Aqua Teen Hunger Force #74: “Hoppy Bunny” | February 17, 2008 - 11:45PM | S06E05

Hey, some of these fucking episodes have DVD commentaries for them. I am mostly watching these on HBOMax for this blog, and I popped in the DVD to check to see if a moment in this episode was censored on both versions (it is). Imagine my surprise when I clicked the episode title and it asked if I wanted to watch it with commentary! When I was getting ready to cover this season, I checked the DVD to see if there were commentaries. Nothing on the packaging or the menus advertised that they did. Squidbillies volume two on DVD also suffers from this issue. Contemporary DVD reviews fail to mention the fact that select episodes have commentary tracks, probably because the person reviewing them opted to “Play All” and would not ever know the option was on the table.

I’ll start off this as a way to play catch-up: Reedickyoulus also has a commentary track. Dave Willis says that he got the idea for not featuring the Aqua Teens in the first few episodes by riffing during an interview that in the upcoming season the Aqua Teens move out because they realize the house was somehow causing all the strange things to happen, and that the show was just going to be about the empty house. So that’s what got them going down the path of the Marcula arc-ula.

The commentary for this episode features two writers, Thom Nicolette and Ted Murphy. They cop to the fact that they were the ones who wrote the scene where Shake microwaves cats in Reedickyoulus. It was in their first draft, and it was never changed. Dave Willis muses that he found other examples of on-cat violence in the show to go to far, but for some reason found the microwaved cats to be funny, so maybe his barometer is off for that kind of thing.

This episode is Hoppy Bunny, which is a reasonably funny but not terribly memorable episode. I’m saying that because I really didn’t remember this one much at all. In fact, most of the episodes from here on out are ones I saw once, MAYBE twice. I remembered the character of Hoppy Bunny, but that might be because I saw the screengrab from the episode that accompanies it on episode guide sites and on various streaming platforms. It’d be like if you remembered what Bugs Bunny looked like, but didn’t remember him clearly being Jewish.

The plot! Carl buys yet another sexually-charged product; this time it’s a pied-piper program that includes a recorder that can summon turned-on broads. When he finally gets it, wires begin making their way into Carl’s body, eventually turning him into an elfin flutist, playing for the benefit of Hoppy Bunny, a man in a round bunny costume. He’s voiced by Scott Adsit, and the episode makes sure you know that he’s just some dude. In fact he’s a surgeon.

A bunch of other furries show up. I don’t recall the episode calling them furries specifically. I was hyper aware of furries at the time because I was extremely online, and I wonder how much furrydom was in the zeitgeist in 2008. It was 5 years after CSI did an episode about them, which I remember a co-worker complaining about. He’s the only furry I specifically knew, and he balked at the inaccuracies of the episode. I pray CSI never comes for the middle-aged Adult Swim bloggers. It sorta seems like the episode was playing it safe by not using “furries” as shorthand, but if you know, you know.

The moment in question that I was wondering if it was censored? Remember, from before? One of the furries (a unicorn) has a wet spot on his crotch, I think implied to be a cumstain. It’s pixelated out, which seems silly to me.

Frylock tries to solve the problem using science, but Shake torpedoes this by offering to give Frylock a massage and ripping off the diamond on his back. Shake gleefully celebrates obtaining the diamond. Dana Snyder highlights this moment on the commentary; how funny it is that Shake’s ultimate goal seemed to be to steal the diamond for the entire series and he’s spent this many episodes biding his time. Shake, even after experiencing the power of the diamond by taking flight and feeling it’s power, is so unimaginative that his plan culminates in him taking it to a pawn shop to try and get 20 dollars for it.

I definitely like this show better than Squidbillies, but this uses the same formula as the “Wing Nut” with a plot that is specifically unresolved and given an ending that flaunts how little this all matters. I liked this episode fine, but it benefits mostly from the fact that I’ve seen it fewer times than “classic” Aqua Teen episodes. I am perfectly pleased with these characters and these settings! I am glad to have watched this! What more do you want from me?

Stray things I haven’t mentioned yet:

Matt M stars in the commercial that Carl is watching. It’s live-action!

There’s a part where he shows sheet music and the writers claimed that it was the Communist Manifesto transcribed into music notes.

The shot of Cars jammed into Flylocks room is funny. Shake was using it as a parking lot for the furries.

The original ending was Frylock getting seduced by Hoppy Bunny, and Carl evolving into a griffin who slaughters the furries.

Do you plot a ship or see where it goes?

The answer honestly depends on multiple things. One is if the ship is canon (or pretty much canon) or not. That's pretty much something that most of the time doesn't need plotting compared to other ships. Another one is the mun and their preferences. If it's a mun I've known for a while and they're cool with it (and the muses vibe, of course), we can just jump into it and see where it goes. If they prefer to plot it out? I'll plot! It's whatever the other mun is comfortable with and if the 'vibe' is just there. Another factor is if the ship is in AU. Usually, those require, on default, more plotting than if something is in canon since a lot of that stuff is built from the ground up in general.

So yeah, in general, the answer is it depends, but I'm always open to ideas! What’s something you wish to improve?

I wish to improve upon being more 'confident' in my writing abilities. I generally have confidence issues in my writing (not my ideas, more so how I execute them / writing style in general). I know people write with me cause they enjoy doing it, and I need to keep reminding myself of that and not beat myself up so needlessly for one spelling or grammar error that pops up! This is all for fun, right?

What new addition would make your Tumblr experience so much better?

Aside from things working properly (like notifications and people not randomly getting shadowbanned or people getting unfollowed via a glitch), I think DMS could be greatly improved. A search feature inside of those would be great, as well as the ability to pin things. Essentially, how DMS on other sites work do it here. Make plotting and finding details so much easier! What are the trends when it comes to writing that you adore?

Dash Commentary!!! I love seeing people do commentary in or out of character on other people's threads! Honestly, I'd love to see people just...write whole video essay sorta things on the threads they enjoy reading! But I love people showing support to others content that they are not involved in any form, whether it's liking HCs or discussing them with someone, reblogging a promo, etc.

setting HeroAca about ~200 years in the future is a deliberate choice, as is also having it mostly mimic the irl present day Japan in regards to technology, attitudes, values, etc.

200 years is a long time - except for AFO (and Vestige!Yoichi in Deku’s head?), everyone else from the ‘advent of the extraordinary’ is dead. No one remembers that era. No one has living memory of the before. the current generations of characters in HeroAca have always known a world with quirks and Heroes - and because nearly all the big player characters are also younger than 50, they also only remember the era of peace that All Might reign over.

but 200 years is also too long for things not to have changed much. the justification is that quirks changed the world so drastically, progress stalled and society had to be rebuilt. supposedly, without quirks, humanity would be traveling the solar system.

HeroAca is a distorted mirror version of our world. We’re tricked into thinking it’s Same World + Superpowers at the beginning of the manga, before the bright-shonen-energy layers are peeled back to reveal something dystopian. And even then, the dystopia is revealed slowly that readers don’t realized just how fucked up things are unless they pay attention and look further past the seemingly rational justifications for handling Villains.

At the same time, as a reflection of irl modern Japan, the conflicts and questions are basically the same with a thin sci-fi filter.

not that Horikoshi is writing a social satire or whatever, but bnha does sometimes seem like sorta parallel commentary

Lily (from "Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus", what else?) and Lenin and maybe some other people? Watch "Heathers". Reactions? Or what they get transported there? Sorry, it's just that I'm in this Heathers-obsession phase and since I love your work so much (and the fact that Trotsky is kinda sorta like JD) I've been wondering about a crossover like that. I honestly have no idea what your answer to this will entail.

I’ve been musing on this one for a bit now but I suppose it’s time to dig in and answer.

First, I’m not usually a fan of the “X characters watch Y thing” so we’re going to avoid that. Also, to Wizard Lenin, it’d undoubtedly be yet another one of Lily’s weird 80′s movies that she loves so much and forces him to watch. It’s less gory than Predator, but dammit Lily, high school isn’t like this!

Getting transported there is a similarly weird story. It’s such a muggle setting that it really doesn’t mesh well with the “Sisyphus” cast. Why would Lily and Wizard Lenin be stuck in this high school in Ohio? Would they even do anything besides go “That JD kid sure is weird” and “Wow, the death count here is higher than Hogwarts!”? Point being, I can’t imagine they’d get entangled in the true plot of “Heathers” and at best would be providing riff track commentary on this crazy high school.

