1.0 anon here. You encouraged me to keep checking in with my thoughts as I go.
Just started "Prodigy" (s3e13) and kinda swooned when Benson says "I speak a little Spanish and French. I can Mirandize in three others."
Love me a strong, brave, smart, skilled female lead character who's also got damage and baggage. YES. (Also love that they most likely gave Benson these language skills bc Mariska's got 'em. I hope we get to hear her use them eventually).
And unrelated, but in the previous episode (set in Dec 2001, aired Jan 2002) Cragen mentions "the attacks" in passing and it was kind of stunning that a show about NYPD cops let THAT be the so-far-only treatment of 9/11. I mean, The West Wing interrupted their whole episode flow to air a completely OOC script to allow their characters to process adjacent topics with a bunch of high school students, for a quasi public therapy process...
I know everyone had artistic decisions to make and it wouldn't have worked to make SVU swerve off track and become a terrorism show, but surely (1) SVU detectives would've at least known some of the cops who died in the towers, (2) even if they didn't they'd be traumatized and deeply saddened by all of it, (3) like just about everyone in NYC and the country at that point, they'd be talking and thinking about it??
Maybe this is just the difference between shooting and airing schedules and "the attacks" will have more visibility in coming episodes?
Oh I am very excited about this thank you lol
I find it interesting that while we do hear Liv speak a little Spanish in 1.0 we don't hear her speak Italian until 2.0, and Mariska was fluent in Italian the whole time, having spent time there growing up. But yes!!!! Love that they incorporated that into Olivia's character and I love too the insight it gives maybe not just into Olivia but into her mother; was Serena the one pushing Olivia to learn different languages? Did Serena want her to learn French and Italian, did Serena have books in those languages on the shelves at home, was it important to Serena that her dark haired little fae child be educated, be cultured, be sophisticated? Was Olivia ever enough of those things to make her mother happy?
Iirc the shows don't ever address a personal connection between our mains and 9/11 with the exception of the late reveal that Tucker worked the cleanup and got cancer from it. And personally, I'm kinda glad that they didn't, bc I don't think the show has the skill to handle that topic well. The national conversation about police, and religion, and war and the state, was so deeply, deeply toxic post 9/11 that I shudder to think what a police procedural might have done in that moment in time. Sorkin is a playwright and a man whose work has always had a sharply (white) liberal political bent, and he presented a one hour bottle episode homily that was moving, true, but also deeply informed by his personal beliefs. His audience wasn't lowest common denominator middle America; a lot of middle America hated tww. Some people resent the episode in question, think it's patronizing or over simplifying. L&O was supposed to be for Everyman. Gently teaching middle America about the concept of consent and shyly saying "maybe solitary confinement is bad actually", but even then doing it carefully. Presenting issues as conversations between characters who take up opposing sides, instead of preaching one view point (in 1.0; later when đĄ came on board the show became more preachy). At the time of the attacks SVU didn't have an especially political bent, and given how high tensions were, how emotionally raw the city of New York was, given that everyone involved in making the show lived in NYC (tww was filmed mostly in LA and DC) and how many layers there were to people's feelings.... that's a really delicate line to walk, and the ramifications of doing it badly would be a show killer. Sometimes no response is better than a bad response.
So while I'm interested in the idea of how Liv and Elliot felt as cops working in Manhattan during 9/11, I am glad we don't have Dick Wolf's personal take on it entered in the record, and can instead save this for personal musing, fic, meta and the like. There is a lot to unpack there.

come talk to me about wtsgd! iâd love to know your thoughts!
March 4, 2017
The trunk was filled with heavy boxes that were labeled with thick black sharpie, which didnât seem to leave Lucianaâs senses; and one too many suitcases filled with her many articles of clothing that she couldnât get rid ofâno matter how hard she triedâsince she was too much of a hoarder and every piece of clothing seemed to have a lost memory in them that she tried very hard to think of, which only meant that it was worth keeping.Â
A droplet of sweat leaked down the side of her face due to her nonstop packing and heavy-lifting from her childhood room upstairs to her dadâs car in the driveway. It didnât help that the sun was beaming down at her with every move like she was on center stage, in front of the spotlight, but it made much more sense for the sun to do that because thatâs where she belonged: on stage.Â
Moving to Brooklyn, New York from Cambridge, Massachusetts during, what felt like, the coldest but the sunniest day of March wasnât the smartest moveâto be fair, Luciana was never one to make a smart move, anywaysâbut it was one that needed to be done. Plus, all the lifting seemed to have warmed her up.Â
Her destination, or now, home, in New York was one that sheâd been anticipating for a while now. She had auditioned for the role as Kim in Miss Saigon on Broadway in November, and sheâd gotten a callback in January for the role as the second Kim, meaning she would be on rotation to perform every week or two weeks, so the main Kim could rest. But she would still have to go to rehearsals and be on the side of the stage watching the show just in case she needed to jump in at the last minute.Â
It wasnât her ideal way of playing the main lead, but nonetheless, she was grateful for the opportunity, and she would take any chance that was thrown at her to not only take another step towards her dream, but also another learning opportunity to make her a better actress.Â
Little Luci wouldâve been so proud of the present Luci because itâd been her dream ever since she was younger, to be on stage and eventually, be on the big screen. Although she was far from completing her dream of being a face in Hollywood, this was a step that would take her to where she wanted to be in the future, and for that, she was proud of herself.Â
As a child, Luci had been in various commercials; from being the kid that played with slime and had no lines but to just put on a big smile while the sticky substance ran through her small hands, to being the daughter in a car commercial with one line that said âAre we there yet?â with a groan and a face of exhaustion as if she were the one driving the car. She hoped that these commercials would have someone recognize her talent, to cast her as a Disney star, but that would require moving to California, which her parents were wary of.Â
The commercials stopped when she reached middle school. Her early adolescent years consisted of an abundance of attitude and mood swings; Luci was a very tough and determined kid. Her love for acting had grown into a big balloon that was let go and on its way into the galaxy where no one could reach itâwhere no one could mess with her achieving her dream.Â
She would always stand in front of her white wooden framed mirrorâwith delicately painted colorful flowers around the borderâreciting lines that she heard from a television series or the films that she watched, and she would write them down in her blue notebook. Sometimes, her parents would let her search the script up if it was available online. But oftentimes, she would test and challenge her memorization, and listen to it by ear; testing her mind, and eventually, her memorization skills were immaculate by the age of eleven.Â
It was perfect timing because by the time she was in middle school, she was able to snatch the roles she wanted when her schoolâs drama department held school plays. Her family thought that she would start to hate being on stage since school plays always ran until late evening, but being part of the productions had only enhanced her love for her talent, and it only prepared her for a quarter of what her future may look like.Â
All in all, from a very young age, she always knew that she wanted to become an actress. The spotlight or the center of the camera was where she always craved to be.Â
And she was finally making that dream come true.Â
A black Toyota Camry pulled into the space behind the car that was filled with her belongings. Ren and Beatrice, Luciâs lovely parents, both get out of the car with a pink box of donutsâa snack for the road and for when she gets to her new apartment.Â
âReady, Lucky?â Beatrice asked, rubbing her daughterâs back. She was quite bummed to see Luci leave her childhood home, but sheâs proud to see Lucky Luci chase her dreams. She was, after all, twenty-five and was bound to move out at some point, but to see it actually happen made Beatrice quite emotional.Â
