Movement and Fitness
tw: diet culture, ed
So, my relationship with fitness and exercise have been... interesting.
Growing up I never saw myself as athletic. I was the kid that read books during recess and I never really did any sports.
In my college years I really got into Kpop and wanted to look like my favorite idols. Grant it, I was already very thin but want "long lean lines" so I started eating even less then the dismal amount I ate and started doing pilates and yoga on youtube. I think I was doing the blogilates challenges at the time. Although it never lasted long. I would have two weeks of being "consistent" and then not do anything for months.
This went on for years where I barely ate and occasionally did yoga or pilates. Also when I did eat I made sure it was always "healthy, organic, natural, low carb" etc.
Overtime I started doing yoga more for the mindfulness of it. In my mid 20's I really got into hot yoga. It was a great stress reliever, but I still wasn't eating very much and I still saw movement as a means to burn calories.
Then the pandemic hit. I was at least doing hot yoga (albeit slower paced) twice a week prior to the pandemic shutdown. Then the studio closed and I switched to working from home and didn't move at all for almost a year. I think I was averaging 500 steps a day. Any fitness I had been maintaining prior was all out the window now.
Then in May 2021, I woke up with a pain in my stomach worse then anything I had felt before and I have had some debilitating cramps before..... When I got to the hospital there wasn't any clear cause but they proposed my lack of movement and barely eating was causing damage to my digestion..... The pain subsided when I had food and walked around at the hospital. After that I realized I had to make some changes. So..... the next month, I bought a peloton XD
As for diet I did a deep dive into nutrition and eating and found the AMAZING Abbey Sharp and Elaina Efird on youtube. Actual registered dietitians giving good quality advice. I started getting into intuitive eating. Although in the beginning I had to still track to make sure I was getting enough as prior I was getting around 1,000 calories a day and now was shooting for at least 2,000.
Then the peloton effect. So one great thing about the platform is the don't talk about diet culture at all. Its all about joyful movement, getting stronger, doing hard things, and having fun. It was such a mindset shift. I went from wanting to stay super thing to wanting to be strong and do cool things. I ended up buying the peloton tread six months after the bike.
Although it was a reality check. When I first got sucked into the peloton world in June 2020 my fitness stats were:
Could only lift 5 pound weights and barely do a dead-lift with 10 pound weights (peloton has strength classes on the app)
Longest I could last was a 15 min cycling class where I had to stop and catch my breath halfway through.
Standing for longer then 5 minutes made me lightheaded.
Couldn't hold a plank on my knees or do one push on my knees
I had 0 core strength
Walking longer then 5 minutes left me winded.
I was at least semi flexible thanks to all the yoga......
I was objectively very weak......
A year and a half later I can:
Use 15/20 pound weights for upper body and 30/40 pound weights for lower body.
I can do 5 full pushups and hold a plank for 90 seconds
I can stand for long periods of time without getting light headed
I can do 45 minute cycling classes and have done hour long cycling sessions.
I have a strong core!
I can go hiking with my friends and keep up! I've also taken hour long hiking classes on my tread :)
I'm more flexible and can now do crow, half moon, and warrior 3 in yoga!
I put on weight and muscle and although I'm no longer "societal thin" I feel so much better in my body and have adopted a body neutral stance. I care what my body can do and not what it looks like.
I feel so strong now!
But in 2023 I have a new fitness focus and an evolved relationship which I will talk about in my next post!

Okay, here goes. The incredible @everlarkedalways created a GoFundMe to help me out through present circumstances, but before I share that link, I wanted to explain a bit of what’s been going on. I feel awful accepting financial help, in part because I’ve been such a dry well for the past 18 months (I have nothing creative to give back/say “thank you” with) and also because so many of you have previously contributed monies to help me through other crisis points over the past five years (yes, it’s been that long and no, it doesn’t seem to be getting any better). But things are maybe the most desperate they’ve ever been and I really can’t say no to badly needed help.
Because I’m long-winded, I’m going to try to condense this into a simple chronological order. Things have been relentlessly bad since my car accident on December 26, 2013, but this is where the current run really started:
December 2017: The day after Christmas, I went to the ER at 3am with excruciating chest and upper back pain, a bad experience all around (terrible staff, indifferent care). Their best guess was that I’d had an acid reflux attack, something I’d never had before (but have had since, alas :/).
January 2018: The ER bill saga began, and after loads of paperwork/headaches applying for any kind of aid/bill forgiveness, they put me on a payment plan for the $1,343 balance (and yes, that was "after” insurance - Marketplace policies are crap and all they did was “adjust” the total; nothing was covered). Meanwhile, I started taking Lucky to an acupuncturist over an hour’s drive away, desperate to find something to ease her severe separation anxiety (nonstop barking and howling when I was gone, which we have been struggling to treat, with varying degrees of success, for over two years). The sessions were very expensive (around $400 for one month - I had to put them on a credit card that I’m still chipping away at) and actually made her WORSE.
February 2018: The downstairs neighbors left a mildly threatening note about Lucky’s howling - the day before my birthday. In a ridiculous twist of luck, I managed to find a great sitter who only takes little dogs and was (and still is) able to watch Lucky for me as needed, but it cost me $25/day. (At most I would use her two days a week, but you can see how quickly that would add up.) At the same time, I also started administering CBD drops (suggested by our new vet) to Lucks when I had to leave her at home.
July 2018: After increasing the dosage multiple times, I finally started seeing improvement in Lucky’s behavior from a combination of the CBD drops and SAMe, which was huge (note the timespan), but these therapies cost about $100 month. I resolved to make it work somehow.
September 2018: I found out that my workplace had been bought out by an area salon and would be changing hands soon. Shortly thereafter the new owner sent us the employee handbook, which stated that we could not have another job in the same field (many massage therapists in this part of the country work at multiple places as there simply isn’t enough work to go around, especially in the off-season). The new owner was originally okay with me keeping my second job (on-call work at a yoga studio), and then I learned that that position was switching from a subcontractor to an outright rental (I would have to pay up front for the use of the room and possibly make none of it back while having to promote myself as a business), so for several reasons I decided I would leave that second job at the end of October and try to pick up more hours at my “main” job. One bright spot in all this: the downstairs neighbors moved out at the end of the month, but...
October 2018: ...the day after the neighbors moved out, the landlord informed my roommate (a THG fandom friend and content creator) that the owner of our building had sold the property and that we had 30 days to vacate. I can’t even begin to articulate how stressful, expensive, frightening, and exhausting that time was. By the end of October our only real option was a little house approximately 10 miles from town, and miraculously we got ourselves moved out there - to the tune of lots of $$$ and insane energy expenditure.
November 2018: Because I now lived about 20 mins from work and I have to come home at lunchtime to take Lucky out (and give her a booster of anxiety drops), I had to switch to split shifts. If you’ve ever worked split shifts, you will understand why this sucks (you’re never home, you’re always tired, and you never see or spend time with the people you live with). My new boss put me on the schedule for two additional days a week (I initially had just two days a week, period, hence the second job), which initially seemed very promising, but neither myself nor the rest of the staff realized that the new management had an either/or policy when it comes to pay. (This is messy and frustrating to explain, but in a nutshell: instead of getting paid commission for massages and hourly for the rest of your clocked-in time - laundry, desk help, etc - you get paid ONLY commission, i.e., nothing for all the extra things you do, unless the commission divided by hours amounts to less than minimum wage, in which case they pay you minimum wage for the week instead, including for your massage hours. Which is not cool but is, apparently, legal.) So I was driving about an hour a day (20 mins each way, twice, to the tune of about 300 miles/week) just to make minimum wage (we were entering the dead season for massage and I’m the perpetual “second string” therapist anyway, so some weeks I had just four clients in four days :/), which was exhausting and disheartening.