So, instead, let’s go the good old fusion route. Let’s make the world of “Lily and the Art of Being Sisyphus” just a bit more like “Heathers” and see how it pans out.

Because “Heathers” is all about the destruction of society from within, we’re axing Voldemort. Sorry, Tom, you got stuck in a magical mirror, eaten by bears, or something after 1943 and are going to be Sir Not Appearing in this Universe. As a result, there’s no Voldemort, but the deep societal issues that Tom took advantage of very much remain and are flourishing.

In this world, Lily is still a god, but is not immediately recognized as such by being the girl who lived. Instead, she’s just a strange, dangerously overpowered, nuisance that nobody likes. And her home life is trash.

I imagine in the world without Voldemort, Death Eaters, and a second war Lily and James’ marriage quickly crumbles. This is mainly due to the stress of marriage but also due to having a gifted, ridiculously intelligent, and creepy child. Within a few years, Lily Evans has the audacity to do what is never done: she divorces her pureblood lord husband and tries to vie for child custody. She loses, of course, as she’s a muggle born woman, and is basically banished from ever seeing her kid again.

James never really gets over this, Ellie looking so much like Lily Evans certainly not helping matters, and over the years grows very cold to her. She’s not a son so is useless to inherit, she’s nothing like him, and she’s just an all around disappointment. James very quickly gets remarried for political purposes, marrying a far less scandelous pureblood witch from pick your prestigious family, and they have a son meaning that Lily is no longer heir.

Lily thus attends Hogwarts as essentially the half-blood Potter. She’s for all intents and purposes a bastard child, one barely acknowledged by her father, and is also weird. As a result I imagine she’s bullied relentlessly much in the manner Luna is. For years.

I imagine Luna Lovegood is her only friend, as the pair have bonded over constantly having their stuff destroyed and being locked out of their dormitories.

Enter Lily’s seventh year and thus the plot.

The outside world is looming and Lily effectively has no future. Despite being the daughter of Lord Potter, she’s in a similar position that Tom Riddle was. She won’t be hired into the Ministry or basically any position thanks to her dubious heritage as well as the fact that no one likes her.

Mostly, she just wants out. She wants out of the country where everyone knows exactly who she is and where she came from. Her best hope for this is employment with the goblins but she needs recommendations from a professor. Her best bet is Slughorn, but while he’s always been awed of her ability after seven years of Lily the charm has worn off. Lily has never received an invitation to the Slug Club.

Lily realizes that to get out she must become popular so someone can vouch for her to Slughorn. Not to mention her life might become slightly, slightly, less miserable. So, Lily approaches the Heathers. Much like in the film/musical, Lily offers her services to them for the fee of making nice, pretending to like her, and getting her an in with Slughorn.

This spirals out of control as the Heathers instead do the makeover and make Lily suddenly cool. She’s suddenly invited to parties, people talk to her, it’s a whole new world.

Around this time, Lily in the room of requirement happens to stumble across the diary (nevermind how he gets there, we’ll pretend Tom just never managed to smuggle him out of the castle). Tom has been trapped in there, dying, and Lily obliviously informs him that all his ambitions and sacrifices amounted to nothing. There was no dark lord after Grindelwald, she’s never heard of a Tom Riddle, and everything she describes makes it sound like nothing has changed.

Tom Riddle inexplicably vanished off the face of the earth leaving only the diary behind.

Naturally, Tom is very pissed about this, and sets about plotting how he can return, trying to get Lily to open up by asking her for help returning him to his body. Lily does him one better and just returns him to his body without any sacrifice, casually remarking that she’s always been like this as long as she can remember, fully accepting Tom to yell “SHE’S A WITCH! BURN HER!” to her face as everyone else does.

Tom, however, is floored and everything he’s ever known to be true is thrown out the window. He decides to make Lily his new pet project.

Unfortunately for him, by this point Lily has a Slug Club to attend, only it goes horribly wrong. The Heathers have purposefully set about humiliating Luna, Lily’s only friend, and Lily has to very publicly break ties with them even though it means sacrificing her only real chance of leaving the country with gainful employment. Worse, the Heathers promise wrath the likes of which Lily has never seen before.

Lily, devastated and despairing, goes back to Tom and confesses all the shitiness of her extremely shitty life and how she doesn’t even know what the Heathers will do to her now. Tom finds this a little odd, as Lily has quickly proven herself the most powerful person on the planet, but he’s willing to play along. More to the point, Lily and Tom’s relationship goes from 0 to 100 as he is not only the first guy to show interest in her but he’s very very interested and very very hot. When Lily decides to beg Alpha Heather for forgiveness, Tom notes that he’ll come with, he’s better with people than she is.

Tom, having hit a low point of nihilist rage thanks to Voldemort having amounted to nothing, poisons Alpha Heather and dutifully covers for Lily by writing her suicide note. This works. There is an ecstasy of joyous grief throughout the school as staff and students alike confess how they never knew the true Heather. Lily is astounded, Tom is ecstatic.

Lily tries to return to life as normal, goes back to hanging out with Luna, but also has to introduce Tom to the school. Tom suggests she mind wipes everyone, that makes Lily uncomfortable, so she instead confesses what she believes is the truth in that Tom was trapped in an enchanted object. Dumbledore nearly has a stroke, but since Tom Riddle never became Voldemort, it’s more that this is a solution to an unsolved mystery and the castle is glad Tom isn’t actually dead. They’d thought he got hit by one of those muggle bombs during WWIII or whatever it was the muggles had going on.

HA HA HA HA, but no, Tom says in response.

In the meantime Tom gets to witness Lily’s weird and strained relationship with her father, his friends, and her younger half-brother. Tom points out that Lily seeking out gainful employment is unnecessary. Lily doesn’t have to be a part of society, like all these worthless people around her, she’s so powerful that she can do whatever she likes however she likes it. She can simply leave the country, she could become a dark lord even, there’s nothing stopping her. Lily’s never thought of it like that before, to become a true part of society, to be accepted on some level by that society, has always just seemed like the obvious path to her. What else would she do?

Due to this, Lily and Tom’s relationship continues to grow as they’re really the first people to see each other as they are. Naturally, this is when shit hits the fan. Thanks to Tom, Lily’s invited to another Slug Club with him (Tom can still become minister even if he was trapped in a book for fifty years! Slughorn says). Lily gets hit on and nearly sexually assaulted by some of the boys there, Lily gets out, but the next day rumor circulates around the school that Lily was in a threesome with them.

Tom Riddle sets up a ridiculous scheme in which he fakes their murder suicide where they confess to being homosexual. Lily is increasingly horrified. The school, once again, is in an ecstasy of joyful grief over the loss of these two, beautiful, oppressed, gay souls. Lily realizes that Tom is A Bad Dude (TM) and tries to confront him. He easily confesses he cares nothing about these people and has decided he wants to watch society burn. These are the people who thought he had died in the Blitz and did nothing. They are people who cannot and will not change. They’re the absentee fathers who dote on far less powerful, pureblood, sons. Tom has officially, completely, given up on the wizarding world and now he will destroy it as quickly and horrifically as he can. Lily, not belonging to society, can pour the kerosene on with him.

This is getting a little too gnarly for Lily and she dumps Tom.

Unfortunately, he quickly becomes exceedingly popular thanks to his angelic face, his natural charm and charisma, and his understanding of people. He passes around a petition for suicide and bullying awareness that everybody and their brother signs. What they’re really signing is pages from the diary which, much like Death Note, promises him both their magic and their life force.

Tom confronts Lily and admits he’s going to murder everybody, an entire generation of wizards and witches gone in an instant, AND LILY CAN BE HIS DARK QUEEN! Lily and Tom get into a fight, Tom accidentally murders the shit out of her and is devestated, only of course for Lily to wake up later after he’s left because she was unwittingly immortal this whole time.

Rising from the dead, Lily hunts Tom down before he can blow up the school, and sucks him back into the diary. Upon graduation Lily makes up with Luna, still has no prospects and plans to go and be homeless in India, has hesitantly gotten in contact with Lily Evans, basically has no contact left with her father, and has a boyfriend diary named Tom who might be let out in fifty years if he promises not to blow up a school.