âMa, please, donât cryâŚâ Luci frowned as Beatrice pressed her fingertips to the corners of her eyes. She wrapped her arm around her motherâs shoulder, comforting her. âYouâre all coming to New York in a month, right? To watch me on stage?â Luci asked, reassuring herself that she would see her family in a different state to rescue her from her loneliness.Â
Luci was an independent woman. She could do tasks by herself, go places alone, and she wouldnât have a problem with it; she enjoyed the company of herself. But to know that at some point she might be aloneâthat everyone had left her behind or forgotten about herâwas what scared her. She needed to know that the people who loved her unconditionally wouldnât forget about her.Â
âOf course weâre going!â Ren exclaimed with a smile that Luci was going to miss seeing everyday. âWe canât miss our baby on the Broadway stage. If we could, weâd go to every damn show that youâre in, but that would be a lot of gas, no?âÂ
She chuckled, nodding her head. She felt tears pricking her eyes at how supportive her parents wereâtheyâve always been. If she could, she would take them with her to New York, but her one bedroom apartment and their work said otherwise.Â
âNow, Lucky, donât cry.â It was Beatriceâs turn to comfort her daughter. Like any parent, when they see their child cry, it breaks their heart and they cry too. âWeâre gonna see you real soon. You can always come back anytime you want. Weâre just a phone call away and weâll pick you up,â Beatrice said between sniffles. The mother and daughter were embracing so tenderly and comfortinglyâenjoying every last moment together until they got to see each other again.Â
âJeez, youâre both the sameâalways crying!â Ren interrupted, making the two women laugh; and he was glad they found what he said amusing because he couldnât handle the sad moment. âCâmon here, my Lulu.â Luci settled into her fatherâs arms, hugging him tightly. Sheâs always been her dadâs girl, despite having a close relationship with her mother, her relationship with her father was something that felt like home; he always knew what to say and when to say it. It helped that she was the female version of him. âYouâre gonna be the best star out there, Iâm sure of it. Now, I want you to have fun, alright? The fame, the fortune, the big cityâŚit doesnât amount to anything if youâre not having the time of your lifeâ He comfortingly rubbed Luciâs back, holding her in a warm and tight squeeze.Â
Luci smiled at her fatherâs words. She was always a bit hard on herself when she would mess up or forget a line or a movement that correlates to a specific line in her script. When she was younger, she would beat herself up for a sliver of a moment; she would cry into her pillowâsobs loud enough that they were heard from downstairs. Luci would think that she wouldnât become a well-known actress just because of the minor forgetfulness her mind had presented. But Ren would gently tap on her ocean blue door, letting himself in because he knew his daughter didnât have the energy to get up and let him in, and he would sit beside her, gently urging her to sit up with him. Once she complied, after many groans of refusals, she would be glad she did because her father looked deeply into her eyesâand it was like looking into the reflection of clear and clean waterâand told her she was a star. It was only three words, but those three words reminded her to never give up and get up when she would hit the pavement of what she felt like were her fallen hopes and dreams.Â
Ren would then end it with a statement of advice that had always lingered in her mind, resonating to the silent and harshful words that she tells herself. âNothing will amount to anything if youâre not having the time of your life.â
A rush of gratitude settled upon her as her eyes became glossier by the seconds she was in Renâs arms. Beatrice looked at her greatest treasures fondly, a smile appeared on her face only for it to be replaced by a look of confusion.Â
âWhere is that damn brother of yours? He said he was going to be here at ten!â Beatrice interrupted the sweet moment she was having with her father, making them disconnect from the hugâjust as Ren did with Luci and Beatrice. Â
Speaking of the devil, her dear brother was making his way towards home on the side of the street, wearing a grey sweatshirt that was stained with his sweat as his earphones were nestled in his ears, loudly playing music. He loudly sang along to some rap song, breath staggered as he rapped along with his hands.Â
Nathan smiled once he stepped foot onto the driveway as he took out his earphones, seeing his family look at him vigilantly. Luci laughed, shaking her head.Â
âHey, thereâs our superstar, little Ana!â Nathan opened his arms, ready to hug you but she quickly stopped him, curving her spine backwards to deny his hug. Ana had been one of the many nicknames her family had called her when she was growing up from the second half of her name, but Ana seemed to have stuck with Nathan as no one else really called her that, so it was his own personal nickname for her.Â
âEw, please, do not hug me.â Her face wrinkled in disgust from the spell of her brotherâs sweat from his run. Nathan chuckled, playfully rolling his eyes before turning towards his parents.Â
âOoh, donuts-â
Beatrice slapped the back of his hand before he even got a chance to open the pink donut box. âNot until you shower and change. Lulu needs to be in Brooklyn by three!âÂ
âOw, mother!â Nathan whipped his hand away from Beatriceâs burning slap, although he was just playing around and being dramatic. âBut fine, alright. The star always gets what she wants, am I right?â He dropped his head towards Luci, sighing before he hurried inside the house to take a quick shower and change.Â
Luci giggled, telling her parents that she would be right back to go up to her room to check if sheâd gotten everything, even though she knew that she had everything, she just needed to reminisce alone for a moment.Â
Her feet took her up the wooden stairs, where she, for some unknown reason, always spent her time sitting on as she leaned her back against the wall and read or drew. Nathan always found it weird of her when they were doing homework when they were younger, but it was just one of the many fun anecdotes he could tell reporters if heâs asked about their childhood.Â
Pushing open her ocean blue door that she never changed because she loved the color, she was met with the emptiness of what was once her sanctuary. Despite the paint on the wall changing, the replacement of furniture, and rearrangement of her childhood room, Luci could still see the baby pink walls where she hung up various posters of her celebrity crushes when she was eight. She could still see herself walking over to her Cinderella white wooden dresser as she pulled out an inflatable microphone from her drawer before she walked over to her bed to sing her heart out with her cousin. In the corner of her room was her mirror that she painted colorful flowers along the border when she was younger, and she definitely did not want to change or get rid of it; it wasnât difficult to stir up a memory when she was in front of that mirror because up until now, she was always reciting her lines to her own reflection until the late night.Â
All of these memories that Luci held within her heart would help her ground herselfâremind her where she came from. No matter where her career took her, she would always be the girl that was firstly known in her room, crying, laughing, and acting within the four baby pink walls until she was sixteen, and then it changed to an ecru white. The feeling of nostalgia clutched her chest, and for the second time todayânot even noon, yetâshe found herself crying.Â
She silently sobbed in her sanctuary. Her chest felt tight, like her heart was grasping onto the memories, begging her to not leave, to not move on. But moving on would mean being stuck, and she didnât want to feel stuckâshe just never wanted to be in one place where the walls would slowly feel like they were closing in on her. She didnât want to be in one place and eventually hated it, so for that, she had to move on.Â
A soft knock was heard from the outside of her bedroom, making Luci turn around hastily. She found Beatrice standing in the doorway, warmly smiling at her daughter, and keeping the tears at bay because she needed the comfort of her mother more than her motherâs tears.Â
âMy Lucky StarâŚâ Beatrice walked into the room, welcoming Luci into her arms. âYou okay?âÂ
Luci deeply inhaled and exhaled as she calmed herself down from her cries. âIâm alright. Itâs just hard saying goodbye to this placeâto my room.ââ
âOh, Lulu. You donât need to say goodbye. I know youâll be coming back here soon, anyways. I know you love home too much to completely stay away.â Beatrice was subtly trying to remind Luci about her love for her hometown, for her home, but her words also were trying to remind her about that certain love for her home and to never forget that love so she doesnât stray away because Beatrice was simply afraid Luci would never want to come back once she discovered the luxury of her career. And even though she knew her Lulu wasnât one to forget about her family, Beatrice would never admit her fear.Â