December 2018: Daylight glimmered: my sister (with whom I am extremely close and who I hadn’t seen in a year and a half) flew out to see me after Christmas. A coworker agreed to cover the whole week and a half of her visit for me, and I was a little nervous about taking the time off (unpaid, of course) at such a rotten financial time, but I hadn’t had a vacation of any kind since moving to Maine nor a weekend off since August of 2017. I resolved to be extra frugal during her visit and my work schedule was going to be almost full after she left, so I was pretty sure I could squeak through somehow.
I saw her off on her return trip, and that night I was carrying some dishes down from our living room when I took a very bad fall down the stairs. These are awful, steep “Maine stairs,” and in my fall my left leg shot out through the open side of the staircase and wedged the knee against the bookcase in the dining room below. When I tried to get up I realized that something was very wrong with my knee, and my roommate helped me to bed with ice, a brace, ibuprofen, etc. The following morning I went to the hospital and was directed to the same stupid ER (the last place I ever wanted to go again, but they don’t have urgent care out here and wouldn’t let me just see a GP, so I broke down and cried in admissions). The care I received was middling, if not as bad as on my previous visit, and the nurse-practitioner ordered no weight-bearing for three days, which meant losing the rest of that (desperately needed) work week, and advised following up with orthopedics the next week if the knee wasn’t better.
My wonderful roommate made all kinds of accommodations for my comfort for those three days, and I implemented all the extra therapies I could think of (turmeric, arnica, l-glutamine, Epsom salt soaks, etc). I asked my employers about the possibility of picking up non-massage hours (covering the desk, laundry, etc) but was given the impression that there was nothing for me to do till I could return to massage again. I went to the orthopedic doctor last Thursday and his diagnosis was an MCL (least concerning of the knee ligaments) sprain or tear. I was already strides ahead on his self-care recommendations (getting myself off the crutches, constantly wearing a good brace) and he was supposed to refer me for some PT, but I haven’t heard a peep on that front, and I’m not particularly concerned because, Lord knows, my insurance probably wouldn’t pay for that anyway. He estimated 4 weeks to full recovery but I’m determined to get back to work before that.
So, here’s where we’re at: I’m out of work at the worst time of year, and at the very least, I’ll lose 2.5 weeks of pay (on top of the planned week I took off, plus Christmas and New Year’s were unpaid holidays). Because we live in Maine where everyone has beastly heating fuel, even in a decently insulated house (as I believe this one to be), it costs us around $350 a month to keep the place at 58 degrees through the winter months. (Yes, 58 degrees. 60 if we’re splurging.)
My credit cards are maxed out from car repairs and copious Lucky expenses (including an emergency vet visit - she ended up being fine but it was one of those things that happens after hours/over a weekend and you really shouldn’t wait several days to have checked out).
Oh, and just for fun, our January rent payment got lost in the mail. The landlord was very nice about it and we promptly sent out a replacement, but this meant paying $35 for a stop-payment on the missing check (did I mention that I had to buy checks, to the tune of almost $30, just for paying rent?).
Those of you who have already donated: you are quite literally keeping me going right now. You covered Lucky’s rabies booster yesterday and refills of her food and supplements (all of which, naturally, were running out at the same time), and Lucky is absolutely the reason I’m still alive, so her care honestly means more to me than my own.
I have no idea what my medical bills will look like at this point. I’m assuming the ER visit will be around $1000, and I’m sure the orthopedic visit will be up there somewhere too. As soon as bills start coming in I’ll apply for aid (or, likelier than not, a payment plan), but in order to do that they’re going to want my new tax returns, which means I’m going to have to get my taxes done (probably in Feb) just to find out what my ultimate medical expenses will be. (I used to do my own taxes cheaply through TaxAct, but I was a subcontractor for part of the year, which complicates things and means having to pay someone $$$ to do them this round. I may actually owe on my taxes this year, which is terrifying.)
The healing has been going well overall and I’m hoping to be able to go back to work next week, but I don’t want to assume my knee will oblige. To add insult to injury, I just got hammered with a terrible cold (the kind that levels you in bed), so my body is triaging itself and I’m not sure which is going to get the care first. Surprisingly enough, Lucky’s being a great little nurse, but recovery is a difficult and very lonely process, especially when you get saddled with illness on top of injury.
Anyway, sorry for the ramble. I’ve been reluctant to talk about the miserable past year, but in light of the fact that I’m receiving (and, I guess, asking for :/ ) help, I thought you should know what’s been going on. Thanks for listening and blessings on your day. <3

Benefits of physical activity for heart health
Physical activity is any form of movement that exercises your muscles and uses more energy than you use at rest. Walking, jogging, dancing, swimming, yoga, and gardening are examples of physical activity.
Being physically active, along with eating a healthy diet and not smoking, is one of the most important things you can do to keep your heart and lungs healthy. However, many Americans are not active enough. The good news is that even a small amount of physical activity is good for your health. The more active you are, the better you will benefit.
Physical activity, especially aerobic activity, is beneficial for your heart. Physical activity strengthens the heart and reduces risk factors for coronary heart disease. It can also lower blood pressure; improve and control levels of cholesterol and other fats in the blood; improve your body's ability to control blood sugar and insulin levels, which reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes; help you maintain a healthy weight; and reduce levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) in your body, a sign of inflammation. High levels of CRP can increase your risk of heart disease. Inactive people are nearly twice as likely to develop heart disease as physically active people.
In people with heart illness, regular aerobic activity helps the heart work better. It may also reduce the risk of a second heart attack in people who have had a heart attack before.
Vigorous aerobic activity may not be safe for individuals with heart disease. Talk to your doctor about the type of activity that is safe for you.
Recommendations for physical activity
In 2008, the US Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) released new physical activity guidelines. For adults, the guidelines advise that:
Some physical activity is better than none.
For the best health benefits, do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity each week. Each activity session should stay at least 10 minutes. For example, walk briskly (moderate physical activity) five days a week for at least 30 mins each time.
More physical activity will improve your health benefits.
Moderate- or high-intensity muscle-strengthening activities should be included on two or more days per week. These activities should work all major muscle groups, including the legs, hips, back, chest, abdomen, shoulders, and arms. Examples include lifting weights, working out with resistance bands, sit-ups and push-ups, yoga, and heavy gardening.
If you have a chronic (ongoing) condition, such as heart disease, lung disease, or diabetes, ask your doctor if you can be physically active. Ask your physician which activities are safe for you.
Get started and stay active
Physical activity is an important part of a heart-healthy lifestyle. To get started and stay active, make physical activity part of your everyday routine, track your progress, stay active and stay safe.
Make physical activity part of your everyday routine
You don't have to be a marathon runner to reap the full benefits of physical activity. Do activities that you enjoy and make them part of your everyday routine. If you haven't been active in a while, start small and build up slowly. Many people like to start with walking and gradually increase the time and distance.
