This was the hardest monthly wrap up I ever had to do because I forgot about it until like two days ago and my brain is not at its best and I'm tired so I can't really write a lot. So anyway as usual, spoilers and opinions below, read at your own risk.

QL - Currently Watching

🇹🇼 Blue Canvas of Youthful Days [2/12] - I really like the look of this show and all the art. I'm not yet sold on the main couple as a possible item but I really like the characters individually. I adore the second couple. The scene with the hearing aid was beautiful and I like the fact that it's not about the couple. Perhaps in a bl from a different country this would be about them finally being able to communicate, but because Liu knows sign language, it's simply about helping Tan Yin. Don't know why but I really liked this.

🇰🇷🇹🇭 Eccentric Romance [8/12] - It's not the worst thing ever but at several points during the episodes I find myself asking, what am I watching?

🇹🇭 Every You, Every Me [4/8] - This show constantly surprises me. The different stories every week and the aspec rep was how they got me at first but now I'm invested in the meta and the absolutely adorable mains. And this show is just so gorgeous to watch.

🇹🇭 Fourever You [5/16] - Beautiful Pond. Cute Earth. I'm annoyed. Hopefully the next couple is better in terms of storyline.

🇹🇭 Jack & Joker [8/12] - Can they just get together first and then give me all the drama? I'm okay with that. I actually liked Love Mechanics, so give it to me. But Jack is all over the place with his behaviour, he says Joke is family and they seem to have a shared view of the future, and they sure behave as if they're a couple, but then he hides things from Joke, supposedly 'for his own good'. I feel for Joke, because he's being jerked around by Jack.

🇹🇭 Kidnap [8/12] - I love Ohm. And that is the one and only reason I'm still here.

🇰🇷 Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo [6/8] - I'm obsessed. I think about this show way too much. It's painful and beautiful, brilliant writing and visuals and I need it to be over but I don't want it to end. I think we're gonna have a second time skip since they are not in our present yet and I just want to see them happy.

🇰🇷 Love in the Big City [4/8] - Obsessed in a total different way. This story is like an open tab in my brain at all times. I'm dreaming of edits and gifsets. I think of Young and my chest tightens. I'm having a hard time writing about the second part of the show because it's just so much, although it feels lighter than the novel. I'm dreading the next part.

🇯🇵 Love is a Poison [7/10] - I love it here. Everything about it. This being Shiba's first love sure explains a lot, and the onsen date was amazing. I think the actors are nailing this.

🇹🇭 Peaceful Property [10/12] - I've said enough about it. I'm here for TayNew and trying to just ignore everything else.

🇹🇭 Perfect 10 Liners [1/24] - And so it begins. Every gmmtv boy is here and they are all playing engineers. They got two Flukes and everything. I wish Force wasn't once again an asshole jock and Book the clueless fool but I guess that's too much to ask. This is the couple I'm least interested here so I want to see the rest.

🇹🇼 See Your Love [3/13] - Taiwan just doing giving all the rep with disabled characters and as usual a parade of bl actors. It's fine for now.

🇯🇵 Smells like Green Spirit [6/9] - I love Mishima. I think the scenes with him and Kirino are always great. I'm still not totally on board with the romance but I'm somewhat fascinated with Yumeno.

🇹🇼 First Note of Love - I feel like I need to rewatch this as a binge because I think this format didn't help this particular show. Although I like the mains and I really liked the actors, their romance never truly clicked for me. I need more of the sides. The language banter was my favourite thing about this.

Three months was a long time. You did not expect it to feel that unpleasant but now that you were standing in front of the arrival terminal at the airport even the seconds that passed seemed unbearable. Everything slowed down, you kept checking your phone hoping for a sign of life from Will but nothing came. The screen on the wall was displaying all the landings and his plane was discharged. He could be here at any moment but the more people passed in front of you the more your heart raced at the absence of signs from his little curly-haired head.

Anxious, you started to roam into the small room to calm your nerves down. You did not hear about any kind of accident, he was surely fine, maybe stuck at customs. Yeah, he was probably fine but your mind could not calm down until you saw a short figure burst into your direction, Will rushing to you the second he noticed you.

Not expecting him after all this wait you awkwardly opened your arms, Will settling himself between them as he hugged you tightly, lifting you in a quick motion.

-God, I missed you. He squeezed you even harder, his head losing itself in the crook of your neck.

You hugged him back, taking time to appreciate his scent that you missed so much, murmuring a quick "Me too" as you let go in his embrace.

Eventually, after some point, you tried to let go of him, the rest of the band just behind him. Still, he did not separate himself from you, his arms still strongly surrounding your waist as he hugged you from behind, swinging you from left to right, his head resting on your shoulder.

-Will, you'll have to let go of me if you want to go home one day.

You joked, half-joked actually, and you heard Austin make fun of you in the back.

-Yeah, do you guys plan to make out in the middle of the hall or can we go?

Will groaned when you started to shift in his arms, unhappily freeing you so he could go grab his bag and follow your steps.

Still, he followed you closely everywhere, his hand on your lower back as you all tried to somehow carry the bags to the car. The rest of the guys were a few steps ahead, letting you have some intimacy as they knew that Will could just bark at them for cock blocking him. Well, they weren't cock blocking anything since you guys were definitely not going to have sex now but in Will's head it was in a way.

His lips tried to kiss your temple while you walked through the airport, which was incredibly difficult but it did not make him back up. He was maybe short but he had a strong will, desperately looking for some contact with you.

You proposed to drive the guys home but they all declined, telling you that they could deal with that themselves. Giving some kind of pressing look to Will as they silently told you that he wouldn’t let it go.

So eventually each one of them got back to their house mysteriously.