Luci sniffled, wiping her tears away as she pulled away from her motherâs embrace. âYeah, I know. JustâŚdoesnât feel real that Iâm leaving.âÂ
âSure, youâre leaving, but youâre going off to do bigger and better things. You were never one to stay in one place, physically and mentallyâyou were always moving, always loved learning more. And Iâve always been so intrigued and interested in how your mind works.âÂ
âMaâŚâ The waterworks seemed to be the highlight of the move.Â
âIâm serious! Iâm so genuinely proud of you. Youâve been keeping your talentâand I donât mean âhigh school playsâ talent. I mean your Broadway, Hollywood, Academy winning talent. Now, you get to showcase your light in front of thousands of people.â Beatrice always had a way of boosting Luciâs self-esteem, making her ego a tad bit more bigger than it already was. She didnât mind if her self-esteem had skyrocketed into the galaxy of her dreams, but she always reminded Luci that being humble and kind always outweighed being obnoxious and arrogant. âNow, enough with these tears. Youâve got a road trip to New York. Câmon, now.âÂ
They made their way downstairs and out the door where Ren and Nathan were talking about the latest basketball game of the Celtics. The trunk was closed, and the only thing waiting was Luci herself.Â
âThere she is! Ready?âÂ
Luci took a deep breath, turning her head to look back at the pastel yellow house that had kept her safe for the past twenty-five years. From here, she knew everything was going to change. Whether itâd be for the good or if things would go downhill from here? She didnât know; all she knew was that she was going to be doing what she loved and she was going to have the time of her life doing it.Â
âYeah, Iâm ready.âÂ
The state of Connecticut seemed to pass by quickly from the car as Nathan drove at a decent seventy miles per hour; the state vanished just as quickly as when they entered.Â
Luci mindlessly looked out the window, thinking about everything and nothing at once as she drowned out the music playing through the speakers of the car and Nathanâs voice singing along.Â
The cars passing by, the bystanders, and the locals filled the streets and highways, making her wonder what all of these peopleâs stories wereâwondering if they lived in this city or if they were just stopping by to visit, or if theyâre just going through the state to get to the one next door just as she was. Maybe sheâs had an encounter or simply passed by them on the street in a world that seemed too large but small at the same time. She always pondered on whether everyone else thought the way she thoughtâif they wondered what her story was or the people around them.Â
The world is an interesting place and there were so many intriguing people out there, making her more excited by the minute as she takes on this new adventure in her life that would be completely life changing. Luciâs going to be meeting so many new people that, she would hope, have an impact on her personal life or career.Â
âNervous?â Nathan broke the comfortable silence between them.Â
Luci raised her brows and curled her lips into her mouth. âA bit.âÂ
He nodded, thinking for a moment. Nathan was always one to think before he spoke, and it was a quality that some people needed to learn how to do. He quickly learned that lesson when he was in high school; one of his friends, Johnny, and him were going back and forth joking around with one another. And for some odd reason, teenage boys liked to joke around about fucking everything, so Nathan had said âYeah, I fucked your mom, what about it?â without thinking. Johnny stayed silent, the rest of their friends were waiting for his comeback, but they only received tears that glossed over his eyes before he ran off to a different part of campus, away from the lunch tables. Nathan found him behind the orchestra building with his face pressed on his kneecaps, crying. Later, he found out that Johnnyâs mother had passed away before their sophomore year started and he hadnât told anyone, which left Nathan quite speechless, but it was a lesson that he learned: to think before anything comes out of his mouth.Â
âI know youâll do great. You were born to do this, born to be on stage. Everything you do is to greater your experience and opportunities. All the mistakes youâre gonna make, which we both know youâre gonna make, theyâre gonna be learning lessons for you to continue doing what youâre good at doing; the mistakes are there so you can better yourself,â he reassured, occasionally glancing at you briefly before averting his eyes back onto the highway.Â
Luci smiled, never taking her eyes off her older brother. She leaned closer to the middle console, where his right arm was resting on the padded console. Hugging his arm tightly and resting her cheek on his shoulder, she accepted and appreciated his advice, his words. They made her heart fill up with so much gratitude and love, insanely grateful and happy that she had such an amazing and supportive family who always knew the right things to say when they could sense her nerves and anxieties powering through the roof.Â
âYouâre gonna kill it out there. This is just a step towards where you wanna go, where you actually wanna be.âÂ
She nodded, looking to her right as they quickly passed the âWelcome to New Yorkâ sign from the state line of Connecticut and New York, and it was the sign indicating her new home.Â
Nathan pulled into the apartmentâs parking garage, entering in with the code that the complex gave Luci on the silver keypad as the two watched the automatic gate arm swing up to the side, and Nathan entered the parking structure, parking in one of the many spaces available.Â
Luci excitedly got out of the car, rushing to the trunk where Nathan had opened it from inside the car. Unfortunately, she had forgotten to bring the hand dolly to help carry the boxes, which meant that the siblings were going to have to carry the many boxes she packed by her own hand and strength. But luckily, some of them werenât that heavy; most of the items in the brown boxes were kitchenware and she figured she could just drag those.Â
One by one, they took one box each and headed for the elevator, where it took them to her apartment floorâfloor four. Luci grabbed the keys from her purse that contained two copper keys hanging on one single silver loop and a small keyless sensor, and she unlocked her navy blue door, revealing her new apartment.Â
When she entered, she was met with a door across the entrance that she would use for her coats and shoes, things that she would need when sheâs rushing out the door. Going through the small hallway in from the entrance, it led her to another small hallway to her left where her bedroom and guest bathroom was; and to her right, it would take her to the kitchen and living space. With four big windows with black window frames, the natural light really came in, making her place brighter for saving electricity.Â
Walking in and putting the boxes against the black cabinets in the kitchen, she immediately fell in love with the space, her space. Despite already taking a tour of the apartment a few months prior to her official move in day, it felt different being there for the second time because she now knew that this place was hers. She saw it in a different light, and she was already anticipating the memories she was going to make in her new home. The place was empty; and with every step and every noise from her mouth, the room would echo, and she loved it. There was something satisfying about the echo in an empty space that was hers, like she wanted to furnish the hell out of it, but at the same time, she didnât mind the echo.Â
âThis is your new home.â Nathan put an arm around Luciâs shoulder. He got a bit emotional seeing his baby sister grow up and move away from home, but he was excited for all of the experiences and memories she was going to make. Luci looked up at him, not saying anything but smiling as she was speechless. Nathan could practically feel the excitement run through her and all he did was chuckle at her speechlessness. âCâmon, letâs go get the rest of the boxes.âÂ
For the next fifteen minutes, Luci and Nathan hauled the boxes from the car, to the elevator, and down the hallway to her apartment. There were about four more boxes left in the trunk, and they wouldâve been finished by now if they hadnât been taking breaks.Â
Nathanâs phone rang as he was sitting on the floor, leaning against the cabinets of the kitchen across from Luci who was sitting in the corner where her dining table would be.Â
âHello?â Answered Nathan. âWhat? Tonight? Iâm in New York. Iâm helping my little sister move here. Uh, okay. Sure. Bye.â He groaned, standing up.Â
âWho was that?â Luci asked, nosy as she was.Â
âThat was one of the board members at Mass General Hospital.â Luciâs eyes widened. âThey just asked me if I could come in tonight to teach and supervise the new residents.â Nathan was a general doctor working in the Emergency Room as Mass General back in Boston. Heâs always wanted to teach with all the knowledge heâs stored in his brainâalways wanting someone to learn a thing or two when they spoke to him, and this was his chance.Â
âHoly shit, thatâs amazing, Nate!â Luci stood up, excited for him.
