i hope this doesn't sound like a silly or weird thing to send you, but i'm autistic and have long thought of nico and a handful of other riordanverse characters as autistic and i love your posts about why nico in particular seems intentionally autistic-coded. but i've been thinking, if rick did intend for any of his characters to be autistic, why wouldn't he say so outside of the text at least? i can't think of a good reason why not, when he goes out of his way to be explicit about so many other characters' various marginalized identities and has confirmed things like reyna being asexual outside of the original text. so it gives me this nagging sort of doubt that maybe rick just made nico come off as so extremely autistic coded by accident, somehow. if it wasn't an accident i do kind of wish he'd say so because there's next to zero explicitly stated autistic representation in, like, any media so it'd be nice to have here even if not strictly necessary. either way though, like i said, i love your posts and i agree with you 100% about autistic nico! some others i like to think are autistic are annabeth and leo.

(Most of this is gonna be kind of a tangential ramble to your point and i apologize in advance just bear with me)

This actually touches upon something I've been meaning to do a write-up on recently, which is: depending on the coding, that is our explicit statement. In most coding, actually, that's kind of the point. (Also something something Death of the Author.)

You may have noticed a recent trend across media of characters saying things directly rather than expressing them in a natural way, and often this includes incredibly stilted dialogue of characters explaining things in very politically correct, wikipedia-esque descriptions and terminology that make absolutely no sense for the characters' personalities or mannerisms. This is born out of the idea that if something is not stated in explicit terms, no amount of evidence below an outright direct exact statement will ever count - if two characters of the same gender have an explicit kiss and wedding on-screen, it doesn't matter because they never said the word "gay," etc etc.

In PJO, prior to more recent books, we get plenty of examples of characters explaining parts of their identities without direct statements. Percy never needs to say in outright terms that he has PTSD from Gabe - and it doesn't make sense that he would! He's 12! He's never been diagnosed for that. He probably doesn't even know what PTSD is really. But we, the audience, know without a doubt he has PTSD, because it is clearly expressed to us. That is coding. Tyson is coded as having down syndrome. Nico is coded as being autistic. It doesn't make sense for Nico to turn to the camera and explain that he's autistic and what that means, because he definitely never got diagnosed for it and probably doesn't know what that means cause the diagnosis literally did not exist when he was growing up - and heck, autism terminology was still kind of getting sorted out back in 2007 when TTC was published, so it's unlikely we could have feasibly gotten any exact terminology wink-wink-nudge-nudges short of something like how Percy outright mentions other students called Tyson the r-slur in Sea of Monsters. And in fact we see that same exact style of coding with Nico later on in the series. Nico never turns to the camera and says word-for-word "I am gay, I am mlm, here's me wearing my exact pride flags" (until TOA/TSATS, which... did the exact thing i mentioned about characters speaking like theyre trying to get a good grade in therapy, or giving a powerpoint presentation). But it is never unclear that HoO is telling us outright that Nico is gay. It's not just hinted at. It's there, in your face. But entirely because no one ever outright says "gay" specifically it's technically still only coding. We know he's gay, we know the characters have trauma/ptsd, etc etc. We don't need it spelled out - that's just kind of condescending. It's like if you said describing a character with "eyes like moss" means they were "green-eye coded."

Nico being autistic-coded isn't hidden. It's not a secret. It's very overt. If you know what autism looks like, well, yeah, there he is. Even if you only know very vague 2007 media presentation of autism, Nico in TTC is easily recognizable enough as autistic because that's the point. Tyson is easily recognizable as being coded as having down syndrome and it's very clearly very intentional! It's just never spoon-fed in exact terms to the reader because it's not necessary! You've already been told the information necessary to tell you what is up with this character, so just plainly going "oh they're [x] in exact terms" is very much telling-not-showing and feels redundant. And while there are places for that kind of thing, most of the time it's very unnecessary. Sometimes coding is subtle, sometimes it's obvious, and yeah there are times where writers code characters unintentionally, but the textual evidence is there, and that's the whole point.

