one of the most interesting things about working at a big chain bookstore is seeing which books have been decreed by the elder gods at corporate to have become mainstream popular enough to shed their genre fiction cooties and get shelved in regular fiction

#for example: liane moriarty's books are shelved in fiction at my store even though they're really thrillers #susanna clarke's books also get shelved in fiction even though they're pretty firmly fantasy imo #and tia williams writes what i would consider romance but they get shelved in fiction #finally some of silvia moreno-garcia's books go in horror but mexican gothic gets put in fiction because it was a big hit #genres are all kind of fake but it's a little fascinating to me #also as a lover of genre fiction i'm always like booooo stop pretending this book only has literary value bc it's a bestseller #pie says stuff #my life #books #bookselling
