a couple big differences between us. First of all, I’m gay. I came to believe differently than the church I was raised in largely because I’ve had to just to be who I am and not feel depressed and suicidal all the time. When you grow up gay in a conservative family, life gives you two choices: shut off who you are and spend your life convincing yourself you are who you were told you were supposed to be or do major amounts of soul-searching to figure out who you are and how to accept yourself. When you’re already evaluating one major aspect of who you are and what you believe it becomes nearly impossible to not do that same evaluation on the other beliefs you were raised in. Because of this process, I’ve come to see a lot of hypocrisy and downright lies in the belief system I was raised in. This has pushed me into developing a pretty strong set of opinions, beliefs, and political stances that stand in stark contrast to my family and lifelong family friends.
As a cisgendered straight woman, Krista did not have this huge thing forcing her to do major soul-searching. Despite this, she has done soul-searching, and seems to still be doing it. (It’s really a lifelong process, after all.) She has stepped out into a world that she likely didn’t consider being able to live in as a little girl. She’s pursued an educational and career path that’s impressive for even women who were raised being encouraged to focus on education, so for someone in her church and belief system to get to where she is is monumental, and for that I applaud her. So while I definitely disagree with her beliefs on a number of subjects, and will continue to say so (with thoughtful responses, not just complaints) when I feel her posts call for it, I am doing my best to remember that no one was born perfect, and she is still learning just as much as the rest of us are. I’ve said many times that I really do believe her intentions are good, and I stand by that belief. She’s learning. She’s trying. She may be one of the more conservative voices in our tumblr community, but many of us have admitted we used to be worse than we are now, and she’s come a long way from who she once was too.
The other big difference between us, at least as far as tumblr goes, is that she has chosen to attach her name and face to her posts on here, and I have not. Many of you know who I am, follow me elsewhere, etc. That doesn’t change the fact that publicly, all you see is a food-based username and (currently) a photo of Jana Duggar on a boat. I share my first name, my age, and my general location. While someone who knew me offline could likely piece together my identity if they paid enough attention, I am careful to not overly-identify myself. This relative anonymity grants me the privilege of speaking freely online without worrying about offline consequences. Krista has not granted herself that same anonymity. I’m honestly a little embarrassed that I had never considered before the fact that she likely does not feel she can speak freely on Tumblr. I am very careful what I post on my other social media platforms. When my name and face are attached, I pretty much never mention LGBTQA issues for fear of outing myself and losing family members I’m not ready to lose. I don’t post about the abuses found in many Baptist churches or the lasting harmful effects I feel from my overly-religious childhood. This is partially to avoid a can of worms with a widespread ripple effect and partially out of respect for my parents and their desire to not have to defend me for believing things they don’t even agree with themselves. For Krista, the things she says here can and likely do affect her life offline, and it’s something that’s important to keep in mind when reading her posts.
I don’t say all of this to say that Krista gets a pass for hurtful things she says. We all are still accountable for the things we say, and she has chosen to put herself in the position of having to choose between saying things that will hurt her offline life, censoring herself, or staying silent. There are topics I still wish she would just address openly or not at all. But at the end of the day, she has the same right to censor herself here as I do elsewhere, and I will be trying to keep that in mind going forward. When interacting with her privately, she’s only ever proven herself to be kind and open to hearing what I have to say. In the future, I may give her the same respect I often give my offline friends where I just send her a DM to clarify her intent of a seemingly rude or hateful post instead of just calling her out publicly. We’re all learning, Krista included.
Social media, especially Tumblr, has given in to a dangerous mindset that’s often referred to as “cancel culture”. There are times when it is absolutely the right choice to “cancel” someone. Like I said at the beginning of my post, we have the right to choose what voices to allow into our feeds. We should all take advantage of that right and do what’s best for our mental health. I just think we should also be more mindful of context and intent when deciding whether or not to “cancel” someone. We all say we want young girls (and boys) in fundie communities to get out of that lifestyle and find better beliefs, but getting out doesn’t happen overnight. Many of us have the benefit of getting here after shedding many of our toxic beliefs. For those who aren’t there yet, I hope we will just remember to choose kindness and respect and do our best to be open to educating them without being hateful or derogatory.

