places where you shouldn’t be (where you could be anyway)
“This was a mistake.” Carlos says under his breath. “We’re gonna die here, right? This is where it ends.”
“Yeah,” Jay agrees, equally quietly. “Biggest mistake we’ve made in a while. Nice knowing you, but we’re not getting out of this one.”
Their cart squeals as Evie navigates them smoothly around a turn.
It’s fine. They’re all fine and great and surviving, thriving adults.
Who totally know how to do grocery shopping.
“Do we even have money for this?”
Jay shrugs. “Dude. I don’t know. I didn’t even bring a wallet.”
“What’s in your pockets?”
Jay’s wearing a jacket with at least six hidden pockets. It’s one of the most honest, upstanding items of clothing he owns. “Nothing. Literally. It’s like, physically painful.”
“Take some gum or something,” Carlos says, flicking a silver wrapper at Jay’s head. It falls on the floor. It’s a testament to the way that respectable Auradon adults seem to gloss over the VKs when they’re not actively shouting that nobody in the store even blinks an eye at them. “Nobody's gonna care about that. It’ll keep your hands busy if there’s something to fidget with, yeah?”
“I can’t.”
Carlos shoves the gum into his mouth. “Why the fuck not?”
“Dude. We’re being good. I have to keep being good, or we’re gonna get shipped back and the girls would never forgive us. Do you want that on your conscience? Me being shipped back to the isle forever because I couldn’t keep my hands to myself in the fuckin’ grocery store?”
“Nobody’s gonna care.” Carlos points out. He’s wearing a jacket that’s more rips than fabric, and the four of them are the only people in the store not wearing pastels. “The cameras only cover the door and the health food display. Stores like this bake a certain amount of loss into their profit margins. They don’t give a shit if we take some gum.”
Jay shoves his hands in his pockets. There’s tiny little cheese rounds in the side cooler they’re walking past, and they would fit so neatly in his hand.
He could fit like seven of them in his pocket without blinking.  “Nope. I’m not doing it.”
“I’ll start moving my shit to your pockets.” Carlos says, chomping his gum so aggressively that one of the adults who’s pushing a cart in the opposite direction almost looks at them. “I’m gonna run out of space.”
Jay twirls a bottle opening keychain around his finger before tossing it back on the shelf. “You wouldn’t.”
“Mine’re gonna be full before we get halfway through. You’ve got a lot more space.”
“Yeah,” Jay says, still casually, slouching so that they’re shoulder to shoulder. “Because I’m not fucking four feet tall, and I’m not wearing skinny jeans.”
“You’re just jealous of my incredible calves.” Carlos says, shoulder-checking him towards the side of the aisle. The subsequent noise is a great cover for the transfer between their pockets,  not that they need it. They’re a polished ducking team, and the plastic-wrapped candy bars don’t even crinkle.
Evie’s going to kill them both.

What we Know about Jane part 1;
Tumblr media
Possible debate team member.
Acapella member.
Former mascot.
Cheerleader.
Thinks Lonnie wouldn't hurt a fly.
Thinks Doug is a very talented musician and that working in the mines sounds dirty.
Thinks Leadership is a lot of pressure.
Thinks Carlos is great at Tourney.
It is implied she had a crush on him in d1 according to the books.
Thought the vks deserved a chance in the school of secrets web series, where she can be seen arguing/debating with a girl about it. Which also shows that she can be sassy when she wants to be.
Gets tongue tied easily but eventually gets more confident thanks to the vkw influence.
After the vks showed up, she started to learn how to balance the rules with a dose of reality.
Really wishes someone would take her on a romantic date to the enchanted lake.
She wishes she was more artistic like Mal.
She has good hand writing.
She longs to be able to use her magic instead of just studying it, despite what her mom wants.
Things weren't easy for her growing up due to being Fg (the headmistress)'s daughter, because people always expected her to be good and avoided her at the same time.
She can be very insecure at time.
She once said "Magic is niether good nor evil-- it's all about who's using it."
Her mom taught her that love's a pretty big component in lifting enchantments.
Jane is too shy to ask a boy to dance.
She was shocked to find out Carlos was afraid of dogs but said it made sense after Ben reminded her who's kid he was.
She says 'Bibbidi-Bibbidi mom!' Whatever that means.
Her biggest wish was for people to accept her because she was never "the pretty girl" like Lonnie and Audrey (her words. Not mine. She was always adorable to me).
She has a necklace with her and Carlos's ship name on it (Janlos, I think).
Not use to having friends-- so much so that she thanked the others for being there for her.
She got grounded BIG TIME after Ben's coronation but everyone was pretty cool about it. Even though she was very embarrassed by her behavior.
Finds using magic exhilarating though learned it required alot of concentration after using it for the first time.
Thinks the vks are the best things to happen to Auardon Prep.
Had Mermaid Studies (I think that's the name for the class) with Lonnie and Audrey.
Audrey considered her a friend and felt very betrayed after she became friends with the vk.
Wanted to hang out with all the vks and main aks at the end of the d1 school year.
Might like Fairy Bubble Gum.
Would never turn mice into horses because she feels bad for them.
Likes black licorice over red.
Her biggest pet peeves are being ignored and bad hair days.
Was voted most likely to go on a first date.
Didn't invite Audrey to her birthday party in d1.
She, Ben, Chad, Audrey, and Lonnie all use to eat dinner together evrry night at the same table in the cafeteria before the vks showed up.
Audrey considers her, her ex bestfriend (surprisingly).
Carlos liked her with short hair.
All this info came from The books and wiki. If you want a part 2, let me know and I'll dig up as much info as I can.

Evie’s and Doug’s relationship develops the best, Pt. 2
So, here I go:
So, picking up from where Pt.1 left off, Evie and Doug made up after the coronation and before the after party.
Tumblr media
In Descendants 2, their relationship took the backseat to all the Mal/Ben drama, mostly Mal, Ben was a total idiotic care bear. And that’s okay, I am not complaining at all about Devie being somewhat benched. This is like Disney channel having its own trope of sidelining characters, story arcs and plot lines or just disregarding them completely.
Not the first time, won’t be the last. You get used to it, eventually. (Salty at High School Musical 13 years later, yes, that’s who I am)
You know, as they did with Evie’s intelligence, boxing her into the fashion corner only. Which I enjoyed, but there’s more to Evie than that and she could be both. And they butchered her further in Descendants 3, more on that later as well.
Also, unpopular opinion, Evie and Carlos are much better lead characters with better arcs and Jay fucking deserved better. Mal can go suck it.
Anyway, back to the topic:
Jumping six months later, Evie and Doug are running a business together from her dorm room. Her designing and him handling her finances, you know, like the power couple that they are. Right off the bat, couple goals already.
Tumblr media
Which should show how much they both do trust each other.
That should be surprising, given who their parents are. Again, everyone seems to forget that out of all the AKs/VKs couples shown in the movies, only Doug’s and Evie’s actually come from the same story. They should be enemies. They should not be trusting each other so much to the point where they share a business, let alone be in love. That, I suspect, might have slowed their relationship progress a bit. And it’s a very legit reason to be wary of someone.
Scenes breakdown:
Now, their first scene together hits with a banger right away, them sharing an inside joke.
Tumblr media
Six months into their (unlabeled?) relationship, Doug is shown to still be insecure about being with her. Actually, about HER being with him. Again, Evie is royal (whether Audrey likes it or not), she is ambitious, hardworking and will go places. And he’s, well...
Doug.
Tumblr media
He’s telling her that through her hard work and dedication to her craft, she could be getting everything she had always wanted after all without needing a prince or marrying into it as she was bred and conditioned by her mother to do. That she can get there on her own and she doesn’t need to be a trophy wife. Also, offhandedly telling her that he will help her get there, that they could get there together.
Tumblr media
And her tender, reassuring reply is that she doesn’t need a prince because she has him. Like, come on, that’s all the vindication anyone would ever need.
