the victoria sponge cake bit in “connor’s wedding” felt like a holding-a-mirror-up-to-the-audience moment. when connor is first shown to be freaking out about the cake, we all laugh at him, just like we all did when he freaked out about the butter being “too cold” in season 1, and just like his siblings have been doing his entire life. but when it’s revealed why he’s so sensitive about the cake, we’re forced to take a look at ourselves and wonder why we immediately laughed at him for something that was, in actuality, completely justified, given his trauma. and it makes me wonder how many of connor’s other traits that we, as an audience, mindlessly laugh at actually extend from his incredibly fucked up and traumatizing childhood. because it’s incredibly easy to make fun of him. because in reality, we’re no better than the other roy siblings.

i just cannot get over the fact that connor roy ate victoria sponge for days on end as a kid because it’s what he was given when they took his mother, like a consolation prize, or a bribe. he ate it for days on end and he calls it looney cake and his younger siblings know this about him. and then it’s decades later at his wedding and he’s yelling at the caterers that it’s okay for display but he doesn’t want to see the insides. and then his dad (who was not coming to his wedding) (who never even liked him) (who connor never made proud) dies on his wedding day and connor is last to know. the cake is still there uneaten.

This really was Connor's Wedding episode. One could argue that Succession s4e3 was this named to cover up the big plot point ™, but I think that would be to ignore all the Connor insight we got in such a short space of time.

Everything about the Victoria Sponge cake and his mother? What an alone little child he must have been.

The "He never liked me. I never got to make him proud of me."? Such an earnest first reaction and yet still so self hating and blaming.

His candid talk with Willa? I hate the power dynamics and coercion in their relationship but he honestly opened up to her and allowed her to do the same to an extent.

His siblings forgetting him even when his absence send obvious? Where was Connor's goodbye??!?

God, throughout the seasons he always seemed like a stunted child in just a slightly more naive way than the others, but now?

Now I see Connor as the stunted first victim of a child who was forever trying to be a father for his siblings, despite fatherhood never being modelled for him.

Victoria Sponge is the harbinger of Connor losing a parent, he didn’t ask for it either time, first he lost his mother to an asylum - at Logan’s hand, and now he lost his father… I weirdly hope to see Connor eating a slice of his cake with Willa in the next episode

the worst part of the loony cake incident is that Connor tells the staff they can have the wedding cake on display, but he doesn't want to see the insides.... he can't even LOOK at victoria sponge...
