hi jade! ive seen your art and i just wanna say that i love it so much, they’re some of my favorites that ive ever seen and they bless my eyes each time i do πŸ˜πŸ’› i want to ask as a fellow artist myself, though, how do you deal with unsolicited advice/criticism from other people? :0
OMG???????????????
wait this is so sweet omg thank you so much!!!! im gonna treasure this for eternity seriously this means a lot that youd think about my art ^^
hmm yeah,, god unsolicited criticism can be so annoying, but advice on the other hand is really dependent when theyre trying to be helpful; but even then, it really is about the tone they use with you and questioning the intent on them genuinely trying to help you or not
so when it comes to criticism that we didnt really ask for, i tend to try to shrug it off and continue doing my thing for a while...then try to reflect on why they said that, and apply that criticism.
don't get me wrong, it is normal to feel bad about criticism!! i overthink everything as i receive them, and i admit i dwell on it for a while thinking im like the worst artist ever. it stings especially if its worded harshly. but later down the line, i start to unconsciously take that criticism and apply it to make my art better.
imo no matter what type of criticism you get, it has some form of value. even if they point out the worst things about your art, you still find some desire to fix it to avoid those comments. and in result, i managed to improve, even if its just a little bit.
its just a matter of deciding whether you're going to take that criticism or not. for example, some people may think my art is too bright or colorful, but i deny that criticism because i feel like my colors identify who i am as an artist. if they point out anatomical issues, it hurts oh boy it hurts...but i accept it because i do agree i need to improve on my anatomy.
so yeah, that's how i personally take it, and i hope that helps you out!
HOWEVER. this isnt an invitation for people to start randomly throwing criticisms at artists; even if its constructive! dont be a douche, save your words ONLY when they actively ask for feedback.
and when it comes to the 'how', give both warm and cold comments; point out the things you loved about the piece and then move on to things that could have been approached better. this doesnt just go for art, this could go for written works as well.
remember that creatives are also human beings who just want to create art for the world and themselves. so, the least we could do is respect that.