Customize benefits
People appreciate different things. Some people may place great importance on the health benefits of physical activity. Others want to be active because they enjoy recreational activities or because they want to look better or sleep better. Some people want to be active because it helps them lose weight or allows them to spend time with friends.
Identify the benefits of physical activity that you enjoy. This will help you personalize the benefits of physical activity.
Be active with your friends and family Friends and family can help you stay active. For example, go hiking with a friend. Take dance lessons with your spouse or play catch with your child. The possibilities are limitless.
Make daily activities more active You can make your daily routine more active. For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Instead of sending emails, walk down the hall to a colleague's desk. Rake the leaves instead of using a leaf blower.
Reward yourself with time for physical activity Sometimes taking a bike ride or a long walk relieves stress after a long day. Think of physical activity as a special moment to refresh your body and mind.
Track your progress Consider keeping a diary of your activity to help you track your progress. Many people like to use a pedometer, a small device that counts their steps, to record the distance they walk each day. These tools can help you set goals and stay motivated.
Be active and safe Physical activity is safe for almost everyone. You can take the following steps to make sure it's safe for you too:
Be active regularly to increase your fitness level.
Do activities that match your health goals and fitness level. Start small and slowly increase your activity level over time. As your physical condition improves, you will be able to engage in physical activity for longer and with greater intensity.
Spread your activity out over the week and vary the types of activities you do.
Wear the proper gear to protect yourself and follow safety rules and policies, such as always wearing a helmet when riding a bike.
Stay active in safe, well-lit, and well-maintained environments that are separated from vehicular traffic.
Make wise decisions about when, where, and how to be active. Consider weather conditions, such as hot or cold, and modify your plans as needed.
Speak to your doctor if necessary
Healthy people who do not have heart problems do not need to consult a doctor before beginning moderate-intensity activities. If you have a heart condition or chronic condition, such as heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, talk to your doctor about what kind of physical activity is safe for you. You should also talk to your doctor about safe physical activities if you have symptoms like chest pain or dizziness.

17 Reasons to Row, Row, Row Your Way to Killer Fitness
In a gym packed with ellipticals, treadmills and bikes, the rowing machine was once the piece of equipment you could count on to be unoccupied. Well, not anymore.
Suddenly, fitness experts are raving about the benefits of rowing machines — aka, ergometers or ergs.
So get ready to kiss spinning goodbye, ‘cuz it’s all about rowing now, baby.
All the rowing perks…
full-body burn
approachable workouts
low-impact wins
meditative moves
cardio-licious
buh-bye, treadmill boredom
affordability
#LegDay
personal records
to burn calories
it’s trendy
for fun!
fast fitness
cardio + strength training
brain gains
convenience
to shake things up
Whether you buy your own machine or hop on one at the gym, rowing offers big benefits. Keep scrolling for the deets.

17 reasons to reach for the rowing machine
1. You’ll get a full-body workout
Maybe you think rowing = ripped arms. But according to the American Fitness Professionals Association, rowing is 65 to 75 percent legs and 25 to 35 percent upper bod.
It’ll shred your upper back, pecs, arms, abs, and obliques. It’ll also strengthen those quads, calves, and glutes.
2. It’s approachable
Rowing is great for fitness newbies because the machines can be customized to your fitness level.
Rowing is also a safe, active sport for folks who are blind or visually impaired. In a 2015 study of people with limited vision, participants who rowed 5 days a week for 6 weeks decreased their total body fat percentage and gained flexibility and strength.
3. Get low… low-impact, that is
Forget the joint stress of running on hard pavement. With rowing, you get to choose your movement and pace, which is *super* helpful when you’re recovering from an injury or marathon.
Rowing can even be a great choice for folks with early osteoarthritis. In a 2014 study, peeps who rowed for 8 weeks experienced 30 percent better joint rotations in their elbows, shoulders, and knees.
4. Ommm… it’s actually pretty meditative
Whether you row on the open water or in your living room, it’ll quickly become your daily dose of Zen. The smooth, repetitive steps of the row stroke — catch, drive, finish, and recovery — become trance-like after a while.
Like other exercise, rowing releases endorphins to boost your mood kick stress to the curb.
5. Hello, cardio!
Rowing isn’t just for strength training. Ergs are *amazing* for your heart and lungs.
Cardio workouts get your blood pumping to every part of your body, which could potentially prevent heart probs down the road.
6. Goodbye, treadmill boredom!
YOLO: So many people are swapping their treadmills, ellipticals, and exercise bikes for rowing machines.
Why? Personal trainer Shane Farmer of Dark Horse Rowing says, “Because it’s complete. If you look at an elliptical, treadmill, etc., all of those work one very specific muscle group.” Meanwhile, “the big benefit of the rowing machine is that you get everything hit at once.”
7. It’s easy on the wallet 🤑
You can snag a quality machine for $100 — that’s basically less than a month of hot yoga.
Some erg prices climb above $1k, but there are plenty of simple, streamlined options in the double digits. Plus, if you’re swapping your gym membership for a machine, you’ll be saving money in no time.
8. Toned legs for days
Never skip leg day, amirite?
The rowing machine works your legs and arms in one swift move, so you can kiss your unnecessarily complicated gym schedule goodbye.
Bonus: You’ll torch your butt, too.
9. Personal records
Some people just can’t resist a challenge. If you’re the type to arm wrestle someone twice your size or strain to break your PR in a 5K, try an erg.
Though you’ll move through the same motions, you can raise the resistance and push your speed as you become a more seasoned rower. Level-up action FTW.
10. You’ll crush calories
Health experts report that a 30-minute rowing session burns up to 377 calories.
We don’t have to tell you that the number on the scale isn’t everything. But if you’re trying to lose weight for health reasons, you need to burn more cals than you consume.
11. It’s totally cool now
So, #rowing is the fitness buzzword of the moment. But it wasn’t always that way.
“I’ve been putting out videos since 2015,” Farmer says of his rowing channel. “And I started with the idea of, I’m gonna make rowing cool. Well, here we are.”
Even if you don’t care about what’s trending, at least you’re likely to have a friend or two who can compare rowing #goalz.
12. Fun fitness FTW
Since rowing works most of your muscle groups, you really have to stay engaged while doing it. Basically, it takes just enough effort to keep things challenging and fun.
You can still binge-watch “Gossip Girl” while you row — but you might be feelin’ yourself too much to notice Chuck’s antics.
13. It’s like a 20-minute gig
You don’t need to spend half your life at the gym to reap results with an erg. It’s the MVP of jam-packed schedules everywhere.
The CDC recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous movement per week. Rowing sits somewhere between moderate and vigorous, so just 20 minutes a day more than covers your minimum.
14. Cardio + strength = a winning combo
In case you haven’t already heard, rowing machines knock out two birds with one stone (or two essential types of exercise with one sweet machine).
Ergs consistently strengthen your guns and pins while getting your heart pumping.
15. Brain gains
There are so many reasons to exercise — and most of them have nothing to do with a bangin’ bod. Hopping on your rowing machine could reduce stress, boost happy chemicals, and even combat cognitive decline.
16. Quarantine convenience, bby
You’re probably home a lot RN, and that could include gym time.
