Title: The Return of A Royal
Summary: Elia helps Din and Grogu track down the supposed Jedi she knows of, after nearly running off with valuable beskar she pawns off of her sister's ex-partner. Cara digs into Elia to gather more information, trying to decode any doubts that the two might have after Elia's attempt to disappear. After arriving to Nevarro for fueling and lodging before heading to their next destination, Elia drunkenly opens up to Din about her sister and the past she misses from Esno, alongside a few other things. Din attempts to get her to her suite for the night so they can have an early morning where he finds himself lingering much longer than he'd expected.
Word Count: 3,940
TW: alcohol use, tipsy behavior - a whole bunch of flirting, some fluff perhaps
Chapter 3: Truth Ties
The Mandalorian's patience was wearing beyond thin. Elia had led them down some stupid mission for her own personal gain when really she had the answer that he'd been looking for the entire time. As they all meet back on the Razor Crest for yet another trip to another location. As the ship starts back up again, Din pulls Cara to the side and grunts. "I need you to keep an eye on her. We're going to Nevarro for fueling and lodging and the first thing in the morning we're headed to the Jedi. Once we've got them - she's out of here." He snarls, the brunette looking to her companion with a firm look.
"Understood. You don't have to tell me twice." She's hesitant to say much else, all things considered. The trip begins once again and Din seemingly locks both women out of the cockpit, needing to calm down. Cara sits across from Elia with a tilt of her head as the woman seemed to stare off in the distance. "Why'd you lie?" She quips, Elia's head jolting to meet the Marshal's face.
"I-... I know my dad's been looking for her for a bit. If he knew," a hand raises in the direction of the cockpit where the Mandalorian had run off to, "do you really think he would've brought us there? Not to mention I was going to give him half the payment. He refused the full payment I offered him in condolences for being difficult. He thinks that I'm lying to him again about the Jedi." Cara analyzes her expression, seeing a rather clear show of sincerity and nods.
"Do you know where she is?" The bounty hunter grows quiet and bites her lip. Brown eyes look up as her hands fall open from their clasped position, a shrug reflecting her shoulders.
"Not really. Mari disappeared when I was young. Even then, she was kept from the palace." She explains, Cara cutting in.
"Right. Your father is a king. That means you're a princess then, doesn't it? Why didn't you stay put with your dad?" Eliaden gives a bit of a laugh.
"I mean, technically yes. He's not really got a kingdom anymore now does he?" She looks to her hands lips pressing together in a similar manner that her hands do. Esno had been gone for years now, and Elia doesn't really remember much of it. "The King wasn't... isn't very affectionate. He pushed my sister and I away and had us in a wing with my mother - had Mari sent away." Cara's suddenly reminded of the information that Din had provided the two of them earlier.
"He says that Mari has Force abilities. Mando doesn't really believe him... but if we find her she might be able to help us-" A very loud laugh comes from Elia and Cara's face falls.
"Yeah well, good luck with that. The Empire was the one who got their hands on 'er. I'm not sure she ever made it out. Even if she did she never trained. If the Mandalorian is looking for a Jedi she's not it. Father wanted to get her to, it was one of the reasons he sent her away. Claimed that he didn't want anyone to find her. Got her books and teachers to try and let her hone it but it was mostly a waste of tax credits." Elia reaches to the thermos resting beside her, hearing the Child coo softly. She gets up, pouring a cup of water and handing it to him carefully. She returns to her spot and the Marshal speaks up with more questions.
"You still didn't answer me. Why didn’t you stay with the King and your mother?"
Elia takes a long sip of water before letting out a disgruntled sigh. "Like I said, he isn't super affectionate. So after we evacuated Esno, my mom and I led normal lives until my father joined us. A few years after the loss of the kingdom my mother passed away due to illness. By then, our royal status was insignificant and I couldn't sit around and watch my father mope about the loss of his daughter and wife. So, I took off with a bag over my shoulder, my dad's clothes on my back. I found the freighter, started training with members of the Guild and haven't left since. I haven't talked to him since I left and he hasn't tried to reach me." Elia's face seems to fill with a great shift in emotion. Cara decides to retreat with her remaining questions, watching Grogu as she stands moving to join Din in the cockpit.
When she surfaces and falls into the seat beside him, neither of them say anything, sitting and watching the stars move as the ship traveled through the endless darkness. Din can feel her eyes seemingly burning through the beskar of his helmet - not that it was possible, but he knows the motherlike scowl is on her features. "What."
"She's got her reasons. And she's got some bad news for you." She offers, the male immediately looking to Cara with no hesitation.
"What could that possibly be." His voice is tense, annoyed since he'd finally felt some resemblance of resolution before the ally joined him.
"Mari's not a trained Jedi. Her father is lying to you. So, even if we did find her, there would be no real payment. The entire job is a falsification." She explains, beginning to speak again as a Mando'an curse exits the modulator of the male's helmet.
"What's your next move?" She leans onto the knee pad of her trousers, looking behind her as a metal noise comes from the cargo bay and a giggle radiates. Din seems to follow the noise as well, assuming the giggle means there was nothing to worry about.
Fingertips drum against controls with hesitation. He's unbearably quiet, deep in thought before he clears his throat. "Same as it has been. Nevarro, fuel and rest. We'll locate the Jedi she's talking about and get her back to Mon Cala and it can be the last we see of her." With the bitterness that leaves his tongue, Cara gives a nod, mentioning something about trying to get some shut eye and to let her know if he needs anything. She curls into the leather passenger seat in the cabin, Din slowly returning the nod as his gaze returns to the task at hand.
It's clear that Din has a great amount of distrust for the woman residing on the ship. He has every right to as well, considering she'd exploited both he and Cara, wasting their time to get a personal gain sorted and withholding information that they desperately needed. Despite that there were some other underlying things that didn't really settle in Din.
She pissed him off, certainly there was that. Yet, there was also the same cunning mind that he'd admire in any other bounty hunter. It was the quick witted responses, the sass in her actions, the intelligence from hours in libraries and studying - the sharp tongue that translated spite in the words of the Mandalore, the slight sway of her head with each step she took that matched the same motion of her hips...
Whoa. Din's breath hitches slightly, swallowing the foreign lump in his throat as he shifts slightly. Cut it out, Din. It wasn't like he ignored these things typically. They just never lingered long enough to bother him. Or at least the people didn't linger long enough. He'd had plenty of encounters with women who'd needed a night to forget about the world and Din had been more than happy to oblige them in that. It was rare for him to be the one wishing for such things. He tells himself that the emotion that was fueling these thoughts was primarily disdain and annoyance - but somewhere locked away in that armor of his was the truth.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
After arriving to Nevarro, Cara agreed to take in Grogu for the night so that Din could get a proper night of rest and be able to handle everything he needed to do before he took Elia home and found the Jedi. At this point, Mari was the least of his concerns, especially since the King didn't seem to have any motivation for the Mandalorian to fulfill the request. There was a low chance Mari was alive, no known location, no reward, and no assistance for Grogu and Mando in the end. The job in his mind was a complete failure.
He'd opened the ship at the nearest fueling station, not really giving much attention to Elia when she was quick to storm off the Crest with a clear action in mind. It'd been quite some time since he'd seen her and he'd hoped she'd swung by and put in a request for rooms for the two of them. Though, he seriously doubts that she would have been so sensible. He enters the Inn that he'd spent more than a few nights in previously. Nevarro had once been his home and the main source of the family unit the Tribe had been for him for so many years. Now, it was a much different place but still held so much familiarity. As he approaches the check-in desk, he's quick to ask the clerk for two rooms. The male points behind him to the Inn's plaque keyboard behind him - filled with hooks that held no keys. "No rooms? Really?" He scoffs, a light fist coming to meet the desk. "Thanks, I guess." He retreats from the lobby with the best next course of action.
The cantina is rather busy for the time of night, however, he figures that it made sense. There were a few gambling parties around the room, partners and groups drinking and dining - rather calm. He's scanning for a sufficient seat to sit and place an order to take away with, only to spot the very brunette who'd disappeared rather quickly from the ship upon touchdown. Din slowly approaches, watching her actions with a slightly tilted head. He notes the pairs upon pairs of empty glasses in front of her, one or two somewhat empty plates of food. She's leant into the countertop, an arm lying flat onto it, the other one being the sole source of support that keeps her upright. Her face focused on the glass in her spare hand, the material of the cup rolling on it's base as she moves the cup around in a circle. "Elia." The voice is cold and firm, enough to grab her attention and yet she doesn't move. He tries again, louder and with her full name this time. "Eliaden." It's this approach that gathers her attention, causing her to jump and look to him with rightful surprise. Her petite hand falls over her features, fingers pressing on tired eyes before the hand falls as the young woman sits upright.
"Sorry... I ugh, needed to get a bite." Elia's voice is soft, matching her expression as she leans into her hand and looks to Din. The slightest form of a smile meets her lips and the former bounty hunter feels that same stupid feeling from earlier. Bangs fall in her eyes softly, full cheeks accompanying kind eyes. The red blemish along the left one a cautious reminder of what had occurred earlier that day. He's careful as he takes a seat next to her.