Coaching and Innovation

Coaching and Innovation
A Research Paper By Silvia Corlazzoli, Business coach, GERMANY
The role of a coach can be instrumental in creating an effective outcome, for either an individual or organization. In this paper, I will discuss the relationship between coaching and innovation. I will go further and focus on the connection points between innovation in both individuals and organizations. To effectively do this, I will start this research by examining aspects of innovation. I will make a comparison between what is happening at personal and company levels and then close by suggesting how coaching can support companies.
As a coach, I believe in challenging clients to envision success as well as supporting them in defining the first step to achieve it. An effective coach is present throughout the client’s progress, helping them understand what works and refreshing or updating things that don’t work. An effective coach knows that it is a journey, made up of moments of enthusiasm and energy, of stopping, struggling, and even discouragement. It is a journey made of searching and requires making space. To welcome something new, one needs to let go of something old. A coach knows how to listen, understand, to be challenging.
This is what I try my best as a coach and what my coach did for me in the story I am going to tell you.
Coaching and Innovation: Story
Here is my anecdote, my personal experience that influenced this research.
Having completed the more practical learning phase of this program, which I must admit I found intense but interesting, stimulating, profound, and enjoyable, it was now time for the second part. One of the requirements for the program was to write this research paper, which turned out to be more challenging than I anticipated.
I have years of experience working in large corporate companies. These years have been loaded with great responsibility, and with all that responsibility, I believe I never missed a deadline.
When I started my coaching certification program, unconsciously I thought that I would do as I have always done: have a clear objective, prepare my plan with priorities, and establish a timeframe in which to do it. And lastly, but most importantly, I would do everything necessary to earn my certification. It seemed easy, as achieving my goals is something I had always done and succeeded in. I didn’t think for a moment that it might be difficult for me to meet this task.
I started working on one of my certification requirements, specifically this present research presentation. The first attempt did not go as well as I wanted and expected it to, and the second attempt resulted in the same on the third trial, I started to get scared. I couldn’t write. I had made several attempts and continued to fail.
The more I failed, the smaller I felt. It was like I couldn’t rely on myself anymore. I had evidence that I was unable to meet a deadline. Nothing was helping me move forward and I felt stuck, bored by my own stories. I almost agreed with the doubt that I was telling myself lies.
I figured I would give myself a deadline just for me. I wanted to become my own boss, the one to be accountable to, the one to be complimented, and the one to be pleased with at the same time. However, I needed to have a conversation with someone. The most ideal person was a fellow coach.
I realized that the first thing I had to deal with was motivation. I wanted to write these papers because I wanted to get certified and work as a coach. This was good, but not good enough as direct motivation. I needed to write something that made sense both to me and others, something worth sharing. Clearly, my strategy from my experience in the corporate world was not working in this scenario. I had to prove to myself that I am capable of making adjustments and doing things differently.
Using a different lens, I realized that what I wanted was clear. I also felt that once this will, vision, and goal emerged, I needed to make it strong. I needed a connection, a strong connection with intent.
During the coaching session, I found some new practices to test. The first one was to try my best to stay connected with the vision. When I woke up every morning, I imagined how my life could be different as a coach using visualization techniques.
At 8:30 p.m. every day, I set an alarm clock with a song that is evocative to me: “oh Superman” by Laurie Anderson. I used this technique to remind myself that I had something important to do. I also promised myself to write something every day. It could be a sentence or a thought, something of mine to share with others and to re-read afterward to find a common thread and perhaps discover a theme I liked. Already, within a week, I must admit that my connection through these practices was increasing.
In one of the sessions, something else unexpected happened; I dug deeper and found myself reliving a moment when I had to do an assignment as a child. The task was to write down what I saw through my window. It was one of the typical school tasks given in Italy where I grew up. However, it was a grey day with rain and fog, and I couldn’t see anything interesting from my window. In fact, I couldn’t see anything at all, and I felt like crying. Reliving that emotion was very strong. I felt that there was something so deep and distant behind me, as another example of not being able to write. It was a surprise and revelation to me.