And that's what Death of the Author is about - it doesn't matter what the author intended at the end of the day, because if it's in the text it's in the text. You can look at author intent to try and figure out what that text means, but the text is the text. A Separate Peace is a very classic example - author John Knowles denies there being homosexual subtext, and meanwhile one of the protagonists living in 1942 puts on a pink shirt while saying he doesn't mind of people think of him as gay. What the author says after the fact doesn't matter - if it's there, it's there. So Rick saying anything outside of the books is completely irrelevant. And Rick talks about this a lot - he actively tells people that his statements outside of the books are just his own thoughts, but what's in the books is what's in the books, and if the text supports it then that's all the evidence you need.

Nico specifically is a case where yeah, he's clearly autistic-coded. It's very obvious and very obviously intentional when he's younger, and as the books progress it remains a background trait of his but is still notable (except for when it gets forgotten in TOA/TSATS like everything else, including the adhd/dyslexia, but i digress). It's a clear pattern within the first few books that Rick is intentionally including. It doesn't make sense, especially for the year the book was published, for the reader to be directly told in explicit terminology that Nico is autistic, because the reader is already being told that Nico is autistic.

And yeah, Rick doesn't mention Nico being autistic-coded outside of the text, but he also doesn't mention Tyson being coded as having down syndrome. He also said one time that Percy doesn't have PTSD at all, which is very incorrect starting from book 1. Again, Death of the Author. Whatever Rick says outside of the books does not matter, because he already said it in the books. And there's plenty of other stuff in the books that Rick doesn't touch upon, particularly relating to character identity - did you know Leo is Native? Sammy mentions that the Valdez family is Native in Son of Neptune but we don't get any specifics and then it's like never brought up again anywhere. That happens all the time in the series - and outside of the series - Rick can't possibly address every single point to confirm/deny everything from the books. That's what analysis is for! And that's why my blog exists 👍

DevLog 2 - The Devining

well. it only took 3 months. but here is our new devlog! or however you call it... We did write a whole devlog for early march, but with school and work taking up most of our schedule, we did not post it, and most of our progress fell to the sands of time.

Yeah I didn't do nearly as much as freep, so most of those changes will be down there. part of the reason though is that ive been doing a lot of work on my music (haha yes self promo) so if you want to check that out it'd be great! (most of yall are just from my acc so you probably alr know) (my current style of music is probably not representative of O2's audio style or vibe, still working towards that)

The main thing I did was improve trenchbroom (level editor)/qodot/godot interop, which can bring us closer to building some levels (and who knows, a little alpha test in the future ;)). It was actually realllyyyy annoying due to a lack of documentation for qodot 4 (and also ill admit it, a bit of my stupidity) so there was a bug that I couldn't fix for a long time but eventually it was fixed and now it works great!

I also started looking more into the art style of the game, and I'm even learning a bit of how to draw (thanks to my friends! I wouldn't be able to learn like at all without them lol).

Back in march, i spent a lot of time working on the AI, getting it to move… and run away, sort of. But more of that will come later. 

Lots of these last week or so has been on the character controller, and reinventing the wheel to introduce a state machine and get a lot cleaner code so its easier to revisit if we ever had to.

Im proud of the work that we've done so far, as we come close to a prototype with *Gameplay* 

New Things

Changed the look of the enemy slightly to remove the “amongus factor”

Rewrote the entire script for nav pathing

New enemy prototype can now feel pain / has a health pool that can be depleted using bullets from the player

Added a new line of sight for the enemy to check whether or not the player is in the area to follow

Added the ability for the enemy to hide - WIP - enemy can hide but isnt very good at it. Kinda like a child who turns away while hiding in the corner. 

Enemy can also detect when youre in a certain range, I will be adding more flags later on for detection (when the player shoots, sneezes, or explodes on accident)

New areas for target practice, line of sight testing, following and hiding

I remember this sort of animosity slash criticism which floated around 2019-2022 with some prominence before that, not sure if it's still around, which was that R/WBY is vindictively cruel about subverting your expectations. Suffice it to say I didn't agree with it then and I don't now. I remember I got shouted down by a - generously - overexcited I/ronwood fan on here because I said there were bad portents about him at the beginning of V7. I was also a moron growing into myself back then, so that's saying something.