"That's not something worth apologizing for." He notes, an arm leaning to the counter in a similar manner that hers had been in, prior to his arrival. "I wasn't able to secure any room at the Inn. I have a few materials back on my ship that can suffice for the night, or I could ask Cara if she has any..." His voice fades as the woman starts moving to shift a hand into her back pocket. The change in balance causes her to lean a little too far and Din is quick to reach out and grab her shoulder to catch her from falling to the floor of the cantina. A giggle leaves her as she completes the action she'd planned on making, her hand withdrawing with two keys from the Inn falling to the counter with a soft clink.
"Thanks. I got us rooms. Figured you would be a little preoccupied." She returns to her seat, pressing her lips together to seemingly stifle a larger smile. Din fails to stop his own chuckle from his mouth, realizing the truth of the matter.
"Are you drunk? " He retreats his hand on her shoulder, now realizing he was still holding onto her. Not that Elia had particularly minded the support. A hand moves to her uninjured cheek, leaning her arm into the counter slowly, a finger falling to the side of her nose as she cups her face, a bright giggle leaving her. Elia's gaze meets where Din's eyes would have met her own, only for her head to slowly shake.
"I mean... my criteria of drunk stretches a bit further than this. Tipsy, however, is up for consideration." Din's hand raises to reach under his chin, using the back of his hand to scratch at the underlying beard through cloth material that covered what the helmet didn't.
"Oh is that the case? Three, four... six drinks later?" He truly can't help the smirk that's hidden under his gear, the inflection in his voice matching it even if it wasn't clear. Elia is rather surprised to see him in such a relaxed state of discussion - especially considering her brilliant plan from earlier that led to the sore bruises on her skin. She knew he wasn't too fond of her and he had every right to be upset with her. She'd lied to him about the altercation, tried to run off without helping. It was her discussion with Cara that made her long for a buzzed mindset and some quiet time to think. It made her think back on a past she longed for, before she was on her own, seemingly lost in the galaxy, finding any port that would keep her stationed for a night. And with each empty glass, her mind wandered further.
It brought her to the initial meeting with the Mandalorian in front of her from earlier that day. There was a glint of allure and perhaps fascination. She'd heard so much about the famed bounty hunter, the tales and rumors of fighting within the Guild, going against a job - taking payment with him despite falling back on what he'd been assigned to do. Knowing what she knew and the gleam of light that came from the reflection of the beskar on the built frame - she was intimidated and rather interested. That only worsened with the introduction of the only known characteristic of the human under the armor - the voice. It was new, unrelenting and beyond attractive to Elia. She knew she needed a favor out of the man but she'd be a downright liar if she'd not let her mind wander. Especially with the down time they'd had traveling to their first destination. And then the altercation. Makers be damned there'd been something in that alleyway that left her mind reeling.
And now, here she sat, pulled out of the fascinations and ideas she'd let run wild for the time being by the very man on her mind. Every part of her knew there was no way anything between them would ever come to fruition, not after the stunt she pulled this afternoon. Yet, she's slightly hopeful, as she can see so much beyond the very hard, steel exterior. Elia finally turns off her inner monologue, returning the reality in front of her to give the Mandalorian a response finally.
"Yeah... maybe. It just... it let me think back. Cara had been asking some stuff and it just... put me in a weird spot?" She offers, Din waving a hand to offer a continuation. The woman lets a snicker past her lips, before looking to the bartender briefly as she starts on again. "My father kept me and my sister separated from the kingdom. My sister moreso since her presentation of her powers," she offers, taking a small sip of the drink in her hand, only for gloved hands to slip it from her and to the other side of the counter. Elia gives a scoff, the two of them laughing before she continues, a smile on her face, "anyways.. it brought me to before I was on my own. I had this sister I seemingly never knew because she was whisked away and I spent ages reading and studying for a world I never got to see. So, after Mari's disappearance and my mother and I's evacuation, I finally got to see the galaxy, what the communities and other worlds were like, versus reading them from a book. So, I guess that's kind of why I never looked back after Esno was destroyed. I had no royal duties, no real place.. I was free to be someone else." She explains, looking from her hands to Din. She'd expected a much different tone when she did look to the Mandalorian again, only being greeted with the blank and menacing vision of the helmet instead. Suddenly, she's feeling beyond ridiculous to be giving out so much of herself to someone she wouldn't know in the next day. So she stands, a little wobbly, pulling credits from her pocket. "We should probably go to the Inn. I know you want to get out of here early tomorrow." She speaks rapidly, thanking the bartender before quickly starting to the exit of the cantina.
Din sits watching her move from her seat, rather confused, feeling the annoyance starting to arrive again. Now what was her deal? He stands, leaving a small amount of credits for the bartender for the trouble of taking up a seat at the bar. "Elia." He starts off following her, feet catching up with her rather quickly. He tries again, the woman ignoring him and finally reaching her door for her accomodations for the night. As she starts to work at the lock, Din reaches out, his arm blocking her attempts to get into the room. She groans and steps back looking up at him with a wavering gaze.
"Please just let me into my room, Mando. I didn't need to just... unload all that onto you. You don't give a shit, and come tomorrow night I'll be back on my own ship, you on yours finding the Jedi you're so desperate for."' Her voice is seemingly harsh and the taller of the two of them is beyond confused.
"Would you give me two minutes? You never asked me what my thoughts were on what you'd said." He defends, looking to her, his own eyes meeting the young womans. It was moments like this that made interactions like this so much harder. He wants to appear a lot less... menacing. Less distant, but he knows he can't express that though a reflection of metal.
"Okay fine. What's your thoughts on my pathetic life?" She quips, arms crossed, key in hand as she watches him. Din pulls his arm from the door frame, moving cautiously as to not startle her as he takes the key from her hand and opens the door to the room.
"Take a seat and maybe I'll tell you." With the door shut, Mando moves to the refresher, grabbing a glass and filling it with water before entering the bedroom and handing it to Elia before sitting across from her on the bed. "Thanks." She grumbles, taking a slow sip before Din clears his throat.
"You didn't need to tell me all that, you're right. But you did, and that's that." He speaks before starting into his next tangent. "As for my thoughts, your past isn't what you might think it is. It'll be deemed different for everyone who hears it. Just know that it doesn't devalue it because you feel lesser because of it." It's rare for the older of the two of them to be so transparent, yet it was one of the few ways he knew how to ease other's fears of him. To become more human. Elia looks at him, hands cupping the glass in her hands, head falling to look at the liquid. She looks up to him again with a weak smile, a nod of her head accompanying it.
"Well... you've given me something to reflect on the next time I decide to go six drinks in." She teases, giving a small giggle, letting Din seem to relax a little. He joins her in a nod as silence falls over the room. Elia sets the cup down before getting up and letting her hands fall to her sides. "Alright. I'm gonna call it a night, yeah?" She suggests, the Mandalorian giving a silent agreement before joining her in standing. The silence returns only for Elia to stop him when he turns her hand reaching out to take his. "That... wasn't a request for you to leave." The two stand dangerously still, only unil Elia lets her hand fall before turning to the other side of the room. "Nevermind. Have a good night, Mando." Din looks at her as she pulls up her bag to her bed, starting to gather what she'll need for the night. He turns towards the door, opening it and pausing in the doorway. A hand reaches up for the light panel and switches it to the off position. Elia's eyes move to the doorway where the only light lingers. Din speaks up.
"Can you see in here?"
"With the door open, I can..." She's not following his thought process in any manner. The male figure then shuts the door, falling back into the room once again, quickly reaching up to the release on his helmet, pulling it from it's position. He sets it on the nearest surface he can find, letting his eyes adjust to the dark as best as he can before finding himself in front of Elia.
"How about now?" He asks as still gloved hands find her waist slowly. There it is again. The same voice that had caught her attention that very morning. Yet it was so much clearer, so much kinder, more human. The woman's breath catches in her throat as she speaks.
"I- No, I can't see." Her voice is no louder than a whisper, scared that any higher volume would turn him away. A snicker leaves the other before a hand lifts from her side.
"Good." The feeling of soft and worn leather is introduced to Elia's cheek as Din cups it, bringing her closer to him until their lips meet in one of the slowest moments either of them had experienced in days. Elia's scared to reach out, lingering so heavily in his presence, the hand holding her waist being tugged closer to him. The same hand begins to trail up her side until Din's hand is guiding hers to his arm, as he pulls away softly. "I can stop now. Otherwise, you're more than welcome to put your hands on me." Elia lets out a small sound, that neither of them can identify. Maybe it's one of disbelief, or excitement, she's unsure of but she pushes past it with a snicker.
"Don't dream of it, Mando." She retorts, being the quick one now as her hand gingerly reaches up behind his neck to bring him back down to her again.

Do You Remember?
707 x 606/Seven x MC
Hello, guys, long time no see! Hehe! We are revamping this blog -- we are upgrading from VandyBella content to Mystic Messenger collabs in general. This one-shot was written during a short period we shared in an RP (Another Story Centered) as a story mode.
Some background! 606 is 707′s bad ending MC. After being in a car accident with Seven, 606 is taken to Magenta. Reset happened before the two were able to reunite and the lovers never meet again until...
A new game starts and Seven ends up in Mint Eye. He’s trying to save his brother when Mr Ray is deemed MIA from the messenger and a mysterious assistant pops up. He chats in the messenger with the assistant and they agree to meet...
Hope you guys enjoy the story under the cut!