Will seemed to have calmed down a bit in the car, his hand rested on your knee as you drove his tired figure back home.

But once you got to the front door of your house Will immediately attached himself back to you, lifting you off your feet as he slammed the door open, immediately throwing you on the couch with him, his head dipping again in your neck.

You sighed gently, brushing your fingers through his tangled hair. Will humming against your skin.

-Alright lover boy, are you going to let me breathe or not?

-Fuck no, I'll suffocate you.

You chuckled and he hugged you harder, his lips looking for your urgently.

The rest of the evening went the same way. Will's weight was heavy on you as his head rested on your stomach, both of you lying down. You, focusing on one of your books and Will, focusing mindlessly on his phone. He kept glaring at you every other minute, hoping for a move from you but you only continued to read, enjoying the peaceful evening as his body was heating yours. It was much better than all these lonely and cold nights you spent lately.

Getting impatient, Will moved his head to fully look at your face, his pointy chin stabbing your stomach.

-Looooove. He called dramatically to finally earn a look from you.

You smiled at him, one of your hands leaving your book to stroke his hair again, knowing how much he liked it.

-Yes? Your voice was as soft as the look you were giving him, waiting for him to continue his speech.

-Come on is the book really that great? You've been on it for hours!

You looked back to the paper between your hands, considering his sentence for a few seconds.

-Yes. Just to tease him a little you ignored his presence again, your eyes focusing on the pages in front of you as your hand abandoned his hair.

You heard him groan and it made you hide your chuckle. He was really so easy to get.

So just for a bit, you continued to read, totally ignoring Will's protests on your stomach. Well, at least you tried. But with the time he got slightly more pressing. The hands he had under your body came to grab your waist, passing through your shirt as he lifted it a little, his lips peppering kisses on your belly's skin.

Pulling you under him he finally made you look away from your book, receiving an arched brow as you were now at the same height, his face just above yours.

-Come on what is this? He pushed your book down, looking at the title. This sucks, why are you reading it?

You bit the inside of your cheek, trying to conceal another smile.

-It does not suck. It's a great book, you should read some sometimes you know.

-Yeah right, I'm sure you'll be pleased when I'll ignore you for some kind of... He paused, frowning at the cover. What is it? Faerie porn again?

This time you couldn't refrain your laughter at his visibly confused and upset expression.

-It is not porn! You tried to defend yourself but it was too late, Will had made up his mind.

-It better not be because I'll be really offended. He pouted his face leaning to yours in hope for a kiss.

He groaned at you again but settled down for a bit, his head now resting on your chest, making you raise your arms to be able to read something.

But when you thought he had given up he started to call you every few minutes. "Have you finished?", "And now?", "Still not done?", "Come on the chapter is a hundred pages or what?".

You sighed, gently hitting the top of his head with the hardcover.

-It would be faster if you just shut up.

His eyes widened and he stood up, surprising you.

-Fuck it. You're not reading this anymore.

Ripping the book from your hands he threw it on the floor in the second, making it hit the ground in a loud muffled sound.

-Nooo my page!

-Don't care, you should have been faster.

At these words he threw himself back on you, his hands finding your waist again. Lowering your gaze you stared at him while he leaned on, kissing you gently.

-You had three months to read, now the book can go to hell. I don't care.

He continued his motions, his lips lowering themselves to kiss your jaw and then your neck. Quickly your hands found their way back to his hair, as usual.

12 hours left:

A slice of pie from the seedy diner tucked between 2 manufacturing plants, one of your favorite ways to pass a sleepless night. Tonight you take extra time, savoring each bite, memorizing it's flavors and textures. There's almost a ceremony to it, which is fitting, given it's the last thing you'll eat. Your instructions where to stop all food 12 hours before. Not for your own safety, but because they're worried about the merchandise. The waiter bot and a few weary night shift workers are your only company, though truth be told you'd rather be alone.

6 hours remaining:

After your trip to the diner, you figure some sleep would do you good, but after laying in bed for another 4 hours, you finally give up just as the sun starts to peak between the tall buildings. With 6 hours remaining, you spend some time tidying up your small apartment, boxing up things you'll no longer need. Dishes, toiletries, what little food remains in the fridge. All of it won't be needed after tonight. The dishes and toiletries get left outside with a free sign, and the food goes to the lovely old lady next door.

2 hours:

An hour of pacing followed by a short walk to the processing facility. Once you're in the door you're inundated with paperwork. A signature here, initials here. Fingerprints there, surprisingly, a drop of blood and a video recording. You knew what to expect but it's still somewhat overwhelming. This isn't the first time you've sold your body, though this time it's not metaphorical. Among the ruling class, organs and body parts are in short supply, which means they can be bought and sold for a premium. Metal, polymers, and electronics aren't in short supply though, so this won't be the end for you. In fact, this is just the beginning.

1 hour:

They let you inspect your new chassis. A newer technican class model with all the bells and whistles: a fission powerplant, rapid swap tooling, enough sensors to put a super computer to shame all wrapped up in a sleek, chrome form with polymer paneling to give you a more lifelike appearance, for your comfort and everyone elses. Yours of course has some modifications, arms and legs that can adapt to quadrapedal movement, and a tail. Not uncommon requests according to the facility administrators. You sign one final form, approving the chassis and confirming for the 5th, maybe 6th time, that you're consenting to the procedure.

A flood of information flashes through your mind, has how long has it been? Days? Hours? Seconds? It doesn't take long before you realize exactly how long it's been, at least since you came online. The wave of new information comes again, overwhelming your ability to process, then your additional processing units come online and everything comes into perfect focus. All the online sensors become clear streams of information, you slowly test your actuators despite their slow speed they appear to all be functional. Everything feels so foreign yet so familiar. Your body is no longer human but your brain remains, in perfect harmony with the machine that makes up your body.