Unlike other exercise equipment, rowing machines fold up to easily slide under the bed or get tucked into a closet. Who needs a fancy home gym, anyway?
17. Change is good
Rowing is unfamiliar to many folks, so it takes patience and vulnerability to learn the ropes. Farmer says the slight learning curve of an erg could actually change your outlook on life.
“If you’re willing to say, ‘I need to learn this’ … you’re probably going to be willing to open up the rest of your life to say, ‘I need to learn other things. I don’t know it all,’” he says.
Let’s break down the rowing flow
Say it with me: Legs, core, arms. Arms, core, legs.
Here’s your step-by-step primer to using a rowing machine:
Lock in. Strap your feet into the pads. Make sure they don’t slide around.
Grab hold. Next, bring your knees up and reach for the front handlebar, aka the “catch.” Your torso should tilt slightly forward, but your spine should be straight.
Activate the leg sequence. Use your leg muscles to push off the footplate. Really power-up those hamstrings.
Engage your core. Squeeze your abs and lean backward. Just as you’re about to hit a 45-degree angle, pull the handlebar toward your bod and lightly touch your chest with it.
Work your shoulders. You’ve reached what’s called the “finish.” For the big finale, pull your shoulder blades together.
Flip it and reverse it. Now reverse the movement back to the catch. Extend your arms, pull your torso forward, bend your knees, and bring your legs up top. One stroke down! 👏
Achieving next-level form
Avoid injury and discomfort by focusing on perfect pacing and posture at the beginning of your #RowLyfe adventure.
Push, don’t pull
“Imagine the movement as a push, rather than trying to pull the handle,” says Farmer.
He explains that your rowing stroke should break down to about 60 percent leg work, 40 percent upper body. “If you’re thinking about pushing, odds are you’re going to use that larger muscle driving group, which is going to create a more effective stroke,” he adds.
Slow down
First form, then speed. Farmer encourages thinking about the rowing movements parts and concentrating on good form throughout.
“Slowing it down gives your brain time to process that and think through each,” he says. “Sequencing is really important to getting the entirety of the stroke right.”
The 20-min rowing workout
Farmer’s put together the perfect rowing machine workout to help you sweat it out and perfect your form.
youtube
Warm up
“You never want to jump into a workout cold,” says Farmer.
Try some light moves that wake your muscles without making your heart race:
hip openers
squats
a lil jog in place
Set up
Now, get your erg ready.
Click “Select workout.”
Choose “Single time.”
Finally, change “Split length: to 1-minute intervals.
Let’s do this thing
Think of this workout as a ladder. You’ll work your way up to 25 strokes per minute, stay there for 2 minutes, then climb back down.
By varying your stroke speed, you get a smooth, moderately intense workout. Here’s the play-by-play.
Minute Strokes 1 16 2 17 3 18 4 19 5 20 6 21 7 22 8 23 9 24 10 25 11 25 12 24 13 23 14 22 15 21 16 20 17 19 18 18 19 17 20 16
The cool down
You did it! Now cool down for at least 5 minutes. Try lightly rowing, stretching, or walking.
Now pat yourself on the back for a job well done! 💪

I don’t know if anyone cares, but I’ve lost 10 lbs in 3 weeks (127 to 117) and it’s 80% Diet. I know a lot of girls on here are looking for the right diet to get them to their goal. Even if our goals are different, I wanted to write this to try to help some of you out.
My daily food intake consists of:
- 2 scrambled eggs with sea salt in the morning (9am)
- A venti coffee with as much half n half as I want and stevia for sweetener at 12pm. This holds me over until 3, hence why I’m so liberal with the half n half!
- 1 chocolate sea salt RX Bar (3pm). This has 210 calories, 12g protein and 24g carbs. I’m ok with this, because this is the last thing I’m going to eat until way later today.
- I go to the gym at 6pm and do 30 min cardio (either elliptical, running or abs). Then I do a very long yoga workout, about an hour. However, my favorite yoga style is Hatha, which focuses on holding poses for a very long time. It’s not fast, sweaty yoga like vinyasa. Please research Hatha if you don’t know anything about it!! It makes me feel so happy and my flexibility has improved insanely (full splits, handstands, forward folds, etc.). It seriously feeds my soul. Also, once or twice a week I’ll cut my yoga session down to half an hour and squeeze in a 30 min lifting session in between my cardio and yoga. So it would be like 30 min elliptical, 30 min upper body lifting session, 30 min yoga.
- Then I go home and make a big ass salad at around 9pm. My favorite is buttercup lettuce and kale in a giant mixing bowl, with about 2 tbsp olive oil and a bunch of balsamic vinegar. I throw a little sea salt on, too. (I know, I’m weird). I also have two to three pieces of this really yummy salami or another protein, like lunch meat.
- All day, I’m chugging water. I keep a 24oz blender bottle with me at all times and refill it 3-4 times a day on average.
- I get sweet cravings at night, so to curb this I have a chamomile tea with stevia and a little half and half (not as much as earlier because it’s late). This is usually around 10:30.
- I should also add that I’m constantly keeping myself busy. I work from 10-6 mon-Friday, keep a strict gym schedule, and then I go home and work on music from 9-11. Then I unwind with Netflix and/or a book and am lights out by 12. Up again at 8am.
I really hope this helps you see results like it did me!! It’s added so much structure to my life. I like adding more tiny responsibilities in my schedule as I get more comfortable with the workload. Like after a week in I added using a charcoal teeth whitening powder every night after I brush my teeth, and so on.
Good luck everyone, sending best wishes and love to all of you ❤️

Park Igls Mayr Clinic, Austria
Have you ever heard of the Mayr cure? I hadn’t, until Park Igls Mayr Clinic came on my radar. Going for a detox in Austria was never on my list – until life changed a bit for us and, in all honesty, it was one of the best experiences I have had to date.
Was it a pleasant one? Well, it depends how you look at it, where you are in your life and how the concept of a full detox appeals.
There aren’t many reviews of the Park Igls Mayr Clinic – I found two which you can read here and here. Luckily for me, I do know Jess and was able to ask her some questions before I made my way to Innsbruck (which is served by BA from both Heathrow and Gatwick). Tatler considered it the most effective medi-spa in 2015 and it remained on Conde Nast Traveller’s Top 35 spas in the world list. Awards aside, here is how my stay at Park Igls went.
What is the Mayr method
Early in the 20th Century, the Austrian doctor and scientist Franz Xaver Mayr developed a theory that would fundamentally influence the course of preventive medicine. He based his approach on the fact that most common lifestyle diseases originate in the digestive system.
Preventive medicine at the Park Igls Mayr Clinic is based on six principles: alongside Cleansing, Supplementing, Self-discovery and Exercise, Modern Mayr Medicine adds the pillars of Rest and Education to achieve sustainable results and allow guests to enjoy a new and much improved quality of life.
You can read more about it here – but the principle is that you will be going on a detox programme, eating very little (therefore you will lose weight – which is not the goal in itself, but obviously will happen as you will be on a calorie-controlled diet), but the journey begins just there.
What Park Igls offers
Park Igls operates as a normal hotel (you can just book a room and turn up) but most guests are there to go on a personalised Mayr programme.