He started to breathe a bit heavily and Luci immediately took notice; she could practically feel the nerves coming out of him, the same nerves she felt while going in for an audition. âYeah, I actually have to leave, like, right now.âÂ
âHey, hey.â She quickly stopped him from running out of the building and out of his mind. âCome hereâbreathe with me for a second.â She held onto his wrists gently.Â
âLuci, I have to-â
He pulled away, but she tugged him back. âYouâre going to drive yourself through the highway, and who knows what will happen, you might get pulled over and you wonât make it to the hospital. So, just take sixty seconds to breathe with me.âÂ
For the remainder of the time that they had together, they took some deep breaths. She spoke encouraging and uplifting words to him to calm down his nerves and anxieties that he seemed to drive himself over a cliff for, and it seemed to work as Nathanâs shoulderâs werenât so tense and the grip on her hands had loosened.Â
The two of them walked down to the parking garage where Nathan took down the last four boxes and placed them by the entrance of the complex. He was adamant on helping her get the last few boxes up to her apartment, but she shrugged it off, telling him that she was able to carry them and that he needed to leave because heâs most likely going to hit traffic during rush hour.Â
âCall me if you need anything, okay? I mean it. I will drive here in a heartbeat.âÂ
âI will, I will-â
âJust not tonight,â he joked. âThis is the highlight of my career.â His smile was so bright that it was like he was a little kid on Christmas again who just received a Hot Speed set from Santa.Â
Luci laughed, hugging him goodbye. âAnd call me if you need anything too. Iâll miss seeing you everyday,â she admitted, a slight frown on her face. She thought sheâd have the entire day with Nathan, but it was cut short due to his work but she wasnât mad about that at all because she knew there'd be plenty of times when he would drive down to walk along the New York streets and see her perform.Â
âIâm gonna miss you too, Ana. But I love you and Iâll see you next month!â He hurried into his car, and Luci watched him as he pulled out of the driveway, waving at the rear view mirror to say one last âsee you laterâ to his little sister.Â
Walking back to the curb where all of the boxes were set, Luci picked one up to test how heavy it was and she barely made it upright without almost hurting her back, so she put the box down to take a proper breather. She decided to drag the box closer to the door of the complexâwhich saved her a few steps without completely dropping the box that was labeled âglass platesââand pulled the handle of the door, only to find it completely locked. There was a slight panic that flew through her until she realized that she needed her keyless tag that she had to press against the pad on the wall to get inside the complex, so she blew out a sigh of relief before reaching down to her pocket for her key, and with just her luck, her keys werenât in her pocket or with her at all. Then she started to panic again.Â
Luci quickly walked out of the parking garage and to the front of the building where the leasing office was to find them closed, which was odd because it was Saturday, but apparently their servers were down so they just decided to take the entire day off. She rolled her eyes annoyingly, walking back to the garage in a fast manner because she didnât want anyone to take her boxes, and so she figured that she could just wait until someone left the complex or arrived. She even left her phone at her place, so it wasnât like she could call anyone to help her, but some sort of entertainment would help the time go by quicker.Â
Sitting on the curb in the garage, pacing back and forth on the sidewalk, and humming the melody from the Miss Saigon soundtrack, an hour goes by until she sees someone walk past the automatic gate barrier, heading towards the entrance where he opened the door with his tag. Luci sprinted towards the door, calling out for help.Â
âWait, wait!â The man turned around confusingly, taking his AirPod out of one ear. She caught up, taking deep breaths as she waved at the man. âSorry, Iâve been out here for an hour and I completely forgot my key.â He didnât say anything but stared at her, wondering why heâs never seen this woman before. The apartment complex really only had four floors, and heâs sure that heâs seen everyone whoâs lived here. She noticed that he looked down at the boxes and back at her. âOh, I just moved in.â He nodded more understandingly. âDo you mind holding the door for me?âÂ
âSure.â Was the first thing he told her before stepping aside to hold the door. She took another deep breath, getting into the correct form so she doesnât throw her back out, and began to lift the heavy box. He noticed her struggling, and he felt foolish for not offering his help in the first place when he noticed the four boxes on the cement. âHere, sorry, let me help with that. Get the door, yeah?â Luciâs heart flipped once she heard his deep, accented voice before she gratefully thanked him and he grabbed the box from her, replacing her hands with his and the slightest brush of their fingers made her flustered; he held the box tightly to his chest without much struggle.Â
âYeah, let me just get this one.â Luci grabbed a much lighter box that had all of her shoes, and held the door for him with her foot as he made his way inside of the building and to the elevator. He pressed the button with the arrow pointing up, and luckily, they didnât have to wait for more than five seconds before the bell at the top chimed and the stainless steel doors opened.Â
With the heavy box in his hands, he still let Luci walk in first, which made her smile and he followed in as she pressed with the bold â4â printed on it. He held the box in between his chest and the other end of the bar on the wall as they waited in silence as the elevator lifted them up to her apartment floor, and she brushed past him when he lifted his arm, gesturing her to go first.Â
Her front door was closed but it was unlocked, which only made sense, so she opened her door, putting the box next to the entrance and politely asking the man to put it next to the one you put down.Â
âThank you so much, really. You have no idea how much I appreciate your help.âÂ
âItâs no problem. I was the same when I moved here tooâforgot my keys and was locked out.â He related to make her feel lighter about the situation since it was an honest mishap.Â
âDid you go to the leasing office?â She asked curiously.Â
âYeah, but they were closed.âÂ
âTheyâre closed today too! Itâs like they do that on purpose whenever someone new moves in.â The man chuckled, scratching the back of his neck.Â
She hadnât gotten a proper look at him since she was too distracted by trying to get into her building, but just by one real look at him, he was very attractiveâprobably too attractive to where she couldnât think straight. He was wearing a pastel yellow and white striped button down that was a bit flowy and open, showing his white tank underneath that was tucked into his black skinny jeans. His tank top was low enough, exposing a patch of chest hair and his necklace that rested against his skin, in between his swallow tattoos just below his collarbones. Rings hugged his long fingers on both hands as he held two brown paper bags from Trader Joes. He was handsome, thatâs for sure, and she felt like she was going to compare his beauty to all the other men that she was going to encounter in the future.Â
âTheyâre not very good at going into work, but if you give them a call then itâs like theyâre a 24/7 help center.âÂ
Luci nodded, chuckling. âGood to know. Iâll keep that in mind.âÂ
âIâll help you with the last boxes.â Before she was about to protest and tell him that he didnât have to help her anymore because she was sure the last ones were light, he made his way towards the elevator and she quickly followed.Â
To her surprise, one of the boxes was heavier than the other and she was glad that the man was able to carry it for her. They took the boxes up to her apartment, stacking it on top of the ones that were set down before she thanked him gratefully again.Â
âI really appreciate all your help.â She smiled, leaning against the doorframe.Â
âNot that Iâm doubting your strength or anything, but how were you supposed to get those boxes up to your apartment?â He asked softly, not wanting to offend her by his words.Â
âOh, my brother was supposed to help me, but he had to go back home for an emergency at work.â The man nodded, seeming that was the most acceptable answer, not like he was searching if she was lying. âBut thank you for your help. Youâre a true lifesaver,â she said with a soft smile on her face. Her tone was a bit flirty than she wanted it to be, but it naturally came out.Â
âItâs not a problem. Iâll see you around.â Luci hadnât closed her door yet, but she found out that he was literally her neighbor on the opposite side of the wall. He didnât even have to take two steps to get to his placeâall he had to do was turn around and he was home. She smiled at the thought of that, glad that her neighbor was already so kind to her.Â
As he was fumbling with his keys, he eventually got his door unlocked, and Luci was itching to ask what his name wasâmaybe make her first friend during her first day living in the big city. The man felt his neighbor's eyes on him, burning through the back of his head, so he turned around at the same time she spoke.Â
âUh, hey,â Luci called out. He was looking over his shoulder, pursing his lips as he raised his brows. âI was wondering ifâŚyouâd like to have dinner with me tonight? Yâknow, to thank you for all your help and practically saving me while I was stranded.â She chuckled, playing with the tips of her fingers as she looked at him with hope.Â
He thought the invitation was nice, butâŚâItâs okay, really. I, uh, have plans already tonight,â he admitted honestly because he doesnât make a habit of being dishonest.Â
Luci had some thick skinâshe grew it throughout the years, and she had always been pretty confident. So many people would think that she could handle rejection well because sheâs auditioned for many roles in her lifetime, and had been rejected for most of those roles. But the rejection that her neighbor handed to her so respectfully and politely was one that hit her the most, and she didn't know why.Â
Curling her lips into her mouth as she felt the pang of her heart sinking into her chest, she nodded and placed a small smile onto her face.Â
âHave fun tonight, then. Iâll see you around.â She grinned, hiding the slight bit of pain that she felt. He nodded, walking inside his apartment as she was in her doorway as well. âOh, Iâm Luci, by the way.â She introduced herself, feeling like she should have done that ten minutes ago, but it had slipped her mind.Â
The corner of the manâs mouth turned up into a sly smirk, and she nearly felt herself fall as she gripped the door handle tightly. It was enough to make the pain in her chest disappear, and all thoughts of the rejection that she would think about for the rest of the night vanished.Â
âNice to meet you, Luci. Iâm Harry.âÂ
With that, Harry closed his door, putting a barrier between him and Luci, who was still standing in her doorway. She let out the longest sigh of her life, feeling like sheâd been constricting herself from breathing properly for the last ten minutes.Â
Luci closed her door and leaned against it, looking down at the boxes that were resting by her feet. She softly smiled, her cheeks were starting to get warm, and she was fully aware that Harry was the cause of it.