Believer A707: Thank you Believer A606......Can I ask you something? Believer A606: Okay... Believer A707: Why are you here? In Mint Eye. Believer A606: Because... I made the wrong choices... but don't matter now... I got a restart here. Believer A707: Lololol Restart, huh? Hahaha...I wish the game would restart right now Hahahahahaha...But...wrong choices...you're not here because of your own will...? Is that what you mean? Believer A606: I mean this is the result of the choices I made, I'm here now. Believer A707:...This place...I don't think...Happiness can be found...Hahaha, Can you really be happy here? Believer A606: Of course you can... A707 I think you need help. I don't think you are feeling okay Believer A707: Hahahahaha. You're right. I don't know what to feel. Right now I need to see the Savior Believer A606: No, you can't see the Savior like this, you'll make her sad. Believer A707: Hahaha Sad? I think...She'll be happy to see me! Surprised but happy... Believer A606: I guess... She loves all the Believers... but your attitude is not ideal right now. You'll get in trouble maybe even... Believer A707: Maybe even...? Believer A606: Be sent away to retreatment...Do you want that? Believer A707: Hahahaha I only want one thing right now… happiness ...But not for me...Was Mr Ray sent to retreatment? Believer A606: I cannot say that, I don't know, A707, we will get in trouble if we keep talking about this here. Believer A707: ...You're right, I should go. Believer A606: I think you need help... come to my office... not Mr Ray's. The code for the door is space_station, but I have to go now. Believer A707: Thank you. Believer A606: See you soon. Believer A707: Yes Hahaha Believer A606 has left the chatroom Believer A707: ... Please… Be safe... Believer A707 has left the chatroom
Space_station.
Seven stares at the log, at the words written on the screen. And the fact that this new Believer...this girl…
606.
Everything feels so complicated. It feels like pieces of the puzzle are falling into place. But it’s all wrong. She shouldn’t be in this reset.
And where is his brother…?
Seven closes his laptop and hides it in a loose floorboard, before covering it with the carpet. A cliche hiding place, but he doesn’t really think the Believers would check there. Besides...it’s wired to self-destruct if it recognizes a face other than his.
The red-head pulls his hood over his face and starts making his way towards her office, 606’s. He doesn’t know what to expect, this is an entirely different game… But he’s ready to play it.
And this time, he wants a good ending.
She logs out of the chat and her mind starts to wander… back to days where she just like now talked to someone who made her smile.
A606 touches her lips, the pad of her thumb running over the smile on her mouth.
For a moment she forgets all her duties, all the things she has to do and the shoes she has to fill in. A wave of responsibilities was thrown to her for being his assistant… where the hell is he? He is supposed to be with the Savior but knowing her and knowing what really lies under the sweet smile of the blonde A606 is worried.
She hears the footsteps outside the door and closes her laptop.
Now or never.
The red-head raps his knuckles against the door twice, blinking to make sure his contacts are in place. When he hears her voice, telling him to enter, his heart skips a beat. Turning the handle, he goes in…
And is met with her.
A606.
MC.
In the previous reset, he had lost her...and now. Now she’s here, with mint streaks in her hair. Those eyes, those lips...the same ones he gazed into, the same ones he…
No... don't think about it. You can’t, Luciel.
Her amethyst eyes are met with golden ones and her breath gets stuck in her throat. He’s like a mirage, from a story she remembers, a story that plays every so often in her head.
She swallows trying to find her voice, “A707?”
“Yep. That’s me. A707.” Seven answers, offering her a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “You’re...606.”
“Yes…” She is frozen in place, trying to figure out if this is reality or the effect of the drink she had minutes before he arrived. She feels her fingers twitching but does her best to look normal. “Thank you for coming here, I got worried when I talked to you earlier.”
You have no reason to worry, is what he wanted to say. But he can’t get those words out. Because he’s worried too. Worried...about her. Seeing her like this, her fingers twitching like that. It does nothing to calm his already jumbled mind.
“I should be the one thanking you, A606. For inviting me here.”
For giving me a few pieces of the puzzle.
He should be angry. Seven should be angry that whoever is preparing this sick game brought her here, to this hellish place. But at the same time...she’s here. She’s here and she’s right in front of him.
I can save you.
His voice weaves a feeling in her chest, one she had long forgotten… or wish she had.
This feeling only brings doubts to the truth of the salvation she found. She is a new person, the one who loved and smiled, that girl no longer exists… that girl doesn’t deserve her past or the people in it, this new girl doesn’t deserve him.
“I just want to avoid trouble, A707, I don’t want you to do something that will bring that trouble to me.”
I don’t want you to be in danger…
“Oh, trust me, I won’t do anything to put you in danger.”
I lost you once, I’m not losing you again.
“But tell me...A606. Are you in any sort of danger?”
She can’t withstand his gaze so she looks away and removes the big black robe covering her small frame and places it on the chair.
“Danger? Of course not… if anything it would be getting fired.” Her lips curl up just a tad.
There is a scrunchie around her wrist, she uses it to hold her hair into a ponytail. It’s not until she is done fixing her hair that she realizes what she is doing… being too normal, too familiar… too intimate.
But what’s done is done, she sits on the chair and looks up at him.
“So, A707, are you doubting our faith?”
Everything feels too familiar. It’s too soon, the reset has barely sink in...God. Seven takes a deep breath and focuses his eyes on her face.
“Our faith...what is it you believe in, A606?”
Why are you HERE? In Mint Eye!
His question feels like a protest.
“I believe in Magenta of course, in our Savior. In the idea that everyone can be happy here. That no matter what you did before, you get to be happy here.”
This is a second chance…. You don’t belong in this one, though.
“But, A707, why are you here?... I mean since it seems you are not sure about your faith.”
Seven stares at her, trying to decode the meaning behind her words. He wonders if she remembers...but no. It doesn’t usually work that way. MC always forgets, always forget him.
But he never forgets about her.
Her words though…’no matter what you did before, you get to be happy here.’
Could she actually…?
“Oh,” he says out loud, clearing his throat as he grins at her. “I’m here because I want to offer salvation...to someone precious to me. Though now it seems that I get to save more than one person.”
He wants to say more, to tell her the truth, but that’s not how it works...if he reveals anything, A606, the other guests, the RFA...Saeran. All of them will be put through the horrible process of reset again. And he doesn’t want that, not when the game is still in progress; it hurts more when it’s cut so suddenly.
“How did you meet the Savior?”
“Salvation… well, you’re in the right place.” She smiles and her fingers fidget on her lap. “I met her when I came here… Mr Ray is the one who brought me to Magenta. I owe him who I am now.”
She wants to ask, curiosity starts to go off… she wants to ask if he remembers and if they’ve met before.
“Listen, A707…” She looks at him, “you… I… I’ll help you. If you want to save someone. I will help.”
Help me save you.
If there’s anyone he wants to save...It’s Saeran...and it’s her. His 606. The woman he wanted to take to the space station.
“Thank you...that’s really kind of you, 606.” Seven gives her a chuckle. “But I really think you should keep yourself safe too. Don’t worry, I’ll do everything I can to help you too.”
To keep you safe. Make sure Rika doesn’t suspect you...Make sure his brother doesn’t make her his next target.
That’s right. He’ll delete their logs. Saeran can’t see his conversations with MC, or he’ll know...and Seven can’t afford to lose either of them.
“You don’t have to worry about me, A707. I worry about you, the way you speak… it could bring danger to you…” She should take back her words.
“I mean, you should be more careful on the way you act…” She focuses her eyes on her trembling fingers. “I don’t think I’m being a good believer right now… maybe I need a session with the Savior too.”
He can’t help it. Seven kneels in front of the woman and takes her hands in his, grasping them tightly. He keeps his head bowed, his face hidden so she doesn’t see how much this is hurting him, how seeing her like this is painful for him.
“You don’t, 606...you don’t.”
He closes his eyes. Why does this keep happening to him..? People around him always get hurt. He runs his thumb across her skin, feeling her trembling hands underneath his touch.
“I’ll help you, okay? Please wait for me...I’ll help you, 606. Don’t...don’t go to her. Please.”
His touch makes the trembling worst, her heart drums in her chest so fast she can feel it trying to jump out.
“W-what are you doing?” She moves her hands but can’t bring herself to free them from his grasp. “A707 this is… you shouldn’t…”
He lets go of her, getting to his feet. There’s a slight tint to her cheeks, and it takes all his willpower not to tease her about it. Just like before, MC.
“I’m sorry, 606. Hehe, I was being rude~”
He puts another fake smile on his face. Playing the part of the goofy hacker again. She’s blushing but...maybe she doesn’t remember. How could she?
“I hope you don’t see the Savior just yet though...I really want to go with you when you do.”
She raises an eyebrow recognizing the happy mask he puts on.
“Yeah, it’s alright, I don’t think I can see her now. She’s busy with the party preparations. But if I do I won’t take you with me. Not when you’re acting so weird.”
Seven laughs at that. Weird.
Once before, they were ‘weird’ together.
She opens her laptop and clicks on the file. She stands and walks to where the printer is.
“Here is the schedule, keep it safe, A707.” She hands him a couple of papers. “... and whatever is that you need them for… keep me out of it.”
Seven takes the papers from her, careful not to brush his fingers against hers again. The desire to touch her is too strong, and it’s never easy for him to keep pretending like he doesn’t care about her. He shoves the papers in his robes, then looks at her again.
“Thank you, 606. I always knew I could count on you.”