Actually, I remember watching V2 when I was but an adolescent and I got immediate death flags for Pyrrha, and you've got to remember that much of V1 was spent either getting mad at Jaune for the Jaunedice arc or speculating on Cinder killing Jaune. Fandom was so different then. Also I think this was right around the period a lot of us thought Ozpin asspoded the moon, turned out it was sort of his estranged wife's fault of course.

It's getting away from me. What's my evidence for it not being vindictively cruel? Yeah, I think Penny being framed like everything that was good in the world in the V7 opening led some people astray; they also really didn't want to hear anybody to suggest the opposite, or that that opening was for emotional effect later. People walk into this stuff wilfully. I think R/WBY is very straightforward in its storytelling, and I admire it for its competency, because that is increasingly rare. Where I get annoyed is that they think needing to be any more straightforward than they are already will somehow make people listen. Probably my biggest gripe with V9, especially after V8's pseudocriticism.

In all honesty, I don't think most of these people care about writing anyway. I'm not saying this as a V1 fan who got attached to the show because of RVB - I know most people were attracted because of the trailers and the fights, nobody really cared about the story - I think this is probably just true of most general audiences now. From a brand perspective I would not sacrifice the writing for people who don't care about writing; I would just be making sure the setpieces are in place to draw attention, whether that is the requisite fight (interesting writing will carry you there) or relationship development (requisite writing will carry you there; frankly I'm surprised there haven't been more friendship antics - that being said I will eat Summer and Raven's interactions for breakfast, lunch, and dinner). But where I think they err is shitstirring with the shipbaiting; yeah, third place criticism was the Blake/Sun bullshit in V4-5. That was mean because it played with anime romance tropes, and I think it was mean, too, because Blake/Yang shippers who were attuned to the deeper R/WBY going-ons were pretty much left out cold for hijinks. Also, Ilia's more interesting than Sun, stop wasting my time.

My broader point actually though is that yeah, I can point to I/ronwood and say it was flagged very early on, as early as V2 - people just thought Qrow was being a whiny little bitch betraying the bro code for daring to criticise ultra mega military guy, but I guess it's like emasculation anxiety or something - and I can say it from both a writing perspective as well as decisions in the framing and the tools you're afforded with animation; I couldn't really tell you how my gut thinks, but my gut knows stuff. At a certain point with storytelling you just know. That a lot of people are missing this I think in part says something about where people's sense of narrative comes from (you develop it by reading/watching), not just a vague 'state of media literacy'. It's not lost on me that I have interacted with a lot of people who don't understand how character writing is supposed to work when character writing is basically considered secondary to plot and sword fight look cool in the shows that they watch.

It does amuse me that such competent and straightforward writing escapes a fairly loud minority, though. No need to advertise it.

The admin Thell/Thelle doesn't plan to develop Waterfall.Social anymore. He said he plans to keep it on while he creates something else but its not worth the time. Trust Me. (And waterfall apparently is down half the time nowadays)

People paid for this website on gofund me or whatever patreon website so you'd expect a bit of professionalism but Thell is not and he's ready to blame the users on his own shortcomings.

The ToS at the beginning had some bull like "no need to tire you with legalese" (paraphrasing it here) at the beginning of it. which Obviously had to be changed later. But it was a red flag i suppose.

Back when i joined waterfall years ago it to had some nice ideas, but longterm it fell Apart due to Thell being a mess of a single admin.

Thell created us an art marketplace on the website and then took it down few months later bc it wasn't profitable and people wouldn't abide the rules.

Which, in all fairness, the website was small, and he'd refuse to hire more staff idk. hard to see it profitable if it's tiny

Except i only found some roleplaying cherp drama on tumblr dunking on Thell i guess, bc offtopic, but apparently he was an admin on it and they accussed him of pretending to be 2 people in the same time, god complex, narcissism, bad coding and telling one of the Discord members to kill themself.