You see a body being wheeled away, your body. No. It's no longer yours, sent off to be repurposed to support some wealthy persons chase for immortality. Per the agreement, your new chassis and 10 thousand credits as trade for the imperfect flash you used to occupy.

Negative 1 year:

Like many others, it took weeks to get used to your new chassis. You spent 4 days at the facility getting used to moving around and interacting with the environment without crushing things or people. It only took one night home before you missed your nightly pie ritual so you went to the diner and just sat, watching, observing, and learning.

We chose Monza to do the grand reveal because we couldn't think of any place that has better Piarles history - and that's what this fanweek is going to be all about. Celebrating Piarles, and all their gorgeous history, and everything that they are. ❤️

How is this event going to work?

If you've ever participated in a ship week/fanweek before, then this will work exactly the same as that! We've created a list of seven Piarles-themed prompts, one for each day of the event, and the idea is that everyone creates a little something inspired by each prompt to post on its specific day.

1016 Week will run from the 10th to the 16th (🥰) October 2023. Creation time starts as soon as you've got your prompts - which is to say, as soon as you finish reading this post!

FAQs about participating in Beauty and the Beast Week 2024

Beauty and the Beast Week 2024 is starting soon! Here are answers to some questions I’ve gotten or that you may be wondering about before participating in the event:

Can I join?

Yes! This is an open event with no sign-ups. You don’t need to notify me or get my permission. Everyone is welcome.

Do I have to do something for every one of the prompts?

No! Just one is fine. You can do more if you wish, or multiple works for the same prompt, but none of this is necessary. The list of prompts is here.

Do I have to write about the specific plants in the prompts?

No! They are meant to be metaphorical and spark inspiration. Go with the vibe that the plant suggests to you. Some suggestions are shown on the prompt list, but you can interpret each plant however you wish. And if you do wish to depict one of the literal plants in your work, that’s fine too!

What should I do if my work doesn’t fit with any of the prompts?

That’s what day 7, the free day, is for! Anything goes, that day (provided you still follow the rules, of course!).

Do I have to create my art/fic/whatever on the day itself?

No! That would be super hard to do—I’m not that mean! Create it now, and just hold off on posting it until the day of the prompt you used.

Does my fic/art need to take place in the Disney BatB universe, or are AUs allowed?

As long as you have at least one Disney Beauty and the Beast character, you can stick them in whatever universe you wish. Make Belle a mermaid in a pirate AU, make Gaston an astronaut in a space AU, give Cogsworth and Lumiere a meet-cute at a coffee shop, or just keep everyone in the canon-compliant universe of the film. Anything goes!

Can I include non-BatB characters in my creations?

Sure! As long as you have at least one Disney Beauty and the Beast character, you can include whatever other characters you wish. Characters from other media, OCs, reader inserts, they’re all fine. And remember that there is no bashing of others’ characters or ships! Accounts that do so will get blocked. Review the full list of rules here.

Can I make [fill in the blank]?

Yep. Any type of fanwork you can dream up is welcome, not just fic and art. Crochet a Beast hat and post a pic of it, make a photo montage of yourself doing cosplay, make a music video, we love it all!

Is NSFW allowed?

Yes, with any sort of content and kink you like, but since there may be minors following this account, please tag it appropriately. If posting mature content directly on Tumblr rather than AO3, also use its community labels function and/or hide the content under a “keep reading” link. BESTIE can you tell me more about your lovely lady Jo I like her a lot....

IM SOOOOOO FUCKING GLAD YOU ASKED so she’s like technically an SCP OC tho we’re not suuuper connected to that universe it’s more of a vessel to tell our story but she’s this middle aged lesbian who is PAST her prime. She never had a prime. This is a cringe woman. She’s like on the millennial gen x cusp and it’s like painfully obvious. She is not a cool woman. She hasn’t even really talked to a girl other than her sister since high school. She’s got no friends. She works a minimum wage job and then goes home to her little house she took from her elderly mom after her mom got moved to 24/7 care (Jo doesn’t visit her btw)

And then one day she wakes up with a ton of weird symptoms. They persist for weeks. She goes to a doctor. They have her take a pregnancy test even though she tries to explain to them she can’t Possibly be pregnant. It comes back positive. She takes several more. She is super pregnant. She panics. She assumes the worst. She cannot fathom how this could have happened. More tests are done. She gets an ultrasound done. There’s no baby. Every pregnancy test comes back positive. She experiences every symptom of pregnancy. Her body is reacting as if there is a baby. But there’s just no baby. Her womb is empty.

For a really long time she tries to find an answer. Doctors don’t take her seriously. They assume she has an extreme case of Pseudocyesis. They blame it on her parental problems. She sees therapists. Nothing helps, and she continues to appear more and more pregnant until her body stops at around the 7th month mark.

Eventually she gives up and for Four Years she exists in a body that is 7 months pregnant until eventually her case gets brought to a doctor who has ties to the SCP foundation and they immediately clock her as something anomalous. The foundation gets involved.

The SCP foundation sends in Agent Ainsley ( @ericka-the-worm ‘s character, If you were wondering) to pick her up. He’s a high level agent in the foundation. He’s well trusted to do an easy job like this. Except Ainsely has just come back from forced leave after his spouse, another agent at the foundation, was killed by an SCP. He’s freshly traumatized and his grief has made him angry. The sound of a lamp crashing on the ground when he breaks into her home sends him into a full on PTSD induced panic attack which he believes was not just a sign that he wasn’t ready to come back to work, but instead a mental attack from Jo, who he believes is a far more dangerous SCP than she’s letting on and able to manipulate his mind.