He wants to say more...God. He can’t. He mustn’t. All he can do now is watch over her from afar, keep her safe as best he could under the circumstances. Seven turns and heads for the door, opening it a little. But before he leaves, he shoots her another glance. A smile.
“And 606…”
“I would love to go to the space station with you someday.”
The redhead steps out. Closes the door behind him. And silently walks back to his hideout, his heart even heavier than before he walked into the room. He only hopes...that this time, the game would let him save both of them.
She doesn’t know if she should laugh or cry… the emotions swirl in her chest.
She walks to the door and presses her forehead on the cold surface. Her eyes are closed but she can see the blinking lights of the computers.
“... 606 is not my name… do you remember..?”

50 Day Challenge: Hatake Kakashi
Read the Full Challenge on AO3
Prompt: Write a scene using the line “Wait, these codes aren’t right.”
Song Inspiration: Answer- Ateez
-------------------------------------
A breeze blows the curtains of an open window.
It’s a cold, quiet night. The wind blows into the room, rustling the pages on top of the desk. There’s a light scratching noise coming from the floor. The sound gets louder, the scratching turning into grinding until there's a pop from the floor and a tile is pushed up and soundlessly moved to the side.
A black silhouette slowly climbs up through the hole and takes a spray from their pocket to expose the laser security in the room. They begin nimbly ducking, weaving, and bending around the lasers until they reach the table. Slightly pulling down their mask, they breathe onto the fingerprint scanner on the table, revealing the owner’s fingerprint and deactivating the security system.
Another, much larger silhouette also crawls out of the hole and briskly moves toward the desk, muttering quietly into his headset, “I can’t believe that worked.” His partner rolls her eyes as she continues trying to gain access into the system. He leans over and whistles when the information comes up on the screen, “That’s a lot of weapons for a humanitarian mission.”
She smacks his shoulder with one hand while still typing with the other, “Stop that. We’re just here to copy what we need, then we’re out of here.”
“I’m not doing anything though?” He says quietly with an eyebrow raised towards her in defiance.
“Exactly. So, stop your yammering and let me do my job,” she mutters. Her hands begin to move faster along the keyboard as more windows pop up on the screen. Kakashi places one hand on her waist and feels her stiffen before she continues typing rapidly to keep up with the system, “What are you doing?”
He shrugs and pulls her closer to him, “I figured if you were going to get mad at me anyways, I would give you something to yell about,” he leans closer until she could feel his breathe by her ear even with his mask on, “Though I’d prefer using a different way to make you scream.”
The hairs on her nape stood on their ends and she finished up the last set of codes before pushing his head away with both hands and hissed, “Cut that out! In case you forgot! We’re on a time crunch!” She put both hands on her hips, and to Kakashi she looked like a kitten trying to threaten you with their little claws. He wasn’t a cat person, but she was gorgeous when she got riled up.
He put both his hands up in surrender as she huffed and turned back to watch the files copy. While she did that, he started looking around the room and noticed a painting that was slightly tilted. Furrowing his brows, he pulled out his phone to look at the picture and diagram they were given of the study and was back by Hikari’s side in an instant.
She looked at up him wide-eyed and said disbelievingly, “Wait, these codes aren’t right.”
He pulled her towards his chest and murmured, “Yeah, somethings wrong. The room is different than what we were given.”
Hikari leaned towards him and reached into his vest pocket to grab the decoder, “The files are useless. It looks fine on the surface, but once we take it back to headquarters it’ll hack into the base. If I hadn’t tried decoding parts of the info by hand, we would’ve introduced a virus into the mainframe.”
Kakashi hugged her tightly to him, “We were set up.”
She gripped his vest with her hand, “What do we do?”
He looked at the decoder in her palm, “What are the chances that thing is recording us right now?”
Hikari gripped the device tighter, “100%. I’m covering the audio mic, but it probably allows them access to watch us through the video camera’s in this room.”
Kakashi snorted into her hair, “So much for deactivating the security system,” she elbowed him in the gut in retaliation.
The two savored each others presence for a few moments before Hikari spoke up, “We only have five more minutes before they blow this place up.”
Kakashi turned her towards him and cupped her face in his hands, “Then I guess we’ll just have to make the most of it,” before covering her lips with his. She didn’t know when he pulled down both of their masks, but at this point she couldn’t bother to care as she dropped the decoder on the floor to slide both hands into his hair. The decoder slid underneath the desk, recording the muted sounds.
The kiss felt like a blaze, burning into her as he used his arms to mold her to him. His tongue probed the seam of her lips, and she gladly opened for him as their tongues danced together. The two broke apart for a moment to take a breath, before Kakashi took the chance to pull her back into another kiss. He nipped and sucked, and while she was no shrinking violet, this time she let him dictate the pace.
They pulled apart at the one-minute warning in their headsets, and Kakashi pressed his forehead against hers, but kept their bodies pressed against each other. The only thing the two could see at the moment was their own reflection in their eyes, when the room detonates.
There’s nothing but black smoke and rubble in the once pristine study, and no silhouettes to be found in the room. Sirens sound in the distance as the smog flows out of the window that was blown apart by the blast.
----------------------
“And, cut! Great job everyone! That’s a wrap!”
Hikari and Kakashi are standing with the rest of the crew, watching the room blow up on screen. The two have their assistants touching up their make up, with her’s fretting over her swollen lips.
“You went too far you know. We still have scenes scheduled.”
Kakashi turned to see Hikari glaring at him, his eyes focusing on her pout, his eyes darkening at the memory, “Mah, I got into character. Isn’t that what it means to be an actor?”
“The scene called for one kiss and a heartfelt love confession of repressed feelings,” she thanked her assistant and sent her off with a smile and a wave.
He shrugged again and she hated how nonchalant he seemed, “The two clearly have crazy chemistry and I think we still pulled off the sentiment well, don’t you?”
She looked at him over her shoulder with a raised brow and teased, “What, did you fall for me while filming Kakashi? We’re professionals, aren’t we?”
Kakashi didn’t say a word. His gaze burned her, reminding her of the moment he pulled her into the kiss. He’d looked at her like this then too, like he’d been a dying man who’d just found the oasis to quench his thirst. She tried not to tremble but wasn’t able to meet his gaze, stuttering out an excuse she ran off to get ready for the next scene.
Kakashi touched his thumb to his mouth and smirked. You can run kitten, but I’ll find you.

Trust Me: Chapter 9
I cannot thank y’all enough for your patience. Hopefully the fact that it’s a relatively big chapter a little bit kinda makes up for the wait? Either way, thank you so much for reading, and I love you <3
Chapter 1 Chapter 8 AO3 Chapter 10
Warnings: A brief mention of the wounds from previous chapters’ violence, very briefly implied nsfw/daddy kink (to skip it, just don’t read the text messages after “Aww, you’re so sweet!”
Author’s Note: Again, the cipher is crackable with the information you have. (I’d argue that this one might be a bit harder, because I gave you fewer/subtler clues, but if you get how it’s encrypted, decoding it is a lot easier.) Shoutout to y’all who got last chapter’s! <3

"The truth, however ugly in itself, is always curious and beautiful to the seeker after it," Virgil muttered. Running his hand through his hair, he looked up to see that it was 8:30. He'd been at his desk staring at a copy of the note for over two hours. There was something familiar about the phrase; the feeling that he'd heard it before played in the back of his mind, just out of reach. He was sure that it was the key to solving the entire thing.
God, I wish I remembered more from that cryptology class I took in college. Okay, time for a new approach. Clean slate, let's go through what we know about him, Virgil thought.
He's a man in his late twenties or early thirties. He's highly intelligent and well-educated, likely with a medical background of some sort. He's a mission-based killer, set on punishing people he feels got away with things, things the system should have punished them fore. Before Jason Dean, it seems. That change in victimology must be connected to why he sent this note, so I'll put a pin in that for now; I'll talk to Vincent about the autopsy report when he's done with it.
He seems divided; some of the torture is methodical, but some of it seems more motivated by rage than purpose. And then there's how he treats them. Mission-oriented killers don't often torture their victims; the payoff is from the kill itself. But he's feeding them, keeping them alive for a while so he can torture them.
Does he want them to know what he's done? That's it. He wants them to recognize their 'sins', perhaps even repent for them. He needs the validation that comes from them acknowledging his power and that he is correct.
Everything he does has a literal meaning and a symbolic one, he continued. Nothing has only one meaning. On the surface, he's saying that he knows that what he's doing is wrong, legally at least, but he finds it beautiful. Interesting choice of wording. Not right, not just. Beautiful. It feels like he cares more about the torture than the mission. But then why the remorse with the pseudo-burial? He's so full of contradictions. And then there's the bit at the end. "Publish me", he said, not "publish this". Which goes back to the fact that he's got one hell of an ego; he wants the focus on him. Which directly flies in the face of most mission oriented killers- they want the focus on their message.
I would almost think that there might be two unsubs, but two people being this organized and methodical is extremely unlikely. He's way too egotistical to cooperate with a partner, however submissive said partner might be.