At the beginning i also remember being able to look at notification board.

And later it disappeared for some reason.

And honestly the red signs were already there even before Waterfall. People can change. But it seems Thell didn't change that much for the better beyond changing bunch of views.

If Thell creates another website ever again i Hope Tumblr will crush it to pulp.

If you'd like something that's more stable i can recommend Pillowfort and send you an invite code if you'd like. They also allow nsfw.

I heard there was some drama with it and staff aswell though i have no details about it, and i bet it wasn't as ridiculous as waterfall. I know they were fakely accussed on allowing cp tho. Even despite their website being one of the most anti-cp (even fictional is a No) i've seen. Heard they are too jumpy with implementing this ban, which is not good if you get fakely accussed, but well, maybe it changes. You don't have to pay for it to necessarily use it so at worst its just waste of time. o/ Pillowfort grows and seems to get regularly updated and it has a team behind it.

If you are an artist or an art enjoyer, Artfol is a cool new app for that. You can view it also from desktop. They are currently developing the option to post artworks from website. A very organised small team.

I absolutely loved the sorting chats thing but I was wondering if you have any other questions for figuring out your primary house? I took the test and I got the hatstall thing twice so I basically had to give my own imput on what house I think I am, but I can't figure out if I'm a Slythering primary who models Ravenclaw or the other way around and the questions on the quiz were too abstract to be helpful

Both the questions and the official descriptions, while helpful, are indeed vague. It always helps me to ‘see’ a House (or anything else) in ‘action’ in an actual person or a fictional character, in order for me to wrap my head around what someone of that House ‘looks like.’ They had a great many examples on their tumblr page until it was accidentally deleted / purged which helped me -- you kind of need to think about what each House values and represents, and then see them in a character that manifests those traits. Which is what I try to do when I write up my ‘Sorting’ posts (on my blog, previously linked) -- show how this character differs and how they might disagree with someone from another House, because of their primary focus.

But all of that is rather abstract too, isn’t it? ;)

Bottom line. Are you a Katniss Everdeen or a Luke Skywalker?

When you consider Slytherin, think about Katniss. What is her #1 priority in life? Her sister, Prim. She volunteers as Tribute so her sister does not have to go into the arena. She is willing to run off with Prim and Gale (another “chosen” family member) into the woods, and let the rest of society fend for itself, because at least her prioritized people, those to whom she is most loyal, would be safe. Katniss cares nothing for most of the other Tributes, but she adopts Rue in the arena, because Rue reminds her of Prim. She hunts for Prim. She tolerates the big orange cat that she hates for Prim. She does everything... for Prim, and later, for Peeta, once she has invited him into her small circle of ‘caring.’

For Slytherins, it’s MY people. MY family. MY city. MY country. It’s possessive, and personal, and it would gut them not to feel a sense of responsibility to prioritize THEIR people. If they were on their way to help a friend or a sibling and they ignored someone stuck in the ditch that tried to flag them down, there would be no guilt, because My People Come First. Always. That’s how they are wired. If this is only a ‘Model,’ it will be dropped like a hot potato the minute things get rough, and the person will feel no guilt. But the Slytherin would feel enormous guilt at not putting their people FIRST.

The Ravenclaw is not a loyalist house, but an idealist house. The Jedi Code is a perfect example of a Ravenclaw system -- it asks the Jedi to abandon their own instinctual feelings and gut impulses and live according to a set of high idealistic rules. Their expectations are lofty and their chosen system is something they live by, because they have created or adopted it to take the place of emotionalism. The Ravenclaw might craft ‘it is good to defend and prioritize one’s family’ into their system, but it would come from a place of intellect more than emotion. Luke Skywalker is a good example of this -- of a man who chooses to live by the Code of the Jedi, but who also crafts and shapes it more to his own form. Luke, being a compassionate individual, adds such things as love and mercy to his own version of the Code. And he lives that out. Kylo Ren is also another Ravenclaw, who is rejecting his own emotions in an attempt to live up to an ideal -- for much of the first two movies, a bad ideal, but a system he believes in (the Dark Side of the Force, and a renouncement of his feelings) and tries to enforce on other people through persuading them to join him (Rey).