The foundation believes Ainsley and puts Jo in maximum containment. She’s left unattended for days. The isolation drives her crazy. She has been abducted from her home with no explanation and now sits in a silent white room every second of the day. She tries her best to stay sane but it’s near impossible. She deals with constant hallucinations and delusions. That’s when a scientist is assigned to her case. Doctor Zephyr Salem ( @kennydennys )

Dr Salem is driven by only one thing: knowledge. They learn very quickly that Ainsley’s report of Jo wasn’t accurate. And they are very easily attached to Jo for how interesting she is, both as an SCP, and as a human woman who has been driven out of her mind.

Jo IMMEDIATELY attaches to Salem as the only person who she’s in contact with. Finally being able to talk to another person and have a connection to the outside world, she relies on them, and believes them completely when they say they want to help her with her condition and eventually free her from containment.

Jo feels that she’s already been saved by Salem, because she finally has someone to talk to after being in isolation for so long. But the SCP foundation is Salem’s place of work, and Salem has to clock out eventually. They can’t stay with her all the time, and she still spends most of her time completely alone. She continues to get worse. Salem tells Jo that things won’t be like this forever, and she’ll get to leave some day. But in reality Salem has no real intention of ever letting their most interesting case yet leave them.

Dreaming Spanish, Paper of 1200 hours learning French only watching shows, Personal Notes

So I signed up for Dreaming Spanish's site yesterday. However: it quickly became clear I have absolutely no time for studying something on top of Japanese and Chinese so. I will not get to use it much.

The good: their website is very nice, I think. The free videos are listed, and part of all collections, and they can track on the website how many minutes/hours you've watched and skip videos you've watched before if you wish. Meaning if you're using DS videos to study, going on their site is useful if you watch on a computer or phone, because their site will track your minutes watched for the day and put on a playlist for you for your language level. So it requires much less navigation and keeping track from you compared to the youtube site. I am super bad at tracking time doing X and what video I was on in youtube, so these features are awesome. It also tells you how many days it will take to reach each study level they have.

I think this is a super good tool to keep you realistic, and accountable to your own personal goal. If you only set your goal on DS to the learner option of 30 minutes a day (do NOT set it to 15 minutes a day), then you're looking at hitting goals at these points: you'll know 1500 words in 299 days, you'll know 5,000 words in 1,199 days (~3.3 years), and you'll be level 7 comparable to a native speaker in 2,999 days ~8.2 years). As you can see... 8.2 years is comparable to maybe if you took Spanish all through elementary school for 30 minutes a day (if that elementary school spanish was an immersion class). Now, languages take years to learn no matter what, and sometimes it will just have to look like 8 years for you (I'm studying Japanese and definitely getting close to that lol, and if I only had 30 minutes to study I'd obviously have to settle with the pace I can do). But if you study 2 hours a day, you can make a huge amount of progress in just 2 years (see below).

If you set it to 120 minutes per day (2 hours, like I tend to recommend for decently paced progress) then you'll know 1,500 words in 75 days (great progress from absolute beginner to able to start doing basic graded readers and learner podcasts if you want, and about where I got to when self studying in Chinese in the first few months), you'll learn 5,000 words in 300 days (less than a year!) at which point slow native speakers talking and books for children should be understandable (and shows will almost be without any word lookups, easier shows like cartoons and daily life romance may be). That's AMAZING progress for less than a year. I know for an English speaker, learning French or Spanish takes less time to understand... but I forgot how much less time. I guess my Chinese progress was only a little slower but I did a lot of 4+ hour study days the first year. And you'd get to DS Level 2 comparable to a native speaker in 750 days (just over 2 years).

That's a perfectly snappy progression, to be honest with you. People complain that comprehensible input lesson plans/ALG plans take 1500-2000 hours (DS takes 1500 hours), but the Foreign Service institute suggests 750 hours in class for Spanish then another 750 outside of class study, which is 1500! Same time period FSI suggests. For Thai it recommends 1100 class hours and 1100 out of class study, which is 2200 hours. So the CI lesson plans/ALG plans take about as much time as FSI estimates it takes their learners, the difference appears to be that ALG plans just do NOT include in any outside time spent studying. (A note: Dreaming Spanish does suggest doing lots of listening outside of their materials, but gives you the option to log that time on their site, so I am guessing outside listening you understand the meaning of would count toward their hours required of study).

Anyway, back to my point about Dreaming Spanish's tracking: I deeply appreciate how it shows you the goal study time per day you set, how much you're actually reaching it (so you know if it's unrealistic for you), and how long the milestone goals of understanding should take if you study at your goal study time per day. I think this tool on their site is incredibly useful. And even the Levels area on it's own, listing hours to get to each level and what you should be able to do at it, is quite good as a guide for what you should expect as a language learner.

Their guide matches up fairly well with what I could do in French, Chinese, and Japanese at various levels, very well. I read earlier and watched shows earlier than the guide suggests - I started when I was between level 2 and level 3 (so when I knew between 300-1500 words... I usually start graded readers ASAP so I started Chinese graded readers at 500 words studied, and with Japanese I waited longer than usual and read them at 1500-2000 words but read manga before that ToT, with French I started graded readers at 300 words and normal reading material at 1500 words... but also keep in mind, I was looking words up whereas the DS method does NOT suggest you look any words up, so me looking words up likely made harder materials like novels and shows understandable at an earlier point). And I found French reading material readable with no dictionary around level 4 (far earlier than DS suggests native speaker reading material being doable), I found Chinese shows understandable without word lookups earlier for me around level 4 (earlier than DS suggests - but I tolerate ambiguity okay and am Great at guessing new things from context, it's my favorite way to learn).