So, we've got an incredibly smart unsub who knows it and feels like he isn't getting the attention he deserves. A younger child, maybe? Not that that would help us find him. Round up every smart, egotistical younger son in the city. We'd get the founders of every tech start-up in the city; it'd be Gentrifiers-R-Us. Virgil shook his head to clear out the unhelpful thoughts. Focus, Virge. You're on a clock. So, what kind of encryption does someone like that send? What kind of encryption has each word represented by three numbers? It's not a trifid cipher; none of the numbers would be bigger than three, and these numbers range from 1 to 192. Most number ciphers assign a number to each letter; no way in hell all of the words are three letters, and 192 and 26 do not play well together mathematically. Think, Virgil.
Fuck. Okay, let's try another new angle. The series of numbers at the end. Clearly not part of the message. 10 digits, but clearly not a phone number. 055 certainly isn't a US area code, and the number isn't long enough for a foreign dialing code plus the rest of the phone number. Wait. Maybe it's backwards? 310 is Los Angeles.
Virgil took out his phone and dialed 310-053-3550, heart in his throat. It rang twice before an automated voice informed him that "the number you have dialed is no longer in service". Damn. His heart started beating in an entirely different way when he saw that he had some new texts.
6:22 [Patton]- Hi cutie! Are you free, by any chance? It's been a really bad day, and seeing you always makes me feel so much better. <3
6:50 [Patton]- I was thinking we could get some dinner and then watch a movie or something at my place
7:48 [Patton]- Virge?
Virgil's stomach dropped. Oh god do they think I'm ignoring them? Oh shit. He quickly typed out a reply.
8:53[Virgil<3]- Hey, Pat, I'm here. I'm so, so sorry you're having a bad day. I can't hang out tonight, though. :'( I'd be with you if I could, though. It's been a rough one for me, too. Wanna talk about what's been bringing you down?
Their reply was almost instant.
[Patton]- Virgil! :D Aww, stormcloud, it's okay. Life happens; it wouldn't be healthy for either of us if you dropped everything when I'm just a little down. Besides, it was nothing, really. Just me being dramatic lol
Virgil felt himself blush at the endearment, but his brow furrowed reading the rest of the message.
[Virgil<3]- You sure? It also isn't healthy to bottle up your emotions. I care a lot about you and am always here if you want to talk about anything.
[Patton]- God, you're the sweetest! <3 I care a lot about you too. I promise, though, I really am fine. Do you wanna talk about what's bumming you out?
[Virgil<3]- I really wish I could, but I actually have to get back to it. I'll message you later <3
[Patton]- okie dokie. Don't work too late, okay?
He chuckled as he put his phone away and looked back at the note on his desk. Heather and Kurt are obviously people, Ram probably is too. Who are they, and what do they mean to him? The phone on his desk started to ring; Virgil jumped.
"H- hello? Detective Mason here." Virgil cursed himself for the shaky greeting.
"Virgil! I'm glad you're still here. It's Vincent. You said you wanted to know as soon as the autopsy was done; I'm waiting for a couple of particulates to come back, but the bulk of it is ready for you."
"Vincent, you are a lifesaver. I'll be down in a minute."
"Did you know that the candy Life Savers was invented in 1912 as a summer confectionary alternative to chocolate, which has a melting point of approximately 86 degrees?"
"I definitely did not know that, but I did know that they started as mints and didn't become the fruity candy we associate most with the brand now until the mid-1920s."
"Fruit flavors were introduced in 1921, to be exact, but they did not have holes in them like the mints did until 1925, which is probably the date to which you were referring."
Virgil laughed. "Damn, I thought I had you. I'll be right down." He hung up the phone and left for the morgue.
Three minutes later, he found himself being hugged by Dr. Nigel-Murray.
"I'm as touch-starved as the next gay, but why the hug? We just saw each other, like, five hours ago." Virgil looked slightly down at Vincent with a small smile.
"I'm sorry, I'm trying to curb my workplace-inappropriate tendencies, but, barring once during a time of great stress, people in general don't respond in kind to my facts." Virgil's heart broke for the vulnerability and pain in his voice, and he made a mental note to learn as much trivia as possible.
"That's a damn shame. You're a great guy, Vince- let's get coffee or something once I've cracked this damn code."
"That sounds quite lovely, actually. What code, if I may ask?" Vincent's smile was appropriate for the fact that they were at work, but Virgil could tell that he was practically bouncing with excitement internally.
"Our killer sent a reporter a coded message. I've got about 21 hours to crack it if I want to get this guy to come to me."
"Not to overstep, but I've dabbled a bit in cryptography; perhaps I could be of some assistance?"
"I'd love another set of eyes on this, actually. Thank you! Here, give me your number, and I'll text you a picture of it once we've wrapped up here." Virgil pulled out his phone and unlocked it to find that his messages with Patton were still pulled up. He tried to stop himself from smiling, but he couldn't.
Vincent chuckled. "He must be pretty special, to get a smile like that out of you." Virgil blushed.
"Uh, yeah, they are. At least, I think so. I hope so." Virgil fidgeted with the hem of his shirt, refusing to make eye contact.
"Sorry about the pronoun flub. So, tell me about them!"
Virgil hesitated; opening up about his feelings certainly wasn't one of his strong suits, but he liked Vincent and wanted to be his friend.
“They’re incredible. Their name is Patton, and they run We Hart Coffee just a few blocks from here. They’re so funny and kind, and I’ve never seen a smile like theirs. It’s so genuine and infectious. The world genuinely is a brighter and happier place around them.”
“You really love them, huh?”
“I- What? No. No way. That’s way too cliche. We meet in a coffee shop and are in love within a couple of weeks? This is real life, and stuff like that only happens in movies and fanfiction. And completely unrealistic. What?" Virgil snapped, seeing the grin on Vincent's face.
"Trust me, Virgil. My first doctorate advisor, Doctor Brennan, was in deep denial of her love for her partner, Agent Booth. They're now happily married with two kids. I know what repressed love looks like, and you, my friend, have it in proverbial spades."
"I'm not sure that that's the right use for that cliche, and besides…" Virgil sighed, running a hand through his hair. "So what if you're right? Even if I did love them, which I don't, they don't love me back."
"Not yet, perhaps, but you're a great guy, Virgil. Smart, funny, caring, and quite handsome. If I were into men, I'm certain I would be half in love with you, myself. Just give them time."
"Christ, Vince, I'm gonna cry at work and ruin the tough-guy aesthetic I work so hard to maintain."
Vincent hummed his disbelief. "As much as I love chatting with you, I believe you're here about a murder. Follow me, if you will."
"Right. Murder." Virgil muttered before following him into the lab.
"So, you know who he is. 18 year old Mission High student Jason Dean. You saw the burns, frostbite, and acid damage. We were able to determine that the frostbite was caused by liquid nitrogen, and the killer used hydrochloric acid. We also found that while he was less dehydrated than the part victims, likely due to being held for only about a week, as opposed to two or three like previous victims, he was far more malnourished than the others."
"God, why is he changing so much? A kid, a shortened timetable, not feeding him. What was the cause of death?"
"Strychnine poisoning."
"See, that's a huge departure, too. All of the previous torture was from knives and hands. Why the sudden change to substances? Did he get injured, or is something else limiting his manual dexterity?"
"I don't know about any of that, but strychnine is a fairly popular poison in popular culture; Agatha Christie used it three times- in Mysterious Affair at Styles, The Coming of Mr. Quin, and How Does Your Garden Grow?, and Arthur Conan Doyle used it in-"
"Oh. OH. Vincent, I love you, you know-it-all." Virgil started pacing, running his fingers through his hair.
"I beg your pardon?"
"The Murder of Roger Ackroyd."
"What? Strychnine wasn't used in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd; Ackroyd was stabbed."
"Yes, I know. The note the killer sent. At the bottom of the code, he wrote 'the truth, however ugly in itself, is always curious and beautiful to the seeker after it'. It seemed so familiar, but I couldn't place it until you just brought up Agatha Christie. Poirot said it in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The number. I'm an idiot."
"Breathe, Virgil. I assume that you just cracked the code?"
"Not quite. But I cracked our unsub. I knew it. I knew he'd hand me the answer. I can't believe it took me this long to figure it out."
"Okay, so how does The Murder of Roger Ackroyd help you?"
"Under the quote is a thirteen digit number. I'd bet my life that it's an ISBN for a specific printing of the book. It's an Arnold Cipher. Each series of three numbers is a page, line, and word. It was staring me in the face. I truly am Boo-Boo the Fool." Vincent was puzzled by Virgil's last sentence, but Virgil was far too agitated for questioning it to be prudent.
Virgil took a deep breath. "Okay, sorry about that. So, back to Jason?"
"Oh, right. Jason. Um, the only other thing of note that we have found at this point are fibers from a 1950s Volkswagen Beetle."
"That's gonna help a ton, as well. Vincent, you are my hero!" Virgil scooped him up into a big hug before leaving the morgue, leaving Vincent speechless for the first time in his life.
Virgil ran back up to his desk, furiously typing in his password. It took him three tries to correctly enter the number into the San Francisco Public Library website's search bar. He eventually got it, and there it was. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie. And two copies were available. The library didn't open until 12 pm the next day, however, so he went home after setting an alarm on his phone and sending a quick text to Patton.
9:52 [To:Patton]- Hey, wanna get dinner tomorrow night?
He was ecstatic to see a message from them when he got home.
9:55 [Patton]- Absolutely! You got the problem worked out? :D
10:10 [Virgil <3]- I found the solution, and will get it resolved by the end of the week. I'll pick you up on Friday at 7? We'll take a walk in the park and then House of Prime Rib, on me?