Tumblr media
I mean, I would love for someone, anyone, to look at me the way Evie looks at him at that moment. Like, boy, you got nothing to worry about, not one thing. Just look at her face, please.
Tumblr media
Honestly, in less than thirty seconds, their relationship progressed more than Mal’s and Ben’s relationship did in that entire movie. I mean they had a conflict and they solved it in half a minute while Mal spent the entire movie erasing everything good about her already-established character. Ben deserves better.
So, moving on.
The next development in their relationship arc comes in a scene with no Evie whatsoever. Doug encounters Jay and Carlos and asks if they had seen Evie. Let’s break this one down, yeah?
Tumblr media
Doug is shown to be insecure about being the lesser of the two in his relationship with Evie and believes she deserves better. He is not the most confident individual, directly in contrast with Evie, who has this ridiculously confident aura around her.
And Jay and Carlos lying to him about Evie’s whereabouts couldn’t have helped. Especially because I believe at that point, Doug had become friends with Jay and Carlos to some degree. He wasn’t only questioning his relationship with Evie, but his friendship with Jay, Carlos and by association, possibly, Mal.
So, anyway, the crew got King Care Bear back and they arrive to Auradon prep the next morning. And Doug shows up, bowtie gone, disheveled and sleep-deprived to question whether Evie was seeing someone else or not.
Tumblr media
He was in panic over this, and she replies earnestly that she wasn’t, in fact, seeing someone else and she was on the isle with the crew saving Ben. And kind of calls him stupid for ever thinking that.
And Doug doesn’t even care about the whole Ben thing. which I find awfully hilarious.
To sum up:
Slow progress aside, Doug believed in Evie’s business, creativity and ability to be financially stable enough to buy her own castle before it even crossed her own mind. Just because he knew it was something she always wanted. He supported her wholeheartedly, to the point where he was okay working with her, handling finances and deliveries. And probably investing as well.
The movie did go over Doug’s very obvious insecurities when it comes to his relationship with her. Made it obvious that he was flawed, normal and human, more so than any of the other characters. He gets jealous because he sees himself as the less in the relationship and his reaction is justified, to be honest.
I mean, this is Evie we’re talking about. One doesn’t just LET Evie go, that’s stupid. You don’t lose people like her. No one deserves Evie, she’s too good for all of them. But it’s not about deserving.
I believe they were already in love at this point (such a healthy relationship, too), but reached a mutual mental (or off-screen, really) decision to buckle down, take things slow and see where things go. This is because of who they are and how they came to be, not because of anything else. Actual brain cells, here.
And not everyone is Mal and Ben. Nothing against them, but they are under pressure, with their relationship being public and all. There’s always a sense of urgency with those two.
And with these gifs I rest my case:

Off topic, but please!!
Has anyone noticed that, aside from being a movie musical, Did I Mention and Be Our Guest are the only canon-confirmed numbers? Be Our Guest was performed for family day as some form of (cringe) entertainment.
BUT Did I Mention is the only one that was deadass performed into a legit microphone? And then rearranged for the proposal. Am I the only one seeing Ben rushing out from the dressing room before the game to find Doug to ask him if he could have the band play it after the game? And then a year later gathering everyone else, letting them know he was proposing and then being all like; “Doug, I need you.”
Doug is Ben’s wing man, and that is that.

Left Behind But Not Forgotten
Tumblr media
Title: Left Behind But Not Forgotten
Fandom: Disney Descendants 2
Pairing: Gil x Reader
Warnings: Sad!Gil ??? nothing else really it’s just sadness and depressing fluff
Description: When Gil, Harry, Uma, and Dizzy are brought to Auradon, Gil suddenly isn’t his happy-go-lucky self. The Core Four and their AK friends think setting him up with a princess will help, but his best friends think they might know what’s wrong. (Might make this one more than one part idk we’ll see. Let me know what you guys think.)
A/N: I SWEAR TO GOD IF I GET ONE MORE HARRY HOOK THING MIXED IN WITH A SEARCH FOR MY UNDER-APPRECIATED BEAN OF A HUSBAND- I’m sorry, I get that Harry’s this cute and edgy bad boy and I get that he’s super popular, but it gets super annoying when you look up one character and 80% of the results are of a completely different character!! Also, why is Gil so under-appreciated? He is so pure and so cute and such an innocent soul and just such a beautiful human being like ??? Dylan Playfair too like ??? give him some love would you? (If you couldn’t tell already, this whole story is just one giant Gil Appreciation Post)
When the limousine first pulled up to the enormous castle known as Auradon Prep, Gil had been excited. He’d been on the Isle all his life and going somewhere completely new was a thrilling concept. His bags were packed the minute he had received his letter from King Ben, and he was happy to be rid of his old life with his not-so-great family. However, it wasn’t long before his friends noticed something off. From the minute they first stepped out of the limo, and with every new sight they were shown afterwards, Gil would have the biggest grin on his face but he’d also turn around frantically- as if looking for someone- and frown when he saw no one there.
Anyone who knew Gil knew that there being anything other than a happy expression gracing his features was out of the ordinary. To make matters worse, it wasn’t just on the first day that this happened. For the next several weeks, Gil was seen sulking around campus, offering only half-hearted smirk to those who earned it. Surprisingly, Mal and her group were the first to be concerned.
“Have you guys seen Gil lately?” Carlos asked one day at lunch.
“Are we even sure that’s Gil?” Mal asked, arching an eyebrow, “He’s just been so... so not himself since he got here. It’s like he’s a totally new person.”
“A totally new person who clearly needs some cheering up.” Evie agreed.
“You’re not gonna...do something? Are you?” Jay winced slightly.
“Maybe I will! Think about it; when we first got here, what made us more comfortable with living outside of the Isle?”
When she received no response, Evie pressed on, “The people! Our people! Jay, Carlos, you guys hated it here, but then you joined the tourney team and suddenly you never wanted to leave! I’ll admit, I didn’t like it that much at first either. I mean, I certainly liked it more than you guys, but still I wasn’t 100% sold on living in Auradon until I had Doug by my side! And M, you hated this place more than any of us! And now look at you, a Lady of the Court, and all because you had Ben! I know it’s crazy, but maybe if we got Gil an Auradon friend, or maybe even an Auradon girlfriend, maybe he’ll go back to his usual self.”
“I don’t know, E.” Mal cringed, “It’s a long shot, but I know there’s no stopping you so, good luck.”
“Thanks, M. Feel free to come find me if you guys wanna help.”
With that, Evie stood up and sent out a mass email to every girl in her contact list- fashion clients, friends, lab partners, everyone- as she walked off. Little did she know that Harry and Uma had overheard her conversation, or at least the part where they mentioned Gil’s name a bunch of times.
“Does she really think a girl will help Gil cheer up?” Uma scoffed.
“She sure seems to think so.” Harry shrugged, “He just seems a wee bit homesick to me.”
“Homesick?” Uma arched an eyebrow, “For the Isle?”
“Well, maybe not for the Isle itself, but he certainly misses something. Or- perhaps- someone?”
Noticing the hints of a smirk in his voice, Uma squinted at him, “Harry Hook, what are you up to?”
“Nothing! Nothing. I’m just saying, King Ben brought over a lot of kids, but maybe he left out someone Gil was especially fond of.”
“You think Gil had a crush on someone who’s still on the Isle?”
“It’s possible, isn’t it? I mean, he is the only one of us with a proper heart, after all.”
“I guess you’re right.” Uma chuckled, “I guess you’re right.”
However, Harry wasn’t right- but he wasn’t wrong either. Gil did miss a certain someone back on the Isle of the Lost but (Y/N) Heart, child of the Queen of Hearts, was more than just a crush to the son of Gaston. Normally, you stayed cooped up in the family ‘castle’- as per your mother’s orders- but every teen has their rebellion, and yours was slipping out every so often to explore the island.