I was thinking it’d be cool if they somehow befriended one another in art school, and because life happens, they lose contact for a bit, but Nana ends up vaguely overhearing a conversation between people discussing what had happened to Cass and decides to try to reconnect with her? I feel like what she went through could be a very isolating experience, so it might be nice knowing that someone she was close to at one point was rooting for and encouraging you to get better! They could’ve communicated through letters, phone calls, etc etc until one felt comfortable enough meeting in person.

VERA & HANA

Though both girls decided to pursue different styles of dance, I feel like they would have a lot in common considering they both got mommy issues, haha. Vera chose the more rebellious route, running away and completely cutting off her family so she essentially had to grow up super fast, and some days, knowing that she was still fortunate enough to dance was the one thing getting her through it all. I’m not sure how far forward this would be for Hana, but I could potentially see both girls renting the same studio and crossing paths a couple times, but never really speaking until one day they (a) see the other having a bad day and barely keeping it together in the studio or (b) sorta similar to the first point, but instead of showing up to the studio space, they’re a no show for a couple days/weeks and they finally see them some time after and kinda go like “Hey! I was starting to think you stopped coming...,” and the conversation kinda flows from there. So idk, an unexpected friend or like a big sister/mentorship! au typa thing???

OCTAVIA & MINA

Octavia hasn’t hit the muses page yet, but she’s a streamer who runs a pretty successful gaming channel on YT (and frequently streams on twitch) plus she also just launched a personal vlogging channel where she does like travel vlogs and other tech unboxing videos/commentary! So, what if Mina was one of Octavia’s oldest supporters, so she recognizes and frequently talks to her in streams or has recently asked her to be one of her channel moderators and they begin talking more frequently outside of stream/channel stuff.

I somehow missed this when you sent it like, three months ago? It must have been the start of my fall hiatus. Original post here.

5. What is the perfect environment for you to write in?

My bed. I love writing in my bed, whether it’s on my phone or with my laptop. It’s just so comfortable and warm (and I got a new mattress this year, making it extra comfy). It helps if the TV in adjourning rooms from other family members isn’t so loud that I get easily distracted, either.

12. Is there a trope you haven’t written yet but really want to?

Boring answer, but there’s not really anything I can think of off the top of my head. If I want to write a trope, I damn well write it xD There’s different versions of tropes I like that I’ve imagined but don’t have anything but a snippet of a scene (when I usually want more) but when it comes to broad trope strokes, I’ve done near all the ones I really enjoy. I can just spin different variants of them, hah.

18. What is a line/scene you’re really proud of? Give us the DVD commentary for that scene.

I mean, yeah, there’s several things I’ve written that I’m pleased with. Mmm, to select just one... *scrolls through stuff* I could point out a lot of stuff, but I am very fond of this line from The Calm Before the Storm, which is also used as the summary for the one-shot:

Stephen Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts and Possibly Unluckiest Man to Survive the Shit Life Threw At Him, took a couple minutes in the privacy of his nook on their who-knows-how-long trip to Titan to feel very sorry for himself.

I love dry, sorta black humour. A lot of characters I gravitate towards seem to have personalities that would cope with in horrid situations with that type of thinking while living it. This line really helps to show what my writing style is like - dry humor with a good deal of character introspection.

30. Tell us an idea for a longfic you want to write in the future.

After I finish the Earth-197320 series (which I believe will conclude with the fifth story), I want to fully concentrate on the story I was talking about last year that made a lot of rounds in amethyst-noir’s ask box-- pseudo!villain Stephen. Basically Stephen’s going to go back in time to save the world, and through his shenanigans we get the Team as Family trope that the MCU deserved. It’s basically an entire rewrite of the MCU. A lot will be happening on the Kamar-Taj side, as well, and eventually everything will need to come together. That doc itself already is like, 20 pages long from outlining and short scenes I wrote in 2019. However once I realized how large it was gonna be, I put it aside to focus first on Earth-197320. And with luck, my writing muses will be working throughout 2021 so I can finish off 197320 and work on whatever this next tale turns into. Because there’s no popular ship centering around it I don’t know how successful it will be, but I’m crossing fingers that in a couple years there’s still folks around who are interested in that type of content and it will get some traction.

some scattered thoughts on the end of mag 146:

generally hard to listen to episode, considering i'm right at the sequence of episodes that really showed me the first time how much tma is NOT found family (hey, there's always the last 11 episodes, right?)

i think it's interesting to consider how differently i responded to this plotline the second time around -- during the first, i was a lot less sympathetic to jon. this relisten leaves me a LOT more sympathetic towards jon in general (it helps to have a full perspective of what's going on), but if there's ever a time when i don't feel very sympathetic, it's this arc

there's a lot of interesting things that could be delved into during this arc, including the lack of black and white reasoning here, and the strength of a show wherein even the protagonist fucks up and does fucked up things, but i am not very good at making that commentary unfortunately. i get way too protective of jon to say many intelligent things about this arc. i sad.

i DO think this arc highlights what a horrible, horrible place everyone is in during season 4. i keep going back to 141, where jon extracts a statement and basira says that she thought jon cared about the cost of things. and he does, is the thing -- even if season 5 and jon's clear attempts to do the right thing weren't in the picture, you can see it during his exchange with helen in 146, with how upset he seems over marcus mckenzie. it's obvious that the live statement taking comes from both a need for survival, and the absolute shit place he's in at the time. it absolutely doesn't excuse it, but it does make it make a lot more sense

(that being said, sometimes jon does fucked up monstrous things and it isn't black and white etc etc)

the intervention just. generally bums me out. like everyone's reactions are understandable but maybe not entirely justified?? especially the dismissal of comparisons to daisy but. just generally leave this scene wishing that these bunch of traumatized people who have all been a) manipulated and/or overtaken by darker forces (hunt, slaughter, eye, etc) and b) have done some fucked up things (a ranging scale but still) could try to understand and help each other instead of consistently pushing each other away and arguing. i know that tma is not a found family story, but it still sucks (in my mind) that all these people who are largely in the same boat have so much trouble finding common ground

there's an interesting through line in season 4 of characters being taken over by powers, or dealing with previously being taken over by powers, and someone insisting that it isn't them only for them to say that it is. (melanie with the hunt, daisy with the hunt, martin with the lonely, jon with the eye, etc.) it creates some really interesting musings on how this all works -- how much did they choose it, how much were they manipulated in, how much was an accident or them just doing what they thought was best, and how much can they be blamed for their actions? there isn't a simple answer. but it's interesting to examine how the arcs end up playing out (melanie and martin break out, daisy doesn't and basira kills her at her request. jon embraces it, because he has to. and we don't know how things will end for him)

in all seriousness, episode 146, and season 4 in general, have generally got me thinking about melanie's arc, and her actions, and all of it, and interestingly enough (so far), i think she's one of the less culpable tma characters, in terms of having done fucked up things. personally, i think most of her actions are completely reasonable, considering the place she was in and the stress she was under. first of all , cristian was born in mexico , to two parents who were high school sweethearts and had him way too young ( his dad was 18 and his mom was 16 ) , but luckily enough his dad’s family ran a few popular pharmacies in Mexico City, so they were well off . cristian had a normal enough childhood , his parents were both pharmacists . his paternal grandparents paying for their education and livelihood . so it all worked out .

when cristian turned 8 , both his parents noticed he had a natural skill for soccer . which is funny because that came from his maternal side and they never bothered to introduce him to the sport . it was just something cris played on the streets with his friends.

immediately after that realization , his parents got him into the best training programs , camps , teams , etc - - - even sending him off to colombia to play in their leagues . therefore cristian bounced between mexico and colombia until he was 16 .

cris played soccer at an international level, being the nephew of alejandro castillo definitely opened many doors for him , especially when cristian got invited to play for american leagues .

from mexico to colombia , to finally landing in the united states , cristian played in minor leagues in chicago and LA . at 18 he started playing for Chicago Fire FC , just for a couple of years until having to move to LA to be closer to his paternal grandmother . she was living on her own and wanted family closer , and cris honestly missed just being normal a little bit so he ran for that opportunity , playing for LA Galaxy .

