It's kinda sad that a lot of the discourse around the scene where Uika contemplates pushing Mutsumi down the stairs is going to focus on this as an act driven by her fixation on Sakiko- it's a correct reading, of course, but it misses out on the fact that Wakaba Mutsumi is one of the most stair-tossable-characters ever?

I mean, everyone in Ave Mujica has to have fantasized about it once, right? It's not even about hatred. Just curiosity. Wouldn't you want to see what happens? Would Mutsumi just flop lifelessly down the stairs, landing in a silent heap of limbs and hair at the bottom? Would her supernatural instincts take over and switch instantly to an alter capable of absorbing the impact, letting her clamber to her feet all bruised and battered and scowl adorably up at you? Would it unlock a new adaptation, a form driven as she always has been by the pressure of the situation, a fresh aspect of this ever-changing beast? Or would it finally jar her into a spontaneous reaction, the shock of it all short-circuiting her instinctive calculation of the ideal way to conduct herself based on the expectations of others, that web of treacherous masks giving way at last to a moment of pure authenticity, of the sensation of the Real, the immovable, the fucking concrete?

You may think poorly of me for suggesting this. As if you never fantasized about breaking your dolls as a little girl, about pulling at their limbs to see when they'd snap, and wondering if they'd still be beautiful in their brokenness. But in the end, even if you lost your favourite doll, you'd move on like everyone else. That's what being an adult means. It's something that monstrous child has always understood. Pain would only help her grow. Broken bones are a rite of passage in this industry- far better than broken promises, I'd say. If you can't take the pain, then you shouldn't be here at all. But if that dreadful girl can't take it either, then perhaps there's something human still left in her. A pity, I suppose. But more chances for us to shine.