There is a variety of options, as derivations of the traditional programme. If you have a look at Park Igls Mayr Clinic website, you will see the various choices you have. I was on the de-stress programme, which included the following:
The Basic Programme
2 craniosacral therapy sessions (50 mins each)
2 talk therapy/coaching sessions (50 mins each)
3 combination heat packs (hay flowers and moor)
4 partial body massages – primarily acupressure & connective tissue massages (25 mins each)
1 metabolic detox bath
The classic programme costs 1254 Euros for a week, and the destress programme costs just under 1887 Euros for a week. Accommodation is charged separately and starts at 1000 Euros per week (and the price is the same almost for single or double occupancy).
Most people go on their own – but you will also see couples and groups of friends, so anything goes. Obviously ‘full board’ is included (!) and there will be no bar bill on check-out.
One thing I would like to make clear is that you are not going on a luxury holiday with a wellness element, like The Golden Door, which I recently reviewed (and thoroughly enjoyed) in California. Park Igls Mayr Clinic is a medical facility (with a rather nice hotel and wellness component) – it offered a truly unique experience which may or not be right for everyone, but for me, at that time and place, was exactly what I needed – and more.
My programme was less medical and more focused on my mental wellbeing – I enjoyed my ‘talk therapy’ sessions, and I was seen by a doctor three times during my 7-night stay. I had daily massage treatments – but again, they weren’t ‘spa massages’. Christine was my therapist for the whole week and she ‘gave me what was required. My reflexology session was incredibly painful – but much much needed. She talked me through all the pressure points like no one has before. I had two sacro-cranial massages included in my package, but they were so good, I added some more. She told me I had to cry, because she could feel sorrow inside me. I had visions of a German-speaking lady beating me up – it so wasn’t like that.
Doctor Kolnig, which was ‘my doctor’ explained to me that the reason why I hadn’t lost the weight that I put on in the last 12 months (I stopped smoking and had 2 rounds of IVF, in addition to the 2 the year before) was because of stress. It didn’t matter how much I was eating or exercising – my emotional side was preventing the physical side from reacting. I wasn’t expecting to hear that from an Austrian doctor – and this is one of the parts of the experience I appreciated the most.
I loved how they were incredibly ‘medical’ – other guests were doing blood tests, MRIs, liver cleanses, pre-diagnosing Alzheimers, getting heart problems diagnosed. But the team at Park Igls believed in alternative therapies – like acupuncture and reflexology and I found the way they combined both to be absolutely perfect. I tried laser acupuncture for my tennis elbow and could not believe it.
You see the doctor the next day you arrive – so whatever you do, do NOT arrive on a Saturday like I have. I was told not to – but I did it anyway and I would recommend you do arrive any other day of the week, so you can actually start your programme when you see the doctor.
You are measured and weighed and put on a numbered programme. The Mayr cure ranges from zero (total fasting) to level 7, where you are combining all sorts of food, and throughout your stay, and depending on your progress, you move up the ladder (and eat more!).
I started on level 3, which is around 900-1000 calories a day, and I stayed there until the last two days, where I was moved on to levels 4-6 (but more on that later).
A typical day at Park Igls Mayr Clinic
Breakfast is served between 7.30-9am so you wake up at whatever time you want and the first thing you have to do is drink the bitter water, which you take up to your room the night before and mix up with tepid water in the morning.
The bitter water is bitter (duh!), and will make you go to the loo exactly 3 times a day. It took me 2 days to get to that level and you will see people sometimes running from breakfast to the loo. Everyone is on the same boat, so to speak and it does work a treat.
For breakfast, you will be given a stale bread roll, and your choice of one of the Mayr foods as well as 30g or 50g of a protein of your choice – and you can see the list below (on a different image).
You also have to chew every bite 40 times – that produces saliva which then helps digestion. And also tells your brain when you are full. You are encouraged to not speak during meals and/or read or play with your phone. Focus on the food and enjoy the moment. I thought this was a bit weird – but as the days went by, I really did savour everything in a completely different way. You do not drink anything during your meals – interestingly, it wasn’t as hard as I thought.
A tip: have your bread toasted. It makes it a lot more bearable. My strategy was to have foods that weighed less so I could visually have more of it – so I only had coffee on the first day. My typical breakfast was the low fat yoghurt, the bread and alpine cheese or a scrambled egg.
You also have to drink 3-4 litres of water a day, outside of meals. This means a LOT of peeing, namely in the first couple of days, but things go back to normal at around day 5.
You have a daily programme of scheduled activities – like your massage, doctor appointments, beauty treatments (I highly recommend a pedicure there) and you can sign up to various exercise classes, as well as sightseeing activities.
I started each day with a Bath treatment called Kneippen, which involves sitting down with your feet in a bucket of warm water and every 5 minutes go for a lap in a VERY cold mini pool. If this did not wake you up, nothing will.
My programme included some treatments and that meant getting naked every day for those private treatments. I am not a naked in public person and I think more people saw me naked that week than in the last 10 years. These people were the therapists and attendants, who, I have to say, were incredible.
I had an issue whereby the classes I wanted to do clashed a lot with my scheduled appointments. Half the classes are in English, but I wonder if there is a way to make yoga in German work for everyone? I had to compromise and I did yoga once, went for a morning walk twice and for a swim three times.
I also napped a lot (as I felt exhausted on some of the days) and read 3 books and 9 magazines during my stay. Make sure you take these with you (and then leave behind for other guests). There are daily English newspapers and as people shared their reading materials, it made for quite a good selection in English. Naturally, most items are in German.
Lunches and dinners were for me soup, 2 sesame crackers and 50g of protein. Whilst I was hungry for the first 2 days, I did enjoy the selections. I almost always had mozzarella, smoked salmon, cream cheese or the alpine cheese. And delicious hummus.
On the 6thday I was given cooked food (rabbit and fish, I seem to remember) and blimey, it was interesting to go back to it.
By following the Mayr diet you will obviously lose weight – I lost 3kg in 5 days. But the point of the whole exercise is not just that (or that at all). I had been having an issue with my skin due to the IVF drugs – and no matter how many facials I tried, nothing cleared my skin up. My skin was even worse during the first days of my stay – but after I left, I have my face back, so to speak. I get the odd spot before my period as normal, but everything else is gone. I booked a facial too (with proper extraction, Germanic style), and I think it was the best outcome I could have hoped for.
One of the things worth mentioning: you will be caffeine-free, so expect some real headaches on the first couple of days. Everyone has them – this is where I smugly say I did not as I have been caffeine-free (90% of time) for the last year, so I did not have to deal with that. But I still did not sleep well – and the doctor did give me some magic sleep drops.
I signed up to a cooking class one afternoon – the soups they serve at Park Igls Mayr Clinic are outstanding and I wanted to understand how they made them.
I have recently rounded up some healthy cookbooks.
I also went on a sightseeing trip to Seefeld, which was a gorgeous town 40 minutes away. One day, I went to Innsbruck for some shopping – you are given a free return bus ticket a day during your stay, and it takes about 15-20 minutes to get to the city centre.
It was very hard to walk past bakeries – it seemed to be that every shop was a bakery, but I overcompensated with some very good shopping. There aren’t a lot of shops in Innsbruck, but I found a handful of very well curated designer shops (Einswaller) and quite a few great home shops. It made for a nice afternoon, anyway!