Adult Silvia wanted to take care of child Silvia at that point. Adult Silvia has other tools that child Silvia did not have. I wondered what I would say to the child Silvia? Immediately the creative moment arrived:
Change the title. Think about what else you would like to write.
Close your eyes and imagine. Use your imagination.
Call a friend and ask her what she sees from her window.
Think of another window that you like and write.
And so on…
I took care of the child and did it as an adult. Within a week the Silvia child was happy.
And I had an idea.
As I couldn’t go back in time to change how I handled things when I was younger, I figured I had to use these suggestions to improve my current situation. I started asking myself some questions: What do I like to write? I like to write letters. I don’t like to write formal, academic things. Letters give me a sense of intimacy. I feel like I’m talking to someone at a personal level. I concluded that I would write a letter.
So, I gave further thought to the letter, the material, the structure, and the tone.
I am writing this research letter on an alternative Friday evening from a laundrette. This is my personal research. I am writing and I feel as connected to the process as I had hoped to be.
When I started this project, the connection between my intent and motivation was a 3. This is on a scale of 1 to 10 (where 1 is low and 10 is high). At this point, the connection was now at a 9. I celebrated this new Silvia with a nature walk under the stars.
I went on to tell myself that when I turn in this paper, I’m going to treat myself to a weekend in a new city that I’ve wanted to go to for a long time. I want to go there fulfilled and carefree. I had a strong feeling that something had changed. I felt that I had succeeded in overcoming the obstacles that I was facing, and I was proud of myself.
What is INNOVATION?
What I wrote in the letter and felt like sharing is about innovation.
I was drawn towards this topic because it is part of our everyday life, and in recent years I’ve had the opportunity to work on it at a personal level. I have also been part of a consulting team on innovation for a corporate organization.
I start by addressing the question: What is innovation? Each person gives a different meaning to the same word. I have read many definitions of innovation and I also understand, based on my personal experience, that what innovation means to me might be different from what it means to you. Skipping the dictionary definitions, I would take you to my favorite.
In his book, The Little Black Book of Innovation, Scott D. Anthony started defining innovation in 5 simple words: “something different that creates value.” Before him, Benoit Godin, professor at the Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique, defined innovation in another interesting way: “a deliberate human change to something existing to create something new.”
Then Fabio Salvadori who in his book Subtractionwas inspired by both above definitions came up with this:
“Innovation is an intentional, human-driven change of something existing into something new, which generates an impact.” I find this definition complete as it includes:
Intentionality vs. the natural evolution of something,
Change of something existing vs. invention,
Which generates an impact. Here the tangibility, the measure of innovation moves from value (S. Anthony) to impact (F. Salvadori). And impact resonates much more through the influence it can have. A more long-term influence.
Personal innovation
Writing this letter, for me, was about voicing my idea of how to develop the research paper and putting it into practice.
I did something I had to do, in my own way and in a new way for me. Doing something (in this case, completing the writing task) in a new way, voluntarily and with an impact, is Innovation.
Looking at the process that helped me to change, the fundamentals I found for personal innovation are:
Creativity: Using curiosity to explore new ways to do things. Allowing myself to focus on what I like to do, what I could do better.
Connection: Daily connection to my goal through new daily practices to be experienced.
Time: To achieve new results through new ways and paths takes time. I realized the importance of leaving time available. Even empty time, to make something happen. I made room for a time dedicated to this evolution.
Support: The importance of having someone you can rely on when it comes to supporting, one who is committed to helping you achieve your goals in a way that you want to achieve them. This someone would challenge and empower me. This is what my fellow coach has done for me.
What happened when I started writing, is what I also describe in my coaching model. The Update coaching model is based on 6 steps:
DEFINE the goal, the dream.
CONNECT to oneself, understand oneself, identify what works and what must change, and recognize one’s own resources.
IDEATE the possible options and solutions with all the senses at your disposal.
PLAN the smallest thing to start doing and think about when to do it, how, with what resources, who or what can support it, and how to overcome possible obstacles.
ACT and do it. Push the button. Start.
LEARN, measuring progress based on what works, what doesn’t, how to use the new findings, and awareness.