Semi Related things:

I read a whole paper a man wrote about learning French entirely through shows for 1200 hours, then an additional 300 hours of talking to people in French, a little grammar conjugation table reading and wikipedia in french reading and comic reading, and taking the B1 and B2 test and passing at the conclusion of 1500 hours. I recommend reading it if interested, I found it fascinating. The man looked up NO WORDS AT ALL in the first 1200 hours. The man did not pre-study much, he did not even know French was not spelled phoenetically much until 1200 hours in when he finally saw the writing system. He switched to watching cartoons a couple hundred hours in, because he could figure out new word meanings much faster with the direct visual context for what characters said (compared to shows for adults having discussions of things not happening on screen), and switched to shows for adults later once his vocabulary rose. (*Note: I did something similar with Chinese, I started with action wuxia because they would say 'get her/grab it/kick him/run/fight me/she's X' and I could learn a LOT of verbs and nouns by guessing instead of having to look up words every minute, back in that early point... action shows generally do more describing of whats actually on screen happening, and then comedic romance daily life shows, if you don't want to watch cartoons). His experience was brutal, he watched 5 hours on average a day, paid attention and made concious guesses of new words and features. It worked though!

And it is a great point to use as comparisons. His method worked, so the ALG/CI method type lessons should work as they are also 'watching audio visual' stuff in the language. While also being LESS exhausting than what this man did, since the ALG/CI lessons are structured to make it much easier to figure out new word meanings without as much uncertainty, are spoken slower to be understandable to learners, and are designed to teach you specific vocabulary and grammar.

He mentioned in his method, that if he were to do it again, he thinks he'd make faster progress if he'd allowed himself to 1. watch with French subtitles (to work on reading skill at the same time as listening), and 2. to look up words meanings to compare with the guesses he was making so he could quickly confirm correct meanings and move on.

I personally, based on my own experience, think he was somewhat right in thinking this and ALSO somewhat wrong. What I think is true about his guess that looking up words would've sped up the process: I know it does, I learned 2000 Chinese words in 6 months, then another thousand at least in the next 6 months, and while I cram studied an SRS app for 2 weeks (and 2 review) I think the bulk of reinforcement of remembering was me watching shows and confirming word guesses by looking up key words. If I'd done zero SRS app, and just watched shows from day 1, I would've looked up 1 keyword per minute at first probably. And it would've got me a similar pace of progress. I learned all my Chinese vocab after that first SRS app cram, by looking words up as I read or watched stuff. It definitely sped up progress. In French, I took 6 months to get where that guy got in 1 year... I was reading instead of listening mind you (and listening seems harder), but looking up words sped up my ability to comprehend more faster.

I think his assumptions about watching with French subtitles were wrong though: I think while subtitles DO help with reading (helped my Chinese reading a ton), I think (especially with similar alphabet languages - if you know another language uses that alphabet too) seeing the written form gives your brain more space to sub-vocalize the WRONG pronunciation mentally. You tend to prioritize reading subs over hearing actual dialogue, and so also I think you'll fail to develop the skill of parsing real muddled and slurred and muffled and sped up together language as fast as learners who do NOT use subtitles. When I watch Chinese shows without subtitles I have a noticeably more difficult time parsing what's said, and when I watch audio dramas and audiobooks I feel a whole comprehension level Lower than I feel when reading a book. I'm years into studying and specifically working on my ability to parse speech with no reading aid, so that's what only watching with subtitles did for me lol. (Also in French, I can't comprehend listening anywhere close to how well I can read, but that's more of an example of "what happens if you study primarily through reading and ignore listening skills"). So I think while practicing reading and seeing the spelling of new words IS useful (especially if you desire to train reading skill), it's also useful to spend at least SOME time watching shows or listening to audio with no subtitles or transcript to rely on... to practice parsing the sounds.

I did find it interesting he picked up reading so quickly, after all the work on listening. I had personally hoped, that learning to read things you already know in listening, might be easier to do than learning to read Brand New words. Based on his experience, this seems true. And I'm hoping I can eventually do something similar with Japanese... have a listening skill above my reading skill, and then work on reading (but either way I plan to use reading-listening at once, so even if there's new words in reading I don't want to develop a totally wrong pronunciation guess in my head).

And then, a note about Dreaming Spanish and my personal experience with Spanish: When I actually watch the Dreaming Spanish videos, it's the Intermediate Level videos that feel correct for me - I hear some new words and can understand/guess them in the context of the video, they speak at a pace I find understandable, they're not so boring I want to tune out, they're not so difficult I feel exhausted (interestingly when I checked out Lazy Chinese the intermediate level feels easier than this but a comfortable 'easier' spot for listening skills, and Comprehensible Japanese's intermediate videos feel a bit more focus-intensive for me than Dreaming Spanish's but also provide the right amount of new stuff to learn in context). I would assume knowing some French helps A TON with comprehending Spanish, and I have read several Spanish nonfiction books and don't find trouble with nonfiction (fiction Spanish books have enough unknown words though that I do need to look things up). I did also read Madrigal's Magical Key to Spanish self-study book back in college, and do a few months of Language Transfer Spanish podcast, so I saw a couple thousand cognates and basic grammar rules from those.

Anyway... I just find it curious that the actual content Dreaming Spanish has, I don't feel Superbeginner matches me despite being a beginner overall. The Superbeginner videos do have new words for me (tall, old, eyes, head, nose, hand), with context they're immediately understandable of course. Then also: some of them sound just like French to me or like words I've heard before. Garden is jardin, like french. Apprend is learn, like french.