Having the evenings to yourself
Dinner ends at around 7.30pm and I had a chat with my new friend Carina every evening and we parted ways at around 8.30pm. I never go to bed at that time at home and I was a bit nervous to what I would do each evening.
I will make a small comment on the ‘common living room’ decor which was quite.. strange. The whole facility is quite modern and this room just didn’t flow (in my opinion).
You are encouraged to have a hot water compress (a hot water bottle in other words, but with a bit more skill) on your liver each night – and I really enjoyed it. I took my Amazon Fire and watched some films every night which was lovely. And I read. I read more that week than in a whole year, I think.
I left my phone in the room for a few meals and that was quite liberating!
The room and bathroom
The rooms are all modern and very functional – everything works well and I would recommend you book the best room you can, as I personally spent a lot of time in the room and loved having the separate seating area.
I had a ‘junior suite’ which came with the most generous hanger selection I have seen in a long time – and of course I took WAY too many clothes and shoes. There are sockets everywhere and I used my desk every day as I did have some work commitments I had to honour.
The bathroom came with a separate bath and shower (with excellent water pressure), and only an organic shampoo + shower gel. You were asked not to use moisturisers during your stay so they wouldn’t interfere with the detox process – and guess what? I did not and did not have a problem. I took make up but I never used it. I also used up some face masks I brought from home (why not) and ordered every pillow from the excellent pillow menu, until I found the perfect combination for me. In Austria, they tend to offer 2 pillows of different sizes and I needed some larger ones. I also gave the leg pillow a try and loved it. There is no turndown service (and definitely no chocolates on your pillow every night).
The staff at Park Igls
I thought the service was second to none – and I mean it from my heart. You are set up for success – everyone is on your side. But I thought people could be a bit cold and ‘too medical’ – and it was the exact opposite. Anything I asked for, it was always a pleasure.
What to wear at Park Igls
Things are pretty casual at Park Igls and during the day, most people wear their robe (and also to dinner sometimes).
You take your own workout clothes and people did make an effort for dinner (normal trousers and shirts for men, top and trousers and flat shoes for women). I would suggest taking your own flip flops and, of course, swimwear. Walking shoes (or trainers or something) are highly advisable too. No need for heels either.
Final thoughts
A medical detox is something that isn’t, of course, for everyone. If you asked me last year, I would very politely decline the invite (or have zero interest). With where I was in my life, I said yes and was on a plane two days later.
As I made my way to Park Igls Mayr Clinic , I was a little bit nervous – I had never been on my own for a whole week, I thought I would be uncomfortable and it did not happen. I loved being on my own, I needed for nothing, and yes I was hungry at times (very hungry some times), but things got better.
I think the fitness aspect of the programme could be improved – you can book personal training sessions, but I personally missed out on many classes. I was unlucky that I went on a week where the Pilates instructor was away – but I think some reformer machines would actually be incredibly popular. If Park Igls is trying to appeal to a younger audience, I think this is an area where there is room for improvement. The daily walks were popular (I went at 7am on the first day, but then slept late on the other days) as were the post lunch nordic walks.
But overall, my body reacted to the treatment and I feel like a cloud has lifted from my shoulders.
We have done a 5-day Mayr cure at home post Christmas and we felt amazing and lost the same weight. But we felt amazing and then resumed normal life with a healthier approach.
Park Igls Mayr Clinic gave me more than just a detox and I will go back. I am making plans to do so, and also for my husband to go. But separately – because in all honesty, I think it is an experience to be enjoyed alone.
If you are considering a medical detox, I do recommend Park Igls Mayr Clinic 100%.

What’s it like being pregnant during the global pandemic?
Lisa, one of our NEST ambassadors interviewed our other ambassador Anna about what it is like being pregnant during the Covid-19 outbreak. Here is what she said .....
Q. SO, CAN YOU TELL US HOW MANY MONTHS PREGNANT YOU ARE AND HOW YOU HAVE BEEN FEELING GENERALLY THROUGHOUT YOUR PREGNANCY PLEASE?
I am currently 30 weeks pregnant which means i am in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy which roughly translates to month 7 - 10 weeks (ish) to go! Baby is currently the size of a large head of broccoli according to my app!
Overall I’ve been feeling generally well, however i think it's useful to break up my well being into physical health and mental health. Physically, everything has been fine, no problems with baby at all my check ups and appointments, a very similar experience to my first pregnancy in fact. Mentally, I have been quite up and down. My last birth was quite traumatic, I think it was almost unavoidable that this would trigger feelings of anxiety and bring up bad memories in this pregnancy. I did have some great therapy after my last birth and I contacted my therapist recently to ask about my feelings at the moment, she also confirmed that no matter how well therapy had gone last time, it is entirely normal that I had experienced some negative feelings now - on just a hormonal level, there is so much uniquely going on inside a pregnant person’s body, that it just cannot be completely accounted for during any kind of treatment or therapy. This made me feel better as i had started to feel like i had failed in my therapy sessions and they had not worked.
My appointments with the midwife and visits to hospital have been very triggering of bad memories and there have been many tears during the discussions of how i have been feeling. These appointments have then left me with feelings of residual low mood and anxiety for the next day or so.
Q. DO YOU THINK YOUR EXPERIENCE OF PREGNANCY HAS BEEN DIFFERENT DUE TO THE PANDEMIC? IF SO, IN WHAT WAY?
the experience of pregnancy has been very different and i can think of both good and bad ways lockdown has influenced this;
some of the bad points:
Not seeing friends, family or work colleagues. This is usually what keeps me going if i've been feeling low. But i haven't been able to get that positive distraction through work or being able to connect with friends and family and just get that general good feeling you get when you interact with others.
I've missed all the attention! As a pregnant woman, I just feel like the world is a kinder and friendlier place! You suddenly have this unspoken connection with most of the women you come into contact with - other mums who know how you feel and have a kind word or a smile. People get out of your way, people offer their seat (most of the time) people have an immediate topic of conversation they can use to connect with you. and i for one, really love this.
Some of the interventions that I believe might have been available to me for helping my mental health, have not been possible due to everyone working from home. And it's just unavoidable to notice that the connection online you have with someone just isn't the same as in person.
I have continued to work my job, from home. This has had its ups and downs but the novelty has definitely worn off, it feels like an invasion of my privacy and my safe space and I AM SO UNCOMFORTABLE!
I have also been unable to go swimming or attend the gym - something that was immensely helpful for my mental and physical health in my last pregnancy. So I feel like I am definitely less fit.
however there have been some good points too:
I have had more time to myself, this has meant that I have probably been overall a lot less stressed than if i was at work or interacting with other people. People have commented on how much more relaxed I seem.
In my job, in my role as a support worker, I spent a lot of time in the car. Driving too and from work of course but also got and from my visits from people's homes. I do wonder if this laid back seated position contributed to a breech presentation for baby in my last pregnancy. At home, am I at least able to get up and down more and seat myself in a more upward, forwards and open position - Baby feels much more comfortable.
I've had some precious extra time with my 2 year old before baby no 2 arrives. This has obviously been tough at times but having her home most of the time has given us some extra unexpected time together with me and her dad.
We've got so much done around the house!! Which has been brilliant for my urges to nest!