so, I was watching the video that came out today and I was thinking about a age gap seb x reader around his friends like Jessica or maybe chace? And they're just hanging out and they both have this lovesick look on their faces and when she leaves the room for some reason they don't waste any time addressing how in love she is with him, and sebs glad bc they were kinda wary of her at first?
Hiyaaa babes! This is my first request so woohoo𼳠Since you mentioned the video, I literally thought of the pictures that were released while they were filming 355, and now I canât get the image of Seb in Paris because holy shit he looked good. So Iâm gonna be using Jessicaâ¤ď¸
- This came out so long, Iâm a sucker for background info and canât get past writing a story without oneđ Enjoy!đ
đ.
Lovesick
You and Sebastian were unexpected. Literally the chances of you guys getting together were so off and you guys were at different times of your lives. He was in his late 30s, already living most of his life as a successful actor. While you were in your early 20s still in college working on your doctoral degree to become a Pharmacist (It was the only major I could think of atm because itâs the one Iâm planing on lol.) You guys met at the cafe near your campus. You always went there every morning and would spot him drinking his morning coffee with his nose stuck in a new script he was reading. You two would sneak glances at each other, admiring each other from afar. Until one day when the cafe was fairly packed and you needed a place to sit. You spotted his familiar face and asked him if you could sit in the seat across from him. Obviously he agreed and you guys talked, getting to know each other the whole time. When it was time for you to leave for classes, you guys exchanged numbers and kept in touch.
Which brings us to today. You and Sebastian have been going strong for about a year now and were approaching your second year together. Though you two are as happy as can be and are still in the honeymoon phase (even after a year), the first few months of the relationship were quite rough. There was an obvious age gap between you two, it didnât bother you two as much, but the public didnât react too nicely about it. Your parents werenât too fond of the idea of you dating an older man, but after getting to know him they knew his intentions with you were well. Same goes for your friends and family. When it came to his fans and the media finding about your relationship, thatâs when it went to shit.
The media made Sebastian look like some creep who was going through a midlife crisis for dating someone much younger than him. A few âfansâ even claimed that he were a âgroomerâ after pictures of you and him heavily making out on the street were released. These issues caused some bumps in the road for your relationship, though after many arguments, you two realized that the only opinions that mattered were each otherâs.
Now you two were staying at a hotel in Paris. Sebastian was currently working on a big project, âThe 355â, something he was very excited about. This was one of the first projects that he was really involved in, from script to screen, he played a pretty big role in this project.
You were typing up a report for your class when Sebastian entered the hotel room. He was still in his set clothes, a light blue shirt, dark jeans, and a pair of Chelsea boots. He approached the bed where you were typing and pressed a kiss to your temple.
âHey sweetheart, howâs school going?â He greeted you as he settled himself on the bed, laying on his side.
âMeh, itâs going...but I finished my report on time. Now I just need to proofread it.â You smiled as you finished typing the last sentence of your report. When Sebastian discovered he was going to film in Paris, he immediately told you, knowing youâve been dreaming of visiting Paris. Luckily for the both of you, your school allowed you to do online learning (it probably doesnât work like that but just go with it) and you were able to tag along with him.
âIâm sure itâs prefect, youâre a great writer.â He complimented, you hummed in response. Turning to him you run your hand through his short hair making him lean into your touch. You loved his fluffy hair but the short hair was starting to grow on you.
Sebastian turned his head and pressed a kiss into your palm, stormy eyes gazing up at you.
âHow has your day been?â You asked.
âIt was good. We got through a good amount of scenes without messing up, so Iâd say it was a successful day.â He answered. You smiled at his enthusiasm. Sebastianâs face always lit up when he was talking about a project and it was one of the things you admired most about him, his passion for his work.
âSo, youâve been cooped up in this damn hotel all day. Why donât you come to dinner with me and the cast tonight? Youâve been waiting to visit Paris all your life and you havenât even been outside this hotel for days.â He suggested. It was true, you havenât done much but do school work, order room service, and binge watch shows on Netflix.
âAre you sure theyâd want me to come? I might be intruding.â Honestly you were nervous to meet the rest of the cast. Youâve met Jessica a few times but they were brief and she seemed like she didnât like you. Though that could just be your thoughts making you paranoid, you were still nervous to meet the people Seb worked with. You didnât want them to think you were using him for money or to travel around the world because you werenât. You loved Sebastian for himself, not the money and the fame, you could care less about all that.
But they were still Sebastianâs friends and you wanted to have a good first impression on them. You didnât want them to think you were just some immature college girl who needed money to pay off her college funds.
Noticing you were drifting off, Sebastian pressed another kiss into your palm and grasps it. âYou wouldnât be intruding, Jessica actually suggested you come along.â He mentioned.
âAre you sure?â
âPositive, baby. Come on, letâs put this stuff away and get ready. Weâre having dinner at the Eiffel Tower.â
âIâ the Eiffel Tower?â
â˘
To say you were intimidated and scared shitless was an understatement. Here you were in the Eiffel Tower having dinner with some of the most talented women in Hollywood. Like seriously Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyongâo, PenĂŠlope Cruz, and Diane Kruger. Of course Seb and Ădgar RamĂrez where there as well. Then there was you, NYC local college student. You didnât wanna say you felt out of place, but you did. These were successful people who probably starred in some of the movies you watched growing up. Now youâre literally in the Eiffel fucking Tower having dinner with them.
Dinner was going smoothly, everyone was talking about the set, shared some funny stories, and you were keeping to yourself simply eating your steak. That was until the attention was brought to you.
âSo (y/n), Sebastian mentioned you were in college, what are you studying?â Jessica asked. Everyone turned to you and you swear you felt like a deer in headlights. Seb nudged your thigh with his, a reassuring smile on his face.
âYes I am! Iâm actually taking a PharmD program at St. John Fisher to become a Pharmacist.â you answered.
âFor your masters?â She followed up curiously, slightly leaning forward to you.
âNo, for my doctoral degree.â You corrected her proudly. You didnât want to come off as an ass, but you were proud of your work and you worked your ass off for it.
Everyone at the table was taken back by your response. Except Sebastian, who had a just as proud smile on his face. They knew you were in college but not studying something as serious as Pharmacy.
âSt.John Fisher College? I had a cousin that went there, itâs a great college.â Lupita was the first to break the silence.
âSo are you working in the field yet? For some experience?â PenĂŠlope chimed in. Sebastian snorted, âOh she has experience, trust me.â
You chuckled as you softly smacked Sebâs bicep, âWell currently, Iâm interning as a Pharmacy Tech at a hospital pharmacy. Theyâre thinking about making me a permanent one until I graduate so fingers crossed!â
As you answered all their questions about your personal life and your major, Sebastian couldnât help but just admire you. Just like how you admired the way he talked about his projects, he admired the way you got lost in rambling about your soon career. The way your eyes lit up, how your hands moved while you talked, and that hint of a smile on your face. He absolutely adored every single thing about you.
Dinner continued, the last question for you about why you chose to do college in New York, which segwayed into a conversation aboutâ well New York. As the others talked about their love for the city, Sebastian wrapped his arm around your shoulders. Your back was now pressed to his chest, both of you not listening to the conversation. You pressed a kiss to his arm and looked back at him.
âHey you.â You hummed at him rubbing your thumb along his arm.