[Patton]- Are we celebrating something? Or are you trying to tell me you want to be my sugar daddy? ;P
[Virgil <3]- Trust me, Pat, if I had sugar daddy money, I'd love nothing more than to spoil you rotten. But nah, it's a combination of a small celebration and an apology for being unavailable today and for the next few days until Friday. (and i may or may not be buttering you up in hopes you'll share what's bringing you down)
[Patton]- Aww, you're so sweet! <3 (Can I call you daddy anyway?)
[Virgil <3]- Only if you want to be rewarded, baby. ;)
[Patton]- I'll be a good boy for you, daddy, I promise.
Virgil noted their preferred appellation and responded in kind with a wicked smile.
--------
The next morning, Virgil woke up half an hour before his alarm was set to go off, feeling more relaxed than he had in months. I'm finally going to get this guy.
Figuring there was no point in just waiting around, he got ready and went right to work. He knew Captain Sanders would want a breakdown of the previous night's findings before he could start following the leads he had gotten from Vincent the previous night.
He got to the station and immediately started looking into Jason Dean and the possible claim that he was a murderer. It didn't take him long to find that three Mission High students committed suicide 2 months prior named Heather, Kurt, and Ram. Virgil tracked down the police reports for the deaths. By all accounts, they appeared to be through-and-through suicides. If Jason did kill them, the killer would need to be quite close to either one of the victims or Jason himself. Linking the suicides would imply that he's close to all of them. Maybe through school? Science classes are more than likely to have liquid nitrogen and hydrochloric acid. Any teacher would have access, but I'll look more into science teachers in particular. He's displayed some anatomical knowledge as well.
Captain Sanders walked into the precinct, calling for Virgil to follow him into his office.
"So, what do you have?" he asked, after they'd arrived and shut the door.
"The note is a book cipher based on Agatha Christie's The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. The library has a copy of the specific edition I need to crack it, so I'm going to pick that up at noon, as soon as the library opens. Looking into the 'murderer' thing, there were three suicides at Mission High 5 months ago, whose names match the three not-coded words in the note- Heather, Kurt, and Ram. If they were murdered by Jason, that means the killer is close to one of them, most likely Jason himself. I think that's what the killer is alluding to in the note, but we'll see once I've decoded it. Add in the liquid nitrogen, and it points to a teacher, likely a science teacher. So I'm going to crack the code and look for other insights into him and look into Mission High science teachers. I have an updated profile, and I'll email that to you right away."
"That sounds wonderful, Mason. You've been doing excellent work; we're glad to have you."
Virgil shifted his weight from foot to foot. "I'm just doing my best, sir. If you'll excuse me, the library is about to open, and I'd like to get the book as soon as possible."
"Sounds great to me! Just send me that profile before you go."
"Will do, sir. Thank you." Virgil turned and left the room, hurrying to his computer before rushing to the library.
--
A short while later, he was back at his desk with a battered copy of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. It wasn't difficult to decode the message, but it did take a bit of time and a lot of counting and re-counting. Word by word, the message became clear: He killed Heather, Kurt, and Ram. Find the weapon; I know he had it. It is your evidence.
Virgil sat back in his chair once he'd finished, puzzled by what the note revealed that he hadn't already deduced. 'He' has to be referring to Jason. He knew we'd find out the reasons for him choosing the previous victims, but he needed to be sure we'd know why he thinks Jason deserved to die. I looked at the police reports for those deaths; the gun used to kill Ram and Sweeney was recovered on-site and is in police custody. He's obsessed with his mission, though. He wouldn't make this claim if he wasn't sure. I'll look into that once we've caught our killer. For my peace of mind, at least. Virgil cracked his knuckles and picked up his phone.
"Roman Prince, SFGate, how can I help you?"
"Roman, it's Detective Mason. Can you come down to the station right away?" The responding scream was so loud, Virgil had to move his phone away from his ear. "I'll take that as a yes?"
"Absolutely, Detective. I will be there as soon as physically possible."
"Don't break any traffic l-" The line went dead, cutting Virgil off.
--
Far sooner than could have been legal, Roman skidded to a stop in front of Virgil's desk.
"HelloVirgildidyoucrackthecode?DoIgettowritearesponse?CanI-"
"BREATHE, Roman." Virgil stood, grabbing him by the shoulders. "Yes, I cracked the code. Yes, you will publish a response tonight. But I'm writing it. I assume your laptop is in your bag?" Roman simply nodded- he knew that if he tried to speak, he'd start rambling again. "Fantastic. Let's get going."
45 minutes (and one call from Captain Sanders to Dan Humphrey about how not allowing it to be posted immediately would be obstruction of justice) later, a new post was live on SFGate's website. It was 4:02 pm, two hours before the deadline.
An Open Letter to U N Owen
It was a pleasure hearing from you. While I obviously cannot condone your methods, you are correct that our justice system is imperfect, and those imperfections need addressing. You gave me quite a puzzle, and I enjoyed solving it. It was clever, but not clever enough. I hope you'll forgive me for not following your directions; please let me know if this is inadequate.

Music Theory #4
I have a whole alternate universe going on for this very song. The moment that I heard this one it reminded me of what it would be like if MC was stuck as Saeran’s assistant over the course of the game, and I really just can’t get that one out of my head. I’m really tempted to work on writing this out with my MC on AO3 but in the meantime, here are the feelings for Cringe by Matt Maeson. As I pray somebody makes an animatic for this.
“Lover, come over, look what I've done. I've been alone so long, I feel like I'm on the run.” You were supposed to be the one that followed his instructions and entered the apartment without question. But you hesitated to enter the number into the keypad and for that, your fate was sealed the moment you told him there was no number lock. Which was a shame, because he thought that you were going to be the one. Your back is too the wall the moment that you try to run, and he only stares at you with this glint in his eyes. “No loose ends,” he would sigh, “Looks like you’re coming with me... he has an assistant, I might as well have one for myself.”
There was no fighting him. While you realized your mistakes, it was too late to turn around from the lion’s den. Unknown takes you to the middle of nowhere without even explaining anything further.
Suddenly, you’re thrust into all sorts of tasks for this hacker. He doesn’t answer any of your questions, nor does he really pay you any mind when you try to dance through his attitude and worm information out of him now and again about that apartment and what his plans were. The only thing that you’re capable of doing is making a brave face and treading the flood waters that seemed to surround Unknown. However, there are cracks in his harsh facade in the middle of the night when his eyelids are heavy and elixir is on his lips.
Pieces are all you are given at first. “These people are traitors,” he would say in a hushed tone, eyes drilled on the wall and voice rough. “All they ever do is betray people.”
“But they don’t seem all that bad to me,” you would whisper, looking at fragments of the members, people like Yoosung Kim, or Zen, they don’t seem bad at all... no way they could hurt a fly.
“They’re all guilty by association,” he would remind you, hand gripping your chin so you can stare him in the eyes. “But the worst of the lot of them is that damn redhead. He acts so carefree and like he has no problem in the world. Nothing matters to him except for his selfish desires. I can’t stand people like that.”
“Lover, come over, kick up the dust. I've got a secret starting to rust.”
It doesn’t take much more thought to figure out that this compound is some kind of cult that seems hellbent on destroying those people in the RFA that you’ve seen on the other end of Unknown’s attacks and It’s only grown worse as he’s picked another girl to infiltrate their precious organization. He’s tasked you with reading more about them, and none of the information you’ve read about these people leads you to believe they’re any kind of bad.
What you don’t understand is why Unknown is so determined to destroy them, or who have hurt him so badly to make him want to do that. Unknown can see that in your eyes when he catches sight of you doing your work, but you seem to have learned never to say anything about them fast.
Despite all the time you’ve spent together... most of it is spent in quiet. Unknown works himself into the ground, he never eats, he never sleeps, and he doesn’t say much unless you press him to do so. He usually never humors you, he might drag you in his lap and tell you to be quiet so he can work, but it’s like you’re dancing with the devil to learn more when you think you have the chance to do so. At first, it’s for your preservation. You want to know as much as you can about him so you know how not to upset him and not make things worse for yourself in this place.
Naivety is bliss, you soon realize. His Savior, the person that he’s often credited as the boss, the person that saved him, she gives you a spare moment to figure out your alliance. You manage to swallow your fears and convince her that you’re on their side; And out of that, you learn that Unknown had become the person he is today because of her handy work. More and more of the reality of Mint Eye becomes clearer to you as the days and weeks pass.
And what started as you trying to keep yourself safe... slowly changes into something more.
“She said I'm looking like a bad man, smooth criminal. She said my spirit doesn't move like it did before. She said that I don't look like me no more, no more.” Not for a moment do you believe in any of the things you’ve heard these people say, and you try to remember that as you weigh the reality of this place. Your initial wariness with Unknown is still there, but you try your best to help him with his tasks. You’ll try to convince him to eat when he needs to, and sleep when he needs to do so, and while he muses why you do so, the lines between your relationship are blurred and blurred. This kindness is new to him, so there are times when he pushes you away from him and times when he just lets it happen without saying a word.
Those nights when his skin is flush and the elixir of salvation is hot on his tongue for the millionth time - those nights are when he rests his head on your lap and lets you speak to him without scolding you. He just lets your harmonious voice speak to him through his fever. Unknown knows better than to let himself fall for his assistant, but he cannot deny the way you make his heart twitch in response. Where he felt hollow and alone, it’s like he can see you standing in his flood. “I said, "I'm just tired," she said, "You're just high". And I said, "I saw you in the water".”