Up until recently , cristian actually resided in LA , living with his grandmother , going to practices and living a pretty simple life since he never saw himself as famous . he has famous family , and he left the spotlight to them , and they all knew he liked his privacy.

truth be told , cristian doesn’t like playing soccer , but he’s a talented midfielder , so much that he’s usually given captain . for some reason he’s really good at handling a team of people , which is funny because he’s pretty quiet until you say a word to him.

the only reason he continues to play the sport is because it’s something his parents are proud of, the only time they will really give him any attention for. his parents are . . . not so great . they worked all the time , and care more about earning any sort of income rather than spend actual time with their kid , and cris . . . is the only child . he’s their only child yet they jumped at the chance to ship him off everywhere .

PERSONALITY

cris didn’t grow up with a normal childhood when he started training . therefore he didn’t party that much . so he’s literally currently living his best life when moving to the states , he got a lot of freedom and just like his cousin , he’s pretty much the life of the party .

he’s that guy that gets drunk enough they will drunk sing the song with a bottle in hand . though he’s not much of a smoker , so with that he’s a little #boring . but then again he’s pretty stupid without the weed and alcohol .

cris is usually seen as the guy with a lot of girls for friends . . . but he’s probably hooked up with all of them too . he doesn’t really see labels , and doesn’t like labels on relationships . so . . . he hasn’t had a serious relationship , he’s indecisive af and flies away from stuff like that . his excuse is he has to focus on soccer over personal things like relationships .

Jaime gets spurned by Cersei and lusts for Brienne, who lusts back but has Standards and (self-imposed) Obligations. One of the few fics that does justice to the fallout of the Jaime/Cersei relationship, in which Cersei is treated as an actual character. A lot of this fic is Jaime being terribly chuffed about the fact that his wife can beat/kill the shit out of anyone who raises a finger against her and it’s glorious.

Travelling Far by astolat (E but more like M, 24k, canon divergence)Jaime decides to join Brienne’s quest to bring the Stark girls back home. Much family feels, it’s all terribly soft and sadjhk

AUs

Blood Bank by Coraleeveritas(E, 40k, doctors)Based on the Bon Iver song Blood Bank (which I coincidentally can’t stop listening to). Brienne is an ER doctor, Jaime a visitor. Both have children/family in hospital, they meet at the blood bank where Jaime is giving blood; things get heated like whoa. Minor subplot of Jaime (re)connecting with his children, Cersei is an asshole but virtually non-existent. Also I have to add that this writer’s style is AMAZING; it’s much more novelistic and descriptive than your standard fic, and absolutely beautifully written.

Human Touch by Lady_in_Red (T, 17k, doctor/patient and recovery)Jaime is suffering from phantom pains after the loss of his hand, and his last hope is a treatment Brienne offers. They kinda like each other, but Brienne is a Professional, so there’s lots of UST with a soft ending.

Madonna on the Balcony by QuizzicalQuinnia(M, 40k, artist/muse)Gosh okay so this is probably the only artist/muse fic I’ve ever genuinely liked. Jaime is a grumpy one-handed sculptor-turned-teacher who is sulking at some kind of resort thing, Brienne is a slightly traumatised rescue worker who is sent on leave after an accident. Jaime notices different parts of Brienne’s body from his balcony, and it Inspires him, so he seeks her out. Probably one of the more abstract fics I’ve read; it features a really nice lowkey commentary on art, beauty, and parts/wholes.

Mile High by bergamot(M, 20k, airport meet-not-so-cute)Jaime and Brienne meet at the airport; Jaime “subtly” arranges to move Brienne to first class because he finds here Interesting. Lots of excellent bickering, things get a bit heated, but not as heated as you’d hope judging from the title. Until they do. idk what I’m saying. XD

quarantined. by justme (silver_spring)(not rated but T-ish, 27k, doctors)Jaime and Brienne are doctors who get exposed to some kind of virus, so they have to spend ten days in quarantine. Fun times, exasperation, and awkward boners ensue. Enemies (ish) to friends to lovers.

Spy Games by Lady_in_Red(M, 16k, secret service/undercover)Three-part series which containing snapshots of Jaime and Brienne’s partnership from grudgingly tolerating each other to being stupidly in love. In the first and longest fic Jaime and Brienne go undercover in a suburban neighbourhood, and one of the subplots is that Brienne is forced to read Fifty Shades of Grey. Jaime voluntarily (and secretly) reads the damn book. Highly recommended, I wish there were more fics like this!

Working Girl Brienne series by CaptainTarthister (E, 170k, various)Smutty smut with feelings where Brienne meets Jaime in different professional situations, which quickly turn… less professional. My favourites are Manslayer (journalists AU, 22k, Brienne has to write a perfume review and Jaime is smitten), A Lion at the Door (hairdresser/celebrity AU, 45k, Jaime breaks up with Cersei and wants to lop his locks off, much smut ensueth), and At All Fronts (bodyguard/royals AU, 30k, Jaime and Brienne are in a sorta secret relationship, this fic chronicles the fallout of an assassination attempt and Realisations of Feelings).

Clean hands by Gwen77 (T, 13k, lawyers)Brienne is an idealistic lawyer; she and Jaime went to law school together and he occasionally tries to poach her for his company lmao. Brienne is forced to work together with Jaime on a case and they catch feelings, Shit hits the fan, and there’s slight temporary angst, but all’s well that ends well. Brienne has zero confidence and puts herself down a lot, which is kinda hard to read cause she’s so brilliant. 😭

Stacked by QuizzicalQuinnia(E, 11k, academia and libraries)This fic is ridiculously uncomfortable for me because it’s set in academia and dear lord phd candidate/associate professor relationships make me so so so so uncomfortable. BUT. It’s soooo goood ugh. Brienne is a phd candidate hunting down an obscure medieval source (i.e. a future and more successful me), and she challenges Jaime, who wants to recruit her as a research assistant, to help her track down said source. JAIME’S FIELD OF EXPERTISE IS THE HISTORY OF INSULTS FHDAJDGAJ. Anyway, he commits to the challenge because he’s s m i t t e n and library research/steamy times/manuscript abuse ensues. It’s terribly cute and hot, but I just can’t with the eating pASTRIES WITHIN THE VICINITY OF MEDIEVAL MANUSCRIPTS. SACRILEGE. Also this has my favourite first kiss scenario probably.

On the Night’s Watch by Miss_M (M, 105k, detectives)THIS IS HANDS DOWN MY FAVOURITE FSGJAGHDJA. Okay so the case is hands down disgusting (think Reek storyline in the books), but the story is more partner-focused than case-focused. Jaime is a bitter disgraced detective, who’s partnered with newbie Brienne, who is transferred after an Incident. Relationship starts off antagonistic, but develops into mutual respect and, of course, lust. Kind of slow-burn but not really. The development of the relationship and the whole detectives thing is really well done and I’d read 500 more of this fic it’s so good fhsjdk. This author has written a few other fics set in law enforcement, but this really is the best one.

Storks Ltd. by FaerieChild (M, 70k, coworkers and babyfic)So tbh the premise isn’t my thing at all, but I thought the story was really well done, so I’m including it. Brienne works at the Lannister company and desperately wants a child because she’s the last of her house. Jaime is in a relationship with Cersei, who won’t let him be a parent to their kids, which is the one thing he really wants. So Jaime and Brienne enter an Agreement where he fathers the kid, but also gets to be a father. Jaime/Cersei fizzles out, feelings happen, Jaime (re)connects with his already existing kids.

The Book of Love by hardlyfatal (M, 60k, airport meet-not-so-cute)Jaime and Brienne meet in less-than-ideal circumstances in an airport and are condemned to each other’s company when all flights are cancelled and Jaime happens to have rented the last rental car, and also Brienne happens to be a cellist in Tyrion’s orchestra, talk about coincidences. So they roadtrip (that’s a verb now) to their destination and catch feelings. The roadtrip part is absolutely excellent 💯👌 but obviously things get a little complicated when they reach their destination before the happy ending.

Flat White by shiphitsthefan (M, 10k, coffee shop)Jaime is a barista and obsessed with the tall and mysterious flat-chested lady who has a very specific coffee order.

Jaime’s Awkward Boner June collection (various)Does exactly what it says on the tin and it’s glorious. Definitely my favourite trope in this fandom.

Family Found Part 39: Misplaced Second Chances

Hunter and Stephanie show up to watch the Reader’s every move. They are witnesses to some of the hardest choices she’s had to make in weeks.

