what's wild to me is siobhan thompson saying "absolutely not, Aelwyn is irredeemable" in some Adventuring Party episode where brennan asked if there was ever a chance the sisters could make up, before he had developed season 2 yet...
and then how the situation blossomed in season 2 like Oh this is also a child who was messed up by awful parents. idk you asked for Aelwyn asks I found this interesting what do you think?
Ohhhhhhh man, you really hit on a sweet spot for me re: Aelwyn. I love talking about this.
From literally the first scene of the first episode of Fantasy High when you meet Adaine and Aelwyn, I was dead, dead, dead certain that Aelwyn was at the same time a glorious bitch and a victim of her parents who was poised for redemption. I did not read it any other way. If you go in my archives, way back in 2018 I was already answering asks with basically drabbles about a potential Aelwyn redemption arc.
I can't even tell you what the specific detail about it was. Maybe just the vibes? Wishful thinking? But I dunno man, all the ingredients were there. I was so sure it was gonna come back in a big way. There was truly no doubt in my mind that Brennan was setting her up for a redemption arc if Adaine was receptive.
And I think Siobhan is a fantastic RP-er. I love her characters so much and I think she's so funny and she solves a lot of plot problems cause she's so smart.
AND YET, in that AP w/ Brennan she was like, "Absolutely not. 1000 years dungeon for Aelwyn."
And I remember watching that like, am I crazy or is she just so lost in the sauce of being Adaine that she genuinely doesn't see this path for redemption? Because I have done that lol. I have been RPing really hard and missed a big and obvious in hindsight thing.
But yeah man, I was 100% sure that that was Brennan's plan from the start because it pinged my narrative senses so hard and then it was literally exactly what I was hoping for and more.
The episode where Adaine gets caught in Falinel and sees Aelwyn and all her hate drains away because Aelwyn is so entirely broken and Adaine is forced to see her not as this big bad mythic bitch but as her sad, abused, older sister? God, that hit me so hard. Cause it hit *Adaine* so hard. She did a 180 so quickly.
Or after they rescue her and Aelwyn in her sleep with several points of exhaustion and no spell slots is instinctively trying to cast a protective ward around Adaine? Because that's who she really is. An abjuration specialist. A protector. Her parents raised her in such away that that trait was twisted around and turned to just self protection, but it's there. With everything else stripped away, it remained.
And then at the end when she hits Aelwyn with that, "Would you be my big sister?" line? I *still* am a mess when I think about it.
But here's what gets me the most. When Adaine triggers the switch in Aelwyn's brain, it reverts her back to her past self--right after the events of the big party/fight at Ost's house. She soon escapes and meets back up with her parents and the next time Adaine sees her is in the nightmare forest. Anguin tries to get Aelwyn to ransack Adaine's mind (which she can't bring herself to fully do) and then when he tries to mindbreak her, she stops him, drawing an attack that puts her into death saves. Before that she tries to dissuade her dad from hurting Adaine. "She's a baby!" Full protective big sister.
And this was Aelwyn WITH HER PAST MIND. This was Aelwyn right after she fought Adaine on the roof. From her POV, it's only been a couple of days since that happened and she was STILL willing to take a bullet from her father for Adaine. That means that, even in season 1, that's the person she was. Which is what I thought all along.
So, lol, yeah. I think that was a very funny thing that Siobhan said and I love her as a PC but I did not agree at all.