That’s how you’d met- Gil and you; Once again, Gil had said something that Uma apparently hadn’t liked (Gil still doesn’t know what he did wrong), and was kicked out of Ursula’s Fish and Chips Restaurant to sit and think about what he’d done... again. As he sat on the front steps, staring out into the dark of the night, he could have sworn he saw something move.
“Hello?” He had called, to no one in particular.
That was when you’d stepped into the light, peering at him curiously, “What are you doing out here?”
Gil shrugged, “Got kicked out for a bit. It happens sometimes, but it’s okay. I know they still like me... in their own way.”
“It’s a little dark to be out here all by yourself.”
“I should be okay. I’ve done it before.”
“Don’t you ever get lonely though?”
Gil had frowned a bit at this. No one had ever asked if he got lonely when he got kicked out, “I guess I do sometimes, but they usually send for me before it gets too bad.”
“Well, do you mind if I sit with you?” you had asked, stepping forward, “So you don’t get lonely?”
“Sure!” when he had smiled, you noticed that it was the brightest one you’d ever seen, “I’m Gil, by the way.
“Gil.” You repeated, “I’m (Y/N).”
You sat talking with him for hours and from there, the two of you were secretly inseparable- well, until he left for Auradon. But no matter how far from you he was, Gil still remembered every detail of that first night as if it had only happened hours ago; the way your hair framed your face, the way the fabric of your jacket fit your form almost perfectly, the softness with which you spoke to him. Everything about you was perfect to him, and for once he was certain that his dad was wrong. Over the time you’d known each other, he had won you over with his humor and his kind heart- not with his looks nor with his confidence. Despite what he’d always been taught about women, Gil was yours in the purest way possible, regardless of being from an island full of villains. You’d agreed to keep your relationship a secret, to keep each other safe from your parents, but that didn’t stop it from being the happiest either of you had ever been. It certainly didn’t stop him from missing you more than anything.
Gil didn’t know about Evie’s plan- which was already in full swing with auditions set to find the right girl- but it didn’t matter. No one could come close to you. You were practically everything to him, and no one could change that. No amount of tourney games and bad jokes could make him smile for longer than a moment, when he knew you were stuck in the worst of conditions. No amount of friends would fill the whole in his heart left by missing his soulmate... and no amount of pretty princesses could stop him from sulking in every class with one thought on his mind:
“God, I miss you, (Y/N).”

Everyone needs a hobby Descendants Headcanons
Hey everyone! I had a couple of thoughts on what the AKs and VKs do in their spare time and so I thought I'd give them all hobbies for fun! I didn't use what has already been established as things they do, because what's the fun in that?
Mal- we know that Mal is quite artistic, but something she keeps quiet is how much she likes to pencil draw architecture. She appreciates how intricate and intimate it feels to draw something that someone else has created. She can be seen sometimes sitting on various grassy areas and drawing different views of the castle.
Ben- Ben is a very busy guy being king and all, so he really just wants to sit and chill and watch TV if he gets some time to himself.
Evie- Since learning has become one of her biggest skills, she wants other VKs to be able to discover their own aptitude. She uses some of her free time to tutor her friends in her best subjects, and uses the rest of it to study extracurricular subjects like behavioral science.
Doug- Doug is captain of the dance team and is in marching band, but he's trying to teach himself piano when he can.
Jay- Jay is athletic and he's on the Tourney and ROAR teams, but he's also on the dance team with Doug. He's not classically trained at all, so he practices technique using online videos and Doug's help. He keeps it relatively quiet though because he's afraid of what the other rotten four will think.
Lonnie- Lonnie is from an athletic family to most of her physical pursuits come easily to her with a little practice. She really likes running though, and especially enjoys that she can do it in solitude or with others, depending on her mood.
Carlos- Carlos has always been a bit of a backyard engineer, and with access to more tools and supplies in Auradon, he likes to build robots. So far he’s pretty much a one man show in building his toys, but hes always showing them off to try to get people to start a robotics club.
Jane- Jane is another that’s very busy with various school committees and such, so during her free time she enjoys solitude more than anything else. She tends to like to take naps when she can.
Chad- Chad, being the proud, vain guy he is, is always trying to make himself more confident. He likes to practice giving speeches because it makes him feel powerful. He also likes to spend time with his parents because he’s dead-set on becoming royalty and wants to be a good ruler like them.
Audrey- Audrey loves being popular, and apparently being pampered, but being popular is hard work. She really likes to read because it lets her get out of herself for a while. She’s a bit partial to audio books because it lets her get other stuff done at the same time.
Gil- When they came to Auradon, Gil loved how different the food was. He loved trying everything. Uma taught him how to cook his own eggs the way she did on the Isle, and he took to cooking like a fish to water. He gets up early to help in the kitchen and learn, and also helps with the two other school meals each day. (Lunch prep is his independent study period)
Uma- Uma has always been a leader, and has always stood up for her and her own. Turns out, she’s quite good at helping people, and works with Jane in student government as the vice class prez. She also assists Ben and Evie with the VK reform program.
Harry- Harry spent his entire childhood looking out to sea and dreaming of sailing away. While he always knew Auradon was a new world, he didn’t expect how much it struck him. He’d always surrounded himself with beauty where he could find it, but Auradon was laden with visual appeal. He’s so amazed that sometimes he just stops and stares at  the smallest or normal things. He became a bit obsessed with the natural beauty of the world around him and began taking pictures with his phone. He especially loved taking candid pictures of his friends, sunsets, and sunlight coming through the trees. Ben found out about the hundreds of pictures that he had on his new phone, and made sure that Harry got a good camera. Harry often will break curfew  but rarely gets in trouble for it because Ben knows he’s not making trouble and sticks up for him.
BONUS! Dizzy- Dizzy is only 11, but she loves music. She enrolls in the music program and has a hard time deciding what instrument she wants to play. Eventually she decides on percussion because she can play a bunch of different things. She wants to join the dance team (she has a little crush on Jay), but she can’t until 9th grade.

Do you like Avatar? Legend of aang and legend of korra? so if you like it who do you think of the descendants universe could be the avatar and what element could each character masters? like Uma and Mal are obviously Water and Fire but what element could Evie, Jay, Carlos, Ben, Harry, Gil, Doug , Lonnie, Jane, Audrey etc master?
I love Avatar! I didn’t get to watch much of Korra, so all I really know about that one is that Korrasami is the bomb dot com.
Uma and Mal are definitely water and fire, but let’s take a look.
Evie - Evie strikes me as a water bender based on her desire to change and figure out who she is on her own terms. The agency to control her life and her surroundings is what separates her from an air bender for me. Both air benders and water benders are adaptable, but water benders like a little more control over what happens rather than take the path of least resistance.
Jay - I’m gonna say either a fire bender because he tends to deal with his situations forcefully, trying to bull right through people messing with him.
Carlos - Carlos strikes me as an air bender, taking the path of least resistance and adapting so he can be happy.
Ben - I’m gonna say he’s an earth bender - he’s patient, decisive and has a lot of endurance (think of all the heat he got for bringing in VKs and he went with it anyways).
Harry - Same as Jay, either a fire bender or water bender. I kinda wanna say water bender because the hook plus the sword adds an element of adaptability.
Gil - Probably a slightly more aggressive air bender - he’s mostly a people pleaser, which speaks to the least resistance part....but the people he wants to please are his friends, who are pirates, so.
Doug - I see Doug as an air or water bender. Very adaptable, kinda sneaky. I think he might lean slightly towards water because he wants to change certain circumstances, as opposed to the more ‘go with the flow’ air bender.
Lonnie - I see Lonnie as an earth bender. She’s faced her challenges with strength, endurance, and decisiveness - ideal earth bender.
Jane - A less confident earth bender? She decisively knows what she wants, she’s gone through a lot of problems with herself and it’s implied she’s endured a fair bit of bullying. She’s taken her chances to fix things though, without her mom’s approval, and I think that works for her. Emotional strength.