Warnings/Promises: wrestling violence, angst

Part 1: Welcome to the Team

Part 38: Squirrels in a Row (Royal Rumble)

For once, it looked like the show was going to run smoothly. You were in the garage clearing up some last-minute details when a long, black limo pulled up. It pulled to a stop in front of you and the driver rushed around to open the door. You swallowed dryly. Triple H got out first. He held out his hand, and Stephanie took the assistance. Plastering on a smile, you welcomed them.

“Hunter. Stephanie. What a surprise. It’s good to see you-“

Hunter grinned back. “Thank you. We tried to call ahead, but your line was busy.”

You shivered. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to miss you. All the general manager stuff, you know how it is. I’ve got quite the show for everyone tonight. Are you going to be watching from your box?”

Sharing a look, Stephanie stepped forward and wrapped her arm around your shoulders. “Actually, no. We’ve been impressed with how things are going, and we wanted to watch from backstage. See how you’ve had such good control over everything. Be your shadows for tonight. We hope that’s not a problem.”

It wasn’t a question. It was a test. “No. Not at all. Right this way. The first match will be starting in just a minute.” You led them out of the garage. They followed at your shoulders like crows’ wings.

The placements of the NXT move-ups were still finalizing, but Heavy Machinery wanted to prove that they belonged on Raw. They had challenged the well-established team of Heath Slater and Rhyno.

“If they win this match,” Cole mused, “do you think they’ll challenge AOP?”

Renee thought for a second, then said, “it’s a possibility. Depending on how tonight goes, I think they’ll do great. I’m more worried what will happen to them if they lose this match.”

“Don’t jinx them, Renee,” Corey sputtered. They digressed into a disagreement as the bell rang.

Hunter beamed as he watched from a backstage tv. Occasionally you glanced up from your clipboard to catch Slater dropping Knight. Or Dozovic triumphantly grinning as Rhyno bounced off of him.

The referee had a surprisingly difficult time keeping up with both teams. The tags were frequent but displaced enough to show off each wrestler and their skills. Rhyno engaged Knight on the floor, keeping him from entering the ring to help his partner. His back was turned as the upper hand switched to Dozovic, who did the worm before dropping on Slater. Knight escaped and doubled teamed just long enough to help his partner set up a pin, then kept Rhyno from saving him. Heavy Machinery won the match, already cheering with the fans like Raw was home.

Later in the show, there were going to be three matches for the women’s elimination chamber match. Bayley and Natalya were backstage talking about their matches when Alexa walked up. “Well look at you two being all buddy-buddy.”

“Keep walking Alexa,” Natalya shot. Bayley wrapped her arm across her shoulders, holding her from stepping to Alexa.

Miss Bliss gasped and fluttered hand to her chest. “I was just making an observation.”

Bayley stepped between them. “I doubt that. But I’m willing to give you the benefit of a doubt. Any other observations before you… go away?” Bayley stared at her pointedly. Patiently.

Just into Alexa’s plans. She smiled sweetly. “Well, I’m more confused than anything. Sasha and Bayley being in the chamber match sorta makes sense. But, Natty, if you and Rhonda are such good friends, why are you fighting each other tonight? Only one of you can have the spot.” When all Natalya did was growl, she turned her attention back to Bayley and hopped to sit on a crate. “Come on, help a girl out. You know better than anyone how delicate friendship is. It’s the reason you’re holding on so tight to Sasha, right?”

In a split second of pause, Natalya was the one ready to hold back her friend. “Sure, like you’ve never turned on anyone, Alexa. Turn before you get dropped, right? Fine. As the one on the other side of that exchange, yes, Sasha hurt me. But I am still my own woman. My own power. Hell in a Cell proved that. Still, we’ve got something working here. It’s not perfect, but it’s what I’ve got. So, yeah. I’m going to stick to Sasha. Partially to watch my back, and partially to watch hers. Because that’s what friends do. You have to do what you have to do. You can’t wait for your opportunities, you have to make them.”

Natalya guided Bayley away as her voice weakened towards the end. But Alexa kept going, pushing for all she could.

“Speaking of opportunities, Bayley,” Alexa shifted in her seat, “can you explain why both you and Sasha are going after the women’s championship? I mean, aren’t you guys already number one contenders for the tag titles? Sounds like you’re spread yourselves a little thin. Especially for such a delicate friendship.”

Bayley smirked. “Well, as far as either of us can tell, there hasn’t been a woman holding double titles. Sasha and I would like to try for it. The Riott Squad can wait.”

Alexa tilted her head. “Do you think that’s a good idea? Making them wait so you two can go after different titles? I don’t know, Bayley. Sounds greedy and poorly planned if you ask me.”

“Well then it’s a good thing we didn’t ask you, isn’t it?”

Natalya stepping into Alexa’s face inspired the small blonde to retreat from her seat. “And when did this turn into a Moment of Bliss?”

Alexa put up her hands in defense. “I was just curious. Geeze.” She walked away, leaving the other women to process what Bayley had said.

Braun already had his spot in the Universal elimination chamber, but he wanted a match anyway. So you gave him one with Bobby Lashley. He was running on a high. Lio Rush was flipped several times outside of the ring, no matter how fast he ran. As for in the ring, Lashley was putting the monster among men through his paces. He had a goal to gain himself.

“We’ve just been told that if Bobby Lashley wins this match, then Y/N will give him another chance to get into a chamber match. Well, how about that?” Cole said.

“Sounds nice of her.” Renee mused. “Except for the part where giving him another opportunity takes it away from someone else.” Corey cut off her next words by telling her to hush and to watch the almighty Lashley perform.

Either way, the second chance was not to be. Braun had enough. He caught a second wind, using it to break Lashley down. And with Lio already out of the picture, there was no one to cause a shift with a distraction. As Braun’s arm was lifted in victory, Dr. M’s laugh sounded over the speakers. He did not appear. But his presence and approval were clear.

Behind you, Stephanie and Hunter had nodded their heads in approval of the match, though Hunter did question the double chance even with someone as talented as Lashley. “Agreed, both powerhouses here on Raw. But why such favoritism, Y/N? I thought you were better than that?”

You sputtered. “It’s not supposed to be. Braun is a great wrestler, but he needs something to do every week or things can get a little… destructive. And I knew I could convince Lashley to fight if I promised another chance for the chamber, either of them. Maybe the promise was a little underhanded, but both wrestlers got what they wanted. Braun his match. Lashley his chance, which motivated him during the fight. And the crowd got what they wanted.”

“All around a successful addition to the show,” Stephanie finished. “A great job, Y/N.”

“Thanks.” The word stuck like glue in your throat. You let out a sigh of strangled relief as Seth and Dean walked into the space. “Hey, Seth. Dean. What can I help you guys with? Can’t promise much, but I’ll see what I can do.”

Seth shifted the Universal title on his shoulder. “What do you mean you can’t offer much? You’re the general manager.”

Stephanie spoke up before you could. “And as such, she deserves respect-“

You flinched. “Don’t fire me for saying so, but didn’t you guys say you were going to be my shadows? I didn’t think shadows gave their opinions.” Inside your chest, your heart froze in place. Stephanie’s expression froze too, then slithered into a smile that she shared with her husband.

Hunter’s cheek twitched a smirk. “We did say that. Our apologies. Please continue.”

With a nod and a shuddering breath, you did. “Yeah, I’m GM, but the show is pretty set. There’s not room for another match. So if that’s what you’re here to ask about-“ Their disappointment was immediate. “Um, but there’s some chamber tournament matches soon. Seth, why don’t you join commentary. Get a front row seat for your possible future opponent?”

“Opponent? You mean opponents? I’m the champion. I’m in the elimination chamber match, right?”

The fire in his eyes frightened you, especially with your shadows watching. “Rollins, can we discuss details later? I don’t have room for a match for you tonight. Commentary or nothing?” you shrugged. He looked past you to Hunter and Stephanie, then gave you a nod. You focused on Dean. “I’m sorry, there’s nothing I’ve got for you this week, Dean. But maybe next week? I’m still working on it.”

Dean did the same thing as Seth, glancing over your shoulder. With a grumble, he said, “fine.”

“I’m doing the best I can, Dean.”

“I know.” He rotated his shoulders and looked at Seth. “You heading to commentary?” When he nodded, Dean tapped his forearm. “I’ll walk with you.”