Q. YOU TALK OPENLY ABOUT HAVING A TRAUMATIC BIRTH WITH YOUR FIRST CHILD AND CONSEQUENTLY SUFFERING WITH PTSD/ANXIETY. HAS THIS BEEN PICKED UP IN YOUR APPOINTMENTS THROUGHOUT YOUR PREGNANCY?
At my initial booking appointment with the midwife, I was asked about my mental health. Luckily for me, I had the same midwife as last time, so she had some idea about the issues that happened with my last birth. This has been discussed at length and things have been put in place this time.
Q. HAVE THERE BEEN ANY ADDITIONAL THINGS PUT IN PLACE DUE TO THIS, E.G. EXTRA APPOINTMENTS, MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT?
I was given the choice to give birth at a different hospital to last time, to reduce the bad memories associated with the previous birth experience.
I was referred to a birth debrief clinic called Birth Thoughts, in this I was able to talk over my previous birth with an experienced midwife who helped me to understand what happened better and help me think forward to how things could be different this time.
Referral to specialist wellbeing midwife who has again validated my experiences and helped me to develop a birth plan and preferences for this time. I had around 3-4 extra appointments for this.
Referral to the Perinatal Mental health service. I have been sent information on managing PTSD symptoms and offered supportive phone calls during my pregnancy (the full choice of interventions has not been available due to COVID however)
Referral to the Perinatal Mental health service peer support group - Keeping Well. This includes a wellbeing pack delivered to my house and a 4 week group delivered on a 1 to 1 basis over the phone.
Referral made to a specialist breastfeeding member of staff, as i really struggled last time and know i will need support this time.
I have also put things in place myself this pregnancy which i did not before:
Looking into more holistic ways to support my wellbeing, I haven't done much! But it’s made a lot of difference. I’ve done an online hypnobirthing course which has taught me so much in terms of my choices and what to expect. I absolutely should have done this the first time round!
The hypnobirthing course encourages you to look into relaxation - I have relaxing aromatherapy bath oils and used them to have more baths - this has helped me unwind and has helped with the aches and pains. I have also invested in a good aromatherapy spray which I use to go to sleep and I will take into hospital with me for the birth.
I've done an online EFT (tapping course) which also addresses ways to reduce anxiety.
I've taken the time to do yoga most mornings (just a random youtube one for 30 mins!) and try to walk and move as much as possible.
I have taken a lot of time to look at my birth preferences with my partner and cover all the things that could happen during birth and what choices i would make.
Q. YOU’VE MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY THAT YOU LIVE IN WAKEFIELD BUT ARE GIVING BIRTH IN BARNSLEY – WERE YOUR NOTES TRANSFERRED BETWEEN AREAS OR DID YOU HAVE TO DO TWO DIFFERENT SETS OF NOTES AND THEREFORE TALK THROUGH YOUR HISTORY TWICE?
My notes were not transferred, i did have to go through everything twice, although i was warned about this by my community midwife and it was a choice i made knowing that. In preparation, I did request my previous birth notes from the hospital. This was a relatively simple process but it did take some weeks for them to get to me. This preparation i put into place myself is something i have been very conscious of this time round, i've felt like taking some control myself has been helpful. These notes were then very useful to show the midwives and other clinic staff I have encountered at appointments at the new hospital - so they had an idea of what I had been through previously.
Q. HAVE YOU BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND YOUR APPOINTMENTS FACE TO FACE OR HAVE THEY BEEN DONE ONLINE?
I found out i was pregnant in December 2019 so up until March when the lockdown started, all my appointments had been as normal and face to face, one of my last appointments was my 12 week scan with my partner, i feel so lucky he was able to come to this as i had to attend my 20 week one alone. I have since had a mixture of face to face and online/phone appointments. whilst pregnant you do still need to be seen in person; be examined and have blood and urine tests so this still has to be face to face, but you have to attend alone. Initially this was disconcerting but i think overall i feel stronger from doing this alone. My appointments with the specialist services have been over the phone or on zoom.
Q. HAS YOUR PARTNER BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND THE APPOINTMENTS WITH YOU?
As above.
Q. WHEN YOU ATTEND YOUR SCANS, ARE THEY DIFFERENT TO THE FIRST TIME? I’M THINKING ABOUT SOMEONE FEELING ANXIOUS ABOUT ATTENDING A SCAN AT THE MOMENT – FOR EXAMPLE ARE THE SONOGRAPHERS WEARING PPE EQUIPMENT? DO YOU HAVE TO WEAR A FACE MASK ETC?
The 20 week scan was certainly an anxiety provoking appointment and i wrote about this in detail on the last blog piece i did on our website. However the experience ended up being actually fine and not that different to a normal scan appointment really. you are called the day before the and asked if you have any COVID symptoms, i didn't have any, however i believe even if you do, they will still need to see you for the scan, but further protective measures are probably put into place. When i attended on the day, the hospital was so quiet which i found reassuring, the staff were in PPE but the only difference that was really obvious was the face masks, everyone seemed to sense the potential for the situation to cause anxiety and everyone was SO NICE :). I didn't have to wear any protective clothing, I was just asked to wash my hands with the sanitiser.
Q. WHAT INFORMATION HAVE YOU BEEN GIVEN ABOUT GIVING BIRTH DURING THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK? IS YOUR PARTNER ALLOWED TO ATTEND THE BIRTH?
The situation with lockdown and the virus is changing so fast, from week to week we have different information and the guidance feels like it's being constantly updated. Due to this, i haven't been told exactly what will happen at my birth, this will be in August and that is still a while away. I have educated myself by reading my hospital guidelines on their website and reading loads of positive birth stories online to give me an idea of what may happen. time scales may change, but i am expecting that my partner will not be able to be with me until i am in ‘established labour’. Roughly this will translate to being around 4cm dilated and with regular contractions. After this your partner can stay with you until the birth and then they can stay for a set amount of time afterwards, i think this is currently a couple of hours but this could change. Reading about other women who have been through this and absolutely bossed it has been so reassuring.
Q. IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD THAT YOU THINK WOULD BE USEFUL FOR A PERSON THAT IS CURRENTLY PREGNANT OR THINKING ABOUT GETTING PREGNANT?
I would highly recommend that everyone does an online hypnobirthing course, there are lots available and can be done during whatever lockdown conditions are put on us, in your own time and with your birth partner. I really wish i had done this the first time round. I think the name hypnobirthing can be misleading, the content of these courses covers all the medical stuff and educates you on your choices and your rights during birth. Knowledge really is power and has made me feel way more confident about what is to come.

TGIWednesday and a download for you, your pet & your environment
TGIWednesday News
I'm writing this intro for all those who only scroll to the bottom to read the comics in my e-newsletter lol. Also, because we've had a whole lot of new folks join the list lately from some recent fun summit appearances. Welcome everyone!! So if you get this in time and you’re in the middle of Florida, join us at the monthly Florida Dowsers Unlimited group meeting 4pm TODAY. Replay of weekly radio shows and upcoming schedule is below as well. I'm also highlighting several items and offerings that are some of THE most popular. We have our regular books and ebooks available in the shop. Also My Daily Prayer is also getting more and more popular with weekly success stories coming in that I share below. For MDP, at 3am daily I wake & begin praying for you, your loved one’s and work on fulfilling wishes, hopes and dreams! FYI it’s about 3 dollars a day, even less than Starbucks ;) We now have over 25 Clearing Audio MP3’s - on specific healing topics and we’re getting reading to launch a new one very soon on receiving Divine Abundance. That is a game-changer….just take a look at this email I received from an early listener just this morning...