It’s in that heat and blinding passion that neither of you realizes you’re kissing until it’s happened.
“Lover, come hold me, head's on the fritz. Gaudy intoxicated feelings comfortably mixed.” The lines are blurred. Where was once a straight line is now cracked and warped. The lines are so blurred now and there’s no turning back from this path. One moment it feels like he’s just pushing you away, and the next moment he’s just pulling you in close. As you try to make sense of everything, Unknown is always there to ground you. His lips are heavy on your own, and the feeling of his hands against your hips makes you nearly lose yourself to these blinding feelings.
Your chest is tight when you think about it. Whatever it is that you’re feeling you don’t want to throw it away like trash. But at the same time, you’re feeling that you can’t stand what’s happening to him.
“Lover, come hold me, could you forget? I've got a secret, digging a debt.” It feels like the weigh is growing as the situation escalates. Unknown has been trying to destroy the RFA, and now he’s found an opening to trick their system long enough to steal their precious royalty. It reminds you that someone else wound up in your place and they could get hurt. But you can’t do anything about that.
You just have to sit put and relay information to him as he breaks into the apartment and startles the poor target. He nearly has a hold on them until the redhead bursts into the apartment and -
And then it happens. You find out the truth about Unknown at the same time everyone else in that room does, and that weight that has been dragging you deeper and deeper into the abyss is so low that you nearly cannot catch your breath. When he returns, you try to reach out to him with your warmth but he recoils at your touch and hisses, curses, shrieks at how much he hates that redhead.
You try to learn more - but he pushes you back against the wall and warns you not to ask about that, warning you that the past is in the past, and that traitor will get what’s coming to him for the trouble he’s caused. It’s a reminder to you that Unknown might be somebody you care about but he is still a dangerous person to trifle with. “She said I'm looking like a bad man, smooth criminal. She said my spirit doesn't move like it did before. She said that I don't look like me no more, no more.”
He’s in so much trouble for failing to complete his mission. He is taken away by the Believers before your very eyes and it is hours if not an entire day before he is returned. Like all those times before he is running a fever and his body is too heavy for him to keep upright. It pains you to see him that way. Mint Eye isn’t a good place, you keep telling yourself, and this is the wake-up call for you once and for all to do something about it.
You press your hand to his cheek and shut your eyes. “You don’t deserve this pain,” you murmur. “How is this a paradise if you must suffer for it?”
Saeran, as you now know him, he doesn’t say anything. He just stares at you with blurry eyes without clarity, whispering your name like a hushed and broken prayer. “I said, "I'm just tired," she said, "You're just high". And I said, "I saw you in the water". And I said, "I saw you in the water".”
“Sweating all your sins out. Putting all your thoughts back together. Oh, we just don't blend now. All of my attempts seem to weather.” With Saeran out of commission for a while and Rika’s trust in you something that you can only hold onto for a moment. As long as they think you’re not going to turn around against them then you can try something to get Saeran out of this place before they wind up killing him with their damned elixir of salvation. You take the chance to scour the room for his bugged phone. It takes a long time trying to decode the thing with your rudimentary knowledge of hacking.
But it’s enough for you to get a hold of Luciel Choi.
It’s just enough for you to get that distress message out.
Just enough to -
“Oh, I make you cringe now. Don't I make you cringe? Oh, I make you cringe now. Don't I make you cringe?” That doesn’t mean that things are going to work out in your favor. Unfortunately for you, that means you’re caught redhanded by the Savior and thrown into the dungeon for your decision. Not before Saeran can see it all happen, staring at you with a pained look in his eyes as the Savior tells him that you too, are a traitor to their paradise just like Saeyoung. It means you’ll be getting punished with whatever she sees fit. A part of your gut had been hoping that he would come after you and try to stop it from happening, but when he turns his back to you-
you hang your head in defeat.
“She said I'm looking like a bad man, smooth criminal. She said my spirit doesn't move like it did before. She said that I don't look like me no more, no more.” You sit in the darkness for days. There’s no knowing what has become of Saeran and the others, and it isn’t until others are dragged into this cold and unforgiving place that you realize that your plan must have failed. Because here is the one person you thought could save Saeran, trapped in the same cold place as you in Mint Eye.
You bury your face in your hands. There’s a weak laugh on your lips as you feel the despair reach its peak. “Hahahaha... I don’t know why I thought that Saeran could really get out of this place, if you couldn’t save him, then there really is no hope.”
“So you’re the person that’s been taking care of Saeran all this time,” he feels that same misery as you, despite the fact his face is flush and he seems delirious from blood loss. “I should thank you for that.”
“Saeyoung, please, you should save your strength,” the person that had been chosen as your replacement would try to make him stop talking but, the guy always did what he wanted.
You can only feel the pain. “I wouldn’t say I did much good for him. I didn’t exactly go out of my way to do the right things all the time by him. By the time I realized he needed to get out of this place it was too late to do it. And I thought- I thought as long as you could get Saeran to safety then it would have been worth all that trouble... but fat chance of that. I don’t think he’ll ever trust me again for what I did.”
Saeyoung understood those words more then you knew at the time. “I said, "I'm just tired".”
It’s a pure mess from that moment. The entire compound was dragged into her prayer chamber, and this so-called Savior was going to make a show out of everyone that had crossed her in the past few days; That meant she was going to drown every single one of you in elixir until you cracked. And yet, as she is about to do so, Saeran barges into the room and demands to know why she is going to waste her time with people like Saeyoung who didn’t deserve to live in paradise, and by extension, why she was going to drown you out when he was the one in charge of you. She had told him time and time again that Saeyoung would end by his hands, and now she had changed her tune.
Her true colors show to Saeran at last. It enrages and confuses him, and yet, when she orders her guards to cart him away, Saeyoung jumps in front of him and warns them that if they want to hurt him they’re going to have to destroy him first and that he’ll always protect his brother. And then, Saeyoung passes out from his wounds on top of him.
It’s when the Savior says that she should have taken Saeyoung instead of him so she wouldn’t have to contend with Saeran’s trouble that his mind shatters into pieces and he yanks the gun from his side holster, clutches his head in pain, and warns everyone in the room if they do anything stupid he won’t hesitate to prove his worth.
“Saeran!” It’s your voice that speaks to him through the swarming thoughts and panic building in his head. He doesn’t even realize that you’re reaching out to him in spite of being held back by the guards, “Please stop!”
His trembling fingers against the trigger are so weak that he nearly listen to your voice and drops it. Unfortunately, the spell is broken when he hears the voice of Jihyun Kim, and he pulls the trigger. “She said I'm looking like a bad man, smooth criminal. She said my spirit doesn't move like it did before. She said that I don't look like me no more, no more.”
It is some time before Saeran can see you again. He wasn’t sure that he would ever be able to look into your eyes ever again. But it’s the only thing he craves the moment he wakes up from his sleep and the withdrawal hits. He can’t think about that, however. He’s dragged from hospital to his brother’s place before he can understand what happened, not that he knows what happened incompletion, a good chunk of information is blurry for the sake of his mental health. All he can remember is how angry he is with his brother - and how angry he is with himself for losing you.
Even as he starts to understand that he was manipulated and twisted into becoming who he had been. Saeran can’t forget the way that you looked at him, and the way that you treated him like he was a human, not some tool to further that cult.
When he closes his eyes at night there is only one thing he sees.
“And I said, "I saw you in the water" (Do I make you cringe?) And I said, "I saw you in the water" (Do I make you cringe?)”
Weeks pass and somehow he and Saeyoung work out what happened and the time they spend together is slow but it comes along. This isolation that he felt began to crumble. One by one, he’s brought around to more and more people but none of them matter as much as the one he longs for and knows he doesn’t desire.
It’s unspoken, but everyone can see it.
And It’s when he least expects it that you walk into the room with your hands at your side and a heavy breath against your lips. Your face was the same as the last time he had seen it and recorded it to memory, but now your eyes look much more alive then they did back when he met you.
He whispers your name like a prayer.
“And I said, "I saw you in the water" (Do I make you cringe?) And I said, "I saw you in the water" (Do I make you cringe?)”
You just smile at him.

13 Things You Can Do Right Now to Motivate Your Tech Team in 2019
Handling an all-star tech team starts with the right people--hiring credible individuals and maintaining an open mind regarding what they will attract --and never really ends if you are doing it right. In my previous blog, I shared with some of my adventures on how best to make an All-Star Tech Fantasy Team. In this guide, I'm going to talk about 13 things you can do immediately to inspire your technician team.
Who are we speaking about?
Millennials now take the largest portion of their international workforce and the percentage is significantly higher in tech companies.
While they've altered the dialogue about what people want from work, we have reached a country where mild-to-moderate pampering is forecast to be a typical part of job: fully stocked bars, catered lunches, and also the occasional staff retreats. In startups and big companies alike, such generous, borderline lavish perks have increasingly become the standard, not the exception.
But the question is, how does the ordinary employee actually use the Xbox One at the company gambling den, or is he too busy for that? Does she need to edit spreadsheets sitting on this purple beanbag? Are employees really pining for ping-pong tables and much more "rest time" at work (presuming their boss won't give them the stink eye after that)? Or are those perks miss the point of what actually does motivate your tech team?