You watched them leave as Hunter complimented you on how you handled it. “You did good. It was a simple no, and they took it well. Who’s been helping you stand up for yourself?”

Over your shoulder your tossed, “Sheamus and Cesaro. They’ve been training me how to deal with guys bigger than myself.” With a huff, you finished, “though I never thought I’d have to use it with either of them.”

They talked amongst themselves like nothing had happened. “I need some coffee. Catering?” Stephanie asked. Hunter agreed. “You need anything, Y/N?”

Pinching the bridge of your nose, you turned to face them. “No, I’m good. Thank you.” Hunter gave you a heavy pat on your shoulder on their way out. This whole thing was starting to make you nervous.

The Riott Squad fought a local team, easily squashing them. Charly caught up with Sasha and Rhonda at a backstage tv for an interview. “The Riott Squad is proving themselves to be very dominant. How do both of you think your chances of becoming tag champions are going to go tonight? Especially you, Rhonda, since you’re fighting Natalya tonight?”

Sasha snickered as Rhonda stumbled looking for something to say. “We’re going to be fine. We’ve fought in the past for the Raw women’s title before. Beaten each other for it. Working together is just obvious. We’re two of the best in the business. Why have dozens of matches against one another when we could work together. I mean, Sasha and Bayley are doing the same thing.”

The other woman shrugged. “You could see it like that, I guess.”

“Guess?”

“Yeah. I mean, I’m teaming with Bayley because it means she’s not fighting me for a title. I get to compete for a title, she gets one too as part of the set, and we stay out of each other’s hair.”

Charly grimaced. “So, teaming with Bayley… is a means to an end.”

Again, Sasha shrugged. “You said it, not me. But if I win the elimination chamber, maybe I can go my own way again.” Rhonda looked at her with a grimace, not liking that stance at all.

In the background, Alexa walked by having heard everything. She looked between the women, unnoticed, and then carried on her way.

Also backstage, Dolph flipped his vest over his shoulder and rounded a corner. He bumped off a tall torso, smiling when he saw it was Drew McIntyre. The Scotsman growled, “I told you to stay out of my way.”

Dolph shouldered past him. “I don’t know why you’re so irritated. You’re still champion, aren’t you? For now. Don’t get your kilt in a twist.”

Drew roughly grabbed his upper arm. “If you think I’m going to let you hold your actions last week over my head for more than this moment, you’ve got another thing coming.” He glared at him until Dolph raised his hands in surrender. Adding a bit of a shove, he released him. “Where are you going so happily?”

“To challenge an old friend for a spot in a well-deserved opportunity. For your title, come to think of it. See you in the Elimination Chamber.” He chuckled and left for Gorilla as his music started.

A few minutes later, Tyler Breeze entered the arena with Dana Brook at his side. She stayed ringside for the match, giving Breeze notes and helping him watch his back. This addition to the match was not in Dolph’s plan. Her attention for detail was making the match more difficult for him. And his attention to her was making it easier for Breeze to land punches and kicks. Dolph shook his head, refocusing. He flipped the match around, sending Breeze into defense-mode. A zig-zag finished the match.

All according to plan.

Two weeks ago, Zack Ryder had failed to place in the Universal elimination chamber. This week he was fighting his former partner, Mojo Rawley, for a place in the Intercontinental elimination chamber. For all of Mojo’s effort, Ryder made good use of his second chance. He won this match. Wrist in the referee’s hand, he missed the way Mojo stared daggers into his back from his huddle in a corner.

A pair of Universal placements happened next. Chad Gable and Bobby Roode, while tag partners, both wanted to try to win a spot. Seth sat on commentary. He was talkative, but he dodged any mention of the earlier argument with you. Gable faced Jinder Mahal, accompanied by the Singh brothers. Although he had Roode in his corner, cheering him on, Jinder won the match and the spot. Seth wasn’t bothered. He’d fought and beaten Jinder before. No matter what was going to happen in a few Sundays, Seth said he could handle him.

Gable rolled out of the ring and gave his teammate an ego boosting pat on the back as No Way Jose entered. The second match was more friendly than the first. And as such, when Roode turned on the heat, Jose wasn’t ready. Roode gave his defeated opponent a handshake, then accepted the bear hug from Gable as Jojo announced his spot in the elimination chamber. Seth welcomed this possible opponent too. He hadn’t faced Roode in a while.

“This could be interesting,” he said.

Baron stormed into your office, ignoring your groan as your moment of isolation was broken. “I know what you promised Elias,” he said, low and threatening. “Has he picked his WrestleMania match yet, or do you have to tell him which one he can pick?”

It took a moment to breathe down your bristling. “Mr. Corbin, Elias had the same chance as anyone. Including yourself.”

“No, he didn’t. You gave him a better spot because he beat me before the Rumble.”

“And why are you just now getting angry about that match? It was two weeks ago.” You licked your lips, stalling. “I have a feeling that’s not why you’re here.” You crossed your arms and waited for his answer.

He snickered. “I want a spot in the Intercontinental elimination match. And if you don’t give me at least a match to ‘earn my way in’, well, Stephanie and Hunter are here. I’m sure they’d love to hear how you’ve been abusing power around here.”

Honestly, that didn’t really scare you. Part of you knew they’d probably chew him out more than you’d be in trouble. Still. You sighed and rolled your shoulders back. “Mr. Corbin, tonight I was approached by a local wrestler looking for an opportunity. He just got one. Congratulations, you’ve got a chance.” Baron smirked and started to leave. “Oh, and by the way, if he beats you tonight, he takes your place on the roster and in the Intercontinental elimination chamber… and you’re out of a job.”

He spun around to face you. “You can’t do that.”

You smiled sweetly at him, a face you had picked up from Alexa. “Yes, I can. The McMahons trust me as general manager more than they ever did with you, and as such, I have been given special liberties. Unless you would like to be fired now for attempted blackmail?” Baron balanced on the balls of his feet, seconds away from attacking. Rolling his eyes, he stepped back. “Fantastic. Head to the ring. I’ll send for your opponent.”

With a growl, he left your office. As soon as he was gone, you let out a shuddering breath. You sent a text to Gorrilla, letting them know who needed to be where. When you looked up, Dean was standing there. “Dean! Please don’t scare me like that.”

“How is it Baron gets a match tonight, but I don’t? Or Seth?”

“Dean-“

“What are you doing, Y/N? This isn’t like you.” Before you could answer, he spun on his heel and left. You struggled to regain some composure, despite the pain in your stomach.

The match was about to start when Dean’s music hit. He waved at the ring, sniggering as the local wrestler waved back, then walked over to join the commentary table. “Hey, Renee. Cole. Corey.” Like Seth, he avoided any discussion about your earlier conversations. But he was more than happy to make snarky comments about Baron’s style and lack of control. “It’s like he’s lost his marbles out there.”

To his defense, everyone watching the match agreed with him. Baron was unfocused. The local wrestler was gleefully using this to his advantage. It was a close match. The pin falls reached critical mass with Baron struggling to kick out before anything earlier than two-and-a-half. Thinking he was joining the roster, the wrestler tossed Baron out of the ring and began to celebrate.

“That’s not going to be good,” Dean noted.

Baron swung back in and caught him in a Deep Six. He made sure the other man wouldn’t be able to kick out by picking him up and dropping him in an End of Days. Growling in a mixture of irritation and relief, he got to his feet and let his hand be raised.

Grinning, he waved at Dean. He was going to Elimination Chamber. And so far, Dean was not.

The last three matches of the night were for three spots in the elimination chamber for the Raw women’s championship. Well, to become the number one contender for the title, since Ember wasn’t going to be in the match. Bayley entered the ring, pumped and ready. She groaned as Nia Jax’s music played next. The Irresistible Force entered the arena with Tamina at her side. Bayley gave a small sigh of relief as Nia sent her backstage. Their match was going to be between just them.

Or, it should have been.

Bayley was winning the upper hand. She had been able to keep Nia on her knees or at least unstable on her feet. Then Liv Morgan swung into the ring when the referee was checking on Nia and attacked the hugger. By the time he turned around, Liv was again out of sight and Nia was more than happy to take the win. She left the arena triumphantly, laughing as Liv rolled back in a went in to attack Bayley again.

Liv was forced to retreat as Sasha rushed out. Apparently, the only woman who was allowed to beat up Bayley was her, and heaven help any woman who tried otherwise. Sasha made sure Bayley made it safely out of the arena and waited for her opponent.