Audrey - She’s a fire bender, no doubt. She tries to get what she wants via emotional force rather than physical, like trying to get Ben to change his mind or shunning the VKs. And there’s the time she straight up led the AKs to rescue Mal and Evie from Zevon, so there’s that.

What about the Aks? What would they be like, why would they turn?
I actually have an AU in my head, “Something Wrong In Auradon,” where Maleficent wins out due to Auradon’s incompetence, and all the AK’s are “corrupted” in some way.
Ben would become incredibly cynical and jaded, a “Knight in Sour Armour.”  and Ben turns into a pessimistic, violent, and above all depressed version of Batman. Instead of lurking in the shadows and dropping down when you least expect it, though, he walks around with his torn clothes and his jacket thrown over his shoulders; the moment the latter comes off, you better HOPE those horns of his aren’t pointed at you when he transforms into a Beast.
(For those curious, yes, Maleficent cursed him with the same hex as Beast had.)
In the AU, he turned “Evil” because of how quickly the other AK’s split apart and descended into warring factions after Maleficent stole them all from the Isle of Hope; seeing the worst of his fellow “Goodies” and trying and failing to reunite them can make anyone dead inside, but like Mad Max, there’s a part of who he was that just refuses to die, no matter how many jaws he breaks, limbs he twists, and concussions he causes.
In Canon, he turns “Evil” just before taking the VK’s over, when during his teenaged years of reflection and ever-expanding horizons, he realizes just how empty, how vacuous, how meaningless the lives of everyone in Auradon is, living day by day to perpetuate the same “sunny, happy, cheerful” lives they’ve had before the Great Uniting, just with more internet except if you live in Camelot which King Arthur apparently has the power to keep in the Dark Ages. And worse yet, that everyone is fine with this life of unequal wealth, power imbalances, and a public kept peaceful by their lack of ambition for anything better than what is their “lot in life.”
Chad would become even more of an insufferable, arrogant, and selfish bastard than he already is, fancying himself a “White Knight” who steps on people, demeans others, and treats them as ways to feed his own ego much like Gaston did. I wouldn’t put it past him to have a constant rivalry with Ben, the two of them essentially being polar opposites: one is dour, sarcastic, and cruel while actually defending the weak and helpless and maintaining what little order is left in the school; the other is sunny, polite, and “kind” while handpicking whoever gets saved and leaving the rest to fend for themselves as “everyone needs to learn how sometime.”
In the AU, he’s corrupted by Maleficent stroking and abusing the worst parts of his ego. In the canon, this would likely happen after the VK’s constantly overshadow him in everything, and in his jealousy and attempts to defend his ego than accept that he’s not as great as the thinks he is, he starts to develop an over-inflated sense of importance, similar to Jordan.
Audrey would become an extremely shallow codependent, like Trixie from the Fairy Odd Parents, desperately keeping up appearances and constantly having a posse of boys (and sometimes girls) to tell her she’s “pretty.” Her sense of self-confidence will be even more fragile than it already is in the canon show (and seeing just how BROKEN she can get by missing her big song number in Wicked World shows she’s not even an eggshell--those are a LOT tougher than she is), and the anxiety attacks will be less “Woe is me!” and more “What is WRONG with you people?!”, violently lashing out at everyone and blaming them for anything and everything that goes wrong in her life than ever taking responsibility for herself.
In the AU, again, she’s corrupted by the loss of the unconditional love of her parents and the rest of the adults on the Isle of Hope, and desperately seeking approval and love from her peers who themselves are lost and chasing all the wrong things, as they are both teenagers and being manipulated by Maleficent. In canon, this is actually already the case, if toned down because Disney.
Jane would probably become Maleficent’s new apprentice, her abusing her low self-esteem, her desperate need to be special in some way, and her lack of a personality despite being introverted and shy to turn her into a new Mini-Mal, because the original Mal was already getting sick of being Evil for Evil’s Sake. Maleficent hopes that a full-blooded fairy like herself would be a better successor, and so far, with Jane throwing herself into the business of being EVIL with glee and shocking, terrifying competence, it’s working.
In the AU, again, all Maleficent’s fault, but her inability to master her magic and the ever shorter patience of her fellow “Goodies” when she can’t provide comfort or wave away all their problems certainly doesn’t help. In canon, this’d probably be Jane not taking Mal’s advice after the coronation, learning how to make the better hair spell again, and becoming Evil all on her own through her issues finally coming to a dark, dark crescendo.
Lonnie would likely turn into her own Chinese Warlord, using Shang and Mulan’s hot-blooded natures and determination to try and fight for own little niche in the world. She’ll likely be like her father in being absolutely MERCILESS to her followers, demanding only the best, but ultimately being there to defend and fight with those that don’t wash out by the end of the training montage. While she won’t be nearly as malevolent as the other corrupted VK’s, she’s certainly no one’s friend, either.
In the AU, she breaks like Ben when the Goodies all begin to turn on each other when Maleficent’s sabotage, manipulation, and their own issues get too much. In canon, she probably becomes this cynical after trying to bridge the gap between the VK’s and the AK’s, being rejected and vilified by both sides one too many times, and deciding to strike out on her own path if she’s going to be rejected by both sides.
Ask another time for Jordan, Allie, and Doug, my brain’s run out of steam for the moment.

Week 3 Match-up Previews
The weeks just tumble off the calendar as no sooner has week 2 settled into the history books but week 3 roars into view. The landscape is certainly shifting and the D’s are hard especially on receivers. So far this season there have been only 11 100 yard receiving performances. Compare that with the 30 from 2016 and 26 from 2015 and the cornerbacks are clearly the new studs in town.
Game of the Week: Low Fell Beckham Juniors v Get Your Tyreek On
It’s the battle of the egos in the game of the week as GYTO gets used to sitting in the dizzying heights of first place. Desperate to knock him off his lofty perch is LFBJ as he seeks to build on his impressive week 2 victory. A quick glance over the two lineups and its a tough one to call. Both sides boast impressive talent, especially at running back. Following a pre-season trade, this match-up sees Sir Tom Brady returning to his former club. His stand out performance against the Saints last week reaffirmed his status as an elite QB but with the news that Rex Burkhead may miss out and Gronk hobbled with a possible groin issue, the Patriots have turned to their waterboy to fill in at wide receiver. Brandon Cooks and Phillip Dorsett have already texted their mates to see if they fancy a game, should any more wide-outs go down. Tyreek will seek to maintain his streak for another week as he goes up against Zeke. LFBJ will be hoping that Elliott smashes the Redskins front seven like they’re his missus as he aims to pick up from his dismal showing in week two.

Game 2 ABC Easy as RG3 v AK-49
The second match-up of this week pits old enemies ABC Easy as RG3 against AK-49. With franchise names that resemble a bowl of alphabet soup, the target for these two teams is to hit that elusive 100 point mark. Kendrick’s line-up reads like a cry for help as he continues his abusive relationship with Lamar Miller and Kirk Cousins. Always trying to convince himself that this time they’ll change only to be let down time and time again. Seeking to capitalise on his self-harm is RG3 as he keeps faith with Gillislee at RB even though it is never easy to trust a Patriots running back. Gillislee is like the fat lad that comes along to five-a-side, mooching by the goal-line ready to tap it in. Time will only tell how long Shady McCoy lasts in RG3′s line-up as the Bills seem intent on running him into an early grave as they opted this season not to field any other offensive players in order to pip the Jets as the worst team in the world.
Tumblr media
Easy as opening a tin of soup.