So what do they need?
Regular Review of Performance-Based On Tangible Metrics
'Of everything we have done to enhance employee satisfaction, the best impact has come from our daily performance encounters. There we concentrate on how our staff did with essential metrics that the day before.
Motivate your tech team: feedback
Feedback
This millennial cohort is hungrier for opinions and a clear path of growth than any other generation.
1 way to feed that hunger is creating a mentorship program where junior employees are matched with senior administration. Encourage routine weekly meetings that have a nurturing environment for workers to ask for review, get compliments, and air grievances. Mentors lead together with the responsibility of their mentee's professional development -- by outlining goals to delivering reviews.
Employees will feel much more strongly linked to the company if someone with skill and ability helps them propel forward.
Give More Shout-Outs
Multiple around happy hours or pricey dinners aren't the only ways to celebrate victory. If an individual went over and beyond the call of duty, a simple company-wide email or handwritten note can be just as powerful.
Try devoting the end of each all-hands meeting to give employees an chance to publicly recognize somebody else's work. This seems simple, the positive effect on a person's sense of self-worth and value to the company is priceless.
Rethink Team Structure to Motivate Your Tech Team
A recent Deloitte survey found that 63% of millennials think their leadership abilities aren't being fully grown, making them much more inclined to switch jobs.
Buck the trend by producing a structure for new initiatives which give individuals who might not be at the managerial level the opportunity to direct and take ownership of projects. It reveals a willingness to invest in your employees' ability while raising their morale and dedication.
While you're at it, do away with closed-door meetings. Nothing produces a sense of seclusion -- or fuels the gossip mill -- like seeing the same group of individuals whisper behind the glass walls of this conference space. If it's not strictly confidential, speak out in the open.
Switch Perks Into a Motivator
If your business finds itself at the financial position where scaling back perks becomes necessary, consider sharing the cost of supplying free lunch or gym memberships so it becomes a concrete figure to employees. 9 out of 10 will probably be amazed by how large the number is, guaranteed.
Here are the earnings figures we need to reach to bring it back. Instill the message that in case you want it, you got to work for this. By doing so, you are going to learn quite quickly who truly believes in what the company is attempting to achieve, and who's quite literally in it to get the free lunch.
When executed successfully, perks do exactly what they're supposed to do: boost productivity, inspire your tech team, and foster a stronger sense of internal community.
As a venture-backed startup, these ups are especially large. So creators may feel that the downs don't deserve public attention among their own team. Fight this urge.
Open New Opportunities For Them
Aside from a great civilization, a recognition system, and an enjoyable work environment, the key thing to inspire your technician team is new chances. For example: handling a new project for which we may not have shown skills yet. Believing in the team and each person, and demonstrating it daily, is the best morale booster one could give.
Give Them Work-Life Flexibility
Propel your technician: work-life balance
Nevertheless, the secret regarding the equilibrium is about acknowledging the pendulum will swing anywhere from zero to 100. And it may change- per week. Allowing workers to plan ahead based on upcoming work or personal deadlines and to receive the job done and where they need makes the happy staff and contributes to better productivity.
At Wolfmatrix we speak on Slack and via video conferencing. In addition, we utilize Trello and JIRA to assign projects and also to ensure deadlines are met.
Heal Them with Respect
Respect is the title and keeping employees happy is the sport. 'Respect' may sound easy and maybe even clichéd. Nonetheless, it is heartbreaking to see just how many businesses and managers still aspire to employ the best employees in the talent pool, trust them with the works and responsibilities, expect them to create excellent results as a bona fide worker but somehow wind up treating them such as sleazy shirks whose supreme aim in life would be to deceive the employers. There's not any quicker way to demotivate an employee than that.
Personally, a tool I vow by to cope creatively with my mates (who have diverse sets of abilities and openness ) is your Skill-Will-Matrix.
Have a peek at this and you will not again danger micromanaging your employees who only needed your advice. You will never again increase responsibilities hoping to inspire your technician team whereas all they wanted was a bit of enthusiasm in the job.
Instill A Sense Of Belonging To A Larger Goal
Imagine this; you own a wagon filled with products you need to market in the nearby village. There, a group of merchants are awaiting you. You're leading the wagons in the front and directing directions. A bunch of men are pushing the wagon from behind to make sure things are moving ahead.
There are hills and streams and gardens along the road. Flowers blossoming, butterflies trees and flying dance. But just the chief sees it. What do the men pushing the wagon see? A wagon filled with loads they need to push until somebody comes to purchase them!
Motivate your team
Yes, the leader is you. The merchant is the client. The wagon is your business, the products being your services or products. The opinion is the vision and those men are the workers. They don't see exactly what you see unless YOU tell them what lies ahead and how beautiful your perspective is!
Got my point?
Keeping staff happy and also to motivate your technician team normally boils down to rest and benefit. They need the chance to recover from the cost that tough work requires. Ensuring there is a lull between projects goes a ways to prevent burning out your workers.
Show Them The Results Of Their Work
I discover that software development teams would be the happiest when folks utilize and appreciate the goods they deliver. Pride of ownership is greatest when we hear continuous feedback from actual customers even if these opinions is sometimes negative. There's nothing worse than working on a product which no client is using and not one of your employees care about.
Challenge Them
If you're searching for engaging top gift, give your team members jobs that challenge them, with plenty of opportunities to learn and develop professionally. Give developers the chance to touch the entire heap and perform with a great deal of different technology. Let them find out what they like doing before they narrow their focus. Permit them to take the lead on high-profile projects. However, make sure they have realistic deadlines and suitable service to do a fantastic job. Encourage team members to speak at public events, write articles and volunteer locally.
'My staff enjoys challenges, so that I enjoy giving them puzzles, scenarios, and job issues to decode. When they solve it figure it out, they're enthusiastic and amped to keep on working.' Chalmers Brown of Due shares his tried and tested strategy.
Need a shortcut to inspire your tech team or seek the services of a driven developers' team with the hassles? Wolfmatrix can be of assistance!

My Spanish Journey
I didn’t choose Español, Español me eligió.
My journey to learning Spanish started long before I could have ever noticed. As a toddler, I can recall counting from 1-10 in Spanish. Ten numbers, my parents taught me, and nothing more. I still have no idea why.
Then of course, I watched Dora the Explorer. I precisely remember learning the words azul” and “estrella” from that show. The Road to El Dorado gave me my first, if slightly skewed, glimpse at Spanish culture.
Fast forward to high school. I actually was in Spanish class for a week before I dropped it and elected to take Latin instead. I actively rejected the chance to learn Spanish. I thought it was too hard and I just wasn’t interested enough.
But Spanish didn’t care. After graduation, I spent a week in Mexico with my boyfriend and his family. During the trip, I learned a few more words and phrases, “Donde esta el baño?” (por ejemplo). While I thought it was fun to say “Hola!” to the locals, I didn’t know enough Spanish to really talk with anyone. That’s why I still didn’t realize what I was missing out on until college.
At the start of my junior year, I started dating a boy who had just returned from a semester abroad in Puerto Rico. He told me stories about the people he met and I would listen as he would talk to his friends in Spanish, just for fun. This was the first time I realized that I was actually missing out on stories and connections with others because I only spoke English.
So I decided to learn. I registered for Spanish 101. It was so challenging for me. It was easily one of the hardest classes I’ve ever taken, until I finally got the hang of it. I became determined. I wanted to understand the teacher when she addressed us in Spanish. I wanted to be able to read the little paragraphs in our textbook without having to look up every word.
After Spanish 101, I realized I really hadn’t learned more than a few words and verbs, in the present tense, and I still couldn’t talk to anyone. So I was frustrated. I gave up and took a semester off.
The summer before senior year, I started planning to travel to New Zealand with my school for spring break. I was excited about seeing mountains and glaciers and having new adventures. I had been planning for the trip since before I set foot on campus. However, fate got in the way.
I found out that if I went to New Zealand, I would have missed spring training for my summer job. Seeing as leading groups of freshman on backpacking trips means more to me than anything else I’ve ever done, I had to give up my New Zealand dream for now. Fortunately, there was another trip happening over winter break.
Long story short, I went to Patagonia and it changed my life.
I took another semester’s worth of Spanish and booked my flight. I met such amazing people and saw things more beautiful than could be described in any language. I finally could speak to others in
their
language and it taught me so much about human connection.
When I came back to the states, I was depressed. I felt like I had just experienced the best that life had to offer but I wanted more. I started taking Spanish classes every day and met with a conversation partner every so often to keep furthering my skills. Eventually, my professor recommended that I apply for the Auxiliares de Conversacion program to be an English teaching assistant in Spain.
Despite my best efforts, reading libros para niños and watching Netflix shows like Club de Cuervos in my free time, I still wouldn’t even consider myself half-fluent. That’s why this language journey is so amazing. There’s so much left to experience than I even know.
As I said before, I didn’t go looking to learn a new language, but Spanish was all around me. From the colors on crayons to the instructions on shampoo. It’s all around you, too. I know I sound like some dumb gringa, but it’s amazing what you don’t notice until you try.
There is so much more to language than decoding strings of sounds and letters. Along my journey I heard the quote, “when you learn a language, you gain a soul.” I have found this to be beyond true.
Learning a new language is not easy, but if it were, would it be worth it?