Several minutes later, Alicia Fox won a similar victory against Sasha. She had to fight harder before Sarah Logan got involved because Sasha was determined to not waste her opportunity. But there was no one to save her like she’d saved Bayley. So just after Alicia’s hand was raised, Sarah and Liv swarmed the ring and launched an attack. They didn’t leave until Sasha was unable to fight back. Then they left cackling, promising that they would give her another dose of damage in their next tag match.

Natalya entered the arena. She was all smiles, but it was strained. It quickly turned into a frown as Alexa’s music struck. Miss Bliss was followed by a techie crew who quickly set up for a Moment of Bliss.

“I hope you don’t mind Natty, but I’ve got some questions. For you too, Rhonda!” she called over her shoulder. “And hey, you should be thanking me for postponing your match a bit.” As Rhonda walked out and took a seat she added, “I can’t imagine either of you are eager to fight one another.” When neither woman answered, she continued. “This is a talk-show, ladies. It means you have to talk. What happens if one of you wins the Raw women’s championship after the Elimination Chamber? What happens to the-” she gestured between them, “the friendship?”

“Nothing.” Rhonda squirmed in her seat. “I’ve been here for almost a year. Natalya is my closest friend here.” She faced Natalya. “Why can’t we try one of those things where we help one of us get the title, then we’re the first challenge? Between the two of us, we could either rack of title reigns or help one another ensure long, successful ones.”

Not it was Natalya’s turn to squirm in her seat. “Rhonda, I’ve been in this business my whole life. I’ve seen-“ She sighed. “You know those don’t actually work, right? Someone always wants to be the best. They can’t be that if they’re always in their friend’s shadow.”

Alexa’s eyes glowed in triumph, even as she kept her mouth shut. Well, mostly. “That’s very interesting stances from both of you. I think it’s time we saw that match then. May the best woman win.”

As Alexa’s music played for her exit, the competitors walked down the ring together. There was hesitation from both of them at the start. Rhonda continued to hesitate. What Natalya had said was nothing she’d expected. Natalya sprung forward, beginning her attack. They could work this out later. Right now, she had to make her own opportunity. “Take what you can get,” she muttered. Rhonda heard and faltered in her steps. She caught a kick to the face that put her in the perfect position for a Sharpshooter. Natalya released her as soon as the referee told her Rhonda had tapped.

After all the mixtures of emotions, the women’s elimination chamber was set. Ruby Riott, Nikki Cross, Lacey Evans, Nia Jax, Alicia Fox, and now Natalya would have their chance for gold.

Hunter shook your head after he helped Stephanie back into the limo. “Well done, Y/N. I have no doubts now that this is going to work out perfectly.”

You flexed your hand like it burned as the limo pulled away.

Maybe a meta on Skuld's view of politics? Be it how she feels/thinks about politics among her fellow Goddesses or the politics of the people on Earth?

(I’m going to concentrate on Yggdrasil politics since she wouldn’t care so much about the politics of Earth. Besides being utterly confusing, disorganized, and extremely loud, Earth politics are...kinda sorta ehh off-limits? Wish granters, like Belldandy, are the only ones somewhat allowed to interfere, since they explicitly state that they can grant wishes for people to win lotteries, have harems, be #1 politician -- anything that doesn’t harm the Earth itself as an entity or the universe itself, like say, wanting to create a nuclear apocalypse!

[ Which is somewhat contradictory, if you look at it on the surface --the wealth of the planet, for one--but the way Belldandy says it, there are still some rules even with the absurd wishes granted, which are likely taken care of by the System Force. ]

As for Yggdrasil politics...hmrfm.

She already has enough problems regarding her own position as a debugger -- she is good at her job, no, the best. Yggdrasil, according to the manga and OVA, apparently has other debuggers but they mostly only have officially, or depend on, Skuld. That she is given all this weight pleases her, because she thinks she’s seen worthy. Debugging speaks to her computer skills, such as hacking, re-coding and coding from scratch, and the speedy hand-eye coordination she has with creating or disengaging programs. Heck, even on Earth, everyone depends on her to write anti-virus programs in quick-time pace.

But of course, slowly she realizes she’s still the runt in Heaven.

All of Heaven knows of her infamous temper and personality --obsessive with slickness of invention, with actual working machines, dependent on machines as opposed to her own innate magic--and whether that helps or hinders her is still up in the air. She knows about people knowing this reputation, and most times she doesn’t care, because in the same breath, people idolize her sister Belldandy [not as much as she does, hah!] and fear her sister Urd more.

She has an inferiority/sister complex with Belldandy, that much is true. She loves and adores Belldandy but often, she also wishes Bell wasn’t just that good, the amount of perfect at things she’s never done before. Not because she wants to see Bell fail, but because that’d mean the standard could be lowered to a level that Skuld can reach. Who can reach perfection, other than the Almighty himself?

But on the other hand, as much as she whines and complains [at times, rightly so] of how she’s never seen to be taken seriously by anyone in Heaven, save for her Norn sisters and maybe Peorth and Lind, that nobody comes to her unless they’re desperate, she truly thinks Yggdrasil/Heaven are awful for treating Urd the way they’ve done. Something she struggles with, because she’s loyal to Heaven, but nevertheless, it’s there.

Skuld has been kept in the dark for a long time about the very obvious fact that...well...Urd looks and acts different to everyone in Heaven, only because her mother is Hild, leader of Hell and her dad is the Fresh King of Heaven Almighty. [ The Almighty has usually been coded as light-skinned in the manga, though the OVA gives us this. ] In other words, a half-demon/half-God goddess, and the first and only of her kind. [That the possibility of this being a commentary on biracial Japanese, especially those who are half-Black, is not lost on anyone, tbh. But then again, that would be giving too much credit to Fujishima, who likely didn’t have that in mind when Urd first appeared.]

Canon gives us insight on how Skuld looks at Urd, and how almost ironically she doesn’t realize how Yggdrasil really works when you’re different like Skuld, but not as outrageously different as Urd.

First, the sister question (Bell also gets a comment in because this is important later)

Up until now, around 1991-1992 within the manga’s timeline, right only when Urd has been taken over by the Lord of Terror -- Skuld never knew they were half-sisters.

But...Skuld isn’t stupid. She’s innocent, sure, because of her youth partly --lots of things she starts to learn only after she goes the equivalent of Goddess Puberty-- but I imagine that once upon a time, even Skuld took a good, hard look at how...Urd was literally the only goddess with dark skin. How Urd was the only goddess whom people either insulted in whispers or feared just by standing in the same spot as others. How could you not, when it's your sister who’s being talked about in less than positive ways? Skuld has never been a fan of denial, unless it involves herself. It’s likely that nobody ever asked Skuld about it -- because again, Skuld has never been thought about among the higher-ups the way her sisters have been. Who’d think about asking her at all?

[ I have a personal attachment to this, because I also technically have half-sisters, but they’ve always been Sisters to me. This is still the only story I’ve seen where this sentiment is echoed. ]

For Skuld, Urd’s appearance and heritage doesn’t matter. Heaven may say different, but Skuld decides who gets to be her family. Urd has been there for her since the beginning, no matter what.

And of course, despite Urd being her sister, she’s still in competition mode so any opportunity she gets, she catches it by the hand XD

Secondly, the general way Skuld thinks about Urd truly. They are always fighting, always competing. Belldandy outright states that she’s jealous of the relationship that Urd and Skuld have, because it’s closer than the one Belldandy has with either of them. Say WHAAAAAAA--

Urd will always be the sister who protects her who is more powerful than Skuld and all Urd does [to Skuld’s kid mind] is do things her way instead of the way they’re “supposed to be.” Urd is NOT Belldandy, who is kind, pure and smart -- everything a Goddess should be, and that is what Skuld aspires to be. But Skuld doesn’t HATE Urd. She loves her, she’s just like Urd: they can’t admit they love each other in the conventional way. They SHOW it.

There are tons of moments like this, but I’ll pick one of the more recent ones within canon. I’ll also be taking a look at the chapters of Urd’s First Class Goddess, so you can get a little more idea behind Yggdrasil class politics.