Fortunately, being a Ravenclaw also means that when he sees another, better way to be (again, through Rey’s influence and her healing him)... he can discard the old system without a second thought, without guilt, and adopt an entirely new one. That is the skill and talent of the Ravenclaw. To forever be tinkering with what they hold to be true, and what they live by. If they find out their system is flat out wrong, irrational, corrupt, or immoral, most Ravenclaws will abandon it. Like Kylo Ren, they will toss the broken lightsaber into the sea and go build a new one. (The lightsaber being their “I live by these principles.”) These ideals come from the outside and their own tinkering, but they aren’t instinctively felt. Unlike the Slytherin, they do not go by emotions -- they go by what they have chosen to be.

As previously mentioned, I know a Slytherin. She always had a deep abiding affection for Katniss, because she understood her completely. When The Hunger Games first came out, and I was struggling to understand why she liked it so much (I found it incredibly depressing and morbid), she just said, “I would do that for my sister.” Years later, when she was taking the Sorting Hat test, I knew she would come out a Slytherin, because... she is Katniss. But the difference between us was distinctive. She would rush to defend, to protect, to be loyal to, and I would sit back and analyze the situation from a detached viewpoint, ignoring any emotions I might be having in the process... because I am constantly weighing everything against my logical reasoning and my faith. It’s as simple as that. Of course my family comes first, but my faith also says to treat everyone with kindness and “do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” So there is always a push-pull in me between instinct (my family, not MY family) and everyone else, according to my belief system.

Consequently, if you want an idea of what a Hufflepuff looks like, look no further than Rey Skywalker. She may be a little grouchy and standoffish, but she also stands up for and defends... everyone. She has a collective emotional loyalty to the entire human race. She protects BB8. She protects Finn. She attaches herself easily to Han Solo, then to the mission to find Luke, then to the Rebellion, and finally, she even sees the potential for good and healing in Kylo Ren. Everyone is fair in her mind, everyone is equal, it would never occur to her to prioritize a select few over the greater good. Hufflepuff values.

And Leia, of course, is a Gryffindor. Someone who has found her Cause and intends to champion it, and you can come along for the ride or get the hell out of her way. She and Han, a Slytherin, butt heads a lot, because he has no interest in a Cause, until he attaches himself to her. Then her Cause becomes his Cause, in a truly Slytherin fashion -- what matters to My People, matters to me. She trusts her gut and does whatever it tells her to do, and entertains no turning aside for anyone. She will stand alone if she must.

You need to ask yourself, who am I? What do I trust? And what would gut me to ignore? My loved ones? Slytherin. My system and logic? Ravenclaw. My general concern for humanity? Hufflepuff. My gut instincts? Gryffindor. What are you willing to do in your life? Sacrifice other things to maintain and cultivate your intimate relationships? Slytherin. Abandon belief systems that you know to be erroneous without a second thought? Ravenclaw. Defend everyone who cannot defend themselves? Hufflepuff. Walk away from your entire family and friendship group on a matter of principle? Gryffindor. Who, by the way, do you ‘understand’ on a completely instinctual level? My Slytherin friend understood Katniss. My Hufflepuff friend understands Hufflepuffs. I understand Ravenclaws like Kylo Ren, because I get his struggle. It’s familiar to me. And my Gryffindor father understands Gryffindors and in true Gryffindor fashion, thinks cowardice is unforgivable.

And extra extra heavy COVID19 instead of 3 feet you'll get it at 10 feet bad enough to kill you nearly instantly.