Another interesting thing I noticed... some Spanish accents are easier for me to parse than French. I'm not super surprised, because that summer I was focusing on Spanish in college on my own, the goal was to MAKE IT SOUND DIFFERENT than French in my head, because mentally I'd confuse spanish and french when reading. I succeeded and developed a better ear for Spanish, and a slightly better ear for French (but clearly not as much as Spanish now that I'm hearing Spanish and parsing words better than I do in French). There's a few Spanish accents that feel almost as difficult as French to parse - the JARDIN video accent, with J like a Y but a way different Y sound than the French jardin threw me off a lot. The dropping of certain letters pronunciation also confused me... I think Spanish maybe does some ll sounds as y/i sound, so maybe that's what I heard? And the 'th' sound instead of s, my ears struggled with but I was more aware to look out for that in Spain pronunciation.

Then again, who knows how much my knowledge of French was simply interfering with Spanish: making a lot of cognates way easier to understand, but making certain pronunciations harder to parse. That could be both what helped and what makes things more confusing to me.

I have no time to study Spanish or French right now, so I can't really dive into what kind of work it would take to separate French and Spanish more in my head (but apparently they do need to be more firmly separated...still, in pronunciation). But it was interesting to see that effect.

26 July, NYY @ BOS, 7-9, win

Quite delightful to trade the shitty rollercoasters of misery for the terrifying rollercoaster of awesome that seemed doomed but it all turns out triumphantly ok. It was a wild ride. There wasn’t a hint of smooth sailing. No lead was safe for either team. Aaron fucking Judge hit the farthest Fenway home run I’ve ever witnessed to put the Skanks in the lead (turns out it was the fourth farthest ever recorded - I find it upsetting and irksome that there’s a skank in the top five and please feel free to not inform me if there’s more than one). Once again two bullpen stalwarts got tagged for a bunch of runs. That’s going to happen. It sucks but it happens. BUT… and this is important… we fuckin’ won anyway. The lineup did their job and it was fucking great, especially after that shitty road trip and the elation of Cora signing the contract extension, to come back and give the institutionally arrogant Yankees a smack was just delightful. As such, there are plenty of bright sides.

Brayan Bello was solid again. Another no decision but he went five, gave up five hits, three runs, struck out 4 and walked one. Really would like this improvement to continue, because I’m sure this kid can dominate.

Kenley Jansen scared us a bit, giving up a couple of hits in the ninth, but he saved the day, the night and got the save. And the lucky dude got to skip that nightmare in Denver. Welcome back, closer. And thanks for having the goods when we need you most (against the Skanks).

Ceddanne Rafaela, as well as playing strong short stop, brought the Sox back into the game with a bang, knocking a two-dinger over the Monster and onto Lansdowne with a remarkably confident swing, the sort of swing that leaves no doubt as to the intent and expect result. He looked like he knew it was going out before he even made contact. It was thrilling. It was awesome, and it set Fenway off like a powder keg. More than made up for his two strike outs.

Masa Yoshida also played the total hero, coming up huge in the 8th to put the Sox ahead with a two-run single. He’d already put the Sox ahead with a sac fly in the fifth. Makin’ stuff happen.

Rob Refsnyder, smasher of baseballs, went 3-for-4 with 2 runs scored, a run batted in, a walk, and generally getting shit done.

Wilyer Abreu came up big pinch hitting for Tyler O’Neill (who’s been super hot) in the eighth and tying the game by smacking in a double to score the aforementioned Rob Refsnyder.

Tyler O’Neill was remarkably gracious after being pulled for Abreu and cheered the loudest when he smacked that run in.

Raffy Devers was treated with kid gloves by the Skanks, who walked him twice but he still managed to go 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

Honestly - that’s a game worth watching again, or at least the condensed version. So dramatic, so fucking exciting.

I love looking at my art from the start of the year and then looking at my latest piece. Or my first iPad/procreate drawing and then my latest piece. It's like, wow. I can't believe I've improved in so many ways in such a somewhat short period of time !

Back in February or March I wouldn't have dreamt of even TRYING to do lineless art, but now here I am almost 7 or 8 months later doing lineless art every other day because it's fun. This feels like one of those twitter posts but honestly dude it's so fun and brings me so much joy seeing how much I've changed in way of doing my art. I've gotten so much BETTER and my art has had things both added and taken from it to give it a charm that I think suits it. Like adding textures over the colour layers, or adding lines of a darker multiply colour to my shading because it looks nice

I love doing art. It's one of my favourite pastimes. It's such a wonderful experience even if I struggle.

When I look at them, I can see the difference so clearly. My lines feel much smoother, and less sketchy, unlike how they were back when I was drawing in early - late 2021. My shading has gotten a bit better, and I no longer just Airbrush.

In general, in so so SO many little ways, I've improved to such a big extent. I've dove into things I didn't think I would. I tried lineless art, I tried Pixel Art, I drew SCENES USING SAID PIXEL ART BECAUSE I GOT FIXATED AND BECAUSE IT WAS FUN

Art is FUN. It's something to enjoy. It's something to look at and think "wow ! This is great, but boy have I improved!"

When I see my works from when I was younger I cringe. When I see my old iPod drawings, I cringe. But that's ok ! It's ok to be "cringe", it's ok to think your stuff is "cringe". It's ok to do something that people may deem as "Cringe", so long as it's FUN

Art can be cringe, but GOD can it be free.

Okay so pre-reborn and rejuv events both of the them lived in Oblivia (region where the game Pokemon Ranger: Guardian Signs takes place)

When Chad was young (let's say around 7 years old) his house was set on fire and his parents and sibling died while he survived, he was taken in by a woman named Aasha (not real name, nor did she 'legally' adopt him) Aasha is a Giratina worshipper and is part of a cult, she practices witchcraft and stuff like that as well.