âHi.â He gazed down at you with that smile that made his eyes crinkle. The moment was interrupted by your phone ringing. Quickly glancing at the contact ID, it was the hospital pharmacy you interned for.
âYou should take that.â Seb whispered into your ear.
âNo, Seb thatâs rude. Weâre at dinner, Iâm sure it can wait.â
âI have a good feeling about this call, draga mea.â He coaxed you. Having a feeling that he might be right you excuse yourself from the table. When youâre gone the table goes quiet.
âSebastian, youâve got one hell of a girlfriend.â PenĂŠlope stated as the rest of the table agreed.
âSheâs so smart! What the hell, a doctoral degree? Kudos to her because the amount of motivation I would need to even try!â Jessica followed up with an amazed look on her face.
âI think you guys are forgetting to mention how whipped they both are for each other! Those two were in their own world over there!â Lupita pointed out. The whole table laughed as Sebastian was turning red. Of course he was whipped, he knew he was.
âI love her guys, sheâs, sheâs something else. The spunk she has, her intelligence, sheâs-,â Sebastian began to list but was cut off by Ădgar, âOut of your league?â
The whole table burst into laughter as they agreed with Ădgar. You were also coming back to the table after your call. Sebastian spotted you, eyes connecting to yours immediately.
âEverything alright?â
âThey gave me the permanent job!â
draga mea - my darlingÂ

Multiples of 10 for the ask meme? Pretty please?
10:Do you like the way that you grew up? Thatâa a bit of a loaded question. It was fine up until my pre-teens until my family dynamic changed and I realized how Much my parents were as far as strictness/trying to keep me under their thumb/trying to make sure their beliefs are mine (i.e politically), my dadâs workplace kind of turned him into a jerk so we started butting heads a lot, and itâs been... getting more and more strained since. Donât get me wrong, Iâm provided for, they do a lot for me, I know Iâm loved but... theyâre just very exhausting, always have been.Â
20:What was the last thing you watched on tv? I currently have Supernatural going for background noise. Season 12. Iâm very confused.Â
30:Howâs the weather right now? Cold but not good cold, not snowy enough, not cloudy. 4/10, would not recommend. Â
40: What was your first thought when you woke up this morning? âIâm glad Iâm working again but God at what costâ bc of a 6am wakeup call... when I have a 530am one tomorrow. Should I be sleeping right now? Absolutely. Â
50: 5 random facts about yourself:
I was a band geek in elementary school to middle school. I started with the orchestral bass, switched to cello, switched to baritone - and then during a summer program the teacher basically handed me a tuba and made me the tuba player for that couple of months because our first guy left for some reason.Â
For a while I was fiercely protective of Wilford Brimley ( the âdia-beet-usâ commercial guy) whenever anybody made fun of those commercials because when my dad and I were visiting a fish hatchery when I was a kid, one of his movies was being filmed there. Now for some reason, one of the crewmembers was super rude to us about being in the area (mind you, that they werenât even filming in) and tried to shoo us away. Wilford Brimley saw him, came over and told the guy in so many words, âtheyâre nowhere near the shoot, theyâre minding their own business, theyâre being quiet, leave them alone.âÂ
When we had to read Catcher in the Rye in high school, I was the only one in the class my teacher trusted to read the section where Holden says âfuckâ like five times in the span of two pages aloud.
My favorite drink is Mountain Dew Voltage and here on Long Island you can only get it in the 20oz bottles in like... two different store chains and thatâs a crime.Â
Aside from college, Iâve only ever lived in one house/in one city and I haaaatttteeee it. And it doesnât help that Iâm not fond of where my parents and I are moving but Iâm too broke to go my own way yet.Â

SO. Some thoughts on the shorts presentations.
(Note: I only go to the live-action and animated ones; the documentary shorts are harder to see in my city and frankly, theyâre often too intense for my current mental health.)
I went to see the shorts yesterday and like I said earlier, I thought the live-action shorts were generally very good and the animated shorts were generally a waste of time and In A Heartbeat was fucking robbed. The live-action shorts were mostly based on true stories, oddly enough, but they were still beautiful.
(This is two years of underwhelming animated nominees and Iâm like ughhhh bc some years everything is amazing but recently Iâve not been agreeing with their picks at all.)
Iâm about to discuss like 13 shorts, so itâs all under a cut.
Live-Action Shorts
DeKalb Elementary
I have to be honest with you, considering our current political climate, I started crying from the moment this short started until it ended. Like I saw the title come up on the screen and I was like OH NO. The short is based on the real-life school shooting at Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy, and I teared up just typing that sentence. However, this school had one of the few âhappyâ endings of a shooting; a receptionist at the school started talking to the shooter and calmed him down until he could admit that he really needed medical help and didnât want to hurt anyone. She probably saved a lot of lives, and this dramatic interpretation of her 911 call is really deeply touching. The acting was really incredible, and the connection between the two of them was palpable without lessening the terrifying suspense of the moment. A really beautiful and deeply affecting short.
(Though, all that said, I wonder at the decision to create a mostly apolitical short about school shootings in todayâs climateâŚ)
(cw: guns, threatened violence, mental health issues)
A Silent Child
Surprise, I cried through this one, too! A Silent Child is a short about a young deaf girl in the UK whose parents refuse to learn sign language or teach it to her. This is a depressingly common experience in real life, and watching this girlâs nanny teach this girl sign language and seeing her really come alive now that she could truly communicate, neither the motherâs jealousy and self-consciousness nor her eventual decision to fire the nanny and forbid her child from ever using sign language again surprised me.
To keep a somewhat objective approach, I do think the end of the short was a bit maudlin; it seemed kind of odd that the girl, in that situation, would choose to sign âI love youâ â this seemed more heartstring-yanking than something that felt realistic. That said, the rest of the short was really heartbreakingly realistic. Itâs a personal subject for me; deafness runs in my family and my little sister is profoundly deaf. My parents started learning sign language the day she was born and made sure I did, too. I grew up in a truly bilingual household and didnât understand until I was much older that many hearing parents donât do this for their children. At first I was sitting in the theater like âwell, my parents knew it might be a possibility; they were prepared before she was bornâ but then it is revealed that the mother in this short knew of a family history as well; her utter self-involvement and ego become more and more clear throughout the course of the story.
The short presents a very complicated familial relationship that felt very foreign and very familiar to me at the same time, and Iâll admit I cried a lot. Despite some shortcomings in the character writing, it really is a very important topic to talk about. I think I would have preferred that the emphasis be a little less on the nannyâs feelings and a little more on the girl, but it was overall a very good short â and notable for using an actual deaf actress and real BSL.
(cw: Ableism, child abuse)
My Nephew Emmett
This is a dramatic retelling of the experiences of Mose Wright as he tried to save his 14-year-old nephew, Emmett Till. If that name is familiar to you (and if itâs not, google this important case â but guard yourself for some deeply upsetting events and imagery) then you can probably figure out about how this short went. The story is a familiar, if horrifying one, but this film is interesting in that it doesnât show much of the part weâre all familiar with. There isnât that much graphic violence (IIRC, punching a boy in the stomach, manhandling him, and threatening folks with guns is the extent of it), and the very famous pictures of Emmett Till post-attack are not shown. (Though they are evoked in animation during the credits.)
Instead, this film really focuses on the emotional build-up of the event, and very palpably expresses the horrors and tensions of living during this time period in this place while black. There is some absolutely gorgeous imagery in this short, and some of the images of Mose sitting up all night with a gun, waiting for his nephew to come home, will stay with me forever. The acting and cinematography are top-notch, and there is a sort of dignity to these people that is not always afforded in shorts that can easily become misery porn for fascinated gawkers. Really just beautifully, meaningfully done. Media based on true stories like this can sometimes be wooden or insensitive. This was neither. A familiar story, but a breathtaking short.