This is that old fashioned detective work like sitting at a gas meter while some one is down trying to find out how to save people (aliens included) from dying in a gas chamber and they're up there making sure that gas isn't turned on to kill the girl doing all the work -- he couldn't hear people downstairs through the street and i could get the truth out easier and faster before they even knew and I was always happy to get the news while he was just mad and angry. But Charles was starting to get nightmares after my list and had came up with 14 more companies from coming from the same way i had came up with my list... So he talked to some the other people that felt creeped out about the assignment I insisted on doing and they also all added each two and then some kept a private list... Which they slowly added after verifying the company was then clean.. It started in 2013 these bad dreams.

So every time it happened or they started their nightmares they added to the list.

Overall 642 companies we dreamed of or felt or somehow had a psychic connection to. I dreamed of kids and old people and women. Some people only dreamed about men. Some just kids.

The companies we have left is 642 to check out as they hadn't had yet done any bad and no dreams or any thing has came up since...

Which isn't happy, we now know, but good news is whatever bad has happened we can fix is super special and magical ways.

So we have Thorn, CIA, Military, some FBI and some others to check what's been going on and see.

So that's about 8 Trillion that have been affected. But at least 6 Trillion have already been retrieved.

So this one single person has done the miraculous. The biggest miracle we have been waiting for on a personal level. For me its been 7 years but 6 since 9 other people started having their dreams affected and the lists began.

So 10 of us with nightmares. Night terrors. Waking up screaming or shaking or scared. And not knowing why but having a name, a company label. Sometimes or often a place on a map... As close to the actual GPS coordinates of longitude and latitude. Wake up listing numbers for no reason. Numbers that make no sense N 316941027865389421. Over and over.

And one person today made the phone call to make thst difference to about 200,000 kids and over 400,000 parents. And siblings and grandparents. Friends.

Just today he changed the world for at least a million whom now have a missing child come home.

Made one million hearts smile and backs release tension and sorrow.

And now we're looking at 2 trillion lost people. Who have kids. Who have parents. Grandparents. Friends.

Were gonna have at least 6 trillion hearts heal then there's soulmates so that's gonna be 12 trillion

Due to one phone call. That was all I needed.

I had heard him say he couldn't find his soulmate... And he didn't go trying to save her or find her today

He knew it was just kids.

But he knew it was missing kids because the people getting ID kits were told not to call the police only call the dog. He could see clearly kids were being abducted and they had a rating system on "easy to kidnap to hard" and the easy were always reported within weeks.

Last night I trusted mine and we pulled 13 million from slavery. That's 26 million directly affected with soulmate syndrome. Then parents that makes it times two. So 52 million then grandparents and kids...

Then one person trusted his. And kaboom an estimated 12 Trillion frowns are gonna turn upside down.

Then we are getting these bad guys off the streets, out of their homes, immediately. Hopefully they're checked thoroughly and then killed. I'm done with this baby sitting shit. I could tell the difference. Anyway if they're in Google you'll see they don't look human. They're pretty gross -- some do -- so ew be careful but from the plane height trust me they do not.

And its very careful with software to show no damage to trees or animals will occur.. And the software is very intelligent and cautious and only certain types of people can access it. Like a kidnapper can't turn on the computer and see where and how. But a Clark Kent or Louis Lane or someone can. But if an evil Donald Trump sits down next to, the software will shut down. I swear I'm not being rude this is just a serious question. So do we need to do history research on everything before we speak?I've said something along those lines to my drunk friends when they wanted to do something stupid I'm starting to get nervous about the words comming out of my mouth,my friends who have different types of disabilities actually laughed when I first said that. Again I'm not being a bastard,I just don't wanna piss people off.

There are some people that will be mad and judge you harshly for using harmful words unintentionally regardless of how obscure the reference. Like with the IQ test, I think it’s pretty obvious that it’s ableist but very few people also know it’s racist history. I didn’t know about it until a few years ago when I was looking up specifics on how IQ tests related to marginalized groups and there it was. Obviously not everyone is going to have this niche curiosity, other people usually think of things that are little more fun to do with their spare time.