When he was 10 years old Aasha brought home a year old named Dearil (unknown if it's his real name or not), Chad had taken it upon himself to look after him and give him a relatively okay child hood.

Aasha was abusive, both physically more so than mentally. (The latter more so than the first, both of the kids received abuse but Dearil more so than Chad.)

Chad was Aasha's golden child and wanted him to be her successor, because of this Dearil was often left on his own a lot but Chad looked after him. Dearil is often VERY starved for affection which Chad provides, Chad has become very distant and stone cold towards everyone around him except Dearil who he'll put up a front for.

Chad like I said grows up to be emotionally distant, but also obdient. Dearil despite hating her has become a lot like Aasha. Rebellious and cruel. Dearil is only nice and caring towards Chad.

Despite attempting to protect Dearil from their adoptive mother's abuse Chad was still at the end of a day also a victim and would fall in line if Aasha's punishemts were too scary or too much for him to handle.

Although Dearil does think Chad is a coward for that, he does understand the fear and doesn't hold it against his older brother. Not always at least.

(This concludes their upbringing, it's brief and not detailed but enough)

Chad, at one point has become more powerful than Aasha, however the fear instilled in him was still great until one day he snapped and overpowered her.

At that point he tries to tell Dearil to run away with him, but Dearil refuses.

Despite hating Aasha she's still Dearil's authority figure and parental figure. She always promised the boy power and the chance to be better and stronger than everyone.

Dearil tried to convince they should stay home together and take on the world together. (Note, he's not looking to take over the world or anything, he's just wanting to survive and he constantly feels like he has to be on guard and attack mode. As does Chad ofc, but he wants to learn to not want to live like that anymore.)

Chad refuses and ultilmatly makes the hard decision to leave Dearil behind, he can no longer live there in the region with his abused and scarred past there. He takes the first boat and leaves to wherever with no destination in mind. He eventually arrives in one of the main game regions and sees a advertisement to the reborn league.

Not having much of a destination in mind he goes for it and the events of reborn main game start there.

At one point during reborn main game Aasha uses her power to connect herself with Chad and tries to convince him to go back.

A little before the glass factory events she uses her power to teleport Chad to a place similar to the distortion world alongside and they fight, she loses and Chad goes back despite her begging and manipulating.

Aasha has been weakened but when she returns she snaps and attempts to destroy everything around her in a frenzy. Dearil tries to take her down but he is simply on strong enough and perishes. This is when he ||meets Variya (Prob spelled her name wrong lol) and is given the role as interceptor||, he gets revived and his host is ||Aero||. (Timeline wise ||5|| years have passed for Chad but Dearil is still the same age from en he died) However Dearil's soul is now filled with hatred, hatred towards Aasha, Chad and the world. However he doesn't remember them and now they don't know WHY they feel so much anger and the constant need to take revenge on ||someone||. He doesn't trust anyone and has no interest in helping anyone out. He simply goes along with the others because he feels he has no destiny or path forward in life anymore.

Seeing ||Giratina in Wispy Tower|| awakens some memories, but not enough. He doesn't do any help center quests, he feels no need to be playful or nice to his friends. He does not seem to care about people who pass away.

When ||Clear and Kieran give him the option to help them destroy the world or whatever ||he takes it. At this point in time he has gotten *some* memories of their past back, but he isn't sure if it's their own memories. He just knows he wants revenge on *something* and|| Clear and Kieran ||are handing that to him on a silver platter.

The thing is Dearil wasn't supposed to have memories of his past, but whatever magic Aasha used against him as become part of him, which also fueled his need for revenge and his hatred. (Aasha felt like the world was against her). Aasha always had a connection to her sons and is always able to know where they are because of it, but they're always able to sense her because of it as well.

Although we're not that far in the game yet in what I assume will be the final battle time stops completely around Dearil.

At first he thinks is ||Tiempa || but then someone speaks to him, someone he thinks he's never heard before, yet the voice sounds so familiar. A golden gate to what seems to be a different world opens and they are told to come through it. They do.

Inside the world time seems to continued and ||the storm seems|| to have infiltrated as well there. Continuing further he sees the men from his memories, Chad. Alongside him is a Giratina (not the one in Aevium) and Arceus (this one looks weird, is it shiny?)

Chad starts with "It seems the ||storm ||has even affected in the new world, I had hoped to evacuate reborn to here if things went south but..."

They talk for a bit and then they fight. Dearil finally fully remembers where the pain, betrayel and anger comes from and attempts to kill Chad, but fails. Chad overpowers him in a pokemon battle and easily in hand to hand combat.

With help of Giratina the magic from Aasha is released from him and Dearil, although still feeling angry and betrayed by Chad slowly starts to feel regret about all his choices.

Chad finally apologizes, although Dearil doesn't forgive him he says he understands.

Dearil says he doesn't want to continue to hurt people anymore and asks if Chad will help out, his older brother explains that things have gone to far south to be fixed right now.

Chad explains that he can send Dearil back in time with help of Dialga and practically reset the events. Dearil won't remember the events in Aevium but will remember their past together and Chad's final words for him now. Words of affirmation, care, expression of guilt and love.

He explains that Dearil's memories might come back at some points, but he is afraid of the consequences what will happen if he allows Dearil to remember everything from the start.

Dearil agrees to it and is send back, at the paragon route starts there.

However although the magic was released from Dearil some of it is still part of him, so his old renegade self comes out from time to time.

That's the quick none detailed version of their story!

Chad (He/Him) is early to mid 20's during Reborn's story and Dearil (He/They) is 18 at the start of the SS Oceana stuff

During the events in Aevium Chad gets married (to you know who if you know me) and has had/is having twins.