(Cw: extreme racism, including racial slurs, violence, child death)
The 11 oâclock
In a year full of strong contenders, this Australian short was a glaring weak point. Itâs a film about a psychiatrist who gets a patient who believes heâs a psychiatrist, and the rest of the fairly predictable short is pretty much just whoâs on first shenanigans that get annoying very quickly. Also, after the powerful DeKalb Elementary, it felt uncomfortable poking fun at people with mental illness and using personal delusions for comedy.
But hey, at least it was short.
Watu Wote (All of Us)
Though it was a great year, this was probably my favorite of the shorts. As the film introduced itself as being about racial tensions between Christians and Muslims in Kenya, I was kind of bracing myself for some of the frankly racist/xenophobic content Iâve seen in some past years. However, this short was actually about an event in 2015 during which the militant group Al-Shabaab stopped a bus with an eye towards killing the Christians onboard, but were thwarted by the Muslim passengers who protected their Christian co-riders with, quite literally, their lives.
The short follows a Christian woman who is traveling home to visit with her sick mother, and the trip clearly terrifies her. It is later revealed that her husband and child had been killed by anti-Christian radicals years before and she still views Muslims with a large amount of wary mistrust. She clashes with other passengers on the bus, but she is shocked when the bus is pulled over and the Muslim passengers immediately move to protect and hide her. There are some truly tense scenes during which she is hiding from the militants and Muslim passengers are arguing with them about how un-Muslim their actions truly are. The short is not without bloodshed.
The short could have veered into being preachy at any time, but was instead a very raw depiction of these religious and ethnic tensions in this part of the world. While you could not fault the protagonist for being wary after her experiences, a lot of catharsis is felt when she realizes that there is a large difference between the men who killed her family and the terrified yet heroic passengers on her bus. Itâs a true story and one respectfully told. Iâd heard about the event when it happened, but didnât know all the details; it was nice to have these heroes (particularly the fallen ones) commemorated in a moving short like this. The acting and directing was incredible, and again, I cried. A lot. I cried through basically this entire shorts presentation with a short break during the psychiatrist one, during which I ???ed a lot.
In a time where there is so much anti-Muslim sentiment in the world, I think this film made a very powerful statement, and I was glad to see it. I cannot believe this was a student film.
(Cw: ethnic/religious discrimination, blood, violence, death, child endangerment, mentions of dead children)
Honestly, this was a very strong year for the live-action shorts, and I would happy if any of the non-Australian shorts won.
Who I think will win: My Nephew Emmett or Watu Wote
Who should win: Very, very narrowly, Watu Wote
Animated Shorts
Negative Space
This is a French stop-motion film, and probably my favorite of the animated shorts this year â not that thatâs saying much. It was kind of slight, frankly speaking, but the animation was really inventive and it was a joy to watch, at least, even if it was mostly just a guy relating a brief anecdote about his deceased father. Besides praising the really visually interesting animation, Iâll admit thereâs not much to say about this one.
(Cw: death, you see an open-coffin funeral)
Garden Party
Beautiful animation, for the most part, but like. The entire plot is that a bunch of frogs take over this rich guyâs house after heâs murdered, which isâŚagain, not that much of a plot. I guess the main point of it was ânature doesnât care about riches or human lifeâ and âcorpses are funnyâ, which Iâd tend to agree with and disagree with, respectively. While I appreciated the rising tension as you notice all the creepy details of this broken-into house in the background of cute frogs cavorting, the âpunchlineâ of this short, which was a detailed close-up of the prior residentâs mutilated, bloated corpse thatâd been sitting in the pool is just like. Pointlessly disgusting, and after watching a short about Emmett Till, it felt almost unconscionably callous. Honestly I was like. Mildly interested for most of it, and completely repelled by the end. People talk about this shortâs âdark sense of humorâ and Iâm mostly just reminded of all those edgy assholes I met in college and was happy to never meet again.
(Cw: violence, very, very grotesquely graphic depictions of a corpse)
Lou
This one is Pixarâs inevitable nomination, and itâs very⌠Pixar. Idk, this one was kind of fun to watch, had a typical slightly-maudlin moment of sentimentality at the end, but it really wasnât Pixarâs finest. Itâs a pretty slight film about a bully befriending a sentient lost and found and learning to Be A Good Dude along with some stuff about the cycle of bullying that was dealt with too briefly to really be hard-hitting. What was odd to me while watching it is that I found myself thinking âwow, this animation does not seem up to Pixarâs usual standardâ, which really surprised me. Like, itâs by no means bad! It just reminds me of the work that Pixar was doing several years ago, yâknow? All in all, kind of cute but ultimately forgettable.
Revolting Rhymes, Part 1
(Longer review because this one was a half hour long as opposed to the rest, which were all 5-7 minutes.)
Ugh, okay. So the Academy, in their infinite wisdom, keeps nominating childrenâs specials for this award. Theyâre typically long-winded, rhyming adaptations of childrenâs picture books with subpar animation, and while Revolting Rhymes was better than The Gruffalo or Room on the Broom, I still felt my eyes glazing over. Plus, frankly, I take issue with this âshortâ even being eligible. Itâs not a short. Shorts (in the Oscars) are 40 minutes or less. Revolting Rhymes is a two-episode miniseries that makes up one hour-long childrenâs program. In other words, if you see this at the shortâs presentation, you will only see the first half of the story. (I googled the second half when I got home so I could properly review it.) They just split it into two; that doesnât make it two discrete shorts. But I digress.
So this is your typical fairy tale retelling, and while I liked some aspects of it, others were trite and overdone. It was fun seeing Red Riding Hood go full vigilante, I suppose. It was actually frustrating as hell, especially because of In A Heartbeatâs snub; Revolting Rhymes really seemed like it was about to go to the f/f place with Red and Snow White. I was starting to get interested. These women were fighting for each other, giving each other flowers, embracing, leaning against each other, they eventually move in together⌠Like it was pretty fucking gay. AND THEN THEY NO HOMOâD IT AT THE END. I even looked up the second half to be completely sure. So that was really going to turn me against this film anyway because thereâs nothing more tiring of getting one of those âin the future, they are gal pals and Red grew up and had kids!!â epilogues, especially when an actual queer love story was utterly ignored in favor of subpar shorts.
That aside, though, itâs just overly long, predictable, and kind of dull after a while. Frankly speaking, itâs for children and it doesnât really have great crossover appeal for adults.
(Cw: pretty intense non-graphic violence, some sexist overtones, no homo-ing)
Dear Basketball
This short is just incomprehensible to me. Itâs a short poem by Kobe Bryant thatâs animated by the legendary Glen Keane with music by John Williams. Which should tell you how bewilderingly weird this whole scenario is. The whole time I was like âIs this a vanity project? How did he get such talent to sign on for such a self-indulgent little film? Did he just start throwing money around? Are both of these men closet Kobe fans?â Like I really donât understand what even happened for this film to get made. It was inexplicable.
I guess itâs exactly what youâd expect. Kobe Bryant has written a saccharine poem about how much he has always loved basketball, and how he is now sad he has to give it up. Itâs beautifully animated with a sweeping score. I am deeply confused, and cannot understand why this was even nominated in the wake of the #MeToo movement, considering the allegations against Bryant.
*shrugs???*
(And the highly commended shorts. IN A HEARTBEAT DIDNâT EVEN FUCKING MAKE HIGHLY COMMENDED, FUCK THE OSCARS COMMITTEE TBH.)
Lost Property Office
Another short about a lost and foundâŚ? I mean, okay, why the fuck not, this year is clearly a debacle anyway. This one was basically about a guy who works for the MTA lost and found, and heâs being let go because no one ever claims anything. The film, to be fair, does have a really interesting visual aesthetic⌠But the direction it goes in, again, is just kind of like. Okay. Not exactly emotionally gripping.
(Cw: no one actually commits suicide in this, but the short very clearly utilizes imagery that conjures up suicide)
Achoo
Trite little film about a dragon Iâm supposed to think is cute but I really thought was kind of gross and annoying. Itâs this thing about how this annoying dragon wants to make a fireworks display better than the mean bully dragons and he sneezes goop everywhere and uses chemicals (which feels like cheating..?) and accidentally invents fireworks. Itâs always, uh, awkward when thereâs a piece of animation that does some cutesy depiction of another cultureâs faux âmythologyâ, and this one really didnât particularly do it well.