Game 3 Clam Crowder v Dan’s Dogs - Woof Woof Woof
Its the pack-up and go home game next, as last place Dan’s Dogs faces off against top seven team, Clam Crowder. The loser of this match will see themselves in the fantasy equivalent of bottom at Christmas with a measly 0-3 record awaiting one team. In the unlikely event of a tie, the winner will be determined by our glorious leader, the commissioner, in a completely unbiased ruling determined only by him. The Dogs team reads like a hospital admission sheet as at least half the team holds some injury designation. One such starter is Large Benjamin who did not practice during the week. Dan will be hoping he can overcome his issues on the road, the quarterback has an arm like a cannon but is about as mobile as a tree. Leaving some big names on the bench, the Dogs must have a good feeling about Adam Thielen as the receiver keeps messrs Cooper and Marshall at arms length. Clam Crowder is hoping (he really is) that it is third time lucky for Le’Veon Bell against the wobbly Bears and that this time around as he hopes to avoid the inevitable tirade of “just fucking do something you lazy prick” come Sunday evening.

Big Ben getting practice reps in.
Game 4 Tebows Before Hoes 3000 v This Drew Shall Pass
Ah, Jordan Howard. Here we are again. How many more chances will you get? There seems to be something inherently self-destructive built into Chicago running backs as their time in the limelight is fleeting at best. Previous running backs to wear the middle 20′s include Matt Forte who is serving two years community service over in New Jersey and Jeremy Langford whose week began with being promoted from the Ravens practice squad, cut, re-signed only to be sent to IR today and will likely be cut once again. The way things are turning out for former Bears ball carriers, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Howard flipping burgers in MacDonald’s before the season closes. At least TDSP is keeping faith with the lad, which is a much needed boost to his confidence. For Drew it’s his receiving corps that hold the key to victory. For Crin however, playing the now Patriots employed Brandon Cooks must feel like trying to stay friends with an ex. It has the familiarity of the former relationship but you can’t help but feel jealous that they’re now with someone a little bit better. Tebows will be taking this contest down to the wire as his skillful tactic of playing two running backs not playing until late Sunday will cause sleepless nights in both camps. Tebows can hopefully rely on the youngest Baldwin brother, Doug, to put on an Oscar worthy performance in his quest for victory this weekend.

Evie’s and Doug’s relationship develops the best, Pt. 3.2: The Movie
I feel like I keep postponing this. I find it hard to analyze a movie where the only consistency shown is a birthday cake. I love it, but like, I kinda strongly dislike it as well. Anyway…
For part 3.2 to make more sense to you, check out the previous parts here:
Pt.1: https://wezzaner.tumblr.com/post/186775140063/evies-and-dougs-relationship-develops-the-best
Pt.2: https://wezzaner.tumblr.com/post/186827407103/evies-and-dougs-relationship-develops-the-best
Pt.3.1: https://wezzaner.tumblr.com/post/186971661403/evies-and-dougs-relationship-develops-the-best
Now that this is out of the way, fair warning, this is going to be long...
As noticed in pt. 2, there was no character analysis for Evie and Doug. That is because in my timeline (that I will fight to the death to prove), it’s been only 3-4 months between D2 and D3, so I thought I can do it in one go. Let’s see how Evie and Doug changed, yeah?
Evie:
Tumblr media
Wow. Talk about character development done absolutely right. I have been silently observing the fandom for four years and I have yet to come across anyone who even slightly dislikes Evie. A huge part of that is attributed to Sofia Carson, I have no doubt about that. This woman will go places.
As far as development, Evie was such a complex character from the start. Far more complex than any of the other VKs, not including Carlos whose abuse history remained strictly in the books and was only hinted at in the movies in two lines across the board. The Evie we got in D2 and D3 came a long way from D1 Evie.
Evie had a reputation of being a complete vain flirt, a selfish heart-breaker who wouldn’t hesitate to use her looks to get what she wanted. Somehow, she remains sort of shy, reserved and not always speaking her mind. That’s probably due to her, Jay and Carlos being accustomed to blindly follow Mal.
She was brought up entitled by her mother, to marry a prince for the social status and riches. She was bred to be a perfect trophy wife, the fairest of them all, with the concept of beauty trumps personality and smarts embedded deep into her brain.
But somehow, somehow, she ends up being a well-mannered, smart girl who is practically good at everything except being true to herself. She, along with Carlos, end up being the sensitive, level-headed ones, not the ones to lash out unless super necessary and probably regarded as the easiest VKs to be around. They’re also the two mature ones, no matter what Mal likes to think.
Throughout the first movie, Evie shows her good heart, her fashion and style and finally, her longing to be an Auradon girl. Her longing to get away from the isle, explore who she is and who she really wants to be.
For Evie, Doug wasn’t why she chose good. And I love that. Doug standing up to her marked the time she started being hesitant about the plan to steal the wand and his passivity during the events of family day reignited her determination. He wasn’t her purpose; he wasn’t her motive, but he was a catalyst.
Her supporter and helper. A believer.
Next time we saw Evie, she had evolved so much already in so little time. She was more comfortable with who she became, more in tune. She was shown to be outspoken, confident, calm and collected. She was very open and had chemistry with everyone she interacted with. Also, following Mal blindly became a thing of the past, Evie down right scolded her at some point.
On the isle, she stepped into the role of the leader effortlessly, I personally always thought that Jay would be the second in command. She was dominant, calm under pressure and fluidly returned to be a support to Mal once she was found. And she was content being s support. Her actions spoke louder than any words, portraying her as the fiercely loyal sister anyone would dream to have. Loyal to the point where she would give up her life in Auradon, complete with a boyfriend and a booming business.
Let’s not mistake her loyalty to Mal, someone she regards as family, to her being indifferent to Doug. Family comes first, Evie’s future family will be lucky to have her. Speaking of Doug, Evie knows the guy, their slow and steady relationship proves to be suitable for them. She oh-so-easily defused his frantic confrontation, caused by a problem that was arguably created by her family. By Mal having an identity crisis and fleeing, she unknowingly forced the rest to go after her. Then Carlos and Jay, people who Doug became friends with, lied straight to his face.
Her good heart was once again evident in her being inspired by Dizzy and proposing the idea of bringing more VKs from the isle.
It is worth noting that she also gave up practicing magic (her mother practiced black magic, she had powers) and donated her magic mirror to the museum.
Finally, in the third movie, Evie is basically the ultimate good. A selfless protector in every sense of the word. She kept asking Carlos if he was okay, brought the Smee kid back inside the limo during Hades’s “attack” and constantly had Celia protectively behind her.
The one time she wasn’t protective of someone, she was stepping up into the leader’s shoe when Uma and Mal kept going at each other during the confrontation with the suits of armor. And when she casually directed everyone on what to do when Mal was, briefly, an old hag.
She was the moderator, trying to constantly rally everyone together, breaking up fights and getting everyone to get along. She was successful too, with her ice breaker activity. You can see Hary starting to respond, she got through to the unhinged maniac. And later, Gil carried on her game with Jay, she got through to him as well.
And of course, Evie still had the VKs on the isle on the forefront of her mind. They were still priority, the incident with Hades never swayed her.
The most prominent trait of Evie that is glaringly obvious through D2 and D3 is her selflessness. A direct opposite to her in D1. A trait she obviously picked up from Doug, he inspired her.
Now Doug:
Tumblr media
Doug has come a long way as well, though it’s very subtle. He started out as an insecure, somewhat shy kid. He is a son to a sidekick, and he was embracing that and had no problem with it. He was friends with practically everyone, closest to Ben though. However, being friends with royals and heroes had added tremendously to his insecurities, making him see himself as less.
But among all the AKs, Doug always came off as the most welcoming and least reluctant when dealing with the VKs. He was selfless, going out of his way to stand up for Evie with no ulterior motive, since he had already somewhat been rejected by her at that point.
In the second movie, Doug was even more comfortable around the VKs. He became friends with all of them now and trusted them. That was why he was hurt and sent into a frenzy when Jay and Carlos lied to him. He considered them friends. His insecurities came rushing back, seeing himself as not worthy of Evie and that was why he thought she might be seeing someone else. He also saw himself as unworthy of the friendship with Jay and Carlos, also Mal with association, when they lied straight to his face.