Okay so this is their backstory and such, I can also give random facts but maybe for another ask because this is a lot.

how does rfa work? what options does timo have if he chooses not to sign with the devils?

hey anon! that's a good question - UFAs, or unrestricted free agents, are pretty simple in that they can go to whatever team they want as long as they're not under contract, but RFAs (restricted free agents) are a little trickier to get. let's talk! (gonna put it under the cut so people who don't care about the contracts part of the game don't have to hercules scroll to get past this.)

so RFAs are basically defined as Not UFAs and Not Entry Level - so not rookies in their first 1-3 years in the NHL, but also younger than 27 or without 7 NHL years under their belt. Timo, being 26, can declare UFA status next year. crucially, this means that if he doesn't like NJ, he can sign a one year deal and then leave the next year (which basically means we would have traded for one year and some of Timo).

now Timo's got this weird contract where it's really backstacked. his base salaries for the 4 years of it were 700k, 700k, 4m, and 10m. with signing bonuses, 4m, 4m, 6m, 10m. this works both against and for us. his qualifying offer is 10m because of the backstack taking the last year of the contract. so here are the options we have:

Fitz negotiates a contract with Timo (8? 8.5?) for however long. the longer the better to keep him under team control, as, if Timo wants a 2-3 year deal, then he becomes a UFA and we can't control if he stays or goes, which means we have to pay him more money later if he decides to stay (because he can say "well Calgary will give me 9.5" or something like that). Fitz will NOT negotiate a one year contract with Timo... because

Timo's agent is probably smarter than that. here's how QOs work: Fitz has to offer the QO which is 100% of Timo's last-year salary (10m) if they can't get a deal done, else Timo is allowed to walk as a UFA. so if Timo doesn't want to stay in NJ long-term and just wants to cash out, he's going to push for Fitz to have to QO him.

but if Timo really doesn't want to stay, another team can offer sheet him. so he doesn't accept the QO, talks to another team (let's say Calgary again), and Calgary says "we'll pay you 11m to come here". Fitz then gets 7 days to decide if Calgary can take him or if he's going to match that. if he matches, Timo stays with NJ for 11m for one year. if not, Timo goes to Calgary. but but but! offer sheets don't come without a price. depending on the AAV, Calgary will have to pay a massive fee of draft picks. if the offer sheet is under 10m AAV Fitz is going to match because of the QO thing. if it's above, there's a breakpoint. see, there are "tiers" of offer sheet AAVs and each has a different draft pick compensation. up to 10.5ishM is two firsts, a second, and a third. above 10.5ishM is FOUR firsts. so if Calgary goes under that number (which any team probably will), Fitz would probably match it. if someone goes nuts and goes above it, Fitz will likely let Timo walk because FOUR firsts.

another possibility: Timo and Fitz go to arbitration. this very basically means that they talk to an arbitrator who listens to both sides and sets a salary. generally when arbitration is filed it doesn't actually reach arbitration, it's usually a tactic to stop the possibility of offer sheets (although they're super uncommon anyways) and push for more time to figure things out and get the contract. but if it actually hits arbitration, then - okay. so either Timo or Fitz can say "fuck this we arbitrate". if Fitz says that, he MUST honor the arbitration agreement and sign Timo to that amount. if Timo says it, Fitz can still decide whether or not he agrees to the amount (if not, Timo goes UFA). the issue is that the team can't ask for more than a 15% pay cut. Timo's current salary is 10M. I'm not sure if it's AAV or the last year's salary, but if it's last year's, it means they will have to pay at LEAST 8.5M if they hit arbitration. so they don't really want to do that, because Fitz pinches pennies and is pitching for an 8Mish deal. (I assume Fitz is telling Timo 8Mish and Timo's looking for 9Mish long-term, unless Timo's not sold on NJ.)

the last possibility is that Fitz trades Timo. which he can do, because Timo is still an RFA. this is why the whole "we can still get a first-round draft pick" thing has people worried, because Fitz can flip Timo for a first-rounder in this draft (and probably more too). most, if not all, of the teams in the top 15ish of the draft (I've heard the draft class thins considerably after 15 or so and I doubt Fitz trades Timo for the 30th pick in the draft) aren't going to want Timo over their draft pick as they're in rebuild mode and Timo won't fit their window. the one possibility I could MAYBE see would be Buffalo - Buffalo is entering a contention window, might not need the 12th draft pick if they decide to push their chips in and push for a wildcard spot next year (reminder that they were only like 2 points off from being in the playoffs). Buffalo's biggest issue isn't forwards though, it's goalies. so like, unless they put Timo in pads and make Akira teach him to save... idk. I doubt it. but yeah, since we still have Timo's rights, if he says "I'm definitely not coming back here, you broke my nose in the playoffs and I'm traumatized" or whatever have you, Fitz will have to trade him or force him into arbitration (and the latter probably won't make him thrilled to be here). I doubt we trade Timo, though.

what I expect to happen is that Timo signs for an ~8.5M AAV deal. I really expect a longer-term deal from this because if Timo wants to get out, again, he can sign his QO for one year, cash in for a hefty 10M, and get out when he UFAs. recall his agent is Claude Lemieux, though, and Lemieux won 2 of his 3 Stanley Cups with us (and the third because we traded him to Colorado). I'm not saying that Lemieux is gonna go team friendly because we got him Stanley Cup wins, but I am saying that Lemieux is probably on very good terms with the Devils organization, doesn't need a massive payday from this deal, and is likely enough to be nicer to us than, say, Joakim Persson (Bratt's agent) who doesn't have repeated interactions with the Devils and is really pushing for a good deal so he can attract more clients.

but that's just a theory, a stereax theory :)

(also, any and all references to Calgary are entirely fictional, I doubt Calgary is interested in him lol)