It’s not fair to judge people on their problematic language until you know the circumstances. English isn’t everyone’s first language and if we can’t expect native speakers to get it right we shouldn’t expect anyone else to. Neurological divergence (mental illness) can also lead to misunderstandings, not always because of “learning disabilities” but because sometimes fundamental perceptions are not the same, there’s also the similar problem of people finding words problematic because they are ignorant of the actual etymology and end up targeting another marginalized group. I talk about disabled people getting slave wages in America and people have gotten mad that I was being racist toward African-Americans. Slavery and slave wages have always existed, it’s not something any one group can put a flag in. The Egyptians paid their slaves slave wages so it was even an issue back then, even though not too long ago we discovered that Egyptian slaves actually had some sort of union. They obviously not a good union.

It’s also not fair to hold marginalized people to such a high standard of dealing with a world that seems against them but never getting to be frustrated or lose their cool. Sometimes someone will blow up at you for something arguably trivial, a micro-aggression, but we need to cut them slack as well. For some marginalized people existing society is so hard that sometimes your heart feels like a mirror that gets smashed every time you go out in public and before you can go out again you need some time to piece it back together.

And for the most part everyone seems to be trying to do their best (or trying their best to attempt to try their best) but all of us are privy to different sorts of information and life experiences so not one of us can help but be ignorant and intentionally offensive. The best thing for all of us to do is remember this is impossible for everyone and cut each other some slack.

When you call someone out try to give them the benefit of the doubt unless you know otherwise. Be succinct; tell people why you think they may want to rephrase something. Every once in a while you’ll find someone who genuinely wants to learn about your culture and that makes the world feel a little less terrifying.

When someone calls you out, be understanding of where they are coming from. Understand that you don’t know where they are coming from. You can play the Oppression Olympics as much as you want and judge people for losing their temper when they might have lived an easier life than you but don’t be petty. Rest assured most everyone is suffering the maximum amount possible at any given time. If you get yelled at don’t judge an entire population based on that person, and also don’t turn your back on an entire population based on that person. It’s hard but we’ll have to make sure we don’t become so jaded that we don’t have a genuine interest in each other’s welfare.

When you are among friends it can be easier. Try to talk openly about the social and cultural differences between you and listen to everyone. Talk about how you can help each other.

Lately I’ve been having trouble using casual misogynistic language when I hadn’t intended to and I told my friends I’m working on my correcting it. So, if I talk about an altercation with someone and I call them a bitch my friends let me know right away and it doesn’t have to be shameful or detracting; someone just says “sexist” to remind me and I rephrase my sentence and we move on as if nothing happened. This really helps to eliminate problematic language.

In a perfect world we also want friends who understand that sometimes we are in an emotional place where we can’t articulate our feelings so we instinctively use crass language to emphasize our frustration. My friends and I have what we call the “safe space” for those times.

It started as a joke but at this point it’s become code for “I’m going to spill some tea and you probably want to hear it privately.” Originally it was a joke of “you are obviously really upset so say whatever you want and I won’t rat you out.”

It actually really works.  

Being able to pull the “I’m having a moment, don’t judge me” card takes the fear of fucking up off your shoulders. You know if you need to you can be upset and no one will judge you for problematic language and you know that if you are messing up someone will let you know in a casual way. You don’t constantly have to worry about what you’re saying.

And changing your vernacular like that won’t actually stick unless you learn to speak casually with it.

So maybe we should all just treat socially responsible English as a foreign language to native English speakers. None of us were born speaking it, using it came later in life and probably didn’t fit right away given the culture differences, no matter what intersectionality we are all in the same social language class and at different grades. Yelling at someone for mistakes is obviously ridiculous but humbling ourselves and studying together is what ensures we all pass.

Try not to get frustrated when you find yet another term you aren’t supposed to use. You came to class and you are participating, you can only learn what the materials you were given taught you, and bullies are always hiding their own insecurities.

If you watch you’ll notice that the people who most venomously call people out for their language often have problematic language that they refuse to admit. Usually it’s ableist language but you even have people arguing that they should be allowed to reappropriate another race’s speech and dress if they are both POC but a different race. Don’t be worried about pissing these people off, they are always pissed off.
