You never know GMs are thinking bc they’re mostly dumbasses, but trading away Mikko to make room for Mitch makes no sense?? Mikko is an insanely good player; he’s 6th in the league in points (3 points behind Mitch) and has great team chemistry. He’s also at the last year of his contract and was likely going to ask for a raise. Why would the Avs trade away a great RW with a contract expiring this year who is going to be paid $$$$ next year, for another exceptional RW whose contract is expiring this year and is absolutely going to get $$$$$$? Could they take a run at Mitch this summer? Sure. But why trade a (nearly) equitable player that has great chemistry with your 1C, and helped make that 1C the point leader in the league rn? Seems like more of a rebuild move, esp since Necas is a really good solid RW with a lower cap hit, who had to go into arbitration with the Canes and likely was okay with a trade.
i don't see anyone insinuating the avs (or anyone rlly) are taking a run at mitch tbh... it's more people seeing a team make a blockbuster move with their 1rw who wants to be paid as much or more than their star player and the gm deciding to put their foot down, but the difference was in the nmc. mikko just had a 9 team no trade list iirc and mitch has a full move. also mikko is the avs third best player and mitch is our second so it's a bit of a different thing, but ppl looking for any reason to be like here's why the leafs SHOULDNT extend mitch or should trade him (still ?? on why ppl think thats happenin or hed okay it). i also don't think mitch will surpass auston's aav even on a longterm deal (or if he goes short like auston ? idk where his head at there) but i bet it'll be closer than people want probably.
as for the avs.. idk i think they get worse with the move but they obviously weren't where they wanted to be money wise with mikko and didn't want to let him just walk for nothing so. necas i think has another year after this one, while mikko's basicslly a rental for a single run for carolina and then if it doesn't work they don't have to re-sign him. he'll make bank on the open market for sure. i totally do not know why the hell chicago was part of that deal at all unless they were just dying to get rid of hall for some reason but LOL. ultimately i think carolina won that one in an attempt to shake up their roster for some real talent to get them over the hump but i also hear there's more on the way for colorado so we will stay tuned... kinda wishing for both the avs and canes downfalls so i dont REALLY care how it all tursn out but just having a blockbuster to discuss is exciting