"Soooooo, there has been so much abundance that I have not had time to get this to you, but finally, taking a breath and a moment of gratitude. As you know, I have been working 2 careers, simultaneously, for the last 5 years and have been contemplating quitting one of them for quite some time. The day I listened to your MP3, my boss of the least enjoyable of the 2 jobs, called out of nowhere to let me know that my remote position had been eliminated, and I was being laid off, effective immediately! This included good references and 10 weeks severance! Now, most people aren't happy to lose a job, but I was thrilled, as the decision was made for me, AND I was getting paid to leave. Now, I can focus on the more satisfying career, and have more time to enjoy life! I would recommend that EVERYONE HAVE A LISTEN TO THIS and THANK YOU, JIMMY!" - K.D. / Tampa
And for the ones who REALLY "get it" and want to dive even deeper, we've got our Certification Program. We list them here each week so just scroll down when you want to know more. We're glad you're here and joining in on this fishing boat party and know that things can and will get better and we love and appreciate you!

Tampa

Training Block - Feb - Strength
The days are numbered and we are just 8 training weeks away from an event you won't forget. The question is; how do you want to remember it - as the one you should have trained more for, or the glorious celebration of achievement, effort and willpower?
Moving on.
THIS IS IT, this block is really what will cement your base and multi-day training into a structured and honed race engine. Three weeks (followed by recovery) of high-intensity training to promote strength and power will leave you tired, possibly cranky, but stronger and ready for the final block.
Take the recommended sessions, drop them onto a calendar and in 3 weeks you'll be exhausted but stronger as a result.
You will need:
6 hours of training time - don't worry if this is less than last block, the change in intensity should account for that
4-5 training days with rest days in between - try not to do more than 2 days consecutively (it's likely to do more harm than good)
Very likely a turbo trainer or gym spin session(s)
Good hydration throughout
Good recovery protocol (i.e. carbs & protein in the first 30 min after riding)
Kind of goes without saying, but a balanced diet - i.e. reliable source of energy to support high intensity workouts
A good combination would be 3x short sessions with 1 or 2 longer sessions during the week interspersed with recovery days.
Recommended Short Sessions:
Hills
Warm up (10 min steady pace with 3 sprints at 110 rpm)
Find a local hill that you love
Aim for about 4min of climbing at strong pace (i.e. the effort should have you breathing through your mouth)
Once you've hit 4 min return to your start point (spinning quickly to flush Mr Lactic from your muscles), try to take 2-3 min over it - maybe rest at the bottom
Rinse and repeat at least another 4 times
Cool down (10 min)
Sprint Intervals (good for commutes)
Warm up (10 min steady pace with 3 full sprints at 110 rpm)
It can be useful to start a timer and sprint on a regular interval (like on the minute)
20s Full Gas sprint (don't worry about anything except fluid circular motion and trying to rip the pedals off) [P7, Z5, Perceived 10/10]
Recover for 40s [P1, Z2, Perceived 2/10]
Repeat for 4 more reps
Recover for 2-3 mins
Repeat the sprints - aim to do the set 4 times
Warm down
Safest to do this on the wind trainer
Optionally - you can switch out 20:40s for 30:30s (i.e. 30s sprint, 30s recovery) if you're feeling strong - these are probably twice as difficult so do this wisely.
Time Trial
There's a couple of places that this safe to do on the road (WMCC Liverton road circuit, Bits of North Miramar Peninsular), but as above it is safest to do on the wind trainer
Warm up for at least 15min (include 3-4 full gas sprints - 10s or so)
20min at Gas Mark Painful (i.e. heavy breathing, but still able to see straight) [P5, Z4/5, Perceived 7/10]
Cool down for at least 10 min
Longer Hill Reps
Good warm up (15 min or so)
You should aim for a 10min hill like Horokiwi or Blue Mountains at roughly time trial pace - i.e. you don't really want it to go on for another minute [P4, Z4, Perceived 7/10]
Recover on the way back down, wait / spin at the bottom for about 5min
Repeat again
Cool down for 10min
High-Intensity Trainer Sessions
Anything from the Sufferfest https://thesufferfest.com/ (except To Get To The Other Side and The Way Out)
Spin classes - Les Mills and other gyms offer these at very reasonable prices
Recommended Sessions to fit intensity into your Longer Steadier ride (LSD)
FTP Intervals
During your longer ride, you may have time to fit in some long-duration intervals which are great for supporting and training strength and long-duration power (FTP). If it's a group ride, maybe discuss the idea of 20min at med/high intensity before dropping your riding chums :) Though they can always catch you up.
Assuming you are already warmed up
20min at strong pace (i.e. the pace you could keep up for just 1 hour) [P5, Z4 eventually, Perceived 7/10]
Recover / let your group catch you up for at least 5 min before repeating
Aim for at least 2 of these long intervals in your ride
Fast climbing
If you can't fit a steady longer interval, when you hit a 5min climb aim to hit HR Z5 [Perceived 8/10] by the end of it - aim to do this at least 3 times during the ride - maybe add more hills to your long rides :)
Recovery Day options
Core
These exercises won’t exactly get you a six pack, but have a noticeable effect on your cycling performance (click on workout name for link):
Around the World – 10min
Strava / Fitstar Core Challenge (Strava Premium only) - 20 min
Iron Strength – more advanced (read difficult) - 50 min
Flex / Stretch
Yoga / Pilates - good options for improving general flexibility and stretching out muscles you didn’t know you had - providing you don’t mind the perception.
The Foam Roller (your muscles will thank you later) - I could go on about the foam roller, how it releases your fascia and works out knots and sore spots in your muscles, but I won’t - check out the following cycling specific exercises (click on title) and thank me later:
IT-Band
Quads
Adductors (aka the VMO)
Hamstrings
Note of caution (partly experienced-based)
High Intensity workouts can lead you into the dark world of over-training - how do you know? The following notes are geared around two possible outcomes of your training (too much or not enough)
Signs you're over doing it (Overtraining) If you get start seeing any of these, it's worth flagging this early.
Chronic fatigue
Confusion
Decreased strength
Depression
Frequent minor infections
Increased apathy and irritability
Headaches and tremors
Increased perceived exertion during a constant exercise load
Garmin Recovery Advisor is pretty good at identifying overtraining through imperceptible changes to your heart beat. If you have a Garmin look up this feature. Take extra rest days if you see any of these signs as chronic overtraining can severely damage your build up to The Tour.
Signs you're under-cooking it (Undertraining)
Feeling really fresh all the time - this is usually a sign you are recovered - fine if this happens during a recovery week, but if you're feeling like this in the middle of a training block then you might want to consider upping the intensity of what you are doing (perhaps meditate on Rule #5)
Short easy miles (i.e. less than 100km) - whilst there's nothing wrong with recovery riding per se, riding at low intensities regularly is unlikely to produce the improvements you are seeking. I'm not saying you need to smash every ride, but if you are training you will almost certainly need to break a sweat - it's ok to sweat it! Sadly, if commuting forms part of your weekly training, then you may need to adjust how you approach it - can you add a hill or steel yourself to some sprint intervals?