In D3, Doug’s insecurities were almost gone at that point. He became close to Jay, Carlos, Jane, Mal and even closer to Ben. He was protective of Jane when Auradonians freaked out during Hades’s incident. He was so laid back in almost all of the scenes.
When he woke up from the sleeping spell, he was conversing with Gil, a new VK he just met. The only possible background information Doug has on Gil was that Gil kidnapped Ben, the King Ben, and fought the core four on the isle. And there he was just standing casually engrossed in conversation with him. Also, towards the end, he was hanging out with Evie, Uma and Harry. And was later dancing with Uma and Harry as well, no Evie in sight.
That leads me to believe that Doug is one of the most accepting people in the Descendants franchise, along with Lonnie. And somewhat Ben, he was apprehensive when he saw Gil and Harry but for good reason. That is why I will be using this part of my analysis to not only go over all the Doug/Evie relationship moments, but will leave you with some of his platonic interactions as well.
Moving on, scenes breakdown:
The first Evie and Doug interaction happens off-screen. We only get a snippet of it behind the scenes, where we see Evie holding onto Doug and leading the band to the front of the welcoming committee. We never know what they are talking about, only one sentence of the conversation.
Tumblr media
Again, what Evie says actually plays well into their relationship, its history and dynamic. Doug had her back since the moment they met. As I said, he is her supporter, he believes in her. I had hoped this would be included in the behind the scenes, deleted scenes or even the bloopers videos but we never got it.
Then they are standing with the crowd, waiting for Ben and Mal to show up. Doug, being Ben’s best best friend and future best man, plays a rearranged version of the song Ben sang to Mal to declare his love for her. Best friend goals, everybody.
Also, squad goals! Look at that support!
Tumblr media
After the music died and as Ben proposes, Evie is clearly seen standing with her hands interlocking over Doug’s shoulder, leaning into him as they await Mal’s response.
Tumblr media
They separate as the squad congratulate each other. And Doug and Carlos hug twice, solidifying themselves in my mind as very close friends and marking the first sign of Doug’s character progress. Also, vindication to my theory that the reason for D2’s confrontation was more than just Evie’s disappearance and that it was fueled by Carlos and Jay lying to him. He’s more than just Evie’s boyfriend or an acquaintance to them, he’s a very close friend now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evie’s and Doug’s attention goes back to the newly engaged couple as they stare, dare I say longingly, at what Mal and Ben have together and where they are now. And this conversation takes place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Doug starts the conversation with a little joking jab at his and Evie’s own relationship. You can see how Evie picked up on his subtle comparison and how eager she is to blurt the words, the words almost flying out of her mouth, like she can’t hold them in anymore.
Now Doug’s response… There are a lot of ways to interpret that. My personal favorite is that Doug understood what she was trying to say. Here’s how: I have already established time and time again that of all the couples in the franchise, Evie and Doug have more reasons to take things slow than anyone else. For a brief recap, they both come from the same story, meaning that their parents were direct enemies. His father and uncles killed her mother. Add to that Evie being a past flirt and a heart breaker, Doug’s personal insecurities and the fact that Evie didn’t know what love is until she made it to Auradon and boom, you’re there.
Knowing Doug’s selfless and caring nature, I’m willing to bet money he had already come to terms with his feelings for Evie a while ago, perhaps even during the first movie. But knowing her history, their history, he chose to be patient and considerate. He chose to hold his tongue and not say anything, so he wouldn’t be pressuring Evie into anything she wasn’t ready for.
To me, his hopeful look as he waits for Evie to finish her words and then his “me too” afterwards is him subtly telling her that he loves her as well. He read into what she tried to say and saw her history and insecurities coming back and chose again to not pressure her, but to try to subtly reassure her.
They share a look, a nod and they both look away.
It just wasn’t their time yet.
Their brief awkward moment gets cut short when Ben and Mal join the group. Mal runs to her sister and Ben flies towards his bachelor party group, stating the obvious because he is a cinnamon roll and gets swamped into a group hug by all his best friends.
Tumblr media
As Mal steps up to her future parents in law, Doug and Jay can be seen hugging in the background. Also bonus Ben/Evie on the right, they lock hands briefly as they pass by each other. Because why not, their friendship in D2 was one of the moments in the franchise.
Tumblr media
Further proving that Doug’s a big part of the group, he joins in as they mock Mal and her soon to be acquired status. He could be seen further left throughout the scene. Jane is there too; behind Carlos and she also joins in the shenanigans.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Originally, I was planning to end the proposal scene with this gif of Evie turning around to wave at her boyfriend before leaving.
Tumblr media
But then I found this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is during the Hades incident when Fairy God Mother is trying to maintain order and failing miserably. Doug is obviously very protective of Jane, keeping her close during the chaos. He only leaves her when he hands her over to one of the guards, who is sure to keep her safe, then he turns around and tries to direct the herd of panicking people. That was very protective and sweet of him, and also not the only moment he shares with Jane.
After that, Doug is only mentioned once until they’re back at Evie’s starter castle. The one Doug helped her find and purchase.
Tumblr media
Irrelevant but like, poor Jay!
Anyway, next time we see Doug, it’s way after the halfway mark of the movie. And he’s sound asleep. Which brings up the question, what was Doug doing in Evie’s place anyway? I highly doubt that Doug is all moved in, that goes against his and Evie’s… mental agreement to take things slow. My educated assumption would be that Doug went to Evie’s starter castle so they could all go together to Jane’s birthday party, found them all suiting up to go to the isle and was asked to stay with Dizzy and the Smee twins. That would fit with Evie’s protective nature, which pushes her into asking her trusted and responsible boyfriend to take care of the VKs she’d be leaving behind.
So, poor Doug is sound asleep and there are two ways to wake him up. Either ending Audrey’s reign of terror or… a true love’s kiss. Before breaking down the scene, let’s take a minute to appreciate how it all comes back full circle to the two of them. Queen Grimhilde spelled Snow White and she had to be woken up by a true love’s kiss and now, Audrey spelled Doug and Evie has to wake him up with a true love’s kiss. Also, in true Descendants tradition, the gender role reversal is not lost on me. Another flip of the fairy tales, if you will.
I have noticed a few people going on about how Audrey is cursing everyone to sleep and, meanwhile, Evie is wasting time singing to a sleeping body. Well… She had time to kill.
Tumblr media
They had two hours to search Auradon Prep and head back to Evie’s place. Not sure how long it took for Evie and Mal to search the school while Uma was going through Audrey’s Diary, but I am assuming not too long? I mean, chronologically, Evie was serenading cursed-Doug before (or during) the guys actually encountering Ben. So yeah, she had time.
Now onto the actual scene:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For starters, Evie loses her wits. For a minute, she loses her mature, smart personality and is reduced to the teenager she actually is. She is completely clueless, momentarily forgetting the fact that a sleeping spell has been cast all over Auradon and attempts to shake him awake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It takes Uma’s snark pointing out that he’s spelled to bring her back to reality, and Mal has to defend Evie, letting Uma know she’s emotionally involved, and that her sense of judgement is currently kind of compromised. Now, considering how many times Evie was in situations where she showed brilliant emotional intelligence, it goes to show how deep her feelings are for Doug. During family day, during the coronation, leading the crew into the isle pre-running into Mal, when Ben was king-napped, the confrontation at Uma’s ship, cotillion, old hag Mal, the bikes being taken and when the suites of armors ganged up on the VKs, Evie never lost her cool. But when it came to him, she just lost it.
Uma says that Evie should be able to wake him up and you could see Evie slowly registering what she means. Her worry about her boyfriend’s current situation is even more accentuated with the worry that she now has to test their love. She has to face the one thing she has been actively dodging for months. Her reaction has Uma spelling out what Evie has to do for her, true love’s kiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that’s when Evie admits that she and Doug have yet to say their “I love you”s, sending Uma rolling her eyes. And Mal in the back smirks and raises an eyebrow slightly at Uma’s back as if to say “welcome to my world”, a hint that this is not the first time Mal has been involved in a conversation with Evie about her feelings for Doug and her postponing the inevitable. Which is something Mal did before for he own set of reasons and regretted, she didn’t want Evie to make the same mistake. She almost lost Ben then, she didn’t want that for Evie. That explains her later frustration throughout the music number.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mal almost looks smug, like yeah, Evie will have to do it now!