And these are the steps that lead to personal innovation. Most of the work is done by the individual. However, having a coach means having someone who supports the process of renewal and innovation, of growth.
Innovation in Organisations
After I achieved awareness regarding personal innovation, I zoomed out and thought about organizations and companies, including how they work and how I have seen effective and ineffective innovation. I have worked for many years in various financial services, corporate companies, and most recently as a consultant in an innovation team. This consulting role allowed me to see that innovation potential in companies is immense.
The parallel between coaching and innovation is strong. It’s a parallel in terms of results: in one case you innovate the person, and in the other, everything else.
The parallels are also strong in terms of steps, the journey to take, and the variables that come into play.
Even with the innovative techniques and methodologies used by companies like Design Thinking, Scrum, and Agile, in general, the same similarities can be found. Coaching is innovation itself, even deep innovation, and that is why it is a powerful and natural amplifier and catalyst of innovation in companies as well.
In his book “Eat, Sleep, Innovate,” which I had the opportunity to read after I wrote my letter, S. Anthony presents his theory of how to make innovation a day-to-day habit in an organization. “You eat every day, you sleep every day and in today’s quickly changing world means you should innovate every day.”
He talks about a culture of innovation within organizations. Anthony indicates that though people may assume innovation is a “mystical activity” requiring beyond-human skills, it is actually a discipline. As such, it can be “managed, measured, mastered, and improved with careful practice. And that “Innovators are consistently searching for different and better ways to do things.”
The more a person is used to working on themselves and becomes accustomed to coaching, the more the organization can benefit. Involving teams, workgroups, communities, and leaders is much easier. It is like speaking the same languages, understanding each other.
Moving from personal work to organizational work is about changing the organization’s culture. And cultural change takes time. Not all individuals experience a growth at the same rate, and some may be resistant to new strategies, outlooks, and perceptions. In addition, those at the leadership level of an organization must not only model cultural changes; they must also be part of the change.
I have seen as part of the organizational procedure the launch of several innovative projects. However, I have only seen this process work in one company. I have seen this transformation of the DNA of the company. It took four years to start to see the impacts of the new way of working and to work differently.
Other timid attempts made that just claimed to be innovative, digital, agile, did not work. On the contrary, they have contributed to increased frustration and demotivation. Changing corporate culture is not something that can be done timidly, or without great commitment.
For organizations I would change the steps of the Update coaching model in this way:
DEFINE the desired culture, the desired mindset.
CONNECT to the people with empathy, identify what works and what is prioritized to change, recognize one’s own resources. With transparency.
IDEATE together the possible solutions. Ideations recall creativity, trigger curiosity.
PLAN the smallest thing to start doing and think about when to do it, how, with what resources, who or what can support them, and how to overcome possible obstacles. For organizations, allocating the right resources in terms of budget is a key element for success.
ACT and do it. Experiment.
LEARN measuring progress based on what works, what doesn’t, how to use the new findings, and awareness. The lesson-learning moments are not a waste of time. They contribute to share and celebrate success stories, to inspire, to be aware of some possible mistakes, and to learn how to survive errors and failures.
Coaches are the catalysts that foster innovation, first on a personal level. Then, this way of working, listening, acting, will subsequently be transferred to the organizational level with amplified consequences.
Having a coach means that individuals in the organization will have a clear understanding of the steps mentioned above, of the innovation journey and will start to apply them on more levels.
The support of coaches and mentors facilitates and accelerates the process of change and growth at both an individual and organizational level.
Coaching allows the people who use it to innovate by encouraging personal effort along with guidance and support. This applies to organizations as well, since they are complex, but are made up of people. On a personal level, the more people that know and understand how to innovate for themselves, the more they will be able to replicate this experience in the collective sphere, that of teamwork and leadership.
Tailored practices, tools, and methodologies can be established for the teams working in an organization.
A specific focus is generally required for management leaders, as culture change within an organization takes time and consistency in addition to active participation from senior leaders.
All companies today are called upon to innovate: some want to, some say so, but often they are not aware of the path of change this requires.
Coaching and innovation combined allow for both personal growth and successful organizational outcomes.
It is not magic, but the impact can be magical.