Weeds
Short about a dandelion (I guess? They didnât really look like dandelions, but oh well.) trying to move from a dead yard to the yard next door full of sprinklers. It dies before it makes it and its seeds float over to the lawn. Then you get some inspirational quote about NEVER GIVING UP and Iâm like okay but it died???? It didnât make it????? Is this some really depressing point about the struggles of immigrant parents or something or did you actually think this was inspirational?
Forgettable.
Who I think will win: Negative Space or Revolting Rhymes Who I think should win: In A Heartbeat
IN A HEARTBEAT WAS ROBBED NEVER FORGIVE NEVER FORGET.

Magdalena Bay /r/Popheads Discord AMA [16/08/2019] Transcript
Q : Did you get your name from this iconic bop? [Sandra : Maria Magdalena]
MB : hahah no, Matt stole it from a literal person named Magdalena Bay // (they called her maggy bay)
Q : whats your biggest influence that sounds nothing like your own music
MB : we love PC Music even though we don't really sound like it
Q : out of everything youâve made, what song is your all-time fave/which one are you the most proud of?
MB : We think Set Me Off is super underrated, but usually our fave is whatever the newest thing we write is
Q : Did Matt take up that offer at the DMV?
MB : hahaha NO
Q : whats the song you guys most had trouble with?
MB : hmmm probably move slow, we re-did the melody and production a few times before we settled on the disco vibes
Q : What made you guys decide to go for shorter song lengths, or was it somethjng that just happened naturally?
MB : We got tired of waiting so long to release official singles, wanted to do low-pressure quick songs that we could get out to our fans sooner!
Q : So like, whereâs Voc pop on Spotify?
MB : hahah does anyone actually like that song?! It was the first pop thing we ever made and it was more of a learning experience for us than an actual song to us
Q : are you planning to tour europe anytime soon?
MB : we'd love to tour just need the right opportunity
Q : what's both of your favourite songs right now? also have you heard any of Caroline Polachek's music
MB : Actually one of our favorite songs right now is Door! Another is Ever Again (Robyn)
Q : one more: do you have any plans for an album in the future? Or are you just going with the flow
MB : yes we have album plans! Maybe next year
Q : Did you have a specific inspiration for Neon's music video, or was it just the whole vaporwave aesthetic in general?
MB : that video we actually didn't do ourselves, we found that archival footage of the couple and had that intro sequence sone but we sent it to our talented friend Matt Lewis who added the whole vaporwave element, we really weren't too aware of that whole world at the time! But it really worked well with Neon
Q : do you like the band Superorganism?
MB : haven't really listened to Superorganism, we'll check them out!
Q : Only thing I donât like is the redbone cover to be honest with you and Iâve gone through your YouTube and soundcloud
MB : lol we respect that
Q : I really like your Redbone cover! What other songs would you like to cover?
MB : we always struggle to think of covers, was thinking of sourcing suggestions on Instagram so maybe we'll do that soon
Q : What is thr most difficult song of the creative process for you guys, is it, say, the lyrics, the melody, the mixing?
MB : probably lyrics, it's not that it's HARD but I get very particular about it and sometimes a little slow haha - Mica
Q : i just have to say, i think i've streamed your one song Only If You Want It a million times. it's such a bop and i think it's a great song to introduce people to your work. what was your inspiration for that song and the retro style music video?
MB : yes we think OIYWI really encapsulates what we're aiming to do musically, really glad you like it! Spice Girls, specifically Say You'll Be There, was a huge inspo. We really love that video but didn't have a plan for it AT ALL when we filmed all that footage of me with our vhs cam hahah so it was a mess but then we figured out the word art aesthetic and the bugs and it all came together
Q : How does it feel to be the highlight of my terrible day? Because once I saw the tweet I felt quite a bit better, plus my magbae playlist keeps me calm
MB : Thank you!! We made that cover ourselves so means a lot, and there's a little nod to each mini song in it which is fun
Q : have you ever covered songs that you decided against releasing?
MB : yes lol how did you know?? we did really weird attempts at promiscuous girl and rod stewart's if you think i'm sexy that will never see the light of day
Q : https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/264810236500639745/609503125677670418/magdalenabay.gif
MB : love the gif!!
Q : if a blackpink stan is called a blink is a magdalena bay stan called a mabay
MB : we think magbae is a good stan name
Q : what is the best/worst thing you've guys have encountered so far in the music industry??
MB : best/worst thing we've encountered in the music industry: one of the best things is finding our stuff being posted on r/popheads, we used to have to do it ourselves hahah, worst thing is dealing with shady industry people
Q : Any plans for shows in the Los Angeles area by the end of the year?
MB : re LA shows: we're working on it! probably yes
Q : Oh shoot i just thought of a very very improtany question i must know - Simply : Cats or Dogs
MB : DOGS
much later // we like cats too just dogs more :/
Q : Did you start making music for the fun of it, or did you actually have asperations to be famous?
MB : we started making music back in high school in a rock band and it just evolved from there. I (mica) never thought I would really do this until i had to graduate college and was like wait!!! I don't want a real job!! // Matt always knew he wanted to work in music
Q : magdalena bay, how would you guys describe your songwriting process?
MB : it's pretty different for each song, only thing that stays the same is that we write lyrics after melody, not all writers do that! but a song can start with a beat or chords or sometimes melody, from either of us!
Q : ooh I actually have one more question! what song of yours has the most meaning to you? whether itâs bc of the inspiration behind it or something else
MB : probably some of the unreleased stuff, but you'll hear it soon! a song called airplane is prob the most personal to me (mica)
Q : what artist(s) would you collab with, if you could pick any?
MB : soo many but Rina Sawayama is near the top of our list
Q : If you could travel back in time and impart one piece of advise to your early teenage selves, what would it be?
MB : START MAKING POP SOONER
Q : So do you sit down for hours and work on thinking of melodies or do they come to you randomly and you're like "whelp, time to record"
MB : both definitely happen, iphone voice memos are key
Q : Actually I do have a question, if y'all had a bigger budget, what would you be doing differently?
MB : blackpink-level music videos
Q : Favorite video games?
MB : We've just started playing video games and love zelda twilight princess but we're dumb and bad at it and are always stuck lol
Q : there are several users here in popheads who are trying to get into the music industry, if you have one tip you can give them, what would it be?
MB : try to do everything you can yourself- from music production to videos to graphics you will learn a lot and be less reliant on other people!! and you'll save money haha
Q : If yall dont thats chill but if yoy do whats your fav song from blackpink
MB : we like the one that goes dudududu
Q : Were you ever worried about a song with hashtag as a title/lyric? Or were you just that damn confident?
MB : yes we were worried lol
Q : would you play Minecraft
MB : don't know anything about it but matt's little sister plays it so sure
Q : we spoke about artists you'd like to work with so...what producers do you get inspiration from / would like to work with?
MB : definitely ag cook, Sophie, grimes, toro, also get a lot of influence from the classics like max martin, quincy jones, pharell
Q : What's one thing people might be surprised to learn about the both of you, respectively?
MB : Maybe that we started music playing in a progressive rock band (the opposite of pop) also matt is an amazing chef and mica is argentinian??
Q : if there is one, favourite Britney Spears album/song?
MB : BLACKOUT we listen to it every day
Q : is there any of your progressive rock stuff on the internet đ§
Also: (you may have answered this already, skip if you have lol) why did you guys make such a genre switch?
MB : Yes but we're not gonna link hahah, and we started making pop because we were at school in different cities and pop is easier to make long distance.... didn't know we'd fall in love with making it! Also mica discovered art angels around that time and that was that
Q : will you continue to be in the server and chat with us? we enjoy having you and hope you'll stick around
MB : thank you!! @hals#0013 yes we'll be around
Q : what do yall liste to outside of pop