Then the song… there’s no doubt that almost every lyric is perfect for the couple, their relationship dynamic and their personalities as well. It goes back and forth between Evie reassuring herself and her going on about how good Doug is for her. And Mal’s and Uma’s reactions to Evie unfolding is indeed one of the best things that has happened in this movie. Actually, in all three movies.
Don't freak out, it's okay 'Cause true love can save the day And I think we feel the same But I don't know
Evie starts off by trying to reassure herself that she will be able to wake him up with a true love’s kiss, knowing that deep down, below all the uncertainties she’s feeling because of their history, she knows she loves Doug and that he loves her back. Unfortunately, her nervousness gets the best of her and she reluctantly starts stalling. However, her stalling technique is actually helping because she basically lives through their entire relationship, trying to prove to herself that Doug really does love her as well. And her nervousness is 100% valid because Doug isn’t Evie’s family like Mal, Carlos and Jay are, he isn’t a member of her inner circle, he can choose to leave at any point. It’s not the same as when Evie told Mal that she loves her or her constantly dotting over Carlos’s wellbeing. This is different for Evie.
When we met, it was sweet He was oh-so into me Seems like things are meant to be But I don't know
Like I said, Evie is reliving her relationship, especially the parts that had her falling for him, slowly but surely, starting with their first meeting. Doug was awe-struck by her beauty that he was left speechless for a second before gathering his wits to nervously stutter through the classes the VKs were signed into before their arrival. Again, the role reversal is evident. Doug started out as the nervous one and Evie has always oozed confidence, she’s not the kind to lose her cool but now things are different and she’s the one freaking out. Again, she tries to reassure herself that they are meant to be.
Tumblr media
Mal’s and Uma’s reactions to this verse are very appropriate. Mal approaches first, her eagerness to see Evie finally admit what they both knew all along evident all over her face. She’s excited for her best friend, who is finally admitting her feelings, and perhaps finally fully recovering from what the Evil Queen used to drill into her head. All the talk about having to marry a prince, about Snow White and the Dwarves being enemies, about having to be a royal and having a castle, about how she looks and how she could always be better. Mal sees Evie’s love declaration for Doug as her recovery journey ending.
Uma is whole different story, approaching a second late but faster. Uma is intrigued and her interest is peaking. That’s simply because this is the first time Uma sees anyone so in love and gushing over their significant other. During D2, Mal’s true love speech had more to do with her insecurities and fear regarding Ben and the pressures of being the King’s girlfriend… Auradon-washing (is that making any sense?) her, acknowledging that Ben knows her and loves her for who she is. But there’s Evie singing about how Doug is good for her and she barely questions her love for him during the song. Considering that dating on the isle is unheard of, let alone people being in love. She’s curious to hear the story behind Evie’s change to who she is, a person she envied for being selected for the Auradon program instead of her. Perhaps she is even thinking of the possibilities and opportunities Auradon will open to her and the other VKs once they’re freed. Hope of being safe enough to be in love like Evie is, of being self-made like Evie, of owning a home like Evie’s and being loved like Evie is.
I might even go as far as say, she prefers having Evie’s worries about being loved and in love to her own worries about surviving the day.
Does he love me? Or does he love me not? Do I love him? And is it strong enough?
It’s worth nothing that Evie questions Doug’s feelings for her countless times throughout the song. But she only questions her own twice, this being the first one. The other is also in the pre-chorus. And it’s not about her love for him as much as it is about the strength of that love.
One kiss, one kiss It all comes down to this One kiss, one kiss Ohh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Focusing once again on Mal and Uma, Mal is evidently more invested in the whole deal while Uma is starting to lose interest. That is still true to who they are, because Mal has experienced this situation before while Uma has not. Mal wants Evie to have her own proof that she’s loved and that she’s worthy, like she had with Ben in D2. And while Uma wants to feel what Evie is feeling, she’s not as emotionally forward as Evie is. She doesn’t like to be seen as sensitive, or compassionate, or vulnerable or in love.
One kiss, one kiss This moment could be it I, I, I wanna know So here I go
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, Mal’s too eager and she can’t really hide it when Evie tries to gather courage to attempt to kiss Doug the first time. And Uma’s interest is renewed again, her face lighting up like a kid swimming in gifts on Christmas.
As Evie avoids facing her demons the first time, Mal is frustrated while Uma is downright disbelieving. Again, playing well into their characters. Mal being Evie’s ear to vent to is frustrated that Evie deflects the opportunity to finally make sure of her feelings for Doug and his for her. While Uma, a very confrontational person by nature, is confused over Evie stalling. She wants to get this over with, like she always does.
Keep it cool, keep it calm Think he's loved me all along But maybe I got it wrong So I don't know
Again, Evie is reassuring herself that Doug has loved her from the start. But again, true to her character’s conflict with the idea of love, she keeps doubting her own words.
Then in the next lines she goes on how supportive he has been to her since they met. Her doubts shine through in this verse when she makes it known that it’s all about how she doesn’t think she deserves him.
He's so good, got my back But maybe I'm just too bad Could we be a perfect match? Now, I don't know
Tumblr media
Mal’s and Uma’s reactions to this part is one of my favorites. Mal is ecstatic that Evie found someone who loves her so much and has her back so blindly. Uma’s reaction is more controlled and more subtle, it is recognition. She sees it now, why Evie loves Doug, how Doug shows he’s in love with Evie, Evie’s own insecurities and why Mal supports the couple whole heartedly. She’s starting to get it. Maybe even support it.
Does he love me? Or does he love me not? Do I love him? And is it strong enough?
The second time Evie questions Doug’s love for her. And that’s it.
One kiss, one kiss It all comes down to this One kiss, one kiss Ohh One kiss, one kiss This moment could be it I, I, I wanna know So here I go
Yeah, here I go
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finally, Mal and Uma are about done. They frustratingly encourage Evie to go for it already, neither of them is exactly known for patience. They are so impatient that Evie is still taking her sweet sweet time and leave. I’ll also go as far as say that Mal and Uma bonded over Evie’s love trouble more than they have bonded in the entire movie so far.
Tumblr media
I feel my heartbeat beating saying, "It's gonna work" But if I'm dream-dream-dreaming, this is gonna hurt Either I will or I won't What if I do and he don't? Is he my Romeo? Oh, there's only one, one way to really know
Up until the line about Doug being Evie’s Romeo, we were good. More than good, actually. Evie is hyping herself up, following her gut feeling while still acknowledging that this would hurt like hell if it doesn’t work out. Which is another sign she’s sure of her own feelings and questioning Doug’s, playing well into her character flaws and self-consciousness.
But that Romeo line…
Here’s the thing, I am legit torn when it comes to that line. The only reason they could have used Romeo as an example, would be the family feud. You know, Montague vs. Capulet and Evil Queen vs. Snow White and the dwarves. Other than this little call-back, this line makes zero sense, the parallels stop there.
Let’s clear this up, if you ever hear Romeo and Juliet mentioned in a positive, happy light, know that whoever wrote the song, script or whatever it is, is not… fully aware… of the story. Romeo and Juliet were not a love story, it was never meant to be. Their love at first sight wasn’t even love, it was lust. They were both seeking escapism, Romeo was trying to get over a woman (Rosaline) who didn’t love him back, and Juliet, who is 14, was trying to avoid marrying this guy (Paris) who her parents where preparing her for, pretty much. To say that they fell in love at the first sight is not right, it was lusting after each other at best.
And that’s not even considering the tragic ending of the story. So, Romeo and Juliet were a tragedy start to end.
