Twilight Clown Takes Special Edition—Bella Would Live Her ~Best Life With Jacob

If Bella had met and loved Jacob, and only Jacob, here’s exactly how it would have panned out:

Jacob being too poor to attend even community college, Bella would have probably not have gone to college, either. Or if she (or Jacob) do manage to attend, time and distance would have led her and Jacob to break up. Considering Bella’s original plan was to suffer through high school then go to college in a sunny area, she may just choose to follow up on that plan and stay just friends with Jacob (best case scenario btw)

If Jacob still transformed into a werewolf in this universe, that would mean many worried days and lonely nights for Bella. And yes, danger, since young werewolves are volatile. Bella would essentially be another Emily, making food and darning clothes for the wolf boys—something she did romanticize, but that was not her original ambitions, however sketchy those were

She’d have kids, either with Normal!Jacob or Werewolf!Jacob. Something, by the way, that she has never thought about and would not ordinarily want (her fantasy had been having an older brother). As with Edward, she would have Jacob’s children out of love, but these children would not be like Renesmee, who would mature in just seven years and is already in control of her faculties. Normal children require a lifetime of care, and Bella’s own childhood experience has been her taking care of her mother. She would definitely grow to resent them in the same way her mother resented her

Bella’s relationship with Jacob in New Moon is characteristic of a typical teen summer affair—hanging out, eating pizza, joking about ages, making Simpsons references. This is enough if you’re a teenager, but will definitely not hold water as an adult. Which leads us to:

Personality. Bella is a white bookish Austenite who is interested in seeing New Zealand or visiting New York. Jacob likes cars and will probably become a mechanic. They literally have nothing in common in terms of hobbies they share or even talk about. Jacob is not academically ambitious, either. And in this universe, Bella never gets an appreciation for motorcycles or thrill-seeking, so they can’t have even that.

The Quileutes. Very cool bunch and close-knit, and Bella would have found her family with them, no problem. But they are a still a poor community, facing deep institutionalized racism, so Bella would have fewer resources than even her life with Renée. Bella is low-income, so the shock would not be that great, but culturally she is still middle class. Charlie is Chief of Police, and Renée made her take ballet lessons, for crying aloud. And Bella’s children would be enrolled in the reservation school with limited resources and she would suffer for them and their future. Bella may try to enroll them in Forks, which would have been a little better, but that would cause racial tensions, among other things

Speaking of racism…sorry to be a Debbie Downer, but there are two ways Bella could go with this. Either she becomes the fiercest ally for Native American rights and/or her family…or she doubles down on the white individualistic strain of her personality and excepts only Jacob and her immediate family from her prejudice. The latter is not at all likely, since familiarity and intimacy always lessens prejudice, but I just want to lay out all the possibilities here, especially considering the scandals of police brutality of the later 2010s

And lastly, Jacob himself. Jacob has shown a lot of good qualities and he is definitely not useless at providing, either as a regular human or as a werewolf. He took care of his father, so that’s big. But this saga has proven beyond the shadow of a doubt that he is no feminist. He’s not going to do the dishes. He’s not going to do the laundry. He’s not going to help raise the kids beyond typical dad expectations or even pick up after himself. That shit will all fall on Bella, 100%

Conclusion: Bella would have grown bored and resent Jacob. Either that, or she would fall back on her Cinderbella social conditioning and gotten stuck there, sacrificing herself in every respect while stubbornly burying her head in the sand. More realistically, she and Jacob would fight constantly, especially about money. They probably would have divorced.

(And if Edward ever came around in this universe when Bella was a middle-aged mother of three in La Push, she would have pounced on him like a cougar. Pun intended.)