At some point in Niflheim, Urd decides to convert to Full Demon, something she’s never done. Skuld, understandably, is worried. She doesn’t want Heaven to come after her sister [as has happened before!], nor to lose her sister. But Urd says to not worry, because Skuld is there -- and she trusts Skuld to stop her. This is important because again, as said above, nobody in Heaven really comes to Skuld for solutions unless they’re desperate. But Urd? Urd comes to Skuld at anytime and recognizes her sister’s smarts. She teases her, sure, but at times, it’s because she’s the older sister doing older sister stuff, and other times, it’s because poking at the beast is the only way to get Skuld to do things XD If she thinks she can surpass Urd, she’ll do anything.

Long story short, Skuld stops Urd and Urd goes back to her normal self. A flashback ensues:

Then something very, very telling:

...The FIRST ONE????

Something that canon tends to insinuate if you look closer, is that the Almighty obviously was there as their Lord to the Norns, but was never there as a father of sorts. In the words of a wise movie:

They can’t exactly have the father-daughter relationship that others would -- but their mother, equally so, didn’t seem to worry too much about the daughters. It’s later that we find out why, that their mother is Ansuz, the CEO of the Goddess Collective, and thus off doing CEO things. But canon shows us that the reason why Skuld is so attached to her sisters, Bell especially, is because those sisters had to look out for each other. They both raised Skuld in a way, absent parents looming. Heaven may have paid attention to Bell and her blooming powers, her more beautiful than beautiful looks, while demeaning or ignoring Urd and Skuld, but they never really helped or did anything for them. The movie adds Celestine as Bell’s mentor, and someone who helps her, but if you saw the movie, you, uh, get another impression that he kinda didn’t care about her as a goddess. To say the least.

Therefore:

Skuld knows the distinction, she calls Ansuz “mother” as opposed to mom or mommy, but the fact is, Ansuz is still her mother. That’s just it. But she knows the distinction, and it’s clear that she prefers to be with her sisters rather than in the place where her parents are.

Heaven may have rules and regulations but they don’t look out for each other. They don’t worry about each other. They only look out for each other if something affects Yggdrasil or Heaven, or any of the realms. That’s natural to the Gods and Goddesses, because their mission is to protect everything. They look out for everyone...but they don’t look out for their beloved friends or fellow Gods/Goddesses unless needed. Very few do, and those few are the Norns.

The manga can’t make it clearer than the chapter where Urd is given the test to be a First Class Goddess, something only the highest/most powerful goddesses can achieve:

Skuld is angry at Urd for rejecting the very thing Skuld aspires to. To be a First Class Goddess means to be accorded the respect of all of Heaven. If Skuld can pass the test one day, she could finally be taken seriously. Urd recognizes that, because it’s the same thought she had. In her case, it was to finally be taken seriously as a person, not just a half-demon.

This part is here to show you how Heaven works, when things are different:

White-and-black, not even referring to her by name. There may be a chance this also refers to her wings, which was a long-standing trauma for Urd long before these chapters. She’d wanted pure angel wings, so she could finally stick up her nose to Heaven and go “nya-nya, I deserve to be here!” Unfortunately, because of her demon blood, when she first summoned her angel, her angel showed her dual-side: black wings and white wings. Urd hated this reality so much, that she ordered her angel to never appear again. But as an adult, Urd has slowly accepted herself, and thus, can look at her angel, who mirrors herself, and love her completely.

That there is a parallel to Skuld and Noble Scarlet could be an apt opinion. Skuld took a while to accept herself as she is, instead of trying to chase the ideal behind Belldandy. But in Skuld’s case, even though her sisters [and by extension, Heaven] said that her angel was so small when she was first born, that she shouldn’t exist technically and that Skuld was immature to handle her. Skuld didn’t care because Noble Scarlet was her angel, and she loved her at first sight a lot. It doesn’t matter if she’s small, she exists.

Skuld, when confronted with the story of Urd’s angel, clearly didn’t get it either, because while Urd’s angel may reflect her heritage, it’s still her mirror. If anything, she doesn’t understand why Noble Scarlet was considered a bad idea while Urd’s angel wasn’t, based alone on how Heaven looked at Urd. [If Urd is scary, why is her angel not?]

Bad to the first class flashback:

Skuld hasn’t been through this, but she doesn’t know what Urd has gone through either in those moments she wasn’t around. If my math memory is correct, Skuld is barely a toddler here. By the time Skuld’s in her preteens, people have stopped calling Urd by nicknames, and instead called by her name and title, seen as an excellent SysOp Admin. Skuld hates how she’s treated by Heaven, but I assure you, she’d stop if she knew how Urd was treated. But she’ll never know, because Urd keeps it secret from her. She kept the results from Bell secret, because she loved how Bell was so proud of her, even before the test. Bell, who looks at her like a proud little sister, and has never looked at her like an unwanted thing. Urd’s lying habit, ironically, becomes salvation.

Bell kinda has an inkling of the real reason after this panel, and yet still keeps it secret from Skuld.

Because let me tell you, Skuld would likely bomb half of Yggdrasil just for rejecting her sister. She’d probably stop being a Goddess if push came to shove, when the institution to whom she’s remained loyal turned out to have been the one who’s brought excessive trauma unto her eldest sister. Even if there’s this:

As it turns out, the test giver only recognized Urd’s true desire, which was this:

[ But let’s be real, that test giver may have also didn’t want Urd to be a First Class Goddess because she’s still calling Urd by a nickname. ]

Urd recognizes later as an adult that she really doesn’t want to protect everyone, like Belldandy does. Why should she, when everyone has gone out of her way to demonstrate that they don’t deserve to be helped by her? Urd will do what’s right, and protect those who cannot be protected, will help those who need help. But she won’t do it because she’s forced to, or because a license compels her, though Bell truthfully does it out of the goodness of her heart.

No, Urd is selfish for the sake of her sisters. Shes the eldest and she knows how Heaven is really like. Look at the above when Skuld says Urd was the first to catch her. Look at me with a straight face and tell me how long would you let a little girl cry her heart out before finally deciding to help her.Urd protects her sisters because she knows that no one else will. No one else will love her little sisters the way she does.

This is also Skuld’s reasoning for some of her actions, even if she’s the more “follow the rules” type out of all three Norns. If her sisters, if Keiichi, if anyone she cares about is in trouble, then Heaven and Yggdrasil be damned because she will do anything possible to protect them.

If she decides that machines are useful for her to help with her duties or to save people, then who cares what Heaven thinks? They already think she’s silly for depending on machines so much, or loving technology so much.

But Skuld thinks Urd is selfish half of the time because she’s an adult, and adults lie and cheat, and are selfish to the core. Just like any adult goddess, Urd is selfish for herself. Does Skuld realize that Urd is selfish for the sake of her family? I want to say no, not for now. Why else would she still criticize Urd?

In general, there’s a lot of hypocrisy going on in Yggdrasil/Heaven, something that Hild, leader of Hell, has pointed out multiple times, both related and unrelated to her daughter Urd. Heaven controls most of the shares [=realms, people’s souls, etc.] and bestows love and happiness, yet, they’re the first to act the opposite when something disrupts the narrative.

Heck, Heaven [and Hell] could not fathom the idea of The Almighty and Hild being married and in love so much, that they had to divorce each other for the sake of their respective realms. Even in the last few chapters, Ansuz lets it be known that she may love the Almighty, but even she knows that the Almighty misses his first wife Hild more than anything and still seems to think about her. Ansuz believes that He will be sadder if he knows Hild’s in the vicinity close by. Hild admits the same too, that she won’t stop herself if she even saw Him again -- which is why they imposed on each other a law of never seeing each other, unless they want something terrible to occur.

There’s a great deal of things Skuld doesn’t know much about, and the only things she knows are because she was finally told by her sisters years after the fact or because it has affected her/her sisters personally. While she won’t necessarily find herself agreeing with a demon anytime soon, and her first loyalty is to the rules of Yggdrasil, she knows deep down that Goddesses and Gods need a reality check at times. She’s suffered her own share of situations enough to know, with regards to identity and true power, with regards to self-worth and titles.

In a sense, it’s something that I sometimes wonder if that’s why, while she would prefer to keep living in Heaven, slowly she prefers to stay on Earth. She sees the same fear/family/heritage/power politics happening on Earth, but because humankind is so vast and varied, she could find more people willing to stay true to themselves and generally not care much about class or nature. Politics on Earth may be crazy, but they seem better than Yggdrasil’s.