Again, I get why the line was used, but I would have done without it.
Moving on from the number, Evie finally kisses the guy and gets it over with. She is just so soft and tender with him, caressing his face then letting her hand sneak down to his chest. Can I be him for minute?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Doug snores, Evie FREAKS. Just look at her face. For a second there, her only constant outside of her family is not a constant anymore. The one stable thing she had is not as stable as she originally though. When that turns out to be Doug being a little shit, her initial reaction is to smack him and be mad about it. But her pout slowly relaxes into a relieved, small smile and it is everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cruel cruel prank from Doug, but again, he’s a joker. It’s one of the few things the movies actually told about his character, so that’s fine. If Evie can forgive him then so can I. I would have strangled him for a bit first, though.
And I assume Evie and Doug talk about the whole true love thing somewhere off screen, since they spend together the time it takes for Uma to eat cake twice (once with Dizzy and once with Mal when they sort of make up) and the guys to find Ben, de-beast him and bring him back. So yeah, probably they talk things through like the mature couple they have proved to be, maybe sharing a few kisses and so. Oh, and catching up, Evie absolutely fills him in on everything that has been going on the past few hours.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Audrey traps everybody inside, breaking their couple time and bringing them back to reality. When Uma helps Mal and they’re freed, Evie looks off screen towards Doug, gives him a big smile and a nod. Like, See? I did that! I got them working together! See my handy work and be proud!
Tumblr media
Of course, whether Evie is the reason for them getting over their conflict or not is irrelevant. She tried. But the point is, she looks at him, showing him the result of what she has been working towards.
Again, one thing I have noticed was that, other than the fact that Doug is talking to Gil when Ben interrupts to send Doug, Jane and Gil to find Fairy God Mother, Uma and Evie wave Doug goodbye. You can clearly see Gil looking the other way a few beats before Uma and Evie raise their hands in sync. It wasn’t for Gil, oh no, it wasn’t for Gil.
Tumblr media
So, Uma likes Doug, you can’t change my mind. And I don’t know about you, but Queen Uma’s opinions are clearly superior and to be trusted. I could end this here and be done with it and I’ll be satisfied.
But there’s more.
Engagement Party time!!
To kick things off, Doug is hanging out with Evie and Jay, you know, as he is part of the group. For some reason, even Jane and Carlos aren’t together and Chad looking around aimlessly and not being a part of anything is definitely me at a party. Chad in general is a mood on his own.
Tumblr media
During Mal’s speech, when she makes it known that Hades is her father, everyone looks around in confusion. Except Evie, Carlos, Doug and Jay. Jay moves slightly but I think it’s more of the shock about Mal going public than the information itself. Everybody else looks confused, even Jane and Audrey.
Tumblr media
Knowing that Jane, Chad and Doug were absent when Mal told about Hades the first time, when Audrey was comatose, and assuming that Audrey didn’t catch onto why Hades was there to help wake her up, it’s expected that all four of them would be clueless at this point.
But Doug isn’t. He knows. Evie definitely either let it slip sometime before and made him promise not to tell anyone or she told him sometime between their true love kiss and the party. Since Evie is a secret keeper herself, I’d assume that this piece of information was given to Doug as part of the run down after the kiss or after Audrey was rescued.
So yeah, Evie trusts him as blindly as he trusts her.
Anyway, Mal goes blah blah blah barrier down blah blah blah they sing the final number and Harry pulls the sleazy move of all sleazy moves. He literally hits on four different people in, like, one minute. He asks if Mal is taken, attempts to give Evie the eyes, tries to kiss Uma then lets himself be pulled away by Audrey.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Harry asks if Mal’s is taken and Doug’s dancing ceases and he steps forward. I don’t think Doug thought that Harry would move onto Evie next, he barely knows him, and he hasn’t seen Harry making a move on anyone before. Doug definitely steps forward to interfere and stop Harry’s advances on his best friend’s fiancé. However, Evie shots Harry down so Harry tries to make eyes at her but Doug shots him down instantly.
Harry legit looks at Doug sort of in deflated disappointment and is elbowed by Uma for two reasons, one being the fact that Uma has witnessed Evie waking Doug up with a true love’s kiss and two, Uma’s own feelings for Harry. Obviously. She acknowledges that she had shot him down before but now everything is different, it is safe now for her to let herself be in love.
So yeah, Evie laugh, grabs Doug and leaves after the grumpy and pouty Uma.
Also, the following gif means that Doug is to Evie what Harry is to Uma. I’ll just leave it at that.
Tumblr media
And that concludes all the Evie/Doug story in the three movies. I guess it kind of proves my point that you have to read between the lines and look hard in every shot to gather what is going on with every character and pairing. To be honest, I get why some people might say that Evie deserves better than Doug because he’s not good looking enough or not interesting enough or whatever. Again, Doug was never meant to be viewed as good looking or classically handsome from the start. He is the son of a sidekick after all. And him not being interesting enough, it’s just the movie prioritizing the moving the story forward over developing already existing characters. Making him anything but what he was in the final cuts of the movies undoes all the character development Evie had, which is garbage.
I guess my point is, it is not about deserving. It’s never about deserving when it comes to love. It’s about loving your partner unconditionally, helping them rid of their flaws, treating them the best way you can, being their support system and believer. That is why Evie and Doug are one of the best-developed couples.
A few things I felt like going over:
1- The movies have severely underused all the characters, we can all agree on that, but none more than Doug. The AKs especially, after the first movie they were all but accessories, not even amounting to supporting characters. Lonnie was actually the only one who got no good story arc in the first movie, which is why she had her own in the second and that’s that.
2- “Doug has no contribution in D3″ Well... I am not entirely sure how to break this to you, but none of the AKs did. Chad did absolutely nothing as Audrey’s sidekick except be a comic relief.
Tumblr media
Jane’s contribution was turning Beast-Ben into semiBeast-Ben. Which could have been achieved through ending Audrey’s reign of terror, or the guys holding down Ben while Mal true-love’s-kisses the spell out of him. So... Jane’s contribution, while is smart, is pointless. And when she is sent to find her mother, she does find her on the steps to the museum that holds her wand. And Jane doesn’t even think about carrying on the plan her mother obviously had in mind.
Tumblr media
And this is Ben’s contribution. He took them to the Audrey’s lair, which she had already abandoned at this point. So Ben’s story in D3 is proposal, Beastie Boi, beard-and-fanged-up, Uber driver, Stone Boi, nervous pacing and finally, engagement party. With a side of being surprised all the time.
3- Doug receives so much hate with absolutely no good reason. I have already gone over the character, but let’s stop a second at his looks and wardrobe. And like, I didn’t want to go there, but I kind of have to, it wasn’t just about the hair. Some people are ripping him apart, completely ghosting over the fact that Zachary Gibson is a real human being, who has been struggling with his mental health and is finally getting better and feeling comfortable in his own skin. So, just relax. I am not trying to call out anyone or even shit on any ships, they can all coexist, it is what fanfiction if for. But ripping into the guy like that is unacceptable.
Tumblr media
4- I have seen people going on about Doug’s wardrobe and how it is boring, but have you seen the movie? Because Doug’s outfit is on level compared to the AKs’ guys outfits to Jane’s birthday, and none of the AKs’ outfits come even close to what the VKs are rocking. Here’s what everyone are wearing to Jane’s birthday for reference:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then here’s Doug’s:
Tumblr media
He’s literally wearing the same exact outfit as Chad but with his own colors, both are average and boring compared to the girls’ dresses or the VKs’ outfits. Can’t we agree that Chad and Doug were cheated and move on?
Rant done, I promise.
I’d normally see you off with gifs of Evie and Doug, but I also thought I’d include gifs and images of Doug interacting with everyone. Because he’s one of the few characters that actually does interact with almost every important character on screen.
And with these, I rest my many cases:

As for his interactions with the rest of the core4 and the AKs:
